- 2:59the Hurricane demanded good morning, How are you? Good morning, I'm well,
- 3:02thank you. How are you? I am fine, Thank you for
- 3:05being here. I want to talk about what's going on in my adopted hometown.
- 3:08Although I'm not technically within city limits, it is on my mailbox.
- 3:13It does say Hurricane, West Virginia. I know you guys have some big
- 3:15doings for the fourth of July next week. Talk about them. We do.
- 3:19Absolutely, We're throwing the biggest party in Hurricane on the fourth of July
- 3:23and everything is free. That's the headline. We kick off the day with
- 3:29the parade at two o'clock down Midland Trail and over to main streets, and
- 3:32then we have three activities all evening long from three to eight pm at City
- 3:37Park. And I'll tell you we'll talk about the parade here just for a
- 3:42moment. I've been in various parades for various reasons one time or another of
- 3:46my life. That Hurricane Parade is a pretty big deal. I mean,
- 3:50no matter what the parade is, whether it's Christmas Parade or the fourth or
- 3:53whatever, it's it's a pretty big parade. Yeah. We have two parades
- 3:57a year, and the fourth of July is certainly um one that people get
- 4:00out, get out their patriotic gear, and we'll have everything from you know,
- 4:05beauty queens to old cars, to attractors to you know, just families
- 4:10coming out and enjoying themselves and decking out their truck and trailer and going down
- 4:15Main Street. So it's a great hometown event. And I'll say this too
- 4:18about Hurricane and get a little biased because that's the town nearest to me.
- 4:24I guess is that you'd be hard pressed to find a town the size of
- 4:30Herricane that goes all out for the Fourth of jut we have some big events,
- 4:33you know going on. Ripley comes to mind, and some of the
- 4:36things that we have going on, But for a town of its size,
- 4:41I mean, it's a big time party, and it's an all day party,
- 4:45that's right, That's right. And we have not only is you know,
- 4:47admission free when we get over to City Park from three to eight,
- 4:50but we have things free huskies, ice cream, free snow cones, three
- 4:55caught candy, free watermelon slices, hot Doug give aways, t shirt giveaways.
- 4:59I mean, you're right, We certainly go all out and we're excited
- 5:01to host this with of course, we couldn't do it without our awesome sponsors.
- 5:05Um, but we're excited to host this and people come from from all
- 5:11around and we're excited to see them. Get those sponsors in there. Do
- 5:13you have a list readily available in front of you there? There are so
- 5:16many, But I would like to say Cuntnam County Bank is always a huge
- 5:20supporter and they make sure we have awesome fireworks, which we can talk about
- 5:24fireworks here in a minute. But you know we've got Martin's, Peterbilt is
- 5:29always great to us Odell with a donex Walker, christ Or Dodge, Steep
- 5:32and Ram tutors, Genos, Rick Epli and Paving. I could go on
- 5:36and on. We have Farley's whose sponsors our hot dog eating contests, which
- 5:42Dave, we could use the more contestant if you'd like to be in our
- 5:45hot dog eating contest. You know, people, because people know I'm a
- 5:47foodie, they're always throwing this up to me about joining hot dog contest.
- 5:51I'm not a competitive ead. Okay, I'm not gonna I'm probably not gonna
- 5:55joining, is it now? This is not a new thing. You've done
- 5:57the hot dog eating contest in the past. Haven't you. Absolutely, it's
- 6:00always a good time and you know, we put some pretty good prize money
- 6:03out there. So, like I said, we could use a few more
- 6:05contestants. We have ten slots and I think six or seven are filled right
- 6:10now. So if anybody out there is interested, it's hurric and WB dot
- 6:15Com Slash hot Dog Contest. Okay for all the details. So how many
- 6:19hot dogs in the year's past does the ballpark figure have people down to win
- 6:23the championship? Yeah, so it's anywhere from like fifteen to nineteen. I
- 6:27think nineteen was our max slash And what timeframe? How long a time with
- 6:30the five minutes? Nineteen hot dogs in five minutes? Yeah. Yeah,
- 6:35I like my hot dogs, but I don't think myself nor my producer Anthony
- 6:40Harmon could do could do that. Yeah, I'd like to enjoy my hot
- 6:44dogs, Yes exactly. There are people out there who are really excited about
- 6:47it and anyway, Yeah, so we appreciate Farley's for sponsoring that and bringing
- 6:53hot dogs over and he's got a big trophy in addition to the prize money
- 6:57that we give away. So good stuff. Because we're talking about Manda Ramy,
- 7:00who's the marketing director for the City of Hurricane. You mentioned the fireworks.
- 7:03Talk about the fireworks. Yeah, so fireworks In years past we have
- 7:09let them off at City Park, but the last couple of years we have
- 7:13let them off at what we call water Tank Hill, which is just past
- 7:16Hurrican Middle School. So we wrap up the party at City Park at eight
- 7:20pm so that people can go and find their spot to watch the fireworks from
- 7:25water Tank Hill, which it's just about visible from a whole lot of places
- 7:30in downtown Hurricane, so you can see the water Tank in the daytime.
- 7:33You can see the fireworks at ten o'clock on July fourth. Good stuff.
- 7:39And again it's an all day party, as you said, with the parade
- 7:42and so many of these activities demand which is great for families. So many
- 7:46of these things are free absolutely yeah. And like I said, we'll also
- 7:49have free inflatables, free water slid, the spray ground at City Park is
- 7:55free admission for everybody, no matter where you live. All day, free
- 7:59petting zoo. You know, I could go on and on. We have
- 8:01a concert from six to eight pm with Eric burgett Um. He's a Nashville
- 8:05recording artist. He's been with us the last couple of years, and he
- 8:09is just such so popular. He sings his own songs, but he also
- 8:11sings things you can sing to. UM and he'll be on stage, like
- 8:15I said, from six to eight. Um. Yeah, it's going to
- 8:18be a good time. Indeed, it is. It always is in Hurricane.
- 8:22And I would imagine when you have a party like this, an all
- 8:24day thing, and have all these free things, that you're going to have
- 8:26a whole lot of people that are going to come in from out of the
- 8:30area too. And that's certainly is welcome. Yes, absolutely, And I
- 8:33should say if you're worried about parking, don't be Um. Park over at
- 8:37Herrican High School and we'll have a free shuttle service running all evening long back
- 8:41and forth. They'll take you over to the park and then pick you back
- 8:43up when you're ready to leave. That's good, That's that's really good because
- 8:46sometimes you know me, but people like me who are a little impatient may
- 8:50may not want to attend certain events because of the parking situation. But you
- 8:54got the shuttle buses there from Hurricane High School. Uh. That that that
- 8:58that that make it easy. And I know anytime that you plan an event
- 9:01like this. This really isn't all your thing, trying to put it all
- 9:03together, Amanda. Absolutely. Yeah, And if anybody out there is interested
- 9:09in getting involved, like I said, we could still use hot dog contest
- 9:13entries, but also if you'd like to be in the parade, if you
- 9:16have a local business or an organization that you'd like to just come out and
- 9:20join us. We still are accepting parade registrations hurricanewv dot com slash parade registration
- 9:26to get your day on our list. And you've got on you guys,
- 9:28just do a fantastic job when your social media, I know, when your
- 9:31social media pages that you have everything laid out there as far as time and
- 9:35things of that nature. Yep, yep. Absolutely go to get our Facebook
- 9:41page or our hurricanewv dot com either one. We've we've got all the details
- 9:45on there. All right. Well, it's gonna be a great Fourth of
- 9:48July and Hurricane Amanda. It's always a pleasure to have you on the show.
- 9:50And we still need people to sign up for this hot dog eating contest.
- 9:54Absolutely, and hey, join us down here on Main Street today for
- 9:56Mondays on Maine from eleven to We've got some food trucks. Okay, who

- 13:41update is brought to you by Slingo Law Firm, Charles's Personal injury law Firm.
- 13:46How are you man? Well, I don't we don't have a microphone
- 13:52on him? Do we have a microphone for him? Hello? Here we
- 13:56go? Hello, here you sir, Mike Jack one two three, There
- 13:58you go. I'm great. I mean I'm already sleep deprived. I've had
- 14:03two naps today. It's it's what, it's nine twenty one. I've had
- 14:07two naps to day already, and one was on air. Yeah, who
- 14:11is it? As soon as seven o'clock yet I run into the conference room,
- 14:15I take like a fifteen minute power nap and then right back up and
- 14:18we go again. And so then I went to the boat and had a
- 14:22nap, and so now I should be good for the rest of the day,
- 14:24all right. And there's a lot the acts of you and all of
- 14:28the other folks that do this regatta thing. I mean, you brought it
- 14:31back last year, and last year was kind of a learning experience because maybe
- 14:35you, I mean that was your first regatta. Yeah, yeah, and
- 14:37so yeah, exactly, I've done large scale events before. I've done rock
- 14:41fests and country fest and Texas Motor Speedway was in on planning on that.
- 14:45But you know, it's just a whole different version of it once you're when
- 14:48you're completely immersed in it. So we're excited, you know, we're excited
- 14:52about it. Right now, the Amhurst Madison is bringing down, like right
- 14:56now, I just got the picture and the video of the of the large
- 15:01it's being brought in. They're going to anchor that in. By noon,
- 15:03we start moving the sternmo boats, putting them all in place exactly how we
- 15:07want for the rest of the weekend and for the rest of the week and
- 15:09the weekend, and you know, the carnivals getting in place. We've got
- 15:13fuel deliveries coming in from Oliver's out there, you know, to make just
- 15:18all kinds of things. There's so many things, a lot of moving parts,
- 15:20very much. And again, you know people somebody who said to me
- 15:24earlier, they said, well, why are they starting so early. Well,
- 15:26because there's two hundred thousand people that are going to be in Charleston,
- 15:30and it takes just a little bit of planning to be able to do that.
- 15:31Yeah, first thing Saturday morning of the Street Street crew, we're taking
- 15:37down the stoplight right there at Summer's Street. And you might go, summers
- 15:39the bulletard, You might go, why do you take down a street light?
- 15:41Well, do you want a flashing yellow in front of you while you're
- 15:46trying to watch a concert? Probably not. It ruins pictures everything else.
- 15:50So they took that down. You know, there's so many things it part
- 15:54of it too, You've got to think about it. It's actually good to
- 15:56get people used to the pattern that this is shut down, here's where you
- 16:00gotta go. So so there's a lot of things that are moving parts.
- 16:03Like yesterday, last year we had forty five vendors okay, food, all
- 16:08kinds of other things. This year we have over seventy. Wow, and
- 16:14and we gotta and believe me, we have. We're packing them in right
- 16:17there those you know, three blocks and a couple of splinters off onto Summer's
- 16:22lately in Quart Street. Just gotta check from the folks at the United Way
- 16:26that said to remind everyone about the duck race on Sunday. Listen the rubber
- 16:30duck raising, great rubber duck raised. Uh, you know they're going to
- 16:34get those ducks, you know, knock them off the bridge. We did
- 16:38have I gotta tell that Margaret. I don't know if Margaret's ever told the
- 16:41story, but one time the DNR said, why would you do that to
- 16:45those ducks? She goes, They're not alive, they're rubber ducks. They
- 16:51were completely confused, so going all less next. But as God is my
- 16:56witness, I thought ducks could fly exactly absolutely. You know, um,
- 17:00I refer to use Captain Brian Hughes. I learned that by watching Mark Curtis's
- 17:03show when you and the mayor were on him camp. He refers to you
- 17:07as us as the captain. I kind of like it. It's I mean,
- 17:11you're the captain of your own of your own ship, of my own
- 17:12ship. And then uh yeah, it's you know, I know about every
- 17:15single thing that happens with this, with this forgotty. If I can't answer
- 17:18it, then we've got issues. But but you know, I've been immersed
- 17:22in fundraising, you know, and and there have been a lot of new
- 17:26folks step up to the plate and help us out. And Moses is one
- 17:30of them. They sponsored the stage. They do it live on the letty,
- 17:33but they said, I was told Moses wants to be a part of
- 17:37every stage that's happening, you know, consistently, and they signed a longer
- 17:41deal so that, you know, what we're trying to do is get people
- 17:44involved in multi year deals so that we know this forgot is going to continue.
- 17:48And that's exactly what we've got going on. Let's uh talk about the
- 17:52actual Stern wheelers. I mean, this is what it's all about. And
- 17:55that's kind of your your field of expertise that in weather. Uh but fenty
- 18:00I will talk you about the weather a little bit later on. But I
- 18:02mean the all these Stern wheelers coming in here, man, that's that's that's
- 18:06no easy task to get them all in here. It's not a matter of
- 18:08fact. We had yesterday the Chenny B and the Laura Elizabeth Laurna Elizabeth is
- 18:12one hundred and twenty foot boat that is twenty four feet wide. It's a
- 18:18monster custom built up at East Liverpool, Ohio. They came in yesterday along
- 18:23with the Genny B from Rayland, Ohio up there north of Wheeling. You
- 18:29know, so these people are coming long distances to be here and to celebrate
- 18:33and so this is actually the first This is the second time the Laura Elizabeth
- 18:37has been it's Charleston, but this is the first time it's been to a
- 18:41regatta. So we and we've got other boats that are coming in from the
- 18:44Ohio River uh and some here from the canam River. Uh. You know
- 18:48the Princess Margie used to be here, but it had wasn't here last year.
- 18:51Has new owners and guess what they're gonna be there. Yeah, so
- 18:55Lajah, we had twenty one Sermo boats in total. We believe we're gonna
- 18:59have about twenty twenty six at twenty seven and it grows every year, just
- 19:02like like you said, with the food trucks and everything. Absolutely and and
- 19:04you know the reason we were looking at thirty but we had a couple of
- 19:07breakdowns so and and parts are hard to get still so and a lot of
- 19:12these are custom parts. You know, these aren't off the show to advance
- 19:17auto parts and pick these things up that you're saying, right, yeah,
- 19:18you go for some oil and that's about it, and some greaser and you
- 19:22know, stuff like that. But everything else is is there's a lot of
- 19:26custom parts. I mean, I've had to do the same this year with
- 19:29some of the stuff that I've been trying to get and custom I mean,
- 19:32listen, I've got it out of the machine shop. They're custom building stuff
- 19:37for my transmission. So there's a lot of you know, we put a
- 19:38lot of money, a lot of blood, sweat, tears and arguments in
- 19:44this with our better half. So you know, that's the way it goes.
- 19:47How's the men, because you had a little surgical procedure there and you
- 19:51were hopping kind of hopping along the TV or are you good to go?
- 19:53Have you? Have you been cleared to play? I've been cleared to play
- 20:00essentially the punter position, but I'm not kicking anything, so really I guess
- 20:06that'd be the holder. But yeah, I had surgery and it unfortunately the
- 20:11it wasn't the surgeon's fault. This is just a matter of way things happened
- 20:15for nineteen weeks, uh, and didn't heal right, it wasn't healing properly,
- 20:18and so we've had to do extra things to get it there. But
- 20:22I can finally walk, So so I'm actually in a shoe finally, like
- 20:27a real shoe. Yeah, a real shoe. It, I mean,
- 20:30my my big toes about about an eighth of an inch shorter than what it
- 20:34used to be. But hey, you know, it just means I can
- 20:37get smaller shoes. There you go, save a little bit of money.
- 20:40We're talking with Brian Hughes about the regatta which is going to kick off later
- 20:44this week, and man, the musical entertainment this year, I mean,
- 20:47cooling the gang better than Ezra, Flo Rida, Jody Messina, Kate Boytech
- 20:52is going to be there with her. Kates my fellow loganite, and Kate
- 20:56actually is going to be co hosting the show with me this Friday. Have
- 21:00a different co host on every Friday, and Kate's gonna be my co host
- 21:02this Friday, So we're looking forward to seeing her. And if you've not
- 21:04seen this, this young lady performed. She's absolutely fantastic, wonderful, wonderful
- 21:10and ambassador for the city of Charleston and such. It's the music line up,
- 21:15you know, it's it's wide variety, and that's what we try and
- 21:18you know, in our discussions last year and obviously this year and in the
- 21:22futures, we want to have the widest variety that we possibly can. You
- 21:26know, they're bands that we try to get their bands that we're gonna try
- 21:29and get next year. It's it's all about getting on you know, them
- 21:32knowing to get on the schedule. But I gotta tell you, Patrick Leahy
- 21:34over at the Commissions Center and Coliseum, that man can book shows. And
- 21:41that's yeah, obviously you can see from what's happened, you know, over
- 21:45the last couple of years. And that's and you know they're helping do all
- 21:48that. And actually, and that's the thing you got to think about this.
- 21:51We're keeping the money local as best we possibly can, and we're doing
- 21:55all of our bookings, stage set up, everything is done through or on
- 22:00it through the Civic Center. So, okna, excuse me, Commitgeon Center
- 22:03and Colts. We're gonna have Chim Brady on from the CVB to mar to
- 22:07talk about the economic impact. But for folks that forgot from last year ballpark
- 22:11on on what this meant to that not just the city of Charleston, but
- 22:14the surrounding areas. I mean, when you look at what we what we
- 22:17saw was thirty one and a half million dollar impact, you know, and
- 22:21I've told this story over and over again page down at you know, down
- 22:25at Sam's Uptown Cafe said if he had he said, if he had had
- 22:29five more days of the festival, he would have paid everything off, all
- 22:33the notes, everything done. Uh. You know, you just go up
- 22:37and down Capitol Street with those restaurants and bars and then all the other businesses,
- 22:41and then you go at you know, you look at hotels. I
- 22:44just Charleston. Who tells you go to South Charleston. You have to go
- 22:47out to Puttnham County as well. Next thing, you know, you've got
- 22:51all these people that are hotels, are booked up, restaurants. You know,
- 22:53it's it is an impact. We're buying fuel today, you know,
- 22:57the carnivals, buying few uh you know today and tomorrow I'm buying fuel.
- 23:03We're doing all this stuff and that money is just staying here. Yeah,
- 23:07yeah, yeah, you're absolutely right it And of course the family aspect of
- 23:11Brian is so important. And you mentioned the carnival and all these other things
- 23:15going on. I mean, what's going on at Magic Islands. Talk about
- 23:18that Magic Island. We've got tons of bounce houses that kids will have all
- 23:22kinds of time to play down there. Plus we've got the skate park exhibition
- 23:26that's going to be down there. It's different than last year because we want
- 23:29to switch it up, change it up. We've got a foam garage as
- 23:33a big foam party that they're going to have on you know, on the
- 23:37boulevard down there. The Air Force is going to be here. You can
- 23:41try if their three D gaming trailer and just you know, learned to Fly
- 23:45and it essentially learned to Fly, and inside that we've got you know,
- 23:48the dhhrs Wick program. If you've got your if you've got a new baby
- 23:53and you need to do breastfeeding, they've got a place to do that inside
- 23:56this tent and everything. So there's so many things for so many people to
- 24:00see and do and enjoy, kids to be able to play. It is
- 24:03a family friendly event. And then another thing too, you know, you
- 24:07would get down down to the concerts and obviously we're gonna have the beer and
- 24:10such, but we have we partnered with with a brewery and we're gonna have
- 24:15a non alcoholic beer. So if you want to partake quote unquote, it's
- 24:18going to be a custom non alcoholic beer that you can buy. So it
- 24:22would Stern Charleston term where we got it all over over that again we're doing
- 24:26things to try and make things different and better as we go along. I
- 24:29liked as I would reference to you're in the mayor's appearance and PG was on
- 24:33there as well on Mark Curtis's show over the weekend, his Politics Free show,
- 24:37that is what he called it, Inside West Virginia Politics. But the
- 24:40mayor told the story about the family from over on the West side of Charleston
- 24:44that she ran into in the hotel and she asked them, She said,
- 24:47well, where you guys from and they said the West Side. They just
- 24:51decided to be right in the middle of everything, so they got a hotel
- 24:52room here exactly. We have so many people who live here but are But
- 24:56I have friends of mine are They're staying in the hotels downtown because they don't
- 25:02want to. They want First of all, you know you have Let's say
- 25:04you go to our will watch Crafts beer festival on Friday. It's on Capitol
- 25:10Street. You've got your own jumboat trying to watch there. But if you
- 25:11go to that, you drink a little extra guess what hotel do it all
- 25:15and stay safe and that that's what we are encouraging, you know, don't
- 25:19drink and drive, stay safe. You can stay downtown. You know,
- 25:22even if you have to sleep in the trunk, you'll be fine. And
- 25:26about the hotel, this was also brought up on that interview. If you
- 25:30are going to be one of these people, um, you probably need to
- 25:34get that hotel yesterday. And I'm talking about if you're going to get one
- 25:37in Tay's Valley or if you're gonna get one in South Charleston or wherever you've
- 25:41got to because because you know, the four Points completely booked up, we
- 25:47know that obviously that's that's the prime location there. But you've got other ones
- 25:49for the Marriotte to Embassy suites. And as we said, you know,
- 25:55if you're going to come in from Huntington, or if you're gonna come in
- 25:56from Ohio, Kentucky have ends. You might have to say, South Charleston,
- 26:02you might have to go to Cross Lanes. Uh, you might have
- 26:04to step out into the Day's Valley area with a hotel. But the thing
- 26:08is we're bringing money into into West Virginia from out of saders. You know,
- 26:14around thirty percent of the people who came to the regatta came from more
- 26:18than fifty miles and so you had some of our biggest markets where Washington,
- 26:22DC you had, you had the North Carolina South Carolina area, a lot
- 26:26of the folks who've retired and gone down there, Oh they came back.
- 26:30You had uh, Cincinnati, you had Pittsburgh, you had Cleveland. We
- 26:34had folks from Georgia, Texas and California. I mean, if people came
- 26:40to the regatta to experience, you know, relive it all again and hopefully
- 26:44with this can continue anew for the years to come. I got a couple
- 26:48of texts your Texas for anyone that will do the foam garage or bring a
- 26:51change of clothes and shoes because you will get so much, Yes you will.
- 26:56It's one of those things that if you if your kids you wanted to
- 27:00play and you want to go experience at all, that's the last job.
- 27:03And then you take them home. And when we say take them home,
- 27:06listen, you can ride the KRT bus to the to the locations, whether
- 27:11it be a big loads the Patrick Street plaza, that's a pickup point that
- 27:15you can park the car and ride the bus in saying thing over it lately.
- 27:18And then also we have a stop now at the ballpark because the ballpark,
- 27:22they're gonna be playing and so they're gonna have their big pregatta party on
- 27:29Thursday, and they're gonna have this collectible stern Wild Regatta cups. So those
- 27:36we just had a few of them that kind of made their appearance last year.
- 27:38But we've got a bunch of them and they're gonna be you know,
- 27:41doing that on Thursday. So we've got rides, we've got things to do.
- 27:45I mean, essentially with the pregatta party on Thursday, it's at the
- 27:48ballpark. It goes from there. Yeah, Check says, uh, what
- 27:51about all those that drink and don't get a hotel? Is there an effort
- 27:53to watch out for drunk drivers? Well, what there is? Yes,
- 27:57there is, first of all, increase in enforcement, and there are a
- 28:00ton of officers that we have playing clothes and also you know, in uniform
- 28:06all around the area. Plus you can take the intoxic taxi. It's available,
- 28:10so there are options to get home without having to drive, and that's
- 28:14the important part. One thing I think you've added this year that you didn't
- 28:17have in a pass, Brian was the hot dog eating contest. That is
- 28:18right, oh Man, Tutors Biscuit World. They came on and said,
- 28:22first of all, they've got great hot dogs. They do have great hot
- 28:26dogs. A lot of people don't know that. I mean, we all
- 28:29love Tutors, and you've been in West Virginia long enough, I'm sure you
- 28:30like too. Well, you're one of us. Now. Tutors has great
- 28:34hot dogs. They really do. They really. I've always said, you
- 28:37know, if you want to just a solid cheeseburger, go to Tutors.
- 28:41You can do that. But they've got their hot dogs. And they said,
- 28:42you know, and I'm gonna say, let's say, ray, you
- 28:45know out there it's at Tutors. He said, any hot dog unique contest
- 28:49he's thought as gross, absolutely gross. Didn't want to do it before,
- 28:52and I said, only on the fourth of July. It still grows.
- 28:57But by gosh, it's American, and that is why you should do it.
- 29:00And they came on board. So they're gonna sponsor the stern Will boat
- 29:03races and also this hot dog eating contest. And you would be amazed the
- 29:08people that have already signed up for it. So we've got it's it's gonna
- 29:11be a show, and it's gonna be five thirty on July four. It's
- 29:15right on the stage and I maybe the Hosivity Orchestra will play you know something,
- 29:21the Bumblebee. Who knows what it's? You know what's I'll tell you
- 29:23a real quick story about this and we'll let you Yo Bran because I know
- 29:26you're busy. Um. I amc a hot dog eating contest one time.
- 29:30And here's the thing about people. Everybody sees it on TV. They see
- 29:33Joey Chestnut and they see the Nathans and they think, oh, I can
- 29:37do that. I can go down to my local drive in. I can.
- 29:38I can throw down five or six. You might throw down five or
- 29:41six, but if you're an amateer, you might throw up even more because
- 29:45it's not for the faint of heart. Uh. And the and the ones
- 29:48that I did because there were no quote unquote professionals there and it was just
- 29:51you know, people came down. It was it was like them, I
- 29:53won't go I'll save you the the gory details, you know. I had
- 29:57earlier. I had a man to Raymon from the city of Hurricane and they
- 30:00have their Fourth of July they have a hot dog eating contest going on there
- 30:04now. So ideally you could do both. You could both hot dog eating
- 30:07contents. I just want to wish you great luck because if you throw up,
- 30:11you're disqualified. Exactly exactly right, all right? So where can people
- 30:15find out more? Because I know that you got to you got social media,
- 30:18you got the website, and people say, well, when is this
- 30:19going on? It's a lot to take in. We're gonna be talking about
- 30:22it all week. But where is a place to go to get a solid
- 30:26list this is what happened at this time and so on. That is on
- 30:27our website, Charleston Regatta dot com. It's quite simple. But also also
- 30:33you've got Charleston Ricotta get dot com. But then you know our social media
- 30:37it's banging with all kinds of stuff and it's happening in matter of fact,
- 30:40actually, you're gonna see a ton of social media content this week, you
- 30:44know, just leading up to what's happening. But you know, it all
- 30:47kicks off on Friday. That's when we have our well watched Craftier Festival.
- 30:52Go buy tickets for that. He was incredibly popular last year. We're gonna
- 30:56do it on Capitol Street this year. Like I said, the end of
- 30:57the street, huge jumbo tron, Enjoy the crappier festival, watched the concert
- 31:02on the Jumbo drawn there. All right, Brian, and you're gonna be
- 31:06kind of worn out by the end of this week. You're already worn out
- 31:08and it's not even started yet, So we wish you the best of luck.
- 31:11Bad thanks a lot, Hey, thank you, and we'll be talking

- 34:05In Canivate for Knack County Commission, Chris Walters is in studio with us.
- 34:08Chris, good morning and welcome to the show. How are you? I'm
- 34:10great? How are you doing this morning? Before we got him doing five?
- 34:13Before we get into your campaign for county commission, while you're running that
- 34:16sort of thing, talk about you. I mean you're pretty well known here
- 34:20in Charles who You've had a lot of different hats. But to just give
- 34:22us the bio, the quick thirty to forty five seconds on Chris Walters,
- 34:25who are you? Yeah? Sure, born and raised here in Kanak County.
- 34:28Grew up in Cross Lanes, the love of my life. My wife
- 34:31Elizabeth was born and raised here as well. She grew up right by Lola's
- 34:36Pizza. I went to Capitol High School. I started my family here,
- 34:40went through school here, have a business on Capitol Street, Integrity and Churance
- 34:45Group. You know, Canall County has been a passion of mine. I
- 34:47love this area, I love the community. The people are amazing and I
- 34:52really want to come back here after going to school and at w VU.
- 34:57I went to school at Collegium Simmy Toss and Saul Poland. I've been in
- 35:00different parts of the world, but you know, West Virginia has always been
- 35:04home. It's always called to me. And that's why whenever I laid my
- 35:07roots, I made sure to do it here in Knall County. And as
- 35:08I said, you know, and you mentioned too, you've been in the
- 35:12legislature, in the private industry with your insurance. What do you what have
- 35:15you learned and all these things that you think would make it make you a
- 35:20good accounidate for Kannak County Commission. Yeah, as you mentioned, I was
- 35:23in the legislature. I was a senator here represented Knall County as a senator,
- 35:27and you know, I was vice chair of Finance. I know this
- 35:30group that's in the legislature now. Craig Blair, the President of Senate,
- 35:35was my sweet mate whenever I was a senator and worked with them. And
- 35:38I think, you know the relationship with the legislature and the county has been
- 35:44rocky in the past, and I think it's something that can be mended where
- 35:46we can work together really, really well. And we can create a lot
- 35:50of things that are great here for Kenall County. I've learned about different types
- 35:53of projects from a unique aspect. Tiff districts is something I think is really
- 35:59important, especially when growing a county and you look at some of the other
- 36:04areas and how they've done their growth. Like you had a Hurricane on for
- 36:07example, earlier today they have eight thousand people. Look how amazing the city
- 36:12of Hurricane is doing. Look at all the water parks, all the things
- 36:14that they have for their community. We have one hundred and eighty thousand people
- 36:17in Kinall County. There's so much that we can be doing by utilizing these
- 36:22types of districts. Talking with Chris Walters again, who is going to be
- 36:24a candidate for a county commission? Why so early on there? And I
- 36:29ask a lot of candidates about this. I mean, you know, used
- 36:31to be back in the day it was Labor Day. You kick it off
- 36:34at Labor Day, so maybe a little bit before that. Why make the
- 36:37announcement so early? You know, you get out early. And the reason
- 36:39for that is is these elections cost an abhorrant amount of money to run.
- 36:45I mean, it is disgusting how much money gets put into these things,
- 36:47not just you know, by the candidates themselves, but outside groups into all
- 36:51this coming in. And in order for you to be able to get your
- 36:53message out, you have to start fundraising earlier and earlier. The cost of
- 36:58poker has gone up, and have enough chips to write my own table ticket
- 37:01to sit at the table. So I have to get help. I have
- 37:04to get community involvement. I have to do a lot of legwork, you
- 37:07know, especially depending on who the other person is that decides to run,
- 37:10because I know there's gonna be a number of people that look at running at
- 37:14this race. Yeah, and I have to address the elephant in the room,
- 37:17and that is the problems and controversy concerning current Cana County Commissioner Kent Carper.
- 37:22Of course his health issues and the most important thing right now, But
- 37:25there's a there's baggage here and I'm not gonna delve into this too deeply because
- 37:30as you and I were talking in to break here here to run your race,
- 37:32the Commissioner Carper has been accused of of of of loud behaviors now report
- 37:37service and says he was accused of committing that loot act out of Daniel bind
- 37:39Parks in an email to the girlfriend allegedly of the police officer that was offering
- 37:45or that was investigating um, basically offering her a job right asking she'd have
- 37:50any interests in it. There's any of this way into your decision to run
- 37:54for county commission. You know, I've wanted to run for a while.
- 37:57I've looked at the seat. You know, I have a different perspective of
- 38:00what to do here in Kanall County. I've got some ideas that I've looked
- 38:04at doing and trying to do that haven't moved forward in the with you know,
- 38:08the current way things are going. For example, I want to see,
- 38:14and this is pretty amazing to me, right behind Buffalo Wild Wings and
- 38:16cross Lanes. If you go down that hill, you hit the Nitro St.
- 38:20Albans Bridge. The fact that a road has not been built from right
- 38:23there to the Nitro st Albans Bridge, which would open the heart of Saint
- 38:28Albans to the interstate exit, increasing property values for everyone in Saint Albans,
- 38:31opening up one hundred and eighty acres for commercial development for you know, shopping
- 38:37malls, for hotels to service the New Shawnee sports complex, everything. The
- 38:42fact that that one road hasn't been built is crazy to me. You know,
- 38:45I wanted to run because I see a lot of things that we can
- 38:47do that are exciting things for different parts of this community, that we can
- 38:52move our county forward. And that's why I got involved. I talked to
- 38:55my wife about it, We've prayed about it, and we came together and
- 38:58say, you know what, let's go want ahead and do this. We
- 39:00love the county, we have a passion for it, and we just want
- 39:02to give back to this place that's given so much to us. Five ety
- 39:06Live brought to you parted by Generations Physical Therapy seven convenient locations along I sixty
- 39:10four, and they're hiring from LIGHTSNSE to technically trained staff. For more information,
- 39:14to visit Generations PT dot com. As you said, Chris, there
- 39:17may be several people that throw their hat in the proverbial ring. And you
- 39:22know, regardless of the current controversy with the county commissioner, I mean,
- 39:27anytime that you go in and you try to unseat someone, should you you
- 39:30know, obviously make it that far if you try to unseat somebody that's been
- 39:32in an office, regardless of party or regardless situation that long, it can
- 39:37be very difficult. Are you ready for the fight? Yeah? Absolutely?
- 39:39I mean he's been there since I was seven years old. I mean I
- 39:44now, I'm a business owner with a family, so great name, recognition,
- 39:47a long legacy, everything, and it's always tough to overcome. But
- 39:52I believe that working hard, getting out knocking on doors, talking to people
- 39:57and showing what I am going to try to do for this county should do
- 40:00really well whenever it comes to voters making their decision on who they want to
- 40:05represent us. And I hope when you make that decision, you look at
- 40:07me, my name Chris Walters, and vote for me and give me the
- 40:10opportunity to serve you. Somebody said a text to the show, and I
- 40:15think this is a very fair question. And you talked about your proposals about
- 40:19possible building that new road there or you know, getting connecting with the Nitrous
- 40:22and all these bridge Somebody texts the show and ask for you to identify the
- 40:27funding source. So where would the money come from? Things? Absolutely,
- 40:29Tift district. So what a Tift district is is this, It's really simple.
- 40:34An area that's currently undeveloped and If you look just behind the area I
- 40:37talked about the Buffalo Wild Wings and Nitro Marketplace, it's all woods. There's
- 40:44literally nothing there. Whenever it comes to development, nothing's being developed there.
- 40:47You put a four lane road down there to the bridge, all of a
- 40:51sudden you have more area access to be able to build those hotels, those
- 40:55shopping complexes, everything. And then by having all those new tenants, all
- 41:00those new buildings, everything in there, they're going to be producing money.
- 41:02They're going to be paying taxes. Those taxes would pay for that road.
- 41:07That's how those work. You know, the City of Hurricane does tiff districts
- 41:09all the time. That's where a lot of their money comes to be able
- 41:13to grow and do so well. You look at so many areas throughout the
- 41:16United States, new ballparks going in those are tiff districts. You know.
- 41:21We utilize these financial formulas in order to bring economic development and prosperity for people
- 41:27without raising their taxes. And that's really what I want to do. I
- 41:30want to see more economic prosperity for Kanall County. I don't want to raise
- 41:34people's taxes. I want to look at giving tax breaks, and I also
- 41:37want to look at helping business owners, small business owners in this county.
- 41:40You know, the County Commission has been doing some to help out small business
- 41:44owners. I want to continue that. We need to foster those who have
- 41:46opened up businesses here because every time I turn around as a business owner,
- 41:50I feel like I'm faced with another fee. I don't feel like I'm getting
- 41:52help from from you know, the government officials in the area. It's hey,
- 41:57we're from the government, here's what we need from you. Not hey,
- 41:59we're from the government. How can we help you? And it's time
- 42:01to turn that conversation around. One. Are some other things as we close
- 42:05here that you would like to do? Infrastructure projects, water, any of
- 42:10the talking points. Absolutely, I've worked with I've worked with some businesses looking
- 42:14at coming to Kanall County, and you can't find a great centralized location of
- 42:20available buildings available, large plots of land. Speaking about what opportunities they have,
- 42:25like take down in the Quincy Mall. Here in West Virginia, you
- 42:29have rail, you have barge, you have easy access to the inner State.
- 42:31You've got probably one hundred and sixty thousand square feet of available buildings that
- 42:36can be moved into. You've got great opportunity for light manufacturing there. You
- 42:39have tons of land right between the Walmart and Riverside High School in order to
- 42:44develop a new manufacturing facility. I think there's so many places that are prime
- 42:49for manufacturing here in this county that we're not getting the word out enough.
- 42:52We need to work with our Economic Development Office of the state. We need
- 42:57to be sending letters out to try to get more manufact actures to come here.
- 43:00And look, you know, since the Trump administration put tariffs on international
- 43:06manufacturers trying to bring their goods here, it's opened up the opportunity for so
- 43:09many manufacturers to start here in the United States and to develop here in West
- 43:14Virginia. We need to do a better job of reaching out to these companies
- 43:17saying, hey, this is available. How can we help you locate and
- 43:21utilize our amazing workforce we have here. This was the chemical value of the
- 43:24world with everyone that we have with great resources and knowledge of that industry,
- 43:31and yet we aren't doing more to bring more of that here. We aren't
- 43:36doing more to bring manufacturing here where we have able body workers who want to
- 43:39go to work, who have these trades and these knowledge and if it's somebody
- 43:45that was in the coal fields, they could easily be trained to move over
- 43:47to a manufacturer. There's so much we can do in Kanall County, and
- 43:51I'm excited to have the opportunity to at least talk about it and hopefully move
- 43:54forward and do it if I'm elected as County Commissioner. Chris Walters, It's

- 49:36to the media last week between Commissioner Carper and what we're being told is the
- 49:43girlfriend of the police officer that was dispatched to the Daniel Boone Park back on
- 49:49May fifteenth. The officer was called to the park after a nine one one
- 49:52call came in reporting the man engaged in what was called lewd behavior and the
- 49:58silver van in the park. Commissioner Carper sent the email to a lady who
- 50:04works as an assistant to the county commission asking her if she would be interested
- 50:13in a job as superintendent out at Big Ben Golf Course. Now, Commissioner
