- 0:00Speaker 1: Continue, I'm a Yukon hockey coach. Wow, Alex Green's in
- 0:03Speaker 1: the house. Come on, Alex is our men's basketball and
- 0:06Speaker 1: football engineer. Does a fantastic job. I guess ohyea, It's
- 0:09Speaker 1: right him and Bener off the air. Because because of this,
- 0:12Speaker 1: we got a football coaches show tomorrow. We have let
- 0:15Speaker 1: me think, who do we have tomorrow? We have Jackson
- 0:17Speaker 1: Harper punt returner, and we also have Omar Dia Monday,
- 0:21Speaker 1: who had himself a monster game on Saturday. He's been
- 0:24Speaker 1: great the last ones.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Listen to the coach more on the radio. They had
- 0:27Speaker 2: him on ESPN you and it was talking that ball.
- 0:33Speaker 1: It was great, nice, very good one thing that And
- 0:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna give Dan props for this on his Hockey
- 0:40Speaker 1: Yukon Hockey Hub. You mentioned it though, process based win Saturday.
- 0:46Speaker 1: When I think of that and you saying that, I immediately
- 0:49Speaker 1: think of your time with Jerry at BC and your
- 0:52Speaker 1: conversations with Gino. Probably the same type of thing that
- 0:56Speaker 1: they expect out of their teams as head coaches, and
- 1:00Speaker 1: that's what makes them not just good teams, but great
- 1:03Speaker 1: teams that have aspirations of winning championships. Would I be
- 1:07Speaker 1: kind of going in that right direction.
- 1:08Speaker 2: With that guy, I would I would say that would
- 1:10Speaker 2: be fair. I think that it's funny because it's such
- 1:14Speaker 2: a little buzzword, the process. You know, stay with the process.
- 1:19Speaker 3: And I think basically what we're saying is there's certain
- 1:22Speaker 3: things you can't really focus on a result. I mean,
- 1:27Speaker 3: if you're focused on the result, you're not going to
- 1:29Speaker 3: play very well. But if you focus on winning fifty
- 1:32Speaker 3: five percenty of face offs, you know, that'll help you win.
- 1:36Speaker 3: If you focus on winning the net front battles, that'll
- 1:39Speaker 3: help you win. If you focus on winning special teams,
- 1:42Speaker 3: that'll help you win. If you focus on not giving
- 1:45Speaker 3: up you know, three or more odd man rushes that'll
- 1:49Speaker 3: help you win. If you focus on not taking undisciplined penalties,
- 1:53Speaker 3: that'll help you win. So though, like those are just
- 1:56Speaker 3: some of the things that that we try to focus on,
- 2:00Speaker 3: and there's others. But when you just put the focus
- 2:03Speaker 3: on that and break it down to that, you don't
- 2:06Speaker 3: think about the score. So the score doesn't really matter.
- 2:10Speaker 3: And at the end of the day, when you can achieve,
- 2:13Speaker 3: like if we have five objectives, or if we have
- 2:15Speaker 3: six objectives or seven objectives, if we can get four
- 2:18Speaker 3: out of five or six out of seven, Yeah, that's
- 2:23Speaker 3: gonna be. That's gonna give us a great chance to
- 2:25Speaker 3: win the hockey game.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Over the course of your now, you know, three decades
- 2:31Speaker 4: and coaching in Hockey East and a lifetime of experience
- 2:34Speaker 4: in it, have you come to getting a sense of
- 2:39Speaker 4: when those objectives are too many to overwhelm. You don't
- 2:43Speaker 4: want to twenty, but we.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Try to narrow it down to five and on.
- 2:51Speaker 3: So for example, on Friday night, we won the game
- 2:53Speaker 3: and we got three points, but we only achieve two
- 2:57Speaker 3: and a half of the five objectives, and that's I
- 3:00Speaker 3: wasn't very happy, and I told them that on Saturday, Saturday,
- 3:04Speaker 3: you know, Saturday night, we only got two points because
- 3:06Speaker 3: an overtime win's not worth as much as a regular win,
- 3:10Speaker 3: a regulation win. But we got four out of five,
- 3:13Speaker 3: and I was much happier because I think if you're
- 3:16Speaker 3: continually getting those objectives, you're going to win a lot
- 3:19Speaker 3: more than you not. Now, you're going to lose some
- 3:21Speaker 3: games when you play really well, but that's okay. It's
- 3:25Speaker 3: not sustainable to continue to win hockey games when you're
- 3:28Speaker 3: getting two out of five objectives or two and a
- 3:31Speaker 3: half out of five objectives or three out of five
- 3:35Speaker 3: at home, you should be getting more than that. And
- 3:38Speaker 3: if undisciplined penalties is one of your objectives, you should
- 3:41Speaker 3: already start with one you shouldn't like. That's one you
- 3:43Speaker 3: can control. You should never ever lose that objective, Mike.
- 3:48Speaker 1: On Friday, when they came back Northeastern, first goal three
- 3:53Speaker 1: on one for your team that missed the net, and
- 3:56Speaker 1: then Northeastern comes down to score, you can an odd
- 3:59Speaker 1: man rush. I would think you got to at least
- 4:02Speaker 1: get the puck on the net to at least try
- 4:04Speaker 1: to combat a potential odd man rush the other way
- 4:08Speaker 1: and give yourself a good chance to maybe even get
- 4:11Speaker 1: a greasey goal if you're not scoring on the first shot.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah, you do.
- 4:15Speaker 3: But the puck was in Jake Richard's hands. So when
- 4:19Speaker 3: he has a puck in his hands, if he wants
- 4:20Speaker 3: to try to go top shelf, I'm okay with it because.
- 4:24Speaker 2: He can do it now.
- 4:26Speaker 3: He missed it, And when you miss it, there's consequences
- 4:30Speaker 3: on a three on one because it's going to come
- 4:32Speaker 3: back at you the other way four on two pretty much,
- 4:35Speaker 3: And that's kind of what happened but we did survive it.
- 4:38Speaker 3: We just missed some assignments after the fact.
- 4:43Speaker 4: On Friday, you played without Joey Muldowney got back into
- 4:47Speaker 4: the lineup on Saturday, obviously had the game winning golden overtime. Yeah,
- 4:53Speaker 4: what from a health standpoint, without getting too deep into it,
- 4:56Speaker 4: you know, how was he ready Saturday but not Friday?
- 4:59Speaker 4: What was he still working through to just get better?
- 5:01Speaker 2: So he had a concussion.
- 5:05Speaker 3: So in this concussion protocol, now, it was really an
- 5:10Speaker 3: innocuous hit that happened, you know on Friday night when
- 5:15Speaker 3: he got knocked out of the game and he actually
- 5:18Speaker 3: delivered the hit, but the way he fell on the opponent,
- 5:22Speaker 3: he hit his head in the way, and it happens.
- 5:25Speaker 3: And I'm all for the back when I was playing,
- 5:29Speaker 3: he probably would have played on Saturday night. I mean
- 5:31Speaker 3: that's how it was back then, right, you know. And
- 5:34Speaker 3: I just think it's I love the whole concussion protocol
- 5:38Speaker 3: because it's just black and white. You have to go
- 5:41Speaker 3: through every step before you are eligible to play again.
- 5:45Speaker 3: And could we have fudged a step maybe and put
- 5:47Speaker 3: him in Friday night. Not I'm not gonna do that,
- 5:50Speaker 3: and I'm not I'm not gonna have our trainers do that.
- 5:52Speaker 3: So that's why he didn't play Friday night, and he
- 5:54Speaker 3: could play Saturday night, you know, and he was probably
- 5:59Speaker 3: you know, it was funny, was I thought he was
- 6:01Speaker 3: a little tentative at first on Saturday, okay, And it's
- 6:05Speaker 3: like you have to go through a physical practice before
- 6:09Speaker 3: you can be cleared to play, which he did. But
- 6:12Speaker 3: a physical practice with your own teammates is not like
- 6:15Speaker 3: playing an opponent, and it's not the same. So I
- 6:19Speaker 3: thought he was a little tentative. In fact, I wasn't
- 6:21Speaker 3: even going to play him in overtime, but Tyler Helton
- 6:24Speaker 3: had sent me a clip from Nick Saban on It's
- 6:28Speaker 3: a great story when he was fifteen years old and
- 6:30Speaker 3: he was a quarterback and there was fourth and seven
- 6:34Speaker 3: or whatever, fourth and goal from the seven yard line,
- 6:36Speaker 3: and he called the plays, he was the quarterback, and
- 6:38Speaker 3: the coach called the time out, and Nick Saban said,
- 6:41Speaker 3: I'm so excited that he called the time out because
- 6:43Speaker 3: he can call this play. And he went over to
- 6:45Speaker 3: the sidelines and he says, coach, what do you want
- 6:48Speaker 3: to call? And the coach said, well, you're going to
- 6:51Speaker 3: call a play, he said, but you have an All
- 6:54Speaker 3: State running back and you got an all state wide receiver.
- 6:57Speaker 3: He said, just make sure whatever play you call go
- 7:00Speaker 3: to one of those two. And he says that was
- 7:02Speaker 3: the best lesson he learned because it's not so much
- 7:04Speaker 3: about the play, it's just make sure it's going in
- 7:06Speaker 3: the right player's hands. So I wasn't going to play
- 7:08Speaker 3: Joe winning overtime because I thought he was tentative, and
- 7:10Speaker 3: I thought about what Tyler has sent me. I said,
- 7:13Speaker 3: this kid scored thirty goals for us last year. How
- 7:15Speaker 3: do I not put him on the ice in overtime?
- 7:17Speaker 1: Yeah, he talks about the game winning goal in our
- 7:19Speaker 1: interview coming up because he wanted to shoot it but
- 7:22Speaker 1: he never saw He wanted to go glove low, but
- 7:25Speaker 1: he never saw it available.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Then that's why he made his move. Was a goal
- 7:29Speaker 2: scorer goal, Yeah, it was. It was. I actually thought
- 7:32Speaker 2: he got it, like.
- 7:33Speaker 3: At first, I didn't realize it went in because he
- 7:35Speaker 3: almost when he turned around, he almost got it with
- 7:37Speaker 3: the paddle.
- 7:38Speaker 4: So Nick Saban has multiple national championships with Alabama, multiple
- 7:42Speaker 4: wins with the Dolphins in the NFL. He's got one
- 7:44Speaker 4: hockey coaching win as well.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Yeah, he got one layer of the night. Yeah, give
- 7:47Speaker 3: him credit. See if he can get me on college
- 7:49Speaker 3: game day.
- 7:50Speaker 2: As a picker.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Well, maybe they'll come up. Maybe they'll come to the
- 7:53Speaker 1: start for next year.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Who knows.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Well, hey, look, if we were undefeated, maybe they would
- 7:57Speaker 1: have showed up last week at Air against Air Force.
- 7:58Speaker 2: You never know, they're going back to Oregon this week.
- 8:00Speaker 2: What the hell?
- 8:01Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you know whatever, that is what it is,
- 8:04Speaker 1: all right, more with Cave in a minute, Shae and
- 8:06Speaker 1: Kate and Shahan and Joey Muldowney later on the Yukonacki
- 8:09Speaker 1: Coaches Show here on their field.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Stay with us,
