- 0:00Good morning and welcome to Morning Medical with Dr.
- 0:04Chow.
- 0:04I'm Dr.
- 0:04Chi-Ming Chow, and today we're diving into the latest health headlines from around the world.
- 0:09Let's start with some concerning news coming out of Quebec, Canada, where a measles outbreak
- 0:14has been making headlines.
- 0:19The Quebec Health Ministry has confirmed an eleventh case of measles in the province.
- 0:23This latest case surfaced after the infected individual visited the Carrefour Laval mall on
- 0:29January seventh.
- 0:30This visit potentially exposed thousands of people to the highly contagious virus, as the
- 0:35person was contagious during their time at the mall and the nearby Renaud-Bray bookstore.
- 0:41Measles is known for its high contagion rate and is an airborne disease, which means it's
- 0:47spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
- 0:51The symptoms include high fever, runny nose, red eyes, and a red rash that typically starts
- 0:57on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
- 1:00Unfortunately, Quebec has already faced two measles outbreaks in the past year – one in
- 1:06February and the other in December, which is still ongoing.
- 1:10The ministry is urging the public to be cautious, especially if they were present at
- 1:15the mall or other identified locations during the exposure times.
- 1:21These locations include places in Montreal, Laval, the Laurentians, and
- 1:26Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville.
- 1:28In fact, the current outbreak was declared in December after a case was imported from abroad,
- 1:34following the NATO conference at the Palais des congrès de Montréal in late November.
- 1:40If you've been in contact with someone who has measles and are not vaccinated, it's crucial to
- 1:46get vaccinated within seventy-two hours to protect yourself.
- 1:50Fortunately, people who are already protected against measles are unlikely to contract the
- 1:55disease.
- 1:56The Quebec Health Ministry has been actively updating its website with more locations of
- 2:01possible exposure, so it's a good idea to stay informed if you're in the area.
- 2:07Let's talk about a new trend in personal care products: whole-body deodorants.
- 2:13These products are popping up on store shelves next to traditional underarm deodorants,
- 2:17promising to control odor all over the body.
- 2:21But do we really need them?
- 2:22Let's delve into what experts have to say.
- 2:26According to Dr.
- 2:27Marisa Plescia, vice president of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, the trend of whole-body
- 2:33deodorants is gaining traction because some areas of the body, like the groin, are more
- 2:38prone to microbial growth and odor.
- 2:41However, many of these products are similar to conventional deodorants or body sprays,
- 2:47containing powdery elements like arrowroot powder, tapioca starch, and magnesium carbonate
- 2:53to absorb sweat, along with fragrances to mask odor.
- 2:58Interestingly, some of these products incorporate antimicrobial compounds that target
- 3:03odor-causing bacteria.
- 3:05For instance, mandelic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, is used in some products to kill bacteria
- 3:12on the skin.
- 3:13Dr.
- 3:14Chris Adigun, a dermatologist, points out that while the exact mechanism isn't fully
- 3:19understood, these products can be effective if you're okay with sweating, as they help reduce
- 3:24odor without controlling sweat with aluminum salts found in traditional antiperspirants.
- 3:31Another approach involves ingredients like magnesium hydroxide, which increases the skin's
- 3:36pH, making it less hospitable for bacteria such as Staphylococcus hominis and Corynebacterium
- 3:43tuberculostearicum.
- 3:45Brands like Curie use witch hazel and post-biotics, which are byproducts of bacteria
- 3:50commonly found on the skin, to keep bacterial growth in check.
- 3:55Despite the innovation, experts like Dr.
- 3:58Adigun and Dr.
- 3:59Plescia question the necessity of full-body deodorants.
- 4:02From a biological standpoint, not all areas of the body produce odor, as apocrine glands,
- 4:09responsible for body odor, are primarily located in the armpits and groin.
- 4:14Most sweat glands do not release the fats and proteins that bacteria feed on to produce odor.
- 4:21Philosophically, Dr.
- 4:22Plescia challenges the notion that we need to mask our natural scent all over.
- 4:29She worries about the marketing message suggesting that we smell bad and must use
- 4:34deodorant everywhere.
- 4:36This concern is echoed by Dr.
- 4:38Adigun, who finds the message particularly troubling when targeted at women, perpetuating
- 4:45the idea that they need to cleanse their entire bodies to be acceptable.
- 4:50Moreover, there are potential downsides to using deodorants everywhere.
- 4:54Dr.
- 4:54Jeanine Downie, a dermatologist, warns that some ingredients in whole-body deodorants can
- 4:59irritate sensitive skin.
- 5:01It's especially important for people with vaginas to be cautious, as certain ingredients
- 5:06might disrupt the delicate balance of microflora, leading to infections.
- 5:11Ultimately, if you enjoy the scent and feel of these products and do not have sensitive skin,
- 5:16using them isn't necessarily harmful.
- 5:19However, regular bathing with soap and water should suffice for most people, as Dr.
- 5:24Downie suggests.
- 5:26It's about finding what works for you while being mindful of your skin's sensitivity.

- 12:45A troubling story has emerged from San Bernardino, California, where a man named
- 12:50Joseph Journell experienced the tragic loss of two of his beloved pet cats after they drank
- 12:55raw milk contaminated with the H5N1 bird flu virus.
- 13:01The milk in question had been recalled by Raw Farm in Fresno, California, but not before
- 13:07Alexander, a 14-year-old tabby, and Tuxsie, a 4-year-old tuxedo cat, consumed it and
- 13:14subsequently died.
- 13:16Another cat, Big Boy, was also affected but managed to survive after being hospitalized and
- 13:22treated with antiviral medications.
- 13:25The cats were kept indoors and had no exposure to infected birds, indicating that the raw milk
- 13:31was indeed the source of the virus.
- 13:33Joseph Journell had been feeding his cats raw cow’s milk from Raw Farm, believing it had
- 13:39"better immunity and healing properties" than pasteurized milk.
- 13:43This tragic incident highlights the potential risks associated with consuming raw milk, which
- 13:50health officials warn can carry various pathogens, including the bird flu virus.
- 13:56Following the incident, Journell demanded compensation from Raw Farm for the $12,000 he
- 14:02incurred in veterinary expenses.
- 14:05However, Raw Farm's owner, Mark McAfee, contested the claim, suggesting that the virus
- 14:10should not have been capable of making the animals sick by the time the milk was consumed.
- 14:16Nonetheless, experts, including Richard Webby from St.
- 14:19Jude Children’s Research Hospital, have confirmed that cats consuming raw milk from
- 14:23infected cows can develop neurological disease and die, as observed in nearly a dozen cases
- 14:29across California.
- 14:32The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has previously confirmed that cats who drank
- 14:37raw milk from infected cows developed neurological disease and died.
- 14:43This case is part of a larger outbreak affecting over 900 dairy herds across 16
- 14:49states, with a significant number of these in California.
- 14:53Health officials advise against the consumption of raw milk and raw meat diets for both humans
- 14:59and pets due to the risk of infection.
- 15:02Joseph Journell himself fell ill after the incident but was not tested for bird flu at the
- 15:08time due to a lack of available tests.
- 15:11He has since recovered physically but continues to grapple with the emotional impact of losing
- 15:17his pets.
- 15:18Despite his ordeal, Journell still believes in some of the purported health benefits of raw
- 15:23milk, though he has decided not to consume it again in the near future.
- 15:29Our final story today offers a fresh perspective on a beloved morning ritual—coffee
- 15:33drinking—and its potential health benefits.
- 15:37Recent research from Tulane University, published in the European Heart Journal,
- 15:42suggests that the timing of your coffee consumption may be just as important as the
- 15:46amount you drink.
- 15:47This study reveals that drinking coffee in the morning is associated with a lower risk of
- 15:52cardiovascular disease and a reduced overall mortality rate compared to drinking coffee
- 15:57throughout the day.
- 15:59The study tracked the coffee consumption habits and health outcomes of over forty thousand
- 16:04adults, highlighting that those who primarily drank coffee before midday had a sixteen
- 16:09percent lower risk of dying from any cause and a thirty-one percent lower risk of dying from
- 16:14cardiovascular disease.
- 16:15This is compared to non-coffee drinkers, with no significant risk reduction observed in those
- 16:20who consumed coffee all day.
- 16:23Led by Dr.
- 16:24Lu Qi, a professor at Tulane University's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine,
- 16:30the research emphasizes that caffeine's effects on the body might vary depending on when it's
- 16:36consumed.
- 16:37Dr.
- 16:38Qi points out that while coffee is known to lower the risk of some chronic diseases, like
- 16:43type 2 diabetes, this study is the first to investigate whether the timing of consumption
- 16:48affects heart health.
- 16:51The study involved participants from the United States National Health and Nutrition
- 16:55Examination Survey between 1999 and 2018.
- 17:00Participants reported their food and drink intake, including coffee consumption, while a
- 17:05subgroup maintained a detailed diary for a week.
- 17:09Researchers linked these records to mortality data over a nine to ten-year period, finding
- 17:14that morning coffee drinkers benefitted from lower health risks.
- 17:18Dr.
- 17:19Qi suggests that drinking coffee in the morning might align better with our natural circadian
- 17:24rhythms, potentially minimizing disruptions to hormones like melatonin, which can affect
- 17:30cardiovascular health.
- 17:31However, further studies are needed to confirm these findings across different populations and
- 17:37to explore the biological mechanisms involved.
- 17:41An editorial accompanying the study, authored by Professor Thomas F.
- 17:45Lüscher from Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals in London, supports these findings.
- 17:51He notes that morning coffee drinkers showed lower risks of all-cause and cardiovascular
- 17:56mortality, possibly due to the natural increase in sympathetic activity that occurs in the
- 18:02morning, which diminishes throughout the day.
- 18:06Professor Lüscher also points out that coffee may suppress melatonin, which could explain why
- 18:11all-day coffee drinkers often experience sleep disturbances.
- 18:15The editorial reinforces the growing body of evidence that morning coffee consumption is
- 18:20likely beneficial to health, encouraging people to enjoy their coffee in the morning.
- 18:25As we conclude today's episode, it's clear that the timing of our daily habits can have a
- 18:31significant impact on our health.
- 18:33Whether it's the timing of your coffee or other lifestyle choices, these small adjustments
- 18:39might make a big difference.
- 18:41Thank you for joining me on Morning Medical with Dr.
- 18:44Chow.
- 18:44I'm Dr.
- 18:45Chi-Ming Chow, wishing you good health and a mindful start to your day.
- 18:50Until next time, take care.
