Transcript
- 0:31Speaker 1: All right, this is p from Asiferum and our new album,
- 0:34Speaker 1: winter Storm is about to hit the stores. And I
- 0:38Speaker 1: could say this is the most serious album what we
- 0:41Speaker 1: have ever done so far, So it's gonna be serious.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Great. Can you tell us how winter Storm was born?
- 0:51Speaker 1: Well, it all started kind of fast. After the Elastic
- 0:56Speaker 1: album was released in the beginning of the pandemic at
- 1:01Speaker 1: twenty twenty and twenty twenty one, we started to work
- 1:05Speaker 1: on the new stuff since there was kind of nothing
- 1:08Speaker 1: happening around the world. So, first of all, it was
- 1:14Speaker 1: Marcus who wrote all the music for this one, and
- 1:19Speaker 1: he had this grand vision of having like one huge
- 1:23Speaker 1: epic song basically throughout the album that and then we
- 1:31Speaker 1: kind of tried to figure out how to make that
- 1:34Speaker 1: one work, but it was just too much, too much
- 1:38Speaker 1: of a thing to make it happen and work out
- 1:42Speaker 1: really well. So then we just chopped it off to
- 1:44Speaker 1: the parts that we seem to be fitting well together
- 1:48Speaker 1: and made some songs out of that one that that
- 1:53Speaker 1: kind of way, So it.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Was kind of out of one song. Is that right
- 1:56Speaker 2: that you just took that?
- 1:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that was his grand vision of it. He wanted
- 2:00Speaker 1: to have it like that, But yeah, it was too
- 2:05Speaker 1: difficult to make it work. We just couldn't handle that
- 2:09Speaker 1: kind of piece of information. So then we just went
- 2:14Speaker 1: went on with the traditional song by song stop.
- 2:18Speaker 2: So did the break between the last album and this
- 2:20Speaker 2: album really help you guys hone in on what you
- 2:23Speaker 2: wanted Winter Storm to be?
- 2:28Speaker 1: Kind of? Yeah, you know, the when the world stopped
- 2:31Speaker 1: at twenty twenty, you know, it gave us, well everybody
- 2:35Speaker 1: a lot of time to figure stuff out. Since since
- 2:39Speaker 1: I joined the band in two thousand and four, we've
- 2:43Speaker 1: been kind of going on NonStop. We never had any
- 2:47Speaker 1: any longer break, just like a month here, month or
- 2:50Speaker 1: two here and there, you know, between tours and stuff.
- 2:53Speaker 1: So this was kind of like a mandatory long summer vacation. Yeah,
- 2:59Speaker 1: so you know, get a little bit different perspective, like
- 3:02Speaker 1: how easily it all can end in a heartbeat basically,
- 3:06Speaker 1: And I guess that would also switched over the kind
- 3:12Speaker 1: of like the songwriting process that Marcos really felt that
- 3:17Speaker 1: if it's not ready, we're not going to go to
- 3:19Speaker 1: the studio, so he really wanted to to make sure
- 3:22Speaker 1: that this one will definitely hit the spot.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, well I definitely think you guys did that
- 3:28Speaker 2: there with that one. I saw that you guys released
- 3:31Speaker 2: a limited edition winter Storm Chili jam, which is so cool.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Which one of you likes chili? And how hot is it?
- 3:40Speaker 1: It actually not that hot. It's kind of like on
- 3:44Speaker 1: a medium plus hotness, if you want to say so.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I'm not so big of a fan of the chili
- 3:51Speaker 1: stuff when it goes like really hot. Yeah yeah, I
- 3:55Speaker 1: just you know, start to sweat a lot and feel
- 3:58Speaker 1: nauseous with that. But this sauce is really, really, really good.
- 4:03Speaker 1: It's a little bit on the sweet side, you know,
- 4:05Speaker 1: like a sweet and sour style. It's really nice, really
- 4:09Speaker 1: good sauce.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Oh that's awesome. What song of the new album is
- 4:13Speaker 2: your favorite so far?
- 4:17Speaker 1: I'm really much into the Victorious. We got a lot
- 4:21Speaker 1: of ease on this one.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So yeah, good and well. That leads me to my
- 4:26Speaker 2: next question. I love the music video for Winterstorm Vigilantes
- 4:31Speaker 2: and how we're given like a folks sort of story
- 4:33Speaker 2: at the beginning before it explodes into a wall of sound.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Do you guys all come up with the concepts for
- 4:38Speaker 2: the music videos or is it just sort of one
- 4:41Speaker 2: person that calls the shots.
- 4:45Speaker 1: I would say a lot of the ideas come from
- 4:48Speaker 1: our bass player Sammy, who is mainly responsible for all
- 4:52Speaker 1: the lyrics for it, so he kind of has to
- 4:56Speaker 1: the vision in his head and so far they've been
- 4:59Speaker 1: working good, so we have no arguments about that one.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I noticed there's a lot of like snow
- 5:05Speaker 2: and all of that and ice. Do you actually play
- 5:07Speaker 2: in those locations or is it all green screen?
- 5:11Speaker 1: It's all green screen.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Oh it is, like, yes, well it looks very realistic.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Well, thank you very much. Yeah. We have played outdoors
- 5:21Speaker 1: in the wintertime a few times shooting a music video
- 5:24Speaker 1: and it looks good on video, but it's not so
- 5:27Speaker 1: much fun to be freezing your ass off in there.
- 5:30Speaker 3: No.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I can imagine in a finish winter as well, that
- 5:32Speaker 2: would be very cold. You've been in the band since
- 5:35Speaker 2: two thousand and four. What does Ensafara.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Mean to you? Kind of grown up into it a
- 5:45Speaker 1: lot since two thousand and four when the guys asked
- 5:48Speaker 1: me to join for the first European tour, when they
- 5:51Speaker 1: just split up with Yari when he started to record
- 5:54Speaker 1: his first Winter Sign album. I was just about to
- 5:58Speaker 1: be a substitute for the tour yea, So it was
- 6:03Speaker 1: just like, what was it three or four weeks European
- 6:05Speaker 1: tour at that point, and it went fairly well, I guess.
- 6:10Speaker 1: And then there was some summer festivals coming up and
- 6:14Speaker 1: they asked if I could do those ones. I'm like sure,
- 6:16Speaker 1: And here I'm still like twenty years later, so I
- 6:21Speaker 1: think there's something in it that pulls me into it.
- 6:25Speaker 1: You know, the music is very much different from my
- 6:29Speaker 1: own style and taste, so it's an it brings also
- 6:35Speaker 1: a little bit different perspective for the for the musical stuff,
- 6:38Speaker 1: and also you know, it's a it's a different thing
- 6:41Speaker 1: what I can get to do. Yeah.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah, how would you describe then your taste as opposed
- 6:46Speaker 2: to if it differs from insafarian.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I'm a lot more of the heavy metal, trash and
- 6:54Speaker 1: speed metal dude.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, yeah, not so much more the melodic sort of.
- 6:59Speaker 1: The melod yes, yes, of course, but the folk thing
- 7:04Speaker 1: has kind of never been that much in my blood,
- 7:08Speaker 1: if I can say. But yeah, with aper males make
- 7:11Speaker 1: so great stuff, yeah, it's hard not to like it.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Yeah, No, definitely agree. I like I like quite a
- 7:19Speaker 2: bit of melodic death metal and that sort of thing,
- 7:21Speaker 2: but the folk, again, you're right, like, I don't, I
- 7:23Speaker 2: don't particularly feel drawn to it, But with Enceferum it's different.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I'm like, no, I love.
- 7:28Speaker 1: This, yeah exactly.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I've often wondered how metal vocalists prepare for a show.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Do you do a lot of warming up or does
- 7:37Speaker 2: it just come more naturally to do those harsh vocals.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I have never needed to do any warm ups. I
- 7:46Speaker 1: just shout basically one time before going on stage and
- 7:49Speaker 1: that's that's it.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Far out it looks so like some Does your voice
- 7:53Speaker 2: get sore at the end?
- 7:56Speaker 1: Nope, my gosh, never lost my voice because of that.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Wow break of nature. So yeah, do you ever pinch
- 8:08Speaker 2: yourself at just how much Insofarm has grown and the
- 8:11Speaker 2: success that's followed.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Every now and then you get to see that one,
- 8:17Speaker 1: But it's it's not so noticeable by yourself when you're
- 8:22Speaker 1: kind of like doing it every single day. You know,
- 8:25Speaker 1: it's it's kind of hard. But usually with with the tours,
- 8:29Speaker 1: when you meet up the fans and you get a
- 8:31Speaker 1: lot of a lot more feedback than just on social
- 8:34Speaker 1: media and stuff like this, so you can hear the
- 8:36Speaker 1: impact of the music from different situations in life and
- 8:40Speaker 1: stuff that one gives gives a good feeling always to hear.
- 8:45Speaker 2: And do you also do you feel the vibe from
- 8:48Speaker 2: the crowd when you're up there playing as well? Do
- 8:50Speaker 2: you feel the energy? I suppose?
- 8:53Speaker 1: Ah, yes, absolutely, Yeah, that's awesome.
- 8:57Speaker 2: And how is how is touring for you? Are you
- 9:01Speaker 2: guys obviously you guys will get along and your friends.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Is it pretty relaxed or do you guys like to
- 9:06Speaker 2: go out and do things?
- 9:08Speaker 1: There isn't that much free time on a tour when
- 9:11Speaker 1: you have a show days that's the one thing what
- 9:15Speaker 1: kind of sucks that you're basically stuck in the bus
- 9:18Speaker 1: or backstage inside the venue. There's not too much time
- 9:23Speaker 1: to go check out cities and whatnot. But days off, yeah,
- 9:28Speaker 1: we tend to then basically separate, you know. Everybody goes
- 9:32Speaker 1: their own different directions. Yeah.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:34Speaker 1: You don't want to see the same guys for twenty
- 9:36Speaker 1: years and spend your day off with them at the
- 9:38Speaker 1: same time.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Yeah, no, true. How do you all keep the energy
- 9:44Speaker 2: of the band up? Seeing as it has gone for
- 9:46Speaker 2: so long? How are you guys still going?
- 9:50Speaker 1: Excellent question. You know, if you would see the band
- 9:54Speaker 1: like thirty minutes before showtime, yeah, somebody's still napping on
- 9:58Speaker 1: the couch almost and you know, just checking out their
- 10:02Speaker 1: phones or whatnot. Nobody is that that much paying attention
- 10:05Speaker 1: to the upcoming show. But I guess it comes from
- 10:12Speaker 1: just like when it's showtime, something switches inside. It's like
- 10:17Speaker 1: game face on and good thing.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah, can you give me a few of your favorite
- 10:22Speaker 2: bands at the moment.
- 10:24Speaker 1: At the moment, if you've got I was just checking
- 10:29Speaker 1: out the latest album from Black Dalli and Murder.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Oh yes, yeah, that's that's a.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Really nice one. And yeah, what else did I check
- 10:39Speaker 1: out lately?
- 10:41Speaker 2: Well, of course, ah, yes.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I just saw them also during the summer here
- 10:48Speaker 1: in Helsinet. They played at the festival. It was really good.
- 10:51Speaker 1: They played an immortal set. It was really cool. And
- 10:56Speaker 1: then yeah, it's been kind of like a black metal
- 10:58Speaker 1: ish boo going on lately since you know Ultimate is coming.
- 11:03Speaker 1: There's a get darker and rainy black metal fit. So
- 11:06Speaker 1: also I have about to catch a better from a
- 11:09Speaker 1: long time, So it was pretty much these bands are
- 11:14Speaker 1: going on right now.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Yeah, what time is it there at the moment?
- 11:17Speaker 1: Actually right now we are at just past one o'clock
- 11:22Speaker 1: in the afternoon.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Oh wow, okay, and is it getting to the point
- 11:26Speaker 2: where there's less sunlight or am I in the wrong.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Absolutely right, we are getting off from the sunlight. Today's
- 11:36Speaker 1: running actually outside, so particularly nice weather not raining about
- 11:41Speaker 1: plus ten degrees celsius today, so okay, it's a nice day.
- 11:45Speaker 2: It's terrible. Do you still get people dressing up in
- 11:49Speaker 2: mediev medieval attire and war paint at your shows?
- 11:55Speaker 1: We actually do.
- 11:56Speaker 2: That's so cool.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I would love it is. Yeah, they got the the
- 12:00Speaker 1: drinking horns and you know, plastic swords and stuff with
- 12:04Speaker 1: them at the real like you know for outfit leather
- 12:08Speaker 1: done like really well, yes, it's it's very cool to
- 12:11Speaker 1: see people's dedication for it too. Yeah.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that's hectic and the like Scanda in folklore obviously
- 12:18Speaker 2: a big part of your music, I.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Would say, big part issue. Yes, there is a lot
- 12:27Speaker 1: of like different like lyrical themes. What we have gone
- 12:31Speaker 1: through with the albums. Not everything is necessary has anything
- 12:35Speaker 1: to do with Viking or pagan or anything like that.
- 12:39Speaker 5: Ye.
- 12:40Speaker 1: We have, for example, a song that goes through basically
- 12:46Speaker 1: playing poker, the song called Two of Spades. That's also
- 12:51Speaker 1: our tribute to Motorheads.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I wasna very similar.
- 12:56Speaker 1: To yeah, kind of kind of our version of Motorhead
- 13:01Speaker 1: but also there's like a Western teams as well, says
- 13:05Speaker 1: there's a Marcus is a huge fan of Western music
- 13:10Speaker 1: in the movies, so you can hear a lot of thoselies.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Also there is a lot of Irish folk melodies, yes,
- 13:19Speaker 1: stuff gone in forms music.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I feel like it's really hard to just
- 13:25Speaker 2: put you guys in a box and say that you
- 13:27Speaker 2: are this genre or that genre. And even with your
- 13:30Speaker 2: lyrics as well. I feel like it's not just one
- 13:32Speaker 2: thing that you guys talk about.
- 13:33Speaker 1: It's yeah, Maria, yeah, exactly.
- 13:37Speaker 2: You have a lot of fans here in Australia who
- 13:40Speaker 2: want to see you guys. Is Australia are going to
- 13:42Speaker 2: be on the tour list anytime soon?
- 13:46Speaker 1: Not yet on the schedule, but I hope so, yeah,
- 13:49Speaker 1: that will be cool. Yeah, Like on a couple of
- 13:51Speaker 1: previous interviews I've just done over there, you guys are
- 13:54Speaker 1: located so far away from here, you know, yeah, literally
- 13:58Speaker 1: on the other side of the world.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:00Speaker 2: How long does it t to get here?
- 14:02Speaker 3: Do you know?
- 14:02Speaker 2: Well, you've been.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Here, it's it's usually around a thirty hour trip, yeah,
- 14:09Speaker 1: one way, yeah, no, depending on the flights, but usually
- 14:13Speaker 1: it takes about that twenty five thirty something hours to
- 14:17Speaker 1: get there.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Yeah, no, not fun. I find finish such an interesting
- 14:22Speaker 2: and challenging at times. Language. Can you tell me some
- 14:25Speaker 2: of your favorite finish sayings or finish words.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Oh that's a tricky one. Well these are there ones.
- 14:35Speaker 1: WLL we usually tell you know, all the tourists who
- 14:39Speaker 1: are visiting over here when they want to lare some
- 14:42Speaker 1: dounb finished words. There's one called herlicane curlcan okay, yep, yeah, yeah,
- 14:49Speaker 1: that's like cheers when you're you know, cheering up with
- 14:52Speaker 1: a drink. Yeah, now I like that. But you also
- 14:58Speaker 1: have some funny sayings in Australia as well, Yes we do.
- 15:02Speaker 1: I forgot the version how how it's said said on
- 15:07Speaker 1: the over there, but it was like it's so hot
- 15:10Speaker 1: that the flip flop smelt on the asphalt. But there
- 15:14Speaker 1: was something about thongs. Yeah. Yeah. When I heard that
- 15:18Speaker 1: my first time, when our driver was saying that, I'm like,
- 15:21Speaker 1: you're wearing thongs for what?
- 15:26Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 15:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yes, yeah, these kind of things. I think
- 15:30Speaker 1: every country has has their own on weird saying what
- 15:34Speaker 1: if you're not from there, it's really difficult to understand.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, I love them. I also recently saw
- 15:40Speaker 2: a video of you on your Instagram and you're dancing
- 15:43Speaker 2: next to a girl who was busking.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Ah yeah, that was our accordion player. Yeah yeah, we
- 15:56Speaker 1: had some free time at the studio long time ago,
- 16:00Speaker 1: and then we decided to make this silly video to
- 16:04Speaker 1: go collect some collect some coins so we can buy
- 16:08Speaker 1: ingredients to bake some buns at the studio.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Oh that's classic. Oh I thought it was just some
- 16:15Speaker 2: random person that you decided to dance next to. That
- 16:18Speaker 2: was so funny.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, not random, totally planned. Yeah, just for very information.
- 16:25Speaker 1: We didn't get any money, but you know it was fun.
- 16:28Speaker 3: What Yeah?
- 16:29Speaker 2: Oh that sucks, oh dear, all right, well, thank you
- 16:33Speaker 2: so much, Pete. Fans of Ensaferum can catch the new
- 16:36Speaker 2: album winter Storm on October eighteen. We can't wait to
- 16:39Speaker 2: hear it in full. Is there anything else you'd like
- 16:41Speaker 2: to say about the album or tell you fans?
- 16:45Speaker 1: Hopefully everybody enjoys the album. It's a cool one, fairly
- 16:49Speaker 1: serious from Enspherm's point of view, and hopefully we get
- 16:53Speaker 1: to catch you all somewhere there down under soon.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Enough, hopefully very soon. With all love that there's so
- 17:00Speaker 2: many metal fans here and I know anso fem is
- 17:03Speaker 2: a huge, highly requested one all the time, so we
- 17:06Speaker 2: hope you can make it.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, thanks all.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Right, thank you so much, Pete, Thank.
- 17:11Speaker 6: You of the late diamond, lost place, gave skin to
- 18:30Speaker 6: battle with the frost, bash despair, the dacent u a
- 18:40Speaker 6: hard circle and given a.
