- 0:31podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:32Becker's third annual spring care issues roundtable.
- 0:36Today, I am thrilled to be joined by
- 0:37Brian Smolich,
- 0:39VP of quality and managed care operations at
- 0:41Health Alliance Medical Plans. Brian, thank you so
- 0:44much for being with me today. Yeah. Thanks.
- 0:45Good morning. Good morning to you too. So
- 0:48before we begin, I'd like to have you
- 0:50just introduce yourself and share a little bit
- 0:52more about your background and your organization.
- 0:54Sure.
- 0:55So my name is Brian Smolich.
- 0:57I serve as vice president of quality and
- 0:58managed care operations for Healthline's medical plans
- 1:02and First Carolina Care. We're part of the
- 1:04Carle Health System, and we serve patients
- 1:08that are primarily located in, Central And Southern
- 1:11Illinois as well as North Carolina.
- 1:14I have responsibilities
- 1:16of,
- 1:17pharmacy,
- 1:17medical management,
- 1:19quality,
- 1:20and our member relations,
- 1:22appeals team
- 1:24at our health.
- 1:25Well, thank you so much for sharing a
- 1:26little bit about your background. Now to begin
- 1:28our conversation today, I'd like to kick it
- 1:30off by talking about balancing affordability and quality.
- 1:33So how is your organization
- 1:35innovating to manage the cost of care while
- 1:37maintaining or improving member outcomes?
- 1:40Yeah. So at Health Alliance Medical Plans and
- 1:42First Carolina Care, quality is at the center
- 1:44of everything that we do.
- 1:46You know, you you really have to put
- 1:48quality
- 1:48in front of cost and affordability.
- 1:50But, you know, we we do realize that
- 1:53if if you're not financially sound and and
- 1:56you're not able to balance
- 1:58premiums and and revenue with rising cost, then
- 2:02it's gonna be difficult to, you know, offer
- 2:05the plans and and benefits that you want
- 2:07to members.
- 2:08But for us, I mean, our people are
- 2:10exceptional. They
- 2:12have
- 2:13a wonderful,
- 2:14engagement with our members, our customer solutions team,
- 2:17our case management team, and our clinical platforms
- 2:20really take the view of working collaboratively with
- 2:23the provider to ensure patients have the best
- 2:25care.
- 2:26So far as innovation,
- 2:28you know, we've put a lot of focus
- 2:29in the biosimilar space at least on the
- 2:31pharmacy benefit side. That has really helped us
- 2:35reduce costs on medications
- 2:38without compromising
- 2:40patients'
- 2:40access to care or helping us to afford
- 2:43additional therapies that are newer or novel.
- 2:46I'd like to explore that a little bit
- 2:48further on the basis of member satisfaction as
- 2:51a whole. So what experience or engagement strategies
- 2:54have proven effective for your organization, and how
- 2:56are you measuring that success?
- 2:58Yeah. So our organization,
- 3:00tracks not only, on our our vertically integrated
- 3:04health system, the provider side MPS four, but
- 3:06we're also tracking health plan MPS four.
- 3:09And I think we do an exceptional job
- 3:11of engaging members through our customer solutions team.
- 3:15They also
- 3:16have the resources to tap into our clinical
- 3:19experts,
- 3:20So there's a lot more
- 3:21collaboration
- 3:23on individual patient cases,
- 3:25connecting the dots and getting patients access to
- 3:28our medical management team, a pharmacist,
- 3:30our population health or care coordination team. I
- 3:33think really making it easier for patients to
- 3:36navigate has been helpful.
- 3:38We've also utilized digital solutions
- 3:41and vendors,
- 3:42some of which, you know,
- 3:44have gamified,
- 3:46health care and and
- 3:48healthy behaviors like medication adherence,
- 3:51and we're seeing a lot of positive outcomes
- 3:53from member engagement through those digital platforms.
- 3:57The other benefit they provide for us is
- 3:59their high touch. You know, members will be
- 4:01in apps daily
- 4:03completing tech,
- 4:04activities and and earning rewards. And we can
- 4:07also then engage them with prompts and gaps
- 4:10in care and things that they need to
- 4:11do where that becomes much more difficult when
- 4:14you're trying to engage a member just telephonically
- 4:16and,
- 4:17the hesitancy
- 4:18to to pick up a phone. So I
- 4:20think we've really seen how how the digital
- 4:23solutions that we employ can supplement
- 4:25all the great work that our people are
- 4:27doing at the planet.
- 4:29Absolutely. And I'd like to pivot our conversation
- 4:32just a little bit to the imperative to
- 4:34reduce costs, improve quality, and advance health equity.
- 4:37So how do you approach aligning these priorities
- 4:39in your organization's strategic vision?
- 4:42I think it all goes back to quality,
- 4:44and,
- 4:45I I think our geography in in Central
- 4:48Illinois as well as in North Carolina,
- 4:50you know, our being a regional health plan,
- 4:53we
- 4:54directly interact on a daily basis with individuals
- 4:58that have our health care coverage. So I
- 5:01think that becomes the center of what you
- 5:03do. You you know that, you're improving the
- 5:06care within your communities, and that makes the
- 5:08work that we do very rewarding.
- 5:11I think,
- 5:13overall,
- 5:13we we look at approaches to reduce costs
- 5:16within,
- 5:18what we can control,
- 5:19but I think the general philosophy
- 5:22improving the care and access to health care
- 5:25in our communities and bettering,
- 5:28the population is kind of our North Star
- 5:30in knowing that this
- 5:33is health care that impacts those that we
- 5:35work with, our family, our friends, and and
- 5:37I think that really becomes impactful when you
- 5:39think about
- 5:41quality,
- 5:42in the patients we serve.
- 5:44And looking ahead, I wanna talk a little
- 5:46bit more about the future of the payer
- 5:48space. So what do you see are the
- 5:50biggest opportunities
- 5:51for payers to lead the charge in transforming
- 5:53care delivery and driving better outcomes for all
- 5:55stakeholders?
- 5:56And how can leaders take a step in
- 5:58this direction now?
- 5:59Yeah. I think,
- 6:01a big area of opportunity is to continuing
- 6:03to bridge the gap between providers and health
- 6:06plans.
- 6:07You know, for years
- 6:09and
- 6:09even today, there's oftentimes an adversarial
- 6:13approach, and I think that puts the patient
- 6:15in the middle of a lot of dynamics
- 6:18that make,
- 6:19navigating health care more difficult.
- 6:21I know at our health care organization, we're
- 6:24trying to work collaboratively with providers to pass
- 6:26more information,
- 6:29to make,
- 6:30you know, access to information that the health
- 6:32plan has easier and to reduce some of
- 6:34the burden in prior authorization,
- 6:36but really involving the provider and and finding
- 6:39a solution where we can work collaboratively with
- 6:42them to have a win win situation and
- 6:46and make
- 6:47all of the navigating of health care and
- 6:49promoting,
- 6:50you know, providers as as
- 6:52key resources in in a patient's health care
- 6:55journey as well as the provider recognizing that
- 6:57the health plan is trying to do the
- 6:59best interest in the patient and making sure
- 7:01that health care remains affordable. I'd like to
- 7:03see that dynamic happen, and I think it's,
- 7:06just continuing to build bridges with providers, trying
- 7:09to see how we can make their lives
- 7:11easier on providing
- 7:13access to care and reducing some of the
- 7:16the challenges that they face on a daily
- 7:17basis.
- 7:19Well, Brian, thank you so much for taking
- 7:21the time to have this conversation with me
- 7:22today. Again, this is Haley Becker with the
- 7:25Becker's Payer podcast recording live at the Becker's
- 7:28third annual spring payer issues roundtable. Thank you
- 7:30so much. Thank you.
