- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Waffer, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland, County
- 0:12of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37They have no access to that anymore.
- 0:39It's done right now. Even unbelievers are seeing
- 0:44mercy. They're seeing the grace of God
- 0:47right now, and we who believe are seeing it.
- 0:51But there's going to come a day when those who do not believe
- 0:56will no longer have access to His forgiveness or access to His
- 1:00grace or His mercy. That may be the worst part.
- 1:05I'm judging him. Every breath you breathe is
- 1:08God's grace at work. If you could see things from His
- 1:11perspective, you'd likely see many more specific examples of
- 1:15the way He protects and keeps you from events or paths that
- 1:20would lead you to destruction. In this moment, there's nothing
- 1:23you can do to exceed the limits of that grace.
- 1:27But as Pastor Lewis will warn in today's message, a day is coming
- 1:31when His grace will be retracted, and only those who
- 1:34have accepted it will spend eternity with him.
- 1:38Now here's Pastor Lewis in the Book of Second Thessalonians,
- 1:41chapter one with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:45These are things that are evident or that should be
- 1:48evident in our own lives. We should have this, this faith
- 1:51that should be growing, you know, and we and we do that by
- 1:54doing, we're doing the day we, we're, we're in the word of God
- 1:57and we do it in prayer and we're doing it through fellowship.
- 2:01And it allows our faith to grow even in the midst of whatever
- 2:05problems are going on. It's a blessing that we can come
- 2:07here because outside of here, people are going nuts.
- 2:11They're looking for answers everywhere and they don't have
- 2:13any solutions. They don't have any answers.
- 2:16And they're bouncing this way. They're bouncing that way.
- 2:18They're believing in this person, they're believing in
- 2:19that person. That theology or that
- 2:22philosophy, it's everywhere out there.
- 2:25But when you come here and you're in the Word of God, we
- 2:29here together help to encourage each other to keep on, to keep
- 2:34on. Just keep on.
- 2:35Stay in the way, stay in the Word of God, stay in prayer,
- 2:40keep Him number one, trust in Him, trust in his Word.
- 2:45And that's the three pillars that we have that faith that
- 2:48that love. But no, we also have the
- 2:50patience. What helps us to be able to do
- 2:52that is the fact that we have patience.
- 2:55And that patience is because of the fact that we know we're
- 2:58anticipating the return of Jesus Christ.
- 3:01This ain't going to last forever.
- 3:03Trouble doesn't last all ways. We are going to have a time of
- 3:08rejoicing, a time of re glorification.
- 3:11We're going to have a time that we are going to be able to spend
- 3:13with the Lord Jesus Christ. This is not the end of the story
- 3:17for us. This is not the end of the
- 3:19story. This is just the beginning of a
- 3:21great eternity that's going to happen when Jesus Christ, our
- 3:25Lord and Savior comes back. Amen.
- 3:28And that's what we're hoping for.
- 3:30And that's the patience that they have, and they're waiting
- 3:33for that. Bless the Lord, bless the Lord.
- 3:36Second Titus. Two.
- 3:38I'm sorry, Titus 213. Just want to go there for a
- 3:40second, Titus, I'm going to start right there.
- 3:44Verse 11211. It says for the grace of God
- 3:47that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us
- 3:50that denying ungodliness and worldly lust, we should live
- 3:54soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for
- 3:59the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and
- 4:03Savior Jesus Christ. Amen, Amen.
- 4:07That's what we're looking for so we can be patient in the midst
- 4:11of all this and that's why they were patient in the midst of it
- 4:14because they were looking for the blessed hope of the return
- 4:17of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
- 4:19So then we go to verse to verse 5 here.
- 4:23Now verse 5 is a verse that's kind of complicated, so we want
- 4:27to slow it down just a little bit.
- 4:29But it says here, which is manifest evidence of the
- 4:34righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the
- 4:39Kingdom of God for which you also suffer.
- 4:43So what Paul is saying here is, you know, he says the fact that
- 4:47you were going through these persecutions, the fact that you
- 4:51were going through these these trials and these tribulations,
- 4:55and you're going through it with patience, that is visible
- 4:59evidence or visible proof of the righteous judgment of God.
- 5:04Now, some would say, well, if you're going through that, then
- 5:06is God really with you? If you're going through all
- 5:09that? That's the kind of doubt that
- 5:11the world likes to try to put in.
- 5:13You know, if you're going through all these problems and
- 5:15you're, you know, you're, you're, you're being oppressed
- 5:18and you're being, you know, persecuted, is God really with
- 5:20you? You sure he hasn't rejected you?
- 5:23The answer to that question is no answer.
- 5:25That question is no. Paul says the reason why you're
- 5:29going through it or the reason it's a blessing that you were
- 5:32going through it, because as you go through that, that is the
- 5:35visible proof and the way that you endure it.
- 5:39The your response to it is visible proof that God is
- 5:43righteous in making you worthy of the Kingdom.
- 5:48This is what papa's saying. He looks at it totally
- 5:51different. No, this is God making you.
- 5:53This is God saying that you are worthy of the Kingdom.
- 5:56And you look at the old prophets.
- 5:58Jesus even thought about the old prophets.
- 6:00He said, look, and you go through those persecutions and
- 6:02all those things, rejoice, rejoice because the prophets
- 6:06before you went through it, because great is your reward in
- 6:09heaven. Great is your reward in heaven.
- 6:13Now we're not saying here, this is not saying that suffering
- 6:17makes you worthy of heaven, and nor is it saying that we add
- 6:22anything to the finished work of Christ.
- 6:24That's not what we're saying. That's not what Paul is saying
- 6:26here at all. We don't add anything to what
- 6:28Christ already did with our suffering, you know, nor does
- 6:32our suffering make us deserving of heaven.
- 6:35It's not like we get brownie points because we suffer.
- 6:37That's not what Paul is saying here.
- 6:40But what Paul is saying is that the suffering brings out the
- 6:43proof or the evidence that God is working in you, that God is,
- 6:48that God's power is upon you, his his grace is upon you, that
- 6:53you are able to endure it. And that's the this is the
- 6:57visible evidence of that. And that's not just the visible
- 7:00evidence to God. God already knows it.
- 7:02The evidence that we show, first of all, we show to ourselves
- 7:06that God is with us in helping us to get through it, but also
- 7:09to other people, they see it. And that's the testimony that
- 7:13gives glory to God. That's the testimony that gives
- 7:16glory to God. So the suffering's in the work.
- 7:19That's just God working through us and he's the one that makes
- 7:23us worthy. It's by his grace that we are
- 7:26worthy. So endurance and suffering
- 7:29proves that God's judgment of them that Thessalonian church
- 7:33was right and shows their fitness for the Kingdom.
- 7:38So in verse 6, now he goes and says, since it is a righteous
- 7:41thing with God to repay with tribulation those who who
- 7:45trouble you, pay with tribulation those who trouble
- 7:48you. You know the one thing we must
- 7:50understand that it is a righteous judgment of God that
- 7:53He keeps his promises. He keeps his promises to the to
- 7:58the, to the, to the sinners and he keeps his promises to the
- 8:01believers. I was always taught when I was
- 8:04younger that unrepentant sin is judged and faithfulness is
- 8:09rewarded. Now we know that God is loving
- 8:12because this is the issue that always comes up.
- 8:14But wait a minute, how can a righteous and loving God, you
- 8:18know, how can he send somebody to hell?
- 8:20How can he judge somebody that always comes up?
- 8:24Yes, God is loving. Yes, God is grace, God is
- 8:29merciful, but we also must look at God as being holy.
- 8:35God is righteous and God is just.
- 8:38So Paul says it is a righteous thing with God to repay
- 8:44tribulation for those who trouble you.
- 8:46So those who are unrepentant sinners and who are troubling
- 8:52those who are believers right now, they may think they're on
- 8:55top of it, like they're ahead of the game, like everything is
- 8:58going perfect for them. Everything is our way, and
- 9:01nothing seems to be going your way.
- 9:03Boy, I wouldn't want to be you. I don't want to be you.
- 9:07You know, look at you. Like, man, I don't want to live
- 9:09like that. Yeah, that's the way they feel
- 9:13now. But just like Lazarus and the
- 9:16rich man, the tables turned and it got to the point where, in
- 9:19fact, Lazarus, you know, when Lazarus was what was in the
- 9:22world, he was a beggar and the rich man had it all.
- 9:26He had it all. It was all going his way.
- 9:28Everything was According to him. But then when they both died and
- 9:32and and had to go and see the Lord, the tables turned.
- 9:36Lazarus was the one that was receiving the good things, and
- 9:41it was a rich man that was dealing with the judgment and
- 9:44the torment. And this is, and Paul is saying
- 9:47that that's what's going to happen here.
- 9:49Those who trouble you, they're going to receive tribulation,
- 9:54they're going to receive trouble.
- 9:56But you, it's a righteous thing with God that for you, you are
- 10:01given rest. You're giving rest with us.
- 10:05So Paul said we're all going to enjoy the rest of God.
- 10:09We're going to enjoy that the rest with Jesus Christ.
- 10:12And that word rest here actually means relief or a release from
- 10:17trouble. It's a release from our
- 10:20laborers, from persecution, from affliction.
- 10:25It's the turning of the tables. So we look forward to that.
- 10:30I could imagine, I can imagine that those who were back in the
- 10:34Thessalonian Church, who was going through all that
- 10:36persecution, they're probably waking up every day looking to
- 10:39see that. Is my enemies drop dead yet?
- 10:42They drop dead yet. Have they been judged yet?
- 10:45It's not quite going to happen that way.
- 10:47But when he returns, that's when they will see the judgment of
- 10:53God. When would this happen?
- 10:54When the Lord you can see it here in verse the bottom of
- 10:57verse 7 when it says when the Lord is revealed from heaven
- 11:01with his mighty angels in flaming fire taking vengeance on
- 11:06those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel
- 11:10of Jesus Christ. Now there's fire that we talk
- 11:13about here. We see it so often in the Word
- 11:16of God and it represents always represents one of two things,
- 11:19fire that represents the presence of God or represents
- 11:22the judgement of God. And usually where the believers
- 11:26are concerned, it represents the very presence or power of God.
- 11:30And that's why it was when a burning Bush that Moses was able
- 11:36to talk to God or God spoke to Moses through a burning Bush.
- 11:39It was the presence of God. When they came on the mountain,
- 11:42that mountain would appear to be on fire.
- 11:45The smoke and the fire and the thunderings of the mountain,
- 11:49that was the presence of God. They were led by a pillar of
- 11:53fire at night because it was the presence of God.
- 11:58But then the judgement of God is for the unbelievers.
- 12:01Fires represent the judgement of God.
- 12:03We see that where the, when, when Elijah called down fire
- 12:07from heaven and burned up the, the, the, the, the soldiers of
- 12:12the king who wanted to do harm to Elijah, when the Lord burned
- 12:17up Sodom and Gomorrah with fire. So that, that, that fire like a
- 12:22judgement. But it also that fire is also a
- 12:24refining fire for us. And when we go into the fire or
- 12:29the Lord puts us into the fire, it refines us.
- 12:32It, it, it, it tears off the bad things that we don't need.
- 12:36And it keeps the very soul things that the, the, the, the,
- 12:39the things that we do need. It helped it, it strengthens
- 12:42those things in us. That too is done through the
- 12:45fire of God. So it's interesting because in
- 12:49some reports you see that it talks about the Lord coming with
- 12:53clouds. And that's when we, we who are
- 12:56looking forward to him coming, you know, that's us looking.
- 12:59We see him coming in the clouds. You know, that's that's for the
- 13:02believers to rejoice in. But for the unbelievers, they're
- 13:06going to see him coming in flaming fire because vengeance,
- 13:10he's coming to put vengeance to strike vengeance on
- 13:13unbelievable. He's coming with judgement.
- 13:16He's coming with judgement and he talks about two groups, the
- 13:20people that he's going to be distributing vengeance to, those
- 13:24who do not know God. Many believe that they are the
- 13:28Gentile unbelievers, those who do not know God.
- 13:31The Bible talks in several places of Gentiles as being
- 13:35those who do not know God, and also on those who do not obey
- 13:39the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 13:41And that would be like your unbelieving Jews.
- 13:44They know God, but they're not obeying the gospel of God.
- 13:48They're not believing Jesus Christ as being the Messiah, so
- 13:50they too are going to be judged as well.
- 13:54Either way, for those of us who believe, it's going to be a
- 13:58glorious day. But for those of us who don't
- 14:00believe, it's going to be her horrific day either way.
- 14:05And then we go to verse 9 and in verse 9 he says there, you know,
- 14:09these shall be punished from everlasting destruction, with
- 14:13everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from
- 14:17the glory of his power. And when you consider this
- 14:23statement, this may be the worst part of judgment.
- 14:28This may be the worst part of judgment, the separation from
- 14:32God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal
- 14:35separation. That means they are no longer
- 14:39have any access to His grace. They no longer have any access
- 14:44to His forgiven, His forgiveness.
- 14:47They no longer have any access to His mercy.
- 14:50They no longer have any access to any of those things.
- 14:53The power of God, they have no access to that anymore.
- 14:57It's done right now. Even unbelievers are seeing
- 15:02mercy. They're seeing the grace of God
- 15:05right now, and we who believe are seeing it.
- 15:09But there's going to come a day when those who do not believe
- 15:14will no longer have access to His forgiveness or access to His
- 15:19grace or His mercy. That may be the worst part of
- 15:23judgement, and that's for eternity.
- 15:26That's for eternity. Right now an unbeliever can
- 15:30repent and have access to not only God's grace, but His mercy,
- 15:34His forgiveness, and he can receive the Kingdom of heaven.
- 15:37But there's going to come a time where that can't happen, That
- 15:40can't happen, so the consequences will be final.
- 15:45That may be the worst part of judgment, in my opinion.
- 15:48And then we go to verse 10. It says when he comes in that
- 15:51day to be glorified in his sense and to be admired among all
- 15:56those who believe, because our testimony among you was
- 16:02believed. So he's coming with, He's
- 16:05coming, He's going to return and he's going to return.
- 16:08And for his Saints, it's going to be glorious.
- 16:10Like we said, it's going to be a glorious day.
- 16:13He's going to be magnified by those of us who believe.
- 16:16That means he's going to be made larger and more evident and
- 16:20they're going to see it in US. He's going to see it in US.
- 16:23I mean, God is never more glorified than when we can look
- 16:28at someone who is a trophy of his grace and His mercy.
- 16:32There are people in our neighborhood, and I'm probably
- 16:35one of them thinking about it. Didn't think I was at that time.
- 16:38Thought I was OK. Now, they probably talk about me
- 16:41like that, you know, but they probably thought that he was
- 16:43never this. This guy ain't ever going to say
- 16:46he ain't going to have him. There ain't no heaven in hell.
- 16:49You know, there are people that were just kind of crazy.
- 16:52They just kind of did some some outlandish things and they don't
- 16:56mess. This guy is this guy is through,
- 16:58you know, he's done. But then God starts working in
- 17:03his heart and you see him again and it's like, Oh my God, what
- 17:07happened? He speaks in a way that makes
- 17:10sense. He's no longer doing things that
- 17:13are crazy. He's dressed in a way that just
- 17:16looks like he's civil. I mean, it just like what
- 17:19happened. And we saw an example of that
- 17:22when the demonics, you know, when, when Jesus went before the
- 17:25demonics, the whole town looked at this guy.
- 17:28They were afraid of him. They were afraid of him.
- 17:30They didn't want to walk by him. But then when Jesus got a hold
- 17:33to him, they saw him sitting beside Jesus and they couldn't
- 17:37even believe it was the same person.
- 17:39That's the glory of God and He's going to do do that with so many
- 17:43people in that day. We are going to be the ones that
- 17:47show glory. It's going to be in us.
- 17:49We want to glory. He's going to be glorified in
- 17:53us. So we believe with those who
- 17:56reflect His glory and not those who have rejected His glory by
- 18:03rejecting His Son Jesus Christ. In John 17, He says, you know,
- 18:08yours are mine and mine are yours, and I am glorified in
- 18:13them. Jesus said I am glorified in
- 18:17them. And then he's going to be, you
- 18:19know, then we're going to look at him and be marveled.
- 18:21The Bible says that we're going to, you know, he's going to be
- 18:24admired among all of those who believe.
- 18:26We're going to look at him and be astonished and we're going to
- 18:29be, we're going to marvel at his presence.
- 18:31We're going to just marvel. We're going to be in awe of his
- 18:35presence. Can you imagine just seeing him?
- 18:38I can't wait to see him can't wait to see him can't wait to
- 18:41see his face. We're going to marvel in his
- 18:44presence. Now those who don't believe
- 18:47they're going to be running from his presence.
- 18:50He's going to marvel. We're going to marvel at his
- 18:52presence. Then verses I'm about to finish
- 18:54up here, verses 11 and 12, it says, therefore we also pray
- 18:58always for you that our God would count you worthy of his
- 19:02calling and fulfill all the goodness, all the good pleasure
- 19:06of his goodness and the work of faith with power.
- 19:10Let's just stop there for a second.
- 19:11So the goodness of God is what they're talking about here.
- 19:16Now he says you're going to be, you know, he says that you know,
- 19:20God would count the I'm praying that God would count you worthy
- 19:24of his calling. That means that God would
- 19:26declare or decree you worthy of his calling, that God's power is
- 19:33working in you and as a result of that you are going to be
- 19:37counter considered, decreed, declared worthy of his calling
- 19:44and fulfill all the good pleasure of his goodness.
- 19:47Now the Bible talks in many places about walking worthy of
- 19:51his calling. We can't do that on our own.
- 19:53We can't do that on our own. We blow it, we blow it, but we
- 19:57do know that God is able to make us worthy.
- 20:00He's able to, He's able to work in us in a way that we will live
- 20:06a life that's worthy of his calling and he says and fulfill.
- 20:13All the good pleasure of His goodness.
- 20:16And it's interesting when you look at the good pleasure of
- 20:19his, of his goodness. It's not just doing good things.
- 20:23It's not just doing good things, but it's doing good things with
- 20:28a good motive, and that motive is pleasing the Lord Jesus
- 20:32Christ, not pleasing a man, not trying to position yourself, not
- 20:38trying to weaken someone by doing something good for them,
- 20:41so you weaken them to an opportunity to take advantage of
- 20:44them later. That's not what this is talking
- 20:46about. This is talking about doing good
- 20:49with good motives. It's good motives.
- 20:53The meditations of my heart and the words of my mouth, OK, are
- 20:58both pleasing to God. Not just me flattering you with
- 21:04my word, trying to butter you up, to weaken you so that I can
- 21:08take advantage of you, or so that I could be given a special
- 21:13favor, or whatever it is that we may want to gain with our plan
- 21:18to butter up or flatter. But this is actually living,
- 21:23living it and having it in our hearts to do that which is good.
- 21:28And again, that only comes through the Spirit.
- 21:31We can't do that ourselves. That comes through the Spirit of
- 21:34God. All this is a grace of God.
- 21:36It goes back to the earlier, that earlier word of grace.
- 21:39All this is a grace of God. To do good things is a grace of
- 21:44God. And then, and then, then we, you
- 21:47know, we finish up with this. The reason why verse 12 is that
- 21:51the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified.
- 21:54That's why he's praying that for them so that the name of the
- 21:58Lord Jesus Christ would be glorified in them.
- 22:01And you and him according to the grace of our God and the Lord
- 22:06Jesus Christ. It's the grace of God that saves
- 22:10us. It's the grace of God that keeps
- 22:12us. It's the grace of God that
- 22:14causes us to be able to stand under persecution.
- 22:18It was the grace of God that caused this church to be able to
- 22:21stand in the tough days. It's the grace of God.
- 22:25And it's the grace of God that's holding us even now.
- 22:28It holds us and it holds those who are not saved.
- 22:32So I just want to say to those who are listening, and there's
- 22:34someone here today that have not given their life to Christ.
- 22:39You've thought about it, maybe you've heard things, saw things
- 22:43that begin to pull at your heart.
- 22:45And you said maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow, maybe the next
- 22:49day, maybe when I get older. I'm not quite ready yet,
- 22:53brothers and sisters, we don't know when that last opportunity
- 22:57comes. We don't know it may be within
- 23:00the next 5-10, fifteen, 20 years, or it could be within the
- 23:05next 5 minutes that we leave here and go to be with our Lord
- 23:08Jesus Christ. We don't know.
- 23:11People are leaving here every day and they're not all going to
- 23:14be with the Lord. So I plead with you, I thank
- 23:19you, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, Repent for your sin.
- 23:26Repent. He is a good God.
- 23:28He is willing and He is able to forgive you and to cleanse you
- 23:33of everything you've ever done, make you new.
- 23:37Repent today. Turn your heart to Him today.
- 23:41Turn from that wicked way and trust Him for your salvation.
- 23:46Do it today, don't wait till tomorrow, do it today.
- 23:49He's ready and He's willing to receive you.
- 23:54His arms are open wide. He's ready to receive you.
- 23:57But there will be a day when it's going to be too late.
- 24:00Let that not be today. Don't tell me, Don't test.
- 24:07It you've been listening to Living Waters of Grace, he
- 24:10wanted you to be aware that this message was given by Pastor
- 24:13Lewis Harrell, an associate pastor serving alongside Pastor
- 24:17Clark. Although you're familiar with
- 24:19Pastor Clark being the voice of Living Waters of Grace, you'll
- 24:22now have the opportunity to hear both pastors on this program.
- 24:26Pastor Lewis is making his way through 1st and 2nd
- 24:29Thessalonians. These books are a constant
- 24:32reminder of the blessings that await faithful followers.
- 24:36But this was often difficult for such young believers.
- 24:39The Second Thessalonians 2-3 says let no one deceive you by
- 24:43any means, for that day will not come unless the falling away
- 24:47comes first and the man of sin is revealed, the Son of
- 24:51perdition. When you choose to remain
- 24:53faithful to God, the one who is always faithful to you, it comes
- 24:57with its own reward. The new church in Thessalonica
- 25:00was thriving, but Paul correctly saw the need to reinforce God's
- 25:05steadfast love and identify him as a promise keeper.
- 25:09Paul's second letter reads like a response to questions the new
- 25:13church was struggling to answer. Living Waters of Grace is a
- 25:17ministry out of Calvary Chapel Westmoreland, located in
- 25:20Greensburg, PA. Are you in the area?
- 25:23We would love to continue learning more about life in
- 25:26Christ together with you. Stop in and see us this Sunday
- 25:29morning at 10:30 AM. When you do, be sure to mention
- 25:32that you heard us here. You'd love to hear the stories
