Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another additional Cardinal territory. Jim
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hayes along with Lance Lance. Before we start, I've been
- 0:14Speaker 1: getting some feedback about the beard. People love it. People
- 0:18Speaker 1: want to know if you're going to grow it out
- 0:19Speaker 1: for the entire summer. Please give us an update.
- 0:23Speaker 2: You know, I just haven't haven't kind of haircut yet,
- 0:26Speaker 2: So whenever I get over it, I'll just go do it.
- 0:29Speaker 2: But right now it's doing its thing. It looks good.
- 0:32Speaker 2: It looks good, all right.
- 0:34Speaker 1: So the Cardinals were in Kansas City facing a Royals
- 0:37Speaker 1: team not the greatest. They dropped two or two of three,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and the pitching staff gets hit around a little bit.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The Cards home now to take on the Diamondbacks and
- 0:49Speaker 1: the return of Nolan Ronado. I want to ask you
- 0:52Speaker 1: about what happened in Kansas City. So Libby lasted an
- 0:56Speaker 1: inning in two third, give seven runs I think five,
- 0:58Speaker 1: earned dust, and got hit around. He lasted only a
- 1:02Speaker 1: couple of innings. Let's start with Libby. Like I understand
- 1:05Speaker 1: that there are ups and downs as a major league starter.
- 1:09Speaker 2: He's in a rough patch.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Now, what do you see him from Libby and what
- 1:13Speaker 1: are your hopes for him to shake this option.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean you, like you said, you're gonna go
- 1:19Speaker 2: through rough stretches. The problem is when you start, when
- 1:24Speaker 2: you start letting those creep in to multiple starts and
- 1:27Speaker 2: stuff like that. I think Dustin's been throwing the ball
- 1:30Speaker 2: so well you think, all right, hey, you know, don't
- 1:33Speaker 2: let that turn into multiple starts. Figure out how to
- 1:35Speaker 2: correct whatever the issues were last start, and then get going.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Libby I think is searching a little bit, and he's
- 1:41Speaker 2: been kind of searching at times throughout the year this
- 1:44Speaker 2: year when I'll be going smooth through four or five
- 1:47Speaker 2: innings and then next thing, you know, he gives up,
- 1:49Speaker 2: you know, a big inning and stuff like that. So
- 1:52Speaker 2: I think the main thing that I took out of
- 1:54Speaker 2: my things when I struggled a little bit that could
- 1:57Speaker 2: help is simplifying things. Simplifying needs spatter each inning him him,
- 2:03Speaker 2: and you know, Dusty Blake can try to slow the
- 2:06Speaker 2: process down. I think when you try to do too much,
- 2:09Speaker 2: or you're searching and stuff like that, the game speeds
- 2:11Speaker 2: up on you because there's too much going on in
- 2:14Speaker 2: your brain. So get to the bullpen. Simplify. Maybe all right,
- 2:18Speaker 2: let's get the three pitch mix and let's simplify those
- 2:20Speaker 2: things to righty lefty where we want to put them,
- 2:24Speaker 2: what we're trying to do to each hitter, and try
- 2:27Speaker 2: to slow the game down so there's not too much
- 2:29Speaker 2: going on while you're out there, so don't snowball on you.
- 2:32Speaker 2: So I would say that's probably the main thing right now,
- 2:35Speaker 2: is trying to make it take a step back and
- 2:36Speaker 2: simplify it so you can go out there and just
- 2:38Speaker 2: try to execute one hitter at a time and get
- 2:41Speaker 2: three outside of time, and then worry about the next
- 2:43Speaker 2: inning and the next inning.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Every picture goes through one of those starts where everything
- 2:49Speaker 1: is a rocket off the bat. Happens to broadcasters, happens,
- 2:53Speaker 1: I guess in every job, right you just have a
- 2:56Speaker 1: day where you just don't have it.
- 2:57Speaker 2: But if you're a pitcher starting picture of.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Major League Baseball and like you guys have all been there,
- 3:03Speaker 1: and it's early in a game, and you are already
- 3:08Speaker 1: giving up home runs, even loud outs, but you're getting crushed,
- 3:13Speaker 1: what's that It's gotta it's gotta feel like you're alone
- 3:15Speaker 1: on an island. What's that feeling like?
- 3:18Speaker 2: It's you feel like there's nothing you can do to
- 3:23Speaker 2: miss a barrel and you're like, what do I throw?
- 3:25Speaker 2: And then next thing you know, you start walking people
- 3:28Speaker 2: this and that, and you just find yourself in a
- 3:30Speaker 2: lost feeling of hopelessness because you're like, anything I try
- 3:36Speaker 2: is not working. They're hitting everything hard, and you's it
- 3:40Speaker 2: turns into hey, I hope they just hit it at
- 3:44Speaker 2: somebody so I can I can get it out. You know,
- 3:47Speaker 2: that's a and it's a very it's a terrible feeling.
- 3:50Speaker 2: And it's happened to every picture that's ever thrown a
- 3:53Speaker 2: ball in their life at some point, the great ones,
- 3:55Speaker 2: it might have happened once once in their life, but
- 3:59Speaker 2: you know everyone else that happens once a year. I
- 4:01Speaker 2: feel like once or twice a year, you'll have a
- 4:03Speaker 2: start where it's like I cannot get anyone out, and
- 4:07Speaker 2: I do not know how to give anyone out. Everything
- 4:09Speaker 2: I try is going in the opposite direction or doing
- 4:12Speaker 2: the opposite it's supposed to do, and I just keep
- 4:14Speaker 2: finding barrels, and you know, you just try to survive
- 4:18Speaker 2: those days.
- 4:20Speaker 1: With Dustin May, it was odd because he was coming
- 4:23Speaker 1: off a one hit, complete game shutout. He had a
- 4:27Speaker 1: couple of rough starts just at the beginning of the
- 4:29Speaker 1: season and since then, I mean it's been quality start,
- 4:32Speaker 1: lights out, lights out, quality start. He's been really good.
- 4:36Speaker 1: What can happen after you have like this, possibly best
- 4:41Speaker 1: start in your career, and you take them ound again
- 4:45Speaker 1: and again. The Royals are hardly murderers? Wrote What goes on? Mentally?
- 4:49Speaker 1: I mean, are you are you still thinking about that?
- 4:51Speaker 1: Or how does that work?
- 4:54Speaker 3: No?
- 4:55Speaker 2: I think you just saw what we've always talked about.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Baseball even itself out. Right, You go nine innings of
- 5:02Speaker 2: one hit ball, and then the next inning next time,
- 5:04Speaker 2: you don't get through the third, and next thing you know,
- 5:06Speaker 2: you look up. You've had eleven innings of how many
- 5:09Speaker 2: or earned runs? Right, So it evens itself out. Unfortunately,
- 5:12Speaker 2: you just hope that your bad ones aren't you figure
- 5:16Speaker 2: out how to salvage them to save seasons. I remember
- 5:19Speaker 2: Kyle Lewis told me one time. He's like, if you're
- 5:21Speaker 2: going to have a bad one, figure out how to
- 5:22Speaker 2: get through six and make it only four or five
- 5:24Speaker 2: earned runs. You can't go, you know, two innings and
- 5:27Speaker 2: you can't give up more than six or it just
- 5:29Speaker 2: kills you. You're gonna have those days, and it's just
- 5:33Speaker 2: I don't think there's any effect of the last start.
- 5:37Speaker 2: There might be you know, a complete game is a
- 5:39Speaker 2: little different. You know, maybe is in between routine was
- 5:42Speaker 2: thrown off? You know, he might have been a little sore,
- 5:46Speaker 2: you know, wins the last time he's throw nine innings
- 5:49Speaker 2: in a game. You know, you know what did he
- 5:51Speaker 2: was he able to do in between starts? And like
- 5:54Speaker 2: I said, did the routine get thrown off? Was he
- 5:56Speaker 2: you know, still kind of barkie from the last start
- 5:59Speaker 2: because of all the you know, because of nine innings.
- 6:01Speaker 2: So you just never know. When you throw a lot
- 6:04Speaker 2: of innings and a lot of pitches, usually that next
- 6:06Speaker 2: ones might not be as sharp and then you just
- 6:08Speaker 2: try to get through it. And unfortunately he wasn't able
- 6:10Speaker 2: to have a call he start that next one, especially
- 6:12Speaker 2: when you had a and early lead too. I'm sure
- 6:15Speaker 2: he's kicking himself over that one too, because when its
- 6:18Speaker 2: team puts up early runs for you, you try to
- 6:20Speaker 2: get make sure you get through the sixth and get
- 6:23Speaker 2: through so you can get a win. And he wasn't
- 6:25Speaker 2: able to do that.
- 6:27Speaker 1: So the Cardinal pitching staff gave up thirty runs over
- 6:30Speaker 1: three games in Kansas City, but to the Cards credit
- 6:35Speaker 1: the offense was busy too. The offense started hitting home runs.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Let's talk about JJ Weatherhole because we don't sometimes talk
- 6:42Speaker 1: about him maybe as much as we should. This guy
- 6:46Speaker 1: had a homer one way, you know, to right and
- 6:49Speaker 1: a homer to left or forget the order, playing like
- 6:52Speaker 1: gold glove second base, and you kind of forget that
- 6:56Speaker 1: this guy is a rookie. This guy going into the season,
- 6:59Speaker 1: there's only question marks. You know, is he ready to go?
- 7:02Speaker 1: Is he a second basement? And now you just look
- 7:05Speaker 1: at this guy as really one of the better players
- 7:08Speaker 1: in the league. What's the most impressive thing you've seen
- 7:11Speaker 1: from JJ Weatherholt.
- 7:14Speaker 2: I think the main thing you said right away is
- 7:16Speaker 2: you forget that he's a rookie. So when you have
- 7:18Speaker 2: that feeling or people see you as an oh, yeah,
- 7:22Speaker 2: he is a rookie, after remind yourself he is, that's
- 7:24Speaker 2: the most impressive thing because this game is hard, but
- 7:27Speaker 2: he's able to come in, He's been able to do
- 7:29Speaker 2: the work and not one side of the ball is
- 7:31Speaker 2: affecting the other if anything goes on. So he shows
- 7:35Speaker 2: poise and shows the signs of being a season vet already,
- 7:39Speaker 2: you know, and he's not even halfway through is his
- 7:41Speaker 2: rookie year, So I think you're seeing the makings of
- 7:44Speaker 2: somebody that's going to be really good for a long time.
- 7:48Speaker 2: You know there's gonna come, there's gonna be times when
- 7:49Speaker 2: you're gonna have some ups and downs in this game.
- 7:51Speaker 2: But he seems to have a good head on his shoulders,
- 7:54Speaker 2: the right work ethic, and the right ability to lock
- 7:56Speaker 2: in no matter what's going on on either side of
- 7:59Speaker 2: the ball to help the team win if one side's
- 8:01Speaker 2: not doing what it needs to. So it's impressive. He's
- 8:05Speaker 2: showing the reason why he got drafted as how he
- 8:07Speaker 2: is as high as he did, the reason why he's
- 8:09Speaker 2: the highest highest prospect in the organization because the kid
- 8:12Speaker 2: can play. But he also has a good maturity to
- 8:15Speaker 2: him that is awesome to see. And you're seeing a
- 8:18Speaker 2: guy that's kind of just saying, hey, i might be
- 8:20Speaker 2: a rookie, but I can play baseball and I'm not
- 8:22Speaker 2: afraid of anything. And that's that's always fun to see
- 8:24Speaker 2: as a as a fan, but also as a as
- 8:27Speaker 2: a former player when you see rookies come up and
- 8:29Speaker 2: take take the league by soarm at school.
- 8:32Speaker 1: And that brings us to our daily Dingers segment brought
- 8:36Speaker 1: to you by FanDuel.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Nailed it all right.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I didn't even look at the pitching matchups yet for
- 8:44Speaker 1: this series. I'm just gonna go with JJ again because
- 8:47Speaker 1: he's on a role. So I'm going JJ Weatherold who
- 8:51Speaker 1: you got.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Well, I feel like you teed that up for yourself
- 8:54Speaker 2: right before you did the Daily Inger, so it was
- 8:57Speaker 2: pretty obvious where you are going. But I'm going to
- 8:59Speaker 2: go I think I think Kelly Stone for the for
- 9:03Speaker 2: the dback, so I'm gonna go Burley. I'm gonna go Burli,
- 9:06Speaker 2: Burley scoop and a cutter or a sinker that is
- 9:09Speaker 2: down middle.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Now, if you want to swing for the fences, you

- 9:47Speaker 1: All right, Welcome back, to Cardinal territory. So we talked
- 9:50Speaker 1: about this just before the break. The Cardinals get hit
- 9:55Speaker 1: a lot, an awful lot. They've been hit fifty four times.
- 9:59Speaker 1: That's tops and all the Major League Baseball. Vonn Herrera
- 10:03Speaker 1: has been hit twenty one times. He look, he's got
- 10:07Speaker 1: a very good sense of where the strike zone is.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Might lean in a little bit, but twenty one times, Lance,
- 10:13Speaker 1: Do you think that this is just happenstance or do
- 10:17Speaker 1: you think this is other teams going, yeah, we can
- 10:20Speaker 1: push them off the plate by doing that.
- 10:25Speaker 2: You know, I lean towards it's just kind of it
- 10:28Speaker 2: just happens. But I also think there's times where when
- 10:32Speaker 2: you are a young team, and then you're a young
- 10:34Speaker 2: team on both sides of the plate, maybe the other
- 10:37Speaker 2: team is not worried about anybody doing anything in return,
- 10:44Speaker 2: if that makes sense. When you have different starters that
- 10:48Speaker 2: might be known to do the things they need to
- 10:51Speaker 2: do to make sure that you don't just hit people
- 10:53Speaker 2: without any consequences, the other team has a tendency not
- 10:57Speaker 2: to throw the ball in there without care either, So
- 11:00Speaker 2: I think it's a little bit of both. It's a
- 11:02Speaker 2: young team, some guys who like the ball, out over,
- 11:05Speaker 2: so you have to pitch him in, but you're pitching
- 11:08Speaker 2: in without any care if you do hit him in
- 11:11Speaker 2: a sense, and then there's no really worry of retaliation
- 11:17Speaker 2: because of the youngness of the pitching on the cardinal
- 11:22Speaker 2: side to do anything to cause fear in the other
- 11:26Speaker 2: starter and his guy getting hit and them coming and
- 11:29Speaker 2: talk to him. So I would say it's a little
- 11:31Speaker 2: bit of both.
- 11:33Speaker 1: In other words of lance Lynn, we're currently a cardinal,
- 11:36Speaker 1: there would be some guys wearing it.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Is that what you're saying. I will tell you if
- 11:41Speaker 2: John Lackey was a cardinal, for sure. And I'm going
- 11:44Speaker 2: off of one thing that I ever saw happen that
- 11:47Speaker 2: I thought was the greatest thing of all time. Corey
- 11:50Speaker 2: Kleeber hit Matt Holliday in the first inning of the
- 11:52Speaker 2: first game of the series in Cleveland. Matt had like
- 11:55Speaker 2: he couldn't even straighten his elbow. It was huge. So
- 11:58Speaker 2: he like, I don't know if you've got play the
- 12:00Speaker 2: next two days. Next inning, Lackey just and he was
- 12:04Speaker 2: out for the game, right, So Lackey smokes, I don't
- 12:08Speaker 2: remember who it was, but he drilled them. Nick Swisher's
- 12:11Speaker 2: on the bench coin it wasn't on purpose, and Lackey
- 12:15Speaker 2: looks at him from the mountain goes, I don't give
- 12:17Speaker 2: a fuck. My three year old hitting left fielder is
- 12:20Speaker 2: out of the game. Somebody was getting one and Swish
- 12:23Speaker 2: goes fair. That was it. So and then nobody got
- 12:27Speaker 2: hit the rest of the game and the series. Nobody
- 12:29Speaker 2: gonna hit the rest of the series. So it was
- 12:31Speaker 2: kind of like, you're gonna throw in there without care,
- 12:33Speaker 2: We're gonna we're coming back and it was done right.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Then there is something to be said about players kind
- 12:38Speaker 1: of policing themselves. But if you're only marvel, I think
- 12:42Speaker 1: also it's it's a it's a balancing.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Act, right you.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Look, every manager will say take care of business. I
- 12:49Speaker 1: know LaRussa did it too, but there has to be
- 12:52Speaker 1: the right time. You're dealing with young pitchers. It could
- 12:55Speaker 1: totally sidetrack a young picture, right, so there's a balancing
- 12:59Speaker 1: act for him manager who might want to send a
- 13:02Speaker 1: message to the other team.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Right Yeah. I think in this day and age too,
- 13:06Speaker 2: you can't really do it either. So you gotta be smart.
- 13:11Speaker 2: You also have to let you know, you gotta let
- 13:15Speaker 2: your guys know you have your back. You kind of
- 13:17Speaker 2: gotta let hey, you know, we're tired of seeing somebody
- 13:19Speaker 2: get hit this or that, you know, herrara with that
- 13:22Speaker 2: many ahvps already. I mean, it was kind of similar
- 13:25Speaker 2: to what what Contreras had to deal with last year.
- 13:28Speaker 2: So you kind of go go back and look and
- 13:31Speaker 2: see if there's any bad intent or if there's any Hey,
- 13:37Speaker 2: these guys are just throwing in with no care in
- 13:39Speaker 2: the world. And if that's the case too, you kind
- 13:42Speaker 2: of let you kind of start chirping at the catcher,
- 13:44Speaker 2: which is the number one thing, and then that will
- 13:46Speaker 2: get back to the manager, and then you let everybody know, Hey,
- 13:49Speaker 2: if you're going to come in there with no with
- 13:51Speaker 2: no care in the world, then hey, you're your best
- 13:53Speaker 2: hitter is going to have to have to worry about
- 13:55Speaker 2: the same thing. You're not trying to hit them, but
- 13:58Speaker 2: you're also trying to say, hey, if I throw one
- 14:01Speaker 2: underneath your hands and right around the chin area, that's
- 14:05Speaker 2: because you guys are thrown in there with with no
- 14:07Speaker 2: care in the world either. So if you're not gonna
- 14:09Speaker 2: have care, we're not gonna have care, if that's if
- 14:11Speaker 2: that makes sense.
- 14:13Speaker 1: And there's also pictures that make a living pitching inside.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I know you were not afraid at all to go inside.
- 14:20Speaker 1: If a picture doesn't establish it, I'll come inside. Even
- 14:23Speaker 1: if I got to buzz a tower. It's gonna be
- 14:26Speaker 1: a long afternoon for him.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Yeah, And there's ways to go in there where you're
- 14:30Speaker 2: not gonna hurt anybody and stuff like that. Unfortunately, I've
- 14:32Speaker 2: hit guys and broke their hands, and it's the worst
- 14:33Speaker 2: feeling that you can have as a picture is when
- 14:35Speaker 2: you knock someone out because you know they're trying to
- 14:38Speaker 2: feed their family, they're trying to put up their numbers.
- 14:41Speaker 2: So my goal every time I went in there was
- 14:43Speaker 2: it was, you know, you're trying to stay below kind
- 14:46Speaker 2: of like below the nipples. There's really no other way
- 14:48Speaker 2: to say it. And you're trying to stay away from
- 14:50Speaker 2: hands and necks and heads, but you're trying to move hips.
- 14:53Speaker 2: You want to get that lean back so they can't
- 14:55Speaker 2: lean out over on you. So but nowadays people are
- 14:59Speaker 2: I mean Ivan's hands are and whole bodies or whole
- 15:02Speaker 2: arms over the plate. So if he's getting anything in
- 15:06Speaker 2: the elbow, if damn near could be on the strike zone,
- 15:08Speaker 2: technically it could be on the plate. So that's a
- 15:11Speaker 2: hard one to judge. But when you know you're really
- 15:14Speaker 2: worry about guys if they start, if they're really getting
- 15:16Speaker 2: hit up top of the head and stuff like that,
- 15:18Speaker 2: are they diving or is it just Hey, we're throwing
- 15:20Speaker 2: up and in because we don't care. So there's definitely
- 15:24Speaker 2: a balancing act here.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Do you ever hit a guy that you didn't mean
- 15:28Speaker 1: to and they assumed you're Lanceolin he did it on
- 15:32Speaker 1: purpose and there was a little back and forth.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Uh No, I mean, ever anyone that I had that
- 15:40Speaker 2: I hit and didn't mean to, you know, I let
- 15:42Speaker 2: him know pretty quick. If you knew, you know that
- 15:45Speaker 2: I was. I was No, I mean, I am who
- 15:47Speaker 2: I am. I was, you know, a bulldog type on
- 15:51Speaker 2: the mound. But when when I fucked up, I let
- 15:53Speaker 2: you know real quick. Hey, that's on me. So if
- 15:55Speaker 2: I didn't tell you that and you wanted to start tripping,
- 15:57Speaker 2: then you knew what it was on purpose.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Crats mint mobile plans still just fifteen bucks a month and.
- 16:06Speaker 2: You're getting a ton from that fifteen dollars. That's right.

- 17:00Speaker 1: The return of Nolan Arnatto He's with the DBAX comes
- 17:03Speaker 1: back to Saint Louis, thirty five years old, and the
- 17:07Speaker 1: numbers still really aren't Nolan numbers eight homers to thirty
- 17:12Speaker 1: something batting average. I mean again, he's only thirty five.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Did he lose something along the way or what happened,
- 17:20Speaker 1: because there was a time he was not only dominant defensively,
- 17:24Speaker 1: but also one of the most dominant third baseman and
- 17:27Speaker 1: all of baseball.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I think over a time in this game, it's hard
- 17:32Speaker 2: to put up great numbers for twenty straight years. Right
- 17:36Speaker 2: you're looking at his first ten years in the league.
- 17:38Speaker 2: He's he's a Hall of Famer just on the you
- 17:40Speaker 2: know what, nine straight goal gloves he wanted to start
- 17:42Speaker 2: his career. So you're looking at a guy that, you know,
- 17:47Speaker 2: the game's changed a little bit since he came in.
- 17:50Speaker 2: His swing and hitting defenses, I think it's still there
- 17:54Speaker 2: for the most part. He's probably not getting graded like
- 17:56Speaker 2: he used to because he doesn't have to leave his
- 17:59Speaker 2: feet to get the balls and stuff like that, and
- 18:00Speaker 2: that's how you get graded higher as a as an
- 18:02Speaker 2: elite defender, and he doesn't have to do that, So
- 18:05Speaker 2: it kind of makes him look worse than I think
- 18:07Speaker 2: that he is. Offensively, he was a real drive through it,
- 18:12Speaker 2: down through it type of guy. And the games change,
- 18:14Speaker 2: velocities are higher, they pitch up in the zone more.
- 18:17Speaker 2: It's just and when you get older, when you start
- 18:20Speaker 2: diving and stuff, your bat gets a little slower. Hollywood
- 18:23Speaker 2: always talk about, you know, you'd have to do some
- 18:26Speaker 2: things to not get beat up as much, especially with
- 18:29Speaker 2: with velocity the older he got. I think that I'm
- 18:32Speaker 2: hoping that he's, you know, going through that phase where
- 18:37Speaker 2: it's going to be, you know, maybe not as up
- 18:39Speaker 2: to his standards for a year or two, and then
- 18:41Speaker 2: maybe he can fix something to really not dive. And
- 18:45Speaker 2: because he was so good at just get catching the
- 18:47Speaker 2: ball up front and getting down through it. Nowadays, when
- 18:49Speaker 2: you do that with this high velocity, the balls beat
- 18:52Speaker 2: you up and you just can't you can't quite get
- 18:54Speaker 2: to him up at the top of the zone. So
- 18:56Speaker 2: I think there's a little bit of mechanics that he's
- 18:59Speaker 2: going to have to change to become a lead again,
- 19:01Speaker 2: just because how much he's getting beat up in the
- 19:03Speaker 2: top of the zone on the balls he used to crush.
- 19:06Speaker 1: When he was in Saint Louis, there was some like
- 19:10Speaker 1: quiet murmuring that he wasn't really connected with his teammates.
- 19:15Speaker 1: My impression him he was a total professional, and he
- 19:19Speaker 1: was one of those guys that I mean, he'd always
- 19:22Speaker 1: have a bat in his hand, he was always preoccupied
- 19:25Speaker 1: with his daily prep. But I just thought he was
- 19:28Speaker 1: a total pro. I mean, you've seen it. Tell me
- 19:31Speaker 1: what he's like around the clubhouse.
- 19:34Speaker 2: No, I thought he was awesome. He was everything that
- 19:36Speaker 2: I expected kN be and hurr. He was great teammate,
- 19:39Speaker 2: took care of the young guys. I think the number
- 19:42Speaker 2: one thing that people don't are that people, if they
- 19:44Speaker 2: had anything bad is say about him is he was
- 19:46Speaker 2: still locked into his routine every day. That It's not
- 19:50Speaker 2: that he didn't talk to anyone and wasn't there for anybody.
- 19:53Speaker 2: It's like, hey, I'm in my routine. I can help
- 19:56Speaker 2: when when I can and do the things I can.
- 19:58Speaker 2: And also if he as to talk to you or
- 20:01Speaker 2: if you, you know, for the younger guys, was trying
- 20:04Speaker 2: to engage with you and you didn't seem to want
- 20:08Speaker 2: to have that engagement. He wasn't going to force that
- 20:11Speaker 2: upon you either. So you know, he had his own
- 20:14Speaker 2: routine and he's locked into it. He helped the guys
- 20:16Speaker 2: who I'm gonna say wanted help right that that came
- 20:20Speaker 2: to him, we're looking for it. Anyone who didn't engage
- 20:23Speaker 2: with him, he was like, well, I guess you're not interested.
- 20:26Speaker 2: You know, he would say as hello as he was
- 20:27Speaker 2: nice to everybody and all that, but the you know,
- 20:30Speaker 2: some guys, some young guys come in and think they
- 20:32Speaker 2: have it figured out, and no one's not. If you,
- 20:35Speaker 2: you know, tell him you've got to figure it out,
- 20:37Speaker 2: he's not gonna he's not going to uh, you know,
- 20:40Speaker 2: he's not gonna. I guess it's not that it's not
- 20:43Speaker 2: going to take the time. He's gonna let you do
- 20:44Speaker 2: your thing. He's not going to force anything upon you.
- 20:47Speaker 2: So maybe that was people thinking he was disengaged, but
- 20:50Speaker 2: I think more so was Hey, my guy said that
- 20:52Speaker 2: he was good to go, so you know, if he
- 20:54Speaker 2: needs me, he'll come to me, you know.
- 20:57Speaker 1: There was also that Goldie is a guy who doesn't
- 21:00Speaker 1: say much leads. By example, I'd see him in the
- 21:02Speaker 1: batting cage talking to the young guys. They used to
- 21:05Speaker 1: say that about Holiday. Doesn't say much leads Mike. I'd
- 21:09Speaker 1: watch him chirping nonsop once in a while. The narrative
- 21:13Speaker 1: you get about leadership or clubhouse dynamics isn't actually true.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Isn't that the case?
- 21:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that you've seen it long enough, and
- 21:24Speaker 2: you've been in clubhouses. Sometimes the guy that's the media
- 21:27Speaker 2: darling isn't the leader and the person that you think
- 21:30Speaker 2: he is to the clubhouse. He's just some guys like cameras,
- 21:34Speaker 2: and some guys like to talk and do all this
- 21:36Speaker 2: and they don't even speak to their teammates. Other guys
- 21:38Speaker 2: don't talk to media at all because you know, the
- 21:41Speaker 2: media doesn't matter to them. But they're the best teammates
- 21:44Speaker 2: and the best people at helping guys out and being
- 21:46Speaker 2: there for each other and taking care of each other
- 21:48Speaker 2: than anybody. So I think you can get a false
- 21:53Speaker 2: false thought on a lot of different people a lot
- 21:55Speaker 2: of different ways. It depends on how they want to
- 21:57Speaker 2: be portrayed and what they care about.
- 22:00Speaker 1: There, because a lot of guys when the meet is
- 22:02Speaker 1: in the clubhouse don't necessarily want to be in their lance.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Good stuff, we appreciate it. I think the beard looks beautiful.
- 22:08Speaker 1: I want you to keep it going. Okay, let it go,
- 22:11Speaker 1: just let it go.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Keep it going, all right, sounds good?
- 22:15Speaker 1: All right, that's gonna do it for the That's gonna
- 22:19Speaker 1: do it for this edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Boy. I need a reset.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Hopefully the next edition won't suck and I'll be able
- 22:26Speaker 1: to speak. We'll see you then
