A fussy English butler named Carruthers walks into Sam Spade's office, tidies his ashtray, and hires him to go undercover as a chauffeur at Bleakcliff, a clifftop estate near Squid Beach. Someone keeps trying to kill young Kathy McGraw, and the household blames her troubled brother Tony. Kathy blames her stepfather, a psychiatrist and fortune hunter. Before Spade can prove anything, a wartime German land mine goes off in the doctor's office.
