- 0:06Speaker 1: Good morning, Mafia! It's Wednesday, September 30th. This is the
- 0:10Speaker 1: Morning Charge, your daily 10-minute or less Buffalo Bills news hit.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I'm Aaron Quinn, here with Colin Ritchie, bringing you everything
- 0:17Speaker 1: you know before you start your day. Let's get right
- 0:20Speaker 1: into it. The Bills enter Week 4 sitting at 3-0
- 0:23Speaker 1: under Joe Brady, looking to remain undefeated at home with
- 0:26Speaker 1: the struggling New England Patriots team at 1-2 heading to
- 0:29Speaker 1: Orchard Park this Sunday. If you aren't making it to
- 0:31Speaker 1: Highmark Stadium on Sunday, here's where you can catch all
- 0:34Speaker 1: the action. National Television. The game kicks off at 1 p.m.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Eastern on CBS with Ian Eagle and Ross Tucker in
- 0:41Speaker 1: the booth and Evan Washburn reporting from the sidelines. You
- 0:44Speaker 1: can tune in locally to 97 Rock to hear our
- 0:46Speaker 1: guys Chris Brown, Eric Wood, and Steve Tasker bringing you
- 0:49Speaker 1: the home radio call. On national radio, if you're on
- 0:52Speaker 1: the road, ESPN Radio has the national broadcast with Steve Levy,
- 0:56Speaker 1: Max Starks, and Dan Grazano on the call. Now, if
- 1:00Speaker 1: you live in Buffalo, you know it's too early to
- 1:02Speaker 1: forecast the weather just four days out from the game,
- 1:05Speaker 1: but I'm going to give it to you anyway. Taking
- 1:07Speaker 1: a quick look at the forecast, right now the early
- 1:09Speaker 1: projections for Orchard Park are looking pretty ideal in October
- 1:12Speaker 1: for football. We're looking at sunny skies around kickoff with
- 1:15Speaker 1: temperatures topping out around the mid to upper 60s, winds
- 1:18Speaker 1: expected to be fairly mild out of the southeast, and
- 1:21Speaker 1: as of today, rain shouldn't be an issue during the game.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Taking a look at officiating for Sunday, we've got veteran
- 1:28Speaker 1: head referee Bill Vinovich's group. If you're familiar with Vinovich,
- 1:31Speaker 1: you know he's widely considered one of the most let-them-play
- 1:34Speaker 1: officials in the NFL. His crew consistently ranks near the
- 1:37Speaker 1: very bottom of the league in total flags thrown per game.
- 1:40Speaker 1: They won't ticky-tack you with downfield, weak, defensive pass interference,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and holding calls. They let the guys on the field
- 1:46Speaker 1: decide the action. That said, when flags do come out,
- 1:49Speaker 1: expect most of it to happen in the trenches with
- 1:51Speaker 1: pre-snap penalties and offensive holding. One interesting note on Vinovich,
- 1:55Speaker 1: his crew historically carries the lowest home team and cover
- 1:59Speaker 1: rates among active NFL head referees. Home teams actually cover
- 2:02Speaker 1: the spread under 45% of the time while he's officiating.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Now for Buffalo specifically, this crew's been pretty favorable over
- 2:10Speaker 1: the years. The Bills are 6-5 with Vinovich officiating games
- 2:13Speaker 1: in the Josh Allen era. Some memorable games that he's officiated.
- 2:17Speaker 1: In 2025, he was official of the wildcard game where
- 2:20Speaker 1: the Bills won 31-7 against the Broncos. In 2022, the
- 2:21Speaker 1: Bills beat the Dolphins 32-29 and he gave the snowball
- 2:23Speaker 1: warning where he threatened a 15-yard penalty if fans continued
- 2:30Speaker 1: to throw snowballs. In 2021, he was the head official
- 2:34Speaker 1: of the crazy wind 40-mile-an-hour game against the New England Patriots,
- 2:38Speaker 1: where the Patriots won 14-10.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Bill's transaction. Defensive tackle Fedarian Mathis was officially added back
- 2:46Speaker 2: to the roster following his three-game suspension. The Bills had
- 2:50Speaker 2: until Thursday before needing to make a corresponding roster move
- 2:53Speaker 2: to stay at 53 players. Ultimately, the team decided to
- 2:57Speaker 2: release Mathis. Since he's a vested veteran, meaning he's played
- 3:00Speaker 2: more than four years in the NFL, he is not
- 3:03Speaker 2: subject to waivers. According to multiple reports, the expectation is
- 3:07Speaker 2: to sign him back to the team's practice squad. The
- 3:10Speaker 2: team has a spot on the practice squad after officially
- 3:12Speaker 2: signing Greg Dortch to the 53-man roster last week. Through
- 3:16Speaker 2: three games, the Bills have run plays in 13 personnel,
- 3:20Speaker 2: that's one running back and three tight ends on the field, 32.07%
- 3:22Speaker 2: of the time, the second highest rate in the league.
- 3:28Speaker 2: trailing only the LA Rams at 42.4%. Around the NFL.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Some notable transactions have occurred to start the week in
- 3:36Speaker 2: the NFL, including the trade of former first-round pick J.J.
- 3:39Speaker 2: McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings to the New York Giants.
- 3:43Speaker 2: The Vikings received a fifth-round pick back for the quarterback
- 3:46Speaker 2: they took 10th overall just two years ago, back in 2024.
- 3:50Speaker 2: In a corresponding move, the Giants released wide receiver Odell
- 3:53Speaker 2: Beckham Jr., bringing his return to the Big Apple to
- 3:55Speaker 2: an end. Bills legend Case Keenum shined on Monday Night Football,
- 4:00Speaker 2: leading the Bears to a 27-7 win over the Eagles.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Keenum has now won a game as a starting quarterback
- 4:06Speaker 2: for seven different teams. Now, this does not include the
- 4:10Speaker 2: Bills since he never recorded a start in Buffalo. However,
- 4:13Speaker 2: the only other player to win with seven different franchises
- 4:17Speaker 2: is another Bills legend, Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Baltimore Ravens let
- 4:21Speaker 2: Pro Bowl center Tyler Linderbaum walk in free agency and
- 4:24Speaker 2: are having trouble finding a replacement. Ethan Pochek and Javon Gwynn,
- 4:28Speaker 2: the team's two options at center, both suffered long-term injuries
- 4:32Speaker 2: while playing in Brazil, according to head coach Jesse Minter.
- 4:35Speaker 2: The team will now turn to rookie first-round pick Vanga Yuane,
- 4:38Speaker 2: who played guard at Penn State, to fill in at
- 4:40Speaker 2: center long-term. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles announced that quarterback
- 4:45Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield will be out three weeks with a thumb injury,
- 4:48Speaker 2: meaning it's undrafted rookie Jalen Daniels out of Kansas who
- 4:52Speaker 2: will be the team's starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.
- 4:56Speaker 2: It was confirmed that Dolphins running back Devon Achan did
- 4:59Speaker 2: tear his ACL, meaning he's out for the season. Look
- 5:02Speaker 2: for Ollie Gordon and Jalen Wright to take the lead
- 5:04Speaker 2: in the backfield there. Giants pass rusher Brian Burns also
- 5:09Speaker 2: tore his ACL, meaning his season is also over.
- 5:14Speaker 1: On this day in Bills history, we're throwing it back
- 5:17Speaker 1: to September 30th, 1973, for one of the most significant
- 5:20Speaker 1: milestones in franchise history, the grand opening of Rich Stadium.
- 5:24Speaker 1: In front of a packed house of over 77,000 fans
- 5:26Speaker 1: in Orchard Park, the Bills played their first-ever regular season
- 5:29Speaker 1: game at the new facility, grinding out a 9-7 division
- 5:32Speaker 1: win over the New York Jets. OJ Simpson spearheaded the offense,
- 5:36Speaker 1: powering his way to 123 yards on 24 carries. Meanwhile,
- 5:40Speaker 1: the Bills' defense put on an absolute clinic, led by
- 5:43Speaker 1: lineman Earl Edwards, who racked up three sacks on the day.
- 5:46Speaker 1: They suffocated the Jets' offensive line for almost the entire afternoon,
- 5:50Speaker 1: holding them scoreless until a late touchdown with two seconds
- 5:52Speaker 1: left on the clock.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Tonight, tune into the Cover One Buffalo podcast as Greg
