- 0:00SPEAKER_00: What's up everybody?
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: And thank you to you.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: This is the once a week podcast brought to you by you.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to start off with my opening segment right now.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Do a thought exercise.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Let's sit here and pretend that the year is 2014.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: You don't know about Chris Algieri's career.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: But he's stepping in the ring after beating Manny Taylor,
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Emmanuel Taylor for those that look at BoxRec.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Goes in.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: With a crude slugger named Ruslan Provodnikov, who's a heavy favorite.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: The fight starts disastrous.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: His eye swells.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: He's down.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: It's about as bad as it could go.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: And then Algieri shows courage and conviction,
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: changes his life,
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: becomes an icon for the rest of time in boxing by winning a world title
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: under distress and piggybacks that into a Manny Pacquiao fight.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Who would have thought it?
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Well...
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Nestor Bravo got to try to live that dream when he took
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: on Isak Pitbull Cruise this past weekend.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: The problem is not all dreams are saintly.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: They're not all pristine.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: They don't always go the way you expect.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately, in Bravo's situation, his dream quickly turned into a nightmare.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Bravo had shown power at some levels in the sport, dropping seemingly durable opponents.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: He had looked limited, his ability to cut off the ring at times.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: But still, there were questions about could he give Cruz issues?
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And within about a half a round,
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: we saw Cruz's aggression, physicality, and strength left behind.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Bravo befuddled, confused, and looking for answers.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: It felt as though he was fighting off of instincts which led him to lose points and get dropped.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: He was starting out just as bad almost as Algieri started out.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: The problem was Algieri had a path to victory and a game plan.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Whatever Bravo's game plan was went out the window after the first round.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: The hope of landing a big punch seemingly obscured by the fact
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: that Pitbull was relentless coming forward Trying his luck
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: to land even more damning blows after damning blows.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: The inevitable result,
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: a highlight reel left hook knockout for Pitbull Cruz,
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: will be shared amongst social media.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: When Pitbull gets a big,
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: high profile fight,
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: you'll probably see that clip with an announcer screaming and yelling.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: And for Bravo,
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: he goes back to obscurity,
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: probably now having to fight up and coming prospects who want to get to this stage.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: This is the inevitable thing we see.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: When you want to go to the big stage,
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: not every story is going to be good, and we have to be okay with that.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: A fighter like Bravo had been grinding for 11 or so years to see where he fit in
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: at this point in his career.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: There was a reasonable enough suspicion,
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: at least based on people's concerns around if Pitbull crews can fight it this way,
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: class, to wonder, hey, Maybe this might actually be a tough fight.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: And when it doesn't go that way,
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: rather than condemning matchups like this,
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: why don't we just simply say,
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: sometimes guys take the chance and they find out that at this point,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: at this moment,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: either this matchup or this level of fighter just isn't where they're at in
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: the sport.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: And that's okay.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: It's a harsh reality, but it is the truth.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Coming off of this weekend, I think that's the best takeaway.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Okay, the rest of the notes, I've got a lot of questions that came in.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Recording it a little bit early, kind of cheating on the exam, but I do do a paywall podcast.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Did say doo-doo,
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: so that might make someone giggle or I might just be very,
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: very immature, struggling to find my notes.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, here we are.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: So if you want to get them in, Probably will take this week off for the Paywall Podcast.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: I don't think that the Japanese fights are going to be needle movers in terms
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: of drama or fight line stories that people will want.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: But if you do, maybe I'll do it.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Let's go into the first question.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: John Hedges looked like crap midweek.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: He wore a shirt during the weigh-in to hide his body.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: He wore a robe in the post-fight interview.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Um...
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Did Brown headbutt in reply to holding?
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: He won't be treated like a star A-side versus Vidal Riley like he was versus Hedges.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, to me, it's hard to assess Hedges.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Hedges had always looked good but not great.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: With Brown, I thought he did pretty decent.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: He just couldn't keep up.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Vidal Riley is a tough one
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: because I think my whole career I've underestimated how good he is and...
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: That still probably continues.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: So just bring on a good fight.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Jesus Ramos questions.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Ramos looks great.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Big at the open workout.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Ann Pressler.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Nurse Lintoloff looks like a stick.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: So most likely Nurse Lintoloff is going to rehydrate many more pounds than Ramos
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: and be bigger fight night.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Ramos looks like he has a longer similar reach.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Ramos really ducked Nurse Lenthal off, laughed my ass off, can't trust a PBC fighter.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think that he probably got sick, so I think it's a little unfair to throw that.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: And then Shiraz ducks Janabek, Kazak, Boxers.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Unions.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: You realize that big U.S. Sports League violate antitrust laws all the time, right?
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's like...
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I mean...
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Once you go into these topics of unionization and basically procedures as a whole,
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: you're going into like years and years of really boring litigation
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: because there's whole things that are built upon it.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Because I guess the inherent thing is you're trying to figure out a way
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: In all walks of life, right,
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: where workers are compensated and protected so like their rights aren't violated
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: at any moment just by their employer,
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: but at the same time that they're an efficiently run thing.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: So they make money and in theory you're trying to build something
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: where everything kind of is even but typically things get leveraged towards
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: who makes the most money and whatever.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: So I think that's why most people are very sympathetic towards the fighters
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: because they often have the lowest stake.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: They get around that through collective bargaining with unions.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: But I mean I think that the point is a collective bargaining agreement with
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: the union is that there is – A form of a debate with a representative that creates
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: a dialogue.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: A salary cap is unlawful.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, is it or isn't?
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think that in theory is an ethical question, right?
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: That goes down to more ethics than law, right?
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Because I think that I don't know.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: You'd have to throw it in the comments if you can find out a law that does that.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: I think that the ethics to that would be that you're trying to create
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: the most interesting product forward.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: So some markets like New York City are going to have bigger revenue just based on
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: the population and people's connection, right?
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Sports teams,
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: if you move to like Ohio,
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: but you're from New York City, sometimes you buy merchandise to be the New York guy.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: And by proxy,
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: you're going to have a larger revenue stream because of the Where you live,
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: the people,
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: the salaries they make, and kind of the fan base being all across the thing.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Collecting, bargaining gets around it.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Boxing is actually more pure than your sports leagues.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, it is and it isn't.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: It's just, to me, it's unregulated capitalism.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: And we might be seeing some form of regulations going into it.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Maybe we'll just keep going in there.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: I just feel like right now it's political.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: It's a political system.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, they won't tell you about the role of the manager.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Um...
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, let's keep going.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: All I'd say is that where we rate him,
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: we need more Pitbull Cruise type fighters more
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: than we need Ryan Garcia type fighters.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: And I think that's a great...
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Great take is it doesn't really matter where Pitbull Cruz fits into boxing.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: He should just fit into boxing.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: A guy who's willing to take fights, exciting for the most part.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: The times he loses is because someone has a strategy to avoid running into him.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: There is a really exciting aspect to fighters who fit that bill.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Pitbull is ranked number 15 at 140 pounds per box rec.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: You'd think Cruz is a top 25 or top 20 super lightweight boxer.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: I think he's a fringe top 10.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: But I would like a little bit more of a resume to decide that.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: I definitely agree with Chris Mannix that
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: a fighter like Ernesto Tito Mercado does not really have the wins,
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: in my opinion, for him to be ranked above Pitbull.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: But it feels like right now in boxing, we're doing a lot of eye tests.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Remember Gervonta Davis?
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: He's on the pound-for-pound list.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: People couldn't really tell me why other than he was really cool.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: So I don't know.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm looking forward to this question.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: In a way, his little brother...
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: The Lucas Ketelle's elusive emotions boxer.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: I like where this is going.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Let's read through this.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Neo Inoue's transition from knockout boxer puncher to
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: a points boxer puncher has roughly coincided with Takuma's rebuild from
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: the Tatsumi loss.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: I like this.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: How much of Takuma's rebuild lies within the emotions of a successful Ohasha gym?
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Where Takuma beat Kazuto Ioka on the undercard of Nao Inoue versus Junto Nakatani.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: And Diaya Kira successfully cut to 108 pounds to win a WBA title versus Carlos Canizales.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Huge win, by the way.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: I believe...
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Kira and then minor notes said that he rehydrated with water, doing a water cut.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: And once again, full transparency, don't care about that stuff.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: If you can make the weight,
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: I don't believe in a concept of weight bullying because you have to sacrifice
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: so much and you have to be mentally tough.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: That is a skill.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Some guys aren't going to be naturally talented.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Some guys are going to have to win in the gym or win mentally.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: So that stuff doesn't matter to me.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: That doesn't.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: I've seen guys mentally break trying to cut weight.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: So for me, I don't put that much in.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: I actually applaud guys that can do cuts like that and have longevity.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: How much does Naio undergoing the same training
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: as Takuma despite having no set fight date lead to a positive emotion in
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: the Ohasha gym?
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Well, I think, and now you're getting down to my bread and butter.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: So this is the number one where I'm going to answer this question,
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: my bread and butter thing that I love.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Big momentum guy.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: And I think momentum and emotion kind of go hand in hand when everything is going right.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of people are smiling in the gym and going, hey, what we're doing is right.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: What we're doing is good.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: We're the best out there.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: And you start to see when like One guy wins a fight and another guy wins a fight
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: and another guy.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: Even like the lower level guys start to feel kind of top tier.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: And I think it reinforces the training.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: I think it makes people more excited to try to develop.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: And I think it really gets a snowball effect.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Where everybody is just starting to compete and wanting to see how far they can go.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Has Takuma discovered power?
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Takuma beat tension wide to win the vacant WBC Bantamweight title.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: And he knocked down Ioka at least twice to defend it.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Or has Takuma benefited from favorable matchups?
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: I'm going to say it's in between.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Because I think tension...
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: We don't fully know what he is.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: So I think the tough thing for me is for years I thought he was just
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: a marketed fighter, kind of a gimmick fighter.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Then he beats a former champion in Maloney and I go, okay, there's something real there.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: He has athleticism.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: There's some traits there.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: But then against Takuma, it just felt like the experience gap was far too vast and wide.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Ioka was older in that fight.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: But I also think that Takuma,
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: in a way,
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: would be someone that would be a beloved fighter if his brother wasn't
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: the best fighter in the world right now.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: And let's go down for this.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Ioka was 37 when he fought Takuma.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: That's kind of what I'm getting at.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Ioka began his career at 105 pounds.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Tension was 7-0 when he fought a 20-2 Takuma.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's go further into this question.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Is Takuma a hype job?
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Before we get into this,
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: I'm going to say he's not a hype job just because to me what makes him
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: an interesting fighter is twofold.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Takuma has had some losses.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: He's the brother of one of the best fighters, if not the best fighter of this era in Neo Inouye.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: And he's had to constantly reinvent himself after tough fights.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: He's had to,
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: the Tosumi fight was a fight where I think we were like,
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: okay, he reached his ceiling, reinvented himself.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: And I think that's pretty tough.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Takuma lost to Nordin Olibali, who would be subsequently knocked out by Norito Donair.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: By the way, lukie note, one of the hardest punchers ever.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: And retired by a 9-9 Ricardo Martinez.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: But I think Donair did a lot of the heavy lifting for that because Donair hit like
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: a welterweight at some points.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: After rebuilding, Takuma was then set up for a vacant WBA title against older fighters.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: He knocks out Jerwin and Kanahas in defense, which,
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: by the way,
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: knocking out Jerwin and Kanahas,
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: we're seeing guys at higher weight classes not do that.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: So pretty darn good win.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Takuma is dropped by Showick.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Ashida, by the way,
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Ashida, really good fighter, in a wide points win and then loses the title to Tsumi.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: By the way, miss my guy Tsumi in the ring.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Takuma's reputation as a feather-fisted and subpar,
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Ashida performance led to tension being a wide favorite in the first fight.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: And I would say...
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Takuma feels like the anti-version of his brother.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: He feels like a speedster,
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: a guy who's more amateur style,
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: and by that I mean he throws fast punches rather quick,
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: but not all that deliberate with the stinging blows.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Does defeating a 7-0 former kickboxer and
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: a 37-year-old former strawweight actually mean anything,
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: or has Takuma found a rebirth with a resurgent Ohashi gym?
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: I think it's more that he's found something because if he wasn't what he was,
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: he was in the prime position for tension to beat him.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: If he didn't have some semblance of truth,
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: the level of confidence tension had,
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: even if he's limited, he had the athleticism and he had the confidence.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: There's something there to win that fight.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Is Nasakawa disrespecting Takuma by seeking this rematch?
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't say disrespecting.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: I would say irrational confidence guy.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: He's the irrational confidence guy who's like, Yeah, I lost, but I'm totally going to do this.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: He did beat Juan Francisco Estrada in April.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: Estrada, smaller guy, older guy.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: It's been 10 months since Takuma Inouye defeated tension wide.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: It's 10 months enough time for tension to close the gap.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: I don't think so,
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: but I think it's an absolutely thrilling and compelling matchup
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: that I wish was being shared more and more because
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: as we do this thoughts exercise around this, I'm even more excited for the fight.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: I'm like, should I do the crazed, unhinged Mom's Basement 4am podcast for this fight?
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Does the world want that?
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Maybe the world wants that.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: So I couldn't find the film.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: I'm now jumping over to some film study.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: This could be chaotic.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: I think I did this right.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Let me see.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Um...
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Okay, so there's still a couple more questions before I jump to film study.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: So there's the love of the long form content.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Lukie, about an hour seems perfect to me.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: Loving the content every week.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Also, welcome to Boxing Hell.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: The next seven years will consist of Zufa and TKO fanboys saying,
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: trust me, do your own research, look at what I said, listen up.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Um, basically the sport is in a very, very weird spot.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Let's recall also on my podcast where I brought up the OLLI Act,
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: um, people crying about the state of boxing in the U.S.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: It was Obama who, uh,
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: questioned, um,
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: what he would do for blacks,
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: refused to be specific, instead claiming rising tides lifts all boats.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Um, every other word capitalized,
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure what that means,
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: yet the same apparently did, well, um,
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: I think that the problem is most,
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: if not all politicians,
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: especially in my lifetime,
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: have always said one thing and then do another once elected.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: I probably lean more liberal, if not I am liberal, than conservative.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: So I think that seeing how this question is written,
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: it's probably more of someone that's a conservative person.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: So it seems like maybe just some of my political standpoints kind of maybe irk you
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: in a sense for whatever reason.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: So I think that the question is like there's been liberal...
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Politicians who haven't really delivered.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: I'm not really seeing the connection with Obama to a piece of legislation
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: that could possibly make fighters have less financial transparency.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Maybe leave that in the comments for next week so I can...
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: I'll go through that better if I'm missing that.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: If boxing is successful in global markets,
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: then those in the U.S.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: markets would be forced to respond and compete,
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: yet not even Joseph Heron, my buddy, advocates for global competition on his show.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: It must have been Zhang versus Joyce II at Wembley when I saw two
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: or three Chinese nationals absolutely in tears during Zhang's walkout.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: I can't find it now,
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: but I recall watching a video and Zhang asked Tyson Fury to face him to fight
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: and Fury agreed.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: The fight could have taken place in China.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: It's just an absolute clown show when U.S.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: pundits decry the state of boxing in the U.S.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: while never once mentioning how boxing power brokers refused to push a show
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: in Beijing.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: We literally had people Crying in tears at the mere sight of Zhang walking out,
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: yet Americans never questioned why boxing refused to push an entry into
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: the world's largest economy.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: I think
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: the issue around that is, first off, boxing in America is not in a good place.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Like, This weekend coming up is a prime example.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: I'm probably going to watch some of the Rising Stars promotions card
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: because I'm very excited about it.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: I might watch the Zufa card in a couple of fights,
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: but I'm going to be honest, I'll probably miss some of it too.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to see the Japanese card probably on tape delay.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: And that is not a strong weekend.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: And I start to wonder, like, am I going to miss a week of boxing?
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Like if I start missing a week of boxing and I'm as hardcore as I am
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: and I have all these different podcast shows to put out.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Where is the sport of boxing going?
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: Because there just can't be that many people that are interested.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: And I've heard people bring up the idea of, well, piracy is killing the sport.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: I don't even think we're relevant to worry about piracy.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: I almost would be excited if that piracy was an issue because
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: that would mean people want to see fights.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: I just feel like boxing isn't doing enough to even be noticed anymore.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: And I feel like fans of boxing are slowly starting to find other things to do.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: To talk about the global thing,
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: I think that you're speaking to a uniquely US perspective where people from
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: the US have never had to think outside of the world.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: For most of a lot of people from the US's lifetime, the US was the center of the world.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: Over the last probably 10 years, things have shifted.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Boxing no longer centers around Las Vegas.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: We're figuring out where the hub of boxing is, but it's no longer fully Vegas.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Things feel to be moving away.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: And the same for the sport of boxing and the same for the conversation of world issues.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: So I think when you bring up Zang...
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: That comes to the fact that most U.S. fight fans don't view the sport as a global sport.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: They don't look at things from a global perspective.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: And honestly, they probably never will because it's a uniquely U.S. perspective.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: So if there's not things happening in the U.S.,
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: a lot of people won't watch the sport because the U.S. market,
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: along with probably many other markets,
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: are going to go,
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: if it's not in a time zone that's convenient for me, I don't want to watch it.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: And that's just simply what it is.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: Let's go to some film study placeholder for Takuma in a way.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: Let's see what this is.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Okay,
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: so
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: this is some HD footage.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: This is sick.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: It's like Takuma.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: They're like at a golf course.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: I want to golf at this course with Inouye.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: They're at like a luxury golf course running up and down hills.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Takuma's definitely a little slow off the line.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: He wouldn't be playing for the Buccaneers, that's for sure.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Let's check it out.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: They're pushing a golf cart.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, this looks like a sick-ass training session.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: I see why these guys got momentum.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: They're in like a golf course that looks beautiful.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: They're pushing a golf cart up.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: People are smiling.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: They're all jacked and stuff.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: This is sick.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, now they're on a trail.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: They're running upstairs.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, the views that these guys are training in, this is like the pebble beach.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: In terms of views for boxing training.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's obvious they have deep admiration for Inouye.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, they're doing medicine ball jumps up a bunch of stairs.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: We used to do that in Piedmont, me and my buddy Bilal.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: He used to run the Rose Garden stairs like 20 times and we'd go underneath
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: and we'd come up with variations and watching them do the medicine ball hops.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: It's like that reminds me of just like stuff we would do because it would be like,
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: okay, we did about three hours in a boxing gym.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: So let's just run, figure out different ways to run upstairs and stuff.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: So, okay.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Manny's in shape.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Now they're doing bear crawls up the stairs.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Sick.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: And then they're doing piggyback rides.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: I think stairs are like one of the underrated things,
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: training things that people never talk about.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: Can you preview Suboy versus Ricardo Malajalik?
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: And by the way, thank you for the comment.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: I am going to try to get a pundit that was recommended to me this week on who speaks
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: of Who can maybe help me with Maljiki.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: I don't have a Facebook account, so I hope that I'm going to be able to watch this.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: You know you're going to an amazing place when it's only low-res, very small Facebook videos.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: Cal Berkeley hat, though.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: That is good.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: I wonder if Donito Donair Sr. is in that corner.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: Paras versus Malajika.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's see.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: He must be a puncher.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: He's a little fast.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: He's got a wide stance, that Adonis Stevenson one.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: He's loading up on something really big with the right hand.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: He leans in with his head, too.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: So he's prone for headbutts.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: He falls in with his head, and he's a clincher.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: So the big thing I see with Malajika early on is...
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Got a little bit of that Dimitri Bivol, but in the wrong way.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: So he likes to jab,
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: and then he loads up as hard as he can on a straight right when he's out of range.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: He knows how to get his head off of the line.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: His head is his third best punch.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: He throws a good jab, a good right hand, and a headbutt.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: I'm curious to see what else he's got.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's a tricky mover.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: He's a tricky mover.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: He's definitely like a formidable adversary.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Just got hit with an overhand right.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: The problem with him is he's obviously a strong puncher, but he stands very, very tall.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: And you only get away with standing very,
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: very tall if you can keep guys at the end of your jab and you really turn
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: that right hand over.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, he's not looking great.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: His distance is all messed up in this fight.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: He's struggling to stay...
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: Ineffective things.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: I'd say it's a struggle for him because of his distance comprehension.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: So let's check this out.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: World Boxing.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: I feel like World Boxing reached out to me once.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: They were like, do something with us.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: And then the minute I turn it on, it's taken on Marcel Braithwaite.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: And I'm being sold at Power Bank.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: They're like, buy this, buy this.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's kind of the same thing over and over in this film study.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: He's got decent legs.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: He really likes to load up.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: He has a fast jab,
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: but he kind of does that thing that's a little amateurish
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: that you see young fighters in the gym do where it's like a fast jab and then
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: the right hand comes a little too quick.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: So typically with a good jab, you get a good jab, hand comes back and right hand.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: And he also has some weird habits.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: It's almost like the Mark Magsayo on the inside where his tendency is to go low
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: and almost go to the ground.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: When guys are on the inside, that's probably not a good habit.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: Let's watch this sequence.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to talk you through it.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: So it's like he's looking for this jab.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: He's looking for the extension.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Boom.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: He threw two of them, didn't fully go.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: I'm at 141, now 139, second round.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: We'll go 135 right here.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: Watch with me.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: So he's looking.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: He's got good eyes on it.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: Throws a wild right uppercut that wasn't going to land, right?
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: He's got, to be fair...
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Braithwaite is coming in.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: He's built like a fire hydrant and he's going to come in.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: So he's looking to counterpunch him.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: He's running the system on him.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: You can't just outbox guys like this unless you have elite level conditioning.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: He's turning him.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: I think the big thing and Braithwaite has no idea how to cut the ring off.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: He's just letting him exit.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: And now what I'm seeing with Maljica is he's really catching rhythm.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: So he's able to turn both ways.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: It's really his jab is what He's got a pretty good jab.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: He keeps his eyes very wide open.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: It just feels like when he throws that right hand, he sometimes gets a little ahead of himself.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: Let's go to the 10th round.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: Sometimes later in the fight, you can see.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: Okay, so now it looks like Braithwaite's a little blown up, a little bloody.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'll punch with you.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: He's a good fighter.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: He's a good fighter.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: It just feels like In these lower weights,
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: guys get moved to title positions without fully having the skills because of
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: the lack of depth.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: So now let's look at my guy, Suboy, Tumyo, Suboy.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: It's an amateur fight.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's check it out.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: Probably watched this, but maybe I didn't.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: He's got that little hop, high guard.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: He's fighting a Kazakhstan fighter.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: Uzbekistan is the new Cuban.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is real amateur and they're just running into each other.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: They're trying to throw a gazillion punches per round
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: and they're just ending up real close together.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's see.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: So the big thing with Suboy is he loops that right hand.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: He doesn't throw it straight.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Kind of throws the punch that I think people look for guys to catch Ryan Garcia with.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: It's like you're throwing a rock.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: He has a hop step.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: He puts a left hook.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: He kind of reminds me of Dimitri Bivol a little bit.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: He doesn't have the same skill set,
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: but the way he throws his right hand and his left hook reminds me of Bivol.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: I don't love this fight, so I want to watch a pro fight.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: I want to watch something else.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: That was just an ugly.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: Let's watch the Quadras fight.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: I feel like I watched the Quadras fight a while back, but let's go revisit this one.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: Film from the crowd.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: Love a good film from the crowd fight.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: So let's see.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: He's got a haircut.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: That means he's getting ready to go to war.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Keeps his hands low.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: That's the first thing I see with Sue Boy.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Keeps his hands low.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: He thinks he's covering his his temple or his chin, but he's exposing his temple.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: It's all reflexes.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: So something the one up top gang could totally catch him.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: Decent speed.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't say it's great speed.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: Say the big thing with him, yeah, he kind of has that bivol thing.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: That's his bread and butter.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: He's going to hop,
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: he's going to fence you,
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: and he's going to go jab, right hand, and if you hang out, he'll step back.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's just really, this is a fencer's game with him.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: So he's going to fence you.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: So it's going to be Quadris, a little bit older fighter, tough.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: He's like a guy who's a little older.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: He's going to come in, try to make it rough.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: And then you have a fencer, and he's like, okay, let me re-engage.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: He's always making you reset, and then he just stops, jab right hand.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Jab right hand.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: So let's check out the later rounds.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: Let's see how he starts to break him down.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, so he puts him on the ropes.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: So once the fight gets later,
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: he goes from a fencer to then he starts doing the choppa dance,
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: the dreaded choppa dance.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: And what that is in Oakland boxing was...
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Guys walking guys down.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: They used to call it the choppa dance where it's like,
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: I'm disrespecting your power and I'm just going to walk you down.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: So he's going high guard, you go, I go.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: And he's just trying to beat up the older fighter.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: So he's going high guard right in front of him.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: He's like, your shots don't hurt me anymore.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: You can't keep me off.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Quadris holding, which isn't promising.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: And it's just a mentally taxing thing to do.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: It's just like saying like,
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: When you start walking a guy down and you originally started as a boxer,
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: you're basically just saying you don't have any ways to win.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: And it's just a way to break a guy's spirit.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: And it looks like that's what he was doing.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: Let's see the finish right here.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: So Quadris is throwing get off me punches, but there's nothing on him.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: And then he's really starting to load up.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: Really strange.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was a decent stoppage.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: He was wobbled, but it was like one of these where It was more so a mercy stoppage.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Decent win.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: Case for prospect of the year last year.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: So I'm excited.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: I don't see Mojica having enough.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: But if his jab is really, really elite, the fight could be interesting because...
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: That jab, the thing I noticed is Sue Boy's big thing is fencing and timing.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: Can you preview Matsumoto versus Acosta Silviero?
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Matsumoto vacated the WBA regular belt.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: To challenge Oscar Colazzo for the full WBA title,
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: we previously covered Matsumoto-Yuni Tanako rematch.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, and for my mail bet,
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: for my schedule, I tried to avoid this because I didn't know as much about him.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: So let's see.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Acosta.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: Acosta's not in, he's in the green trunks.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: Box Azteca.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: I get Box Azteca fights now on YouTube.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: That used to be some of my favorite fights 13 years ago.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: I'd come home on a Saturday night to watch a box Azteca.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: What are we getting here?
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: So Acosta is what you see.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: He's a puncher and he's going to load up and he's going to just hit you.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: He is a fun, fun fighter.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: He's just Reckless action.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: I'd say he's a lower weight, more reckless David Benavidez.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: He's going to stand in front of you.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: He's going to punch.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: He's a fan favorite.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: What you see is what you get.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: Really, really fun fighter.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: Not a style meant to age.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: The style that's the opposite of the wine.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: What is he?
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: He's got a cheese style.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: Cheese goes bad if you expose it.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: So that's his style to me.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: It's just loading up on shots, big shots.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: Let's see Matsumoto, Japanese middleweight, minimum weight.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, Jesus.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: I don't know who's who.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: I guess he's the Tekken.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, I got to do some research here.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: I would assume Matsumoto's the left-hander.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's the left-hander.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: So, let's see.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this could be a real fight,
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: because Matsumoto is obviously more skilled,
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: but it's like, I'm curious to see how he handles pressure.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, in this fight,
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: his dealing with pressure is holding, and that might not be the best strategy for
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Going forward, got good straight left hands.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: Interesting fight.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be watching that one for sure.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's check this out.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: Media workout for Matsuma.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's see what we got.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: He's got a little shadow boxing.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: Got the pool noodles.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: Nice short shots.
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's fast.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, the thing I noticed right away is his distance is a little off.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: He's a good fighter,
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: but it seems like he kind of,
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: he doesn't fully extend his punches when he's practicing.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Let's see that with the mitts.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he doesn't fully extend them.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: And he kind of loops that left hand.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: He's really, really trying to be as fast as possible.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: He also doesn't move his head as much as I'd like.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: See this?
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: He's doing that.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: When he comes in on his jab left hand on the ropes, his head does not move.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: He's coming in on the same angle.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: Boom.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: His head only moves when he sees a punch.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: That's not great.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: He's not anticipating punches.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: So I'm curious if he's been knocked out.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: We're going to do some lukie research because typically guys that do,
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Although he does fight at a lower weight where you can kind of get away
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: with some stuff, but I'm curious if he's been knocked out.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: He has not been knocked out.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: And Yuni Takata did have a style that like should in theory trouble him.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: So this is a really good fight.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: It's a really good fight because my gut feeling is this might be a little too much for him.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: But, like, I don't know.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: Would you make that if you were his handlers?
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: Would you put it on this card?
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: Who knows?
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: So, reckless wild puncher, young,
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: kind of fast-track Japanese rising star who seems to kind
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: of have some defensive flaws with trading it with, like, hand speed.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: Chris Bill Smith's friend and roster mate Lee Cutler versus Lewis Green.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: Let's look at Sam Gilley versus Lewis Green.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: I feel like I've watched this one.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: I love the comments saying it looks like two different guys in two different weight classes.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: Let's get another one.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: Let's go Lewis Green.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: Let's go this Sufa Boxing one, August 8th.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: That was a month ago.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, Lewis Green.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: So Green, I mean,
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: he's got the Chris Billum Smith, but without kind of some of the natural abilities.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: He's a guy that brings a crowbar and he's trying to open your front door by prying it open.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: There's not a lot of trickery.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: He's going to loop some shots.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: He's got the regional British thing saying, come here, mate.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: I'm really tough.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: Look at me.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: Give it a go.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: And then when the really good guys fight him, he probably gets hit really hard.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: And he's like, wait, what happened?
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: So he's in there with this fighter.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: Everybody's just going to break him down.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: He's just going to do the, I'm tougher than you, go down the front door.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: The guy's all cut up and busted up.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: So he won the fight.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: Physically tough.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: He's there.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: He is what you see.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: Got a third round KO.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: So he's kind of building himself up on these Zufa.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: He's probably a guy that benefits from being on Zufa, right?
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: Like I wouldn't have really known who he was.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: And then you have Lee Cutler.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Let's see what Lee Cutler is.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: He's also just like a physically strong guy who's got that domestic British thing
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: where he's just like, no real active jab.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: Let me walk you down, fight you on the inside.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: He already looks like he's wearing a souvenir and it's the second round.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: Looks like the fight's a 10 rounder in the second round.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's pretty good fight on paper.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: This one slipped my mind.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: It's a middleweight bout.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: It's just two guys that run into each other, you know?
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: Let's see Cutler's knockout.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, he hit his shoulder, guy goes down.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, personally, I'm probably more a fan of, so far, Louis Green, what Green does.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: Let's see the Sam Eggington fight.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Sam Eggington versus Lee Cutler.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: This is my type of fight, right?
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: There can only be one Sam Eggington.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: The journeyman of journeymans.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: So...
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's see what... Yeah, I mean, this is your typical Sam Egginton fight.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: They're just fighting on the inside.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: It's a great fight, back and forth.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: So, I mean,
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: if you're asking me who would I favor in that fight,
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: Luis Green,
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: if you're asking me what type of fight I would expect is two guys running
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: into each other and they're going to talk about the heart and balls and courage
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: and conviction...
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: And it's probably going to be like that's the level both guys are at, to be honest.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: Can you preview Hot Rod versus Craig Richardson?
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: I would absolutely love to.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about Craig Richardson versus Dan Aziz.
- 40:45SPEAKER_00: I remember actually watching this fight.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: It was in Africa.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: It felt like there were a bunch of Africa shows last year.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: And now there aren't.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: I think that might be a metaphor for where boxing is.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: It just feels like there was more fascinating stuff.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: Craig Richards typically is a guy that has a good use of his reach.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: He's a physically big guy.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: He's able to kind of be elusive.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: His losses,
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: as I said in the newsletter earlier this week,
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: are to really, really good guys, right?
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: And Dana Zees, I think, was a beloved British fighter.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: Who now is past his prime,
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: but he always kind of overachieved,
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: earned his spot,
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: and then kind of got some fights on the way out because of what he meant as
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: a fighter to people.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: In this fight, Dan just simply doesn't look like the same fighter he once was.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: And Craig kind of looks like he's in his bag.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: He's able, like typically I think of him as a distance fighter who looks to throw a right hand.
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: In this one, he's almost fighting in the mid-range and catching Dan to the body.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: I believe this was a knockout loss, too.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: So let's see.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: Was it?
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: I guess it's not.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, to me, this fight was just Dan looked a little slower.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: See, he The thing I'm not loving is late in this fight,
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: Craig is pushing his punches and he's really extending himself.
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: So when he stabs with his jab, he's got a good jab, but sometimes he reaches with it.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: And that's been kind of like his death sentence against another tier.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: He can get wild, he can slap.
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: I think that technique sometimes is optional for Craig Richards,
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: but his courage and conviction keeps him in fights.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: Let's watch him against Willie Hutchinson.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: Remember this being a pretty good fight.
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: Um...
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, so here's Craig Richards.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: Hutchinson is just kind of like a really,
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: really standard... Oh, Hutchinson switched to a southpaw.
- 42:48SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 42:48SPEAKER_00: Hutchinson's a very physically strong guy, whereas Craig Richards...
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: It's interesting here is Hutchinson switched to southpaw in the second round.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: He's kind of running the system on him.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: He's using an active.
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: He's just doing feints on Craig, and Craig can't guess right on the feints.
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: So Willie's just doing...
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: By doing feints, he's able to be first.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: So that's something to know is Craig can't really get off first when guys feint him.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: And now I'm watching and that's basically what Willie Hutchinson did was just
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: a change in the second round.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: He was like, okay, let me feint you.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: And Craig's now just trying to kind of go forward and following him.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: And he's just winning the fight by being able to be active and being first.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: Even throwing some wild sloppy shots at times.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: So Craig Richards, solid fighter, but I think that it's the technique that limits him.
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: He's able to win fights,
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: he's able to compete,
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: but it's like at times I'd say his technique is not where it should be,
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: and that kind of is the difference against him in elite level fighters.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: Let's go to Hot Rod.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: I remember I was in, I remember being shocked by the outcome of this.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: Hot Rod versus Gavazdick.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: So, let's see.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: So, Hot Rod versus Gavazdick.
- 44:14SPEAKER_00: So, Hot Rod hit the canvas in this fight.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: He's prone to getting hit.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: Really an interesting career.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: Should have beat Marcus Brown.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: Gets steamrolled by Artur Bedarbiev.
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: Rebuilds himself.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: Goes rounds competitive with... With...
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: What's his name?
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: David Murrell.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: Then resurfaces by stopping Gvozdik.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: Gvozdik just absolutely putting it on him.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: Steamrolling him.
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: I think the big thing about Hot Rod is he's able to ride out bad moments and he's very good.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: The closer this fight comes,
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: the more I think Hot Rod's just going to win this because his strength is...
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: He has a really good jab in a right hand.
- 45:00SPEAKER_00: And his right hand's better than you'd think.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: And he can keep his punches fairly straight.
- 45:05SPEAKER_00: And he's got fast hands.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: And Craig Richards tends to slap.
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: And his power carries.
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: And in this fight,
- 45:13SPEAKER_00: it's like later into the fight,
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: he catches Gvozdik in the seventh round with a right hand and drops Gvozdik.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: And then ends up stopping him for a highlight reel knockout.
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: I think he's just maybe a different class of fighter because Craig Richards kind
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: of has gotten away with some flawed technique,
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: whereas Hot Rod kind of gets the most out of what he is.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, you could argue that maybe he has a little bit less than...
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, this was an impressive performance for Murrell.
- 45:46SPEAKER_00: Murrell came out really fast, wanted to make a statement, and then...
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: We get into like round seven and this is Hot Rod in his bag
- 45:57SPEAKER_00: where Hot Rod's just moving, touching, pivot, angle.
- 46:02SPEAKER_00: And he can do that all day.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: And when I was watching that footage, what Hot Rod's doing is a lot of Willie Hutchinson did.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: So I think the big thing for Richards is likable figure, British A-side.
- 46:14SPEAKER_00: He's got to get going quick because Hot Rod lives and dies for a slow,
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: methodical paced fight that he can control.
- 46:25SPEAKER_00: Can you please assess Luke McCormick?
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: Love to.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's check out Luke McCormick.
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: First fight against Garner.
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: I always felt that he was the worst of the two brothers.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: I feel like that's everybody I think coming out of the Olympics.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: Everyone was so high on Pat McCormick.
- 46:44SPEAKER_00: Who knows if he'll reach his full potential.
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: Feels like very muscle bound in this pro debut.
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: It feels like he's really trying to sit on each punch.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: He's not just letting punches fly.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: You can see the inexperience.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: He's really trying to load up on shots, in my opinion, in this fight.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: Little technical things I look at is that he stands too tall,
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: but that tends to be a European thing.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: A lot of European fighters stand tall and have more of an amateur.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: Volume based.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: I think both McCormick brothers kind of suffer from this where they stand tall,
- 47:17SPEAKER_00: but they're looking to load up on power shots.
- 47:20SPEAKER_00: I like his active jab, probing jab.
- 47:23SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 47:23SPEAKER_00: So Gardner is circling the ring.
- 47:27SPEAKER_00: Let's see if he has an answer for how to cut off that right side of the ring
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: because he's just letting him exit all the way around the ring.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to give him another minute and we're going to see if he can figure that out.
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: So let's see, Gardner, I'm at 152 rounds.
- 47:43SPEAKER_00: Gardner's just exiting right on him.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: He's just able to go and turn him in one direction.
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: And I'm sure McCormick has a sense of a feeling,
- 47:53SPEAKER_00: but really Gardner's controlling where the feet go in this fight.
- 47:57SPEAKER_00: So that's a concern I have is that McCormick needs to work on where his feet are
- 48:02SPEAKER_00: to control the range and distance in these fights
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: because he actually isn't controlling the fight.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: He's winning based on hand speed and ability to catch him,
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: but Gardner is actually dictating the terms and the range of the fight in
- 48:14SPEAKER_00: the second round.
- 48:15SPEAKER_00: Let's go further.
- 48:17SPEAKER_00: See, this would be very troubling.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: What round is this?
- 48:21SPEAKER_00: Seventh round.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, now Gardner's starting to walk him down.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: It's tough.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: Like with Luke McCormick,
- 48:31SPEAKER_00: what I'm seeing is a lot of physical toughness,
- 48:34SPEAKER_00: but there's just not the boxing IQ to pick up on the situations he's being presented
- 48:38SPEAKER_00: with.
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: Let's see if it changes.
- 48:43SPEAKER_00: And that's it.
- 48:45SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: One more thing we've got here.
- 48:49SPEAKER_00: Nope, we got some more stuff.
- 48:50SPEAKER_00: We've talked about boxers at the high end, avoiding matchups and waiting for big paydays.
- 48:55SPEAKER_00: What we haven't discussed, what happened to borderline contender boxers?
- 48:59SPEAKER_00: We assumed they were the same, such as Kurt Scooby.
- 49:03SPEAKER_00: Um, versus Adam Azim.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: Alan Chavez didn't bring any Southpaws in to spar for Erdson Garcia.
- 49:08SPEAKER_00: He sparred one Southpaw's entire camp.
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: That's crazy if that's true.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: Nestor Brazo didn't post on his Instagram from the January Barclays Center event
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: to Pitbull match announcement.
- 49:18SPEAKER_00: Did Bravo fight an opponent who spent money to spar against like other fighters?
- 49:24SPEAKER_00: The question here is asking, um,
- 49:29SPEAKER_00: Are we going to see an era where fighters maybe don't spend as much money on camp
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: because they want to pocket their purse?
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: And I think that goes back to my fear of where boxing is going is you're going
- 49:41SPEAKER_00: to hear a popular belief that fighters need to get paid what they're worth based on
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: the market.
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: And that's coming regardless, right?
- 49:50SPEAKER_00: Because it's like people are going to get overpaid,
- 49:52SPEAKER_00: but then there's going to be a next era where Those same deals aren't going to be
- 49:56SPEAKER_00: the same.
- 49:57SPEAKER_00: And maybe a competitor will introduce something,
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: but these really lucrative contracts are just kind of one-offs for right now and
- 50:05SPEAKER_00: the here and now.
- 50:07SPEAKER_00: And they're not going to be viable for the next ones.
- 50:11SPEAKER_00: The next type of contracts aren't going to be the same.
- 50:13SPEAKER_00: Maybe some stellar fighters will get lucrative deals.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: That's coming.
- 50:19SPEAKER_00: I think the issue is we don't have a healthy sport in the sense
- 50:26SPEAKER_00: of prospects staying active,
- 50:31SPEAKER_00: consistent mid-card contenders being able to work themselves up the card,
- 50:36SPEAKER_00: prospects being able to move to a main card,
- 50:39SPEAKER_00: and quality main event fighters being able to take a stay-busy fight if they wanted
- 50:43SPEAKER_00: to.
- 50:44SPEAKER_00: That is all but gone right now.
- 50:46SPEAKER_00: So let's see what we got here.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: It's a YouTube link.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: We got Marco Verde Amateur Tournament.
- 50:55SPEAKER_00: So let me see if this is all Marco Verde because I've watched a lot of Marco Verde.
- 51:01SPEAKER_00: Is this Marco Verde?
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: No, this is another.
- 51:09SPEAKER_00: This is the guy that fought Verde.
- 51:13SPEAKER_00: Murtijayev.
- 51:17SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 51:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm going to assume,
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: and that's terrible of me,
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: that he's a Uzbek fighter because he's not sitting down on anything.
- 51:29SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 51:30SPEAKER_00: We're going to skip that one this week.
- 51:32SPEAKER_00: I just don't have the energy for that type of guy where it's just like
- 51:38SPEAKER_00: the Uzbek super is like watching Cuban boxing.
