- 1:53again so you can enjoy this very creepy episode.
- 2:02Our story begins long before the legend ever took shape.
- 2:07In 1884, Old Alton Bridge was constructed as a one lane iron
- 2:13Truss bridge spanning Hickory Creek in Denton County.
- 2:19Designed by the King Iron Bridge Manufacturing Company, it
- 2:23connected the city of Denton with the now abandoned town of
- 2:28Alton. Alton, once a county seat in the
- 2:32mid 1800s, faded into obscurity after just a few years.
- 2:38It was a short lived frontier town that saw the rise and fall
- 2:42of local politics before vanishing all that remains
- 2:47today. Our cemetery.
- 2:50Some scattered historical records and this rusting
- 2:53monument to a forgotten era. The bridge was once a critical
- 2:59connection between Denton and other communities supporting
- 3:04wagon and later automobile traffic.
- 3:08It was narrow, too narrow for two cars to cross
- 3:12simultaneously, so drivers were instructed to honk their horns
- 3:17before entering. This quirk would later evolve
- 3:20into part of the ritual, honking, knocking, and calling
- 3:26out for something unseen. By the 1990's, the bridge showed
- 3:33its age. A modern concrete bridge was
- 3:36built nearby, rerouting traffic and sealing the fate of Old
- 3:42Alton Bridge. It was closed to vehicles in
- 3:452001 and preserved as a pedestrian crossing, serving as
- 3:51a historical landmark and a quiet footpath for nature
- 3:56enthusiasts. But as the road grew still,
- 4:00something ancient stirred beneath the iron.
- 4:05Whispers, sightings and stories began to spread louder, darker,
- 4:13and more frequent. Something was waiting.
- 4:19The story that gave the bridge its infamous nickname begins
- 4:23with tragedy and hate. According to local legend, in
- 4:28the 1930s, an African American goat farmer named Oscar Washburn
- 4:35lived near the bridge. He was known for the quality of
- 4:39his livestock, his products, and the integrity of his business.
- 4:45Proud of his work, he posted a wooden sign on the bridge that
- 4:49read this way to the Goat man. But success in that time in that
- 4:56place came with danger. Washburn's prosperity and
- 5:00defiance of social norms drew the attention of local alleged
- 5:05members of the Ku Klux Klan. 1 summer night, they crossed the
- 5:11bridge without headlights, stalked the area, and then
- 5:16stormed his home. Although Washburn fought back as
- 5:21hard as he could, he was outnumbered.
- 5:25They dragged him to the bridge, tied a noose around his neck and
- 5:30threw him over the side. Expecting a series of struggled
- 5:35gasps, they instead heard nothing.
- 5:40When they looked over the edge, Washburn was nowhere to be
- 5:44found. No splash, no thrashing, just an
- 5:49empty robe swaying in the breeze.
- 5:54Panicked, the mob returned to his property and frantically
- 5:58searched for him, but their efforts were ultimately
- 6:02fruitless. However, inside the house
- 6:06resided Washburn's wife and children.
- 6:11Unable to carry out their original mission, they instead
- 6:15turned their hateful energy towards his family.
- 6:19Although details are hazy at best, they somehow were able to
- 6:24lock them inside the house by barricading them and with the
- 6:28strike of a flame, lit the home on fire.
- 6:32Within minutes, Washburn's family's screams were
- 6:36extinguished as the home burnt to embers.
- 6:41The once proud farmer, Oscar Washburn, was never seen again.
- 6:47However, something else, something unearthly, seemed to
- 6:52take his place. Witnesses soon began to report a
- 6:57terrifying creature lurking near the bridge, a being with the
- 7:02body of a man and the head of a goat, eyes glowing red, hooved
- 7:10feet stomping across the bridge in the dead of night.
- 7:15They said he was a spirit of vengeance, a soul wronged by
- 7:20evil returned to punish the wicked.
- 7:24But not everyone agrees on the origin.
- 7:28Another story stretches even further back to the 1860s.
- 7:33During the chaos of the Civil War, a man named Jack Kendall,
- 7:38possibly at that time a freed man, was lynched by a group of
- 7:43outlaws. Upon the gruesome act, the ropes
- 7:48severed his head, which plunged into the waters below.
- 7:54Moments later, the body rose, resurrected by dark forces.
- 8:01Kendall, or what became of him, rather than searched and found a
- 8:06suitable replacement for his head, he found severed and then
- 8:12placed the head of a goat upon his neck.
- 8:17From that day forward, the area was considered cursed.
- 8:22Some believe this earlier entity fused with Oscar Washburn
- 8:26spirit. Others believe the Goat Man is
- 8:30something older still, something demonic.
- 8:35Whether man, myth, or monster, the Goat Man's story does not
- 8:40end in the past. It continues to this very day.
- 8:46The stories began as whispers, then screams.
- 8:51Teenagers dared each other to visit at midnight, couples
- 8:56parked nearby only to flee in terror.
- 9:01Paranormal investigators brought their cameras, their meters,
- 9:06their courage, and still they too ran.
- 9:11Some reports seeing a tall, muscular figure covered in dark
- 9:16fur with long twisted horns. Others described glowing red
- 9:22eyes staring from the tree line. Visitors hear phantom hoof beats
- 9:28clattering across the wooden bridge, sometimes fast,
- 9:33sometimes slow, as if something is stalking them unseen.
- 9:39Hands tug at clothing, claw marks appear on backs and hair
- 9:45stands up on end. Breaths have even been known to
- 9:50fog in the summer heat. One woman said she heard her
- 9:55name whispered in her ear, only to turn and find no one behind
- 10:00her. Another man found his phone
- 10:03camera disabled when he tried to record, and when he finally
- 10:08left, his footage was overwritten by static.
- 10:14Multiple Evps, otherwise known as electronic voice phenomena in
- 10:19what they've captured is disturbing.
- 10:23From growling voices saying come back to crying children, to
- 10:29women sobbing, and even what has sounded like a goat screaming in
- 10:36agony. There are many rituals to
- 10:39supposedly summon the goat man, but this is one of the most
- 10:44infamous. Upon visiting the bridge, one
- 10:48must knock three times on the steel rails, say his name, and
- 10:55then wait. Some say the air changes, the
- 10:59temperature drops, others say nothing happens at all and tell
- 11:06their home. 1 Teen reported seeing hoof prints in her
- 11:10driveway the next morning. Another said she was followed by
- 11:16a horned shadow. For weeks, she'd wake up
- 11:20screaming. Scratches also appeared on her
- 11:25arms. Paranormal teams have
- 11:28experienced battery drains, unexplained interference and
- 11:34equipment malfunctions. Some refused to return after
- 11:39what they saw. There is another entity that has
- 11:44been seen at the bridge as well, certainly at this point, a
- 11:48lesser known figure. The woman in white as she is
- 11:53called, is a translucent figure that is sometimes seen crying
- 11:58beside the bridge. Some say that she's Washburn's
- 12:02wife, still searching for her lost children for all of
- 12:08eternity. When approached, she disappears,
- 12:12or worse, she screams in your face.
- 12:18And then there are the missing visitors who have vanished.
- 12:23Cars have been found empty there, phones that have been
- 12:27left recording but with no sign of their owners, and footprints
- 12:34that stop in the middle of the bridge.
- 12:37Whether goat man or a ghost, something lurks there and this
- 12:43something does not want to be disturbed.
- 12:48While the legend terrifies, real events near the bridge have
- 12:52raised deeper concerns. In 2018, a 17 year old named
- 12:58Lermont Stowers Jones was found dead near the bridge.
- 13:03The official ruling was accidental drowning, but many in
- 13:08the community weren't exactly convinced.
- 13:11The case drew media attention, with some pointing to the
- 13:16Bridges history of violence. In 2023, another man, Alan
- 13:23Wilson, was found shot to death in the gravel lot near the
- 13:28bridge. His murder remains unsolved.
- 13:33To many, these modern tragedies echo the past.
- 13:38Whether supernatural or symbolic, the bridge has become
- 13:42a place where death lingers and yet people still come.
- 13:49Paranormal TV shows like Ghost Adventures and BuzzFeed Unsolved
- 13:55have featured the bridge, with some of their team members
- 13:59leaving shaken, leaving with voices captured on tape and
- 14:03figures seen in the shadows, and the feeling of a heavy presence
- 14:08pressing down on their chests. Ghost tours now include the
- 14:13bridge on their nightly routes, and locals warn not to go there
- 14:17alone. And fair warning, it seems as
- 14:21though local authorities have increased their patrols of the
- 14:25area, especially around Halloween.
- 14:29Despite or because of its reputation, Goatman's Bridge has
- 14:34become one of the most haunted locations in Texas, and
- 14:39allegedly, the Goat Man is more active than ever.
- 14:44So what is the Goat Man? A tormented spirit?
- 14:48A vengeful ghost? A demon summoned by occult
- 14:52rituals? Some believe that it could be a
- 14:56tulpa or a manifestation of belief itself, shaped by decades
- 15:03of fear and storytelling. Others think it's a warning left
- 15:09by the past, a reminder of atrocities that must not be
- 15:14forgotten. Local legends say the Goat Man
- 15:17only harms those who come with hate and their hearts that his
- 15:22vengeance is specific, targeted and moral.
- 15:28Others believe that he or it has no rules, only rage.
- 15:35But whether rooted in justice, voodoo or hell itself, the Goat
- 15:41Man is allegedly more than myth. It is a presence, a predator, a
- 15:49protector. And it is watching.
- 15:54So now that you know the supposed truth, would you cross
- 15:58the bridge? Would you knock three times?
- 16:02Would you speak his name? Thank you for joining me on this
