- 0:00Speaker 1: So I want to begin today with something that's common
- 0:03Speaker 1: to all of us. This is actually something that we
- 0:06Speaker 1: all and this is going to be kind of a
- 0:07Speaker 1: strange way to start, something that we all have in common,
- 0:10Speaker 1: not just with each other. This is something we all
- 0:12Speaker 1: have in common with God. And we don't have much
- 0:16Speaker 1: in common with God. But this is one thing that
- 0:18Speaker 1: we all have in common with God. And if you
- 0:20Speaker 1: don't believe in God, you you might be shocked that
- 0:23Speaker 1: Christians believe this is true of God, because in your
- 0:26Speaker 1: experience with Christians, maybe you don't necessarily think this is
- 0:29Speaker 1: true of us. But this is true of all of us,
- 0:33Speaker 1: whether you believe.
- 0:33Speaker 2: In God or not.
- 0:34Speaker 1: So this is something we all have in common with
- 0:37Speaker 1: each other and with God.
- 0:40Speaker 2: God resists the proud.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I just thought I would get a response. I mean,
- 0:46Speaker 1: isn't that true. I mean that they're proud or like
- 0:49Speaker 1: the arrogant people, the people who.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Are never wrong.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I mean, they're never wrong, no matter what you say
- 0:53Speaker 1: and how you confront them, they're never wrong. You're the
- 0:55Speaker 1: one that's always wrong. God resists a proud and we
- 0:59Speaker 1: all do too. There's just something in me, and there's
- 1:02Speaker 1: something in you that when you bump up against an
- 1:03Speaker 1: arrogant person, you just kind of internally resist them. You
- 1:07Speaker 1: may have to work with them, you may have to
- 1:09Speaker 1: sell to them, you may even have to live with them,
- 1:13Speaker 1: but even you know, even though there's a with there's
- 1:15Speaker 1: an internal resistance because it's so offensive. You may live
- 1:19Speaker 1: and work and sell to them, but you don't enjoy them.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Nobody enjoys a proud, arrogant, always got to be right person.
- 1:26Speaker 1: And the reason is because you always feel distant. And
- 1:30Speaker 1: the reason you feel distant is because they're not self aware,
- 1:33Speaker 1: so they're not able to empathize. They're never able to
- 1:35Speaker 1: get on board with the emotion you're feeling because it's
- 1:39Speaker 1: all about them.
- 1:39Speaker 2: They aren't self aware.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Because they're so self absorbed, which is kind of scary
- 1:44Speaker 1: to me, because since we know arrogant people and proud
- 1:46Speaker 1: people don't know they're arrogant.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Or proud, how do we know if we're not one
- 1:50Speaker 2: of them?
- 1:51Speaker 1: How do we know we're not one of those people
- 1:52Speaker 1: that we don't like and can't connect with.
- 1:55Speaker 2: So I'll just leave that with you.
- 1:57Speaker 1: And if you're wondering the person you live with, they know,
- 2:01Speaker 1: but that's I don't want you know, that's not for now,
- 2:03Speaker 1: that's for later.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Peter who wrote this, Peter who knew Jesus, Peter who's
- 2:07Speaker 1: like one of the first people Jesus called to follow him.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Famous Peter he is who wrote this, that he wrote
- 2:11Speaker 1: this many years after the resurrection of Jesus. And this
- 2:14Speaker 1: is what else he says, because this is something else
- 2:16Speaker 1: we can all agree with. God resist a proud but
- 2:19Speaker 1: he shows favor to the humble. I'm like me too, right,
- 2:24Speaker 1: you too, are like I am, far more prone to
- 2:27Speaker 1: say yes to a humble request. Aren't you far more
- 2:30Speaker 1: prone to say yes to a humble request, even if
- 2:33Speaker 1: it causes you to go out of your way, or
- 2:35Speaker 1: you kind of have to bend to rule, or you
- 2:36Speaker 1: have to do something for one person that you don't
- 2:39Speaker 1: normally do for everybody else, But a humble request, My goodness,
- 2:42Speaker 1: I'm more inclined to say yes to a humble request
- 2:45Speaker 1: than I am. Somebody who's demanding it has to have
- 2:48Speaker 1: their way. So this is something we have in common
- 2:50Speaker 1: with each other for the most part. And according to Peter,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and according to the New Testament, according to Jesus, God,
- 2:56Speaker 1: our heavenly Father, is the same way which is kind
- 3:00Speaker 1: of through the topic of the thing we're gonna talk
- 3:02Speaker 1: about today is this.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Word humble or humility. Humility.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I mean, we all know this, we've experienced. It is
- 3:08Speaker 1: so powerful. In fact, if you're having a conflict with someone,
- 3:13Speaker 1: whether it's family or work or neighborhood or whatever it
- 3:16Speaker 1: might be, when you're having a conflict with someone and
- 3:19Speaker 1: you're you know you're gonna you're coming in hot, like
- 3:21Speaker 1: you got your thing all lined up and you've had
- 3:23Speaker 1: this imaginary conversation twenty times. You know what you're gonna say,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and you're gonna show them you're wrong. I mean that
- 3:29Speaker 1: they're wrong and you're right, and you you come in hot.
- 3:31Speaker 1: When you when in a difficult conversation or difficult environment,
- 3:36Speaker 1: when you bump into humility, it's so off putting. It
- 3:41Speaker 1: just puts you off balance because you're expecting them to
- 3:44Speaker 1: be defensive and they're not defensive. You're expecting pushback. And
- 3:48Speaker 1: the thing is about humility. Humility doesn't push back. Humility
- 3:53Speaker 1: absorbs and sometimes you don't even know what.
- 3:56Speaker 2: To do with it. It's so powerful.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And when two people, when humility meets humility, just about
- 4:04Speaker 1: anything can be resolved.
- 4:06Speaker 2: And this isn't new information. You don't need to write
- 4:08Speaker 2: this down. We know this.
- 4:10Speaker 1: So I want to ask you just the strangest question. Okay,
- 4:12Speaker 1: there's there's no good answer to this, because it's not
- 4:14Speaker 1: even a good question, but to kind of get us
- 4:17Speaker 1: on the same page of where we're going today, are
- 4:18Speaker 1: you are you ever tempted by humility? I mean, you
- 4:25Speaker 1: know what it means to be tempted, right, something that
- 4:27Speaker 1: appeals to a desire?
- 4:29Speaker 2: Are you? Are you ever tempted by humility? About this?
- 4:32Speaker 2: Are you ever tempted to be humble?
- 4:36Speaker 1: No? Right, we don't think of this as a temptation.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Are you ever tempted to be humble?
- 4:42Speaker 2: But you resist?
- 4:43Speaker 1: I rebuke you, humility. I will not give in to you.
- 4:46Speaker 2: You shall not pass.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I mean, do we ever have that internal conversation with humility?
- 4:51Speaker 2: No? Because humility isn't really a temptation.
- 4:55Speaker 1: We resist, but it's definitely a posture that we should
- 4:59Speaker 1: all all adopt.
- 5:01Speaker 2: After all, we like it when we see it, we
- 5:05Speaker 2: like it.
- 5:06Speaker 1: When we're confronted with it, So why would we not
- 5:10Speaker 1: pursue it?
- 5:11Speaker 2: It's kind of odd, isn't it.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Today we're in part three of a four part series
- 5:15Speaker 1: entitled icon, the empowering Invitation of the Cross. As you
- 5:20Speaker 1: know before you tuned innner, before you got here, the
- 5:23Speaker 1: cross is the icon of Christianity. That's we all know
- 5:27Speaker 1: that the icon for Christianity is not a checkered flag,
- 5:31Speaker 1: it's not a gold medal, and believe it or not, it's.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Not a sword. It's a cross.
- 5:36Speaker 1: But the cross is more than just an icon that
- 5:39Speaker 1: represents Christianity. The Cross is an invitation and not an invitation.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Merely to a way of believing.
- 5:44Speaker 1: It's an alternative way of living, it's a lifestyle. It's alternative,
- 5:50Speaker 1: but it is not intuitive in fact. On the surface,
- 5:53Speaker 1: when first approached with this, and if you've been listening
- 5:55Speaker 1: to any of this series, or if you follow Jesus
- 5:58Speaker 1: through the gospels, when your first confronted with the way
- 6:01Speaker 1: of the Cross or the way of Jesus, on the surface,
- 6:03Speaker 1: it kind of seems a little bit crazy.
- 6:05Speaker 2: It might strike you as lazy.
- 6:07Speaker 1: In the Apostle Paul, who wrote you know, almost half
- 6:10Speaker 1: the New Testament, he admits he's like, yeah, on the surface,
- 6:14Speaker 1: the whole thing seems kind of foolish, like a fool's
- 6:17Speaker 1: Errand so consequently, when it comes to the invitation of
- 6:20Speaker 1: the Cross. We're all inclined not to accept the invitation.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Last time we were together, we talked about the fact
- 6:26Speaker 1: that it's not just an invitation, but as the subtitle
- 6:28Speaker 1: of the series says, it's an empowering invitation. It empowers
- 6:33Speaker 1: us to express and experience the power of God. It
- 6:38Speaker 1: positions us to experience the power of God. So last
- 6:40Speaker 1: time we were together, I asked you a question, and
- 6:43Speaker 1: I said, do you want to experience the power of
- 6:45Speaker 1: God in your life? And I was shocked because it
- 6:48Speaker 1: was like dead quiet, like four people said yes. I'm like, well,
- 6:51Speaker 1: there's four, you know, okay. But the question was if
- 6:54Speaker 1: you're a Jesus follower, if you're a Christian, would you
- 6:57Speaker 1: want to experience the power? So we talked about what
- 6:59Speaker 1: does the power of God looked like? And why is
- 7:01Speaker 1: it that getting in sync with the Way of Jesus
- 7:04Speaker 1: or the Way of the Cross positions us to experience
- 7:08Speaker 1: and to manifest the other's first power of God. And
- 7:12Speaker 1: we said as well throughout the series that a lot
- 7:14Speaker 1: of Christians don't even know the invitation to the Way
- 7:17Speaker 1: of the Cross even exists. For so many Christians, faith
- 7:21Speaker 1: is just kind of a one and done, like I
- 7:23Speaker 1: pray a prayer and I got baptized, and now Jesus
- 7:26Speaker 1: is my savior, and the cross is basically just a
- 7:30Speaker 1: good luck charm. Now back to the real world, where
- 7:32Speaker 1: we grade ourselves by comparing ourselves, where we chase the
- 7:35Speaker 1: wind and live to wind. So for the past two
- 7:39Speaker 1: times we were together, I gave you an assignment, and
- 7:41Speaker 1: I promise I'm going to give you a different assignment.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I'm not going to leave you with this one.
- 7:44Speaker 1: But I wanted you to sit in this a little bit,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and I've gotten some really interesting feedback. For those of
- 7:49Speaker 1: you who've really attempted this or thought about this, I
- 7:52Speaker 1: ask you to during the week that when you find
- 7:55Speaker 1: yourself in conflict with somebody, whenever there's tension in a
- 7:58Speaker 1: relationship at home.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Or at work, school, or wherever you are, to.
- 8:02Speaker 1: At least ask yourself, ask yourself, whether you act on
- 8:04Speaker 1: it or not, what would choosing to lose look like
- 8:09Speaker 1: in this situation? What would it look like if somehow
- 8:12Speaker 1: I figured out how can I lose in this discussion?
- 8:15Speaker 1: How can I lose in dissension? How can I lose
- 8:17Speaker 1: in this argument?
- 8:18Speaker 2: What would it look like to.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Let somebody else go first, even though I got here first.
- 8:23Speaker 1: What would it look like to let somebody take the idea,
- 8:25Speaker 1: even though it was my idea. What would it look
- 8:28Speaker 1: like to let somebody else pull ahead and get the
- 8:30Speaker 1: credit to have their way. What would that look like?
- 8:34Speaker 1: So we've been sitting in that for a couple of weeks,
- 8:36Speaker 1: I hope, So moving on. It's interesting and I don't
- 8:40Speaker 1: know why this is the case, and nobody really knows.
- 8:42Speaker 1: But the only miracle of Jesus that Jesus performed, the
- 8:46Speaker 1: only miracle that Jesus performed that's recorded for us in
- 8:49Speaker 1: all four Gospels.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, is the.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Feeding of the five Thousand or the Feeding of the Multitude.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Has some Bibles refer to it.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Now, I don't know why that's the only one that
- 8:58Speaker 1: showed up on all four gospels. Each the Hospitel has
- 9:00Speaker 1: its own unique perspective and a take on the life
- 9:03Speaker 1: of Jesus because of who wrote it. They were all
- 9:05Speaker 1: written early, but one comes from the lips of Peter
- 9:07Speaker 1: one's Matthew and eyewitness John and eyewitness Luke.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Who interviewed people.
- 9:11Speaker 1: So the Feeding of the five Thousand, which was a spectacular,
- 9:15Speaker 1: very public miracle. Right, this wasn't done in the dark
- 9:19Speaker 1: of night. You know, we're healing somebody, and can you
- 9:21Speaker 1: prove it? I mean out in the open. You know,
- 9:23Speaker 1: all these people are fed. And what happens right after
- 9:26Speaker 1: Jesus feeds this multitude of people.
- 9:28Speaker 2: These five thousand men plus women and children.
- 9:30Speaker 1: What happens right after it is not miraculous, but it's
- 9:34Speaker 1: extremely instructive as we think about the way of the Cross,
- 9:39Speaker 1: because right after Jesus feeds this multitude tutive people, he
- 9:43Speaker 1: is offered once again a crown. He's offered once again
- 9:48Speaker 1: a kingdom. He's tempted maybe, or at least he's certainly
- 9:51Speaker 1: offered the opportunity to become the king of Israel. So
- 9:57Speaker 1: here's how it happened. John the Baptist had just been beheaded.
- 10:01Speaker 1: John the Baptist is a folk hero during that time
- 10:04Speaker 1: in Judea, but especially in Galilee. People all the masses,
- 10:08Speaker 1: the normal people love John the Baptist because he called
- 10:10Speaker 1: out the corruption in the temple. He called out the
- 10:13Speaker 1: corruption of the politicians. He was fearless, He did not
- 10:16Speaker 1: care what anybody thought about him. He just said it
- 10:19Speaker 1: like it was and it got on Herod's nerve because
- 10:21Speaker 1: it got personal for Herods. Herod has John the Baptist arrested,
- 10:25Speaker 1: and then he has John the Baptist beheaded.
- 10:27Speaker 2: So there's all this uproar in Galilee and Judee.
- 10:30Speaker 1: And just if you have a visual of the map,
- 10:32Speaker 1: you know, way up high a sea of Galilee, the
- 10:34Speaker 1: Jordan River, Dead Sea, and over here's Jerusalem.
- 10:37Speaker 2: So you got this sort of north south things.
- 10:38Speaker 1: So from Galilee to Judea, people are disturbed and Passover
- 10:42Speaker 1: is coming, it's just a few weeks away. And during
- 10:45Speaker 1: Passover in this region of the world, the nationalistic spirit,
- 10:49Speaker 1: the patriotism of the people, it was at an all
- 10:51Speaker 1: time high because Passover was the celebration of God delivering
- 10:56Speaker 1: the nation of Israel from Egyptian bondage and taking them
- 10:59Speaker 1: to their land. But now they're in their land, and
- 11:03Speaker 1: once again they're in bondage to Rome. So during Passover,
- 11:07Speaker 1: I mean the whole sense of hey, we need to
- 11:10Speaker 1: throw off our oppressors.
- 11:11Speaker 2: It ran at an all time high.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Governor Pilot, would you know, triple the guard around the temple,
- 11:17Speaker 1: send more shock troops into the city of Jerusalem. During Passover,
- 11:21Speaker 1: it was so extraordinarily tense. So Jesus senses all this,
- 11:26Speaker 1: and now that John the Baptist has been killed, I mean,
- 11:29Speaker 1: it just heightens the emotion. And he knows now everybody
- 11:33Speaker 1: is going to look to him because John the Baptist said,
- 11:35Speaker 1: Jesus is the one, he is the Messiah, He's God's
- 11:39Speaker 1: final king. So Jesus does what Jesus does. Instead of
- 11:42Speaker 1: heading to Jerusalem, he heads the other way.
- 11:44Speaker 2: He goes north.
- 11:45Speaker 1: He goes all the way to the Sea of Galilee,
- 11:47Speaker 1: and the text says he went to a solitary place.
- 11:50Speaker 1: He and his twelve apostles to get away from the crowd,
- 11:55Speaker 1: but they spot him, and dozens come, and then hundreds come,
- 12:00Speaker 1: and then thousands come. And he looks at this group
- 12:04Speaker 1: of people and they're like a flock of sheep, but
- 12:06Speaker 1: they're like a flock of sheep without a leader, without
- 12:09Speaker 1: a shepherd. And his apostles are like, let's get back
- 12:12Speaker 1: in the boat and go to the other side. We
- 12:14Speaker 1: need a break. You know.
- 12:15Speaker 2: One of the things we can't imagine.
- 12:17Speaker 1: You know, wherever you are in our modern world, you
- 12:19Speaker 1: can always get away from a crowd. You just drop,
- 12:21Speaker 1: you know, jump in your tricked out suv, you know,
- 12:23Speaker 1: with your care you know, and you just motorcate away
- 12:25Speaker 1: right back.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Then what can you do?
- 12:28Speaker 1: You walk and everybody just walks with you, like we're leaving.
- 12:32Speaker 2: We're going with you. Where are we going?
- 12:33Speaker 1: So no, we're leaving to know whether we'll just go
- 12:35Speaker 1: to so you can't. You can jump on a donkey
- 12:37Speaker 1: and just you know, walk along, so you it's impossible.
- 12:40Speaker 1: This is why Jesus spent so much time at the
- 12:42Speaker 1: see a galley, you could get in a boat. So
- 12:43Speaker 1: the disciples are like, hey, could we take a break,
- 12:46Speaker 1: and Jesus is like no. So Jesus stays because this
- 12:48Speaker 1: is what Jesus does. He looks at this crowd, he
- 12:51Speaker 1: has compassion on them, and he begins healing. The disciples
- 12:54Speaker 1: are like, oh, you know, I thought we're gonna get
- 12:55Speaker 1: a break. So this goes on and on, maybe for
- 12:57Speaker 1: two or three days, we don't know. But on one
- 12:59Speaker 1: particular day they've been there. He's healed all day long.
- 13:02Speaker 1: The sun is setting and nobody's leaving. They're just staying.
- 13:06Speaker 1: And you remember, you remember this part. So the disciples
- 13:08Speaker 1: come to Jesus and they say, hey, Jesus, look send
- 13:11Speaker 1: the crowds away, and here's their cover for what they
- 13:15Speaker 1: really want. Send the crowds away so they can go
- 13:17Speaker 1: to the villages and buy themselves.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Some food, and we can get a break.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Send them away to you know, buy some food, you know,
- 13:24Speaker 1: because you know they're gonna starve out here.
- 13:25Speaker 2: They've been here all day.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And Jesus stares out at the crowd. He feels compassion.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Then he smiles and I love this. And he turns
- 13:33Speaker 1: to the apostles, his disciples, and he says, I got
- 13:35Speaker 1: an idea.
- 13:37Speaker 2: You give them something neat love this, and you know
- 13:41Speaker 2: the story. And they did.
- 13:44Speaker 1: They fed these thousands of people, and the crowd goes wild.
- 13:49Speaker 1: And for them it is not just a miracle, it's
- 13:52Speaker 1: a sign. A sign is something that points to something.
- 13:55Speaker 1: In fact, all of jesus miracles, they weren't just stand
- 13:57Speaker 1: alone miracles. They were all signs pointing to something. And
- 14:01Speaker 1: they realize, this is a sign. The time has come.
- 14:04Speaker 1: John the Baptist was right. This is the prophet sent
- 14:07Speaker 1: by God. He is the one. He just did what
- 14:10Speaker 1: kings do. He fed his people. He's the Messiah. And
- 14:15Speaker 1: the text says this that after the people saw the
- 14:18Speaker 1: sign that Jesus performed. They begin to say, surely, this
- 14:22Speaker 1: is the prophet who has come into the world. This
- 14:23Speaker 1: is God's final king, he is the Messiah.
- 14:26Speaker 2: This is Jesus' big moment.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Because it's a big crowd, and the text is so specific.
- 14:35Speaker 1: This is why the text says there were over five
- 14:37Speaker 1: thousand men. Why that number because five thousand was the
- 14:41Speaker 1: number of a Roman legion. This is the equivalent of
- 14:46Speaker 1: a Roman legion. And they are way up north in Galilee.
- 14:50Speaker 1: And if they decide to march on Jerusalem to make
- 14:54Speaker 1: him king, by the time they get from Galilee four
- 14:57Speaker 1: or five days later, all the way to the gates
- 14:59Speaker 1: of Jerusalem, they would have twenty thirty, forty, maybe fifty
- 15:04Speaker 1: thousand men. So this whole thing turns political in Jesus
- 15:10Speaker 1: knowing that they intended to come and make him king
- 15:16Speaker 1: by force, he knows what's in their heart. It's another test.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Maybe it was a temptation.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Jesus, take it. Take it. They will follow you to
- 15:30Speaker 2: the gates of Jerusalem.
- 15:31Speaker 1: It will be epic, it will be glorious, It will
- 15:34Speaker 1: be an answer to prayer. It will be what the
- 15:37Speaker 1: prophets prophesied You were in the lineage of David, King David,
- 15:42Speaker 1: just take it. Blood will be shed, but that's just
- 15:44Speaker 1: the way of things. Blood will be shed, but that's
- 15:47Speaker 1: the way of kings, that's the way of kingdoms. That's
- 15:49Speaker 1: the way of the kingdoms of this world. It's the
- 15:50Speaker 1: way of the sword. The end justifies the means.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Jesus take it.
- 15:58Speaker 1: And Matthew, who is there, says the most interesting thing
- 16:00Speaker 1: at this point, he uses this word. He says, immediately, immediately, immediately,
- 16:07Speaker 1: Jesus says to his guys, come on, let's go, come on,
- 16:10Speaker 1: follow me. We're going, and they're like no, but now
- 16:13Speaker 1: we want to stay. I mean, this is I mean,
- 16:15Speaker 1: this is this is epic. This is gonna be amazing.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I mean, Jesus like, come with me, takes him down
- 16:20Speaker 1: to this, to the edge of the lake. Get the boat,
- 16:23Speaker 1: put some of the boat. Peter, help me. Peter and
- 16:25Speaker 1: Jesus push the boat off. Jesus, Peter get in, Peter
- 16:28Speaker 1: gets in, Jesus shoves it off.
- 16:30Speaker 2: They're like, wait, what about you. He's like, go why.
- 16:35Speaker 2: We find out later they were with the crowd. This
- 16:39Speaker 2: is our moment. This is when we this is when
- 16:41Speaker 2: we take what is ours. This is when you, Jesus,
- 16:44Speaker 2: this is when you get what you deserve.
- 16:48Speaker 1: And the text tells us that Jesus, you're a king
- 16:51Speaker 1: with all that handed to him.
- 16:53Speaker 2: All that available.
- 16:54Speaker 1: I love this withdrew again to a mountain by himself,
- 17:00Speaker 1: not because he didn't deserve a crown, and not because
- 17:02Speaker 1: he wasn't a king.
- 17:03Speaker 2: He didn't want that crown. He didn't want to be
- 17:05Speaker 2: that king. He didn't want that kingdom.
- 17:08Speaker 1: It wasn't his way, and that wasn't the way he
- 17:11Speaker 1: was going to do it. So instead of marching on
- 17:15Speaker 1: Jerusalem some days later, Jesus and his apostles march two
- 17:22Speaker 1: Jerusalem not.
- 17:24Speaker 2: To take life, to give his life away, modeling the
- 17:31Speaker 2: way the way of the Cross.
- 17:35Speaker 1: And when he gets there, he tries to kind of
- 17:37Speaker 1: sneak in with the crowd and they're not having it,
- 17:39Speaker 1: and they recognize him again, and then he buries himself
- 17:42Speaker 1: in the depths of the city for a week, and
- 17:45Speaker 1: he wants to celebrate a private passover with his guys,
- 17:48Speaker 1: and so he secretly arranges where they're going to do
- 17:51Speaker 1: passover so they can just be away from the crowds.
- 17:54Speaker 1: And the gospel all the gospel writers tell us through
- 17:56Speaker 1: the Gospel writers tell us that the Pharisees and the
- 17:58Speaker 1: teachers of the Law have spies out everywhere looking for
- 18:02Speaker 1: this guy, looking for Jesus, and Jesus has this private
- 18:06Speaker 1: room and only a few people know what it is.
- 18:09Speaker 1: It's such an interesting detail. Jesus works it out himself
- 18:11Speaker 1: behind the scenes, and he gathers the twelve and they
- 18:14Speaker 1: have their final Passover together. And it gets lost on
- 18:18Speaker 1: us because again, the way we read the Bible, we
- 18:20Speaker 1: don't think historically and sequentially. We just drop in looking
- 18:23Speaker 1: for devotional thoughts and God speak to me. And I
- 18:25Speaker 1: get that, I think, I mean, that's a fine way
- 18:26Speaker 1: to read the Bible, except you miss the epic nature
- 18:29Speaker 1: of especially these narratives around around Jesus. So they're gathered together,
- 18:34Speaker 1: and the apostles, we know what they're thinking. They're thinking, well,
- 18:36Speaker 1: maybe this is it. We're in the city, I mean,
- 18:38Speaker 1: we're here now and they've just celebrated Passover. I mean,
- 18:42Speaker 1: all you got to do is just a spark, It's
- 18:44Speaker 1: a powder keg waiting to happen. And it gets lost
- 18:49Speaker 1: on us that in this moment, after they celebrate the
- 18:51Speaker 1: Passover meal, the next thing Jesus does jesus last act
- 18:56Speaker 1: before he's arrested.
- 18:57Speaker 2: His last act before he's arrested, as he washes his
- 19:03Speaker 2: disciples feet.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Now, just to put this in perspective, rabbis don't wash
- 19:11Speaker 1: anybody's feet. In fact, rabbis wouldn't even allow their disciples
- 19:14Speaker 1: to wash their feet.
- 19:15Speaker 2: The only people that.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Washed feet were slaves, the lowest of the low. And
- 19:20Speaker 1: Jesus works out this whole environment where there's not anybody
- 19:23Speaker 1: to wash feet on purpose. So when Jesus stands up
- 19:28Speaker 1: and removes his rabbinical robe and lays it on a
- 19:31Speaker 1: stool and then puts a towel around his waist, they're
- 19:34Speaker 1: all thinking.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Ah ah no, no, no, no, no.
- 19:37Speaker 1: We have seen what those hands can do, and you
- 19:39Speaker 1: are not about to wash our dirty feet. And Peter
- 19:42Speaker 1: says what the rest of them are thinking, and Jesus
- 19:43Speaker 1: is like Peter, sit back down. The pictures have everybody
- 19:51Speaker 1: sitting at a table. That's not the arrangement. The gospels
- 19:54Speaker 1: are clear they're reclining. I don't know how to describe this.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I was going to show you a picture, but it
- 19:58Speaker 1: doesn't do it justice. Imagine you're leaning on an elbow,
- 20:02Speaker 1: you're on your left elbow. You're eating with your right hand.
- 20:05Speaker 1: The person next to you is here. They're kind of
- 20:07Speaker 1: in your chest, and somebody is in there, and it
- 20:09Speaker 1: goes all the way around the table.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Everybody's legs are extended behind them.
- 20:12Speaker 1: They're all facing each other, and Jesus is behind them.
- 20:18Speaker 1: They can all make eye contact with each other. Jesus
- 20:21Speaker 1: is behind them, and this takes a lot of time.
- 20:27Speaker 2: And during all of that time, Look, com here, your savior.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Is on his knees at the feet of men who
- 20:39Speaker 1: would abandon him that very night. One of them, Peter
- 20:48Speaker 1: would deny that even knew who Jesus was that very
- 20:53Speaker 1: night or early that next morning, one of them had
- 20:57Speaker 1: already betrayed him. Judas, that's Scariot, was responsible for making
- 21:03Speaker 1: sure Jesus was arrested that very night, and Jesus washed
- 21:12Speaker 1: judas feet.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Let that sink in.
- 21:19Speaker 1: This is the way of Jesus, This is the way
- 21:26Speaker 1: the cross. This is what eventually rocked an empire and
- 21:32Speaker 1: shaped the world. When Jesus talked about enemy love, love
- 21:36Speaker 1: your enemy, he was not kidding that night they didn't
- 21:40Speaker 1: know it.
- 21:41Speaker 2: That night he showed him how it was done.
- 21:47Speaker 1: And when that most humiliating moment of their life finally passed.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Jesus stands up, puts this forbinic road back on, and
- 21:53Speaker 1: he asked him this question, and they knew better than
- 21:55Speaker 1: to answer out loud.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Guys, do you understand what I have just done for you?
- 22:03Speaker 1: To which they're thinking, other than humiliate us completely, know
- 22:06Speaker 1: what have you done for us?
- 22:09Speaker 2: He says, you.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Call me and rightly so you call me teacher, and
- 22:13Speaker 1: you call me lord, and you're correct. That is what
- 22:16Speaker 1: I am. Guys, I am a big deal. You are
- 22:20Speaker 1: not wrong about that.
- 22:21Speaker 2: You've seen what I'm capable of. You know what I
- 22:24Speaker 2: can do.
- 22:25Speaker 1: We were just in Bethany, and I let Lazarus be
- 22:28Speaker 1: dead for three and a half to four days so
- 22:30Speaker 1: you guys would know who you're dealing with.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I am a big deal.
- 22:35Speaker 1: And what he knew that they didn't know was in
- 22:37Speaker 1: a few weeks they were going to be a big
- 22:39Speaker 1: deal as well. And here's what I know about some
- 22:43Speaker 1: of you. You're a big deal. You are to look
- 22:48Speaker 1: to some of you. You're a big deal in your community.
- 22:50Speaker 1: You're a big deal as a coach. You're a big
- 22:52Speaker 1: deal on the golf course. You're a big deal. In
- 22:54Speaker 1: that ladies group that you lead, and they just think
- 22:56Speaker 1: you're the smartest person they've ever seen, and you've changed
- 22:58Speaker 1: their lives and they're.
- 22:58Speaker 2: So grateful for you.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You're a big deal in your business. You're a big
- 23:02Speaker 1: deal in the boardroom.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Many many, many of you. You're a big deal. You
- 23:05Speaker 2: have leverage, you have authority.
- 23:08Speaker 1: When you speak people a little bit quieter, People write
- 23:10Speaker 1: down what you say.
- 23:12Speaker 2: You're a big deal.
- 23:13Speaker 1: And Jesus says to this group, Hey, you're right, I'm
- 23:15Speaker 1: a big deal. One day you're gonna be a big deal.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Let's let's talk about what all the big deals should do.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Here's what you do when you have a little extra authority,
- 23:24Speaker 1: a little extra resource, a little extra power, a little
- 23:26Speaker 1: extra influence. Guys, he says, do you know what I've
- 23:29Speaker 1: just done for you?
- 23:33Speaker 2: You ready for this? If says it real quick. If
- 23:36Speaker 2: you're not a Jesus follower, you're not a Christian.
- 23:39Speaker 1: I'm so sorry the church hasn't gotten this consistently right.
- 23:44Speaker 2: He says, I the big deal.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I have set for you an example that you should
- 23:53Speaker 1: think about. Nope, write down, nope, agree with Nope, consider Nope.
- 24:00Speaker 1: That you should do as I have done and they
- 24:04Speaker 1: don't know it.
- 24:05Speaker 2: In the moment, he just washed Judas beat.
- 24:13Speaker 1: That you should do as I have done for you,
- 24:20Speaker 1: that you should do for others what I have done
- 24:25Speaker 1: for you, which is what Well, here's what he did.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Here's what he did throughout his ministry. This is what
- 24:30Speaker 1: it means to follow Jesus, this is what it means
- 24:32Speaker 1: to get in sync with the.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Way of the Cross.
- 24:34Speaker 1: He says, I want you, guys, for the rest of
- 24:36Speaker 1: your life, and they did it. I want you, guys
- 24:38Speaker 1: for the rest of your life. And even if he
- 24:40Speaker 1: was here and he was looking at those of us
- 24:41Speaker 1: who claim to be Christians, he would say.
- 24:42Speaker 2: And this is for you too. Do you know what
- 24:44Speaker 2: I've done for you? I want you for.
- 24:47Speaker 1: The rest of your life to choose because it.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Is always a choice. It is an invitation.
- 24:51Speaker 1: You do not have to accept it, but I'm inviting
- 24:53Speaker 1: you to accept it for the rest of your life.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I want you to choose because it's a choice.
- 24:57Speaker 1: And I want you to chance because it is risky.
- 25:02Speaker 1: And I want you to chase. I want you to
- 25:04Speaker 1: be intentional.
- 25:06Speaker 2: I want you to choose. I want you to chance,
- 25:08Speaker 2: I want you to chase humility.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I want you to give into the temptation to go
- 25:16Speaker 1: second or last, or maybe you just don't even go
- 25:23Speaker 1: at all. I want you to proactively, every day, in
- 25:28Speaker 1: in every environment, do for others. And this is for
- 25:31Speaker 1: those of you who are a big deal in my world.
- 25:33Speaker 1: I'm a big deal. I'm the boss.
- 25:35Speaker 2: My jokes are so funny.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I mean, I you know, when you're the boss, you
- 25:41Speaker 1: say I have an idea and the next thing you
- 25:43Speaker 1: know what people are acting on it. I'm like, no, no, no,
- 25:45Speaker 1: it was that. I was just an idea. Come on back,
- 25:46Speaker 1: I didn't that, mauth.
- 25:47Speaker 2: We thought we would wanted to.
- 25:48Speaker 1: You know, some of you live in that world, right,
- 25:52Speaker 1: Jesus says, Okay, here's what I want you to do.
- 25:56Speaker 1: I want you to look for opportunity, don't wait for
- 25:59Speaker 1: it to come along.
- 25:59Speaker 2: I want you to proactively.
- 26:01Speaker 1: I want you to do for others what others expect
- 26:03Speaker 1: others to do for you. I want you to do
- 26:06Speaker 1: for others what those others expect some other people to do.
- 26:11Speaker 1: I don't want you to just do for others what
- 26:13Speaker 1: you want done for you. I want you to do,
- 26:15Speaker 1: actually do.
- 26:16Speaker 2: For others what is generally done for you. Now there's more.
- 26:23Speaker 2: This is so amazing to me. This is the most
- 26:25Speaker 2: amazing part. Is so subtle.
- 26:28Speaker 1: When this was going on, there was something else going
- 26:31Speaker 1: on that nobody in the room knew about. And later
- 26:34Speaker 1: after the resurrection, Jesus talked to John and Jesus tells
- 26:39Speaker 1: John about the other thing going on in the room
- 26:41Speaker 1: that night that nobody knew was going on. Jesus, when
- 26:46Speaker 1: he washed their feet, look up here, he wasn't just
- 26:49Speaker 1: illustrating something. I've set for you an example, he said,
- 26:51Speaker 1: I've set for an example. Okay, you illustrating. Jesus wasn't
- 26:54Speaker 1: simply illustrating something when he washed their feet. He was
- 26:57Speaker 1: responding to something. Remember last time we talked about the
- 27:00Speaker 1: fruit of the spirit, and I said, the fruit of
- 27:02Speaker 1: the spirit all these lovejoy, peace, patients, kind is, goodness, general,
- 27:05Speaker 1: self control.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Those are responses.
- 27:07Speaker 1: You don't get up in the morning and say today
- 27:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna be so patient. No, you wait and then
- 27:12Speaker 1: you respond with patience, You respond with self control, you
- 27:15Speaker 1: respond with kindness. Their responses. When Jesus got up to
- 27:20Speaker 1: wash their feet, he wasn't simply setting an example. He
- 27:24Speaker 1: was responding to something. Here's what Jesus told John later
- 27:29Speaker 1: that John puts in his account of the Gospel, this
- 27:33Speaker 1: is amazing.
- 27:34Speaker 2: This is in the upper room.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things complete control.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Everything is, he would say later and in his great
- 27:50Speaker 1: commission everything in heaven and on earth. Jesus recognizes that
- 27:55Speaker 1: the Father had given all things into his hands, and
- 28:00Speaker 1: that he had come forth from God and.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Was going back to God. This is so amazing.
- 28:05Speaker 1: In that moment during passover, Jesus is overwhelmed with some
- 28:10Speaker 1: renewed or heightened sense.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Of who he was, of the power he had.
- 28:20Speaker 1: He was overwhelmed. He knew he had all the cards.
- 28:24Speaker 1: It was like, in this moment, I'm just kind of
- 28:25Speaker 1: guessing a little bit, because that's all we got to
- 28:27Speaker 1: go on. It's like, in this moment he realized his
- 28:29Speaker 1: heavenly father had said, son, they're the keys, hands off.
- 28:38Speaker 2: All power in heaven and on earth. It's in your hands.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Now.
- 28:43Speaker 2: What are you going to do with it?
- 28:46Speaker 1: What do you do when it downs on you that
- 28:49Speaker 1: you're the most powerful person in the room. What do
- 28:52Speaker 1: you do when it downs on you everybody's looking to you.
- 28:56Speaker 1: What do you do when you realize, oh, I got
- 28:59Speaker 1: more resources and more lous than everybody else? What do
- 29:01Speaker 1: you do in that moment? And this is so amazing?
- 29:04Speaker 1: In that moment, John says, when it dawns on Jesus
- 29:07Speaker 1: or this is renewed realization of who he is and
- 29:10Speaker 1: the power It says immediately, that's when he got up
- 29:17Speaker 1: from the supper and lay it aside, his garments and
- 29:19Speaker 1: taking a towel, he girded himself and he washed their feet.
- 29:26Speaker 2: His immediate what if we live like this? Dad's what
- 29:32Speaker 2: have you led your family like this? Moms?
- 29:34Speaker 1: What have you led your family like this? What if
- 29:37Speaker 1: we loved like this? What if we served like this?
- 29:39Speaker 2: What if?
- 29:40Speaker 1: Imagine if this was the reputation of the Christian community.
- 29:44Speaker 1: His immediate response was to wash the feet of cowards, deniers,
- 29:49Speaker 1: and traitors.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Jesus, you got all the power in the world. What
- 29:54Speaker 2: are you gonna do? I'm gonna give it away.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Hours later, they abandon him, he's arrested, He's flogged in Jesus,
- 30:07Speaker 1: Jesus to whom all authority had been given, refused once
- 30:13Speaker 1: again to leverage any of that power.
- 30:16Speaker 2: For his own sake, for his own benefit.
- 30:20Speaker 1: He chose instead to leverage it for our sake, for
- 30:24Speaker 1: your sake, by every human estimation. As we said last time,
- 30:27Speaker 1: Jesus lost. But what they didn't understand until after the resurrection,
- 30:31Speaker 1: it wasn't that Jesus was against winning.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Jesus wasn't against winning. He was just doing.
- 30:36Speaker 1: He was just involved in an entirely different competition. He
- 30:39Speaker 1: was competing for an entirely different prize. He was competing
- 30:42Speaker 1: against pride. He was competing against arrogance. He was competing
- 30:47Speaker 1: against self sufficiency. He was competing against self absorption, against
- 30:51Speaker 1: do it my way, against you know, I don't need
- 30:54Speaker 1: self control, because self is the middle.
- 30:55Speaker 2: I'm number one, all for one, one for all, I'm
- 30:58Speaker 2: number one. He was competing against.
- 30:59Speaker 1: All that, and he had every right in the world,
- 31:02Speaker 1: as the son of God, to claim it for himself.
- 31:04Speaker 1: He said, no, it's not my way, and it's not
- 31:07Speaker 1: the way of my people, and it's not.
- 31:08Speaker 2: The way of those who choose to follow me. He
- 31:12Speaker 2: was competing for others. He was competing for you. Come on.
- 31:23Speaker 1: His humility is what brought you your soul nation.
- 31:30Speaker 2: He was competing for me, and he won. And when
- 31:33Speaker 2: he won, this is so soays, always so emotional for me.
- 31:38Speaker 1: When he won his father stood and applauded, because, as
- 31:44Speaker 1: Paul would remind us later, Jesus, this is this is
- 31:47Speaker 1: amazing Jesus, being in very nature God never considered equality
- 31:52Speaker 1: with God something to be used to his own advantage.
- 31:54Speaker 1: He was a big deal. He just never acted like
- 31:57Speaker 1: a big deal. He never played the God card. I'm God,
- 32:01Speaker 1: I'll have that, please. He never leveraged it for his
- 32:04Speaker 1: own advantage. Imagine if we live like that. Rather, he
- 32:08Speaker 1: went the opposite way, very proactive. Rather, he made himself nothing.
- 32:13Speaker 1: He made himself a nobody by taking the status and
- 32:16Speaker 1: the role of a servant, washed their feet and being found,
- 32:21Speaker 1: Paul says, and being found in appearance as a man.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Here's our word. He humbled himself. He chose it, he
- 32:33Speaker 2: chased it, he lived it.
- 32:38Speaker 1: And to what degree did he humble himself for you
- 32:41Speaker 1: and me? By becoming obedient to death even death on
- 32:49Speaker 1: across good news. You will never have to do this,
- 32:52Speaker 1: I'm imagining. But if you're wondering, how far do you go,
- 32:55Speaker 1: how low.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Do you go?
- 32:58Speaker 1: That's how far he went. That's how low he went.
- 33:01Speaker 1: He lived this out to the bitter. Crucify him, crucify him,
- 33:08Speaker 1: And so the Cross became the icon for Christianity, for
- 33:13Speaker 1: your faith and mine because the king flipped the script.
- 33:20Speaker 1: That's why I love the lyrics to this song that
- 33:24Speaker 1: our writers wrote some years ago that we.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Sing all the time.
- 33:28Speaker 1: No other king, come on, no other It's not just
- 33:33Speaker 1: song lyrics, No other king.
- 33:35Speaker 2: When neil to wash my feet, prepare a table? Literally,
- 33:41Speaker 2: who was at that table?
- 33:43Speaker 1: The men who would abandon him, deny him, and turn
- 33:45Speaker 1: and turn trader on him.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Prepare a table for his enemies.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Lay down his glory for the least of these, lay
- 33:52Speaker 1: down his glory.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Never played the god card.
- 33:54Speaker 1: He leveraged his power for you and for me and
- 33:56Speaker 1: for the people of this world. That's why it was
- 33:58Speaker 1: good news of great joy for all people. No other
- 34:01Speaker 1: king would withstand or stand for that mockery, to be
- 34:04Speaker 1: led to slaughter.
- 34:08Speaker 2: And to stand in front of.
- 34:09Speaker 1: A governor Pilot, and Governor Pilot's like, okay, defend yourself,
- 34:13Speaker 1: would you? I mean, I've heard the accusations. Come on,
- 34:16Speaker 1: give me the other.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Side of this now. Well, you don't you realize.
- 34:20Speaker 1: I have the power to set you for your crucify you.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Jesus is like, well, you think you do, but you don't,
- 34:28Speaker 1: but I understand.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Take up a cross.
- 34:33Speaker 1: And choose to die with thieves, take up his cross
- 34:36Speaker 1: and give his life for me.
- 34:39Speaker 2: And my friends.
- 34:40Speaker 1: He invites me every day, every single day, and invites
- 34:43Speaker 1: you every single day to say yes to the invitation
- 34:47Speaker 1: to follow him, to embrace his way, the empowering way
- 34:50Speaker 1: of the cross.
- 34:50Speaker 2: And if you say yes, let me tell you what's
- 34:52Speaker 2: going to happen.
- 34:53Speaker 1: If you say yes, you'll discover some feet to wash
- 34:59Speaker 1: that don't deserve to be washed, and you will wash
- 35:03Speaker 1: them anyway, not so you'll get credit, because you won't
- 35:09Speaker 1: even tell anyone, because in that moment, you're doing it
- 35:14Speaker 1: for the one, not for everyone, And in those moments,
- 35:20Speaker 1: our lives.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Are changed. So I want to leave you with a
- 35:24Speaker 2: new question this week.
- 35:26Speaker 1: What would it look like? What would it look like
- 35:29Speaker 1: to chase humility? What would chasing humility look like? For you?
- 35:34Speaker 1: Look up here, not simply responding humbly, that's good. What
- 35:39Speaker 1: does it look like to proactively chase humility like your
- 35:45Speaker 1: savior instead of.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Marching on Jerusalem?
- 35:48Speaker 1: Because you're all powered up and bowed up, and you're
- 35:50Speaker 1: right and you're the boss, and you got the right argument,
- 35:52Speaker 1: and I've worked it all out instead of marching on Jerusalem,
- 35:56Speaker 1: to march to Jerusalem, to give your life away, to
- 36:01Speaker 1: lay down a little bit of your life for them,
- 36:03Speaker 1: for her, from Him, for that group, in the light
- 36:05Speaker 1: of what's happened in your community, or maybe in your family,
- 36:08Speaker 1: maybe with one of your kids.
- 36:11Speaker 2: And I can't answer this question for you, but here's.
- 36:15Speaker 1: What I can almost guarantee you. If you'll ask it,
- 36:20Speaker 1: you'll know. If you'll allow yourself to be tempted by humility,
- 36:26Speaker 1: you'll see and perhaps you'll be changed.
- 36:32Speaker 2: And when the.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Church, if the Church ever rediscovers the way of the Cross,
- 36:40Speaker 1: perhaps the world.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Could change once again. So choose it this week. Chance it.
- 36:49Speaker 2: It's risky, there's not necessarily a bow. Chase it like
- 36:55Speaker 2: your Savior, because that is the way. It's the way
- 37:00Speaker 2: the Cross.
- 37:01Speaker 1: We'll pick it up right there next time when we
- 37:03Speaker 1: wrap up our series Icon the Empowering Invitation
- 37:09Speaker 2: Of the Cross.
