- 1:02God always has a plan for our lives, and God's plan is so much better than anything we could imagine.
- 1:10We may think we have it all figured out, but He is the one who really has it figured out.
- 1:15This truth is one that we need to hold tightly to and pass on to those around us.
- 1:21This truth is one that can build our faith, and it's one that we must be prepared
- 1:25to share with those God places in our lives.
- 1:29Join us in this episode of the Woman at the Whale Ministries podcast as Erica
- 1:34Close teaches from Deuteronomy chapter 6, focusing on verse 23.
- 1:39And he brought us out from thence that he might bring us in to give us the land
- 1:45which he swear unto our fathers.
- 1:47Well, thank you all so much for joining us in this podcast. I am so excited
- 1:52to hop into Deuteronomy chapter 6.
- 1:55If you've been spending the past few Wednesdays with us, you know that we've
- 1:59been looking at the book of Deuteronomy, both to understand what it says and
- 2:04what it teaches us, but at the same time,
- 2:06also to show us how it applies to our lives and how the lessons that the Lord
- 2:10had for the Israelites are lessons that still hold true for us today.
- 2:16So today we are in Deuteronomy chapter 6, and I'm going to open up reading the
- 2:21whole chapter in Deuteronomy 6, verses 1 through 25.
- 2:26Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments which the Lord
- 2:31your God commanded to teach you, that you might do them in the land whither you go to possess it.
- 2:37That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments,
- 2:42which I command thee, thou and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy
- 2:47life, that thy days may be prolonged.
- 2:51Hear, O Israel, and observe to do it, that it may be well with thee,
- 2:55and that ye may mightily increase, as the Lord God of thy fathers has promised
- 3:00thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.
- 3:03Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord, And thou shalt love the Lord thy
- 3:08God with all thine heart and with all thy soul and with all thy might.
- 3:13And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart.
- 3:18And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them
- 3:23when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way,
- 3:26and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
- 3:29And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets
- 3:34between thine eyes. and thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house and on thy gates.
- 3:40And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land
- 3:45which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham,
- 3:49to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities which thou buildest
- 3:54not, and houses full of all good things which thou fillest not,
- 3:58and wells dig which thou diggest not.
- 4:01Vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedest not, when thou shalt have eaten and be full.
- 4:08Then beware, lest thou forget the Lord which brought thee out of the land of
- 4:13Egypt from the house of bondage.
- 4:16Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.
- 4:21You shall not go after other gods of the gods of the people which are around
- 4:25you. For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you, lest the anger of the
- 4:30Lord thy God be kindled against thee and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.
- 4:35You shall not tempt the Lord your God as you tempted him in Massa.
- 4:39You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God and his testimonies
- 4:44and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.
- 4:47And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord,
- 4:53that it may be well with thee and that thou Thou mayest go in and possess the
- 4:57good land which the Lord swear unto thy fathers,
- 5:00to cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the Lord hath spoken.
- 5:05And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean testimonies
- 5:10and the statutes and the judgments which the Lord our God hath commanded you?
- 5:14Then thou shalt say unto thy son.
- 5:17We were Pharaoh's bondsmen in Egypt, and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
- 5:23And the Lord showed signs and wonders great and sore upon Egypt.
- 5:28Upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household before our eyes.
- 5:33And he brought us out from thence that he might bring us in to give us the land
- 5:40which he sware unto our fathers.
- 5:41And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God
- 5:48for our good always, that he might preserve us alive as it is at this day.
- 5:53And it shall be our righteousness if we observe to do all these commandments
- 5:57before the Lord our God as he hath commanded us.
- 6:02When we're in chapter 6 of Deuteronomy, we get to move from all of the nitty-gritty
- 6:08details of God's laws and his commandments, and we get to see God's purpose for his law.
- 6:15In the last chapter of Deuteronomy, we read about how God loves us so much that
- 6:22he wants the very best for us.
- 6:24And he gave us and he gave the Israelites the commandments to pave our paths
- 6:29in such a way that in walking in them, we can receive the blessings that God has for us.
- 6:36Now, when we open up chapter six of Deuteronomy, we open with a very familiar
- 6:41reiteration of God's purpose for his people and for us, his children.
- 6:46God gave the law to his people that by following it, they might attain the land
- 6:52that God had set before them, that they might live long and prosperous lives,
- 6:57and that they might see the increase that the Lord desires for them.
- 7:02The holiness that comes with following God's commands yields great results.
- 7:09It would yield great results for the Israelites, and it yields great results
- 7:15and great rewards for us.
- 7:17As we move along in chapter 6, we come across another of God's purposes for
- 7:23his laws and his commandments.
- 7:25They're to be transferred to the next generation.
- 7:30Now, God isn't just speaking about children here, but to all of those that follow us in the faith.
- 7:37If you're a pastor, you have to transfer God's commandments to your congregation.
- 7:43If you're a teacher, you transfer his commandments to your students.
- 7:47If you're a follower of Christ, you're transferring his commandments to those
- 7:52who are younger in the faith. And as parents, you're transferring that understanding
- 7:58to your children and to your grandchildren.
- 8:01God's commandments are anything but stagnant, and yes, they still apply to us today.
- 8:10God has a purpose for his word, and it's to be written upon our hearts.
- 8:16We've read about how when we know God's commandments, we are to teach them diligently
- 8:22to those that are in our lives.
- 8:25Let's take a look at verse 7 for a moment. And thou shalt teach them diligently
- 8:30unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house,
- 8:35and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down,
- 8:38and when thou risest up. That's Deuteronomy 6, 7.
- 8:44Teaching about God's commandments and God's word is to be by example.
- 8:49And if we read anything in that verse, we read that it's supposed to be a constant in our lives.
- 8:55Each and every moment in our life is
- 8:58what we could call a teaching moment someone is always watching and waiting
- 9:02to see how the child of god is going to react in any given situation it's our
- 9:09job to harness these moments and display the love of god and the teaching of god in all that we do,
- 9:17As we keep moving through Deuteronomy chapter 6, we see another key principle.
- 9:23That's for all believers.
- 9:24When the Lord is in a situation, it will succeed beyond our wildest imaginations
- 9:31and exceed what we deserve.
- 9:34If you go back to verses 10 and 11, you'll see that the Lord was bringing the
- 9:39Israelites in a land filled with houses that they did not build,
- 9:44filled with things that they did not acquire,
- 9:48wells which they did not dig, and vineyards and fields which they did not plant.
- 9:54The Lord had prepared for them a blessing, the promised land,
- 9:59which far exceeded anything they could ever imagine.
- 10:03And when the Israelites arrived in the promised land, they would be walking
- 10:06into a life completely and perfectly prepared for them. What a blessing that is.
- 10:13We can do the same. When we can walk in such a way that the Lord can bless us,
- 10:21we will be blessed far beyond what we can ever expect.
- 10:27As we continue to read in this chapter about God's amazing blessings,
- 10:32we're met with a really strong admonition, something that we really need to listen to.
- 10:40And that is this specific commandment.
- 10:43Don't forget his blessings.
- 10:47God's blessings are meant to be cherished, held, and pondered.
- 10:53Remember how Mary pondered these things in her heart?
- 10:57We read that in Luke 2.19, when she was told the future blessings of Jesus, right?
- 11:03She held onto those things.
- 11:05She pondered them in her heart.
- 11:08Just like that, we need to hold on to the blessings of God.
- 11:13The world around us is going to have us focus on negative circumstances all
- 11:17around us, but our job as believers is to focus on God and what he's done for us and who he is.
- 11:27As we continue to move on in chapter 6, we come to the place where we're reminded
- 11:31that God is a jealous God and that there can be no other gods in our lives that come ahead of him.
- 11:38We're to fear and serve God and keep our focus on him, forsaking the things
- 11:44of the world that those around us run after.
- 11:48God is a jealous God and he's not going to be put in second place.
- 11:53Galatians 5-7 reminds us that we will reap what we sow.
- 11:58There are dreadful consequences for putting the world ahead of God.
- 12:03Just like seeking the world will lead to our destruction, seeking God puts us
- 12:09in the place where we can be blessed.
- 12:12Keeping his commandments and doing that which is right and good in the sight
- 12:16of the Lord is going to lead us to that place of blessing.
- 12:21We can look at 1 Peter 3.15 to bring us into the next portion of Deuteronomy
- 12:276, where we read, Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh
- 12:33you a reason of the hope that is in you.
- 12:37When we live God-pleasing lives and keep the blessings of God firmly held in
- 12:42our memory, we'll always be ready to give an answer about God.
- 12:46Verse 20 of chapter 6 talks about being able to answer for the purposes of God's commandments.
- 12:53When asked, we need to tell people about the times that we've been blessed and
- 12:58the things that God has done in our lives. Being ready to give an answer means
- 13:02to have the praises of God always on the tip of your tongue.
- 13:08As this chapter closes, I want us to focus on a really special verse.
- 13:13As we read about the Lord bringing the Israelites out of Egypt,
- 13:16we come across this verse.
- 13:19And he brought us out from thence that he might bring us in to give us the land
- 13:25which he swear unto our fathers.
- 13:27Listen to that one more time. He brought us out from thence that he might bring us in.
- 13:35So often we don't understand why things happen in our lives.
- 13:39Sometimes it seems that God just removes things from our lives and doesn't replace
- 13:45them. But that's not true.
- 13:48Yes, God moves circumstances around in our lives, but he always provides for us.
- 13:55Often he moves us out of one circumstance to bring us into another.
- 14:00When the Israelites were a mere few days out of Egypt in the desert, they wanted to go back.
- 14:07Things were hard in the desert, and because they refused to see the hand of
- 14:11God, they wanted to be in slavery over in the desert on their way to the promised land.
- 14:17They were blinded to the future blessings by the difficulty of the present.
- 14:23We have to remember that God's purposes might not always be clear to us,
- 14:29but they are always good.
- 14:31We read in Isaiah, For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
- 14:38For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your
- 14:42ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
- 14:45God gives us his commandments and makes his will clear to us that by following
- 14:51it, things may be well with us and that we might be preserved from the pain of this world.
- 14:58Now, we all know that we still will have pain in our lives, but that pain has a purpose.
- 15:06Remember, and we know that all things work together for good to them that love
- 15:10God, to them who are called according to his purpose.
- 15:14That's Romans 8, 28.
- 15:17Can you see God's plan at work in your life? He is working. You know that, right?
- 15:23Sometimes it might seem like nothing makes sense and you can't see how the puzzle
- 15:27pieces of your life are fitting together.
- 15:31But God promises us that indeed, those puzzle pieces do fit together.
- 15:37Let's go back to that verse from Romans again. And we know that all things work
- 15:42together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
- 15:47The Israelites struggled in the desert. They couldn't see the promised land
- 15:52and didn't have the faith in God to understand that it really was coming.
- 15:57Even the evidence of his hand in their lives, their release from Egypt,
- 16:01their passing through the Red Sea, the pillars of cloud and fire that they were
- 16:05given to follow, that wasn't enough for them to believe.
- 16:09But God's hand was clearly and literally visible,
- 16:13but they still couldn't hold on to tightly enough all of the promises that God
- 16:21had for them in the land to come that flowed with milk and honey.
- 16:26In our lives, we may not have the pillars of fire or the burning bushes,
- 16:32but that doesn't mean we can't see the hand of God in our lives.
- 16:36Each and every day we can be assured that he is working and that the events
- 16:41of our lives fit together in his perfect plan.
- 16:46Now we need to be following him and pursuing him so that we're on the right
- 16:51track because those detours that
- 16:54result from our disobedience can cause us problems, avoidable problems,
- 17:00but can cause us problems.
- 17:03God's plan for us, God's perfect plan for us is perfect no matter how elusive it may seem.
- 17:11When you have days, perhaps it's even today, that your life just doesn't make
- 17:17sense, pray and ask the Lord to bring you clarity.
- 17:22Though you may not be able to
- 17:24see the end of the journey, ask God for the directions to the next step.
- 17:31Listen closely within your heart and be assured that God will answer you.
- 17:37In Jeremiah 33.3, God promises us that if we call into him, he will show us
- 17:42great and mighty things which we can't even imagine.
- 17:46Ask God to show you today the great and mighty things that he has for your life.
- 17:53Remember, you are loved. Jesus loves you.
