Transcript
- 0:00We were just having fun doing it.
- 0:01If it's all the light of day, great.
- 0:03If a couple people listen to it, even better.
- 0:05So with those expectations as a working point, working forward
- 0:09with them, that is super helpful because all of a sudden people
- 0:11don't have different expectations for the final
- 0:16product. So as long as there's that
- 0:17communication there or whatever like that in any band, it's like
- 0:20being in a relationship before the people.
- 0:22You know it takes time, it takes effort, and if you don't put
- 0:24out, you know that what you need to, you're not going to get back
- 0:27what you're expecting. Welcome back everybody.
- 0:35It's OJ from Ghost Club Magazine and I am here with Paradise
- 0:39slaves John and Ryan. What's up?
- 0:43What's up fellas, How you doing? Good, good, man.
- 0:46It's been a minute. First of all, love the new
- 0:49record. It's a good record.
- 0:51I don't know what to call it yet.
- 0:52I don't know if it's, it says people call it a metal core.
- 0:55I don't know if it's metal core. It's, it's it's own weird.
- 0:59I think it's own little weird little thing.
- 1:01It kind of skates the line of a lot of different genres in my
- 1:04ears, so. That's precisely what we're
- 1:07going for. Whatever works for you, there's
- 1:11something we we always say there's something for everybody,
- 1:14especially on this record. You know, everyone's a writer,
- 1:16everyone has their own thing they bring to the table.
- 1:18So when we collaborate, everyone puts their own sort of
- 1:22ingredient into the song. And while you hear the, you
- 1:25know, trying to think of the good word of it, but, you know,
- 1:27it's a very eclectic record, I guess.
- 1:30I agree. It's very, I won't say it's like
- 1:33all over the place, but it's all over the place in a good way.
- 1:35Yeah, yeah, kind of, you know, like in a face.
- 1:37No more way, you know? Yeah, yeah, cuz like that first
- 1:40song, the first song on that record, it just oh shoot, I need
- 1:44to pull up the album track listing.
- 1:46That would help me. We know which one you're talking
- 1:51about. We know which song you're
- 1:52talking about because it just doesn't happen to be the first
- 1:54one. So, but yeah, it's kind of a bit
- 1:56of a, am I playing the right record?
- 1:58For those, yeah, for those, yes, yeah.
- 2:00For those who watch the sea, it's very, I was like, wait,
- 2:03what's yeah. That first minute, that first
- 2:05minute of that song is like, oh, this is the whole time.
- 2:08I'm thinking, OK, this is what it's going to be like for the
- 2:11the whole thing. Then it kicked in and it tricked
- 2:13me. I'm glad you said that because I
- 2:15I kind of want to take a little bit of credit.
- 2:17I mean, not for the song. That's totally John Kita.
- 2:20He just did a great job. But yeah, dude, I was like, this
- 2:24has got to be track 1. Let's throw them all off right
- 2:27out of the gate. Yeah, for all the people that
- 2:31have been waiting to hear Brock's voice again, to have
- 2:34something just kind of a little low key, kind of started off and
- 2:37then his voice very isolated and very right out there.
- 2:41I when Brian brought that up, I was like, I, yeah, I can get
- 2:45behind that man, that kind of a thing.
- 2:46So yeah, for those who watch the sea, it's dedicated to
- 2:49lighthouse keepers, wherever you may be.
- 2:52Right on. We're talking about it.
- 2:53Me and my partner, we're talking about the record because he, he
- 2:57heard it too. And I heard it and he's like, he
- 2:59knew I was going going for it. I was like, hey, what I heard
- 3:01like I knew. But I I obviously know you,
- 3:04John, for a very long time. Right.
- 3:06Right. So I've heard, I've heard this,
- 3:09I've heard of song or two like a couple years ago.
- 3:12So I know this product has been in the works for a good while
- 3:16so. Very true.
- 3:17So my question is, what's up with the name Paradise slaves?
- 3:21Come on bro, whose idea was that?
- 3:23Come on. Oh, man, we're going there.
- 3:25We're going right there. We're going right there.
- 3:28You have every right to ask that question.
- 3:30A lot of people, a lot of people do have.
- 3:31I do have that question. No, but no 100% because it's
- 3:35it's a word that as soon as it's even said, as soon as it's even
- 3:38uttered or written on a page or whatever like that, it conjures
- 3:40up a whole lot of stuff in connotation.
- 3:43So I believe it was Brock he was reading something about not to
- 3:48don't. Know Brock's fault?
- 3:49It's. All it's all Brock fault.
- 3:50It's all Brock fault. But he was reading, he was, he
- 3:53really got into a number of things about the the Zodiac
- 3:57killer when a whole lot of this information was kind of coming
- 3:59to light based off of new research or whatever.
- 4:02And one of the, I guess the rants that he he had when he
- 4:06said the Zodiac Killer sent a whole bunch of things to a
- 4:08paper, a newspaper, and they printed it was that all the
- 4:11people that he killed would become his slaves in paradise.
- 4:15And he was, and he was like paradise slaves.
- 4:17That just sounds weird. And like when he brought it up,
- 4:18he was like, guys, you know what, I got an idea, whatever.
- 4:23But as soon as he said it, I was like, OK.
- 4:25But at the same time, I was like, there is a modern day
- 4:28correlation in a way that we are just completely, 100% reliant on
- 4:32so many things in life and just absolutely without them.
- 4:36Like without, without our phone, without our zoom, without that
- 4:38kind of a thing I do, we're lost in a way.
- 4:41And so like that, that that correlation to me made sense or
- 4:44that's how I, I rectified it in my head in the moment.
- 4:47I was like, I guess we are kind of, you know, for lack of a
- 4:50better term, we are suckers for this inevitable or this goal
- 4:54that may or may not be reachable in life.
- 4:56And so we're just kind of like a slave to that goal or that ideal
- 5:02for better or worse. So that that's what I, that's
- 5:04what I take from it. Yeah.
- 5:05Zodiac Killer. It's.
- 5:07Zodiac. Yeah, totally.
- 5:08Zodiac Killer it was. Yeah.
- 5:09And then there's all also, if you do your research on the
- 5:12Google machine, you can actually see it.
- 5:16There's a visual that there's, there's a cipher that the Zodiac
- 5:19killer sent to the San Francisco Times and it, it literally
- 5:23spells out paradise slaves. And paradise is actually spelled
- 5:29with AC at the end. And so we obviously didn't want
- 5:32to. I mean, it kind of reads like
- 5:34paradise slaves, which is kind of weird, but I'm not, you know,
- 5:38I'm not really. I'm not the Zodiac killer.
- 5:39So I I, I don't know how he thinks, but.
- 5:42Are you sure that you weren't out there in your diapers just
- 5:45like stabbing kids? It was me.
- 5:46It was me. Yeah.
- 5:48Yeah. No, I'm just kidding.
- 5:49But there's a visual representation of the name.
- 5:51If you if you Google it, you will see it and there's really
- 5:54not other, you know, there's really not much to think about
- 5:57it. I mean, it has ruffled a few
- 5:59feathers, but you know, if you, if you Google Zodiac Killer,
- 6:03then it'll, it'll make sense from there.
- 6:05It'll make a whole lot more sense than Jess.
- 6:07All right, cool, cool. I had to.
- 6:10I had to just fucking mess with you guys.
- 6:12I was like, I like it doesn't value.
- 6:14It's an interesting name. It's like you might as well get
- 6:16it out with me who I understand it and not be like, I know other
- 6:19people will take it so defensively because I was
- 6:22cracking up. It's like, but I there was that
- 6:24band, there was another band I'll slaves.
- 6:27I was like, yeah. There's not even.
- 6:28A black guy in the band. I was like, I don't.
- 6:31I was like, I don't know if I want to call it.
- 6:32There's nobody that I don't. Well, yeah, Well, there's also.
- 6:36There's also. Weird bad names.
- 6:37Just weird name choices, but. There's also a band called
- 6:40Audioslave. So I mean, and I love Audioslave
- 6:43and I, you know, I mean, it just kind of, I come from, you know,
- 6:47I come from a scene of just, that's the name of the band, you
- 6:50know, OK. I mean, there's a band from
- 6:52Boston called Anal Cunt. So.
- 6:56So you know, yes, yes. RIP Seth.
- 7:00Was it Seth Putnam? Seth Putnam?
- 7:03Yeah, dude. But like, yeah, that dude was
- 7:05crazy. But like, you know, that's what
- 7:07he was going for. So I mean, it depends.
- 7:09I guess it just depends how open minded people are.
- 7:13Yeah. Yeah, you know how?
- 7:14So this shirt right here is wearing this club called
- 7:17Wetlands. It was.
- 7:18Remember that place? Yeah, I remember.
- 7:20That's where I met. I met Seth there for the first
- 7:22time. So first time I saw anal cunt
- 7:24was there. So I was like, I was like.
- 7:25Are you serious? Yeah, they played this thing
- 7:27called Devstock, so I was like 17 at the time, 1617.
- 7:31It was them carnivore, so it was.
- 7:33Like it was like, Oh yeah, yeah, you got a big, you got a big fan
- 7:38of a Type O Negative right here, so.
- 7:40Yeah, dude. Life of agony too.
- 7:41Life of agony rules. Cool to the wetlands.
- 7:44I remember like, there's like all kinds of YouTube videos of
- 7:47them playing there. So yeah, I'm all about.
- 7:50I love the New York scene, dude. I just love it.
- 7:53Yeah. You're not.
- 7:53You've never got away. Yeah, you can always go visit.
- 7:56OK, Go. Do you remember the car that had
- 7:58all those stickers on it? There was a car inside the
- 8:00wetlands. Do you remember that little
- 8:01time? Yeah, I, I.
- 8:03We played, we played there once with leeway and we got there, we
- 8:05were like, how did you get this car in here?
- 8:07And they're like, the door was bigger.
- 8:09I worked. Oh, OK.
- 8:10The door must have been bigger at some point.
- 8:11They got the car in there, but every single man had like
- 8:13ticketed it up with all of their, you know, stickers and
- 8:16all that kind of a thing and it was just completely covered.
- 8:18Remember that thing? It was like a tiny ass car, but
- 8:20it was. I vaguely remember it.
- 8:22There's so many clubs that are just gone.
- 8:24It's like I've done. They're like, let's go around
- 8:26town and see places that used to be a thing, like the
- 8:28Continental. Continental is gone.
- 8:30So it's like, yeah, it's a, it's a condo now.
- 8:33It's like, it's like Coney Island High.
- 8:35It makes me sad. It's apartment buildings,
- 8:38Roselands, a condo. Now you know.
- 8:42Me and John took a selfie at the old CBS when I was I was in town
- 8:47with playing a gig. And he was like, I want to see
- 8:50the CBS now. And I'm like, yeah, sure.
- 8:52So we all walked over there and it was like.
- 8:54Clothing. Yeah, it's like a clothing store
- 8:56or something. Like.
- 8:57Bummer. It is, I think at one point,
- 9:00though I don't know if it's still there.
- 9:02I don't know which terminal it is at.
- 9:03Or was that at Newark Airport? There's like a CB GB store.
- 9:08Yeah, yeah, I think. I think it was terminal C at at
- 9:11at Newark, but I but it was trippy as it was trippy as hell
- 9:15going in one day and I was like, oh wow, it kind of feels like
- 9:18CBG BS in the airport. There's no way that they could
- 9:21capture the bathroom or like legitimately when when it
- 9:27started kind of like getting torn down when it was going to
- 9:29become the John Vavardo store. Whole bunch of people apparently
- 9:33went there because they were tearing up the stage and people
- 9:35wanted like pieces of the stage. Well, Vinny, Vinny Stigma is
- 9:40this. I do this piece of wood on his
- 9:42wall and I'm like, what's that? And he was like, it's the stage.
- 9:45It's the stage. Fucking Seabees.
- 9:46I was like, holy shit. And he told me that everybody
- 9:48went down there and just kind of like everybody got a piece.
- 9:51Obviously, you know, Agnostic Front being one of those bands.
- 9:54It was just there. Put that place on the map.
- 9:55You know what I mean? Yeah, they, yeah, they probably,
- 9:58they probably, I don't know, it's, it's probably their right
- 10:01to take most of the articles of that place for sure.
- 10:04Oh. Yeah.
- 10:04Oh yeah, there's actually remind me to, to, to give you guys the
- 10:09link, but there is a digital tour of CBG BS that they did the
- 10:14resolutions a bit off. It was like one of those 360
- 10:17cameras. And so it's, it's almost like
- 10:18Google Maps when you drop the little floppy guy down and you
- 10:21just say on the Street View, but you can walk around the, the,
- 10:26the entirety of CBG BS as as it was taken.
- 10:28I don't know, maybe like about a year before it actually got
- 10:31demolished. So.
- 10:32That's awesome. We're definitely going to got to
- 10:35get that nostalgia trip. Yeah, man.
- 10:37And Speaking of nostalgia, you guys have all been in various
- 10:41bands over the years. You've got, I guess I've known
- 10:43you for 20 years. And, and Brock popped out of
- 10:47nowhere to me in this project. And I was like, oh, he's still
- 10:50in Alaska. And I'm like, Oh yeah, he's
- 10:52still in Alaska. And how did this thing pop up?
- 10:55From what I saw, Tyler, your other guitar playing partner,
- 10:59like he was doing his solo record, one of his solo records
- 11:02and he had him do against vocal. Is that that's right thing
- 11:06originally started? Yeah, that was the, that was
- 11:08sort of the seed that was planted.
- 11:10Yeah, definitely Tyler and Brock.
- 11:13You know, I can, I can only speak from my, my standpoint,
- 11:16but I, I know that they had collaborated early in like
- 11:202019-2020 on Tyler's solo record.
- 11:23And I think what the plan was just to kind of put together a
- 11:27band to play those songs and then COVID happened.
- 11:30So I mean this as far as how I kind of go, I mean, this kind of
- 11:34leads how I got into the project.
- 11:36But Tyler had seen a, you know, obviously we're all doing drum
- 11:39videos during the pandemic because, you know, we can't play
- 11:42gigs, we can't do anything. So he had saw one of my drum
- 11:46videos and started, you know, he commented on it and I commented
- 11:51back and we just started kind of growing down.
- 11:54And then I went to hang out with him and, you know, he was just
- 11:58like, you know, I don't, I don't really know.
- 12:00Like, you know, with everything going on, I'm not really sure
- 12:02about the whole solo band, but you know, just just hang like,
- 12:07like, you know, and, and I remember John being, you know,
- 12:09John I met, I had, I had originally met John back, you
- 12:12know, years ago being a huge die cast fan.
- 12:14But you know, fast back forward to 2021, I was, you know, sort
- 12:18of reintroduced to John. And sooner or later Brock and
- 12:22Tyler basically were just like, hey, let's just form like a new
- 12:25band. And then we started
- 12:28collaborating remotely and, you know, 2 1/2, three years later,
- 12:32we got a batch of songs and a label somehow got interested.
- 12:36And you know, that's kind of kind of where we are now, so.
- 12:39In that order, like you came in third, then John and and Brad.
- 12:44Well, Jay had always been a ride to die.
- 12:46You ride or die so. Yeah, I was gonna say you.
- 12:48No matter what Tyler's like. Tyler, Tyler and John are like
- 12:51peanut butter and Jelly, man. Like, yeah, John, yeah.
- 12:54He had mentioned when like, Tyler's like, oh, my friend
- 12:57John. John Keita.
- 12:57I was like John Keita from Diecast.
- 12:59What? They could be played in bands.
- 13:02God. I mean, like Tyler had a band
- 13:04called Once Beloved that he started.
- 13:05Like, yeah. Yeah, in.
- 13:06High school and when they lost a guitarist, I offered to play,
- 13:10you know, some shows and that kind of a thing.
- 13:12And then we just kind of stuck together for quite some time
- 13:15present, you know? Yeah.
- 13:16So, yeah. So Tyler already had John sort
- 13:19of, you know, in the mix, you know, all, you know, he's the
- 13:21right, his right hand man, so to speak.
- 13:23And, you know, just kind of he started, you know, he found me,
- 13:25found me on the Internet. But we had, I mean, we had
- 13:27crossed paths at some point in real life.
- 13:30But basically it came from, yeah, it all stemmed from that,
- 13:33that that original collaboration between Tyler and Brock,
- 13:36essentially. Cool.
- 13:37Yeah, and then and then you say like he did a little time in
- 13:40Diecast too. He did like a little couple of
- 13:42tours with Diecast and everything too.
- 13:43So you could say it's like, oh, it's more like the Super group.
- 13:46It's like out Diecast meets 36 crazy Fists and it's very again,
- 13:50it's like it's very impressive that it doesn't sound like 36 or
- 13:56die cast. It's very you guys have done
- 13:59something that's very impressive.
- 14:00I'm sure it's easy to go to the well of like, well, do people
- 14:02know what's for this kind of sound and this kind of style?
- 14:05And you guys, you guys like I was like, wait a minute.
- 14:09All right, that sounds a little die cast.
- 14:11Yeah, kind of like none of this sounds like 36 at all.
- 14:14So like, yeah, nothing to me sounds like 36 at all.
- 14:17It's like there's some really cool, like heavy, like heavier
- 14:21vocals. I wasn't expecting from him to
- 14:23be that that heavy. And in some of the singing
- 14:26stuff, he the singing, the the cleaner vocals are just yeah,
- 14:29the melodies, like the the melodies like especially back on
- 14:32the cease on the first song that meant that chorus hook.
- 14:35That's a beautiful melody. And then like you guys are
- 14:37singing too. According to the video, you guys
- 14:39are. Singing Yeah, yeah, yeah I.
- 14:41Don't have any of the minor notes of who's in it.
- 14:43Because, well, the, the problem is, is you know, Brock is at 100
- 14:46and then myself and Ryan, we bring that all down to like 75%
- 14:51and that kind of stuff by adding it.
- 14:52But yeah, we, we all, we all sing live and everything, do all
- 14:56sorts of harmonies and and whatnot.
- 14:58But I think that no matter what, if anybody listens to this
- 15:01album, they're, they're listening for certain things,
- 15:03you know, whether or not it's if it's completely blind taste test
- 15:06awesome. But at the same time, you know,
- 15:09Steve Hall was the like one of the, the elements of 36 crazy
- 15:13fits that was so unique along with Brock because of what he
- 15:16wrote and what they collectively brought together.
- 15:19So I his voice is something that if you are a huge fan of 36
- 15:23crazy because you will most definitely enjoy this by by
- 15:26proxy. But yeah, the, the music.
- 15:28I mean, like I, I would hate to disappoint any, you know,
- 15:30hardcore 36 crazy fist fans, because some, some of those
- 15:33songs are so good. We're we're first and foremost
- 15:3536 and you know, Brock fans just in general.
- 15:39So I, I'm always grateful when I hear that.
- 15:41And dude, I'm blown away when you just see people just the,
- 15:46the way that they're like, this is not for me, but I'm so glad
- 15:50to just see Brock and hear his voice again, You know what I
- 15:52mean? Even if it's on something new.
- 15:54And that that is just like a man.
- 15:56They stood by this dude and love him that much that they're, you
- 15:59know, willing to take a risk on something, whatever they get and
- 16:02even comment, even if they're not a huge fan of stuff.
- 16:04So I'm like I it's a, it's a love fest for Brock and I'm glad
- 16:08to see it happen. Oh absolutely, yeah, I agree
- 16:10with that too. I was like, yeah, some of the
- 16:11songs like, yeah, like, like, obviously I can't.
- 16:13I'm a more metal thrashy guy. So yeah, you have some like
- 16:16nice, like hard, not hard, like middle.
- 16:19Yeah, you got some nice, like good chugging, chucking songs.
- 16:21But then you got some like some real bangers.
- 16:23Like I was like, yo, like, like Swim N is like, all right, that
- 16:26OK, we're doing something here. And especially like for me, like
- 16:30with Helen in his eyes, I'm just like, oh, OK, this is getting
- 16:34this. Did you guys move to Sweden to
- 16:36do this song? It's very.
- 16:37Bad, Yeah. No joke, that was that was the
- 16:40first song that was ready for this album, Hence I think why
- 16:43the everybody kind of decided like we should call it with with
- 16:45Helen in his eyes. But that was I think one of the
- 16:49songs that was meant to be on Tyler's second solo album, dark
- 16:53versus Part 2. And so I think out of all the
- 16:56people that he worked with on the vocalist on dark versus Part
- 17:001, he just got like along with Brock so well and they work so
- 17:04well and there was just this real great give and take.
- 17:06And so I think for a long time, Brock didn't really want to put
- 17:10himself out there with another band, you know, and but this
- 17:12would work so well. And it was so different, I guess
- 17:14that they were like, let's let's keep doing this.
- 17:17And at the very least I've got another song.
- 17:19And he presented him with with hell in his eyes.
- 17:22And I think the demo vocals were tracked on that before we even
- 17:24really kind of like got together as a quote UN quote.
- 17:27Hey, could we make a band out of this?
- 17:29And because of that, that was like the first song that was
- 17:32even in the the barrel, like when we went to go say like, Oh,
- 17:35let's put together an album. And we're talking like, like
- 17:38we're, we're talking like summer of 2021.
- 17:43Like that's, that's a long, it's, you know, I mean, short at
- 17:46the same time, but like, I mean, this collaboration has been,
- 17:51it's been through like a few years, but it, it honestly still
- 17:55feels a few months. It, it, it feels like it just
- 17:58started happening. You know, we've always, we,
- 18:00we've, we actually have, you know, I think everyone does it
- 18:03now. The being the way, you know,
- 18:05technology is. But we, we have the, we have
- 18:08this band chat that literally Brock tells us.
- 18:12I think he's been telling us good morning every morning for
- 18:15about four, yeah, almost four years straight.
- 18:19It's it seems if we don't hear good morning for at least on
- 18:22Eastern Standard Time by like 930, we're like everything OK,
- 18:27OK, because dudes an early riser and he grinds the whole day.
- 18:32But I think it's just one of those things that became
- 18:34routine. And the thing was like when we
- 18:35first started, it was like, should we have a group chat?
- 18:37Of course we should have a group chat or whatever.
- 18:38I was like, I can't imagine this, you know, other than band
- 18:41related stuff, just kind of it, it'll ebb and flow or whatever
- 18:44like that. It's like, no, every single day,
- 18:46which is awesome, you know what I mean?
- 18:47Because that's, yeah, man, it, it keeps everybody in that same
- 18:50kind of just like scope of things, you know?
- 18:53Especially when everybody's not next to each other like you used
- 18:55to, like the, like the old and the glory days.
- 18:58It's like, Oh yeah, you're like 10 minutes, 20 minutes away.
- 19:00You know, everybody used to be close most physically, and now
- 19:03it's like, all right, you're a couple hours away driving.
- 19:07If you would just put or, or a flight, if you were to put tax
- 19:11in a map, you would be able to hold the map up.
- 19:13It's that far away. You know what I mean?
- 19:15Between Anchorage, AK and Massachusetts, it's like boom.
- 19:18I think it would be a little bit skewed in One Direction or
- 19:20something like that. But at the same point, it does
- 19:23keep people together and and Omar, you know, this, I mean,
- 19:25like, dude, but my sugar was doing this trading songs, you
- 19:30know, with the Superior Drummer and that kind of stuff dating
- 19:32back to destroy a race and prove and moving forward.
- 19:35So it's always been one of those things that we knew would work,
- 19:37but you just needed the technology to do it.
- 19:40And now the technology is so advanced that you have no excuse
- 19:44not to be able to collaborate with people remotely.
- 19:45So it it it that made it a whole lot easier.
- 19:48Ryan has a full-fledged studio outside of Boston and he
- 19:51produces bands, plays in a number of them and writes a lot
- 19:54of music. What was A333 songs on the
- 19:56album? Do you just wrote like
- 19:58completely? Yeah, 22, actually 2/2.
- 20:01But nonetheless, nonetheless, that's awesome to have another
- 20:03member of the band just basically be like, hey, I wrote
- 20:05something. You just have to be a fucking
- 20:07banger. It's awesome, You know what I
- 20:08mean? And then we do our best to just
- 20:10kind of like, hey, we got an overdub for this, will it work?
- 20:12And just like expect him to like wave us off and he'd be like,
- 20:15no, go ahead, try something. That's awesome.
- 20:17You know, that's collaboration. That's the closest thing to
- 20:19being in a band and being in a room and kind of putting it all
- 20:21together that you can be nowadays if you're in different
- 20:25places, I guess. Yeah, I've I've dabbled in that
- 20:27world too. And now that I have a newer
- 20:30computer and I just recently moved so.
- 20:33I was going to say it looks a little bit different.
- 20:35Looks a little bit different though.
- 20:36Yeah, it's it's way different. I'm in Harlem now, so.
- 20:39Oh no shit. Wow.
- 20:40Awesome, We're we're about sorry, I shouldn't we should we
- 20:43shouldn't be doxing you. 21st should you find me.
- 20:51That's what somebody actually pointed that out to me when I'm
- 20:53posting all these pictures, Like if you look at my, my photo
- 20:55rolls, just pictures of my cat in the same pose and different
- 20:58poses in different seconds. And I'm always taking a picture
- 21:01of her collar, which has got her name and my address and my phone
- 21:05number on it. And they're like, doesn't it
- 21:07get, you know, kind of unnerving if you just put that information
- 21:09out there, like if anybody really wanted to know, they
- 21:11could probably figure it out. But above all, it's like I'm not
- 21:13going to starve the world of a picture of my cat, you know, for
- 21:17for that as a worry, you know? Speaking of, there's.
- 21:19Yeah, there she is. No, there's not moving there,
- 21:21Yeah. Shinobi, you should come out
- 21:24here and do something. I got the laser pointer right
- 21:26here. You'll probably see her move if
- 21:28I move the laser pointer. Yeah, because she knows that if
- 21:30the next sound is going to be the and there'll be a green dot
- 21:33somewhere. So.
- 21:34But we won't get into that. I don't want to waste time.
- 21:35Sorry I'm precious for you. Guys, she's like, I am not a
- 21:38show pony. She's like, don't bring me.
- 21:41Yeah. Exactly.
- 21:42Just bring me out and show me off to your friends and that
- 21:45kind of a thing. And she's like, but if I have to
- 21:48big stretch and she'll come over and flirt with everybody on
- 21:51camera, I guarantee you. I just text you, John.
- 21:53That's where I'm at. That's my look, right?
- 21:56Yeah, I'm going to. I'm going to cut and paste and
- 21:58put this in the chat so. Everybody send that, John.
- 22:02Send that to me. Later.
- 22:03Yeah, exactly, exactly, ladies and gentlemen.
- 22:06If you're by the Apollo, come on and say hi.
- 22:09Exactly. We'll send you what is it?
- 22:11What is the fruit basket company that like?
- 22:14Edible Arrangements. Thank you.
- 22:16What was Edible arrangements of chocolate dipped strawberries?
- 22:20I do like chocolate dipped strawberries.
- 22:21Yeah, they are. But I'm glad.
- 22:23I'm glad to hear that you're even closer.
- 22:24That's great, man. So I think we're we're, we're an
- 22:26A train away. Oh, perfect.
- 22:28Yeah, we can catch them. We can hop at the AMC one day to
- 22:31catch a movie. Hell yeah.
- 22:32We can talk about that Stormtrooper.
- 22:35Not, well, not Stormtrooper helmet.
- 22:36I can't really tell what that is above your head.
- 22:38I think it's a Lego. Is it a Lego?
- 22:40Captain Rex. Captain Rex.
- 22:41Captain Rex. Nice dude.
- 22:44What's his name? Bridger?
- 22:45What's his name? Ezra Bridger from.
- 22:48Ezra Bridger. OK, so he's kind of a yeah, we
- 22:51could probably have a podcast about obscure Star Wars things
- 22:54and everything, because I know Ezra Bridger's a bit of a you
- 22:57have to love him, I hate him and that kind of a thing.
- 22:59That cartoon was really good, man.
- 23:00I I finally saw Rebels, and I was like, all right, I'm good.
- 23:03I'm sold. This is, yeah.
- 23:05Bad batch, all that stuff. Dude, I got AI got a death
- 23:08watch. God, I'm so bad at I see it.
- 23:10I got a death watch. I see it, dude.
- 23:12I bought it at Comic Con. And legitimately I was like, I
- 23:16can't wait to open this when I get home.
- 23:17And then I got home in two weeks went by and I was like, shit, I
- 23:20really should open this. Like, I want to be the adult kid
- 23:22that I, that I've always wanted to be or whatever.
- 23:24And then my birthday came and I was like, you know what, I'll
- 23:26plan on opening it on my birthday.
- 23:28So I feel like a birthday present.
- 23:30I gave it to myself, completely forgot to do it.
- 23:32Christmas came, we didn't do family Christmas.
- 23:35So I was like, Oh my God, Oh, when we do Christmas in March,
- 23:37we'll do it. So we had a Star Wars Christmas
- 23:39at my, my sister's house up in Maine and we all had like, I my
- 23:44lightsabers and I opened that up and I was, it's a Black Series
- 23:471. So I was like, oh fuck yeah.
- 23:49Range Finder. Yeah, yeah, dude, I know
- 23:51legitimately Sunday at Comic Con, go up to any one of those
- 23:54vendors for the amount of money that I guess it cost for the
- 23:57union fees to get something out. They will start selling off a
- 24:00lot of the merchandise. Is it dirt cheap just so they
- 24:03don't have to take as many trips and spend as much money just to
- 24:06get it from point A to point B? That is true.
- 24:08And again, you hit those conventions on that last day,
- 24:11that Sunday, it's like, all right now you got the, all the
- 24:13good stuff is usually gone, but the stuff that you were
- 24:16hopefully like, hey, want to get rid of that, I'll give you a
- 24:19little bit. 60 bucks, man, 60 bucks, and I wanted to get one
- 24:22of those for a long time, so yeah.
- 24:24So the Captain Rex was a Christmas gift for my son.
- 24:27Yeah, Ezra, brother Edra. Ezra was like birthday gift for
- 24:32me. My birthday was Saint Patrick's
- 24:33Day, so that's like a gift for me.
- 24:35You still get the lights all green.
- 24:37You haven't changed the mother. There's nothing wrong with that.
- 24:39Stay at home brain. It's like there's a typo thing.
- 24:41It's like I'm always like like I knew Pete for I knew Pete back
- 24:44in the day too. So I was like typo was kind of a
- 24:46big inspiration and just you were just really nice and
- 24:49information. He was very helpful with a lot
- 24:51of information with my band and stuff so.
- 24:53You you 2 need to you 2 need to start talking about the way that
- 24:57we just went on that little Star Wars tangent.
- 24:59Please go on a type of Ryan legitimately like like like
- 25:04first person stuff like with between him and Pete and the the
- 25:07guys and I know how much of a fan Ryan is of.
- 25:09Type I'll. Say you're a little Instagram
- 25:12Reel because it was his birthday.
- 25:14No, that's birthday and his passing was the other day.
- 25:17We posted like a little reel and the picture that we use for it
- 25:20is my photo with Mike's, with my singer when we were like 1617
- 25:24years old, with Peter Steele at like 4 in the mornings.
- 25:26Oh. That's badass.
- 25:28That's so cool, wow. I was like a baby face.
- 25:31I was going to say you. It looks you're sitting
- 25:34literally in front of a creepy green light.
- 25:36Yeah, so. And I didn't know that.
- 25:38Yeah. So it's.
- 25:40I love that that was a typo thing.
- 25:43That's awesome. It's.
- 25:44Like like the same color green is the same color as my
- 25:47watermark for my photography too.
- 25:48So I just like, you know what? I like this like neon lime,
- 25:51whatever green that just just. Keep type of green baby, it's
- 25:55awesome. It just reminds me of that.
- 25:57Let's see. Speaking of hi, how can I segue
- 26:00out of that? Jesus Dreamer?
- 26:03Let's see. Music.
- 26:04Yeah, music videos. You've got 2 music videos that
- 26:07look really phenomenal. You've worked with my good
- 26:11friends and my good eye, Dave Oski and Ali Weiss.
- 26:15So it's like great videos I got. To say.
- 26:17Videos are awesome videos. I work with them a few times
- 26:21with Einstein Kills and Kill Switch.
- 26:23I did their live album, the live live stream I did.
- 26:26Palladium, he was up there with David and with with David and
- 26:30Ali. So if.
- 26:31You see the video just see like, oh, you watch those concerts,
- 26:33You see a big polkie with Brian Black.
- 26:35Yeah. You.
- 26:36Feel like I'm trying to be, I'm trying to be like, you know,
- 26:39hidden, but it's like I'm just too big.
- 26:41So in the white shot, like, oh, there's Omar.
- 26:43There he is, there he. Is there he is.
- 26:44That's what we should do. We should play a little, a
- 26:46little game, like a drinking game or something like that.
- 26:49Watching their live streaming, that kind of a thing.
- 26:50It's Omar. Where's Omar?
- 26:52Yeah, it's where's Omar? And so where's Waldo?
- 26:55It's like every time I worked him, it's like I'm shooting the
- 26:57bass players that cool. All the bass player shots are
- 27:00me. Yeah.
- 27:01All right. Very cool.
- 27:02Nice. It's all those.
- 27:03Really. Player loves.
- 27:04That's awesome. All those crotch shots of Mike D
- 27:07all up in the all up in his gear.
- 27:09It was you. Nice.
- 27:10Yep. So what made you guys decide to
- 27:13work with Ali and Dave for this one for these two videos?
- 27:16Dude, like legitimately, you know how we all live a whole
- 27:20bunch of different lives over the course of our careers lives,
- 27:23whatever you want to, you know, consider it out randomly.
- 27:27I got back in touch with Dave and Ali and, and I was like, you
- 27:30guys are still doing it, you're still killing it.
- 27:32And I'm always super appreciative.
- 27:34I'm sure everybody is. But of all the people that were
- 27:37at the top of their game back when, you know, Diecast was
- 27:40active and we were touring and putting out albums.
- 27:44So when you see a 20 year gap and then you see the same people
- 27:48that you vibed with at that time still doing what they love
- 27:52because they love it, you're like, OK, these these are real
- 27:55people. These are real people doing it
- 27:57for the right reasons. And so because of that, there
- 28:00was a part of me in the back of my brain that as soon as I saw
- 28:02Dave again for the first time, when I was, I was helping him
- 28:06out in Times Square with, Oh gosh, the side project from the
- 28:10lead singer from Thursday. And they, they were just like
- 28:13capturing all of the the 360 stuff for a song kind of kind of
- 28:17post COVID. And there was a part of me that
- 28:19was like, I there's there's a reason that we connected and
- 28:22there's a reason that he, you know, it was like, come on down,
- 28:25give me a hand. And we got back up and talking
- 28:27and I was like, if there's ever anything that I'm doing
- 28:29musically, I would kill for the opportunity to get him and Ally
- 28:33behind the camera again. So much so that I lobbied it to
- 28:36these guys. And they were like, yeah, I
- 28:39mean, the, the breadth of work that they did is fucking amazing
- 28:43and visually stunning. So it's, it's not too hard to
- 28:48sell anybody on the idea of getting these people behind the
- 28:51camera to do something to your music.
- 28:53But at the same time, the scheduling is just five
- 28:56individual people. And then, you know, 2
- 28:58individuals with a number of, you know, people like, you know,
- 29:00you know, Rob and you know, those guys that always help them
- 29:02out, that kind of a thing. But getting everybody in the
- 29:05same place at one point, whatever.
- 29:07Like that was a bit of a measure, but it was so worth it
- 29:10and I knew it was. And as soon as these guys walked
- 29:12in, they were like, and I know that you had probably met Dave
- 29:14and Ally in passing at shows when they were either, you know,
- 29:17filming footage or whatever, or just seeing, you know, this
- 29:20fucking Glendanzig looking, you know, stoic ass guy just sitting
- 29:26there, you know, like I just taking it all in and enjoying
- 29:28himself. But like Ryan can attest, like
- 29:32as soon as they walk in as in, hey, I'm Dave, nice to meet you
- 29:35that kind of like like it was an immediate connection and it
- 29:37would. Be so.
- 29:38Weird. Not going to anybody else ever
- 29:40again that, but yes. Because I mean, music videos
- 29:43just it's it's, it's like it's worse than playing a show.
- 29:47It's like playing. It's like, it's like you're
- 29:49Metallica and you're playing one song for, you know, 16 hours.
- 29:55Yeah. You know, So you just.
- 29:57Yeah. But I mean, hey, it's it, it's,
- 29:59it's what needs to get done. And, and the thing about that is
- 30:02Dave and Ally made it so enjoyable and so smooth.
- 30:05We were, we were just all laughs, you know, it was just,
- 30:08Oh my God, I couldn't I, I have never been through anything more
- 30:11professional and smooth and just fun.
- 30:16And I actually, I guess unprofessional, you know, just,
- 30:19we just, we were just man, like, you know, two hours into the
- 30:22shoot, we're all just busting balls, You know, we're Oh my
- 30:25God, I, I would work with them anytime.
- 30:27They were amazing. I can't, I, I can't say enough
- 30:29about David and Alex. Seriously.
- 30:31And they've also got like they've got it so dialed in that
- 30:34they speak a language of their own.
- 30:36So they know exactly what to do, you know, and they like
- 30:38basically think for one another, etcetera.
- 30:41And then you got Rob Brown, you know, pulling focus every single
- 30:43time on the the tablet and that kind of a thing.
- 30:46But legitimately, they know exactly what they need, how much
- 30:50of it that they need. And so they only put the band
- 30:53through the paces to that end as opposed to like, yeah, let's do
- 30:57it 15 more times. And a whole bunch of, you know,
- 30:59old dudes, you know, poor, poor Brock, he flew from Alaska.
- 31:03Middle, middle seat, no sleep whatsoever.
- 31:06Hop onto, you know, the the soundstage and then all of a
- 31:08sudden we're shooting there and we're playing one song how 2030
- 31:12times or something like that, ish.
- 31:14Or at the very least, you know, one person is doing at least 10
- 31:17takes here and 10 takes here or whatever like that, going full
- 31:20bore each time. They know exactly what they
- 31:21need, they know exactly how to get it, and they're not going to
- 31:23push you any further, you know, just to get the coverage.
- 31:26So I love those guys. They're awesome.
- 31:28I mean, and shout out, you know, shout out to Brock on that one,
- 31:31man. He literally, he literally left
- 31:33work, flew to US, filmed the videos for like 48 hours
- 31:37straight and we put him back on a plane and sent him home and he
- 31:41was, he was back home less than 2 1/2 days.
- 31:44I mean, that dude is just, you know, just.
- 31:45To be sad to be up at what, 3:00 AM so he could host a radio show
- 31:49back in Anchorage the the following day?
- 31:51Yeah, I mean, and, and, and, you know, he, he literally put
- 31:54everything, you know, he, he, but we did the, the first, the
- 31:56first video we did, we actually the first video we did was
- 31:59aesthetic and he had been up for.
- 32:01I mean, here I am. We me, Tyler and our bassist
- 32:05Brad. We had gotten to the Airbnb the
- 32:08night before. We, you know, we had a nice
- 32:09cushy like, you know, 8 hours sleep and we're like, man, I'm
- 32:12tired. And then like you look over and
- 32:14it's like, don't say that around Barack, man.
- 32:15He just flew in. This dude's been up for 36 hours
- 32:17straight. I'm.
- 32:18Pulling into pulling into Newark airport at 5:00 AM to pick up a
- 32:22guy that hasn't slept in two days to drive out to where?
- 32:25Where in Pennsylvania was it? It was the spot that they did
- 32:27the Scranton in the office and just to pull up in that kind of
- 32:31a thing, unload and just it also kind of it felt awesome because
- 32:35it kind of felt like an old tour thing, you know, like deprived
- 32:37of sleep real early call, but. That's exactly we were all just,
- 32:41I mean, well, for him mostly, I mean, he was definitely already
- 32:44in, you know, full fatigue, but he just, he just killed it, you
- 32:49know, I mean, he soon as it was as soon as it was time to get to
- 32:51work, he, he, he was just full bore, no excuses, never bitched
- 32:55about anything. So we, the four of us, had to
- 32:59like keep up with him, you know, we're and meanwhile we, we all
- 33:02had like a nice sleep and a nice breakfast and, you know, we were
- 33:05all fresh and ready to go. I I love, I don't like I'm like,
- 33:09I don't need to know the budgets or anything, but like those
- 33:12videos, both videos, they look, Oh man, that's like it looks, it
- 33:16looks expensive. They did a great job at that.
- 33:18Those videos were just, like, I always get giddy when I see
- 33:20their videos. Like, I'm at the point now where
- 33:23I know their videos before. I know they directed it.
- 33:26Yeah. You know, Yeah.
- 33:27Like, again, it's again, another funny thing.
- 33:29It's like, yeah, you told me you're gonna go over through the
- 33:31music video like the day before, the day I saw you, like a day
- 33:35before you went to go and do the video.
- 33:38Yeah. That was just the world so
- 33:40small, and this world's even smaller because I knew Ali
- 33:43first. Are you serious?
- 33:45Yes. I knew Ali from the band AIDS.
- 33:47Our old band used to play shows at this place in Queen Castle
- 33:50Heights. Yeah.
- 33:52So I know Ali from Castle Light Stage.
- 33:54Yeah, John. Dude, Scandato, man, that like,
- 33:57yeah, so Kevin Scandato is a oh. Sorry, sorry Kevin, not yet.
- 34:00No dude, they're so bad for John.
- 34:02This end fucking mic and everybody.
- 34:05There are the three brothers, the Scandado brothers and one of
- 34:08them in shut was in shutdown and and shut down shut down.
- 34:13John was and I'm blinking on the name of his band, Inhuman.
- 34:15Thank you. And Kevin booked all of the
- 34:17shows at Castle Heights and Queens and he just died this
- 34:20past week, man. And so like we lost two guys
- 34:23this past week just in the, the neighborhood of the the scene
- 34:26here in New York City. So it was just like, Oh, no, you
- 34:29know, it's, it makes, it brings back all the the best memories
- 34:31of all those things and the way things kind of used to be and.
- 34:34Well, we're all innocent and like had hope in our eyes for a
- 34:37crazy ass political career. Like we're going to do this and
- 34:40we're going to have fun. We're going to be, we're going
- 34:43to just tour the world. You're like, yeah, screw this
- 34:45stuff. I'm 35, I need money.
- 34:47I can't get this anymore. Exactly, And then I you get to
- 34:51like 37 and you're like, or do I just need a nice green light
- 34:54behind me and some Star Wars merchandise to be happy?
- 34:56And there we are. You.
- 34:58You would have laughed, Ryan, when the last time I think we
- 35:01were. Oh shit, I I think I saw you at
- 35:03the. God forbid show.
- 35:05Yeah, God forbid show and then also gosh.
- 35:09Disciples of Verity at the. Disciples of Verity at Jersey
- 35:13and Clifton. And then we we randomly ran into
- 35:15one another in Brooklyn at the place that I went to go see you
- 35:18guys play with ghouls. Is it the monarch?
- 35:23Is it the monarch? The monarch.
- 35:24Yeah, Monarch. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:26And we'll be done. Was playing.
- 35:27So, you know, see, Robin, all those guys were coming down or
- 35:29whatever, and they were like, hey, can you run the board?
- 35:31And I was like, in theory, Yeah, like I'm happy to.
- 35:34I don't know. And so we ran this out and, you
- 35:37know, there he is. There's OJ's fucking, you know,
- 35:39oh, hey, oh, hey, what's going on, man?
- 35:41You know, that kind of a thing. Just backing on.
- 35:42And we took a picture and sent it to Dave and Alley.
- 35:45And Dave and Alley are like, oh, we'll see you tomorrow at the at
- 35:49the shoes on. Yeah, we're shooting, you know,
- 35:51So it was a big love fest, you know?
- 35:53Oh, yeah, dude, it's not true. Yeah.
- 35:54Like, like, yeah, our old band used to play together.
- 35:56Like I knew her as a guitar player then and then Fast
- 35:59forward years later, I like they there was a call out for a
- 36:04champion. Glad.
- 36:05Hey, we're doing a music video in Jersey.
- 36:07Who needs extras? And I was like, that's like,
- 36:10cool. I was like, I came down to go be
- 36:11an extra in the video and I'm waiting to get picked up and and
- 36:14Hoboken. And here's Ali.
- 36:15He's like, oh, stop. What's up?
- 36:17Like was that when she was with the video?
- 36:19Tommy Boy Records. Was that when she was with Tommy
- 36:21Boy Records? Or was that when she was still
- 36:23doing the visual stuff but after that fact?
- 36:25She was, she was, I don't know though, she was still with Dave
- 36:28then. She was still working with Dave
- 36:29then. So I was like, we did the strap
- 36:31young lad, wrong side video and I'm like an extra in that video
- 36:34running around, you know, so. Yeah, dude, behind the camera, O
- 36:38JS been there virtually like every single music video you've
- 36:41seen or whatever that filmed in New York City is.
- 36:44You're doing shit, man. Or being a camera operator.
- 36:46Yeah. I need to do more of that.
- 36:47That's that's the thing I'm trying to like do more this year
- 36:50is like make more videos to myself and like do more like now
- 36:52I like this editing stuff. It's just fun, but I want to do
- 36:55more and like I need to get back to playing.
- 36:57I need to get a decent electronic kits 'cause I do miss
- 37:01playing around with like the programs and now.
- 37:03Tyler, Tyler actually has a kit and I, I want to say he was
- 37:06selling it. So we'll totally put you guys in
- 37:08touch and see. Yeah, funny thing, we could.
- 37:11We could talk. About in the small world after.
- 37:13Yeah, exactly. Cue the music.
- 37:16You're the lawsuit season desist.
- 37:18Oh my God. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:19Yeah, oh gosh, that's the last thing you want to do.
- 37:22Yeah, for real. So yeah, this is really fun
- 37:23guys. So whose idea was it for Soul
- 37:25Asylum? Cuz I did cuz I listened to this
- 37:28record kind of blind. It's like I just put it on.
- 37:30I was like once I got it I was like I just listened to it and
- 37:32see what track was track. I just like my own little mental
- 37:34notes. I was like oh OK.
- 37:35Like yeah to me, like like I said, like dreamers and in hell
- 37:39or with with hell and and Swim N were like the ones that really
- 37:44like oh, I like these more aggressive songs.
- 37:46Yeah, and I'll say this before I get to the Soul Sound cover, the
- 37:49album is sequenced very well because you didn't put all the
- 37:52bangers right up front, like all the Super fast hard ones you
- 37:56didn't like it's aggression. And then it's kind of like
- 37:59mellow, like you guys went hard, soft.
- 38:01You get a nice, you did the wave.
- 38:02And I think more records, yeah, more workers need that wave
- 38:05because like you could only, you know, your ears get tired.
- 38:08Your ears get tired of. Somebody the, the older you get,
- 38:11you're kind of like, Oh yeah, you know, like head banging a
- 38:13little bit, that kind of a thing.
- 38:14You're like, fuck, man, I got to take it easy.
- 38:16And it's like this this song, I'll just I'll just smoke them
- 38:19if you got them Glass mountain. All right, cool stretch, you
- 38:21know, that kind of a thing. Do a couple of stretches, you
- 38:23know, get your dancing shoes on and then go back up for the next
- 38:25one. But we we we kind of like threw
- 38:27around a number of ideas for that and just like, what would
- 38:30be your ideal, you know, song order?
- 38:32And then they matched similarly. And then we were like, yeah, you
- 38:35know what? And the idea like Ryan was like,
- 38:38maybe we put for those who watch the sea 1st and that song just
- 38:42happens to thread directly into aesthetic of serpents by design.
- 38:46And so it just like, OK, then that's that's obviously logical.
- 38:49But the rest of it just kind of came pretty organically as well
- 38:51as logically, I would think. So I'm glad to hear that because
- 38:54the last we wanted to do is just bombard people.
- 38:57You know, you put out an album and you're like, it's got
- 38:59something for everybody. And then somebody hears one of
- 39:01the tracks and they think that they've made-up their mind as to
- 39:03exactly what the rest of the album's going to be.
- 39:05So we we, you know, conscious of the fact that if somebody hits
- 39:08play, we want to keep them kind of along along the journey, I
- 39:11guess. Yeah, 'cause I mean, yeah,
- 39:12'cause I mean, how, how often do you, you know, do you, you put
- 39:15on a record these days, especially like a modern record
- 39:17and you just listen to it front to back without even stopping,
- 39:20you know, and I think that's kind of what we had in mind.
- 39:23And I think, I think, I mean, you know, could be biased
- 39:26'cause, you know, we've been the ones listening to it the most,
- 39:28the last, you know, 4, almost four years.
- 39:31But, you know, we this, yeah, it just came natural.
- 39:34I think when we all put our, we all submitted our lists into
- 39:37the, the chat and it vaguely similar, like it was all like,
- 39:40OK, everyone's, everyone's on the same page, you know, so, but
- 39:44yeah, I mean, as far as the cover, you know, it's crazy
- 39:48because you think Soul Asylum, you usually think runaway train
- 39:52or something. But you know, Brock had flown in
- 39:55from Alaska just a hang. And it was the first time, like
- 39:59we were all, everyone in the band was, was in a room
- 40:01together, you know, so we, he decided, Hey, you know, guys,
- 40:04I'm, I'm free. Like in a couple weeks, I'll let
- 40:06it come hang and we'll just like, you know, just party and
- 40:09maybe jam a little bit if we can, you know, talk shop and
- 40:12kind of just vibe it out. And so he, you know, Fast
- 40:15forward, he, he. He comes over and he's, he's
- 40:18staying with Tyler. And then, you know, a bunch of
- 40:21our friends, everyone, we come to the house and we're kind of
- 40:23sort of partying and we're, we're all listening to music.
- 40:27And it's funny. My, my girlfriend Nikki had, you
- 40:30know, she, we were all kind of throwing songs out there and
- 40:33she, she had thrown out Soul Asylum, somebody to shove.
- 40:36And then and then Brock was like, I love, Oh my God, I love
- 40:38that song. And then so we put it on and
- 40:41that, you know, that that lick started and it just became this
- 40:43big kitchen sing along like, and, and it was like, that was
- 40:47weird. Everyone, everyone wow.
- 40:49Like that, that yeah. And you know, I mean, it's like
- 40:51the same thing when I think anyone hears that song.
- 40:54This is for me, there's a familiarity to it because it's
- 40:57like, wait a minute, I've heard this, but I don't know who it
- 40:59is. And you're like, oh, Soul Asylum
- 41:00and oh, it's the the band that did Runaway Train did this, you
- 41:04know, and it's their it's their track one on that super
- 41:07successful record. But you know, we, you know, back
- 41:10in the chat we had talked about just like you remember that
- 41:13night, like remember, you know, remember somebody at the shop?
- 41:16I think Brock Brock was all about let's cover it.
- 41:20And then he. Wanted to do it forever.
- 41:22Like apparently he was like Oh my God, like what are the odds?
- 41:24He's like, I've wanted to cover that.
- 41:26Yeah, he was just like, dude, I've been wanting to do this.
- 41:27Like, I mean, I've been wanting to do this song forever.
- 41:31And then was it a couple days later, John, like you had, you
- 41:34had a a demo basically like already put together?
- 41:38So the way my brain works right is I was asleep at the time that
- 41:41they were upstairs and I I could hear the conversation and I
- 41:43could hear the music as I was falling asleep.
- 41:46And it dawned on me too, because I've also.
- 41:49That's right. I always, I always, I always
- 41:51forget you were in bed. I'm sorry.
- 41:52No, no, it's OK. That's the last thing you want
- 41:54to say because it's so uncool. It was like.
- 41:57You are you Irish, goodbye to early that.
- 41:59Night no, that was that was one of the beauties of of the time
- 42:03after COVID was there was a lot of things that were remote doing
- 42:06a, a, a zoom call the following morning and basically, you know,
- 42:10doing tech support for it in the background.
- 42:13And so I just I, I got it was an early call.
- 42:14So I went to bed kind of early, but I heard this conversation I
- 42:16heard the song and I was like, they are going they are touching
- 42:20every single point and everything makes so much sense.
- 42:22There's no reason that any heavy band has not approached this
- 42:25song and turned it into an absolute banger and why hasn't
- 42:28anybody had done it? And then we we kept talking
- 42:31about it and everything and I was like, you know what I'm
- 42:32going to do and this is the way my brain works.
- 42:34I'm like, OK, I'm going to sit down.
- 42:36I'm going to see if I can orchestrate it for what we how
- 42:39we would play it or live or something like that, or for a
- 42:41metal album and see how it works or whatever.
- 42:43And then I got a, a rough sketch of it kind of together with
- 42:46drums, guitar, bass. And I was like, hey, guys, what
- 42:49do you think of this? And they were like, oh, shit,
- 42:52yeah. Well, we were just talking
- 42:53about. And I was like, I ever overheard
- 42:55you guys talking about. Yeah.
- 42:58And Broccoli let me go, lay down some vocals on it and you got
- 43:01some studio time, put it in. That kind of a thing.
- 43:03And not to mention, I think Ryan had played with another one of
- 43:07his bands opening for Soul Asylum couple months prior to
- 43:10this and there was a. Whole there was a couple it was
- 43:12a it was a couple years, but yeah, I sorry, sorry.
- 43:15No, it's all good. It's all good.
- 43:16But yeah, I had opened for Soul Asylum and it was a great show,
- 43:19man. They still I mean we we opened
- 43:21for them at the paradise and they still they still filled the
- 43:23room. I mean there was a shit ton of
- 43:25people there and they opened they opened with somebody to
- 43:29shove that's a date. It's a bold.
- 43:31Move. It's a very bold move.
- 43:34It's a bold move, but like, we don't.
- 43:35Have to pay the babysitter. Let's get the fuck out of here.
- 43:37No, they, they, they have some great songs.
- 43:38They do really do actually have some great songs.
- 43:40But yeah, but, but I mean, that that one just has so much
- 43:42potential to it. And then, you know, John's demo
- 43:45just had so many killer sort of modern ingredients to it, you
- 43:50know, because when you when you listen to this, when you listen
- 43:52to the original version, it's it's very grunge.
- 43:54It's very 90's rock. And it's like, oh man, you know,
- 43:58how would how would the sound if it just had a little bit of a
- 44:00crunchier guitar? What if a little more double
- 44:02bass? And, you know, I think that's
- 44:05where we ended up landing with it.
- 44:06You know, John created such a great demo and then Brock took
- 44:09that demo, did some, did some studio time, cut the vocal, sent
- 44:13it back to John. And this is sort of how our
- 44:15writing process goes. And then John, you know, kind of
- 44:18mixed it again, showed it to us. And it was just it was just
- 44:21undeniable. And another shout out to Brock
- 44:23that it doesn't he he's in and out of the studio, man, there's
- 44:27really, he knows what he's doing and the, the way he crafts
- 44:30melody and phrasing. I mean, there's just, I don't
- 44:34think there's ever been a moment even with the newer, the newer
- 44:37demos, because we're always writing.
- 44:38But there's really never been a moment where like where he
- 44:41doesn't just hit a Grand Slam like every like, you know,
- 44:44because he'll, he'll open the, you know, he goes into the verse
- 44:47and you're like, oh, oh, hell yeah.
- 44:48And then when he hits the chorus, it is such a chorus.
- 44:51And I, I mean, it's just undeniable.
- 44:54And I think he just especially for some, I mean, you can tell
- 44:57he'd want to do this song for a while.
- 44:59So when he when he got the chance to do it, he just brushed
- 45:02the vocals on that one and everyone, you know, And then I,
- 45:06I eventually I retract to the drums.
- 45:08Everyone got to, you know, everyone gets in.
- 45:10There's, it's at their little workstation, throws their stuff
- 45:14together. We send it to John.
- 45:15John replaces, you know, the demo version of something with,
- 45:18you know, our version of it. And there you have it.
- 45:21Technology. Technology, yes.
- 45:24Go technology, dude. One of the craziest things about
- 45:26it was after that conversation that you guys had, I think the
- 45:28following night we went to one of the local haunts in Westfield
- 45:32as as a a band, minus Brad, you know, at that point, but as a
- 45:36band or whatever. And because I had heard that
- 45:38conversation, I went over to the Touch 2 thing and I was like, I
- 45:42want to test something because I had a feeling that this song
- 45:45could be kind of rad, right? You know?
- 45:46And we could probably do it justice, hopefully do it
- 45:48justice, but bring it into kind of a modern context, diatonic
- 45:52third harmonies and all that kind of stuff.
- 45:53Do a cool solo. Great.
- 45:55But I threw on somebody to shove or whatever, and I looked around
- 45:58and I was like, yeah, guys, like, I heard you guys playing
- 46:00this last night and they're like, yeah, such a great song.
- 46:02That conversation just came back up.
- 46:04And as soon as it got to the chorus, all these yah dudes and
- 46:07all these Bros from Westfield State and all these girls were
- 46:10probably like, I don't know, 22 years old at the bar.
- 46:13They're all like pumping their fists and singing along to it.
- 46:15And we're like, holy shit, like, OK, it it, it transcends a
- 46:19little bit so. Yeah, it's, it's a, it's a, it's
- 46:22like a, it's an old 90s radio banger, you know, so.
- 46:25Buzz Bin. I think the the Buzz Bin, Yeah.
- 46:27On MTV, Yeah. And this is this is just how
- 46:30stupid. This is another way you can
- 46:32understand how dumb I am, man. When we were out in Anchorage
- 46:36getting ready to play our our second show, Brock is talking
- 46:39about the song. He's like, yeah, man, I love,
- 46:40you know, it's so cool that we got to do this.
- 46:42But at the same time, he was like, you know, that song
- 46:45Somebody to Love? And I was like, yeah, it was
- 46:48Jefferson Airplane. Jefferson Airplane, you know.
- 46:50Jefferson Airplane. And I was like, yeah, somebody
- 46:52to love. And he was like, you, you know,
- 46:54that somebody to shove is kind of like a direct grunge response
- 46:58to the not hippie ish. But the 60s and 70s version of I
- 47:01want somebody to love is like, Nah, I want somebody to shove.
- 47:04And I was like, holy shit, you're right.
- 47:06And why didn't I ever put that together?
- 47:08I was like, Oh my God. But I'm 42 years old and I
- 47:11didn't realize it. There are things I realize on a
- 47:14daily basis that I should have known.
- 47:15Years. Years, but here we are.
- 47:18At least you know now. At least then I.
- 47:20Just. And you just taught me
- 47:21something, too. I was like, oh, wow, yeah.
- 47:23There's a rock'n'roll jeopardy for.
- 47:25You I mean I am beat your song and with the Soul Asylum song,
- 47:28because I just curiosity see, like I love a good metal, a
- 47:32medullification of a song. Sure, sure.
- 47:34And medullification, I like that.
- 47:36Yeah, just like, oh, it's, it's good to just like, oh, here's
- 47:38the original. Here's the cover.
- 47:39It's like. It's like I'm so weird like.
- 47:40I love like I'll say this dude, this like side note about cover
- 47:43songs, like I'm not like I'm not a big Led Zeppelin fan, but if
- 47:47you give me a Led Zeppelin song covered, like I love it.
- 47:50Same thing with The Beatles. I'm like, but you give me like a
- 47:53cover version of their song. You're the bigger chance.
- 47:56I would be more interested. It keeps me my attention logger.
- 47:59I don't know. Kind of like going to different.
- 48:01Restaurants, man, if somebody cooks for you and you have a
- 48:03bad, you know, that's, that's really good food, that kind of
- 48:06thing. But somebody like like Pintos,
- 48:07like if you go to Pintos is the Indian spot up there where where
- 48:10Tyler lives and he's known them for years.
- 48:12You go in there and it's kind of like, whoa, this guy cooking the
- 48:15same dishes is just like leagues better.
- 48:17So you get some metal band putting together something or
- 48:20whatever in a different context and all of a sudden you can
- 48:22appreciate it on a different level because it's hitting all
- 48:24the same notes. You want to, you know, hear
- 48:26you're in a song, especially metal song.
- 48:27So glad you dug it, man, That's awesome.
- 48:30Because that was not a risk. But at the same time for
- 48:34somebody to love and then somebody to shove, to be kind of
- 48:38like a diametrically opposed thing, like I just want to love
- 48:42you. It's like, Nah, and I just want
- 48:42to push you or whatever. This at the same point is
- 48:45similar at the same time, because gosh, what is it 40
- 48:48years, 3030 years maybe. But when this when this song was
- 48:53released, so it's a revision to it, but at the same time, it's
- 48:56kind of like it still works. And that's that's a that's a
- 48:59sign of a a good songwriter, you know, and Dave Perner and the
- 49:02guys from solo song so. I was not expecting that song at
- 49:06all on here. So like once it started like,
- 49:08yeah, it's it's it's you know that, you know that at Riff you
- 49:11open. Another it's Yeah, dude, when
- 49:12you hear the, you hear the lick. And you started laughing.
- 49:15Wait a minute. I started smiling and laughing.
- 49:17I was like, you know, I was like, I'm listening to it at
- 49:19work. I'm listening, I work at the air
- 49:21for the first time at work and I'm just like, uh huh.
- 49:23And I'm just like what the fuck? I just started laughing because
- 49:27I was like, sorry, I did not expect to hear this song.
- 49:30It's so briefly, man. It's so briefly and.
- 49:33That's a fun one. That's a fun one to play turn.
- 49:35The chorus into a little bit of a breakdown, OK, that wasn't
- 49:37there, you know, a little bit of harmonies that weren't there.
- 49:40But it dude, it's a fun, it's a fun one to play too.
- 49:43All right, now let's talk about we're talking about covers.
- 49:46Let's talk about the album cover.
- 49:47Who did the artwork? Where did this?
- 49:50Clever man. I like that.
- 49:52Give it. That was good.
- 49:53That was good. That was a mic.
- 49:55That was a Mike D That was a Mike D design.
- 49:58And I think Tyler had reached out to him, said, hey, you know,
- 50:01we're going to need some artwork.
- 50:02And he sent over a few things. And I think that when that hit
- 50:06the group chat of all of the ones that he had sent over, I, I
- 50:09think Brock really gravitated to it, if I remember correctly.
- 50:12Yeah, yeah. I mean, they were all, they were
- 50:14all fucking awesome. But there was something, there
- 50:16was something kind of rock and doom about that one that I think
- 50:20we, yeah, mainly Brock. And then the rest of us were
- 50:22like, yeah, you think he's on to something?
- 50:24I think I like the, I like, I think I like that one the most.
- 50:26And we all kind of went with that.
- 50:28I pushed back and gave shit just because it's The color palette
- 50:31is very unique. It's much, much different than
- 50:34one would expect for especially for an album of just what you're
- 50:37seeing with a skull face on a statue, you know, harvesting
- 50:40wheat with that big little knife, you know, that kind of a
- 50:42you would expect it to be a whole lot darker.
- 50:44But the color, the color pattern was kind of unique.
- 50:47And I was just worried that like the people that were colorblind
- 50:50or whatever like that would just completely lose it because
- 50:53depending on your colorblind, it could just be like, it could be
- 50:55the White Album for all their concern, you know, that kind of
- 50:58a thing. But yeah, it's and it kind of
- 51:00stands out, I guess, you know, as far as standing out against
- 51:04other other things. Yeah, it does it the colour.
- 51:08Yeah. It's not like a blue.
- 51:09Like how many blue album covers are there?
- 51:11How many cover they get lost in black and.
- 51:13Tearing down your blue skies. Yeah, I've been there.
- 51:16Yeah. Blue or whatever, Yeah, just
- 51:18make it. Very blue.
- 51:19Yeah, very blue. Yeah, like, like for me, like
- 51:23for my little graphic design part of my brain, what I'm doing
- 51:25the thumbnails for like our weekly new music video.
- 51:28It's like, all right, here's a new Music Friday.
- 51:30Here's here's like a list of 20 to 50 video albums that are
- 51:34coming out this week. When I'm putting the covers
- 51:37together, I usually go Ferrari, the bigger name, obviously the
- 51:40big name person. And if there's not nobody really
- 51:42big name that I'm aware of instantly I just go for which
- 51:46what albums catch my eye? You know, it's like, oh, that
- 51:49just here's a look, look, cover, cover like, oh, this one looks
- 51:51cool and make sure there's nothing, you know, nudity on it.
- 51:54But you know. And that could be hard these
- 51:56days, having something that comes out that, you know,
- 51:58catches an eye at the very least.
- 52:01I like colourful colours covers and it's like your cover is
- 52:04colourful, you know, it's like I've seen like the grey cover
- 52:07this year. We've seen all the simple mono
- 52:10colour covers and like sometimes they're cool sometimes.
- 52:12Oh, this is they didn't, didn't put any thought on this cover.
- 52:15They just Yeah, this looks like clip art.
- 52:18Yeah, at this point, AI just, you know, like put in a prompt
- 52:22and you know that you're you're off and running.
- 52:25There was a band, do you remember a band called Band of
- 52:27Skulls? They were a three piece from
- 52:29England. Oh yeah, very like, you know,
- 52:31like London dirty rock. I'll I'll give you some links,
- 52:35OJ, just just because I think you'll appreciate because they
- 52:37they are kind of heavy. They had some Slayer riffs, but
- 52:39they were a three piece and fronted male female vocals that
- 52:43did harmonies. It's it's gorgeous stuff.
- 52:45All of their covers were some level of a unique kind of you
- 52:51don't exactly know what it is image, but that is basically
- 52:55flipped and then has a symmetry to it from the center outwards
- 52:58to the right and the left. Every single one of their albums
- 53:01does. And I always thought that that
- 53:03was such a cool kind of like a, it was the first time I saw and
- 53:06I was like, I, my cousin turned me on to them and I had never
- 53:08heard of them before. And then I looked at the album
- 53:10and I was like, I remember seeing this album and it just,
- 53:12and what? Once again, that's a hard thing
- 53:14to do these days, especially if you want to just be I could
- 53:17because your cover art may not be reflective of the content
- 53:20inside. So there's a, there's a balance
- 53:23to be had there, I guess. Like KISS covers a little bit
- 53:29more hard, it's a touch more behind Kiss with those colors.
- 53:34And I know I love Ghost, but at the same time, and once again,
- 53:37Ryan is a huge Ghost fan or whatever, but when that first
- 53:40album came out, there was a part of me that was expecting just
- 53:42this. You know.
- 53:44Imagery that they put out and it was like kind of Blue Oyster
- 53:47culty. And I was like, what?
- 53:48Wait, wait, wait, wait. I'm confused.
- 53:50I thought it was going to be Norwegian black metal, like,
- 53:53yeah. And then I throw it on.
- 53:55It's like, yeah, it sounded like, like, yeah, cross between
- 53:58old BOC and like, King Diamond. And I was all about it.
- 54:01I love it. I love it.
- 54:02I'm not a, I'm not a hater. This production is too clean.
- 54:05I don't like it. Yeah, exactly.
- 54:08I love I I I. There's always a little bit of
- 54:10that, There's always a little bit of that.
- 54:12I love good production and you guys have done this is a good
- 54:15sonically sounding record but also love like the old like 90s
- 54:20like black metal record that sound like the recorder, like a
- 54:22set recorder I love. The mix, That's what you were
- 54:26supposed to do. Yeah, you were supposed to do
- 54:28that. It's like, because I mean,
- 54:29listen to Venom, you know, and I mean any, any Venom record from
- 54:32the 80s, it just sounded like they recorded that in about 26
- 54:36minutes and moved on. Yeah, they did.
- 54:38It on one of those cassette decks and they were like, can
- 54:40you hear the, the, the, the burning church in the
- 54:43background? You know, I think it's like, no,
- 54:45I can't, but I, I can. I can picture a burning church
- 54:47in the background, now that you say it, you know?
- 54:49So how hard is it for you guys when you guys are recording
- 54:53live? Like how hard is it to get like
- 54:54the sound of the band that you guys are looking for?
- 54:57Because obviously I'm sure this has change shapes, probably
- 55:00different, different key tone key registries.
- 55:04You know where we're it's going to be mainly in D or CS or
- 55:07wherever, whatever note you want to play in.
- 55:09When did the band sound to you guys like a band?
- 55:13I think it's yeah. We began, you know, turning
- 55:16songs around because everybody had obviously Brock contributed
- 55:20to every single one of the songs vocally to get 2 songs that
- 55:23Ryan, you know, came up with in completion virtually like hey
- 55:27guys, want to hear a song I wrote shit.
- 55:30Fucking awesome. Also in a B standard, right?
- 55:34So I was. Psyched because?
- 55:36The old die cast stuff, you know, I was had the seventh
- 55:38string just tuned up a half step and then back down to B
- 55:40standard. But I was like, oh, OK, so I
- 55:43gave you shit all the time. I'm like, well, now we have to
- 55:45bring more guitars, damn it, because title Then in drop drop
- 55:49C, you know, so if you're doing drop C and you, you know, you
- 55:53run the risk of breaking a string and you need a backup
- 55:55guitar. OK, so that's two guitars and
- 55:57now B OK, you want to bring an extra guitar in case.
- 56:01So that's four guitars. It's just kind of like one of
- 56:03those things that I always give a shit about.
- 56:05But I was surprised simply because the the half step
- 56:09difference that it that it all kind of translated pretty well.
- 56:12And since we were back and forth between the stuff and
- 56:14approaching it with the production side, because Ryan
- 56:18knows his shit. He's been running a studio and
- 56:19recording shit for years and so he know he and he probably had
- 56:23an idea of exactly what he wanted his drums to sound like
- 56:25and where we were going to start.
- 56:26So we spent the time back and forth and also on Zoom, like we
- 56:31want to get this right. We have the time to do it, let's
- 56:34get it right and how can we improve it in each iteration as
- 56:37we went back and forth with it? Yep.
- 56:39Exactly. Technology, man.
- 56:41So you're going to play live. So what?
- 56:44Oh, we could if we wanted to. Yeah, sorry.
- 56:46I, so I, I should specify that. So Ryan has an electric drum
- 56:52kit. And so every single one of the
- 56:54songs that he would perform, we would get a MIDI piano roll, you
- 56:57know, that kind of a thing. And then we determine like, we
- 57:00know what your drum set sounds like.
- 57:01So in a perfect world, if we were to go into a studio and
- 57:04record it, we know the dimensions of your, your kick
- 57:06drum, that kind of a thing. So just built it up from scratch
- 57:08and on a Zoom call on multiple occasions, we do this thing
- 57:12where if I'm in Pro Tools and I get the master bus with the
- 57:15drums coming through it, I have this, this, God, I'm going to
- 57:19blank on the name of it. Great product placement, dude.
- 57:22Perfect, perfect. Holy crap.
- 57:25I'm so sorry. Because they're really, they're
- 57:27really great people. That kind of thing.
- 57:29I'll think of it. It will pop up into my brain
- 57:30later. And I'll put it on screen for
- 57:32you later. Yeah, exactly.
- 57:35Can we, can we all stand still so we can do a hard cut audio
- 57:37movers. Thank you.
- 57:38Yeah. So there's this is this is plug
- 57:40in called Audio Movers that no, the company called Audio Movers
- 57:43makes it, it's a plug in that you put on the master bus of a
- 57:47track in, in Pro Tools or something like that.
- 57:49And it generates a URL that a user can navigate to and listen
- 57:54in full fidelity on the other side of something.
- 57:57So this is where on the precipice of doing this for for
- 58:00practicing that kind of a thing, running our tracks, basically
- 58:03communicating on Zoom, being in different places and being able
- 58:05to start a click track. And then Brian can be practicing
- 58:09of the song. I can be practicing from here
- 58:11and he's got full fidelity on the other side of me and every
- 58:14other element there. And he's playing along with the
- 58:17guys in the room. So in this case, the audio
- 58:19movers URL, you navigate to it, he can be listening on whatever
- 58:22his preferred device may be and he hears it in full fidelity.
- 58:26So he's like, Yep, OK, all right, that sounds about right
- 58:28or whatever. Could we just pitched that that
- 58:30drum down just a hair like that and we'll bring it down a cent
- 58:33or something like that, tune all the drums accordingly.
- 58:35And then then we were just, you know, off to the races as far as
- 58:38like really fine tuning all of the drum sounds that we that we
- 58:41wanted with samples, you know, from, from the kit and that kind
- 58:45of thing. But at the same time,
- 58:46prepackaged ones that we could really, you know, get some
- 58:49mileage out of or ones that match the dimensions of the
- 58:52drums and then build that kit in real time and then finesse it
- 58:57and refine it moving forward. I I can see OJ is already think
- 59:01and he's like like I don't want. I bet I could.
- 59:04Yeah, I got. I'm thinking of where I can put
- 59:06a drum kit in here. You can.
- 59:08There you go. You have plenty of room.
- 59:09You got plenty of room. I got to talking, talking to
- 59:11Ryan even like you could be there's there's never not enough
- 59:14room for a drum kit. So make it work.
- 59:16Agreed. Yeah.
- 59:18And it'll be an E kit. If, if, if, if all works out.
- 59:21So there's nobody gonna be banging on your wall and that
- 59:23kind of stuff. I found I found another company
- 59:25that does like E kit like bass mats where they get the little
- 59:31platform it's a little I forgot the name of it right now I'll.
- 59:34Pop so your downstage neighbors, right?
- 59:36Yeah. So your downstage neighbors
- 59:37won't be super pissed. Yeah, so like.
- 59:39Oh, it's like, oh, it's kick drum all day long and like, oh,
- 59:42you're not, it's not transferring to the floor.
- 59:44The guy, it's a great, it's a great idea.
- 59:47Yeah, that's really all it is. It's the, it's really the kick
- 59:49drum that vibrates the most. But, you know, there's the, you
- 59:52know, the mesh heads kind of make a little bit of a slap
- 59:55noise, but it's better than, you know, waking.
- 59:57I hope you're you're all your angry, you know, neighbors so.
- 1:00:02I really also it's it's got to be comical for somebody who has
- 1:00:07absolutely no idea what you're doing to walk by your apartment
- 1:00:10and hear somebody going nuts on an E kit.
- 1:00:13Because you can probably hear like the, the heavy breathing of
- 1:00:16the drummer and the in the in the, the, the the rebounds of
- 1:00:20like the kick kick from peddle neck.
- 1:00:21It probably sounds like a sex swing or something like that.
- 1:00:24You know what I mean? They're like, yo, I don't know
- 1:00:25what, what 4C is up to, but man, fuck, you know, like they're
- 1:00:30doing a lot of sex, a lot of sex.
- 1:00:34But yeah, the, the, the whole, the whole production process,
- 1:00:36whatever was easy because it wasn't a, there wasn't a
- 1:00:39deadline. We planned to self release this
- 1:00:41once everything was kind of together.
- 1:00:42And then when Spine Farm had some interest in the, the songs,
- 1:00:45when Brad, I mean, when Brock passed them along to them, we
- 1:00:48were like, OK, that kind of thing.
- 1:00:49But then we were in a holding pattern as to when it was going
- 1:00:51to fit into, you know, their release schedule.
- 1:00:54So we weren't able to really tell the world about it for
- 1:00:57quite some time. So a lot of people were like,
- 1:00:58happened, you know, what the Hell's going on?
- 1:01:00Oh yeah, I noticed. I noticed that on when I was
- 1:01:03like this. Let me see, what else did he
- 1:01:04release? Because I know I heard, because
- 1:01:05I remember I heard stuff from you.
- 1:01:08So that guy when I was on YouTube.
- 1:01:10But it's like, Oh yeah, some of the stuff says, Oh yeah, coming
- 1:01:12out in 2023. Yeah, as far as we thought it
- 1:01:15was, yeah. And so, yeah, things, things
- 1:01:18changed when Spine Farm was interested in, it was like,
- 1:01:20that's cool. But once again, this is another
- 1:01:22variable, you know, you're playing by somebody else's, you
- 1:01:25know, schedule, that kind of thing.
- 1:01:26But we we made it work. We took the time that we were
- 1:01:29kind of like in holding and just made sure that we were
- 1:01:32comfortable with everything. And they just, you know,
- 1:01:33fine-tuned everything. I think now we're getting to
- 1:01:37real records in the sense of this is when it's supposed to
- 1:01:40come out because all the records that were delayed from COVID the
- 1:01:44last couple years have just been crammed in with proper releases
- 1:01:48from that that year. And it's like, hey, you're
- 1:01:51playing catch up. So you're getting like.
- 1:01:52Sure. Extra records right now, I feel
- 1:01:54like there's a lot of it's a lot of noise out there and for
- 1:01:57better or worse, like it's, you know, like something like this
- 1:02:00kind of stands out of the pack because it's like, all right,
- 1:02:04like I said earlier, it doesn't you know, if you're looking for
- 1:02:06it's not it doesn't have it's it's nostalgic in the your
- 1:02:10band's nostalgic in the sense of who's in the band, not
- 1:02:13sonically, you know, if that makes.
- 1:02:14Sense OK, that's good. That's good because, you know,
- 1:02:17at the same time, because Ryan, how many albums you you put out?
- 1:02:20I mean, between the Lady of the Dunes stuff and all that kind of
- 1:02:23stuff. So Ryan does like a ton of
- 1:02:24production also. So we, we try to try to kind of
- 1:02:28like go back and forth and get the best of both worlds and, you
- 1:02:30know. Mostly, yeah, mostly my own
- 1:02:32projects these days. I was recording people, but you
- 1:02:35know, just, you know, when COVID hit, you know, everyone, you
- 1:02:39know, everyone became a, an expert with, with a laptop, you
- 1:02:42know, and it was just like, well, all right, you know, go,
- 1:02:45go for it, man. You know, and then everybody
- 1:02:47started a podcast. Every, everyone's.
- 1:02:50I'm joking. I'm joking, totally.
- 1:02:51It's true. It's true.
- 1:02:53Like we pivoted. It's like, hey, we we're not
- 1:02:54going to shows. How can we talk about music?
- 1:02:56We started doing like a a weekly 100.
- 1:02:58Percent. When but, but it's good, thank
- 1:03:01God, because the other thing is people are a little bit more
- 1:03:03technically advanced. They they learn how to use
- 1:03:05microphones and Internet databases and what do you call
- 1:03:08it? You know, just like the analog
- 1:03:09to digital conversion taking place.
- 1:03:11People hadn't messed with these things, but now you could and
- 1:03:14what the focus right Scarlets, we used to always joke around
- 1:03:17like who needs like, you know what A2 channel, you know,
- 1:03:20analog to digital interface or whatever that you just plug into
- 1:03:22your laptop and all of a sudden everybody needed one just so
- 1:03:26they could go to work, you know, and or tell a, you know, commute
- 1:03:29that kind of a. Thing until they figure out like
- 1:03:31until they figure out these USB microphones and it's like hey
- 1:03:35cool they sound just to me they sound just as good as expensive
- 1:03:37ones it's all you know like we're all audio nerds to a
- 1:03:41degree like we like we know what we like we know what sounds
- 1:03:43wrong it's like oh they're they don't know how to use this
- 1:03:45microphone they're too close on the microphone they're too far
- 1:03:48back when I hear like people do zoom like you know zooms and
- 1:03:51it's like oh why are they talking into the computer don't
- 1:03:54they have like a headphone at least you know like sometimes
- 1:03:56you just know and it's like. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:58It just give you the scrunchy nose.
- 1:04:00But I'm. I'm just jealous because you're
- 1:04:02your fucking microphone. Not only does it change color,
- 1:04:05but it's like a it's, it's got a white capsule on it, so it pops
- 1:04:08out and everything like that. And I'm just.
- 1:04:10Yeah, that's a sexy little set up there.
- 1:04:12That was, this was on purpose because I was like, hey great,
- 1:04:15my chair is black and I usually wear black like for interviews.
- 1:04:18Like I made a conscious effort not to wear black shirts in a
- 1:04:21black chair. I can see where you're going
- 1:04:23though, because yeah, if that was a black capsule, yeah, it
- 1:04:26all would be would. Be just see a head.
- 1:04:27It looked like you like you. Yeah.
- 1:04:30Yeah, exactly. Just a floating head right here.
- 1:04:32But dude, like, legitimately, if if you were wearing black and
- 1:04:34that had a black capsule on it, all it would look like is kind
- 1:04:36of like a small digital lava lamp just hovering in place in
- 1:04:40front of your in front of your torso.
- 1:04:43Yeah. Yeah, I think this gives me a
- 1:04:44little extra little kick. It's a contract to wear.
- 1:04:47I get to wear like a color like, oh, that's where I get to wear
- 1:04:49my white shirts, and that's where I get to wear like my
- 1:04:52green shirts. And that's what anything that's
- 1:04:53not black gets worn. And you are?
- 1:04:55Growing up in front of my eyes, I love it.
- 1:04:59I love no. Look at you watch.
- 1:05:02All right, let's see that case. Back to music.
- 1:05:04Back to music, since you guys recorded all this stuff,
- 1:05:08basically the way you guys wrote was all remote.
- 1:05:11Was anything written together, like in the same room, old
- 1:05:14school style, or is it all? I'm sure things are probably
- 1:05:17more arranged in person, but anything from oh, Track, you
- 1:05:21know, like, Oh yeah, you know, it was a glass mountain.
- 1:05:23We all were in the room together and we came up with the song.
- 1:05:25Glass Mountain would be Ryan and Ty so he could.
- 1:05:28It was, yeah. I mean, there's, there's all
- 1:05:30kind of like, like we were talking earlier there, like
- 1:05:33there's all kinds of collaboration and there's,
- 1:05:34there's the, you know, some, there's been some live cross
- 1:05:37collaboration too, Like when, when Tyler would come up with an
- 1:05:41idea, you know, he does have, like, you know, he does have a
- 1:05:45studio rig, but he just, you know, he feels more comfortable
- 1:05:48either having John track him or me track him.
- 1:05:50So there were a couple times where he came up to my place and
- 1:05:55we just, you know, he had, he had an idea and we worked it out
- 1:05:58together and we, you know, we sent it to the guys.
- 1:05:59They ate and ate it. I think the first time though,
- 1:06:02we were, we had gotten a show when we, when we announced our
- 1:06:07first show, that was really the first time, I think we were all
- 1:06:10in a room together kind of the old school way.
- 1:06:13And I, you know, it didn't suck, you know, it was, you know, we
- 1:06:17knew, right, We knew, right, Because I remember being like,
- 1:06:19well, this is the, this is the moment of truth, you know, I
- 1:06:22mean, you know, we've been, we've been talking and
- 1:06:24collaborating for so long. It's like a, it's like a, it's
- 1:06:27like a long distance relationship and people meeting
- 1:06:29for the first time, you know. So it's like is, do we you know,
- 1:06:31is it there or is it just, you know, does it just exist on a
- 1:06:35recording level? It's.
- 1:06:36Online. Dating with just like everything
- 1:06:39in common and you don't get a lot of the same likes.
- 1:06:41But how's it going to work in the room?
- 1:06:43But I think too, but, but you know, when we started working,
- 1:06:46you know, it's like, OK, we have this pile of songs and we have
- 1:06:49an opportunity to play in front of people.
- 1:06:50Now we can hash him out in a great, you know, we Tyler had
- 1:06:53gotten one of his friends to kind of clear out a garage for
- 1:06:55us. We, we, we all met up in there.
- 1:06:59It was old school, you know, that like this is where it kind
- 1:07:01of, you know, we, we use technology to make all the
- 1:07:04writing and all the art happen. But now we, it's almost kind of
- 1:07:07like Rocky 4, you know, you're going back-to-back to chopping
- 1:07:10wood and, and running through snow to, you know, to, to work
- 1:07:15through, you know, building muscle.
- 1:07:17And then that's exactly what it was.
- 1:07:18Now we're all in a, you know, Fast forward, we, we have a show
- 1:07:21in a few days. Brock flies in and we're all in
- 1:07:24this big sweaty garage hashing it out.
- 1:07:26And, and everyone, man, everyone's a workhorse.
- 1:07:28And, and I think that, you know, there is a plan, I think to be,
- 1:07:32you know, we have 3 records with, with Spine Farm.
- 1:07:35So this is only the beginning. I think that the next record
- 1:07:38you're going to see a little more of a organic dynamic.
- 1:07:40Because I know that Brock wants to take some time to, you know,
- 1:07:44come out to us a little more and, and be a little more part
- 1:07:46of the writing in a live setting.
- 1:07:48So, you know, but these rehearsals, these initial
- 1:07:52rehearsals for our first two shows definitely helped us have
- 1:07:56the confidence to know that it works.
- 1:07:58It's, you know, it worked. Yeah.
- 1:08:00It wasn't just a blind date, you know, So.
- 1:08:03Yeah. And.
- 1:08:04I did see you guys to do. I forgot.
- 1:08:06Yeah. You guys managed to do do your
- 1:08:09first two shows. I remember seeing them on
- 1:08:12Facebook about it. And then you guys did a tour.
- 1:08:14I'm blanking on it. I've tried to look up who you
- 1:08:17guys did a tour with. We haven't done it.
- 1:08:19Yeah, we haven't done. It was it just those two shows
- 1:08:21then? Yeah, I forgot who the two shows
- 1:08:23were with. The problem is, is like they
- 1:08:25were such good shows that they look like they should have been
- 1:08:29a tour package. And in in fact, like it makes a
- 1:08:33lot of sense. Like Kill switching gates,
- 1:08:34headlining a show with fit for an Autopsy and US opening sounds
- 1:08:37kind of like a touring package in in a way, you know, that kind
- 1:08:40of a thing. But it just happened to be our
- 1:08:41our first show and we've been lucky enough to have like our
- 1:08:44first and second show being some of like.
- 1:08:47Yeah, and different death ray vision was on that, too.
- 1:08:50They were too. It was just.
- 1:08:51Yeah. I mean, you couldn't.
- 1:08:52I mean, I mean that that night was amazing, you know?
- 1:08:55So. Yeah.
- 1:08:56And I had a few friends that were like, oh man, how's the
- 1:08:58tour going? I'm like, now that was that
- 1:08:59dude. Yeah.
- 1:09:00It was the one night. Yeah.
- 1:09:02And it was yeah. I wish it was more, but, you
- 1:09:04know, we did that. And then about a month later, we
- 1:09:07flew. We all flew up to Alaska to open
- 1:09:09for Three Days Grace on, you know, on Brock's turf.
- 1:09:12So and you know, that's another, you know, sold out, you know,
- 1:09:17capacity venue like I mean, our first two shows were we've been
- 1:09:21pretty lucky, you know, so you. Couldn't have asked for two, you
- 1:09:24know, better debut show on a second show.
- 1:09:27And even when we were telling all of our our friends at the
- 1:09:30show, people were coming up there like, hey, great job, that
- 1:09:33kind of a thing. I'm glad to see you guys out and
- 1:09:34doing things etcetera. So with everybody around, how
- 1:09:38did you guys make get work or whatever, like how long you been
- 1:09:40practicing for? And it's like you look at the
- 1:09:43watch and you're like, well, today's Friday, 3, three days,
- 1:09:463-3 days. Everybody kind of like does all
- 1:09:49of their homework on their own, keeps the chops up and then when
- 1:09:52we get together, the other thing is man is like, you know, guitar
- 1:09:55pro tab everything out and you can just hit play.
- 1:09:58And it's like you, I want to work on this part, loop it, you
- 1:10:00know, that kind of a thing. And I'm lucky enough to have all
- 1:10:02of the tracks here on each one of the sessions.
- 1:10:05So I just, I can play it in, you know, an infinum for as long as
- 1:10:10I watch us to practice too. And we just got in the room and
- 1:10:13we were just, since we had known one another, we'd all hung out
- 1:10:15together was just a matter of now we just have instruments in
- 1:10:17our hands when we're playing these songs we've been working
- 1:10:19on. And it came very, very, very
- 1:10:21naturally. And there was, there was no
- 1:10:23clog. There was no problem or anything
- 1:10:25like that. And we were, it was like what,
- 1:10:27what still blows my mind. It was like early June and early
- 1:10:31June anywhere, especially, you know, on the, the Northern
- 1:10:35Hemisphere could be 96° or it could be, you know, that kind of
- 1:10:38thing. We were in a garage, which was
- 1:10:39awesome just to practice in the garage made it feel more just
- 1:10:42like a band, but it could have been miserable as fuck if it was
- 1:10:47150° out and we're just like suffering in there.
- 1:10:50But it was perfect. It was like 60° in there and I
- 1:10:53was like, Oh my God, this is just absolutely perfect.
- 1:10:56Hashed everything out, went over all the things that we weren't
- 1:10:58able to work out ever before. And, you know, just hop on stage
- 1:11:02at the end of the week. So it was, I'm sure nerve
- 1:11:05racking for a lot of us just because it was like make this
- 1:11:07work, you know, and, and luckily we did.
- 1:11:10And I think that's just a testament more to just everybody
- 1:11:12doing it on their own to a point where they can bring it into a
- 1:11:16garage and we can just kind of vibe on everything and put it
- 1:11:19all together. Make it make it work.
- 1:11:20So do we have any plans for the album release we're doing like a
- 1:11:25like a listening party or anything coming up?
- 1:11:27Well, we can. Well, we do have a release show
- 1:11:30and that's, well, the, well, the album comes out May 2nd, but we
- 1:11:34do have a release show planned for June and that's going to be
- 1:11:37June 7th at Gabe's in Westfield, Mass.
- 1:11:40And yeah, we nice small, kind of smaller venue, you know, to kind
- 1:11:44of, you know, make it a, a nice, you know, cozy sort of vibe for
- 1:11:49everyone. We actually have Byzantine
- 1:11:52coming up for that one. So and then our friends and Hero
- 1:11:55and the Horror are also playing it.
- 1:11:57So it's going to be, it's going to be a party.
- 1:11:59It's going to be amazing. Other than that, we did have
- 1:12:03some plans, but they kind of fell through.
- 1:12:05So right now, at this very moment, we have that show
- 1:12:08planned, but we're beyond that. We're always writing.
- 1:12:11We're, we're actually about 3 or 4 songs into the next record.
- 1:12:14You know, we're, we're already sort of doing everything that
- 1:12:16John was just talking about with technology.
- 1:12:18It doesn't ever stop. We're we're yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:23And and so we're already kind of, you know, we, we put a, we
- 1:12:26put a real interest in writing and, and, and, you know, just
- 1:12:29expressing ourselves musically. And we really hope that we'll
- 1:12:33get, you know, I mean, there'll, there'll be an opportunity to
- 1:12:35get on the road. We just have to wait for the
- 1:12:37right one, kind of, you know, fall on fall on our lap.
- 1:12:40But I can say we do have one show and.
- 1:12:44That's going to be awesome, dude.
- 1:12:45If you if you want to come up, man, we absolutely.
- 1:12:51I've already talked to to Dave and he David Brodsky and he, he
- 1:12:55hasn't said one way or the other whether or not he's going to go,
- 1:12:58but he's like, Oh my God, that's so cool.
- 1:13:00And then he was, he didn't he didn't commit because at the
- 1:13:02same time he's going to run a past alley.
- 1:13:04Obviously, you know, that kind of a thing.
- 1:13:06But yeah, we're trying to get a contingent from the city, New
- 1:13:09Jersey, that kind of a thing up in that direction.
- 1:13:12And if you haven't seen mean any of the stuff that Tyler's been
- 1:13:15doing, he has rented this amazing space in Westfield.
- 1:13:21And it's all the theme like the Shining called the Gold Room.
- 1:13:25And it's right above this place, Gabe's that we're playing on
- 1:13:28June 7th. It's such a vibe he's been
- 1:13:30doing, you know, like kind of like real cool, unique events
- 1:13:33there between wine pairings and whiskey tastings and acoustic
- 1:13:38shows and all this stuff with all people in the local scene
- 1:13:41city of Holmes. Ryan was playing drums with us.
- 1:13:44We got a chance to play down at Gabe's whatever.
- 1:13:46And Gabe's got a vibe almost like it's it's it's almost the
- 1:13:50size of 2A sevens, if you could imagine two of those
- 1:13:54back-to-back. And it's so good.
- 1:13:57Good bar, but also good space as far as the amount of people that
- 1:14:01can be there. Amazing sound system for the the
- 1:14:04room because it's also a place that they do like Friday or
- 1:14:07Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights like club nights and
- 1:14:10Tyler bounces there. It's just like it's a cool
- 1:14:13hometown vibe that he's got going there in between what he's
- 1:14:16got upstairs with all the events at the Gold Room and what he's
- 1:14:20got going on downstairs with this as well as what has he done
- 1:14:23like maybe 5 or 6 shows at Gabe's and at least 10 or 15
- 1:14:27upstairs at the Gold Room, which also double S as our practice
- 1:14:31space in the time leading up to this show.
- 1:14:34So the, the, the week prior to it will be upstairs making noise
- 1:14:37when we can and practicing all that stuff.
- 1:14:39Brock comes into town and there's a couple of other things
- 1:14:42that I think Tyler has this the specific details that he'll be
- 1:14:46releasing over the course of the next month or so as far as
- 1:14:50details and some some other really cool things he's got in
- 1:14:52the mix that we'll also be sharing on, you know, our our
- 1:14:55Instagram and paradise slaves Instagram, our Facebook page,
- 1:14:59etcetera. So there's a couple of things in
- 1:15:00the works, but that show will be awesome because it's nice and
- 1:15:03small, but it's also I know people that are huge 36 crazy
- 1:15:07fist fans that are like, wait a second, Westfield, MA.
- 1:15:09I'm going to be able to go see one of my favorite singers of
- 1:15:12all time at a place called Gabe's 252.
- 1:15:15And it's like, yeah, yeah, get your tickets, man, before they
- 1:15:18sell out, you know, like, so it and it's always awesome.
- 1:15:21It always feels like a homecoming going back there just
- 1:15:24because there's so much family and friends there that I I know
- 1:15:28I'm looking forward to it. I can't wait.
- 1:15:29Yeah, me too, man. So all that being said, you're
- 1:15:33going to basically play, if not the whole damn record.
- 1:15:37Should people expect or you know, hope for, I'm sure people
- 1:15:40are gonna hope for like, oh, they might do this, this song
- 1:15:43from each of one of your guys, uh, bands and stuff.
- 1:15:46You know, what's I don't is that, is that a thing you guys
- 1:15:49would consider? I know some bands like they're
- 1:15:50like, Oh yeah, you know, you know what's from these other
- 1:15:52bands. Here's one song from his but.
- 1:15:54Not that one song, Not you know, I'm not and I'm not trying to
- 1:15:57shoot it down that that that that would be very cool.
- 1:16:00Not this time, though, We're going to make it a very paradise
- 1:16:02slaves related, because I mean, it's it's a it's an album
- 1:16:05release. We want to we want to celebrate
- 1:16:07this album. We do, we do.
- 1:16:09We are going to put some covers, a couple covers to kind of, you
- 1:16:13know, break up the the monotony a little bit.
- 1:16:15Some super fun covers. Obviously you know, one of them,
- 1:16:17somebody to shove, but we do have some other stuff in in the
- 1:16:21mix of it. But no, we're not going to be
- 1:16:24treading on the old, the old stuff, you know, not, not this
- 1:16:29time. But that it is a good idea.
- 1:16:30It's been, it's been floated around.
- 1:16:31Yeah, even if you, I mean, even if you did it justice, this,
- 1:16:34this that, that stuff lives in people's hearts and minds so
- 1:16:39deeply that even just to kind of, you know, touch on it or
- 1:16:43whatever like that might be doing a disservice to all the
- 1:16:45people that were involved in it before.
- 1:16:46And that's not like me saying it on the die casting or whatever.
- 1:16:49But if if somebody hopped on stage and said, Hey, I know all
- 1:16:52of the 36 Crazy Fists song, why don't we play a 36 crazy this
- 1:16:55song, I'd immediately be like, I don't, I don't know, man.
- 1:16:58Like that is that's gospel. You know that that stuff just
- 1:17:00exists on such a, a different place that I, I would feel
- 1:17:05strange trying to trying to, you know, in any way hold the candle
- 1:17:09to that, you know? Have Broxing singled out.
- 1:17:13I know he probably would, he probably would, he probably
- 1:17:16would. And I, and I'm sure, you know,
- 1:17:18wherever Paul is right now, he would be psyched for it 'cause
- 1:17:21he always loved, you know, he always loved Brock's voice and
- 1:17:23everything like that. And, and Paul was also one of
- 1:17:25those dudes that just, you know, loved, you know, the, the
- 1:17:28oblivion, embracing oblivion, like we always say.
- 1:17:30And just kind of like, oh cool, let's do a let's do a song.
- 1:17:33Have we practiced it? Fuck it, let's just do it.
- 1:17:35You know, let's just, you know, we're all here.
- 1:17:37We're all here in this in a matter.
- 1:17:38So, but no, like, like Ryan said, no, no plans for that.
- 1:17:43But at the same time, there are a couple of little, you know,
- 1:17:45surprises and and whatnot. And that week leading up to it,
- 1:17:48like I said, I'm just looking forward to that because Ryan
- 1:17:51knows I just love playing. So when it comes to rehearsing,
- 1:17:54when it comes to just being around everybody too, it's just
- 1:17:56it's such a great vibe. We have fun, man.
- 1:17:59No, yeah, definitely. Yeah, we have, we have a good
- 1:18:02time together. So we're looking forward to,
- 1:18:04we're looking forward to just the whole process of, you know,
- 1:18:06getting everything together and then, you know, it's going to,
- 1:18:08it's going to be sad when it's over, but you know, it's not
- 1:18:10going to be, it certainly won't be the last time we play.
- 1:18:13But right now it's the only, it's the only one on the
- 1:18:16calendar. So we just go, we, we just go
- 1:18:18from there. Man, I wish like I'm hoping for
- 1:18:21as much success as you guys can possibly handle.
- 1:18:24Yeah, Thank you. We'll take it as it comes.
- 1:18:26We, we, I think we've, we've always said that we had
- 1:18:29absolutely no expectations in this like.
- 1:18:31Oh yeah, yeah. We said we, we set the bar very
- 1:18:33realistic. And it's like, I mean, the, the
- 1:18:36fact that anyone outside the five of us has heard these songs
- 1:18:40is that's good enough, you know? And, and I know it might sound a
- 1:18:43little cliche, but the response that so far, I mean, it's, it's
- 1:18:48looking pretty good. I mean, we're, we're all stoked
- 1:18:50and we're, we're all so grateful for anyone to have any, you
- 1:18:53know, any, you know, we're grateful for anyone to take a
- 1:18:56take a listen to us. So we appreciate it.
- 1:18:58I think the whole self release thing and like a the idea of
- 1:19:02like, you know, if we put this out there, you know, should we
- 1:19:04print CDs like we'd like? We've also been in bands and
- 1:19:07that kind of a thing that did things a while back.
- 1:19:09So we we're not necessarily versed in how people do it, you
- 1:19:12know, releasing an EP or single by single or whatever.
- 1:19:15We're playing by those rules or the things that work the best
- 1:19:18for spine farm in this. Case, yeah.
- 1:19:20And yeah, shout out to shout out to Tim and Darren, Spine Farm.
- 1:19:23I mean, those guys, those guys like, again, you know, when,
- 1:19:27when you put out a, you know, I, I mean, I've been in bands and
- 1:19:30I've been signed and, and you know, it is just, it's a
- 1:19:33different time. And I, you know, Tim and Darren
- 1:19:36have been able to help us navigate these sort of, you
- 1:19:39know, like, okay, this is how, this is how you do it.
- 1:19:41You got to put out singles, You got to kind of test this, tease
- 1:19:44this, you know, and, and that they're, they're, they've been
- 1:19:46awesome about that. So, you know, shout out to Spine
- 1:19:49Farm for helping us out on that. They've been a great partner and
- 1:19:52collaborator for us. And a super unexpected part of
- 1:19:56this. Very unexpected, yeah.
- 1:19:58I mean, we, we didn't put any, we did not put this project
- 1:20:01together to, to get signed or make a single cent so.
- 1:20:05Not to mention. Anything that happens now is
- 1:20:07just a bonus. We've all been there, done that.
- 1:20:11So it's also one of those things where it's kind of like once
- 1:20:13bitten or twice bitten, three times shy or whatever it may be.
- 1:20:16So going into it, we, we were kind of like, well, would we
- 1:20:18want a label, you know, like that?
- 1:20:20We've, we've had some in my personal experience, had some,
- 1:20:24you know, some ups and downs with that in the past.
- 1:20:27So who knows, But this was kind of like a breath of fresh air
- 1:20:29like, oh shit, this is how people that care operate.
- 1:20:32And they came so highly recommended from, from Brock
- 1:20:34because I guess when 36 landed there, they just had just a
- 1:20:38great experience with, with Tim and Darren just on a personal
- 1:20:41level, Kish and all those guys over there.
- 1:20:44So it was, it was a known quantity as well as a
- 1:20:47respectful. And, and it's been one of those
- 1:20:49things where it's like, all right, guys, you know, tell us
- 1:20:51what we got to do because we don't necessarily know, you
- 1:20:55know, I got on Spotify, but you know, like we need to navigate
- 1:20:58this. And so they've been very, very
- 1:21:00helpful with that and just looking forward to it, man.
- 1:21:03We have no expectation involved and there's merchandise and they
- 1:21:06we have vinyl. You can pre-order ACD and vinyl
- 1:21:09and a wall. It's nuts.
- 1:21:11It's nuts to even say that. What you know, like that just so
- 1:21:14cool to me, you know, nonetheless, it was it's been
- 1:21:17it's been a learning experience, but at the same time it's we can
- 1:21:20get you the link too. If you wanted to do any of the
- 1:21:22the pre-order stuff or put a link in the in the video.
- 1:21:25All in the description when this comes out man.
- 1:21:27Oh hell yeah, I take care of it all.
- 1:21:29Hell, he knows what he's doing. He knows.
- 1:21:30What he does, he does. I will say it is it must be
- 1:21:33really refreshing being born in the 19 1900s to have a new
- 1:21:39record deal. Like so much easier than the
- 1:21:42first time you guys had record deals in your previous projects.
- 1:21:45It's like you had to like those those years of build up to even
- 1:21:49get somebody to look at you. And now it's like, Oh yeah, I
- 1:21:52remember you from this other thing.
- 1:21:53Hey, we're all friends. You're everybody's the same age
- 1:21:55or similar mindsets. And it's like, oh, here, yeah.
- 1:21:59You know what? I like your thing.
- 1:21:59I'll put your thing out on my record.
- 1:22:00Like say what now? Yeah.
- 1:22:02It's one of the things where like this.
- 1:22:05What a difference day makes. Let alone an entire fucking
- 1:22:09century. We are in a different century.
- 1:22:12There's my cat, by the way. Speaking of centuries.
- 1:22:16She's been living couple couple 100 years or whatever.
- 1:22:18She's my familiar. We go way, way, way back, way
- 1:22:21back. Like Victorian times when I got
- 1:22:23bit, you know, that kind of a thing myself.
- 1:22:25Shinobi, come say hi to the boys.
- 1:22:27Age is pretty fly for a white guy.
- 1:22:29Not all white guys age very well, but.
- 1:22:31He's a very, he's a very mysterious man.
- 1:22:33It's it's got those good jeans, that gypsy jeans or something
- 1:22:36like like that. I don't know.
- 1:22:38This is the one that keeps me just going.
- 1:22:40Shinobi, say hi to the boys. Do something.
- 1:22:42Hey Shinobi. Shinobi say hi.
- 1:22:44Ghost cult loves cats. Ghost Cult loves cats you
- 1:22:47probably get but she's not doing a whole lot.
- 1:22:50But she's really fluffy and pretty cute so I'll just put her
- 1:22:53down and let her do cats. Do.
- 1:22:55You. I like that idea.
- 1:22:56It goes close. Those love cats.
- 1:22:57My partner it's very cat friendly.
- 1:22:59Dude, we. Put the most caterday post up.
- 1:23:01I'm like God bro come on what? This is a metal why are you
- 1:23:04putting this on water? Instagram dude.
- 1:23:05Ryan just did a a drum play through video that he just
- 1:23:09released recently. It was awesome to see.
- 1:23:10And Ryan, we got to talk after this 'cause I got some questions
- 1:23:13for. You alright?
- 1:23:14Alright? Yeah, alright.
- 1:23:15Absolutely. And we did a guitar playthrough
- 1:23:17video and I, I toyed with the idea.
- 1:23:19I was like, maybe I'll ask the guys whatever.
- 1:23:21Like I don't want to take too many liberties or whatever, but
- 1:23:23I'm like, I'd like to hide all of our cats heads in the guitar
- 1:23:26playthrough video and have a contest and anybody correctly
- 1:23:28identifies where they are. We'll just give him some prizes.
- 1:23:31So in the guitar playthrough video, there's floating heads of
- 1:23:35Ryan's cat Wiley, who's absolutely he is.
- 1:23:39He is the man that Speaking of like living for centuries.
- 1:23:42He is a a well versed old gentleman.
- 1:23:45Absolutely, Absolutely. Definitely and he shows up on
- 1:23:48Ryan's kick drum at one point, you know, his head goes flying
- 1:23:51around and like and so every people were able to do it.
- 1:23:54So we got a little little prizes that are cat oriented as well as
- 1:23:58cat designed. And I'll, I'll get you something
- 1:24:01OJ, I'll get you some, some cat stuff if you want to keep the
- 1:24:04paradise slaves and ghost ghost called cat stuff going here.
- 1:24:07Comes a new collab. Yeah, there you go.
- 1:24:11We can have we could have a podcast at the Meow Parlor down
- 1:24:13the Lower East Side. We got to, yeah, we definitely
- 1:24:16got to hang out, man. It's been too, Yeah, it's been
- 1:24:18too. Like, I can see you randomly
- 1:24:19here and there, and now I'm randomly seeing you and get on
- 1:24:22the zoo. Exactly.
- 1:24:23That's so randomly. Not, not really, but if you went
- 1:24:26out out to your window and screamed, I could probably hear
- 1:24:29you like we're we're only 70 blocks away or something like
- 1:24:32that. I'm surprised like a fire engine
- 1:24:34hasn't gone by and you're like, wait a second.
- 1:24:36I I shut the windows. I have both windows shut.
- 1:24:38I'm just like hoping. I'm just hoping for the best.
- 1:24:41Yeah, it's a good thing to hear it.
- 1:24:43I heard a helicopter and I was like, I bet you if I listen hard
- 1:24:46enough that I could probably hear the helicopter on your side
- 1:24:48of it. So I was like, we're really not
- 1:24:50that far away from one another, so.
- 1:24:51It's crazy. I love this.
- 1:24:53I like the city life now. It's kind of, it's interesting.
- 1:24:56It's interesting. In our old age, you know.
- 1:24:59Like hey man, I appreciate you guys so much for this as we get
- 1:25:03ready to wind this after winding this down.
- 1:25:04Appreciate your time. You know we've dude.
- 1:25:06You. Thank you for having us man,
- 1:25:08this is really fun. I gotta I wonder like.
- 1:25:10How much? How much of your time can we
- 1:25:11really waste? Like we got fun.
- 1:25:13And I pay, I pay for like the unlimited thing.
- 1:25:15So I'm good to go. Like nice and.
- 1:25:17Ryan. Podcast I love a long podcast
- 1:25:19cause these interviews to me are like are like I feel things
- 1:25:22should be more conversational than anything you know, here's a
- 1:25:25question. Give me an answer.
- 1:25:27It's like. Oh yeah, we'll talk here off.
- 1:25:28Yeah. Everything goes where it flows
- 1:25:31organically or. The less transactional they can
- 1:25:33be, the more interesting I always find them.
- 1:25:35You know what I mean? Like.
- 1:25:36Sometimes they get so boring when they're just very answer
- 1:25:39yes yes. Yeah.
- 1:25:41I like it when it's just like seemed like this, you know, just
- 1:25:44friends talking, even if I've just met you for the first time,
- 1:25:46like you, Ryan, I like everything to feel like oh, just
- 1:25:48friends talking and just chatting.
- 1:25:50It's. Like absolutely right back at
- 1:25:51you, man. Thank you And.
- 1:25:52I got to say this things are like full circley kind of
- 1:25:55things. I got to say this record starts
- 1:25:57because I had this record played a few times, a bunch of times
- 1:26:00really, and I had it on like repeat.
- 1:26:03Am I like tripping? Like the way it starts is kind
- 1:26:05of like fairly and it kind of ends kind of similarly.
- 1:26:09Is that done intentionally? Because it's like when you hit,
- 1:26:11when it replays itself, you know?
- 1:26:13I feel like John who notes that seem similar.
- 1:26:17Yeah, John. That's my Dream Theater like
- 1:26:19nerd stuff where this record ends here in the next song for
- 1:26:22the next record starts with that tonality into the next record
- 1:26:26just tripping. I don't know.
- 1:26:27No, you're not, John. I'm going to let John field this
- 1:26:30one because that is exactly what was John.
- 1:26:34You must be like wowed right now.
- 1:26:37Yeah, I'm, I'm like, oh, Jay, man, you are, you are on just
- 1:26:41another level, man. I appreciate that because these
- 1:26:43are, these are the dumb things that I like.
- 1:26:45I, I, I spend hours thinking about and like, should I put
- 1:26:49this into, you know, into place or whatever like that.
- 1:26:51We made sure that all of the songs started on the downbeat
- 1:26:54from the last song, you know, that kind of a thing.
- 1:26:56And if you have it on loop and you just hit play, it will
- 1:27:01return on the downbeat and it will return in the same, it
- 1:27:05drops into the next song on the downbeat.
- 1:27:07And as a drummer, you probably noticed that like, oh, OK, I
- 1:27:10can, I can feel this. So it doesn't necessarily it
- 1:27:13ebbs and flows, but it has a a structure as far as you
- 1:27:18anticipate the next song. And it hits you when you if you
- 1:27:21were just kind of like bobbing your head to it, whether it's
- 1:27:231/4 note on her eighth note and at the very end of the album.
- 1:27:27Yeah, it's got a little outro that kind of does a little
- 1:27:30chordal thing and then it drops back to the note that the album
- 1:27:32starts on. So if you listen to it in the
- 1:27:34loop, it will start right back over.
- 1:27:36Yeah, glad you picked up on it. That's really fucking cool.
- 1:27:39I. Just I kind of enjoy those kind
- 1:27:42of like tonality. I don't know if the right words
- 1:27:44for it. I'm just making my own.
- 1:27:46But yeah, the tonality of like this ends this way.
- 1:27:50Then it kind of snake eating its tail, a Cerberus, it kind of
- 1:27:54eats its own tail. It's like your back to the
- 1:27:56start. Here's the end of the cycle, and
- 1:27:58now you're back to the beginning and they all flow similarly.
- 1:28:01You, Sir. Or onto something.
- 1:28:03Alexa. Nothing.
- 1:28:04Nothing gets by you, Omar. Seriously.
- 1:28:06Damn. Right, so discerning listener
- 1:28:09right there, you know, and and that that also was kind of like,
- 1:28:11well, thank you for listening to the entire album and its
- 1:28:14completion. Paradise Slaves appreciates the
- 1:28:16fact that you were able to do that, you got through it and
- 1:28:19that kind of thing. So you get extra credit for that
- 1:28:20and we give you a plus plus Gold Star for the day, you know, that
- 1:28:23kind of thing. But yeah, that's really cool.
- 1:28:25I'm I'm glad that you picked up on that.
- 1:28:27Maybe it's, you know, those things that you you don't
- 1:28:29necessarily notice, but you kind of notice them.
- 1:28:32Like I've always loved that about albums.
- 1:28:33D laughs from the Comatorium, one of my favorite albums of all
- 1:28:37time, the Mars Volta. They had elements of that where
- 1:28:40you never knew when one song ended and the next song began if
- 1:28:44you were just to listen to it in it's complete duration.
- 1:28:46And I always loved that because it's an experience.
- 1:28:48It's kind of like the, you know, the way that you used to listen
- 1:28:50to an album back in the day. You'd buy it, you'd hit play,
- 1:28:53and you'd look in the liner notes and just enjoy.
- 1:28:56You said earlier you guys are already like writing elements of
- 1:28:59the next record like to you guys.
- 1:29:01Yeah, this is this is old to you guys.
- 1:29:04It's a continuing process. Yeah, you're on to the.
- 1:29:07Next stop. One stop.
- 1:29:08Yeah, like what have you guys, I guess.
- 1:29:10Yeah, this should. Yeah.
- 1:29:12Not that sophomore slump record. There's no way it can be.
- 1:29:15But I feel like you guys have learned what?
- 1:29:18What have you guys learned from each other when you wrote the
- 1:29:20first song? It's like, OK, like I'm writing
- 1:29:22this song. Hey, I'm bringing this song to
- 1:29:24the table for the first time. And now you guys completed an
- 1:29:26album. Now, you know, oh, I know what X
- 1:29:29person likes. Oh, I know.
- 1:29:30Oh, this will be something I think he would like.
- 1:29:32And this one would like, you know, And people forget about
- 1:29:34the bass player, you know, some people forget about Brad, you
- 1:29:36know, And it's like. How can you forget about Brad?
- 1:29:40You know Brad. Brad the brother man, we love
- 1:29:42him. Yeah, you.
- 1:29:44Know Brad? Actually, Brad, actually.
- 1:29:46Is good in the mixing of the bass because sometimes people
- 1:29:49still mix basses low sometimes and it's like, you know,
- 1:29:52sometimes basses get kind of muddied between kick drums
- 1:29:55sometimes or these they get lots of the mix sometimes.
- 1:29:57And I think Brad sits right in the middle, right in a good spot
- 1:30:01where you can, you don't have to struggle to hear him.
- 1:30:03And I find that. Speaking of bass, Speaking of
- 1:30:05bass, your buddy George Pond agrees from disciples of Verity
- 1:30:08because you know, he he wants to hear that bass.
- 1:30:11He wants to hear that bass. The the The thing is man is like
- 1:30:14Brad is one of those dudes that is just like so tried and true
- 1:30:17and like legitimately. Tyler took over for Brad's
- 1:30:21position when we were touring for internal revolution because
- 1:30:24Brad injured his arm stayed on as the tour manager.
- 1:30:27Well, Tyler played bass for die cast on that seven dust tour.
- 1:30:32Yeah, it was an early it was an early tour that we did.
- 1:30:34I can't remember. ANYWAYS, the the Long story
- 1:30:36short being that Brad has always been there going back to
- 1:30:40breeding ground when when when Paul and he played in a band
- 1:30:43that we stole, you know, Paul from and brought him to die
- 1:30:46cast. So like he is just always been a
- 1:30:48fixture and he's just couldn't be a nicer guy and more genuine
- 1:30:51guy. And like Ryan said, he wrote he
- 1:30:54there's a brand new song that is going to be on the next record
- 1:30:56that he he wrote in entirety. So stoked to get, you know, you
- 1:31:00know, working on that that kind of a thing.
- 1:31:02Once once. I don't know exactly when we'll
- 1:31:04say here's the end of this album cycle just because it's been so
- 1:31:08long and so stretched out. But once the album drops, see
- 1:31:11what it does, see what we can do with it and what people want to
- 1:31:14hear from us as far as they want us to play out or not.
- 1:31:18You know, we're totally open to that.
- 1:31:19But at the same time, you know, there's at least, what, 3 or 4
- 1:31:23songs that I'm aware of that you guys have been working on.
- 1:31:26Yeah, we have. Yeah, we're about, we're about
- 1:31:28four or five deep now. So there you go, four or five
- 1:31:31deep. But you know, they can still be
- 1:31:33hashed out. So they're only in the demo
- 1:31:35phase. They're not in any sort of like
- 1:31:37completion, just we're still kind of letting them marinate
- 1:31:40and we'll go back and, you know, it's kind of like the first
- 1:31:43batch, you know, we, we just, you know, there'll be some
- 1:31:46there. I remember even like there were
- 1:31:49some, you know, just tiny little, you know, rests and and
- 1:31:53fills that that John had sort of like polished up on one of the
- 1:31:58songs he did. Yeah.
- 1:32:00For those who watched the sea. And I remember just being like,
- 1:32:02wait a minute. Oh, I didn't notice that the
- 1:32:03last time. He's like, oh, yeah.
- 1:32:04Well, I, I, I took the guitar out during that, during that
- 1:32:07fill or something, you know, just we're always kind of.
- 1:32:09Eternally tinkering. Just eternally tinkering, you
- 1:32:12know, and the eternally tinkering.
- 1:32:13Yes. I'm over here as the guitar
- 1:32:16player who's writing drums, which is like the worst thing in
- 1:32:19every drummer's life. So it's kind of like, Oh yeah,
- 1:32:21if I had 6 arms, I could fucking play that.
- 1:32:23But I don't, so I'm not going to, I'm going to play this, you
- 1:32:26know what I mean? So there's always that byproduct
- 1:32:29of Ryan actually getting behind the kit and playing it and that
- 1:32:33kind of a thing and then that, you know, importing that into
- 1:32:35the song. But I as far as what we've
- 1:32:37learned from one another, I have personally learned that
- 1:32:40everybody is a like not I knew I knew everybody was a phenomenal
- 1:32:45songwriter, but I didn't know to the level of of their
- 1:32:47songwriting ability to such time as we heard, you know, this new
- 1:32:51track, this new track. What do you think about this
- 1:32:53etcetera, as well as I'm that guy that was always, you know,
- 1:32:56yes, and can we can we take something and and make it even
- 1:32:59better? That kind of a thing.
- 1:33:00If the answer to that is no, then that's great.
- 1:33:03But like with fever, there was a like I I almost hear like a
- 1:33:06little overdub or whatever. And you were just kind of like
- 1:33:08cook, go for it, do it, do do whatever you'd like, that kind
- 1:33:11of a thing. And I was like, take it or leave
- 1:33:13it. And I kind of thing and I was
- 1:33:14happy to take it away if it, if it, but you were you were
- 1:33:16excited about that and you were happy with it.
- 1:33:18So as far as I was concerned, the collaboration really works.
- 1:33:22And if we're going to be able to be collaborative together in one
- 1:33:25room, all the better. And I think that we're going to
- 1:33:28be this time around which which will just make it even even
- 1:33:32easier and more more of a love fest, more of just a this is
- 1:33:36this is fun. Thank you guys.
- 1:33:38You know that kind of a thing because I always look forward to
- 1:33:40getting, you know. Yeah, fun is the name of the
- 1:33:42game, so they like to have fun. As much fun as this is, you
- 1:33:46know, I can't think of anything else I want to mention about
- 1:33:50this record. Yeah, man.
- 1:33:51And they have a album release show in June in Massachusetts.
- 1:33:56And all of our socials pretty, pretty easy to get around, you
- 1:33:59know, that kind of a thing. The other thing is with it, with
- 1:34:02such a strange unique name like Paradise Slaves, you can, if you
- 1:34:05search for it, you're going to find it.
- 1:34:06You know, you're also going to find a whole lot of horrible
- 1:34:08things that you don't want to find, I'm sure.
- 1:34:11But at the same time, hopefully we'll be closer to the top of
- 1:34:13the list. And you know you can get most
- 1:34:16recent information on the Facebook in the.
- 1:34:18Right behind Paradise Lost. Exactly, exactly.
- 1:34:21And I don't know, there's there's somebody slave paradise
- 1:34:26who made a song or whatever, like because somebody was like,
- 1:34:28I listened to the song and it was different than I expected.
- 1:34:30And I'm like, should be the URL. And it was somebody who just
- 1:34:33created like this ambient song and it was called Slave
- 1:34:36Paradise. And I was like, no, no, that's
- 1:34:38yeah, that's not us, but cool. Hey, you know, may never have
- 1:34:42heard of this, this band had it not been for the the name of
- 1:34:44the, you know, the Brock found and kind of stuck.
- 1:34:47So, you know, we'll take it. We'll take it, man.
- 1:34:50Well, I hope to hear more of your gentleman singing on the
- 1:34:53next the future records and future stuff, because I think
- 1:34:57you guys sound great. I.
- 1:34:58Think those faders come down? Those faders come down.
- 1:35:00I mean, it would, truly. Together, if I you know, I don't
- 1:35:03know if it's all Brock on the album, but in the video,
- 1:35:06whatever you guys look like you're all singing and whatever
- 1:35:08the little pieces I've seen here and there, it's like yo, the
- 1:35:10little live pieces I've seen online.
- 1:35:12Why not man? Just, you know.
- 1:35:13I don't think there's any. Songs, voices.
- 1:35:14There's definitely. Not any.
- 1:35:16Yeah, that's right. Well, dude, there's no solo
- 1:35:18tracks. There's no, there's no Ryan
- 1:35:20Manning. You know, like Jazz Odyssey
- 1:35:22where he's singing and playing the drums at the same time just
- 1:35:25by himself. Except for the not.
- 1:35:27Yet anyways. Not yet, not yet.
- 1:35:29But umm, no, it melds. It melds pretty well together.
- 1:35:32So, oh, he's got a cough button. You got a cough button man.
- 1:35:36Yeah, Slick, slick. It went dark.
- 1:35:38I got nervous. Oh no, that's it.
- 1:35:40It's like you button on top. It's like like I know how to
- 1:35:42keep the room quiet and shut the fuck up.
- 1:35:44The like whoever I'm talking with talk.
- 1:35:47But you you could also probably like reach over the camera
- 1:35:49wouldn't even see it and you could just mute them whenever
- 1:35:51you wanted to and you just kind of like.
- 1:35:53I've never, I barely do. Like I'm trying to just get
- 1:35:57ahead on like all my stuff and work on other podcasts.
- 1:36:00That's a music related metal and rock movies podcast.
- 1:36:03I haven't looked at the name yet where it's like, I mean, this is
- 1:36:05a metal movie or a cartoon. Hey, let's just talk about that
- 1:36:08for this movie. Let's talk about the dirt.
- 1:36:09Let's talk about, you know, Lords of Chaos, any of that
- 1:36:12stuff that's like metal and rock related.
- 1:36:14It could be an episode about it. Ever.
- 1:36:16That's awesome. I already have my Co host
- 1:36:18already, you know, you might know my Co host.
- 1:36:20I can't really talk about it because we haven't really talked
- 1:36:22about it. Yeah, we got to figure out
- 1:36:24scheduling, you know. Hey, dude, we're interested.
- 1:36:26We're all about that kind of stuff.
- 1:36:27He hit up Tyler too. I mean, he'll, he'll probably
- 1:36:29come on it. Yeah.
- 1:36:31Tyler probably knows my my person.
- 1:36:34Oh, nice, nice dude. Well, he'll, he'll pop up on a
- 1:36:37Zoom and he'll be at the Gold Room and it's all Shining
- 1:36:39themed. It's all The Shining.
- 1:36:41So it's it's totally got a vibe for that.
- 1:36:43And we love talking about horror movies, you know.
- 1:36:45But if we continue talking, we'll Jesus Christ, if we
- 1:36:48continue talking, we'll just like eat up everybody's time.
- 1:36:51Sorry. Oh, yeah, I'm going to go watch
- 1:36:52sitters tomorrow. I'm going to go watch that one
- 1:36:53tomorrow. I did see Sinners Doubt.
- 1:36:56I'm looking forward to that. I just saw that trailer the
- 1:36:58other day for the first time. I was like, all right, I'm in.
- 1:37:00I have a list. It's literally just making the
- 1:37:02time to like, I got to get better at time management.
- 1:37:04It's like I need to fucking start playing music again.
- 1:37:07I need to start playing drums because yeah.
- 1:37:08You and me both. I was like, Jesus Christ, I need
- 1:37:10to like fucking play music more. It's like I kind of took a break
- 1:37:13because, you know, you get that band drama.
- 1:37:15It's like I don't want to play anymore.
- 1:37:16I like I lost the love and it's like I do miss it.
- 1:37:19That's how I ended up getting like roped into like doing this
- 1:37:21thing with with my partner because I know him from Castle
- 1:37:24heights roll. Like we all learned, we all met
- 1:37:25from from from there, you know? So it's like it, just like, man,
- 1:37:30I got to fucking be in a band again.
- 1:37:33You got to find a Ryan, a Brock, a Tyler and a Brad.
- 1:37:36You know that guy. Just just, you know.
- 1:37:38Just say. Dime a dozen, dime a dozen man,
- 1:37:43but no legitimately man when you find The thing is, is also with
- 1:37:47the expectations involved like this just goes back to that
- 1:37:49entirely where we were just having fun doing it.
- 1:37:52If it's all the light of day, great.
- 1:37:54If a couple of people listen to it, even better.
- 1:37:56So with those expectations at a a, A as a working point, working
- 1:38:00forward with them, that is super helpful because all of a sudden
- 1:38:03people don't have different expectations for the final
- 1:38:08product. So as long as there's that
- 1:38:09communication there or whatever like that in any band, it's like
- 1:38:12being in a relationship with four other people.
- 1:38:14You know, it takes time, it takes effort.
- 1:38:16And if you don't put out, you know, what you need to, you're
- 1:38:18not going to get back what you're expecting.
- 1:38:20So yeah, dude, you know, it's just deep breaths.
- 1:38:24Like yeah, I played like I, I played it for you.
- 1:38:27Like one of the projects I have, like I'm literally having like 2
- 1:38:29bands. I have two different sonically
- 1:38:32sounding bands with similar members.
- 1:38:34And it's just like, yeah, we need to get together to go do
- 1:38:37this. Like we need to record this shit
- 1:38:39properly. And I'm like, I don't like the
- 1:38:41digital drums. Like if you listen to Ghost
- 1:38:43Colt, like the intros to our our videos and the outros of our
- 1:38:47videos is one of our songs, is one of my songs I used to play
- 1:38:51live. And now it's like, yeah, we kind
- 1:38:53of like digital up it. This sounds a little cooler now.
- 1:38:56Like, shit, I gotta relearn how to play my own song.
- 1:38:58Yeah, I was like, damn, why did it make it sounds better?
- 1:39:03Yeah. You know, so I got that learning
- 1:39:05curve ahead of me of like, you know, learning old songs.
- 1:39:08And it's like I got we're all still alive.
- 1:39:10And again, yeah, people fucking dying left and right now It's
- 1:39:13like, shit, like, you know what, maybe I should like, hurry up.
- 1:39:15And the clock is ticking, you know.
- 1:39:18And, and I hate to say it because like, it's just for me,
- 1:39:20it's a constant reminder. It's a, you know, losing Marco
- 1:39:24this week, losing Kevin last week, you know, that kind of a
- 1:39:26thing. It, it reminds you, it puts
- 1:39:27everything into perspective, right?
- 1:39:29It puts everything into respective like I'm my own worst
- 1:39:32enemy. If I like, you know, sleep till
- 1:39:3410:00 and I'm like, man, I could have done a whole lot more if I
- 1:39:37woke up or something like that. But sometimes my, my favorite
- 1:39:40pastime outside of music and doing all that kind of stuff is
- 1:39:43laying down next to my cat, sleeping, waking up and opening
- 1:39:46my eyes and be like, oh gosh, you're just a fun friend.
- 1:39:49Thank you for being there and going back to sleep and
- 1:39:51listening to our per. It's like, like our priorities
- 1:39:54have changed, but at the same time, there's something to be
- 1:39:57said for time management, which I am horrible all that.
- 1:40:00So I, if you figure out how to work that out, let me know.
- 1:40:02But at the same time, it's, it's a matter of like, you know, how
- 1:40:07variety is the spice of life. I always find myself longing to
- 1:40:11do the things that I that that your soul wants you to do when
- 1:40:15you're doing other things. So I think that with that
- 1:40:18variety comes that desire to carve out that time and manage
- 1:40:23that time moving forward from that point because the only
- 1:40:27thing you want to do. When you're doing something else
- 1:40:30is perhaps something else if you're not necessarily in the
- 1:40:32mindset to be doing that right. And so it's always kind of like
- 1:40:35that, that distant memory that you're getting nostalgia for
- 1:40:40before it happens. But it's going finally coming
- 1:40:42through on the stuff and, you know, buckling down and doing
- 1:40:45it. But you got time, man.
- 1:40:46You got plenty of time. Yeah, you know, as long as I'm
- 1:40:49still above ground, I got time. Oh hell yeah, man.
- 1:40:51So besides Paradise Slaves, do you guys have anything else
- 1:40:54going on? Other projects you're working
- 1:40:56on? I think you said you were doing
- 1:40:58a Blitz Kid album later possibly?
- 1:41:00Maybe. Yes, I'm going, I'm heading down
- 1:41:04with the guys. We're we're going down to Jersey
- 1:41:07to, you know, basically drop, you know, drop the basics on 10
- 1:41:11new Blitz kid tunes for a new record that'll probably be out
- 1:41:14this year. And then we go, we're, we're,
- 1:41:16we're going to Europe doing some festivals and then we go to the
- 1:41:21UK and then we do have sort of a Midwest tour in September.
- 1:41:25And then after that we go back to Europe with Wednesday 13 for
- 1:41:29a Halloween tour. So what's kid is kind of kind of
- 1:41:33busy around like the spooky season, as you can probably
- 1:41:37figure out why. So, but that's, you know,
- 1:41:39besides that, I mean, that's, you know, that and the, you
- 1:41:42know, constantly kind of in the paradise slaves chat, working on
- 1:41:45new ideas. We're, you know, we're always
- 1:41:47collaborating and just staying as busy as we possibly can.
- 1:41:51And you drown. I get, I'm lucky man, because
- 1:41:55like outside of some event stuff that I do or whatever, I just
- 1:41:58sit here and write music and and like get it licensed, like
- 1:42:02little sync licensing and that kind of a thing.
- 1:42:04So since I'm always writing music is always stuff that
- 1:42:07doesn't have a place. And I've been once again, time
- 1:42:09management trying to find some time where I just take all the
- 1:42:12stuff that makes sense and just kind of put it out.
- 1:42:15And I keep telling myself I'm going to do it and it just keeps
- 1:42:17piling up and it doesn't get done.
- 1:42:19But yeah, the outside of paradise slaves, there's a
- 1:42:23couple of things that I've been messing around around with.
- 1:42:24That kind of a thing, I can tell you about it.
- 1:42:27A kind of a thing like not a rock opera, because I know if it
- 1:42:30sounds so silly. And once again, everyone's going
- 1:42:32to start feeling bad for this poor man that lives with this
- 1:42:34cat and his kitchen and he's writing rock operas.
- 1:42:37Okay, this was a Covic thing also.
- 1:42:39This is one of the things I always wanted to do, but
- 1:42:41nonetheless, just like, you know how it is like you got a vast
- 1:42:44ray of all this backlog stuff that you just haven't really put
- 1:42:48out in the world. And you know, when you lose
- 1:42:50friends and you know people are passing away, there's a part of
- 1:42:53you that goes, what are you fucking waiting for?
- 1:42:55Just do it. Just just do it.
- 1:42:56Even even if people go, this is the worst thing I've ever heard
- 1:42:58in my entire life. At least you put it out there
- 1:43:00and you got, you know, the opportunity to for people to
- 1:43:02listen to it. And the greatest part about that
- 1:43:04is whenever I'm messing around with music or whatever, I'm
- 1:43:07like, this could work for a paradise slave song or this.
- 1:43:09And I make all those notations and just kind of aggregate all
- 1:43:12that stuff. But as far as output is
- 1:43:14concerned, that's my, that's my concentration, you know,
- 1:43:16getting, getting, coming back to the plate because these guys are
- 1:43:20already, you know, a couple of songs in some really cool
- 1:43:22sounding shit, like some really awesome sounding stuff.
- 1:43:25So just kind of my next steps are, you know, at the very least
- 1:43:30trying to put forth some music for them so they can actually go
- 1:43:33like, OK, all right. You know, this is this is as
- 1:43:36good as the stuff that we're putting together.
- 1:43:38So, you know, you're not out of the band.
- 1:43:40That kind of a thing. Yeah, dude, just living the
- 1:43:42dream, you know, watching my cat chase a laser beam.
- 1:43:44You know how it is. And there you have it, paradise
- 1:43:48slaves. John and Ryan guys, it's been a
- 1:43:51pleasure. Thank you guys so much for your
- 1:43:53over generous time. You too man, thanks for having
- 1:43:55us. Damn man, I will look forward to
- 1:43:58seeing you guys in person in June.
- 1:44:01June 7th, man. We're going to pull you up
- 1:44:04there. We're going to pull you up
- 1:44:05there, man. Yeah.
- 1:44:06And then record comes out May 2nd on Got it Spine Farm
- 1:44:12Records. Fine farm, yes, got it.
- 1:44:14You got it. Gentlemen, enjoy the rest of
- 1:44:16your night. You.
- 1:44:17Too, man. All right.
- 1:44:19Cheers guys. Take care.
