Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: The devastation of dog attacks
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, I spent all weekend waiting for more details about
- 0:03Speaker 1: the death by dog in the Bay of Plenty, and
- 0:05Speaker 1: it's a story that really upsets me, that upset me greatly.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We've heard about the victim. Apparently he was a cheeky,
- 0:11Speaker 1: cheery four year old kid. His family say he had
- 0:14Speaker 1: a little mischief in his smile, a little wild in
- 0:17Speaker 1: his heart, and a heart full of cuteness. We heard
- 0:21Speaker 1: a statement from them I that something had happened, suggesting
- 0:23Speaker 1: this was in Mildy circles. For a while I thought,
- 0:25Speaker 1: actually it was an instant on the Mariah, but it
- 0:27Speaker 1: was not. We heard another person was injured, and presumably
- 0:30Speaker 1: they were trying to save the boy. On social media,
- 0:33Speaker 1: I saw claims that the boy may have razed the dogs,
- 0:36Speaker 1: But that's not the point. That's victim blaming. Now. The
- 0:38Speaker 1: thing that always gets me about these stories is that
- 0:41Speaker 1: dogs should not kill people. But four people have died
- 0:46Speaker 1: at the teeth of dogs in the past five years.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Dogs are man's best friend. Dogs are a useful tool,
- 0:52Speaker 1: but dogs never kill humans the way robots are supposed
- 0:56Speaker 1: to be programmed to never kill humans. Even the dogs
- 0:59Speaker 1: whose jobs are to be security for humans should not
- 1:02Speaker 1: kill other humans, even if the humans are bad. The
- 1:06Speaker 1: only dogs who kill humans are dogs who are owned
- 1:08Speaker 1: or controlled by humans who do not know how to
- 1:12Speaker 1: control their dogs. And if they have dogs who are
- 1:15Speaker 1: not controllable, they are humans who don't realize the threat
- 1:18Speaker 1: those dogs pose. Therefore, they should not be in charge
- 1:21Speaker 1: of dogs. And when these things happen, the concerns start
- 1:24Speaker 1: raising rules and regulations that the bad owners ignore, and
- 1:28Speaker 1: the only thing they do is irritate and criminalize the
- 1:30Speaker 1: good owners. Any dogs that kill that can be traced
- 1:35Speaker 1: to an owner, to me says that that owner must
- 1:39Speaker 1: face a custodial sentence. They're just as guilty as the
- 1:42Speaker 1: dog because your weapon just killed an innocent child. And
- 1:46Speaker 1: I don't know how you live with yourself, and don't
- 1:49Speaker 1: you dare defend the dog? For more from earlier edition
