- 0:28Good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31It's a little quiet in here today because most of the
- 0:33chickens, as soon as I open the gate took off.
- 0:36Because there are a lot of bugs around outside had a lot of
- 0:39rain. Lots of bugs mean, chickens are
- 0:41hunting for bugs, but of course, I've got my one girl here,
- 0:44Winnie with me, who likes to stick by my side.
- 0:47So today, we are going to be talking about turning your
- 0:52weaknesses into a strength. You know, I think that when I
- 0:56ever I go and I talk leadership with people and we do these deep
- 1:00dives into their styles of leadership.
- 1:03And again every leadership is relevant to everybody because if
- 1:05you can't lead yourself you're never going to be able to lead
- 1:07anybody and you got to start with yourself and had a client
- 1:11recently. Say to me, I can't even leave my
- 1:14dog. My dog is terrible.
- 1:15My dog doesn't have any manners and I started laughing.
- 1:18And I said, well that's because you're not being the leader for
- 1:21yourself first and then the dog will follow.
- 1:24And it's so true. We have to have the cognitive
- 1:28awareness to stop and say okay. What am I not doing?
- 1:31Well and often when we have weaknesses don't like to look at
- 1:37them. We like to sweep them under the
- 1:38rug. We don't like to talk about them
- 1:40and when them when someone brings them up it is very weak.
- 1:45It become evasive to it. It's not it's just something we
- 1:48don't want to deal with. We don't want to talk about, we
- 1:49don't want to entertain it. We just want to kind of ignore
- 1:52it and move in a different direction, because he'll heck,
- 1:55it's our weaknesses, right? Why do we want to engage
- 1:57ourselves and talk about our weaknesses?
- 1:59Because it seems So silly and I don't need to talk about my
- 2:02weaknesses, I can ignore them and they'll go away, but they
- 2:05won't they just seem to Fester when we do that kind of stuff.
- 2:08So looking at a weakness is for me, I kind of think of this.
- 2:14And this is a personal take on it.
- 2:16Just even outside of the coaching thing getting into
- 2:19personal development. Many years ago was because I
- 2:22recognized that I had weaknesses and I didn't have answers for
- 2:27the weaknesses and I really wanted answers and I really
- 2:30wanted to figure You're out how to get past them, but I couldn't
- 2:33do it on my own. I couldn't just randomly figure
- 2:36it out. So I had to I had to kind of
- 2:38seek out different tools and different strategies that I had
- 2:43not been, you know, exposed to and that was how I entered into
- 2:46the world of self development. And one of my big weaknesses is
- 2:49the time was that I didn't? Like at all.
- 2:52I owned a business. I did not like it all going out
- 2:55and talking to people and trying to get them to use our services.
- 2:58It mean, it was, it was maddening to me.
- 3:00I, I couldn't stand doing it and it was such a weakness because I
- 3:04like to connect with people inherently, I like to connect
- 3:08with people but there's a part of me that's also as much as an
- 3:12extrovert that I am, that's an introvert.
- 3:15Actually, it's referred to as an a vert when you are a little bit
- 3:18of both of them, you could go in either direction at any time.
- 3:22And that part of me was definitely a weakness where I
- 3:27was like, okay, I don't want anybody to know This, I don't
- 3:31want anyone to know. I like to spend time by myself.
- 3:33I want to hide it. I don't want to talk about it.
- 3:35I was only child. Some people are going to say,
- 3:37oh, it's because you're an only child and they'll label it.
- 3:40So I just hit it. I didn't want to talk about it
- 3:42and then I would fake it and then I would get irritated when
- 3:44I had to try to go out and do this stuff and then it would
- 3:47cause even more problems because then my business program would
- 3:50be irritated with me and like, well why can't you do it?
- 3:53You are the one that goes out and loves to talk to people
- 3:56because I don't want to talk about my weaknesses.
- 3:58I didn't want to say something about it.
- 4:00So So, I had to become very clear on what those weaknesses,
- 4:06brought to the table. Good bad, the ugly.
- 4:08I had to know it all and in the process of discovering this what
- 4:12I what I really uncovered was that this so-called weakness of
- 4:16being able to, you know, go out and talk to people and then
- 4:21really wanting to be alone was actually a gift because I could
- 4:24exist healthfully very helpfully like I could go and do this
- 4:30external. Stuff and then I could also be
- 4:32alone for an extended period of time and not be miserable
- 4:35because I was alone. And what I once thought was a
- 4:38massive weakness, I started to view as, okay, this is a
- 4:42strength. I don't have to hide this piece.
- 4:44I just have to be diligent with how I want to do it.
- 4:47I have to say, I've got my alone time and then I can plan to go
- 4:51out and actually meet with people and feel good about it
- 4:55and start talking to people for a limited period of time.
- 4:58So I just started to set myself. If up differently, like I
- 5:01wouldn't try to make 75 phone calls in a day, and, you know,
- 5:05lots of sales trainers recommend that stuff, oh, sit, dile, dile
- 5:09dile do it's awful and it's not good for the soul and it feels
- 5:13gross. And if someone's telling you to
- 5:15do it, don't it doesn't work. It never works unless you're
- 5:19really compelled to do it. I mean, to just sit and dial
- 5:22non-stop is incredibly frustrating.
- 5:25So what I would suggest is a different approach is looking at
- 5:30it and saying, Okay, I am using this awareness of my weakness as
- 5:35a strength and I'm going to build around it.
- 5:38I'm going to look at myself differently and I'm going to
- 5:40give myself some different tools based on that.
- 5:43So just sit start making out your list of like, what am I
- 5:46weaknesses and then say, well, if I approach this in a
- 5:49different direction and I started thinking of this
- 5:51differently and I thought of this as a strength, what could
- 5:54the strength in this be? And I promise you, you're going
- 5:57to be surprised when you actually see how cool it is.
- 6:00Is to recognize that you are not quite as weak as you thought you
- 6:04were. And those weaknesses are here to
- 6:06give you a gift and teach you something.
- 6:08But you have to ask the right questions to figure it out.
- 6:11So I hope you guys have a great day and enjoy the exercise and I
- 6:14will see you tomorrow.
