- 0:43Speaker 1: attempter and reader of books. Welcome, welcome back if you're
- 0:48Speaker 1: used to being here, and welcome if you're new. Hi,
- 0:52Speaker 1: how's everyone this week? When I am asking that you
- 0:54Speaker 1: can't tell me? Oh, I hope you all had a
- 0:56Speaker 1: good week. I had a day off of work finally,
- 0:59Speaker 1: finally the day of It's been eight days, I think
- 1:03Speaker 1: because I was doing stuff with the move because it's
- 1:06Speaker 1: been a year without most of people havn't been able
- 1:09Speaker 1: to get to the shops. I actually had some people
- 1:11Speaker 1: around today who I just gave away a bunch of
- 1:15Speaker 1: the kids so clothes. Some of the stuff still had
- 1:17Speaker 1: tags on it. You know. We'd bought some nice stuff
- 1:19Speaker 1: for them tour out and about, but like there was
- 1:21Speaker 1: no to goal, so we just and everyone. I was like,
- 1:24Speaker 1: let me give you something for it, and I was like, no,
- 1:26Speaker 1: just take it, Like I'm not going to use their
- 1:28Speaker 1: clothes anymore. So I got to do that and I
- 1:30Speaker 1: got to just give it. And then I had some toys,
- 1:32Speaker 1: like I had a tricycle and a little scooter and
- 1:37Speaker 1: a little Tikes car that looks like a dinosaur. A
- 1:39Speaker 1: toddler playgroup which is actually going to be starting back
- 1:42Speaker 1: up again when everything sort of calms down, so they're
- 1:45Speaker 1: gonna have some toys when they go back, and I'm
- 1:47Speaker 1: just I'm just happy if someone else gets joy out
- 1:50Speaker 1: of the things that gave my kids joy. You know,
- 1:52Speaker 1: it's just nice to give. And it's also really handy
- 1:56Speaker 1: because now the room is empty and I can start
- 1:57Speaker 1: clearing and we're paints, watches and stuff, and the bunk
- 2:03Speaker 1: pets survive for the kids. I'm meeting up with one
- 2:06Speaker 1: of my friends for a socially distanced walk later on
- 2:09Speaker 1: in the week, and I'm just a very very excited. Ah.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So yeah, it's just been really really productive. I've had
- 2:16Speaker 1: a really productive day off. I was rested. I managed
- 2:19Speaker 1: to move furniture and clear out a room and have
- 2:22Speaker 1: everything packed up so we can start decorating. And my
- 2:27Speaker 1: throat is slowly yeiling. I'm sure you can still here.
- 2:29Speaker 1: There's a bit of a rasp still there, but for
- 2:32Speaker 1: the most part, it's not excruciating anymore. So I'm pretty excited.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Things are. Things are looking up for me. News news news,
- 2:40Speaker 1: news news. If you want to hear me in all
- 2:42Speaker 1: my adhd glory. By the way, I am a guest
- 2:45Speaker 1: on the Fantastic fish Nets and Philosophy podcast, so they're
- 2:50Speaker 1: on Spotify. You can actually go listen to them on
- 2:52Speaker 1: Spotify fish Nets and Philosophy and you get to hear
- 2:56Speaker 1: me talk about why history needs to be viewed from
- 2:59Speaker 1: a lens that is not just old white.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Men, especially those of a certain generation where a lot
- 3:06Speaker 2: of our perceptions regarding history are from which I think
- 3:08Speaker 2: sort of falls into the guild I made merch, Jesus,
- 3:13Speaker 2: I made marriage actually as well, so the Guild of
- 3:17Speaker 2: Historical Descent.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yes, so I've got the Guild of Historical Descent. I've
- 3:20Speaker 1: got some logo stuff up there, and I'm actually working
- 3:24Speaker 1: on one for this, but it's nothing's turning out quite
- 3:27Speaker 1: how I like it. So yeah, I'll put the link
- 3:30Speaker 1: for the merch in below and also the link for
- 3:33Speaker 1: beacons where it's got all the list of all the
- 3:36Speaker 1: apps and social media's and all of that jazz. And
- 3:40Speaker 1: I know what you're thinking, quite your jibber jabber in
- 3:42Speaker 1: fact me and fact you. I shall We are going
- 3:47Speaker 1: to talk about Olgat of Kiev, Saint Olga, as some
- 3:51Speaker 1: of you may know, and I love this women. But
- 3:53Speaker 1: before we get into this, we're gonna get our source
- 3:56Speaker 1: on Olga of Kiev. Princess Warrior by Celesteekly. Saints Behaving Badly,
- 4:03Speaker 1: the cutthroats, crooks, trollops, con men, and devil worshippers who
- 4:07Speaker 1: became Saints by Thomas J. Crockwell. Princess is Behaving badly.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Real stories from history without the fairy tale endings by
- 4:15Speaker 1: Linda Rodriguez McRobbie and of course biography dot com and
- 4:21Speaker 1: History dot com. So let's talk about oga. I fucking
- 4:25Speaker 1: love oga. So, as we know with women in the past,
- 4:28Speaker 1: birthdates kind of like throwing a dart at a map,
- 4:31Speaker 1: you never really know where it's gonna end up if
- 4:33Speaker 1: you have terrible dart skills like me. So, because we
- 4:36Speaker 1: don't really know too much about Olga of Kiev. We
- 4:38Speaker 1: have her birthdate. You're gonna love this one. Oga of
- 4:41Speaker 1: Kiev was born somewhere between the year eight ninety and
- 4:45Speaker 1: nine hundred and twenty five. But women of the past,
- 4:50Speaker 1: who knows. So we don't really know much about her
- 4:52Speaker 1: life pre marriage, except we think she might have been Hungarian.
- 4:57Speaker 1: So like Viking is generally the tear so like what
- 5:01Speaker 1: Greeks and Russians would call the Vikings, and so she
- 5:04Speaker 1: may have been Viking, but you don't know. It's very
- 5:07Speaker 1: much a maybe. So we generally think that Olga was
- 5:11Speaker 1: born in nine oh three ish and around in Pskov, Russia.
- 5:18Speaker 1: If I've pronounced that incorrectly, Yeah, probably Pscov. That sounds
- 5:23Speaker 1: sounds vaguely right. We don't really know that much about
- 5:27Speaker 1: her even when she marries, because she marries, like when
- 5:30Speaker 1: she's about fifteen or so, to Igor or Igor, Prince
- 5:35Speaker 1: of Kiev, and they have a son. So a Got
- 5:39Speaker 1: is married to Prince Egor of Kiev. So let's talk
- 5:41Speaker 1: about the Kievan russ So the Kievan rus was like
- 5:46Speaker 1: this empire that had built up, eh not everybody was
- 5:49Speaker 1: super thrilled about that, Like the Drevlians, which were this
- 5:52Speaker 1: tribe who generally paid tribute to like a bunch of
- 5:57Speaker 1: people who had come before egor so like a bunch
- 5:59Speaker 1: of princes and his predecessors and stuff they would pay.
- 6:03Speaker 1: There was this which was effectively part of this extortion racket.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So they would pay this fucking protection fee to all
- 6:10Speaker 1: of these previous princes of Kiev. But when the prince
- 6:14Speaker 1: before die in nine hundred and twelve, they decide, fuck it, no,
- 6:20Speaker 1: we're gonna pay this. We're gonna pay this, this fucking fee,
- 6:23Speaker 1: this tribute to this local warlord. Instead by egos like mate, no,
- 6:30Speaker 1: I want my privilege is back. Fuck this, I'm gonna
- 6:33Speaker 1: get these guys onside. So he takes a trip to
- 6:36Speaker 1: their capital of Eskoriston, which now would be in like
- 6:40Speaker 1: northern Ukraine, and he shows up and he's like, look,
- 6:44Speaker 1: tis I your leader? Give him my fucking money, and
- 6:47Speaker 1: they're like no, this visit him is showing up was
- 6:53Speaker 1: like a slap in the face to the Trevlians, and
- 6:56Speaker 1: they're fucking pissed about it. So what do they do.
- 7:00Speaker 1: They decide to kill him. What they do is they
- 7:03Speaker 1: bend down these two birch trees and they tie Prince
- 7:06Speaker 1: Igor's feet and his legs to the trees, and then
- 7:11Speaker 1: they let the trees straight They just let go like boing,
- 7:14Speaker 1: and they let the trees straighten up again, which hah,
- 7:18Speaker 1: pretty much. It tears him apart, It literally rips him
- 7:23Speaker 1: Jesus anyway, So he's dead in a horrific fashion, and
- 7:28Speaker 1: Olga is Augas still at home with their three year
- 7:31Speaker 1: old son, Sviatoslav. And Sviatoslav he's like three years old
- 7:37Speaker 1: and you know, generally too young to actually rule, so
- 7:42Speaker 1: Olga has to step up and rule in his place.
- 7:44Speaker 1: So the Drevelans are like, oh, I have an idea.
- 7:49Speaker 1: This is a lady on the throne, and as a lady,
- 7:52Speaker 1: she must be in want of a husband, and so
- 7:55Speaker 1: we shall bend this demure noble woman to her will,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and they will range for her to marry the Dreveleyan
- 8:02Speaker 1: prince Mal, which means not only would they no longer
- 8:06Speaker 1: have to pay any sort of protection fee or fucking
- 8:09Speaker 1: tribute to the Kievan Russ, they would rule the Kievan Russ.
- 8:15Speaker 1: So while Olga is just ruling and such, the Drevelian
- 8:19Speaker 1: send twenty of their best men to try and persuade
- 8:23Speaker 1: her to hit up at this Mary, the loving embodiment
- 8:28Speaker 1: of her husband's murder. So these diplomats show up and
- 8:32Speaker 1: they're like, hmmm, please marry the man who murdered your husband.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And she's like, hmm, fuck this for a game of soldiers.
- 8:40Speaker 1: And what does she do? She tells the diplomats, why, yes,
- 8:44Speaker 1: I do think this is a wonderful proposal, as my
- 8:47Speaker 1: husband is dead and cannot be you know, brought back.
- 8:51Speaker 1: But you know what, but you know, I think we're
- 8:53Speaker 1: gonna wait till tomorrow so I can honor you. So
- 8:56Speaker 1: if you please could go back to your boat, and
- 8:59Speaker 1: I want you to tell people that it was like
- 9:01Speaker 1: your idea and that you only want to be in
- 9:03Speaker 1: your boat so that you are seen to have the
- 9:05Speaker 1: authority because obviously you're men, and I'm just like, what
- 9:09Speaker 1: a princess. And while they're in their boat, she gets
- 9:12Speaker 1: her men to dig a ditch. So the next day,
- 9:16Speaker 1: good as her word, they stay in their boat and
- 9:19Speaker 1: they are carried. The people of Kiev carry the Trevilians
- 9:23Speaker 1: in their boat and they were carried into the court
- 9:27Speaker 1: where whips they were dropped into a fucking trench that
- 9:31Speaker 1: Oga had demanded to be dug the day before, and
- 9:34Speaker 1: while they are being buried alive in this fucking pit.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Olga bends down and says to the diplomats, and I'm
- 9:43Speaker 1: paraphrasing a weep it, she said, how do you like
- 9:47Speaker 1: them apples? Bitch? Instead of just leaving it as it is,
- 9:51Speaker 1: like burying alive a bunch of diplomats, Olga has other ideas.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Oga decides to send word back to Prince Mam and
- 10:00Speaker 1: that she would absolutely, definitely, one hundred percent love to
- 10:04Speaker 1: marry him. However, she would require, you know, in order
- 10:08Speaker 1: to be respectful and to show just like how important
- 10:12Speaker 1: this match was, because you know, she's a fucking princess,
- 10:17Speaker 1: the ruler of the Kievan russ and if they want
- 10:20Speaker 1: this marriage to happen, then frankly they need to send
- 10:24Speaker 1: over their gentry to collect her and accompany her back
- 10:30Speaker 1: to the Drevelian territory. And so Prince mal her wannabe sitter,
- 10:35Speaker 1: happily obliges to this because like he isn't aware the
- 10:38Speaker 1: dignitaries and diplomats have been buried alive, but he's like, yay,
- 10:43Speaker 1: more people to transport my princess. WHOA why'd they come
- 10:47Speaker 1: this way? So he sends a party of like the gentry,
- 10:52Speaker 1: so a bunch of his chieftains, he sends them over,
- 10:54Speaker 1: and so she gives them a grand welcome, because of
- 10:58Speaker 1: course she does. She's she's well coming the gentry into
- 11:01Speaker 1: her court, and so, being the kind considerate host she is,
- 11:06Speaker 1: she invites the visitors to clean up in her bath house.
- 11:10Speaker 1: So they go in, and they go to have a wash,
- 11:12Speaker 1: and she locks the doors, sets fire to it and
- 11:16Speaker 1: burns everyone alive. And you're thinking, jeez, oga, that's that's
- 11:19Speaker 1: two accounts of mass murder. But you know what, she
- 11:22Speaker 1: wasn't finished, because hell hath no fury. Like a woman scorned.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Even though most of the Drevelian ruling class has been exterminated,
- 11:32Speaker 1: Olga decides she's going to get rid of the rest
- 11:34Speaker 1: of them. She announces that she'll be arriving back the
- 11:38Speaker 1: Drevellian capitals. She's heading back to Escoriston, and she asks
- 11:41Speaker 1: them to arrange a funeral feast so they could all
- 11:45Speaker 1: mourn over her husband's death in that city. And even
- 11:49Speaker 1: though no one had heard from either of the groups
- 11:52Speaker 1: they'd already sent to Augus's court, the Drevelians are like, yes,
- 11:55Speaker 1: she's coming, we better said about this fast, and they
- 11:59Speaker 1: have a feast, and what do they do? They have
- 12:02Speaker 1: the fucking feast. So they have this big feast and
- 12:05Speaker 1: there's lots of food and mead and merriment, and everybody
- 12:09Speaker 1: gets fucking slashed. Well, all of the Revlians get slashed.
- 12:13Speaker 1: They're all out for the count. They're drunk. And while
- 12:17Speaker 1: they are all rat arsed, Ouga soldiers sillyh five thousand
- 12:22Speaker 1: of them, and you're thinking, okay, she's done now, She's
- 12:25Speaker 1: not done yet. No, So the surviving Revelians they're like
- 12:29Speaker 1: begging for mercy, and they're like, we'll pay you in
- 12:31Speaker 1: honey and far and other goods which are neither sticky
- 12:36Speaker 1: nor furry. And she's like, okay, give me three doves
- 12:40Speaker 1: and three sparrows from each house. And because I don't
- 12:44Speaker 1: need all the money, I don't need a huge tribute.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I don't need that. I'm not going to extort you.
- 12:50Speaker 1: All I want is this teeny tiny gift. You're clearly
- 12:53Speaker 1: impoverished after all of these sieges. What Olga does is
- 12:57Speaker 1: Olga gives each of her soldiers and her army a
- 13:01Speaker 1: bird and they have to attach like bas of like silver,
- 13:04Speaker 1: which is like tied to the legs with bits of cloth,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and so it's nighttime. She gets the soldiers to release
- 13:11Speaker 1: the birds and they all fly back to coops their haemos.
- 13:15Speaker 1: The eaves, the porches, and every house, every fucking house
- 13:21Speaker 1: in this entire village is engulfed in flames, and there
- 13:26Speaker 1: is no chance in hell anybody is escaping. People are
- 13:29Speaker 1: trying to flee, and anybody who tries to flee or
- 13:32Speaker 1: the soldiers are catching them. So she takes the city
- 13:35Speaker 1: so like she has decimated the city. At this point
- 13:38Speaker 1: it has burned to the ground, it is cinders. At
- 13:40Speaker 1: this point she captures like the elders of the city,
- 13:43Speaker 1: and she kills some of the captives, and she gives
- 13:47Speaker 1: some slaves to her followers, and then whoever's left she
- 13:52Speaker 1: leaves so they can pay tribute. After this, people are
- 13:56Speaker 1: generally like, hmmm, let's not mess with Olga. After this
- 14:00Speaker 1: whole thing, Auga stays the regent ruler of the Kiev
- 14:04Speaker 1: and russ and she is like supported by her army
- 14:08Speaker 1: and her people. She does change the sort of the
- 14:11Speaker 1: system of tribute gathering, so the first recorded legal reform
- 14:17Speaker 1: in Eastern Europe, and she manages to like avoid marriage
- 14:20Speaker 1: proposal for the most part, and she manages to defend
- 14:25Speaker 1: the city during the Siege of Kiev in nine sixty eight,
- 14:28Speaker 1: managing to save the throne for her son. And as
- 14:32Speaker 1: she's ruling, she establishes trading posts, trade centers, towns, boundary posts,
- 14:39Speaker 1: hunting grounds. She manages to centralize state rule with these
- 14:43Speaker 1: trade centers, which are called pago state and these would
- 14:46Speaker 1: be like really really important in the ethnic and cultural
- 14:50Speaker 1: unification of you know, the Rose people, and all of
- 14:54Speaker 1: these border posts they sort of establish these national boundaries
- 14:59Speaker 1: of the kingdom. When her son takes over and he
- 15:03Speaker 1: starts going on like military campaigns and things like that
- 15:06Speaker 1: while he's away, he basically puts her back in his
- 15:09Speaker 1: regent when he's away, and she takes charge and stays
- 15:12Speaker 1: there with her grandsons while he's out doing his thing.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Remember when I said she was a saint. You're probably
- 15:17Speaker 1: thinking at this point, how is this incredibly vengeful and
- 15:21Speaker 1: vicious person a saint. Well, in the nine fifties, Oga
- 15:26Speaker 1: travels to Constantinople, which at the time was the capital
- 15:29Speaker 1: of the Byzantine Empire, and once she's there, the assistance
- 15:33Speaker 1: of the Emperor Constantine the seventh, she converts to Christianity,
- 15:37Speaker 1: but it seems to be like it's really funny. It's
- 15:39Speaker 1: kind of like a cat mouse thing a wee bit.
- 15:41Speaker 1: So what I think is is it Constantine was like, hey,
- 15:45Speaker 1: you and I could roll together because like he says
- 15:47Speaker 1: that she's pretty cute, she's pretty hot for whatever the
- 15:50Speaker 1: standards were in the time, and she's like really smart.
- 15:54Speaker 1: So she's like, what are we chat? Constantine's like, you're
- 15:57Speaker 1: worthy to reign with me in this city. And when
- 16:00Speaker 1: he says that, all was like that's nice. I'm pagan.
- 16:03Speaker 1: So yeah, and so the topic of baptism comes up
- 16:07Speaker 1: and she's like, listen, if you want to baptize me,
- 16:08Speaker 1: you're gonna have to do it yourself. Like fine, So
- 16:12Speaker 1: the emperor, with the assistant of the patriarch, baptizes her
- 16:15Speaker 1: and she gets christened with the name Helena, and it's
- 16:18Speaker 1: frome to one of two places. It's either from Saint
- 16:20Speaker 1: Helena or she literally named herself after Emperor Constantine's current wife, Helena.
- 16:27Speaker 1: So Constantine is like, hey, so you want to get
- 16:31Speaker 1: married now that you're all baptized, and she's like, oh no,
- 16:35Speaker 1: oh dear church. Law states that a god daughter can't
- 16:40Speaker 1: actually marry her godfather. So whoops. Some people may have
- 16:45Speaker 1: been pissed at that and thought they were chucked in
- 16:47Speaker 1: the friend zone, but he was like, ha ha, you
- 16:50Speaker 1: have outwitted me. And then it gives her a bunch
- 16:52Speaker 1: of shit like gold, silver silks, vases and a bunch
- 16:58Speaker 1: of other stuff. So she returned back to Kiev and
- 17:01Speaker 1: she's like, hey, son, my darling, Seattle's laugh do you
- 17:06Speaker 1: want to get baptized? And he was like no, He's like,
- 17:10Speaker 1: my followers would laugh at me if i'd like turned Christian,
- 17:13Speaker 1: but okay, And she's like trying to convince him that
- 17:15Speaker 1: his followers would you know, convert to if he converted,
- 17:19Speaker 1: but he's like, nah, I'm good, but he did, but
- 17:22Speaker 1: he did elect to like not persecute anybody who decided
- 17:26Speaker 1: to convert to Christianity, which you know is probably the
- 17:29Speaker 1: best you could hope for at the time. So August
- 17:31Speaker 1: starts building churches in like Piscoff and Kiev and a
- 17:36Speaker 1: bunch of other places, and Olga tries to like invite
- 17:38Speaker 1: bishops from the Byzantian Empire over she asks the Holy
- 17:42Speaker 1: Roman Emperor Auto to like send some bishops and some
- 17:45Speaker 1: priests and the bishops had sort of gone, but the
- 17:49Speaker 1: Pagans were like, we don't want the bishops here, and
- 17:52Speaker 1: so the bishops were just like spelled really. So Agad
- 17:57Speaker 1: dies in nine hundred and sixty nine, which is not
- 18:00Speaker 1: long after the Siege of Kiev. As she's still dying
- 18:04Speaker 1: in her last days, she used to convince her son
- 18:06Speaker 1: to actually stay in Kiev with her, and he's like,
- 18:10Speaker 1: I'm thinking of moving like my throne and all that
- 18:13Speaker 1: stuff to Danube. And she's like, can you stay here
- 18:17Speaker 1: for a bit, because I don't think I'm here for long.
- 18:19Speaker 1: And she's like, listen, I'm gonna die soon. Can you
- 18:23Speaker 1: please ensure that I have a proper burial, a Christian burial,
- 18:26Speaker 1: that's all. And then you can go and do whatever
- 18:28Speaker 1: you want, son, you know, whatever you like. And so
- 18:31Speaker 1: she dies three days later, the whole of the Kiev
- 18:35Speaker 1: and russ goes into mourning. The Princess of Kiev has
- 18:39Speaker 1: last writes performed by a priest, and even though Fiatislov
- 18:45Speaker 1: really didn't like Christianity, he was still respectful enough of
- 18:49Speaker 1: his mum that he gets her priest Gregory, to hold
- 18:53Speaker 1: a Christian funeral and not do any of the like
- 18:56Speaker 1: the ritual pagan feast and all that stuff. And she's
- 18:58Speaker 1: buried in a tomb inv and she's there for like
- 19:02Speaker 1: two hundred years, and then it gets destroyed by the
- 19:06Speaker 1: Mongolian Tatar armies of the Batucan in about twelve forty
- 19:10Speaker 1: so well Olga was alive, she tried to make the
- 19:13Speaker 1: Kievan Rus like a Christian territory, but it didn't really
- 19:18Speaker 1: work at the time. But it was actually her grandson
- 19:21Speaker 1: Vladimir who ended up officially turning to Christianity in about
- 19:25Speaker 1: nine eighty eight, making it like making it like the
- 19:28Speaker 1: official religion of the Kievan Rus like nearly six centuries
- 19:33Speaker 1: after her death in fifteen forty seven, the Russian Orthodox
- 19:37Speaker 1: Church names Olga ascent. She ends up being. She get
- 19:42Speaker 1: this honorific called the ace Apostolous, which means equal to
- 19:46Speaker 1: the apostles the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church,
- 19:51Speaker 1: and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and she's also centered
- 19:57Speaker 1: in the Roman Catholic Church. Augus's face day is July eleventh,
- 20:02Speaker 1: which is supposedly the date of her death, and so
- 20:05Speaker 1: Saint Oga becomes the patron saint of widows and converts.
- 20:10Speaker 1: She inspires like a bunch of stuff. There's like twenty
- 20:14Speaker 1: five churches and monuments that are made in her honor. Yeah,
- 20:17Speaker 1: there's like twenty five monuments in churches and stuff dedicated
- 20:22Speaker 1: to her. And that's in Australia, Canada, Russia, obviously, the
- 20:27Speaker 1: Ukraine and the US. There's like monuments, airports, chapels, churches, cathedrals, bridges,
- 20:36Speaker 1: like a bunch of stuff. There's this is really funny.
- 20:40Speaker 1: A ballet based on Olga's life was composed to commemorate
- 20:46Speaker 1: the fifteen hundredth anniversary of the City of Kiev. In
- 20:50Speaker 1: nineteen eighty one, there was a concept album by the
- 20:54Speaker 1: French band Jirod about Olga of Kiev called a Perfect Absolution.
- 21:01Speaker 1: And in nineteen ninety seven the Ukraine created the Order
- 21:07Speaker 1: of Princess Olga and it basically has a sort of
- 21:11Speaker 1: symbol of Olga of Kiev on this little medal with
- 21:13Speaker 1: a wee ribbon, and it's a Ukrainian civil decoration and
- 21:19Speaker 1: it is bestowed to women for and I quote personal
- 21:22Speaker 1: merits in state production, scientific, educational, cultural charity and other
- 21:29Speaker 1: spheres of social activities for upbringing children and families. And
- 21:34Speaker 1: it is and it has a first second in third
- 21:39Speaker 1: class grades and Ukrainian citizens and foreigners are eligible for
- 21:45Speaker 1: the order. And that is the story of Princess Olga
- 21:49Speaker 1: of Kiev. Wow. I just some saints have the best stories,
- 21:57Speaker 1: like they just do. And what did we learned today?
- 22:01Speaker 1: Some saints are badasses. Don't murder somebody's husband and then
- 22:06Speaker 1: try and marry them. Oh, and you know what, I
- 22:10Speaker 1: like to think that Olga kV is the patron saint
- 22:13Speaker 1: of widows, converts and burning the fucking patriarchy. Oh my goodness.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Oh I like that one. And see, these are stories
- 22:23Speaker 1: I don't think get told very often because a lot
- 22:26Speaker 1: of our history revolves around straight white men for the majority,
- 22:30Speaker 1: you know what I mean, and sort of colonialism. Really,
- 22:34Speaker 1: oh my goodness, I actually forgot to say. I want
- 22:36Speaker 1: to thank everyone for their Apple podcast reviews. They're still
- 22:40Speaker 1: coming in and it's amazing, it really is. And you
- 22:43Speaker 1: have no idea how much it helps on the back end,
- 22:46Speaker 1: and it helps push you up the charts, like I'm
- 22:49Speaker 1: charting in Brazil, Denmark and where else. Now, there was
- 22:53Speaker 1: somewhere else that was very strange somewhere else. But anyway,
- 22:57Speaker 1: if you liked today's story or my read telling of
- 23:00Speaker 1: the story, please please go onto Apple Podcasts and rate
- 23:04Speaker 1: review five stars and you know, say something. It doesn't
- 23:07Speaker 1: have to be anything about the podcast. You could literally
- 23:10Speaker 1: say anything. You could just quote yas Olga And if
- 23:15Speaker 1: you want to support, and that is the one of

- 23:50Speaker 1: tier you actually get a book from my personal collection
- 23:53Speaker 1: and like a hundred note and you know, some good
- 23:56Speaker 1: stuff and maybe even a surprise gift. If you want

- 24:33Speaker 1: when you need to move stuff as I've been listening
- 24:35Speaker 1: to that and some Team starkd stuff and a wee
- 24:38Speaker 1: bit of Hamilton and a wee bit of Beetle Jess.
- 24:40Speaker 1: So I was actually on my Spotify for the first

- 24:47Speaker 1: There's an Irish true crime podcast called Men's Rea it is.
- 24:53Speaker 1: It's really good. If you like true crime and you

- 24:59Speaker 1: absolutely you should absolutely go listen. It's fantastic. Please please,
- 25:02Speaker 1: please do. And I currently not reading anything for fun,
- 25:08Speaker 1: but if anybody has any recommendations, I would love Although
- 25:11Speaker 1: I'm very tempted to start reading Murder most on Ladylike,
- 25:13Speaker 1: even though I know it's a children's book, but still
- 25:17Speaker 1: and if anyone has any recommendation for somewhere I can
- 25:19Speaker 1: get some really cool stickers because I really want to
- 25:22Speaker 1: get my skating helmet covered because I'm planning to get
- 25:26Speaker 1: my roller skates back out to see if I can
- 25:28Speaker 1: get myself physically moving on them without crying. That's that's
- 25:34Speaker 1: the goal. So if anyone has any recommendations for stickers
- 25:37Speaker 1: I can cover my helmet in, that would be super great.
- 25:40Speaker 1: And on that note, I'm going to bid you farewell
- 25:44Speaker 1: and I will check to you soon. Adios, or of
