Ep. 206. Who is Night Thrasher in Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:11
Hi guys, it's Megan for Vigilante vibes and I'm here
• 0:13
with another character breakdown and I was asked to make this
• 0:18
video by a very lovely member and I've said I would so here I
• 0:22
am. So we're going to talk about
• 0:24
Knight Thrasher. Who is Knight Thrasher?
• 0:26
Well it's a very underrated character in my opinion and I
• 0:29
feel like more people should be talking about him.
• 0:31
So Knight Thrasher first appeared in Thor #411 and was
• 0:35
created by Tom Difalco and Ron Friends.
• 0:39
Dwayne Taylor, who is Knight Thrasher, was the son of Daryl
• 0:44
and Melody Taylor. His father served in a military
• 0:47
unit during the Siankong War, where the team uncovered a
• 0:51
hidden place known as the Temple of the Dragon's Breath.
• 0:54
Inside the temple, a power sorceress named Tai demanded
• 0:59
that the soldiers enter a pact. They were to sleep with their
• 1:02
with her daughters and hand over any magically empowered children
• 1:06
born to from those unions so she could use them for her own dark
• 1:10
plans. Which this whole thing is dark,
• 1:12
so I mean Darryl refused outright.
• 1:16
He already had a wife back home. So we love a good man.
• 1:20
His commanding officer Andrew Cord and the rest of the
• 1:23
soldiers accepted the pack. We do not love those men.
• 1:28
  Ty never forgot Darryl's refusal.
• 1:30
Years later, she took revenge by mentally controlling Andrew Cord
• 1:34
and forcing him to off Darryl and Melody right in front of
• 1:39
their son. Afterward, Ty personally altered
• 1:43
Dwayne's mind, clouding his memories so he remembered his
• 1:46
parents dying, but not who actually killed them.
• 1:50
Ty and Andrew Cord then became Dwayne's guardians.
• 1:53
They carefully shaped his anger and grief, encouraging him to
• 1:58
channel it into becoming a living weapon against crime.
• 2:02
While they quietly ran the day-to-day operations of
• 2:05
Darrell's company, the Taylor Foundation, Dwayne focused on
• 2:10
relentless training as an uncostumed St. vigilante known
• 2:14
as Night Thrasher. He crossed paths with two other
• 2:18
fighters, Midnight, Midnight's Fire and Silhouette, who were
• 2:21
also trying to shut down gang activity in their neighborhood.
• 2:25
None of them knew at the time that Fire and Silhouette were
• 2:28
actually long lost children of the Pact born to Andrew Cord and
• 2:32
Ty's daughter Miami. The three teamed up for several
• 2:35
weeks and during that time Dwayne and Silhouette started a
• 2:38
relationship, which feels weird. Things went wrong during a drug
• 2:43
deal where Silhouette was posing as a mule.
• 2:47
A street cop stumbled into a scene and drew his gun.
• 2:51
Midnight's Fire pulled out a blade and Dwayne thought he was
• 2:54
about to kill a cop. As the two struggled, one of the
• 2:57
drug runners drew his own weapon and shot Silhouette in the
• 3:01
  spine. Midnight's Fire completely lost
• 3:03
it and blamed Dwayne for everything.
• 3:06
He slashed Dwayne across the face and walked away, completely
• 3:10
ending their friendship. Dwayne didn't even know if
• 3:14
Silhouette was alive. After Shaken, he asked Cord to
• 3:18
help him build a suit of armor capable of handling superhuman
• 3:22
threats like Midnight's Fire. Thinking back to how effective
• 3:26
he'd been working with Fire and Silhouette, Knight Thrasher
• 3:30
decided to form a team of his own.
• 3:32
He brought together 6 teenage heroes and called them the New
• 3:35
Warriors, young people who trying to figure out who they
• 3:38
were and what they stood for. Dwayne, however, often clashed
• 3:42
with a team because of his extreme no compromise approach
• 3:46
to crime. He eventually crossed paths with
• 3:49
Silhouette again and learned that she had survived the
• 3:52
shooting, though she was permanently paralyzed from the
• 3:55
waist down. When the team's morals got in
• 3:58
the way of uncovering the truth about his past, Dwayne angrily
• 4:01
disbanded the Warriors and went searching for answers on his
• 4:05
own. But he didn't realize that Ty
• 4:07
and Cord had encouraged him to form the team because they
• 4:10
intended to use the Warriors as replacements for the six
• 4:14
children of the Pact. The original kids that had to
• 4:17
  sleep with the daughters. Sacrifice.
• 4:20
And they were sacrifices for, well, of all things.
• 4:24
That's something that kills me about Marvel is the name of
• 4:26
their entities, Well, of all things, the Oblivion.
• 4:30
All that. At the same time, four of the
• 4:34
five surviving offspring, Midnight's Fire, Smiling Tiger,
• 4:38
Blood Strike, and Silk Fever, all Bang up names, were gathered
• 4:44
together by Diego Casus, also known as the Left Hand, another
• 4:49
member of Darryl's old unit. Diego had altered Ty's plans by
• 4:53
stealing her daughter's powers and formed the group into the
• 4:56
Folding Circle. He even convinced Dwayne to join
• 5:00
them, promising answers about his past.
• 5:03
In truth, Diego planned to kill Ty and sacrifice the Warriors to
• 5:07
take the power for himself. The plan failed, but the Folding
• 5:11
Circle would later clash with Dwayne again.
• 5:14
Dwayne in particular never forgave Midnight's Fire for
• 5:17
  betraying his own sister Silhouette.
• 5:20
Later, Dwayne befriended Elvin Halliday, whose rage after Elvin
• 5:26
was kicked off The Avengers for being way too young.
• 5:29
Dwayne saw a lot of himself in the angry young man who just
• 5:32
wanted to fix what was wrong. When Elvin's grandmother was
• 5:36
killed by the Poison Memories Gang, Dwayne became his legal
• 5:39
guardian. Even after returning to the New
• 5:43
Warriors, Dwayne walked away again with when their ethics
• 5:47
conflicted with his own. This time, the fallout was
• 5:50
devastating. While Dwayne and Rage pursued
• 5:54
their own mission, Namarita was abducted and kept under mind
• 5:58
control for months. When the truth came out, the
• 6:01
team voted Dwayne out. After being kicked off the
• 6:05
Warriors, Dwayne brought together Sionics, former enemies
• 6:09
of the team, and tried to turn them into heroes.
• 6:12
While they genuinely wanted to help people, they were way too
• 6:15
unstable and violent to work as a team.
• 6:18
Eventually, Dwayne gave up on Sinex and rejoined the New
• 6:21
Warriors, leaving Sinex ultimate fate unknown.
• 6:26
Dwayne later officially retired from being a hero, though he
• 6:29
stayed semi active while running the Taylor Foundation.
• 6:34
He tried to make a difference through science and rather than
• 6:37
fists, throwing himself into Cancer Research.
• 6:41
One of the scientists appeared to develop a cure, but it was
• 6:43
later revealed that the real breakthrough came from the
• 6:46
scientist mutant Son who had subconsciously guided the cure
• 6:50
using his own power. The revelation destroyed the
• 6:54
foundation's credibility. The scientist later took his own
• 6:58
life trying to prove the cure worked, and Dwayne adopted the
• 7:01
boy. So he's just going around
• 7:03
adopting kids like Infinity Stones who later became known as
• 7:08
Microbe. Wanting to bring the Warriors
• 7:11
back together, Dwayne partnered with ATV Production Company,
• 7:15
turning their missions into a reality show.
• 7:17
He reassembled the team, added Microbe and sent them travelling
• 7:21
across the country hunting super villains hiding in small towns.
• 7:26
During one of the televised missions in Stamford, CT, the
• 7:29
New Warriors confronted Nitro, Coldheart, Speedfreak, and
• 7:33
Cobalt Man Night Thrasher fought Coldheart alongside Namarita and
• 7:40
watched as she tried to stop Nitro from escaping.
• 7:44
When she slammed Nitro into a school bus, he triggered his
• 7:47
powers, causing a massive explosion that killed nearly
• 7:50
everyone in the area, including all of the New Warriors except
• 7:54
Speedball. After the Civil War, a new group
• 7:59
calling themselves the New Warriors appeared, recruiting
• 8:01
underground, depowered and unregistered heroes who opposed
• 8:05
the Superhuman Registration Act. At first, people believe Night
• 8:09
Thrasher had somehow survived, but it was later revealed that
• 8:13
this was actually his half brother Danielle carrying on the
• 8:17
  legacy. After the team disbanded,
• 8:20
Danielle joined another incarnation reminiscent of the
• 8:24
original Warriors and continued opposing the initiative.
• 8:29
When Norman Osborne took control of the nation's defense systems,
• 8:33
the group helped Tigra and Gauntlet escape capture and
• 8:37
became known as The Avengers Resistance.
• 8:41
During this time, the Hood approached Donielle with an
• 8:44
offer, a cloned body of Dwayne, and a way to restore his soul.
• 8:48
Donielle struggled with the decision, which ultimately came
• 8:51
to a head during the Resistance assault on Camp Hammer.
• 8:55
In reality, Dwayne never died. The Collector pulled him out of
• 8:59
time just moments before Nitro's explosion.
• 9:02
Using iOS 8, iOS 08, Dwayne, then forced to take part in the
• 9:09
Collector's Contest of Champions against the Grandmaster, fought
• 9:13
over the IOSOISO Sphere in the alternate reality known as
• 9:19
Battle Realm. Not long after, the Maestro and
• 9:23
the Punisher plotted a rebellion against their master.
• 9:27
After seizing the ISO Sphere, the Maestro became the God of
• 9:31
Battle Realm and imprisoned the Fighters.
• 9:35
When the Ultimates arrived and investigated the disappearances,
• 9:39
the Maestro sent them home and deliberately sent Night Thrasher
• 9:42
with them instead of White Fox, knowing Dwayne was a problem he
• 9:46
didn't want around. Back on Earth, after Mayor Fisk
• 9:50
and newly reformed Thunderbolts began hunting the Punisher
• 9:53
through New York City, Night Thrasher hid Frank Castle and
• 9:57
convinced him he could not survive alone.
• 10:00
Castle eventually agreed, and Thrasher joined forces with Moon
• 10:03
Knight, Black Widow, Sergeant Cole Alvez, Ghost Rider and the
• 10:07
Punisher in a united strike against Baranzimo.
• 10:11
So that is Night Thrasher. He doesn't get talked about a
• 10:14
lot. His story is dark, which I
• 10:16
really like, and I'd really like to see them bring him back into
• 10:20
the mix. I mean, he has nothing going on.
• 10:23
Why not? So, yeah, I hope you learned
• 10:25
something today. I hope you enjoyed Night
• 10:28
Thrasher and I hope that you will like and subscribe so you
• 10:32
don't miss anything else I put out.
• 10:33
With that being said, have a marvelous day.
