- 3:01coming through loud and clear. How are you today? I am doing well?
- 3:07Thank you so much? How are you? Oh girl? Charleston traffic.
- 3:10That's all I can say. Forty five minutes to get home, and
- 3:19y'all can y'all stop moving to Charleston, South Carolina. We were tied it
- 3:24doing that out here in Phoenix, all the California traffic coming here. No,
- 3:29y'all see Phoenix. When I see Phoenix, I think, son,
- 3:31I got time. Yeah, it's finally getting cool. Oh cool, supposed
- 3:38to be like seventy degrees this weekend. Yes, but let's get to this
- 3:43thing, girl, Let's get to it. So first of all, you
- 3:46know you gotta tell us about yourself. Go ahead, and so I am
- 3:53pen name author's d Ashante. I created that name use and my name is
- 4:00Desiri Ashante, So I just created it from that. I have been writing
- 4:06for a very long time, in my mid forties. My first, the
- 4:12first thing I ever wrote, was a short storty story when I was nine.
- 4:16It was published in the local newspaper. Born and raised in New Orleans,
- 4:23and it was called the Life of Lauren, and Lauren was me.
- 4:32Of course, my peachers probably were like, oh, I hope this child
- 4:35isn't going through all of these things. So, of course, me being
- 4:40raised in a Southern Baptist household. What happens in the house stays in the
- 4:45house, you know. So there's that. I am married to my husband
- 4:53who I've been with for twenty one years. We've been married for three forever.
- 4:59We have five children, uh none, none, We don't share any.
- 5:04But I have four he bought one to the table, and two grandsons.
- 5:10We have two grandsons. No, no, we don't. We have
- 5:14four grandsons. Two of my daughters have a boy, and his daughter has
- 5:18two boys. God bless you. I got three nephews. So you know
- 5:30that's that's just me in a nutshell. I'm a no girl till I d
- 5:33I e where I am in the world. I believe Black and Gogle.
- 5:42I'm gonna tell you that. So one of my favorite artists, it's from
- 5:47there. I love Big Freedom. Oh yeah, yeah, she came to
- 5:56Charleston, Okay for our profest. Well I worked that day so I didn't
- 6:01have to pay. I was like, go ahead to sign me up.
- 6:09I loved Big FREEDO. I love it. I love it love. Yeah.
- 6:12So we see that you said that you started writing. You wrote your
- 6:15first short novel at nine years oh nine. What needs you continue going to
- 6:25becoming an author of freedom. It gave me a freedom. When I was
- 6:30coming up in New Orleans. New Orleans was the capital of the murder capital,
- 6:36so of course we had childhoods. We went outside, we came in
- 6:42when the lights came on. However, in the thick of things, there
- 6:47was a lot going on within my household, so I was just right to
- 6:54escape what was going on inside what was going on outside, you know.
- 6:58So that was been a skate for me. And I had my first child
- 7:02when I was fourteen, so right now had to take the back burner.
- 7:10I then started writing poetry because you know, poetry didn't take as long as
- 7:15it took to write a book. So as an adult, my daughter was
- 7:20challenging me because she's a reader as well. So she's like, we would
- 7:25always be like, oh my god, this book could have been so much
- 7:29better if or if I wrote this book, I would have ended it like
- 7:33this. And she's like, I challenged you to write one. I challenged
- 7:39you to write a book, and I said, dull accepted. You had
- 7:46an in house editor. Huh, I wrote my first book that has still
- 7:51not been published. Nope, I never gave my first book up. So
- 8:00I am working on it. I'm working on rewriting because of course the timing
- 8:07the times has changed, so I'm gonna have to do a full rewrite of
- 8:13that book, or I may just end up keeping it, keeping it to
- 8:18myself because it's about eighty five k. So oh wow. But yeah,
- 8:26that's that's how I became an author because my daughter challenged me in house editor
- 8:35and a in house cheerleader. It's something when you have that in house cheerleaders,
- 8:39you know what I'm saying, even though you have to feed them,
- 8:43being them Washington, you know, do all other stuff, just to have
- 8:46that say that, it's warning. I mean, my little girl comes and
- 8:50gives me a hug and a kiss all the time, and lost sometime I'm
- 8:54like, little check please, But then it's like, all right, thank
- 9:00you, push this a little bit more. Thank you, thank you daughter
- 9:05for pushing. So let's get into this. Fell in love with the goon,
- 9:15married a boss. Mm hm so so goon boss, how did you
- 9:22come to this book? And and the title it just go ahead, spill
- 9:28of beans. All right. So my husband is one of my biggest cheerleaders.
- 9:35And I was tossing around titles, tossing around titles and He's like,
- 9:39nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, and then uh so I
- 9:45can't remember the title I had, but he made a play on it,
- 9:48and he was like, what because I used his last Our last name is
- 9:54Riley, my last my married name is Riley, my my my last name
- 10:00is Jackson. Okay, So the character Jackson I made, I spelled j
- 10:09a x orien and the female character Riley I spelled different from his last name.
- 10:16So that's where we got the name from. And he was like,
- 10:18well, we're gonna put a twist on it. We're gonna she's gonna be
- 10:22the goon. So that's how she got her last name Goonsby. Uh,
- 10:28and they call her gooney or goon and the title. He was like,
- 10:35okay, So since we're doing her last name Goonsby and he's gonna be a
- 10:39boss, we can do how about fall in love with a goon married a
- 10:43boss because he initially falls in love first, So he falls in love with
- 10:50a goon and eventually she marries a boss because he becomes the boss in the
- 10:56town. So hold up, so you're telling me the home girl is the
- 11:05goon and the dude is the boss. We're nine times out of ten.
- 11:11And the book is the Open Way, Yes, ma'am. Yes, ma'am.
- 11:20Look at everybody who read the book with in me like, hey,
- 11:24how did you what made you make the girl the goon? You know,
- 11:26I'm just like because every goon we read about is a man. Yes,
- 11:31yes, and that is true. The game just as hard as they can
- 11:35play it for ya. Hey, y'all, hear you just answered and asked
- 11:46my question because I was going to ask, like, why make the female
- 11:48on the goon? But you know what, that's it's a nice the It
- 11:54really came from they. She was raised in floss to kill, okay,
- 11:58so she had to have a harder, a hard outer shell. Yep,
- 12:05that is correct. With everything that she went through within with that family that
- 12:09she had, she had to find a way to get from under that fell.
- 12:18And the only way she could find as such a young girl was to
- 12:24get out there and hustle, and she had multiple her So that's what made
- 12:30a goon. So you are answer my next questions in ten words of lection,
- 12:39see look at it. So I'm gonna ask you this one. What
- 12:41is your favorite line from this book? You can only choose one line?
- 12:48Read line I have so many, but okay, I give you two.
- 12:52I give you two. I'm gonna go with. My absolute favorite line was
- 13:03Goon Gooney and Jackson had got into it, got into it, and he
- 13:09was she was leaving. She was like, you know what, I don't
- 13:13have time for this. I'm leaving, and as she's walking the right away,
- 13:18he runs up to her and grabs her and he says, I love
- 13:22you with my whole soul and I won't be responsible for walking away from God's
- 13:28blessing and that that that did it for me. Dang, that's like something
- 13:39meet me at the altar and your white dress type stuff right this. Yeah,
- 13:45And I guess my second favorite line would be when she got into all
- 13:48that trouble later on in life. Her she she was finally adopted right before
- 13:54her eighteenth birthday and that family loved the loved her her like the whole family
- 14:01loved her, so they surprised her right before her birthday with an adoption decree.
- 14:07And whenever she got into trouble, her mom went to go visit her
- 14:13and she said she said to her, she said, I I need you
- 14:22to understand that the will of God won't take you where the spirit of God
- 14:30won't protect you. Keep your head up. And that was deep for me
- 14:39because that was something that my mother would always say to me when I thought,
- 14:43when I thought times were tough and it getting the thick of things,
- 14:46and she'll be like, what did I tell you? What did I teach
- 14:50you? When you at rock bottom? You don't have any other way to
- 14:54go? But uh, that was profound that I I've never thought of it
- 15:07that way. I might have glanced at it, but that here you say
- 15:09it like that, I never thought about it that way. You know what?
- 15:16We on that note, you guys, we're gonna take a break real
- 15:18quick. You know, we got to do our commercials. So y'all hold
- 15:24tight. She come back with some more cause you know, like it's it.
- 15:28She married, fell in love with a goon, but married a boss.
- 15:33So you guys, turn off flight tonight ONMG, that's think a shower
- 16:12shower together. I watched a monded you was so my wealday and save j
- 16:38turn off, come girl, don't want to catch and Publishing, we are
- 16:52committed to helping our authors reach their goals and pursue their dreams of becoming published
- 16:56authors. We work closely with each author to ensure a successful publishing experience,
- 17:03and dedicated to helping them tell their stories in the most impactful and meaningful ways.
- 17:07So stop procrastinating and let's get started with writing that book. Welcome back,
- 17:17Welcome back everyone. I told you heard that turned off the light and
- 17:21did she come up? So I'm thinking that your book is streetlet. It
- 17:33is definitely okay, okay, And of course the first thing I thought was
- 17:40the title. But then you know, nowadays they may say street lit.
- 17:45But then when you look, you get into the book, you're like,
- 17:48nah, this ain't street lit. This ain't how how the young lady told
- 17:52me to dig? That ain't hood enough, missus patrese, we need some
- 17:56hood, Well, she said, hood sense? What is the hood?
- 18:02She said? When I read a book, I want to imagine somebody's sitting
- 18:04on the corner with a cigarette hanging out their mom fixed somebody cop But you
- 18:17Well, every time I'm asked that question, I tell people I didn't choose
- 18:22street lit. Lit chose me. You know. I write. I just
- 18:33write stories. Whatever the characters are talking about, that's what I write them.
- 18:37I create the title. I cannot. I create the title and I
- 18:41go from there. Whatever the character. When I do my character building and
- 18:45that I give them their quirks and I give them everything they tell me what
- 18:49the right, you know? So I just write stuff that I feel like
- 18:56the people want to read. I write things that I want to read,
- 19:02you know. So, and then on top of that, if a story
- 19:07won't move on, it's because my character is like, no, that's not
- 19:12happening. This ain't what we're here for. So either you're gonna write what
- 19:17I want to write, or we ain't moving on. I was just about
- 19:21to ask you, it seems like your characters drive you, right, they
- 19:26drive me. They are definitely the drivers. I'm just a passenger, okay.
- 19:32You know. I just like to be able to provide that same sense
- 19:41of being in it's so engaged in the story that whatever problems you're having in
- 19:51life are nonexistent. So I consider myself that I rodmance murderers, because there's
- 19:59gonna be there's gonna be romance, there's gonna be murdered. And I was
- 20:03gonna ask you about that. So that one, because when I didn't even
- 20:07know how to pronounce that. When I saw that, I'm personally thank you
- 20:12because when people see me they don't think that I would read street lit.
- 20:18When I tell them I work at a library, the first thing they say
- 20:19is your library got books like that. I'm like, yes, we do,
- 20:23and I'm very proud, and I'm gonna walk you to this out and
- 20:26I'm gonna show you a couple of them. So for me, that is
- 20:30why I read streetlet because this is not something that will happen my everyday life,
- 20:34and I read to take me away from whatever is going on, Like
- 20:38if I'm really stressed and I'm at work, Oh, you may hear Little
- 20:42Wayne, you may hear Shirley Murdoch, and you might hear Tied tr Bette
- 20:47drum pe Key, and then you might hear a little bit of somebody else
- 20:51reading something that I can't even say says I can't trouble. But you know
- 20:55what I'm trying to say, excuse me, allergy is really kicking. So
- 21:00that title now seeing them one more time to me erodimance murderous. How in
- 21:11the world did you come up with that one? I was like, uh,
- 21:15I was just messing words because my characters are grown, so they gonna
- 21:22have sex. And for the most part, I like to give happy most
- 21:29of them. Sometimes the characters don't get the happy end and that the reader
- 21:32want them to have, because sometimes I have characters that don't want to be
- 21:36in love, but they want to be romanced. They want the cow but
- 21:41not the calf. So I have a few female characters that's like, I'm
- 21:48just in it for the ride, so that that's my romance part of it.
- 21:53And then I initially started off basing all of my characters off of people
- 21:59I knew, you know, and situations that I had been a part of.
- 22:04So, like I said, I was born in the murder born and
- 22:07raised in the murder capital, so there's a lot of murder. Uh.
- 22:12And I fight with one of my friends every year because anybody can get it,
- 22:21man, woman or child. Oh oh you ruthless? Okay. Every
- 22:27year every year she would just like send me a random text blah blah blah,
- 22:36and I'm like, girl, what's wrong with you? You remember you
- 22:37killed that such and such And I'm like, I didn't kill that. The
- 22:45character was dead. For the characters, oh wow, yeah, even my
- 22:51daughter, my daughter. When my daughter read now this is a book called
- 22:55Freaking You, it was don't run asked that that quick? What is this
- 23:02then freaking you Okay, yeah, so there is two horrible debts. My
- 23:19daughter called me at the beginning when the first one happened that that one wasn't
- 23:23a murder she died. It was the main character's mom. So she was
- 23:29like, Mom, you could have prepared me for this, and I'm like,
- 23:33uh no, you're a reader just like everybody else. Got to the
- 23:38next the other part, which is midway the book, She's like, I
- 23:44can't believe you would do that, and I'm like, I didn't do it.
- 23:48So every time Nadine, when when Nadine, she'll post it on my
- 23:57wall, like she'll literally posted on my wall cursing me out about the baby
- 24:03that got murdered. Oh wow around when they do that stuff like that,
- 24:12and my daughter would chime me and I'm just like, it wasn't even my
- 24:21idea. Like I was trying to move on. I was trying to get
- 24:23the character to do something different, and she's like, I can't live without
- 24:29my child, So you know what, if you want to close my story
- 24:36out, you're gonna do this the way I want to do it. And
- 24:37I was literally stuck on in on that scene for about six days. Hmmm.
- 24:45So let's let's let's have a little fun with this question. So let's
- 24:49bring out the character Jackson. Who would be the celebrity to play Jackson in
- 24:56the movie fell in Love with the Goon, married a boss? Who would
- 25:03be the celebrity actor because of his character build and work of I would choose
- 25:12Damns and interests, the little boy from Snowfall. Oh, wow, because
- 25:22he has a beautiful smile, he's charming, he's chocolate. Uh, he's
- 25:26everything that. He's well spoken, you know, he's everything that Jackson is.
- 25:34Wow. Okay, authoress, Well, I'm sorry. Actress Riley Tayanna
- 25:47Taylor. She would have to be Riley because Riley is wild, she's loud,
- 25:52she's pretty, she's fit, uh and she just uncut. And Teyanna
- 26:00Taylor is all of that. I can see that. I can't I can't
- 26:07see that. I can see that. Yeah, I can see that.
- 26:10Well, okay, let's take it one more step and then well, you
- 26:12know, get your information. Excuse me? Who would be the director?
- 26:19Who? Oh, the one director that I would have wanted is no longer
- 26:30here, Old John Singleton because he made movies for us. What you said?
- 26:41You know who I was thinking, I was thinking Spike Lee, you
- 26:45know what, and that that was my second. That's my second, that's
- 26:49my runner up. Okay, Spike Lee. He makes movies for us too.
- 26:55I was truly thinking Spike Lee. Man, Yeah, I would definitely
- 26:57go with Spike Lee because my first choice passed away. Okay, Okay,
- 27:04So now we're getting to the end of the broadcast, so you know,
- 27:07you got to give us all the rundown, even though it's scrolling across the
- 27:11bottom, so you guys can catch the replay and catch all her handles at
- 27:17the bottom. But I would like to say, what would you like to
- 27:19say to your new readers, old readers, future readers, upcoming readers,
- 27:26your audience. What would you like to say to that I started this journey
- 27:32in twenty seventeen. My book got kicked back a few times and I was
- 27:37getting discouraged. Had I had this one reader that we shared books. When
- 27:42we work together, we would share books and she's like, this, don't
- 27:48give up. She's like, I know that it's in you because we would
- 27:53always have the same discussion that myself and my daughter would have and she's like,
- 28:00don't give up. And it's readers like her who she does not read
- 28:04digital books, so every every book that I have I had to at least
- 28:10get one author copy to send to her so she she would it's people like
- 28:19her that make keep me motivated to go. In this last couple I've been
- 28:26on a hiatus because I lost my mom in August and it was a wild
- 28:33run. But I would like to say to my new readers, if you're
- 28:36looking for something out the box but real, at the same time, I'm
- 28:45your I'm the author that she's looking for. I feed people to alligators.
- 28:51Uh you know I I just do all of this off the walks up that
- 28:55actually happens. But at the same time, I take you to a place
- 29:00where you can be free. I'm trying. I'm I use words that you
- 29:07might need to use a dictionary for, but it's not overwhelming, you know.
- 29:15I keep it as simple as I can with being complex. Love it,
- 29:22love it, love it, loving it, loving it. That's my
- 29:26alarm. Oh I work nights. I work nights, so my alarm goes
- 29:32off at five point thirty. But you know what, I wanted you to
- 29:37know that you have my thoughts and my prayers. On this coming Monday,
- 29:42it will be two years since I lost my mom, so I totally understand
- 29:48how you feel and knowing well, I got staff day that day, so
- 29:52I can't sit up and read a book. You know what, be quiete,
- 29:57So give us your handles, because you already told us that you know
- 30:04your books are gonna take us to a different place, so we need to
- 30:07know where to follow you so we can get all the info on your your
- 30:11new books, your upcoming books, all of it. So oh there,
- 30:15it goes across the screen. But if you want to go ahead and give
- 30:18it so on Facebook. I am Desirie Authors, did Shante Riley. I
