- 1:29Dollar. As we continue on with the Picture Postcard Matter Parts three and four
- 1:36from Hollywood, It's time now for as a innkeeper. I have a telephone
- 1:46call for you from police Inspector Hanaga and Zurich. Pretty go ahead. I
- 1:51inspected any line on sebastians killer. That also means no line on the stolen
- 1:57diamonds. Then I do not know you record a picture of postcard Sebastian gave
- 2:00you before his death, the picture of the clibach in sure. He said
- 2:05it was part of a key to the location of the diamonds. That's why
- 2:07I came up here to the end. But I haven't found any sign of
- 2:10them. We have been watching Sebastian's apartment. This morning, the second part
- 2:15of the key arrived in his mail another postcard. Yes, I am sending
- 2:17it on to you. See what you can make of it looks like we're
- 2:21in the middle of a game of some kind. Have you been able to
- 2:23locate the missing murder suspect Ilsa Shaefer. I've not only located her in five
- 2:29minutes, I'm going skiing with her. What heir dollar? Do you think
- 2:31that is wise for you? It's one way of finding out if she ties
- 2:35in. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be the hideway. The
- 2:46night and every weekday Night Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with
- 2:50the Action Packed Expenser cout America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator Yours Truly Johnny Dollar.
- 3:07Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Home Office Global Casualty in
- 3:14Hertford, Connecticut assignment. The picture postcard matter location Clibax, Switzerland expense account
- 3:21continued Item seven three dollars American rent al on ski equipment. Ilsa Schaeffer told
- 3:30me she'd come to Clibax to go skiing, and I wanted to make sure
- 3:32that was her reason. There'd been too many coincidences about her to suit me.
- 3:38First of the way, she popped into my cab and Zurich, then
- 3:40popped out two blocks later, leaving her purse behind. Right after that,
- 3:44I'd been jumped by a strong arm who was sure Ilsa had passed the stolen
- 3:47diamonds to me. And now she turns up suddenly at the Clibak Inn.
- 3:52I spotted her waiting for me at the Skiva. Come on, Johnny,
- 3:55your name in a skiing outfit. She could have passed for Miss Switzerland.
- 4:00Nasty little thought kept coming into my brain, kept marring the picture. She
- 4:03could also be Sebastian's killer. We rowed the lift up to the top and
- 4:09took off along the ridges. She skied like she was born towards easy,
- 4:14smooth and gracefully. It had been four years since I'd last been on skis,
- 4:17and as I struggled to keep up with her, I must have looked
- 4:20like a rusty snowplow. We worked our way out on the crest of one
- 4:25of the ridges. Let's stop here a moment. All that suits me?
- 4:30Fine? You winded? This is not exactly sea level. You get used
- 4:36to it. You see, I really can ski, Johnny. Oh,
- 4:42that's an understatement. Do you have a cigarette? Yeah? Sure? Here
- 4:50nice? Isn't it beautiful up here? Johnny? Yeah? You see that
- 4:57little that way down there? That is the inn A long way down.
- 5:00That's what I like about skiing. Everything is so remote, so far below.
- 5:06When you're up here, all that down there, it it just doesn't
- 5:11exist anymore. It's always there. When you get back, though, you
- 5:14are too practical journey, But you know, it's fun being with you.
- 5:18Thanks. I still can't get over it. What the coincidence that I should
- 5:25share your cabin Zurich and then run into you again at the clybacking. But
- 5:30I am glad, aren't. You can't say that I must have come from
- 5:35that other ridge behind the rocks closer. We're sitting ducks on this ridge down
- 5:41in the side of it. There is a shortcut. Let's go keep row
- 5:46elsa who would be shooting at us. We'll figure that out and when we
- 5:50get out of range, it's still right with us. We'll be out of
- 5:55sight in a moment. Could be a moment too late. Yeah, past
- 6:00the shoulder. Yeah, swamp's pretty steep here. This is the quigkest way.
- 6:05The shoulder of the ridge will keep us out of sight. Maybe,
- 6:10what do you mean we get going much faster. I'm gonna take you off
- 6:14hey, ahead of us, Johnny start. What do you think I'm trying
- 6:16to do? Oh? Brother, Johnny? Four feet more? And I
- 6:26thank Heaven. This was a real great route you picked. You'll say,
- 6:30oh, I can't tell you sorry, I'm sorry I didn't go over the
- 6:33edge. Oh course not. I mean I'm sorry that in the excitement I
- 6:40forgot about the avalanche. Avalanche, Yes, several months ago he took away
- 6:45part of the slope and left this sheer drop forgot about it. Huh.
- 6:48Hell, I just told you I did. I know that you didn't have
- 6:51much trouble stopping in time, but I was behind you. Oh yeah,
- 6:56that's just where you were behind me. What are you trying to say,
- 7:00Johnny, Just that this is one coincidence too many, Elsa. We just
- 7:03happened to stop on the top of the ridge, right where I make a
- 7:05grade a target. Then you just happen to forget there's a sheer drop on
- 7:10this shortcut you got me to take. You were going back to the end.
- 7:24The fire feels good, doesn't it, Johnny? Johnny? What is
- 7:29it? What's the matter all those things you said up on the read.
- 7:32I'm waiting, Elsa, waiting for us for you to open up and tell
- 7:36me what this is all about and how you fit into the deal. Oh
- 7:40cut it out, will you. You didn't just happen to share my cab
- 7:43back and Zurich. The whole thing was rigged so it would look like you
- 7:46passed those stolen diamonds along to me. Johnny, I don't know anything about
- 7:50stolen diamond I suppose you also don't know anything about a man named Sebastian.
- 7:56Yes, I know Sebastian. What has he got to do there? Oh?
- 8:03Yes, I can't believe it, Sebastian. Yeah, and you've already
- 8:13admitted you knew Sebastian. Now let's have the rest of the story straight.
- 8:18Well, Sebastian was a friend of mine, friend, nothing more. He
- 8:22had asked me to share your cab at the airport and to leave my person
- 8:26in. Why did he want you to do that? I don't know.
- 8:31He well, he said he was in some kind of trouble and needed help.
- 8:35He said if I would do that, it would help him. Elsa,
- 8:37You'll have to do better than that. But I am telling you the
- 8:41truth. No, hey, wait a minute. You claim you didn't know
- 8:46what kind of trouble Sebastian was, and no, he didn't tell me.
- 8:48You also claim you don't know anything about the diamonds one hundred thousand dollars wall
- 8:52what I read about that in the newspapers. But wait a monute. Are
- 8:58you saying that Sebastian john was involved in it up to his ears. I'm
- 9:03sorry to hear that, Johnny, but you must believe me I did not
- 9:07know anything about it. You're either telling the truth that you're a weight of
- 9:13an actress. Delsa. I'm telling you the truth, okay, But about
- 9:18the taxicab in Zurika, I don't understand. Sebastian was trying to double cross
- 9:22the rest of the outfit by negotiating with me for the return of the diamonds.
- 9:26But apparently there was another outfit after the diamonds. He wanted to make
- 9:31it look to them like he passed the diamonds along to take the heat off.
- 9:33You said a man attacked you after I had left your cab. Yeah,
- 9:37he obviously thought you'd slip me the diamonds. So Sebastian was setting me
- 9:41up as a patsy on the one hand and negotiating with me on the other.
- 9:46Who could have killed him? Good question? Could be the outfit trying
- 9:50to grab the stones, or Sebastian's own crowd found out he was trying to
- 9:52sell him out, and the person who shot at us upon the name,
- 9:56two possibilities, which reminds me you still haven't explained how you happened to come
- 10:01up here to the Climback in, Sebastian told me he had unfinished business in
- 10:07Zurich and he would meet me here in a few days, and we would
- 10:09go skiing. I see, tell me, did you know any of Sebastian's
- 10:13friends, one or two slightly? Was one of them? Big and powerful,
- 10:18thick features, almost bald. No, why, Oh, he's the
- 10:22one who jumping in the hotel lobby after my cab ride with you. Oh
- 10:26no, no, I am certain I would remember him the way you describe
- 10:31him. Oh, there was a man Sebastian spent a great deal of time
- 10:35with. But he was short and stucky, with very thick neck. Well,
- 10:39that fits the description of one of the men in the robbery at the
- 10:41Zurich airport. You know his name? Why Bruner? I think it?
- 10:48Yes, yes, Grooner, the man who sent the postcard to Sebastian.
- 10:54Yeah, that ties in all right, postcard. I let's skip. That
- 10:58was one of Sebastian's friends in English, not that I know of. Why.
- 11:03Well, a fellow named Jeffrey Harris here at the hotel has been trying
- 11:05to strike up an acquaintance with me. Claims he thought it was all Bunny
- 11:09Dollar, a friend of his from London. Oh well, Jenny, if
- 11:15you'll excuse me, I'm very tired and upset about this news of Sebastian.
- 11:20I think I'll go to my room. Yeah, okay, there's anything more
- 11:26I can do. I'll see you later. Dollar, Oh I don't.
- 11:35Did you enjoy your skiing? Well, let's say it was real interesting.
- 11:39Got a question for you, wanta as a man of experience, how do
- 11:43you tell if a woman is lying? As an innkeeper? I learned long
- 11:48ago that one listens to a woman, agrees with her, smiles, politely,
- 11:54keeps his eyes open, and believes what he wishes about her. Yeah,
- 11:58well, I guess that's as good advice as any I hear. Dollar,
- 12:01This letter arrived for you from Zurich by special messenger value. Oh yeah,
- 12:03I was expecting it. Thanks. So one more thing. Did anybody
- 12:07else go skiing this morning from the Eton? Oh? I see, But
- 12:13say Englishman Jeffrey Harris. What about him? He likes to climb the books.
- 12:16He went out for a while climbing rocks. Huh, thanks a lot.
- 12:24Yeah, Jeffrey Harris could be my boy, all right. But at
- 12:28the moment I was more interested in the contents of the envelope police Inspector Haneger
- 12:31had sent me from Zurich. I tore it open and examined the postcard inside
- 12:35expense item eight two and a half long distance called the Zurich and Haneger.
- 12:39You received the postcard head dollar Yeah, from Grooner to Sebastian, A picture
- 12:45of a chalet on the side of a mountain. You say this kind arrived
- 12:48in Sebastian's mailbox this morning. Apparently Grooner is unaware of Sebastian's death. What
- 12:54do you make of the card? Well? As chalet in the picture is
- 12:56sort of a small halfway house for skiers. Is it attended no empty most
- 13:01of the time? Here? Dollar? Possibly the first postcard of the inn
- 13:05was simply for the purpose of guiding Sebastian to climbarch. This second is perhaps
- 13:09a picture of the actual location of the diamonds. That's what I'm going up
- 13:13there to find out. The trail of the mountains started in the back of
- 13:18the inn. I worked my way up the ridge, slowly, keeping an
- 13:20eye on every clump of rock, just in case my friend with the rifle
- 13:24was still on the prowl. Inst I stopped a breath. Suddenly I spot
- 13:30at something moving far down the slope along me. Someone was descending from rock
- 13:35to rock, almost down to the inn. It was too fine to tell
- 13:37for sure, but it looked like the englishman Jeffrey Harris. I started my
- 13:41climb again. Ten minutes later I reached the halfway house, the place on
- 13:45the post guard. It was small, just a shelter, and there was
- 13:48no sign of life inside. The place was in the shambles, completely torn
- 13:52about. If this had been the hiding place of the stolen diamonds, somebody
- 13:58had sure beat me to it. Johnny Dollar, Inspector Harker of the Durich
- 14:20Police had Dollar, I, Inspector, where are you downstairs in the lobby
- 14:24of the inn. I came up from Durich to see if that picture postcard
- 14:28I sent you was a help in locating the stolen diamonds. Pray not,
- 14:31Inspector. I located the chalet and the postcard. All right, it's sort
- 14:33of a shell of her skiers up on a ridge. Well, when I
- 14:37got there, the place have been turned upside down. If the diamonds were
- 14:39hidden there, somebody show beat me to it, I see. So it
- 14:41looks like we're at a dead end. Perhaps not. What do you mean
- 14:46you recalled that in Jurich a large man attacked you, thinking that you had
- 14:50the diamonds, recall it. I've still got the lumps to prove it.
- 14:52What about him, a man answering that description or a railroad ticket here to
- 14:56Clibuk last night. Oh, we have reason to believe that he somewhere here
- 15:00in the village. Now that could mean that the diamonds that he and you
- 15:03were looking for are here after all. I'll be right down, Inspector him.
- 15:16Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Home Office Global Casually
- 15:20in Hertford, Connecticut. Assignment the picture postcard matter location Clibux, Switzerland.
- 15:26Expense account continued Adam nine seventy cents one part of coffee for Inspector Hannegher and
- 15:35myself at the Clibuck Inn. A most perplexing case, Hair Dollar, A
- 15:41skillfully timed robbery of the uncut diamonds at the Zurich airport last week, and
- 15:46then these puzzling postcards supposedly giving the location of the diamon. Yeah, they've
- 15:50got to be the key, Inspector, if we can only figure them out.
- 15:54Look, we know now that Sabasha was in on the robbery and was
- 15:58trying to negotiate secret for the return of the storm. Yeah, and he
- 16:02told you before he was murdered that the postcard he gave you was a part
- 16:06of the key to the location of the dime. That's right. It was
- 16:08signed by a man named Grooner, and according to Ilsa Schaeffer, Guner was
- 16:11a friend of Sebastian's. Her description of Guoner matches one of the men in
- 16:15the robbery at the airport. What of this young lady, Ilse the Schaeffer,
- 16:19What do you make of her? Well, that's a good question,
- 16:23inspector. I wish I knew the answer. I hope she's in the clear.
- 16:29Hope. Oh, I see I saw him not. Yeah, she
- 16:33is a very attractive young lady. But there is also the chance that she
- 16:37is involved, that she killed Sebastian. I know, I know. She
- 16:41could be involved, or she could be innocent. It's a fifty to fifty
- 16:45proposition. I guess I are your money and take your choice. Want coffee
- 16:48inspection? Please? Thank you? Oh? What is her story? Well,
- 17:02I finally got her to admit she didn't share my cab, and Zurich
- 17:04can leave her person. It just by coincidence. It was Sebastian's idea to
- 17:08make it look like she'd pass something along to me. But why would Sebastian
- 17:12wish to make it appear that you had the diamonds if he was trying to
- 17:17negotiate with you for their return. That does not make sense. Actually,
- 17:21I think it does inspect him. It could go together this way after the
- 17:26robby of the gang split up, Guner was to hide the diamonds, then
- 17:29get word of Sebastian as to their location. Of this much we are fairly
- 17:33certain, Okay, okay, But now Sebastian gets the bright idea of double
- 17:37crossing his buddies. He gets in touch with the insurance company I represent and
- 17:40they send me to Zurich to negotiate with him. I still do not.
- 17:42In the meantime, though, another outfit is moved into the picture and is
- 17:45trying to grab the stones from Sebastian and his boys. Yeah, yeah,
- 17:51that would explain many things. Sure, sure what That's why he raked that
- 17:56deal with Elsa in my taxi cab, to make it look to the other
- 17:59outfit like I had the stones that would take them off his neck. For
- 18:02a while. Yeah, he was playing me for a patsy, But I've
- 18:06got to admit it. Was a pretty fair scheme. Then later Sebastian contacts
- 18:11you and gives you the first postcard. He tells you it is part of
- 18:15the key to the location of the diamond. That's right. But Sebastian didn't
- 18:19move fast enough, so he wound up dead. But his confederate Groooner sent
- 18:25him a second cart Oh, probably mail before Sebastian was killed. It is
- 18:30possible. Now. The first postcard is a picture of this Clibach inn.
- 18:34Yeah, and according to Water, the innkeeper, it's not the best picture
- 18:37of the inn. I asked him about Gruner. He said he thought he'd
- 18:41heard the name somewhere, but that Gruner hadn't been a guest here. Perhaps
- 18:45he is down in the village. Well, I'm going to check that today.
- 18:48But if the diamonds are in the village, why the postcard of the
- 18:49inn, and why the second postcard of the ski hut on the ridge?
- 18:56I do not know. Is there anybody here at the ear in that you
- 19:00suspect of being an accomplice of Groomer and Sebastian gilsa Schaeffer for one, she
- 19:06claimed Sebastian told her he'd meet her here in a few days. For some
- 19:10skiping. I see anyone else An Englishman named Jeffrey Harris. He seems pretty
- 19:15interested in me. Claims he thought he was a friend of his from London.
- 19:19He might be telling the truth. Yeah, he might be, But
- 19:23I found out he likes to climb mountains and he was up there somewhere this
- 19:27morning when Elsa and I were skiing and got shot at. Do you think
- 19:33Fraulein Schaefer could have maneuvered you into that position? Well, she did.
- 19:37She had a lot of confidence in the marksmanship of her buddy in the rocks,
- 19:41and you told me. She suggested the route of escape, which ended
- 19:45suddenly at a cliff, which I almost went off of. Yeah, yeah,
- 19:49Inspector. I hate to say it, but she could be the one,
- 19:52and I've got to find out one way or the other, which means
- 19:56I'm going to stick pretty close to her for the time being. I gathered
- 19:59that that prospect is not entirely unpleasant to you. But be careful, hair
- 20:04Dollar, she could be dangerous. Soka Jeffrey Harris. I'm away to the
- 20:10ski hut this afternoon. I spotted him down the mountain front. Me and
- 20:12the ski hut had been torn apart. Yeah, if the diamonds were there,
- 20:17they're gone now, and Harris could be the boy who beat me to
- 20:19them. If he or anybody attempts to leave Clibach, one of my men
- 20:25at the railroad station will be reported. Well, I must be getting back
- 20:30to Tzuri care dollar. Who knows. Perhaps these postcards are just decoys and
- 20:36the stones are still in Zurich. No, No, I'd bet my bottom
- 20:40dollar they're here in Clybax somewhere if I can only figure out them meaning those
- 20:44postcards. Yeah, Otherwise, why would the man who attacked you in Zurich
- 20:48have come here? He must be hiding out in the village somewhere. Well,
- 20:52perhaps I can turn up something else of help in Zurich right now,
- 20:56Inspectrum, Anything would be of help, believe me. After Inspector Hannegat left,
- 21:06I studied the postcards again, but I got no work. One of
- 21:10the inns, the other the skier. But what did they mean? I
- 21:15went out on the balcony outside of my room and looked up at the mountains,
- 21:18but I couldn't see the ski there a ridge was in the way.
- 21:22I did see something else, though, Three rooms down the balcony Jeffrey Harris's
- 21:26French doors were open. His room was empty, so I decided to have
- 21:30a look. I wasn't sure just what I was looking for, something,
- 21:34anything that would indicate whether or not Harris was involved in the whole thing.
- 21:38I worked my way to the closet, turning up one big nothing. His
- 21:42clothes were hung neatly in place, and in one corner was stacked and climbing
- 21:47gear. I reached around behind it and my hand touchmental. I pulled it
- 21:52into view, A rifle with a telescopic sight. I sniffed at the barrel.
- 21:57The gun had been fired. Good evening, hair doll. Look have
- 22:07you seen Jeffrey Harris lately? The Englishman? Not since late afternoon Holliday long?
- 22:12He was out climbing the mountains. Yeah, I know, you know.
- 22:15Zula got bags and he went out again before dinner. It was a
- 22:18good dinner tonight too. Any idea where I went, I could be in
- 22:22a village. Look tell me something. When he arrived here at your end,
- 22:26did he have a gun case in his luggage? He had a lot
- 22:29of climbing equipment, but I did not notice a gun case, and he
- 22:33could have taken it apart and packed it in a suitcase. Why do you
- 22:36ask her? Doll? Oh skipping? I'll see you later on, Johnny.
- 22:44Oh, hello, Elsa. I've been looking for you. Yeah.
- 22:48Have you been able to find out who are shooting at us up on the
- 22:51ridge this morning? I'm not sure yet. You still do not trust me,
- 22:56do you? I don't know, Elsa? What can I do to
- 23:00prove to you that I am not involved in what anything? The diamond robbery,
- 23:03the murder of Sebastian, the attempt on your life this morning? I
- 23:08like you, Johnny. I don't want you thinking such things about me.
- 23:12Look, let's uh, let's talk about it later on. Why not?
- 23:15Now I have to go into the village. Perhaps I could go with you,
- 23:18Johnny, do you mind, no, matter of fact? That might
- 23:22be a good idea. Nice in the village tonight, isn't it. Yeah?
- 23:34Yeah, it is quiet too. You seem to be looking for something,
- 23:40Johnny, for someone else? Air Who the Englishman Jeffrey Harris. You
- 23:47told me you'd never seen him before you came here to Clybach. That is
- 23:49right, then? He wasn't a friend of Sebastian's, not as far as
- 23:53I know. Well, An hour ago on Harris's role. I found a
- 23:56rival or a telescopic site. You mean that Harris is the one who shot
- 24:00at you this morning? Otto, the innkeeper told me Harris went mountain climbing
- 24:04today. I saw him on his way down late this afternoon. But he
- 24:07isn't at the inn. Now you think he's down here in the village.
- 24:11Maybe that's why. What's the matter? Well, well, looks like maybe
- 24:18the village isn't so quiet after all. What do you mean? I think
- 24:21somebody's following us? What? Come on, I'll start walking in. Yeah,
- 24:26we're across the street and Evaca ways in the shadows. Oh what are
- 24:30you going to do to figure out? Wait a minute, that alley up
- 24:34ahead, we'll turn into it. Don't turn your head else, sir,
- 24:38Okay, into the alley. Now good, he can't see he's here.
- 24:44Who do you think he is? I don't know. I'm booner Jeffrey Harris,
- 24:47even the guy who jumped me back in Zurich, thinking I had the
- 24:49diamonds. Keep going? You think he'll come into this e That's what I'm
- 24:52hoping right now? Here we are, But do we here? Do very
- 24:56nicely? Look, he'll see you keep going down the alley, cut across
- 25:00to the next street and go back to the inn. But what are you
- 25:03going to do? Wait for him? Go on, I'm go on,
- 25:04Jack, Look you do it. I want to stay with Don't be silly.
- 25:07You get a little rough around here all of a sudden, Yes,
- 25:10nothing you can do here, Elsa, So do what I tell you now'll
- 25:11get moving now. She looked at me a moment and went down the alley
- 25:18and out of sight. A tuple of minutes went by nothing. Then I
- 25:23heard steps. He was approaching the alley. Whoever he was. Now he
- 25:30was at the entrance. I pressed back into the doorway a few more feet.
- 25:37Oh wait a minute, he decided not to bite. I edged out
- 25:41of the doorway and back to the mouth of the alley. Then I stuck
- 25:44my head around the corner. Nobody he must have ducked into a building or
- 25:48down the street. It sounded like, I'll say for the next street.
- 25:52I cut through the alley. Then I spotted a couple of people in front
- 25:56of a small hotel down the street. They were jabbering excitedly. There was
- 25:59a man crumb up on the ground. Elsa saw me and ran over he
- 26:03fell out of the upstairs window almost in front of what was it. It's
- 26:07Sebastian's friend, Grooner Crooner, the guy who'd been writing postcards to Sebastian.
- 26:17Crooner, the only man in the world who knew where the diamonds were hidden.

- 26:40final episode of this week's story. Tomorrow they'll wind up. I find out
- 26:44some people will not hesitate to kill anyone who gets in their way, and
- 26:48that's not so good when the man in the way is me. Join us,

- 27:17Bob Bailey is transcribed in Hollywood, written by Robert Rife. It is produced
- 27:22and directed by Jack Johnstone. Be sure to join us tomorrow night, same
- 27:26time and station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Roy
- 27:33Rowan speaking welcome back. Well. I love this whole setup of the picture
- 28:26postcard. This is one that it would probably be helpful to see or to
- 28:30get some more detail as to what's on the postcard, but should be interesting.
- 28:37I do think that the British guy is probably not guilty just because just
- 28:42the way the pattern of the show tends to go. Of course, according
- 28:47to Johnny, we have two groups of criminals here, so if he's not
- 28:51in one group, he could also be in the other. I won't say
- 28:53more than that because I think I might be influenced by my memory of listening
- 28:57to the show the first time. All right, well, we do have
- 29:03just one quick listener feedback and then we will go ahead and sign off.
- 29:11And this is a review on the Amazon app Store from Debbie. I've been
- 29:15enjoying this app so much. It's been a connection that I can talk about
- 29:18with my parents and they get a lot out of it too. So far,
- 29:23I've been experienced any problems with the app. Well, thanks so much,
- 29:26Debbie. I appreciate your review. And that will do it for today.
