- 0:56Speaker 2: Welcome, It is UH Radio Live. It has traveled Tuesday,
- 1:01Speaker 2: and here in New York we are muddling our way
- 1:05Speaker 2: through a kind of rainy, stormy week.
- 1:07Speaker 3: I don't know about this.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I don't like it. Linda. Maybe you need to go
- 1:12Speaker 2: back to Italy or something, because whatever whatever this jump
- 1:15Speaker 2: is now, it's like, don't bring this home.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Oh it's horrible.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Second day, and not in a row, but second day
- 1:22Speaker 4: that's like this, you know, Kevin weather phenomenon. I was
- 1:26Speaker 4: just thinking about this this morning, the fact that yesterday
- 1:30Speaker 4: was the most glorious day. It was perfect, and when
- 1:34Speaker 4: I went to bed, it was a crystal clear night
- 1:37Speaker 4: watching the Yankees see in the stadium that you always
- 1:40Speaker 4: get us. You can always tell what the weather's like
- 1:42Speaker 4: when you're at the stadium and even on TV, right, gorgeous,
- 1:45Speaker 4: pink skies, beautiful, and then you wake up to this.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Like when does this transition happen? When does this?
- 1:52Speaker 2: Oh? Is the stuff rolls across? And you know, before
- 1:55Speaker 2: this we had Canada's lovely oh yeah, wildfire smoke, And
- 1:59Speaker 2: it's it's one thousand percent their own fault because they
- 2:02Speaker 2: don't clear their They've got they've got a bunch of
- 2:05Speaker 2: green wackos up there that don't clear brush in their
- 2:08Speaker 2: in their in their forests. And so you when when
- 2:11Speaker 2: a fire breaks out, it gets really bad because it's
- 2:13Speaker 2: got a lot of fuel to burn, and it's got
- 2:15Speaker 2: a lot of stuff that it can throw up in
- 2:16Speaker 2: the air. Same problem that California has. All the all
- 2:19Speaker 2: the environmental greenies won't let them burn the underbrush off
- 2:23Speaker 2: and keep it, keep the forest nice. Poor guys playing
- 2:27Speaker 2: soccer and stuff. I was like, I am they actually
- 2:29Speaker 2: had a really nice day for the Sunday game, but
- 2:31Speaker 2: it was, oh my god, I was worried into it.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Yeah, but you know what, Listen, I don't feel bad
- 2:37Speaker 4: for them. I'm sorry, Kevin.
- 2:39Speaker 2: I just well, let me ask you about that. So
- 2:41Speaker 2: we had this whole month of these teams coming in
- 2:44Speaker 2: and they they went from seed to Shining Sea. They
- 2:46Speaker 2: played in LA, they played in the Northwest, they played
- 2:49Speaker 2: in Miami, they played here in the Northeast, and I
- 2:53Speaker 2: almost wish I could have put a bunch of American
- 2:55Speaker 2: politicians on the buses with them and let them go
- 2:57Speaker 2: around and see the country through. There is the way
- 3:00Speaker 2: they saw it. Because these guys were fans of America.
- 3:04Speaker 2: They come in and they go this place is awesome.
- 3:07Speaker 2: This isn't like what we do.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Well too. I mean, listen, let's face facts. They were
- 3:15Speaker 3: treated like royalty.
- 3:16Speaker 4: So where I live in Morris County, in Madison, we
- 3:21Speaker 4: were a hub for their practice arenas in Red Bull
- 3:26Speaker 4: right here in Marstown. They used another practice facility in Whippany,
- 3:29Speaker 4: which is ten minutes for me. Then the Argentinian team
- 3:34Speaker 4: stayed at the Short Hills Hilton, which is another ten
- 3:36Speaker 4: minutes from here, so we had a lot of activity
- 3:39Speaker 4: going on, and they were celebritized. I mean it was
- 3:42Speaker 4: like the Beatles in nineteen sixty four.
- 3:45Speaker 3: What was the invasion of baking in.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Every country they hold the World Cup in?
- 3:49Speaker 4: I guess so, I mean, I listen. I'm not a
- 3:52Speaker 4: soccer fan, so I didn't feel it. I could see it,
- 3:56Speaker 4: and I could see the magnitude of emotion that it
- 3:59Speaker 4: brought to a lot of these fans, which I think
- 4:01Speaker 4: is very cool.
- 4:02Speaker 3: The one thing I have.
- 4:03Speaker 4: To say is to tag onto what you're saying. These
- 4:08Speaker 4: guys were so here. I mean they were shopping at
- 4:11Speaker 4: the Short Hills Mall.
- 4:12Speaker 5: They went to BUCkies, but ps gracious, these fans were
- 4:20Speaker 5: stopping them, the young fans, especially that you know.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Waiting outside hotels at the mall, cornering these guys while
- 4:26Speaker 3: they were shopping at the.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Mall, and they were nice and gracious, and I thought
- 4:32Speaker 4: that that was If that was any take home message
- 4:35Speaker 4: for other athletes is to see that because these kids
- 4:40Speaker 4: are looking at.
- 4:41Speaker 3: You like your God and you are God to them.
- 4:44Speaker 4: They all want to be professional athletes, and they you know,
- 4:48Speaker 4: giving them twenty seconds of your time to sign something
- 4:52Speaker 4: or to take a selfie is just to me.
- 4:56Speaker 3: There it was.
- 4:57Speaker 4: That was the lesson. That's what I learned from having
- 5:00Speaker 4: them here. Not about soccer. I don't care about soccer,
- 5:02Speaker 4: and I'm not a soccer guy.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I've never been. We did watch the final game just
- 5:08Speaker 2: because Messi was in it, and.
- 5:10Speaker 3: My kids picked up.
- 5:11Speaker 2: On Messy a little bit, so we'd kind of watched that,
- 5:14Speaker 2: but you know, it was boring, like it was. It
- 5:16Speaker 2: was scoreless for the whole regular game, and then they
- 5:19Speaker 2: went into extra time and they did. They didn't score
- 5:21Speaker 2: the winning goal until like into the extra extra time.
- 5:25Speaker 2: But at the end of it, I'm looking back over
- 5:28Speaker 2: the whole month. I mean, you had these really and
- 5:32Speaker 2: people don't understand in America truly how big of stars
- 5:36Speaker 2: these guys are because every every Messy that's on one
- 5:39Speaker 2: of their teams is the equivalent of like Michael Jordan
- 5:42Speaker 2: and their country back home.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Right, Well, they are.
- 5:45Speaker 2: You mentioned God, they are. They are. They are worshiped
- 5:48Speaker 2: because they don't follow football or baseball or you know,
- 5:51Speaker 2: any of that stuff.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Well, I was just going to say to them in
- 5:54Speaker 4: the in the United States, because we're spoiled brats, right,
- 5:57Speaker 4: we have way too much of everything.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Baseball is baseball.
- 6:01Speaker 4: That's during the summertime once baseball, and oh you become
- 6:05Speaker 4: a basketball fan because that's the fall winter sport.
- 6:08Speaker 3: And oh do you still love soccer? We got soccer
- 6:11Speaker 3: for you too.
- 6:12Speaker 4: We've got sports going on all your The Europeans do
- 6:16Speaker 4: not have South America and.
- 6:18Speaker 2: The Middle East. Yeah, they're all it's all the same.
- 6:20Speaker 3: It's all soccer.
- 6:21Speaker 2: The point I was going to make was is that
- 6:24Speaker 2: they go so they they're fascinated, and they've been told,
- 6:27Speaker 2: largely by a lot of their governments, US is bad.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Everything's bad. You know, this is a terrible country. So
- 6:35Speaker 2: what do they do. They come over here, they see
- 6:38Speaker 2: that people are thriving, that it's not like a terrible place.
- 6:42Speaker 2: And then they go to places like Walmart and they
- 6:45Speaker 2: see massive amounts of goods like at Lolo Prices. And
- 6:51Speaker 2: I think I think the funniest thing was Earling whatever
- 6:56Speaker 2: his name was from from the Norwegian team. He gets
- 6:59Speaker 2: off the plane when they land back in Norway and
- 7:01Speaker 2: he has his five thousand dollars Louis Vuton carry on
- 7:05Speaker 2: in one hand and in the other hand he's got
- 7:08Speaker 2: his his stuffed raccoon from BUCkies, holding the bottle of
- 7:14Speaker 2: Tennessee in the other and he gets off the plane
- 7:18Speaker 2: and he's holding them both up like they're the same thing. Now,
- 7:20Speaker 2: that thing costs, you know, maybe maybe fifty bucks had BUCkies.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I don't know what the cost for that raccoon was.
- 7:25Speaker 3: It was Bucky. I don't think there's anything fifty dollars
- 7:28Speaker 3: at Bucky.
- 7:29Speaker 2: But yeah, maybe not. But he's got the Louis Vuitton
- 7:31Speaker 2: and he's got the raccoon, and it was like he
- 7:34Speaker 2: had been to like paradise, you know, and he's coming home.
- 7:39Speaker 2: And that's what That's what Americans don't have. We don't
- 7:43Speaker 2: have an appreciation for what we experience here or race
- 7:48Speaker 2: our life is. And I'm just done with these insufferable complainers.
- 7:55Speaker 2: You had people that were from legitimately socialist country trees
- 8:00Speaker 2: that came over here and were like, I can't believe
- 8:02Speaker 2: how much everybody in America has when they're in a
- 8:06Speaker 2: socialist program back home, and nobody has anything. Even even
- 8:10Speaker 2: if you're ly well off, you don't have anything, but
- 8:12Speaker 2: the poor certainly don't. And they see that our poor
- 8:15Speaker 2: have Jordan's cell phone.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and you're right, so here's go ahead, Kathy.
- 8:22Speaker 2: But but I felt like it was a great big
- 8:24Speaker 2: PR tour for America, like for Americans to see America
- 8:29Speaker 2: through non American eyes like that on the global stage.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I think was really beneficial for a lot of Americans
- 8:34Speaker 2: because we're like, huh, I guess we do have it
- 8:36Speaker 2: pretty well well.
- 8:37Speaker 3: We're spoiled.
- 8:38Speaker 4: And you know Kevin first, many times as I've been
- 8:40Speaker 4: to Italy, people are like, are you ready to move there?
- 8:43Speaker 3: Would you move there? Would you live there?
- 8:45Speaker 4: And I say, you know what, for like three months
- 8:49Speaker 4: out of the year, and then I'd want to come
- 8:52Speaker 4: home because every time I come back, especially from Europe,
- 8:56Speaker 4: I go I loved where I was as ASTs right,
- 9:00Speaker 4: even Italy.
- 9:01Speaker 3: I'm not a tourist anymore.
- 9:02Speaker 4: But the convenience is that we have in this country
- 9:05Speaker 4: that you will find nowhere else. You can't live without them,
- 9:09Speaker 4: I hate to say it. Can't live without him, can't
- 9:12Speaker 4: live without Walmart twenty four to seven. You can't live
- 9:15Speaker 4: without Instacart, without door Dash, without going to back.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Oh CBS doesn't have that. We'll try Walgreens.
- 9:20Speaker 4: This is I mean, people don't understand that in other
- 9:23Speaker 4: places in the world, you can't live like this. You
- 9:27Speaker 4: cannot live like this, and you're right, ps we take
- 9:31Speaker 4: it completely for granted, and that breaks my heart because
- 9:36Speaker 4: I'm an American.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And I am well and it was fun and I
- 9:41Speaker 2: hope they all had a great time, and I hope
- 9:43Speaker 2: they go back and tell all their countries how cool
- 9:44Speaker 2: a place America is. She's Linda, I'm Kevin. We're coming
- 9:47Speaker 2: right back.
- 9:53Speaker 1: From New York. It's Radio Night Life with Kevin McCullough.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Welcome back. She's Linda, Kevin, Linda Perillo, Kevin mccauaugh. Glad
- 10:02Speaker 2: to be with you. And you know, it's interesting, Linda,
- 10:05Speaker 2: because we were just talking about World Cup. We had,
- 10:09Speaker 2: you know, the Knicks World Champions, you had World Cup,
- 10:12Speaker 2: You've got the sail Forth event that came into New
- 10:16Speaker 2: York Harbor with the ships from all over the world.
- 10:20Speaker 2: But you you were in Italy when all this is
- 10:21Speaker 2: going on. So like I got to see the Medergo Vespucci,
- 10:25Speaker 2: which is the Italian ship that's called the most beautiful
- 10:29Speaker 2: ship in the world by multiple world leaders have have
- 10:32Speaker 2: dubbed her such. So it's been a big, big year
- 10:37Speaker 2: for especially people in the Tri State area, because we've
- 10:40Speaker 2: had a lot of things happen this summer. But this week,
- 10:43Speaker 2: this last weekend, the biggest movie event that had been
- 10:46Speaker 2: anticipated for a long time coming out is Is finally
- 10:49Speaker 2: in theaters and one of my kids got to go
- 10:52Speaker 2: see it with a buddy of his. And so I
- 10:56Speaker 2: have two I have two boys that are both into
- 10:59Speaker 2: the Greek mythological classics, and so they've and some of
- 11:05Speaker 2: some of it's been study that they've had to do
- 11:07Speaker 2: for school, but some of it is just you know,
- 11:10Speaker 2: they they like the Iliad, they liked the Odyssey. They
- 11:13Speaker 2: they and they have discussions about it. I don't I
- 11:16Speaker 2: remember having to read them for class. I don't. I
- 11:19Speaker 2: don't remember a ton about.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Them, key having to They weren't.
- 11:24Speaker 2: They weren't things that radically changed my life. But for
- 11:26Speaker 2: some people they really make an impact. And uh so
- 11:31Speaker 2: there's there's there's back and forth. It's the movie any good, No,
- 11:34Speaker 2: talk to some groups, terrible, it's worst ever talked to
- 11:37Speaker 2: some groups. Oh, they they based it on the feminist
- 11:39Speaker 2: version of the of the book. And then there's another
- 11:42Speaker 2: group that's like, no, it's actually pretty faithful, but you know,
- 11:46Speaker 2: they it's it's violent, it's gory, it's got some weird
- 11:48Speaker 2: things with the psyclopsis and stuff. So just knowing that
- 11:51Speaker 2: it's Greek myth to begin with is all kind of
- 11:53Speaker 2: one thing. But it does revolve around places that you
- 11:58Speaker 2: and I have both been to but also would still
- 12:02Speaker 2: like to go to. And one of them is what's
- 12:05Speaker 2: the name of the little rock formation outside of a
- 12:07Speaker 2: Malfi where the Lecier news swam the sirens were swimming.
- 12:13Speaker 2: That's that's the island that that Odysseus is supposedly where
- 12:19Speaker 2: he experienced the sirens, and you can and it's actually
- 12:22Speaker 2: got a home on it. I think it's I think
- 12:24Speaker 2: it's just outside of It's not Sorrento, it's not Positano. Uh.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And so like last year when we're there, you know,
- 12:31Speaker 2: of course my two boys start talking about, you know,
- 12:33Speaker 2: was this where Odysseus supposedly saw the sirens and the
- 12:36Speaker 2: and the captain of our boat who had us out
- 12:38Speaker 2: that day, he's like, oh, yes, this is the very
- 12:39Speaker 2: spot they were right over there.
- 12:41Speaker 3: You could say, it's.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Like it was totally going there. But these these little
- 12:47Speaker 2: islands and so Ithaca is the other one that I've
- 12:49Speaker 2: never been to, but I but I think I would
- 12:53Speaker 2: like to go to. And it has all of the
- 12:56Speaker 2: heritage of like Homer's writings, and you know, all of
- 13:00Speaker 2: the stories and stuff there, and like this is one
- 13:02Speaker 2: of those things where if you if the if the
- 13:06Speaker 2: stories or the movies of today do us any service
- 13:09Speaker 2: at all, it's that sometimes they can point us back
- 13:12Speaker 2: to these places where real beauty took place. And Greece
- 13:16Speaker 2: and Italy are loaded with those places.
- 13:19Speaker 4: So let me interrupt you for a second. I was
- 13:21Speaker 4: not incorrect on all of them. They are a group
- 13:25Speaker 4: of islands. It's called le Gali Lee l I g
- 13:29Speaker 4: A l l I.
- 13:30Speaker 3: So I was right.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Copperty is one, uh is one. I mentioned that, all
- 13:36Speaker 4: so Lecosa and then uh Venotine. So there's this whole
- 13:43Speaker 4: little group and that's where I guess they claim that
- 13:47Speaker 4: they saw the sirens.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to He just called this this, these
- 13:55Speaker 2: structures the Legali, but they were.
- 13:57Speaker 4: They were Galilee Gali, right, What did I say.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Lee Golli? But Lee Golli too, So leave the Golli.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Like I know that you're primarily an Italy girl, but
- 14:09Speaker 2: but Greece is something that you would probably.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Well, Sicily has a lot of Greek influence. You know,
- 14:16Speaker 4: we have towns called Siracusa, which is in Greek Greece,
- 14:20Speaker 4: because which is in Sicily, which is Syracuse, right, we
- 14:25Speaker 4: have all these different influence that does come from the Greeks.
- 14:30Speaker 3: And the Greeks are very close to the Italians.
- 14:32Speaker 4: I mean that Mediterranean is so close, so close in culture,
- 14:38Speaker 4: in warmth, in food, even it's the very just.
- 14:44Speaker 2: You know, at different times, and.
- 14:46Speaker 4: A lot of intermarriage kevin marriage, we call it marriage breeding.
- 14:49Speaker 4: You know, there's a lot of interbreeding among the Mediterraneans
- 14:52Speaker 4: at that time too. So that's why the influence. And
- 14:55Speaker 4: remember something I tell people this all the time. When
- 14:58Speaker 4: you get to the bottom of Italy and especially Sicily,
- 15:01Speaker 4: and you have all those uh entryways, right, because Italy
- 15:06Speaker 4: is a peninsula more so than you do up with
- 15:09Speaker 4: the North.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but grow from Africa too.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Well.
- 15:13Speaker 4: I was just gonna say, Sicily has a lot of
- 15:15Speaker 4: influence also from.
- 15:17Speaker 3: The African countries like Egypt. That's why they're dark.
- 15:21Speaker 4: That's why Sicilians are dark, I mean, because they do
- 15:24Speaker 4: have that. And it's listen, it's just it's the way
- 15:27Speaker 4: it happened, it's the way the world. It's they traveled
- 15:30Speaker 4: and they did whatever they did and had children.
- 15:32Speaker 2: And so why is the so is the is the
- 15:36Speaker 2: debate about Italians not being Sicilian and Sicilians not being Italian.
- 15:41Speaker 3: It's the other way around.
- 15:42Speaker 4: It's the Sicilians not being Italian because the Italians, you know, listen,
- 15:47Speaker 4: they're just their pain in the butt because they are like,
- 15:50Speaker 4: you know what, anybody that's that was disconnected from the
- 15:54Speaker 4: mainland doesn't count, right, So they don't like the fact
- 15:59Speaker 4: that the Sicilians think that they're Italian. It's really kind
- 16:02Speaker 4: of retort. I mean, it's just kind of silly. I mean,
- 16:05Speaker 4: because they are.
- 16:06Speaker 2: But if you look at the history of Italy, like
- 16:08Speaker 2: they became a nation after the United States.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Did, Yes, they did.
- 16:13Speaker 2: You just had all these on paper, You just had
- 16:16Speaker 2: all these regions that and they largely spoke different languages,
- 16:20Speaker 2: you know, That's why I.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Have all the dialects, so many dialects.
- 16:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Right, So what was considered to be the true Italian heritage,
- 16:29Speaker 2: the Roman heritage from handed down from the Roman Empire.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Well, that's probably what they're going to say, right, I mean,
- 16:35Speaker 4: I think that's their strongest argument, is the Roman Empire
- 16:39Speaker 4: was the beginning.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Was the seed.
- 16:41Speaker 4: What do we say, it's the cradle of civilization. The
- 16:43Speaker 4: Roman Empire is a cradle of civilization. So it was
- 16:46Speaker 4: supposed to have blossomed into everything else. Now if you
- 16:49Speaker 4: go to Rome, I don't know if you noticed this.
- 16:51Speaker 4: So outside the Colisseum where I got kicked out of
- 16:53Speaker 4: the Colisseum on the side.
- 16:56Speaker 2: You wouldn't put your ear set in.
- 16:59Speaker 4: No, right, didn't have it, not that such a rebel,
- 17:01Speaker 4: it is such a rebel.
- 17:05Speaker 3: I didn't even have it.
- 17:06Speaker 4: But there are I think four or five different maps
- 17:10Speaker 4: that Mussolini put up on the side of the one
- 17:15Speaker 4: of the side buildings of the coliseum.
- 17:17Speaker 3: And it shows you the beginning of what was the.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Roman Empire to what the Roman Empire ended up being
- 17:25Speaker 4: right when they did unify, and it's very interesting to
- 17:29Speaker 4: see where it goes.
- 17:30Speaker 3: It goes, it goes, but it always had its core
- 17:34Speaker 3: in Rome, and that was that was it. I don't
- 17:37Speaker 3: think you could ever ever argue that.
- 17:40Speaker 4: I mean, Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire, they were all part
- 17:43Speaker 4: of each other.
- 17:44Speaker 3: And then the Romans just they took over.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Well, and it makes sense that it made sense that
- 17:49Speaker 2: ultimately Italy was the peninsula and the islands attached to it,
- 17:53Speaker 2: because that that makes the most sense geographically speaking. But
- 17:57Speaker 2: you know, you see such a different culture from Venice
- 17:59Speaker 2: down the seat like it is is just a world
- 18:02Speaker 2: of difference. Yeah, so anyway I did. I would like
- 18:05Speaker 2: to go to Ithaca at some point. I would like
- 18:07Speaker 2: to go to Athens at some point. There's there's some
- 18:10Speaker 2: more biblical sits I want to see in some of
- 18:12Speaker 2: those places. But yeah, a lot of people are looking
- 18:14Speaker 2: at the Odyssey, going, hey, I want to go. I
- 18:16Speaker 2: want to go check out where the where the Athenians
- 18:19Speaker 2: were from and where the Trojan horse was.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Built on that beautiful country, absolutely beautiful. Perillo Tours is
- 18:24Speaker 4: doing Greece just f y.
- 18:26Speaker 2: I you know, your brother doesn't pay you enough to
- 18:29Speaker 2: do all the free pub Seriously, you should see.
- 18:31Speaker 3: You should say, Steve got anything?
- 18:33Speaker 2: Well, there you go, so but you should say, Steve,
- 18:36Speaker 2: look every time I mention it, you're gonna you're gonna
- 18:38Speaker 2: owe me a hundred bucks and just you know, just
- 18:40Speaker 2: make him pay.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Maybe that's the way to do it, Kevin.
- 18:43Speaker 4: We're going to try that.
- 18:45Speaker 2: She's loved I'm Kevin. We got much more straight ahead.
- 18:54Speaker 1: And now I'm from New York back to radio night life.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Here're Kevin McCullough.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Welcome back, Kevin McCullough. It's Tuesday night, It's travel Tuesday.
- 19:05Speaker 2: We're grateful to have you with us. Thank you for
- 19:07Speaker 2: being here. Linda Parrillo is my co host on Tuesdays,
- 19:11Speaker 2: and we have a great time talking about kind of
- 19:13Speaker 2: global destinations and everything else. If you would like to
- 19:16Speaker 2: read some of our thoughts, and I'm hoping that my
- 19:19Speaker 2: co host will submit at least a piece or two
- 19:21Speaker 2: from her to recent trip to Italy and how amazing
- 19:24Speaker 2: some of the things were that she experienced, because I
- 19:26Speaker 2: would love for our readers to know more about. Okay,
- 19:29Speaker 2: but anyway, so while you were gone, you know, there
- 19:33Speaker 2: was this little thing called Iran that was still going on. Yeah,
- 19:36Speaker 2: and I'm curious in your in and out because Iran's
- 19:40Speaker 2: not super far from that portion of Europe. What did
- 19:44Speaker 2: you see anything different? We're security procedures in any way
- 19:49Speaker 2: impacted by what's going on over there at all.
- 19:51Speaker 4: No, I didn't notice anything, And as a matter of fact,
- 19:55Speaker 4: when I came home, I'm like, wait a minute, what happened.
- 19:58Speaker 3: I thought we were.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Doing so well here and then you know, you say
- 20:02Speaker 4: to yourself, well, yeah.
- 20:03Speaker 3: But look who we're dealing with.
- 20:05Speaker 4: I mean really, I mean, do we really count on
- 20:07Speaker 4: them to be stellar and uphold there, ender the bargain
- 20:10Speaker 4: and do this piece.
- 20:13Speaker 3: You know, I mean I think we tried.
- 20:15Speaker 4: And so the ps to this whole thing is, whenever
- 20:20Speaker 4: there's tension anywhere in the world, it doesn't.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Matter where you are an American.
- 20:26Speaker 4: I hate to say this, but you have to be prudent, right,
- 20:31Speaker 4: you're a target. You're a target because whatever Americans do
- 20:36Speaker 4: ends up in the forefront of everything, Right, we end
- 20:39Speaker 4: up it's the broadcast, it's the top news story. Anytime
- 20:43Speaker 4: we're having any kind of relationship with any other country,
- 20:47Speaker 4: we get spoken about because we're the big cheese. And
- 20:49Speaker 4: that's just the way it goes. So listen, it's nothing new, Kevin.
- 20:53Speaker 4: Since the beginning of time. Americans be cautious when you travel,
- 20:58Speaker 4: especially nowhere. Your embassy is at all times in every
- 21:02Speaker 4: city that you're visiting.
- 21:04Speaker 3: That is your haven, you know, So either you're going
- 21:09Speaker 3: to stay at home and not.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Go anywhere just because you're an American, or you're going
- 21:13Speaker 4: to go out there, and you're going to be aware,
- 21:15Speaker 4: be very cautious.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Of where you're going, what you're doing.
- 21:18Speaker 4: Would I tell somebody, g go to Israel today and
- 21:21Speaker 4: travel to the Middle East?
- 21:23Speaker 6: No?
- 21:23Speaker 4: Yeah, get on a plane and go to Italy?
- 21:27Speaker 3: Why not? Yeah?
- 21:28Speaker 4: But again, be smart about what's happening, because you will
- 21:33Speaker 4: forever be a target as a US citizen.
- 21:36Speaker 2: And that brings me to the question and the reason
- 21:38Speaker 2: we're talking about this friends, by the way, is the
- 21:39Speaker 2: US Department did issue today a worldwide cautionary advisory for
- 21:43Speaker 2: American citizens because of the redevelopment of hostilities with Iran.
- 21:49Speaker 2: And today when I was up very early this morning,
- 21:53Speaker 2: evidently Yemen and the Houties are threatening to do to
- 21:57Speaker 2: the Red Sea what Iran's trying to do to the
- 22:00Speaker 2: Strait of Horror moves. They're all going to be like,
- 22:04Speaker 2: really sad when when all of the pipelines are finally
- 22:08Speaker 2: online and we don't have to ship oil through ships anymore,
- 22:10Speaker 2: because that's going to change that equation big time. But
- 22:14Speaker 2: I want to go back to what you were talking about,
- 22:16Speaker 2: because I've realized that the more American you seem, especially
- 22:22Speaker 2: on foreign soil, I sense the difference in terms of
- 22:26Speaker 2: how people watch and look and react and usually it's
- 22:31Speaker 2: it's good, but it's so easy to spot us in
- 22:34Speaker 2: some of these places, some of these some of these
- 22:37Speaker 2: countries that have had like almost zero immigration security in
- 22:44Speaker 2: terms of the last few years. Have you have people
- 22:47Speaker 2: in some of these places that kind of blend in
- 22:49Speaker 2: easier than the Americans do, And so you kind of
- 22:53Speaker 2: do stand out where you're in a place. And I purposefully,
- 22:57Speaker 2: when we went to Italy last year, I purposely bought
- 23:00Speaker 2: some clothes ahead of time to kind of look like
- 23:02Speaker 2: I was just more more authentic Italian, just to kind of.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Just McCullough, yeah, so Italian.
- 23:10Speaker 2: But I don't think it really helps because I don't
- 23:11Speaker 2: think I can make myself look like I'm an Italian.
- 23:14Speaker 2: But I was conscious. I was conscious of it, which
- 23:18Speaker 2: is not something I've been in the past. And I
- 23:20Speaker 2: think that's the difference. It's like now something that.
- 23:22Speaker 4: I think about, Well, you know, the Americans, I always say,
- 23:26Speaker 4: we look like remember that proverbial Like if someone ever
- 23:28Speaker 4: showed you a picture of a tourist, the proverbial tourist.
- 23:31Speaker 3: With like the hat on and the big camera in
- 23:34Speaker 3: front of.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Yah's Clark Griswald and vacation too.
- 23:37Speaker 3: That's what the profile of the American tourist.
- 23:40Speaker 4: And I have to say, we don't really waiver like
- 23:44Speaker 4: we kind of do look like that. And I have
- 23:48Speaker 4: to say this too, you know, I always try before
- 23:50Speaker 4: I go to Italy. I really try to say I'm
- 23:53Speaker 4: bringing you know, listen, I'm a close a fictionado anyway,
- 23:57Speaker 4: but I.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Bring the best outfits I have.
- 24:00Speaker 4: I try to no matter what happens I get there,
- 24:02Speaker 4: I bought the best outfits. I'm dressed to the nines,
- 24:06Speaker 4: and I still don't look like an Italian.
- 24:09Speaker 3: I mean, you just can't.
- 24:10Speaker 2: You actually are Italian.
- 24:12Speaker 3: And I am.
- 24:13Speaker 4: And what's available to us here are not the same
- 24:16Speaker 4: things that are available to them there. So you know,
- 24:21Speaker 4: you'll never really not stand out. You could do as
- 24:23Speaker 4: much as you can. But Americans, unfortunately, they.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Have a look. And that's part of it.
- 24:30Speaker 4: I mean, Europeans look like Europeans. A French person could
- 24:33Speaker 4: look like an Italian person.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Right, Park and Company in vacation too, they go and
- 24:37Speaker 2: they buy all their Italian designer clothes and they look
- 24:41Speaker 2: like the funniest thing. Anyway, I'm Kevin, We're coming right
- 24:45Speaker 2: back don't go where.
- 24:53Speaker 3: What a little moonline can do.
- 24:55Speaker 1: It's radio night life. Here's Kevin mccollo.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Welcome back, Calvin McCollough, Chris, Christine Nicholas, No Brong night,
- 25:04Speaker 2: Linda Perillo.
- 25:06Speaker 3: I love Christine.
- 25:08Speaker 2: By the way. Speaking of Christine, she's going to join
- 25:10Speaker 2: us on September first, is it. We're going to be
- 25:15Speaker 2: in in little little Italy, Arthur Avenue up north, are
- 25:20Speaker 2: not down down and not down in Manhattan. We're going
- 25:22Speaker 2: to be in the Bronx at Marios in in Arthur Avenue,
- 25:26Speaker 2: and we're gonna have a lot of people coming over
- 25:28Speaker 2: from all the shops. They're all going to be there,
- 25:30Speaker 2: but we're gonna do uh, it's going to be a
- 25:32Speaker 2: fun night. You're gonna want to be there. Linda and
- 25:35Speaker 2: I are going to do our show, and then Christina
- 25:37Speaker 2: and I are going to do our show, and Linda
- 25:38Speaker 2: is going to be with us on on that show,
- 25:41Speaker 2: and Christine may jump on the Tuesday night show. But
- 25:43Speaker 2: we have a lot of fun talking about a lot
- 25:46Speaker 2: of interesting things. And here's the one thing I did
- 25:48Speaker 2: not ask you about yet on tonight show. Linda and
- 25:50Speaker 2: you were out of town. But and I'm I'm bracing
- 25:54Speaker 2: myself for your response because we've we've we've talked to
- 25:59Speaker 2: a handful of other Italians about this since it happened,
- 26:01Speaker 2: and it's not been nice any of the times. But
- 26:04Speaker 2: the mayor released a map, Oh boy, I'm.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Aware of this.
- 26:12Speaker 2: It did not have any Italian enclaves, it didn't have
- 26:16Speaker 2: the Irish enclave, it had none of the Jewish enclaves
- 26:21Speaker 2: in the five boroughs. And I'm just curious your thoughts,
- 26:25Speaker 2: your family's thoughts, your many extended Italian family's thoughts about
- 26:30Speaker 2: how that was received, because i will tell you that
- 26:33Speaker 2: from business leaders like at Arthur Avenue and in Little Italy,
- 26:38Speaker 2: there were some pretty steamed people saying, what's he trying
- 26:42Speaker 2: to do? Erases from the map?
- 26:44Speaker 3: Right?
- 26:44Speaker 4: Well, this is what I'm going to say to begin
- 26:46Speaker 4: this whole thing, and it's just a very general comment
- 26:48Speaker 4: about him. You know, no kings in America, Mondannie, like
- 26:52Speaker 4: you're doing the same exact thing that you cry about
- 26:56Speaker 4: every day that you broadcast to your liberal city.
- 27:01Speaker 3: How dare you? And now he wants to attack Benjamin.
- 27:06Speaker 2: He.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Wants to arrest him, which he does not have the
- 27:12Speaker 4: But it's very interesting to me that there's parallels to
- 27:16Speaker 4: what he claimed that Donald Trump does and to what.
- 27:19Speaker 3: He wants to do.
- 27:19Speaker 4: Now, you want to annihilate people from a map that
- 27:23Speaker 4: were artisans and workers. And here's the other thing. Come
- 27:27Speaker 4: after me, real immigrants, immigrants who came here with jobs,
- 27:34Speaker 4: with families, with hopes, with dreams, health records, legally, without disease,
- 27:42Speaker 4: without anything. And that's what you want to do. Wow,
- 27:46Speaker 4: talk about Okay Cuckoo. I don't understand him. I don't
- 27:51Speaker 4: understand his followers. It's terrible.
- 27:54Speaker 2: And on that map that I didn't even know existed,
- 27:58Speaker 2: like little Senate, did you know, what do you think
- 28:02Speaker 2: of New York? Do you think of little Senegal?
- 28:04Speaker 3: Like the first thing that comes to mind? You should
- 28:06Speaker 3: play this game. You should go on the street, say,
- 28:08Speaker 3: first thing that comes to mind.
- 28:10Speaker 2: In New York? What do you think of little Synegal? Yeah?
- 28:14Speaker 2: Little yeah, yeah, our little Haiti. But if you're looking
- 28:21Speaker 2: about if you're looking at New York and you're saying, okay,
- 28:23Speaker 2: what communities came to New York and built modern New York?
- 28:28Speaker 2: So and I've watched Eric Burns' New York documentary on PBS,
- 28:33Speaker 2: like maybe twenty five or thirty times and it's twelve
- 28:36Speaker 2: hours long, but it's it is worth the watch. But
- 28:39Speaker 2: you had the Dutch come first, and then you had
- 28:41Speaker 2: the British, and then you had the Revolution and we
- 28:44Speaker 2: were occupied for the whole length of the war, and
- 28:47Speaker 2: then the American colonials broke out. But then you had
- 28:50Speaker 2: the immigration waves that came and the Italians came, and
- 28:54Speaker 2: Jews came, and the Irish came, and those three communities
- 28:59Speaker 2: were really the communities that made modern New York what
- 29:02Speaker 2: it is.
- 29:03Speaker 3: I was just gonna say, we build it.
- 29:05Speaker 7: And they did it peaceful, living next door to each other,
- 29:08Speaker 7: like right, they didn't have problems like the Irish and
- 29:11Speaker 7: the Italians, you know, both well whatever, but like but
- 29:15Speaker 7: they lived with each other and they got it done.
- 29:17Speaker 2: The same thing with Jews. So why are we why
- 29:20Speaker 2: are we like, oh, look at this little Muslim neighborhood
- 29:24Speaker 2: and look at this one, and you're ignoring these massive
- 29:26Speaker 2: communities that basically gave you the city that you now.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Have, because we're not living in the same New York City,
- 29:33Speaker 4: in the same New York City suburbs that we were
- 29:36Speaker 4: living in Kevin when when I grew up and we
- 29:38Speaker 4: had these mayors that realized that.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Guess what, New York City is a melting pot.
- 29:44Speaker 6: And we did respect all of those groups that formed
- 29:49Speaker 6: this city that how about this that built this city,
- 29:53Speaker 6: like I said, the artisans, the people that the masons,
- 29:57Speaker 6: and everyone had a job.
- 29:59Speaker 4: Like you said said the Italians had probably one thing
- 30:02Speaker 4: that they did well. The Irish had another thing that
- 30:05Speaker 4: they did well. And okay, the banter back and forth,
- 30:08Speaker 4: whatever their issue was with each other, they worked in harmony.
- 30:12Speaker 2: When they were on those big skyscraper skeletons. They didn't
- 30:15Speaker 2: care if they were Irish or Italian. That what they
- 30:17Speaker 2: cared about was not can you catch the molten bullet
- 30:20Speaker 2: that's being thrown at you to put into the to
- 30:23Speaker 2: the thing and can you keep your balance? That's what
- 30:25Speaker 2: they cared about when they were up there.
- 30:27Speaker 4: Absolutely, and I think it's it's absolutely heinous and terrible.
- 30:31Speaker 4: And if I ever met him one day, I would
- 30:33Speaker 4: really tell him exactly that.
- 30:36Speaker 2: I have a feeling you you would, I don't.
- 30:38Speaker 3: I would. He's destroying He's destroying that city.
- 30:43Speaker 4: And I hope everyone that voted for him realizes what
- 30:46Speaker 4: he's doing.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Well, there's there's a lot of Italian New Yorkers that
- 30:50Speaker 2: I think have been sufficiently put off by this. We'll see,
- 30:54Speaker 2: all right. She's Lynndam Kevin. We're coming back with.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Perillas one once again from New York. Here's night life
- 31:01Speaker 1: and Kevin McCulla welcome back.
- 31:04Speaker 2: She's Blinda. I'm Kevin. Glad to have you with us,
- 31:06Speaker 2: and please do come out September one. We are going
- 31:10Speaker 2: to be in Arthur Avenue at Marios and you know,
- 31:15Speaker 2: of all of the Italian eateies there, Linda is Marios.
- 31:19Speaker 3: I want to know the best.
- 31:21Speaker 4: Well, yes, And here's the thing. There are many that
- 31:24Speaker 4: have surfaced since it was my father.
- 31:27Speaker 2: There's like seven or eight that have been there for
- 31:28Speaker 2: one hundred years. There's like seven or eight there that
- 31:32Speaker 2: have been there at least one hundred years.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Oh yeah, for sure.
- 31:37Speaker 4: But Mario's was always, you know, Mario's go to, my
- 31:40Speaker 4: dad's go to.
- 31:41Speaker 3: He loved it there. He knew the owner very well,
- 31:44Speaker 3: Joe very well.
- 31:46Speaker 4: So I've known Regina for years and she's hosting and
- 31:49Speaker 4: she's a wonderful girl.
- 31:51Speaker 2: She the first generation from that Mario, I believe.
- 31:54Speaker 3: So yeah, well from Joe who the owner.
- 31:56Speaker 2: So you but you two are on the same level.
- 32:00Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah. So
- 32:03Speaker 4: that's why I always try to focus on Marios and listen.
- 32:07Speaker 4: They are classic Italian American cuisine.
- 32:11Speaker 3: You know inside its ornate and I love all that
- 32:14Speaker 3: stuff and the best.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Spiadini a la romana that you will ever find in
- 32:20Speaker 4: your life. What did you just say, spadini spiadini a
- 32:25Speaker 4: la romana. Spiadini are pieces of fried bread with stuffed
- 32:32Speaker 4: with fresh mozzarella and.
- 32:34Speaker 3: Then deep fried. Oh then on top.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Wait, a lot of people don't love this is an
- 32:40Speaker 4: anchovy sauce.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Oh like, oh my.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Gosh, the best ever.
- 32:46Speaker 4: So Marios is known for their spiadini and again very
- 32:50Speaker 4: classic Italian.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Cooking, and that's what you love about.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Like if I go to the Bronx, I don't want
- 32:59Speaker 4: food fool nouvelle cuisine. I want Dominick's American chicken parm
- 33:06Speaker 4: or something similar from Domini's, right, or go to Marios
- 33:11Speaker 4: and get more upscale Italian American.
- 33:15Speaker 2: What's your favorite what's your favorite form of pasta?
- 33:18Speaker 3: It depends, It really depends on what it is. My
- 33:22Speaker 3: dad loved that, Matrisiana loved it.
- 33:25Speaker 4: I would like, oh you mean you're talking about pasta
- 33:30Speaker 4: shape pasta type.
- 33:31Speaker 3: I love, oh bumbolott.
- 33:33Speaker 4: I love bumbolotti, which are like a very short, fat
- 33:38Speaker 4: tube pasta. That's one of my absolute favorites. I'm not
- 33:42Speaker 4: a big spaghetti girl. But here's the same Kevin that
- 33:46Speaker 4: I'm going to give you. There are certain sauces that
- 33:49Speaker 4: go on certain types of pasta, so not every type
- 33:52Speaker 4: of sauce you're going to put on every type of pasta,
- 33:55Speaker 4: and the Italians are like fanatical about it. There's certain
- 33:59Speaker 4: pastas that are to grip onto a short shortain sauces
- 34:02Speaker 4: onto a short pasta. There are some that are made carbonara.
- 34:07Speaker 4: You would put on a long pasta on a spaghetti
- 34:10Speaker 4: Rightlinguini voonbole sauce, you will put that on linguine amtsana.
- 34:16Speaker 4: You want a short pasta, al rabiata, you want a
- 34:20Speaker 4: short pasta.
- 34:21Speaker 2: So now you now, ladies and gentlemen, now you've had
- 34:24Speaker 2: the shorthand pasta class by Linda Perillo. Tonight to be
- 34:28Speaker 2: continued next time. Linda. Great to see you and can't
- 34:32Speaker 2: wait to sit down and have some spidini with you Soonmana, yeah,
- 34:37Speaker 2: well maybe ala romana. See, I'll see what if I
- 34:40Speaker 2: feel like that night. All right, friends, join us tomorrow,
- 34:43Speaker 2: will be doing wellness. Kevin mccallaugh, glad to have you.
