- 0:00History's strange, it's alien, and it won't give us what we
- 0:04would like to have. Rome in 54 The Common Era was no
- 0:10stranger to political intrigue, backstabbing, sometimes quite
- 0:14literally, and an ever changing balance of power.
- 0:18But even for Rome, the events surrounding the transition from
- 0:22Claudius to Nero were nothing short of extraordinary.
- 0:26Let's take a look at how an awkward, underestimated man like
- 0:29Claudius rose to power, and how his death under suspicious
- 0:34circumstances ushered in the age of Nero, an emperor whose legacy
- 0:38is written in flames and in blood.
- 0:42Claudius's early life was, well, let's just say no one ever
- 0:48expected this man to end up on the throne of Rome.
- 0:51Born in 10 before the Common Era, Claudius had a series of
- 0:56physical ailments, a limp, a stutter, all of which made him
- 1:00the butt of his family's jokes. His relatives, including the
- 1:04brutal Caligula, saw him as weak and incapable of holding any
- 1:08real position of authority. For years he was shuffled aside,
- 1:13treated as little more than a non political pawn in the
- 1:16imperial family, a curiosity more than a threat.
- 1:21But in A twist of fate, in 41 of the Common Era, when his
- 1:24deranged nephew Caligula was assassinated, Claudius became
- 1:28the surprise choice to replace him, declared emperor by none
- 1:32other than the Praetorian Guard. Initially he was thought to be a
- 1:36puppet of the guards in the Senate, but he quickly proved
- 1:40himself to be a capable leader. He conquered Britain, reformed
- 1:44the Roman legal system, and expanded the Empire's
- 1:47bureaucracy. A man no one took seriously
- 1:51actually went on to become Rome's most efficient emperor.
- 1:55But even the most effective rulers are never far from
- 1:58danger, especially when family politics come into play.
- 2:03Claudius had quite the turbulent personal life, with four
- 2:06marriages. His fourth and final wife,
- 2:10Agrapina. The younger.
- 2:12His niece. Yes, his niece was an ambitious
- 2:16woman with designs on power. Agrapina brought with her a son
- 2:20from a previous marriage, a young man by the name of Lucius
- 2:24Demisius, whom we know today as Nero.
- 2:29In 50, Agrapina convinced Claudius to adopt Nero, making
- 2:34him the heir to the throne, leapfrogging Claudius's own
- 2:37biological son, Britannicus. The move was orchestrated by
- 2:42Agrapina, set the stage for an inevitable clash of power.
- 2:47She was always lurking in the background, had her eyes firmly
- 2:50set on securing the empire for her son, and she wasn't about to
- 2:54let anything or anyone get in the way.
- 2:58Now, here's where things get murky.
- 3:01On this day in 54, Claudius died, and his death has been
- 3:05shrouded in mystery ever since. Officially, the story is that he
- 3:09passed away from illness, but ancient historians were not so
- 3:13sure to see this. Cetonius, Gassius Dio all
- 3:18suggested that Claudius may have been poisoned, and not just by
- 3:21anyone, but by his loving wife. The most popular version of the
- 3:27story claimed that Agrapena poisoned Claudius by serving him
- 3:30a dish of his favorite food, mushrooms, that had been
- 3:33poisoned. Some say the poison was
- 3:36delivered slowly through repeated doses, while others
- 3:39suggested that it was all done in one final meal.
- 3:43Theories even exist that a feather Claudius used to induce
- 3:46vomiting after the meal had also been laced with poison.
- 3:51So why, you ask, would she go to such lengths?
- 3:54Simple time was running out for her.
- 3:57Claudius had begun to favor his biological son, Britannicus,
- 4:00over Nero. If Britannicus reached
- 4:03adulthood, Nero's path to power would be blocked.
- 4:06She couldn't risk that. So it's been long believed that
- 4:09she hastened Claudius's demise to ensure that Nero would take
- 4:14the throne. And just like that, after his
- 4:17death on October 13th in 54, Nero ascended to power.
- 4:22He was only 16 years old, but his mother had already set the
- 4:25wheels in motion for a smooth transition.
- 4:28And it wasn't long before Nero made sure his adopted father was
- 4:31deified, which was a standard practice for Roman emperors.
- 4:35But there was a clear reason behind it.
- 4:38By deifying Claudius, Nero cemented his own legacy as
- 4:42emperor. After all, the son of a God was
- 4:45destined to rule, wasn't he? The early years of Nero's reign,
- 4:50Agrippino remained a dominant force, pulling the strings
- 4:53behind the scenes. But it didn't take long for Nero
- 4:56to tire of her influence, and he began to assert his
- 4:59independence, with disastrous results for those around him.
- 5:04But that's a story for another day.
- 5:06In the end, what kind of emperor was Claudius?
- 5:09Well, he was far from the weakling his family had
- 5:12initially assumed. He ruled for over 13 years,
- 5:15during which he brought stability and competence to the
- 5:18Roman Empire, expanded its territory, and reformed its
- 5:22government. But despite his achievements,
- 5:24his legacy was tainted by the constant manipulation of those
- 5:28around him, especially his wives.
- 5:31Let's not forget that his death was overshadowed by rumors of
- 5:34murder, a fitting end for a man who ruled in a time of
- 5:38unparalleled intrigue. With him gone, all eyes turned
- 5:43to Nero, and what followed was nothing short of a spectacle.
- 5:47At first, his reign showed promise, guided by Seneca and
- 5:50Burris. His early years were marked by
- 5:52relatively stable governance, but soon the cracks would begin
- 5:56to show. Nero wanted freedom from his
- 5:59mother's grip, and he wasn't going to let anything, family,
- 6:02friends, or even Rome itself stand in his way.
- 6:06From the murder of his mother, to the persecution of Christians
- 6:10to the infamous Great Fire of Rome, Nero's reign would spiral
- 6:13into chaos. Claudius's death was just the
- 6:17beginning of that wild and destructive ride.
- 6:21The death of Claudius in The Rise of Nero is a tale of
- 6:24ambition, poison, power, and as much as Claudius's reign is
- 6:28remembered for its accomplishments, it is his death
- 6:30in the circumstances around it which paved the way for one of
- 6:34the most notorious emperors in Roman history.
- 6:37Nero's time and power would be defined by extravagance,
- 6:39cruelty, and a growing instability that will leave a
- 6:43lasting mark on the empire. Check out more stories from
