- 0:02Someone has their astrological chart done, and by that they are
- 0:06able to determine the location of the various planets and the
- 0:10sun and moon and the constellations in relation to
- 0:14their birth. They will learn about the
- 0:17hardships they will face, the major life events they can
- 0:21expect, and the opportunities that lie in front of them.
- 0:26Some people reject the entire concept of astrology, while
- 0:31others treat it as a true relation of their future and
- 0:34take the information they receive from their chart to
- 0:37heart. What is rarely, if ever, taken
- 0:41into account is any role for the individual to make choices that
- 0:45may change the destiny laid out in their chart.
- 0:49The unspoken assumption is that the destiny is fixed and already
- 0:54written, and thus it will occur that way.
- 1:00There is, however, a clear distinction between coincidence
- 1:04and actual causality. The astrological chart may,
- 1:09assuming it properly captures actual astrological influences
- 1:14active in an individual's life, let the individual know what
- 1:18forces are active in his life and what influences will tend to
- 1:23play upon his future destiny. This is more or less like a map
- 1:28which is A2 dimensional representation of a
- 1:31three-dimensional reality in the world.
- 1:34We may be able to chart a route across a map, but when we
- 1:38actually get on the ground to go somewhere, we find that
- 1:43innumerable things that were not actually clear on the map
- 1:46determined changes in the route or the issues to be faced, or
- 1:51the time it takes to accomplish the route we have chosen.
- 1:55Astrology is more of a potential map than an actual causal force
- 2:01in anyone's life. Those who choose to accept
- 2:05determinism as the sole force of development in the life will see
- 2:10astrology as the instrument for describing that predetermined
- 2:13reality. Those who believe in the
- 2:16exercise of free will will tend to reject the importance of
- 2:21astrology and deny its ability to predict their future.
- 2:26Once we acknowledge that there is a truth and a place for both
- 2:30determinism and free will, we will see that while large
- 2:34patterns are laid down through the will of the divine and the
- 2:37creation which impact everyone and everything, and thereby show
- 2:43us the correspondences that astrology reveals, there are
- 2:47also all the details that provide an individual the
- 2:51freedom to modify, adjust, change, or outright reject
- 2:57certain influences, forces, or choices.
- 3:02Shriorobindo writes quote. I just, however, guard against
- 3:07the idea that the signs and planets determine a man's
- 3:10character or fate. They do not.
- 3:13They only indicate it because they are the sensational
- 3:17celestial and astral influences, or nervous force in nature,
- 3:23which becomes the instruments of our karma.
- 3:27That is why the European Mystics gave the name of astral planes
- 3:30to the plane of sensational or nervous existence, and astral
- 3:35fluid to the magnetic power or current of nervous vital force
- 3:40In a man. It is the same vital force which
- 3:44pours upon us from all parts of the solar system and of this
- 3:48physical universe. But man is mightier than his
- 3:52sensations or vitality or the sensational or vital forces of
- 3:58the universe. Our fate and our temperament
- 4:02have been built by our own wills, and our own wills can
- 4:05alter them. End Quote Reference Shriorobindo
