Transcript
- 0:09Turn to James 3, please. James 3. This is really
- 0:13a carryover from what Lanny spoke of last week
- 0:19a little bit, and that the people of God, because
- 0:23chapter 3 of 1 Corinthians folds, is really kind
- 0:26of like the capstone of what we're going to be
- 0:28talking about over these next three weeks. This
- 0:30next two weeks, okay? So what happens is the
- 0:34people of God are complaining and they end up
- 0:37not getting blessed by God and God honoring them
- 0:42because they are busy talking too much. And so
- 0:47it is a detrimental thing to the people of God
- 0:50when God's people don't honor him in their language,
- 0:55okay? So... What's very important as we get into
- 0:59James 3, and I would tell you every church and
- 1:03every single human being on the planet deals
- 1:06with this problem. This is a major problem in
- 1:10every sphere. Very important, okay? And we have
- 1:14to be mindful. And the difference between us
- 1:17and those who don't know Christ is we have the
- 1:19wisdom of God. We have the mind of God. Let's
- 1:24read James 3. And as we get into James 3, we'll
- 1:28go in and I'll give you a principle, a supporting
- 1:31verse. And explain a little bit. As we usually
- 1:34do. Father I want to thank you so much for your
- 1:36word. Help us to rightly divide your word for
- 1:39your glory. That the full counsel of your word
- 1:41is spoken. And we would really grasp the importance.
- 1:44Of how we talk. Especially with each other. And
- 1:48about you. And I pray that you are honored and
- 1:51glorified. In Jesus name. Amen. Not many of you
- 1:55should become teachers, my brothers, for you
- 1:58know that we who teach will be judged with greater
- 2:01strictness, for we all stumble in many ways.
- 2:06And if anyone does not stumble in what he says,
- 2:09he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his
- 2:14whole body. If we put bits Into the mouths of
- 2:20horses. So that they obey us. We guide their
- 2:25whole bodies as well. Look at the ships also,
- 2:28though they are so large and are driven by strong
- 2:32winds, they are guided by a very small rudder,
- 2:35whatever the will of the pilot directs. So also
- 2:40the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of
- 2:44great things. How great a forest is set ablaze
- 2:48by such a small fire. And the tongue is a fire,
- 2:51a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set
- 2:55among our members. staining the whole body, setting
- 2:59on fire the entire course of life and set on
- 3:03fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird,
- 3:09of reptile, sea creature can be tamed. And has
- 3:14been tamed by mankind, but no human being can
- 3:17tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full
- 3:21of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and
- 3:25Father, and with it we curse people who are made
- 3:28in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come
- 3:32blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things
- 3:37ought not be so. Does a spring... pour forth
- 3:43from the same opening both fresh and salt water?
- 3:47Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or
- 3:51a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt
- 3:55pond yield fresh water. Who is wise and understanding
- 4:00among you? By his good conduct let him show his
- 4:04works in the meekness of wisdom. If you have
- 4:10bitter jealousy, selfish ambition in your hearts,
- 4:13do not boast and be false to the truth. This
- 4:18is not the wisdom that comes down from above,
- 4:21but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where
- 4:25jealousy and selfish ambition exists, there will
- 4:28be dishonor and every vile practice. But the
- 4:32wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable,
- 4:36gentle. open to reason, full of mercy and good
- 4:41fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest
- 4:45of righteousness is sown in peace by those who
- 4:49make peace. It's a very important chapter. And
- 4:53it really does support very clearly what we're
- 4:56going to read next week in 1 Corinthians 3. So
- 5:00principle number one, what do we notice here?
- 5:03Bit for horses. Rudder for ships and the tongue
- 5:08for the mouth. Only one is a restless evil by
- 5:12which man cannot tame. It does not matter what
- 5:16you think. You cannot tame your own tongue. Okay?
- 5:21I want you to think about that. Because what
- 5:23James gives us in this discussion here in this
- 5:27chapter 3 is how the tongue is tamed and who
- 5:32tames the tongue. Okay? Proverbs 13, 3, 3. Whoever
- 5:37guards his mouth preserves his life. He who opens
- 5:41wide his lips comes to ruin. If you can close
- 5:45your mouth, you're going to be good. But if you
- 5:48open it wide, please know something will come
- 5:51out. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth
- 5:55speaks. Jesus makes this very clear. Okay. James
- 5:593, 1 through 5 says it this way. Not many of
- 6:01you should become teachers, my brothers, for
- 6:04you know that we who teach will be judged with
- 6:06greater strictness. It's one of the reasons why
- 6:09we as pastors and teachers must be very careful
- 6:14what we say. And even in the midst of that, even
- 6:20I am going to make mistakes. Okay. And he makes
- 6:24this clear because no one Can avoid that. But
- 6:30God will hold me. To higher accountability than
- 6:34you. For speaking. Because I teach the truth.
- 6:37My responsibility. For we all stumble in many
- 6:42ways. That's what he's saying. All of us do.
- 6:44Now understand that James is Jesus' brother.
- 6:48And his other brother is Jude. And so James is
- 6:51saying. We all stumble. If anyone does not stumble
- 6:55in what he says, he's a perfect man, able also
- 6:59to bridle his whole body. And what James is saying
- 7:02is no one can do that. But someone can for you.
- 7:06If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that
- 7:11they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as
- 7:14well. So there has to be something to intervene
- 7:18in order to control the horse. It's the bit.
- 7:23It's the bit. And the bit is the one that controls
- 7:27the horse. And what we're going to start to learn
- 7:30is there's something controlling our lives. Apart
- 7:34from Christ, this one muscle controls and guides
- 7:38our life. And that God has to be the bit. Okay?
- 7:43Now, look at ships also. Though they are also
- 7:48large and are driven by strong winds, they are
- 7:51guided by a very small rudder. wherever the will
- 7:54of the pilot directs. So in the same way that
- 7:57a rudder moves a ship wherever you want the ship
- 8:01to go, there is one who drives the ship. In the
- 8:05same way that there's one who controls the bit.
- 8:07But either way, if there is not one to control
- 8:11the bit or drive the ship, guess who's controlling
- 8:14your rudder? You are. We're not very good pilots,
- 8:19is the idea. So also the tongue is a small member,
- 8:24yet it boasts of great things. It boasts of great
- 8:28things. It loves to talk. It loves to talk. Second
- 8:32principle. The tongue is a matchstick. One wrong
- 8:36word can ignite an entire city on fire. One wrong
- 8:40word can ignite an entire city on fire. Proverbs
- 8:4318 .4. The words of a man's mouth are deep waters.
- 8:48The fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook. What
- 8:52is the fountain of wisdom? Christ. The word incarnate.
- 8:57God's wisdom is a bubbling brook. But our mouths
- 9:01are deep. Deep. In James 3, 5 through 6. How
- 9:08great a forest is set ablaze by such a small
- 9:11fire. And the tongue is a fire. You hear that?
- 9:16The tongue is a matchstick. It is a fire. A world
- 9:21of unrighteousness. That's cool how he uses this
- 9:25term. It's a world, it's a cosmos of unrighteousness.
- 9:31Like, think about that. It's like its own little
- 9:33world. And I'll be like, yeah? You need to be
- 9:37quiet. It's like its own little thing. It's just
- 9:41quiet. But it's a world, a cosmos of unrighteousness.
- 9:46The tongue is set among our members. Now get
- 9:51that. This little muscle that we talk with, that
- 9:55we taste with, we get to enjoy food with, that
- 9:58God had created for his own glory, is set among
- 10:02our members. And because of sin, stains the whole
- 10:07body. Setting on fire the entire course of life.
- 10:12And is set on fire by hell. That without Christ,
- 10:17our tongue is a representative of a very dark
- 10:21place. Now, number three. God designed the tongue
- 10:28to speak truth in life. God designed the tongue
- 10:32to speak truth in life. But by the corruption
- 10:34of sin, it can be used as a weapon of mass destruction.
- 10:39The tongue was designed to speak truth and life.
- 10:42Not my truth, his truth. But what happened? Sin
- 10:47happened. Adam sinned. And as a result, everything
- 10:52becomes corrupt. Everything becomes corrupt.
- 10:57Proverbs 18, 21. Death and life are in the power
- 11:02of the tongue. And those who love it will eat
- 11:05its fruits. Those who love it will eat its fruits.
- 11:08You will produce what you speak. In James 3,
- 11:127 through 12, for every kind of beast and bird,
- 11:17reptile and sea creature can be tamed and has
- 11:22been tamed by mankind. You're like, yeah, really?
- 11:25Yes. Think of the shark, right? Great white shark.
- 11:29You ever been to an aquarium? You ever see a
- 11:32great white shark or sharks in the aquarium?
- 11:35Would you think that we can tame a shark? You
- 11:38would think no. But guess what we do? Because
- 11:41as soon as you got that little fish and you're
- 11:43in the shark tank, you just go like this. They
- 11:47come walking or swimming. Not really walking.
- 11:49That'd be kind of scary. If they're walking,
- 11:51I'm out. What do they do? You just got that thing
- 11:54and they're like, yo, let's go. That's taming
- 11:57them. They know daddy got food or mommy, depending
- 12:00who's diving. They got food. They just bring
- 12:04it. But they can smell it. It doesn't matter.
- 12:08They know. You're going to feed them. That's
- 12:10a definitive. Sharks. But no human being can
- 12:17tame the tongue. Okay? That's a definitive. No
- 12:23one can tame the tongue. It is a restless. evil,
- 12:28full of deadly poison. With it, we bless our
- 12:31Lord and Father. And with it, we curse people
- 12:34who are made in the likeness of God. From the
- 12:38same mouth come blessing and cursing. And my
- 12:43brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does
- 12:47a spring pour forth out of the same opening fresh
- 12:52water and salt water? Can you get salt water
- 12:54from a freshwater pond? Can a fig tree, my brothers,
- 12:57bear olives? Can a sweet fruit tree bear bitter
- 13:02fruit? That's the idea here, isn't it? Why does
- 13:06he compare figs and olives? Sweet and bitter.
- 13:11And they're very similar when you look at the
- 13:13picture on your bulletin. That's one of the things
- 13:16that I was like, whoa, they are very similar
- 13:18looking. One's bigger than the other, but either
- 13:20way. Or can a grapevine produce figs? Can a grapevine
- 13:24produce a cluster of figs? No. Neither can a
- 13:29salt pond yield fresh water. What does he mean
- 13:33here? You are what you are. You are what you
- 13:36are. Either God will make you a new creature
- 13:39or you're not going to be a new creature. And
- 13:42the creature will produce what they are. Look
- 13:45what it says here. Those who claim the name of
- 13:48Christ must speak life and healing and are quick
- 13:53to avoid speaking evil. People who claim to be
- 13:56believers are quick to avoid evil and speaking
- 14:01evil. They speak life and healing. That doesn't
- 14:04mean they can't rebuke lovingly. Okay? But either
- 14:08way, their hope is through that process you go
- 14:12through the healing and then life becomes evident.
- 14:16Okay? Proverbs 10, 11 through 12. The mouth of
- 14:20the righteous is a fountain of life. Did you
- 14:24hear that? But the mouth of the wicked conceals
- 14:26violence. Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers
- 14:31all offenses. James 3, 13 through 18. He who
- 14:37is wise. Or who is wise and understanding among
- 14:41you? Here's the answer. You want the answer on
- 14:45how the tongue is tamed? The wisdom of God. Who
- 14:49is wise and understanding among you? God is.
- 14:53And who of God's people are understanding among
- 14:56you? Those who are God's people. Look what it
- 14:59says. By his conduct, let him show his works
- 15:03in the meekness of wisdom. There's the answer.
- 15:07In other words, if I am a believer, then my conduct
- 15:12and my speech are going to show the truth of
- 15:17the fruit of that wisdom. What is the fruit of
- 15:20the Spirit? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
- 15:24goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self -control.
- 15:28Verse 14, but if you have bitter jealousy or
- 15:31selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast.
- 15:38If you are a believer, then be true to the truth.
- 15:43Walk in the wisdom of God. Live upright before
- 15:47him and before others. Look what it says in verse
- 15:5015. This is not the wisdom that comes down from
- 15:54above. This type of lack of... of learning the
- 16:01wisdom of God, changing the mind so that what
- 16:05we think is what he wants us to think, you will
- 16:08only do what you believe and you will speak what
- 16:12is in the abundance of your heart. And the only
- 16:14way to change the abundance of your heart is
- 16:17for your mind to be changed. And the only way
- 16:18for your mind to be changed is to be a believer
- 16:21in Christ. There has to be a change to the creature.
- 16:26The creature must be changed because we learn,
- 16:29can a fig tree bear olives? No, it has to be
- 16:34an olive tree. So, look what it says. But this
- 16:38is earthly. This is worldly, is the idea here.
- 16:42This is how the world behaves in Acts. It's unspiritual,
- 16:46meaning it's not only corrupt, but it's carnal.
- 16:51It's different than the spiritual things. Set
- 16:54your mind on things above where Christ is seated.
- 16:57And it's demonic. What James is saying is not
- 17:02that you are being possessed by a demon, but
- 17:04it resembles evil and it's demon -like. This
- 17:07is what fallen angels do. For where jealousy
- 17:12and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder
- 17:16and every vile practice. In other words, you
- 17:20will see from the individual the fruit of that
- 17:24life. That's what he's saying here. But the wisdom
- 17:27from above, do you hear that? The wisdom from
- 17:31above is first pure, meaning immaculate. Then
- 17:36peaceable, meaning loving peace. Gentle, meaning
- 17:41fair and mild. Open to reason, meaning easily
- 17:46obeys and is compliant to the word of God. It
- 17:50is full of mercy, meaning kindness and goodwill.
- 17:53It's good fruits, meaning acts or works that
- 17:57come from the Spirit. It is impartial, meaning
- 18:00free from prejudice. And it is sincere, meaning
- 18:04genuine, no hypocrisy, of good character, no
- 18:09pretense or pride. Why? When a man is controlled
- 18:14by the wisdom of God, his tongue is tamed by
- 18:18the truth of the Scripture. And the harvest of
- 18:21righteousness is sown in peace. It is sown in
- 18:27the family and in the life of others. You make
- 18:29peace, harmony, tranquility among the brethren,
- 18:33especially the brethren. By those who make peace.
- 18:39As it depends upon you, be at peace with all
- 18:42men, the Bible says. Now, what should we do when
- 18:48we learn? The truths of the tongue and how we,
- 18:52how God manages and tames our tongue for us.
- 18:56He is the pilot to his word, his wisdom. Look
- 19:00what it says in James 4, 17. We'll start off
- 19:05in verse 16. You boast in your arrogance. All
- 19:11such boasting is evil. so whoever knows the right
- 19:15thing to do and fails to do it for him it is
- 19:20sin the scripture is clear on how we should behave
- 19:24and how we should love one another and how we
- 19:27should walk with one another very important because
- 19:32the reality is the world is watching and its
- 19:35perception of the church is how its people love
- 19:39and treat one another so I want to thank you.
- 19:43Think about it. Go home. We're going to be doing
- 19:451 Corinthians 3 next week. And kind of capstone
- 19:49this whole thing. Because it's part of the problem
- 19:52in Corinth. I follow Paul. I follow Paulos. And
- 19:55Paul's like, just keep your mouth shut. You're
- 19:57getting yourself in trouble. So we'll talk a
- 19:59little bit about that, okay? Father, I want to
- 20:01thank you so much for your goodness and faithfulness.
- 20:03Thank you, Lord, for your word. Lord, I pray
- 20:06that you are honored and glorified. Help us to
- 20:08look and reflect through the word as we depend
- 20:11upon you to use our tongue for your glory and
- 20:15that you tame our tongue through your wisdom
- 20:17and that the words of God, the words of Christ
- 20:20be richly on our lips. To you be honor and glory
- 20:23forever. In Jesus' name, amen.
