- 0:00Hello and welcome to the Everyday Eurasia podcast,
- 0:04Inspiring Faith for Every Day. Each day we are on a journey
- 0:08with Jesus in our churches, our homes, our workplaces, and in so
- 0:13many different places around the world.
- 0:16Is it beautiful that no matter where we are, we can walk with
- 0:20him every single day? Jesus is the one who connects us
- 0:24all and stands at the very center of our lives day after
- 0:28day. Through this podcast, you'll
- 0:30hear voices from across the region sharing devotionals that
- 0:34reminds us of God's presence in our everyday moments.
- 0:44Hello friends, Happy New Year. Today is January the 1st and my
- 0:50name is Mark Lowe. I'm the Director of the Eurasia
- 0:54Region Church of the Nazarene. My reading this morning is from
- 0:58John chapter 1 verses one through 5.
- 1:03In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
- 1:08the Word was God. He was in the beginning with
- 1:11God. All things were made through
- 1:13him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.
- 1:18In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
- 1:23The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has
- 1:27not overcome it. As we step into a new year, most
- 1:32people are already thinking about what needs to change.
- 1:36They're thinking about new habits, new plans, new energy.
- 1:41But Scripture takes us some way more fundamental in the
- 1:45beginning was the Word before calendars, before goals, before
- 1:50success or failure. Christ is already there.
- 1:56John is deliberate. He takes us back before our
- 1:59beginning and reminds us that Jesus is not an add on to life,
- 2:05He is the source of life itself. John says the word was with God
- 2:13and the Word was God. That means this year does not
- 2:17begin with uncertainty, it begins with authority.
- 2:21Nothing you will face this year surprises Christ.
- 2:25Nothing overwhelms him. Nothing sits outside of his
- 2:29reach. That alone should change how we
- 2:32step into this new year. John echoes Genesis on purpose.
- 2:38Just as God spoke order into chaos in creation, Christ speaks
- 2:43order into our lives. Now many people enter a new year
- 2:48carrying unfinished business, disappointment, fatigue,
- 2:53questions they hoped would be resolved by now.
- 2:56And the temptation is to fix ourselves before coming to God.
- 3:01Scripture says the opposite. You don't come to Christ after
- 3:05you've sorted things out. You come to Christ so that he
- 3:09can bring order Where there is confusion, John continues.
- 3:17All things were made through Him and without Him was not anything
- 3:22made that was made. That includes your work.
- 3:26That includes your ministry, your family, your calling.
- 3:31Anything you tried to build this year apart from Christ will
- 3:35eventually drain you. It may look successful for a
- 3:39while, but it won't last. What is built in Him carries
- 3:43life because He is life. That is why Jesus later says in
- 3:50John 15, Apart from Me you can do nothing, not a little, not
- 3:56less efficiently, but nothing of eternal value.
- 4:02Then John gives us a phrase we need to sit with.
- 4:06He says in Him was life and the life was the light of men.
- 4:12Light in Scripture is never passive.
- 4:15Light reveals. Light exposes, light guides.
- 4:20Walking in the light means living honestly before God, not
- 4:24hiding, not pretending, not repeating all patterns just
- 4:28because they're familiar. So let me make this practical.
- 4:32At the start of this year, ask yourself, what is Christ asking
- 4:37me to stop carrying into this year?
- 4:40What is He asking me to leave behind?
- 4:43Not because it's dramatic, but because it no longer fits a life
- 4:48shaped by Him. And where is he calling me to
- 4:52take a clear, obedient step forward?
- 4:56These are not resolutions. They are alignments.
- 5:01And alignments matter because light demands a response.
- 5:05You either walk in the light or you avoid it.
- 5:10Paul says it plainly in Ephesians 5.
- 5:12Walk as children of light. That's active language.
- 5:17It's daily, it's intentional, and it's sometimes costly, but
- 5:22it leads to life. John then anchors us with one of
- 5:27the strongest statements in the Gospel.
- 5:30The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has
- 5:34not overcome it. Notice the tense.
- 5:38The light shines right now, not after things improve, not when
- 5:44circumstances cooperate. Now, whatever darkness you carry
- 5:48into this year, be it fear, regret, uncertainty, exhaustion,
- 5:54it does not get the final word. It never has, and it never will.
- 6:00Darkness doesn't overcome light. It never has in Scripture and it
- 6:06never will in your life. And this matters for how you
- 6:10live and lead this year. People don't follow titles.
- 6:15They follow clarity. They follow steadiness.
- 6:19They follow those who walk in the light they claim to believe.
- 6:24Leadership and influence in the coming year won't be about
- 6:27pushing harder. It will be about bringing the
- 6:30light of Christ into the spaces you influence, into
- 6:35conversations, decisions, moments of tension, moments of
- 6:39fatigue. So as this year begins, don't
- 6:43start with pressure, start with presence.
- 6:47Christ's presence. You don't need to see the whole
- 6:51year. You only need enough light for
- 6:54the next faithful step. That's how Scripture is always
- 6:58worked, and it still does. Let us pray.
- 7:04Lord Jesus, you stand at the beginning of all things,
- 7:08including this year. We bring you what is unfinished,
- 7:13uncertain, and heavy. Teach us to walk in your light,
- 7:18step by step. Let our lives reflect your life
- 7:22in us. For your glory we pray in Jesus
- 7:26name, Amen. Thank you for listening to the
