- 0:07The Boston Braves faced the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field for a Saturday afternoon game on May 13, 1950.
- 0:14The Braves were managed by Billy Southworth and were trying to rebound after a disappointing below 500 season in 1949 that had followed their trip to the World Series in 1948.
- 0:24The Dodgers were managed by Bert Schotton and were coming off a loss to the Yankees in the 1949 World Series during Schotton's first year as skipper.
- 0:31Things were changing in the Brooklyn front office, however. By the end of 1950, Walter O'Malley would own the majority share of the Dodgers and force General Manager Branch Rickey out of Brooklyn entirely.
- 0:41This audio recording is from the Brooklyn Radio broadcast featuring announcers Red Barber and Connie Desmond.
- 0:47Hi folks. Join us now for another Brooklyn ball game here at Ebbets Field brought to you by your favorite Post Serials and their terrific new teammate, Post Sugarcrisp.
- 0:59Yes sir, Post is right back to bring you the Dodgers again as they take on the Boston Braves in the first of a three game series here at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn, USA.
- 1:10This is the old redhead, Red Barber, saying a hi hello to you and Connie Desmond will be along here in a few minutes between the two of us while we'll send you to play by play.
- 1:19And your seat right spang behind home plate is reserved thanks to your loyalty to Post Serials and to your all-out cheers for a sensational new Post Sugarcrisp.
- 1:30So with Post as our host, let's see what's going on in the docket. Oh man, it couldn't be a nicer afternoon.
- 1:38Red goodness, this is the one we've been waiting for. This is it. This makes you feel like it's spring and baseball and like there's no more measles and free tickets to the circus.
- 1:51Anyhow, we'll have a repetition from a fine pitching struggle that took place for its first copy up at Boston earlier this year.
- 2:00Joe Hatton, left-hander for the Dodgers and Byrne Bigford, right-hander for the Braves. They met at Boston and Hatton pitched a two-hit shutout to beat Bigford and the Braves.
- 2:11And thereby Mr. Hatton earned himself the award which comes to the fellows who deliver shutouts, the same as those who hit home runs. A case of Post Sugarcrisp.
- 2:20All right, let's go with the batting orders. Oh, the sun shines bright in Kentucky and right here in Brooklyn too. It's a lovely afternoon for the Braves who have not won a game in the two that played with Brooklyn this year.
- 2:35Jeff Rowe is leading off in center field. Sam Jeff Rowe. Earl Torgerson is hitting second at first base. Bobby Elliott, the big third baseman, bats third.
- 2:50And Gordon, the ex-giant, a Brooklyn boy who lives in a couple of blocks right out back of right field here at Epitts Field. And he's wrecked a vengeance on the Dodgers. Gordon in left field for the Braves. The umpire is now walking out, three of them.
- 3:05Another ex-giant isn't right. Walker Cooper, who was just recently traded, you'll recall, from the Cincinnati Ball Club. Cooper catching. Sisti at second base, S-I-S-T-I, Sibi Sisti. Buddy Carr, who came in at three, at four for two deal with the Giants.
- 3:22Carr is short and Bickford, who hasn't won and lost three times, is on the mound. Lifetime, he's beaten the Dodgers three times, lost to them once. Batting order for the Braves as the meeting at home plate takes place now between Captain Pee-wee Reese of the Dodgers, the three umpires, and Billy Southworth of Boston.
- 3:40Reese is leading off for Brooklyn, playing short of course. George Schuber is in left field. Duke Snatter in center. Jackie Robinson at second base, hitting fourth.
- 3:55Bob Perellaw, the running rifle, and right batting fifth. Big-Gil Hodges with those meat hooks for hands at first base. Billy Cox at third. Bruce Edwards is catching to give Campanella a little more rest there with that torn muscle in his leg.
- 4:12And the pitcher is Joe Hatton. The umpire is Larry Gets, back of the plate, falling balls from strikes. Two associates on the bases will be Lou Jordan, stationed at first, Frank Dastoli at third. That's the original station before you have any base run.
- 4:28That's where the base umpire's shift, depending and reflecting upon how many rain you've got on and when you've got it.
- 4:35Now we were just giving you the book and batting order a moment ago. Talking about the Dodgers, well you ask, and they'll tell you that it's good to be champs, but that it's better to stay champs.
- 4:46And because they want to keep that kind of flying right here at Everett Steel, they're mighty careful about physical condition. Ask an expert like Jake Pitler.
- 4:56Oh, sugar for Jake, the Dodgers pepper at first base coach. What that involves, and he'll tell you, friend, you'll never get the first base to talk to me in any conditioning program unless you start with the right kind of meal.
- 5:11Jake got a point there for every one of us.
- 5:15Remember friends, you just aren't eating the right kind of meals unless you start with a proper breakfast. One that includes fruit, bread and butter, beverage, and cereal.
- 5:27That's what you should have to get a bright start every new day. When you're choosing that cereal for your breakfast, you make that cereal a nourishing post cereal.
- 5:38So do yourself a favor here, eat a butter breakfast every live long morning with your favorite post cereal included.
- 5:49Discussion going on at home plate, going over the ground rules. Whenever you have the first game of a series in a ballpark, and especially if teams have not been in the park in some time, the Braves haven't been here since last year,
- 6:03by then you have to go over the ground rules. For example, the umpires and the two team representatives must be in thorough agreement as to whether a ball is in play at this particular point of real estate, and whether it is out of play there.
- 6:18What about a long ball here? What about a pitch ball there? What about a ball that gets up against the bench out there in the bullpen? What about a ball by the exit gate, right center field?
- 6:30What about a ball that may get down in that queer little corner in left field where you have an angle of six that jumps right down?
- 6:38What about the screen here that's 20 feet high on top of this 20 foot concrete wall? Suppose you hit a ball through there.
- 6:44I suppose a ball bounces back to the scoreboard and comes out on the playing field. Those are the things that they discuss. Maybe you're walking around, what do those guys do when they get up there and talk?
- 6:53Ask each other where to have done it? No, it isn't that at all. It's just the business of a thorough understanding, and you can never go wrong if you've got a thorough understanding beforehand.
- 7:03Some of the bitter arguments that come up in baseball are on situations that come up that were not canvassed in the pregame discussion and are not covered by the ground rules.
- 7:13And as far as ground rules, Breach Park are concerned, each manager makes out the ground rules for his own park. In other words, it is the job of the Boston Braves to understand what the ground rules are as set up by the Dodgers here at Ebbets Field.
- 7:31When Brooklyn goes to Boston, they then have to understand what are the ground rules that the Braves have undertaken to put the ball park.
- 7:39Now, first base on fire, Jordan walking down the line toward his second. Big Frank that's calling. Going down toward third, Billy Southworth, who's his own third base coach.
- 7:49Going down there and in just a second, the Brooklyn Cubs will go out and take the field and we'll be off.
- 7:56It's always news about anything in Brooklyn, especially the Dodgers. A ball game is always news. I don't think it's news that we've got to find crowds before they come here.
- 8:08I mean, however, it is news and it's wonderful news. This one.
- 8:16Why this is the afternoon.
- 8:30Brooklyn opening up its first home stand. Tomorrow is a single game at two o'clock. Then Monday night, the Braves here tonight.
- 8:38Then the Western clubs come in left by the Cardinals who will be here Tuesdays, Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon and Thursday will be ladies day.
- 8:46Never a dull day for the Dodgers and certainly never on ladies day.
- 8:49Pittsburgh is in for a night game Friday next week, Saturday game a week from today and then next Sunday, May 21, it is Cincinnati remaining for Monday night, May 22.
- 9:00Then the Cubs, the 23rd, 24th, 25th and on the 24th a night game. Now the Star Spangled Banner.
- 9:23A
- 9:45Oh
- 10:15Oh
- 10:32The status building is just played and song the national anthem which is a customer
- 10:39Every ball game is played not just special occasions
- 10:43The Dodgers are a field in their white home suits
- 10:47in the light blue which is called Brooklyn blue
- 10:51Joe Hatton on the mound won a game which was a shutout to his affair at Boston's expensive of a
- 10:58Hatton has been uniformly successful since he got into the league against Boston
- 11:02He's beaten him ten times and he's got four reversals
- 11:05Bruce Edwards catching, Hatton at first base
- 11:08Jackie Robinson now mostly picks the stars at second
- 11:12By the way I haven't seen the picture
- 11:15But my wife got to see it at the premiere which was held in New York last week while the Dodgers were still out on the road
- 11:22And she told me what I've heard from so many other people
- 11:26That it's a very excellent picture and that Robinson is fine
- 11:30Plays his role extremely well on the plate
- 11:33Robinson is second, Reese is short, Billy Cox is at third
- 11:37The rookie Bobby Morgan is being arrested on the bench a little bit hoping that'll perk him up
- 11:41Out in left field is George Schuber
- 11:44Center fielder is Duke Snyder
- 11:47Right fielder Pirello
- 11:49Sam Jutthorpe is the most hits in the league
- 11:5332 Obin, leading the 352ers up
- 11:56Outfield to the left, curveball is in
- 11:59Also that was mid-faceted, just ball wide
- 12:03Ball one, no strikes
- 12:06The outfield is around toward left
- 12:08The wind is blowing from right to left
- 12:11First base to third
- 12:13The tend to happen deals, fastball swung on, hit down to third, Cox is up with it
- 12:17The ball is over the face and Jutthorpe is out for three running spots
- 12:21So Sam Jutthorpe, the lanky speedster
- 12:25Throwing out third to third, one up and one ball
- 12:29Just to start a thing, that was the first batter, naturally no score
- 12:33And here is Earl Torgerson
- 12:36The tall, lanky, almost draw-bound, left hand hitting first baseman
- 12:40Wears glasses, outfield back into right, he pulls
- 12:44Earl hitting 289
- 12:46The tend to happen pitches, a slow curve, over for Carl Schreiber
- 12:50Johnny Cooney, slender veteran, is coaching that first base for the Braves
- 12:55The southwards, facing along like a restless cat in a new house, coaching at third
- 13:00Throw, slow curve, low and away, left hand pitcher
- 13:04The tend hitter, one and one
- 13:09Not a cloud in the sky, air is soft
- 13:13Just sort of see the leaves and the birds just popping out of the trees
- 13:18One and one pitch, swung on, a ground ball down to second, Robinson up
- 13:22Fires to first and Torgerson's up
- 13:26Two up and three go
- 13:29The Dodgers, if they can win today
- 13:32And if the Phillies get beat, both of them can go on to first place, so they should see what this means
- 13:37If you look at your national standings, you'll find out that you've got 16 with a bunch
- 13:41All of them are then breathing distance to first place, which makes a very tight race
- 13:46Bob Elliott, big, blonde, right hand hitting third baseman, he can blast that ball
- 13:51Hit there in the fall, wear out into left field
- 13:54Also the wind is blowing into left
- 13:56Outfield's going drastically that way, the infield back
- 13:59Now he's hitting 244, swings in, let's see if he can blow out that fair ball
- 14:04Back one
- 14:12It is better than 19 runs, he leaves the ball from that department
- 14:17Go, swung on, back ball, out to third
- 14:20Two
- 14:28Coach Sturrios, mighty happy to be sending you this ball game from Brooklyn
- 14:32Sending it to you wherever you're listening from coast to coast
- 14:37No balls, two strikes
- 14:42Elliott dug in, two out, nobody on, pitch, curve into the dirt in front of the plate
- 14:47Oh, hadn't tried to put a little too much on that, snap it off
- 14:51He's also trying to pitch it low and make Buston Bogg go after a bad ball
- 15:01Fine crowd here at Brooklyn, one or two pitch, swung on, a line drive hit through left field to a base hop
- 15:07Elliott on, ball kept by left field to Schumacher, going into second
- 15:11First second by Robinson and it's the first pitch of the game, the first runner
- 15:17Now the Buston boys, Sid Gordon, he's up, right man hitter
- 15:23He's always hit well against Brooklyn, fighting a 262
- 15:28He leaves the brave in the matter of home runs, he's got seven
- 15:32Sidney Northam-Stantz, strong, stocky, slow curve, high outside, ball one
- 15:42Elliott at first
- 15:54Hatton down, checks the runner first, pitches, curve ball just low and inside
- 16:00Ball two, run off
- 16:10Hatton reaches the side, now stops in his pitching move, deals, curve, high outside, ball three
- 16:17So it goes behind, three nothing, all curve, ball one
- 16:20Here's the third pitch, Sid Gordon, Chris Edwards, playing the 12th pitcher, off and from the plate, a couple of paces
- 16:27Before he would return the agate
- 16:36Here's the three nothing pitch, fastball low, ball four
- 16:40Ball is placed in the crowd on simple, empty bounces, single by Elliott, it's colored by a base on Buster Gordon
- 16:47And now Willard Marshall gets in, the players are threatening with two fouls, he's in the first inning, he'll score
- 16:52Man at first and second, Edwards out the mound, stocky, good batter, he'll have it
- 16:57Marshall is a left hand batter, hitting 261
- 17:02Hit them to pull, the outfield shifting back now to right
- 17:07Outfield has been almost like it was on a shuttle train here in the first inning, where they've been switching back and forth
- 17:13Very extreme on these hitters
- 17:17Marshall's winning from the end
- 17:20Elliott being down off second, Gordon off first, left side of the infield back, left side up step, the pitch is
- 17:26Fastball for a false strike, going above the knee, in the inside
- 17:31Now he gets
- 17:33The ball and strike indicator
- 17:37Gordon is now on first place side of second, and the runner to first and second, that's called remains on the line behind third
- 17:44Secret of them probably of course should have the proper angle
- 17:48I think in one pitch, curveball's come on top, got stopped, reached, he's under, under, waiting
- 17:55And he loses, the ball's up, and Elliott scores, the runner's remain at first and second
- 18:00Peewee is in his 11th year, and I have never seen him lose one before, but he lost it, he has no sunbathers, he usually wears them
- 18:07He told you a few moments ago, there is not a cloud in the sky, and Reese, one of the most capable of players, in fact first shot
- 18:14And says that he's so good he calls him his ringer, meaning that he's really too good for the professionals
- 18:20Peewee lost the pop line and dropped two feet behind him
- 18:25Peewee's standing there sort of wiping the tears out of his eyes, and there are tears of complete frustration too
- 18:32As well as looking into that scar
- 18:34So Peewee, the ball has to be scored as a base hit of course
- 18:37Ball wants to touch
- 18:39You have to win for your flower, you know, with two outs
- 18:43So Elliott, who was running, scores
- 18:47And there is a sunsingle with a simple pop line, directly at short, not too hard
- 18:52But Reese just lost it, and you lost it, you lost it
- 18:56And Big Walker Cooper making his first head pass now for the Braves, he's going to catch it today
- 19:02Hadn't rolled, curve ball low and soft
- 19:05Well that was a tough break for Joe
- 19:09A good break for Marshall, giving him a base hit and an unbatted end
- 19:12Short, touch and a back of ake, Elliott of course running with two outs, scored
- 19:16One-nothing Boston, well there is never a dull day at Brooklyn, you see it all with the Dodgers
- 19:21Cooper swinging from the end, hits the Cincinnati at 191
- 19:26Nine hits, 47 up back
- 19:28Swings and hits the ground ball down to short, Reese is up, throws the second, in time for the fourth play
- 19:34So the Braves and the Elder are four outs, and got a run home
- 19:38Cooper hitting into a force out at second base, Reese to Robinson
- 19:43On run, two hits, and the bright sky and the sun intervene to matter
- 19:52Well friends, I want to tell you about a marvelous new cereal that has everything
- 20:02It's post-sugar crisp, the newest member of the family of famous post-series
- 20:07Delicious, sweet, coated with just the right combination of sugar and honey
- 20:12Now an old red says it's got everything, he means just that
- 20:16It's delicious for breakfast with milk or cream and no sugar needed
- 20:21It's wonderful for between meals, snack
- 20:24Or you can just eat it right out of the bag like candy
- 20:27Now think of it, wherever your fun takes you, for a drive to the beach or out to the ballgame
- 20:33That handy package of post-sugar crisp can just go right along with you
- 20:38So get yourself a bag of sugar crisp, try it
- 20:41Hey, on second thought, you better make that several bags
- 20:45Look for it in the big red and white blue cellophane bag at your grocery
- 20:49This sun-shining Saturday afternoon
- 20:51Now that's post-sugar crisp, a cereal that's just plain fun to eat
- 21:02Now move along, the last and first, the new Reese coming up
- 21:05Well, all things happen to you, you can stay up here long enough
- 21:08I never thought he would lose one before in the sign, but he lost that one
- 21:12I noticed that the Boston infielders, especially short-stop cars, very busy
- 21:16Putting up their gloves and curing out from behind them, check the sky
- 21:20Ryan Bickford on the mound, one nothing play with the Braves
- 21:22And Reese up hitting.256, a called strike
- 21:27Fastball off the hand over the inside
- 21:33Reese, 20 hits
- 21:35Play down the deals, curve ball coming up, short-stop cars up
- 21:40It goes over the first infielders up
- 21:43Short-stop to the court, first strike
- 21:46One up, one away
- 21:49George Sugar, hitting at.224
- 21:53Stepping in
- 21:55He has been hitting with a great deal of power
- 21:58Left hand batter
- 22:02So far he's gotten a nod in left field whenever the opposition has started the right hand
- 22:07This is the case with Bickford, who pitches, curve low inside
- 22:11Ball one
- 22:13For the Braves, it is Bickford on the mound and Walker Cooper is making his first appearance back of the bat
- 22:20Cooper returned to Billy Southwood, they used to be together at St. Louis
- 22:24Fastball low, ball two
- 22:27Infield as Earl Targisson at first, city sisters at second base, looks like he'll play there with Connie Ryan, traded for Cooper
- 22:34Gone to Cincinnati
- 22:36Bickford wastes a little time, pitches to all
- 22:39Low inside with a fastball for ball three
- 22:43But a car, the X-Giant, it's a short and the third base by Ballyas
- 22:48Sid Gordon in last
- 22:50Center fielder is Sam Jethro
- 22:53Right fielder, Willard Marshall, outfielder well around for the right, by Saddlin, field deep, three nothing pitches
- 22:58Ball forward, shooter off, fastball just missing the outside
- 23:03First target then to get on, shooter with a walk
- 23:06And that makes the potential time run at first
- 23:11Foul hitting a few ninety-four
- 23:20Post cereals and post nearest, Sugarcrisp keeping the post it on the ballgame
- 23:25One nothing, favor the Braves
- 23:27Snider takes a slow curve low inside his chin, ball one
- 23:32Bickford always gives the Dodgers a very sparing argument
- 23:39Always has
- 23:45Stops
- 23:47Heels
- 23:50Ball two, two and off
- 23:57Two balls and strikes, one gone
- 24:01Sugar leading off first and Ferguson holding the corner carefully against him
- 24:04Jake Fittler coaching the first base for Brooklyn, Milton Stock is coaching the third
- 24:09And the sun is shining brightly, it's a tough sky up above
- 24:14Curve low inside the foul, ball three
- 24:17Bickford cutting himself in the jam now, three and off
- 24:21Also a curve to Duke
- 24:26Foul, Willoway, very strong through the shoulders and chest, left hand hitter
- 24:35Three nothing pitch, fastball high outside the ball four
- 24:40And the man out, Mr. Wolf's the next two
- 24:46There's a fellow who won the batting championship last year and was voted beneath the most valuable player, Jackie Robinson
- 24:55There's nobody now who is being as ripped up, but it is well known as this fellow
- 25:02This star in the motion picture, Jackie Robinson's story
- 25:07Running, hitting the three twenty nine, leading the Dodgers and hitting as you'd expect
- 25:14Now Fularan to a lefty infield up one or two steps and double play depth
- 25:18Pitch is, fastball in for him
- 25:21Back out of the way, ball one
- 25:23We're going to have some action now on the Boston bullpen down in the left field corner
- 25:28Bickford in position, Neal's curve high outside, four ball two
- 25:42Walked in behind two and all
- 25:51Two balls, no strikes
- 26:05Sister, the second baseman has come over to the mound, taking a little time right now, trying to slow Bickford down
- 26:11Changes mind
- 26:19Boston bullpen, going to work, right in the left hander
- 26:25Now the familiar cat at the infield, we want a hit, probably some leading up there, the catch two and all
- 26:31Pitch is, curve outside, four ball three
- 26:35Two balls, no strikes
- 26:42Back, in addition to being a fine hitter, has a very fine curve eyes
- 26:52Three nothing pitch, four strikes
- 26:55Left hander for the Braves is the bonus player, Johnny Antonelli
- 27:00Right hander is Norman Roy
- 27:03Left and right hander, working for the Braves
- 27:06Brumson has the instructions through Milton Stock, how to manage your bridge shotting, once you see one pitch confided
- 27:13Here it is, the runners go, and it is a curve outside for ball four
- 27:18Still not knowing whether the pitch will be a strike or not, couldn't be sure, but there was no throw
- 27:23All four at the plate, the ladies now up for B, they are full of looking
- 27:28Three baseman balls, and catch the two, but goes off the cross to Bickford
- 27:33The batter up is Paul Peretto, who is hitting a 275
- 27:38Way along the way, we got a big minute here at Brooklyn
- 27:45And folks, the post serial people from Bible Creek are very happy to send you this broadcast to know in New York as it always is
- 27:55Over at WMGM, and on Saturdays from at home at Brooklyn, over the Columbia broadcasting system
- 28:03So, got lots of ears right back, and we're glad to have you, we got plenty of room
- 28:07All right, Bickford's in a jam, he's about to jump right over in the pickle bag, please be careful
- 28:13Dwellow up, three all, one out, one nothing Boston pitch, a curve good for a called strike
- 28:18Bickford's been staying with that curve ball, Cooper's been calling for one right after the other
- 28:23This is Walker Cooper, catching for the Braves, catching for his fourth team in the league
- 28:29He was a catch, you know, for Billy Southwick when those Cardinals were winning those pennants
- 28:33And little Billy, runners take their lead, the pitch is hung on
- 28:39Foul, Johnny Adgenale warming up, the left-handed pitcher caught the ball
- 28:47Throws it out, so he caught it way back in, foul ground to both ends, felt Dwellow, hit a whistling foul ball
- 28:54And it's a loud strike, a ball to strike, one nothing, paper to Braves, Schuberth third, Smarter second, Robinson first
- 29:02Three walks from the road by Bickford, pitch is a curve just outside, fast ball, one ball, two strikes
- 29:12See that this wonderful set of reflexes to stand at the plate, take a curve ball just on the outside
- 29:18Especially with two strikes on you
- 29:21That's the mark of the finished major league player that you're not unduly trigger happy
- 29:26Now let's see what Bickford does, he's actually trying to cross up the hitter
- 29:31He deals, it's called strike three, back ball, from the outside
- 29:37And Dwellow turns and slowly walks away, so they tricked him, they gave him a curve just outside
- 29:42Member of the college is looking for another curve, they snuck the fast ball over
- 29:46And more than that, it wasn't a completely fast ball, it was a two-quarter speed fast ball, just a change
- 29:51A little off of it, but a highly artistic pitch, and quite successful
- 29:56That's the first strikeout, so now here we are, down to cases
- 30:02Big Hodges with two down and three on, last to the first inning
- 30:08Not too long to what left, one nothing in favor of the Braves, the cause of the sun
- 30:14Reese with two down, lost a little pop fly at shortstop, never touched, ball dropped, foot behind him, the run came in
- 30:20Pitch, sharp curve low outside, four ball one
- 30:26Victor trying to work out of this, sharp work, he's not come out of the dugout at all
- 30:33Just let the battery go, very experienced catcher back at the plate, walker Cooper
- 30:41Three runners, ready to go, two up, there's a ground ball back up the bounce, over to our second base
- 30:46And the throw is over the first base in time, and Hodges is up, nice play by Siskie
- 30:51The bounce over the mound is Hodges, Siskie's swing, Siskie's cut right in, with the second base right in front of the bag
- 30:57And throw off, across his body, without having any time to wait, he couldn't
- 31:02So, Victor pitches out of a jam, and he walks through the hot water and doesn't get stolen
- 31:09No runs, and no hits, three men were left
- 31:13So at the end of the first inning it is a run, two hits, no errors for the Braves, no runs, no hits, and no errors for the Braves
- 31:20Here we go again, and other where around the National League at the end of three and a half innings
- 31:26With Coslow, left-handing them to the Giants at Philadelphia, and Kyrgyzstan is also southward going for the Phillies
- 31:32It is one-nothing for the Giants, the Phillies right now in first place by a game over Brooklyn
- 31:37Chambers, a left-hander will start for the Pirates of Chicago, and Hiller, a right-hander will go for the Cubs
- 31:45Those Cubs have been doing alright, haven't they? Since that, it is at St. Louis tonight
- 31:50In the American League, hooks wise for the Athletics at the stadium against Vic Rashie
- 31:55That's just about to begin
- 31:58Washington at Boston, Hudson for Washington, Stubbs for Boston, and it is two-nothing for the Red Sox at the end of the first inning
- 32:05No score between the White Sox and the Indians at the end of the first inning, Kane for Chicago, Fulop for Cleveland
- 32:10Nothing yet on St. Louis at Detroit, and here we go on to the second inning, the system first up
- 32:15Second baseman, who just played a nice play closing the first inning
- 32:18Right-hand hitter, and Hatton-Kirch in low-ing side for ball one
- 32:25Sisti is off for six this year
- 32:30Half-field, good left, right-hand batter, fast ball is over, ball strike
- 32:34Stubbs, over the last couple of years, is probably South-West's most dependable hitter at Boston
- 32:43Hatton-Pomps, deals, curve, butted foul, Sisti's working first for a base hit
- 32:52One ball, two strikes
- 32:54One-nothing play for the Braves
- 33:07Osterio sending it all the way, and a little bit later on will tell you how you can get the 1950 Dodgy yearbook
- 33:14Keep the ears open here
- 33:17Good job, good job
- 33:21Draw, high, very high
- 33:23Good job
- 33:25Hatton-Pomps, two-two, does, fast ball, strike three
- 33:43And Sisti has not had a hit in seven official at-batch this year
- 33:47So Hatton-Kirch, fast ball, strike three
- 33:57Call, right-hand batter, hitting 175
- 34:06Choke that stick a little bit
- 34:09Half-field back in the right, not playing into call, Hatton-Trolls, ball strike, fast ball on the outside
- 34:15The car has an open stance
- 34:23Spreads his feet
- 34:26Wind blowing into the left-field corner from right
- 34:29Third ball, hit five, run around, outside third
- 34:34Nothing to do
- 34:40The car's done a good job, it's short for the Braves
- 34:43Talking with Billy Southworth before the ball game this afternoon
- 34:47And he said that he was very pleased with the deals that he had made
- 34:51One in which he's been stanky and dark to the Giants, the Tar, the Gordon and Washington
- 34:57Third ball low outside, ball one, one and two
- 35:00And then the recent deal in which he gave up Connie Ryan, an infielder, to get Woff Cooper, the big veteran catcher from Cincinnati
- 35:09On a two-pitch, third ball, left miss, high outside, and she's still into it
- 35:16Two balls, two strikes
- 35:20Don Newcomb is sitting down in the back of the bullpen for the Dodgers
- 35:25Says his arm feels a great deal better
- 35:29Two-two pitch, fast ball's thrown on, there's a high five all out in the deep center
- 35:34Madder is back, sunglasses down, he's under, he has it
- 35:37Pull up the center guard now, two up, two away, the second in
- 35:42And the pitcher, Ben Bickford, who has one hit for 11 tries, kicks in
- 35:48Bad hand, Madder
- 35:58After, back in the right, they're not playing him to get around on the ball
- 36:01Pitch, thrown on, fast ball, really fast, had to turn out in the loop
- 36:08The ball's run straight
- 36:13Boston one, I don't know, here in the second inning
- 36:20Joe throws a curve, thrown on the miss, doesn't break him down for the knee catch
- 36:24Two, three, two
- 36:26Hadden Beals curve ball in there, Bickford Newark in terms of giving the ball
- 36:31And that's Edward, the end of the third, ball straight to three
- 36:35So the Braves went down one, two, three, and then second in
- 36:40Big to feel, leading one to nothing
- 36:42Well look here, fans, here's a breakfast combination, it's just as smooth as a ball
- 36:48And the Braves are back, they're in the lead, they're in the lead
- 36:51Well look here, fans, here's a breakfast combination, it's just as smooth as a million dollar infield
- 36:58Post-Raisin' Grant
- 37:00Crackling fresh tasty brand flakes, plus tender seedless California raisins
- 37:06Yes ma'am, that's Post-Raisin' Grant for you
- 37:09A fruit and a cereal combination, that's just double the list
- 37:14The flakes give flavor to the raisins, and the raisins give flavor to the flakes
- 37:19And like all post cereals, Raisin' Grant is guaranteed fresh
- 37:24So try Post-Raisin' Grant some morning real soon
- 37:28You'll see why, it's post for flavor, post for freshness, post for the most of everything good in cereals
- 37:36Now before we get along into the second inning, let's pause briefly, 20 seconds worth for station identification
- 38:02The first pitch lasts the second inning, the Billy Cox is a curve right over, Brian Bickford returns
- 38:07And Cox is proud of it, it's a high foul ball, out of play
- 38:10And the left field stands to strike two, Bickford pitches that to you
- 38:15In a hurry there, could have gone someplace, he didn't waste any time at all, he always does pitch and roll
- 38:22Cox is off to four
- 38:25He plays the ninth game at Cincinnati, last in Brooklyn played before this one, which is his only game play in third base
- 38:35Slaughter William is outside for ball one, fastball replaced it down there, it's an image of a cheat
- 38:42One ball, two strikes
- 38:52Curve outside, ball two, two and two
- 39:01Cox is a back that is stained dark brown, the throw is a curve, that's two strikes after the pitch
- 39:26One out, last to the second, one nothing, Boston, Bruce Edwards, stocky, acrobatic, strong catcher, hitting 167, fastball low outside, ball one
- 39:39Boy that Bickford got himself out of about all it took before he could get out of the first inning, when there was one gone he walked Schubas, Madeline Robinson, three straight
- 39:47Then struck out for a low, he really pitched to him and got Hodges in the cap to second
- 39:52Pitch is swung on, five ball, the right field, the wind holding it up, Masters underneath, the right field is set and makes the grab
- 40:01For Edwards, two up, two gone and pitching happening, now what's up with that, he has one hit for seven at bats
- 40:14One thing he does well is prompt and beat them out, so we'll see what third baseman Edwards does, step up inside the bat
- 40:26Robinson is also up close to first, he's super down, give him a sign, top five, batting, bases to go, going to make the call, happens trying to check his swing, high inside fifth, without the second baseman
- 40:43At the end of two innings, a run, two hits, no errors for the Braves, no runs, no hits, no errors, but we're very glad you came along to be with us on the broadcast, the best wishes of both serials
- 40:57As you know on the at home Saturdays, the post folks are very happy to keep you posted on the doings of the Dodgers, and if we'd like to sort of keep them touched for future Saturdays, well the very next one on May 20th, Pittsburgh will be here
- 41:14The ears right back for that one, and the Cardinals will be here at Brooklyn on June 17, Pittsburgh again on June 24, Philadelphia, oh there's a hot one, on July the 8th, Chicago on July 29, 690, August 5, these are all Saturdays, home Saturdays at Brooklyn
- 41:35The Braves back again on August 19, Giants on September 2, St. Louis again on September 16, and Philadelphia on September 30, it'd be funny if they'd fight for the 10th on September 30, wouldn't be a surprise, would it to you?
- 41:51Now Sam Jethro, first up and the third, not here, around toward left, Sam is which hitter batting right handed, just throw the most hits of any player in the league, batting in 3.48, he's got 32 good ones, down the ball game being thrown out third to first
- 42:14He'll go back to the plate, swings at a high top fly, going in the short left center, let's see, send a few of his smatters in, glasses down, he has, ready to go for Jethro, one up and one away, beginning the third inning, by nothing, they were the Braves
- 42:32End of two innings, the Red Sox lead in Washington, the American lead 2-0, end of two innings, the White Sox lead in Cleveland, Indians 1-0
- 42:44Earl Torgerson is the batter, lead 286, right up to here, left hand hitter, fastball in his knees, ball wide
- 42:54The Phillies have just come up with four runs in the fourth inning, they go ahead of the New York Giants, 4-1, the end of four
- 43:02Now you're up to date on the post scoreboard, happens to throw to Torgerson, curve, he's flying, top of the out of the center field for a base hit
- 43:09Earl Torgerson goes right around first base, makes his turn, that holds up, snatter, cut the ball off, slipped to his knees with the cover and threw in, the reach is relayed on to the Robinson
- 43:24Little conference out of the mound between Ketchum Edwards and Ketchum Hatton, Elliott hit a solid single until he left field for the first two of the game
- 43:43The first inning moved to second as Gordon was locked and scored as Reese in the Sun lost the simple pop by the short, simple, well not simple today with a sky like that
- 43:57Curve ball is low outside, ball wide
- 44:00For those of you all around the country listening to this post serial broadcast, who may not have heard the first inning, don't want you to misjudge Peewee Harsher, that's the only pop five ever seen him lose in 11 years, the only one
- 44:17So Curve swung on here at the end of the bat, up to first base, Puggett picks it up and puts the tag on Elliott for the out
- 44:26That's the way it talks, no play made on him, moves down to second base
- 44:32Pug on, Elliott retired, Chris Bichman unassisted
- 44:41Gordon, hit in at 2 62, took those four curves and then took his base, passed, first inning, he's a dangerous hitter, he's always hit well against Brooker and always well in this ballpark
- 45:00Brings on Curve and counts the ball deep on the left side of field, it is in there for a big home run, he's set that first in time, hit it to the left side of field, section 32, it's three nothing play for the Braves, here's Gordon running between second and third
- 45:15There he comes on his way up to the plate, out of the south, takes it by the hand and it's a case for the host to the quick to the Sid Gordon household, that's the awards in all for home runs and shut-ups
- 45:30That's home run number 8 for Sid, gives him a total of runs that have been 17
- 45:45He's tough man now, he's in the nice today, he can try to get Ted Williams at the major, the most homer, 8
- 45:51Here's the big hitter, David Marshall swinging and missing, high curve ball, it's no longer a 1 to 0 game, she's three nothing and play for the Braves
- 46:05Sidney a boom run, hadn't comes back, curve ball high outside, one and one
- 46:16That ball was wall hit.
- 46:18When she got up high, you could see it hooking.
- 46:20Boy, that one was a...
- 46:24...from a kind of Desmond's tee shot.
- 46:26Get in here to tell you about him in a minute.
- 46:28There's a ground ball off the pitcher's ball,
- 46:30hitting the tree, and takes him off the...
- 46:36That's out number three.
- 46:38The ball count off the pitcher's ball
- 46:40before it's first hit and retrieving the ball
- 46:42was right up against the runner when he came up with it.
- 46:44Two runs on two hits.
- 46:47How it hits two.
- 46:49Big home run by Six Lord.
- 46:51Well, speaking of my Desmond,
- 46:53I don't know whether he's going to talk about his drop drives
- 46:57or his house out in Florida, Long Island,
- 46:59or about what a nice day it is or anything,
- 47:01but honey, have you got a word for us?
- 47:03Ah, sure have, Red.
- 47:05I got the word on that swell new cereal, Sugarcrisp.
- 47:09Man, it's so delicious, folks eat it right around the clock.
- 47:13Yes, sir, post-Sugarcrisp is such fun to eat.
- 47:16It makes a hit for the whole family.
- 47:18For breakfast, you just pour on the milk or cream.
- 47:22Remember, you can skip the sugar,
- 47:24because Sugarcrisp is just sweet enough.
- 47:27Sugarcrisp, you see, is wholesome puffed wheat
- 47:30coated with honey and sugar,
- 47:33and that makes it a tasty snack any time of day.
- 47:36And you can eat it right out of the bag.
- 47:39It's just the kind of nibbling the whole family will go for.
- 47:42So remember, as a cereal it's dandy,
- 47:45or snacks it's so handy,
- 47:47or eat it like candy.
- 47:49Look for post-Sugarcrisp at your grocery store
- 47:52in the big cellophane bag with the three little Sugarcrisp bears on the outside.
- 47:56Okay, Red.
- 47:58Alright, Comedius, hey, what were you talking about, Tommy?
- 48:01No, Dirk.
- 48:03So here's where he's first up against Big, the last of the third.
- 48:08Right hand hitter, we're in deals.
- 48:11Last ball over for a false strike.
- 48:14Peely hitting a 2.53, takes a pitch outside.
- 48:18One and one.
- 48:20One ball, one strike.
- 48:22She's 3-0 in favor of the big, bold Braves of Boston.
- 48:26Peely swings, there's a high fly ball,
- 48:28hit by the left field corner.
- 48:30Gordon on the left field, it goes over,
- 48:32and makes the catch.
- 48:34Peely, the fire.
- 48:37Well, it just made the catch as the guy that hit the two-run home run just now, Sid Gordon.
- 48:44The Braves actually have put together,
- 48:47except for Johnny Mize,
- 48:49the batting order for the Giants three years ago,
- 48:51used to make all those home runs.
- 48:53They got Big Cooper back on the plate, Marshall out there in right field.
- 48:58Gordon out in left.
- 49:01There's George Schumer, who plays the Brooklyn Swing,
- 49:03the ground ball down to the right side, the second baseman,
- 49:07handles it over the first bend, and that's all for Schumer.
- 49:10They're all too long.
- 49:12And of course, for the Braves, they've got a fellow who can hit their ball a long way.
- 49:18Sam Jetsler, out in center field, doesn't come up with so many long hits.
- 49:23That is as far as home runs go, although he has three triples.
- 49:27But he comes up with a lot of hits.
- 49:30Snider, up the rook, the left-hand batter,
- 49:33takes a high inside fastball.
- 49:36All right.
- 49:37Duke has walked in the first game.
- 49:39He's pregame off, 2-94, still riding.
- 49:44The wind is toward left field.
- 49:47Duke swinging, causes it, and they stand on the mark.
- 49:53While the wind was blowing the way that Gordon hit his home run,
- 49:57he didn't need the wind.
- 49:59This was bellied.
- 50:04Make the deal, a smatter swing, high five all out into deep left center,
- 50:09left field there, Gordon, under, makes the catch for out number three.
- 50:16End of three innings.
- 50:17Let's check out Total's county before you grab the tiller here.
- 50:21I speak in multiple times because I know that all your life
- 50:24you just like to go out and sail those little things around.
- 50:27At the end of three innings, it's three runs, four hits,
- 50:30and no errors for the Braves.
- 50:32Do you concur, sir?
- 50:33Right, sir.
- 50:34Sir, for the Dodgers?
- 50:36Gee, I don't see anything at all, do you?
- 50:39Nothing at all.
- 50:40No runs, no hits, no...
- 50:42Well, kind of, I would ask you a personal question,
- 50:44or an honest answer.
- 50:46Have you ever seen a nicer day?
- 50:47Oh, this is wonderful.
- 50:49Now we can only shoot golf.
- 50:51Boy, you and I are lucky we got a job.
- 50:54Go ahead.
- 50:55We got it.
- 50:57Robinson, Frillo, and Hodges, of course,
- 50:59will come up if you're looking ahead on that part of the list,
- 51:02because the Dodgers got to start making some runs.
- 51:05Their pitching has been sort of wobbly,
- 51:07and that Western trip was accrual as far as they're concerned.
- 51:11But right now, at the present moment,
- 51:13Mr. Haddon must contend with Big Walker Cooper,
- 51:15Sivy Sisti, and Buddy Kerr.
- 51:18The outfield plays his big fellow around to the left.
- 51:25Cooper batting at 188.
- 51:27Nine base hits.
- 51:29He got to hit his first home run.
- 51:31He better be quiet.
- 51:33Three-nothing in favor of Boston here,
- 51:35top half of the fourth inning.
- 51:37Haddon's first pitch swung on, and there's a high five-all,
- 51:40and it's hooking foul and going back into the stand.
- 51:44Schubel is over, right up against the barrier there
- 51:46to watch it sail in, and it's a long, loud strike.
- 51:53Boston out in front, three-nothing.
- 51:56Top half of the fourth inning.
- 51:58Cooper the first time up, the ground ball down to Reese.
- 52:05Big strong, right hand batter.
- 52:07Haddon shows another one.
- 52:09Oh, this one's flying to the left center field.
- 52:11Snyder comes in, under it, and takes it to the off.
- 52:13Ball was probably swiped.
- 52:15Got it flying in position there, left center field,
- 52:18hold it down.
- 52:20So there's one away in the top half of the fourth inning.
- 52:22Brings up City Siste.
- 52:26Siste made a very fine play to get Bickford out of a trap
- 52:30there in the first inning.
- 52:32Hodges checking the swing, and the ball hit over the mound,
- 52:34and Siste scooped the ball up, and got the big gill
- 52:38for the third off.
- 52:40Swings out, that's one of the five-all in the right field.
- 52:43Sweet come for a little in, under it now.
- 52:45Oshade over 드le line, takes it to the out,
- 52:47makes it two up, three down.
- 52:49Bobby Feller has just did a home run for Cleveland
- 52:54in the last half of the third inning.
- 52:56The inning is not complete.
- 52:57Chicago is leading 1-0.
- 52:59As Cleveland came to bat in the last half of the third inning.
- 53:03Here's Buddy Kerr.
- 53:07Ending it 1-7-3.
- 53:09Braves out in front, three-nothing here.
- 53:12made in the wing since.
- 53:21She'll Lawry trees out unless
- 53:23they won't go to back into
- 53:24targets on a second date.
- 53:26The body care of bouncing
- 53:27single.
- 53:28Just our building up three here
- 53:31the first base and waiting on
- 53:39the arrival of the coming up
- 53:42towards home plate.
- 53:43You have a sort of a spasm of
- 53:45control troubles.
- 53:48Walk three men back to back in
- 53:49the first inning and then get
- 53:50out of it.
- 53:51Stalking out Perillo and getting
- 53:52Hodges and a bouncer to second
- 53:53base.
- 53:54Three nothing Boston.
- 53:56At first pitch one on bounce
- 53:57down on the third base line.
- 53:59That says it goes to first base
- 54:01and that is all for the Boston
- 54:04side.
- 54:06Five to three of you're putting
- 54:07him down in your book.
- 54:08No one one hit single by Kerr
- 54:11in the left field right now
- 54:14friends.
- 54:15Once again here's the already
- 54:17I told you a little earlier
- 54:18that I told you how to get the
- 54:191950s to die for your book or
- 54:22this one.
- 54:22Dillon first base the last.
- 54:25I got 30 confidence.
- 54:26You said nothing.
- 54:27You said you wanted to stop

- 55:44Jack walked in the first inning.

- 56:14The second.
- 56:15First base line ball was wrapped
- 56:23quite solidly out there and
- 56:24sister after knocking it down
- 56:26pick it up in a complete turn
- 56:28and threw the first base to the
- 56:29out.
- 56:32Sister you're going to get
- 56:33chance to play it out of the
- 56:34county run.
- 56:34It's dealt to Cincinnati.
- 56:37For.
- 56:38Big Cooper.
- 56:40Carl Perillo.
- 56:42Took calls strike three first
- 56:44base hitter.
- 56:46He's got a little bit of a
- 56:47little bit of a lead there.
- 56:49Hi.
- 56:50Out towards right field.
- 56:52Other it is Marshall.
- 56:54And takes it for the.
- 56:55Carl was telling us.
- 56:57For.
- 56:58Game.
- 56:59Red Nile on the batting cage
- 57:01that he only hit one ball
- 57:02solidly on the entire Western
- 57:04trip.
- 57:05And that one he hit Paul.
- 57:09You have a little trouble.
- 57:10Every.
- 57:10Day.
- 57:15Big Hodges.
- 57:16Got a chance to get the Dodgers
- 57:18well on the first inning and
- 57:19grounded out the system.
- 57:20Turned it a nice play on it was
- 57:22up to out.
- 57:22Nobody on a curve.
- 57:24Busts in there for a call
- 57:25strike.
- 57:26Hodges about to get three oh
- 57:28six.
- 57:29Twenty two base hits.
- 57:34I feel the shade around in the
- 57:36left and they're backed up.
- 57:37You can bet.
- 57:37That one way outside the big
- 57:39hook that got off Cooper Smith.
- 57:47Ball one strike one.
- 57:55Big fruit picking up his time
- 57:56from the veteran receiver.
- 58:00How the one one pitch.
- 58:01Inside.
- 58:03Both of these are anxious days
- 58:04around ball clubs you know the
- 58:06cutting down data.
- 58:08Paints.
- 58:13Ball to strike one.
- 58:18I'll just have to offer what he
- 58:20are.
- 58:20Last half of the fourth inning
- 58:21Braves lead three to nothing.
- 58:24Both serials very happy to be
- 58:26selling it all your way.
- 58:27Becker's let's.
- 58:29I'll just go back to it.
- 58:30I'll just go back to it.
- 58:36All the deuces up to to the
- 58:38count to off nobody on.
- 58:42Last half of the four three
- 58:44nothing Boston.
- 58:45Big Bird comes in with a hook
- 58:47for not knocked off the end of
- 58:48the bat.
- 58:48He hit the ball right off the
- 59:07end of his deck and he could say
- 59:09it.
- 59:09Sort of spinning.
- 59:11Like you would.
- 59:15Take a massive shot.
- 59:16And.
- 59:18They said.
- 59:21Oh go on it first base and that
- 59:23is the first hit off.
- 59:31Billy Cox up struck out first
- 59:33time he's over five since he got
- 59:35back in the lineup.
- 59:36How does it first do out curve
- 59:38ball misses outside ball one.
- 59:41Pickford is sneaky fast.
- 59:44He's got a good fastball although
- 59:46he he doesn't rely too much on
- 59:47that.
- 59:49He likes to fool around with
- 59:50those fast speed hooks.
- 59:52So to spot.
- 59:54But.
- 59:54After.
- 59:56I'm going to second base 50 up
- 59:57with a close the first for the
- 59:59office.
- 59:59And.
- 1:00:00Pickford must have some
- 1:00:01penalizing stuff out there.
- 1:00:03That's about the third Dodger
- 1:00:04hitter that rather undecided
- 1:00:06whether or not to go over the
- 1:00:07pitcher not.
- 1:00:08And checking his swing the ball
- 1:00:09went out the second base and
- 1:00:10system made the play.
- 1:00:12No runs one hit one man left on
- 1:00:14and just like that.
- 1:00:15And that's what's brought back
- 1:00:16again with our post serial
- 1:00:17scoreboard.
- 1:00:23At the end of five innings.
- 1:00:25And Simmons.
- 1:00:26Philadelphia is out in front of
- 1:00:28the Giants four to one four runs
- 1:00:30in the fourth inning.
- 1:00:31Coslow didn't come back for the
- 1:00:33fifth.
- 1:00:33So I'll make it look over there.
- 1:00:35And in that fourth inning.
- 1:00:37Dick Sistler who is just as hot
- 1:00:39as a 79 cent pistol.
- 1:00:42Hit a home run his fifth of the
- 1:00:43season and the second inning
- 1:00:45going on.
- 1:00:46Pittsburgh has just made two
- 1:00:47runs in the second inning.
- 1:00:48Go ahead to nothing over the
- 1:00:49Chicago Cubs.
- 1:00:50Stop.
- 1:00:51There's the same noise tonight.
- 1:00:53On the American League.
- 1:00:55Washington's in Boston.
- 1:00:56And the Red Sox are leading to
- 1:00:58nothing at the end of four and
- 1:00:59a half innings.
- 1:01:00The Stubbs pitching for Boston
- 1:01:02Hudson for Washington.
- 1:01:03It is a two one ball game.
- 1:01:05The White Sox over the Cleveland
- 1:01:06Indians came to play for Bobby
- 1:01:08Foller pitching for Cleveland.
- 1:01:09And it's kind of just told you
- 1:01:10follow her home run the third
- 1:01:11inning for Cleveland.
- 1:01:12And the guys will start for the
- 1:01:13athletics the Polo Grounds
- 1:01:14against the big rash.
- 1:01:17At the.
- 1:01:18I'm not.
- 1:01:19I said Polo.
- 1:01:20The Yankee Stadium and the
- 1:01:21Yankee Stadium today.
- 1:01:22One of the great men all time in
- 1:01:24baseball at Barra is being
- 1:01:25honored.
- 1:01:27This is a day in honor of that
- 1:01:28bar.
- 1:01:29Funny.
- 1:01:30Bad Red Sam just all bleeding
- 1:01:32off.
- 1:01:32He's the Boston Lightning Bolt
- 1:01:34boy can he run.
- 1:01:37Swick hitter batting right
- 1:01:38handed against this lefty Joe
- 1:01:39Hatton the first pitch dealt
- 1:01:41him low for ball one.
- 1:01:47Just will play in Montreal last
- 1:01:49year stole eighty nine base.
- 1:01:53Wings on the high fly ball.
- 1:01:55Deep back.
- 1:01:56One may be gone.
- 1:01:57And it is.
- 1:01:59Way back.
- 1:02:02Tagged up.
- 1:02:03High.
- 1:02:04Far.
- 1:02:06And.
- 1:02:07He touches the ball.
- 1:02:08He leads the league.
- 1:02:09You know.
- 1:02:09He's got a hole in the number of
- 1:02:11base that.
- 1:02:12Is his thirty third.
- 1:02:14And he brings home his twenty
- 1:02:16third run.
- 1:02:16So.
- 1:02:17Topped in that department.
- 1:02:21Just roll really got a hole in
- 1:02:23one of Hatton's curve balls and
- 1:02:24straighten it out.
- 1:02:26Back in section thirty two.
- 1:02:28This is a must on the field and
- 1:02:29it is now.
- 1:02:30A ball to nothing ball game.
- 1:02:33Earl specs Torgerson stubbing up
- 1:02:35batting at two ninety five.
- 1:02:37Steps away from a sidearm curve
- 1:02:39ball.
- 1:02:39One.
- 1:02:41So the Dodgers got a lot of work
- 1:02:43to do.
- 1:02:47Who threw.
- 1:02:49Three.
- 1:02:50Home run balls at Chicago has
- 1:02:52tossed two today.
- 1:02:53One to Gordon and now this one to
- 1:02:55Jeff throw.
- 1:02:56Squeaking curveball outside.
- 1:02:59Bankhead.
- 1:03:00Continues to toil down on the
- 1:03:02bullpen.
- 1:03:03For Brooklyn.
- 1:03:06Dodgers have the tail end of
- 1:03:07their hitting was coming up.
- 1:03:09And the last half of this
- 1:03:10fifth inning.
- 1:03:10That was over and fastball gets
- 1:03:12over for a strike.
- 1:03:15All to strike one.
- 1:03:19Dodgers down for nothing.
- 1:03:20Top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:03:23Post serial very happy to be
- 1:03:24sending it all your way
- 1:03:25wherever you may be around the
- 1:03:26country.
- 1:03:27To one pitch up high ball to.
- 1:03:31All three.
- 1:03:31Three.
- 1:03:36Also strike one.
- 1:03:38Targusson has twenty three base
- 1:03:40hits.
- 1:03:41Move along quite solidly.
- 1:03:45Patent shows three one and this
- 1:03:47is inside a pipe for ball four.
- 1:03:50So after the home run.
- 1:03:52Patent deals up a walk.
- 1:03:55Walk Gordon in the first inning
- 1:03:56and then as Russ told you that
- 1:03:58little pop fly.
- 1:03:59That's why the Boston
- 1:04:03Boston got their first run.
- 1:04:06Home run by Gordon after a
- 1:04:07single by Targusson got him two
- 1:04:09more and just to open up this
- 1:04:10frame with a home run.
- 1:04:17Busted Bob Elliott up one for
- 1:04:18two this afternoon Targusson
- 1:04:20jumps down all first base.
- 1:04:21Here's the pitch to Bob.
- 1:04:22Right.
- 1:04:27In the center field and Targusson
- 1:04:29easily cruised around the third
- 1:04:31base.
- 1:04:31Boy that was a solid rep.
- 1:04:39Over Elliott that's his second
- 1:04:40hit.
- 1:04:43Edwards goes to the mound.
- 1:04:46Captain Reese comes in from
- 1:04:47shortstop.
- 1:04:48Bankhead continues to coil down
- 1:04:50on the bullpen and here is Mr.
- 1:04:52Gordon again.
- 1:04:58No friends.
- 1:05:01Is going to get the Derek.
- 1:05:04And now Dan Bankhead after
- 1:05:05throwing down a fast blazer out
- 1:05:08there starts walking in towards
- 1:05:10the mob.
- 1:05:13Born having scored top half of
- 1:05:15the fifth inning.
- 1:05:17Bankhead as we told you before
- 1:05:18while he was tuning up came up
- 1:05:20with a little arm trouble was
- 1:05:22more in his back.
- 1:05:25And he's back on the firing line
- 1:05:28now.
- 1:05:30Dan came up with a sparkling
- 1:05:32relief job at the Polar Grounds
- 1:05:34and big Don Luke started a ball
- 1:05:37game and only won a couple.
- 1:05:40Dan took up the torch.
- 1:05:42Went on to win the ballgame and
- 1:05:44that kind of cemented him around
- 1:05:46the plate.
- 1:05:47Then as he pitched the ball out
- 1:05:49from the west then the sore back
- 1:05:51and the shot that had put him on
- 1:05:53the.
- 1:05:54Shelf for a while.
- 1:05:55But here he is and it's going to
- 1:05:56be a rather interesting
- 1:05:57experience to see how he's going
- 1:05:59to come along.
- 1:06:01There's a power packed Boston
- 1:06:03lineup.
- 1:06:04And they can really swing that
- 1:06:06wood.
- 1:06:07There's one of them up there
- 1:06:08right now.
- 1:06:09He's going to do it a home run
- 1:06:10his last time up.
- 1:06:15Bankhead looking the situation
- 1:06:17over now is back to the plate.
- 1:06:20The field is deep you bet you
- 1:06:22they are with Gordon.
- 1:06:24Up there swinging that mace.
- 1:06:26They're around in the left field.
- 1:06:28Carl Erskine starts walking down
- 1:06:29the bullpen.
- 1:06:31Bankhead had a fine year last
- 1:06:33year at Montreal he won 20 ball
- 1:06:35games and lost six.
- 1:06:37He's rather a willowy fellow
- 1:06:39with a very good move.
- 1:06:42He shows you a lot of motion out
- 1:06:44there and that ball comes
- 1:06:45whiskey and out of nowhere.
- 1:06:47Really good kick to spins come
- 1:06:49down the curve ball to Gordon.
- 1:06:51I'm going to play.
- 1:06:55One of the score favor of the
- 1:06:58Braves from Beans.
- 1:07:04Bankhead now to his stop
- 1:07:06position runners on it first and
- 1:07:07third.
- 1:07:09Spins comes in with a curveball
- 1:07:10and is over.
- 1:07:11And.
- 1:07:19Larry gets the ball.
- 1:07:20What a beauty.
- 1:07:24Like to.
- 1:07:25Erskine is now often showing
- 1:07:27down on the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:07:28Billy Southworth.
- 1:07:30Hoping for a little more
- 1:07:30business.
- 1:07:31Coaching down here at third base.
- 1:07:34Johnny Cooney is over at first
- 1:07:35today.
- 1:07:35He alternates with Jimmy Brown.
- 1:07:37Former Cardinal captain.
- 1:07:39And.
- 1:07:42Bankhead ready to deliver the
- 1:07:43strike to pitch now.
- 1:07:44Now he comes to Gordon and he
- 1:07:45takes a half.
- 1:07:47The.
- 1:07:48Goes right into the Dodgers
- 1:07:49dugout.
- 1:07:54You all can be here.
- 1:07:55Correctly.
- 1:07:55Went right down that ramp.
- 1:07:56Center.
- 1:08:02Just did a home run of the
- 1:08:03sixth inning with one on his
- 1:08:05fourth of the year.
- 1:08:06We know that Philadelphia
- 1:08:08has a six to one.
- 1:08:09The.
- 1:08:10Last half of the six.
- 1:08:14Bankhead set to work again.
- 1:08:15Come down the big.
- 1:08:16Curve.
- 1:08:18Bow.
- 1:08:20Way back in the left field.
- 1:08:21Seat.
- 1:08:23Or just one out ahead of the.
- 1:08:25Bit too much.
- 1:08:26Pull it.
- 1:08:27Bow.
- 1:08:30The Braves leading four to
- 1:08:31nothing.
- 1:08:33Top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:08:34The.
- 1:08:35Left.
- 1:08:36Center.
- 1:08:37Really.
- 1:08:38Going steady with that left
- 1:08:39center field fence out there.
- 1:08:40And.
- 1:08:41Gordon.
- 1:08:42Way around.
- 1:08:45Be up in the stands.
- 1:08:46Do more.
- 1:08:47This.
- 1:08:49Bankhead working on a tough
- 1:08:50hitter said Gordon.
- 1:08:53Out of the pitch.
- 1:08:54First.
- 1:08:55Ball.
- 1:09:01Bankhead.
- 1:09:02Really let him have it.
- 1:09:03He's got a good pitch on Saturday
- 1:09:04afternoon and got him.
- 1:09:05Swinging.
- 1:09:08One out.
- 1:09:10And brings up.
- 1:09:11Willard Marshall.
- 1:09:15Marshall hitting a two six seven.
- 1:09:21Bankhead.
- 1:09:22Try to.
- 1:09:24Help the Brooklands here.
- 1:09:25Get out of this bad spot.
- 1:09:28One run already in.
- 1:09:29Runners on it first.
- 1:09:30And at third.
- 1:09:31One out.
- 1:09:32And.
- 1:09:33Marshall up.
- 1:09:35Left down here.
- 1:09:36It's like a curve that is low
- 1:09:37for the ball one.
- 1:09:40Willard has twenty four base
- 1:09:42hits.
- 1:09:43Couple of home runs.
- 1:09:45And he's one for two this
- 1:09:46afternoon.
- 1:09:48Single his first time up but
- 1:09:49that was a little pop fly the
- 1:09:51grease lost in the sun.
- 1:09:56Bankhead comes in with his
- 1:09:58pitch.
- 1:09:59Outside.
- 1:10:00And.
- 1:10:02Dan is pitching away from.
- 1:10:03Marshall.
- 1:10:04Hoping to cut down his power to
- 1:10:06pull the ball.
- 1:10:09Although the defensive set up
- 1:10:10for Brooklyn at the outfield
- 1:10:11around toward the right to the
- 1:10:12line.
- 1:10:15Would.
- 1:10:16Post about everything he gets
- 1:10:17his stick on.
- 1:10:18Big and strong.
- 1:10:21Now the two nothing pitch.
- 1:10:22One on and.
- 1:10:23Cut foul.
- 1:10:26Back up over the.
- 1:10:27Brave Wigwam and back into the
- 1:10:29game.
- 1:10:30And.
- 1:10:31The.
- 1:10:32Ball to strike one.
- 1:10:36Top of the fifth running.
- 1:10:38Four to nothing Boston.
- 1:10:42The mother you drive sugar
- 1:10:43crispier.
- 1:10:45Or if you haven't.
- 1:10:47Put that right on top of your
- 1:10:48grocery list.
- 1:10:52Back and working diligently
- 1:10:54here on a tough man.
- 1:10:55Send the fastball outside the
- 1:10:57ball three.
- 1:10:59First.
- 1:11:00To warm up.
- 1:11:04Maybe.
- 1:11:05Shot.
- 1:11:06Will want the pitch hitter for
- 1:11:08Bankhead will be the second round
- 1:11:09up in the last half of the
- 1:11:10fifth inning.
- 1:11:11First.
- 1:11:12Getting tuned up.
- 1:11:13Got him on the back of the
- 1:11:14stove.
- 1:11:17Back at right deliver now three
- 1:11:18one.
- 1:11:21Shucks.
- 1:11:22One of its first base.
- 1:11:23And there goes Elliott the pitch.
- 1:11:24High.
- 1:11:26And this one.
- 1:11:27Is.
- 1:11:28Up.
- 1:11:29Against.
- 1:11:30The.
- 1:11:31In the score.
- 1:11:32Comes.
- 1:11:33Targas.
- 1:11:34Right in the back of him.
- 1:11:37Comes.
- 1:11:38Elliott and so.
- 1:11:39It is now.
- 1:11:41Three runs in.
- 1:11:42Bankhead got by one man.
- 1:11:44With a big booming tipple by
- 1:11:46Marshall off the right
- 1:11:47center field fence gets two more
- 1:11:49in.
- 1:11:50Targas and Elliott.
- 1:11:52Come home to the roof.
- 1:11:55Marshall his second hit.
- 1:11:56A couple of runs about it and
- 1:11:57gives him now a total of 16.
- 1:12:00These.
- 1:12:01Blackholders.
- 1:12:05Six to nothing.
- 1:12:06Favor of Boston.
- 1:12:08Not bad for the fifth inning.
- 1:12:10Better wait for the call on that
- 1:12:11because.
- 1:12:12For a while it took back there
- 1:12:13might be enough to carry to get
- 1:12:14the ball.
- 1:12:15And.
- 1:12:16The.
- 1:12:17Wall is not a practically crawl
- 1:12:20up.
- 1:12:21Rob.
- 1:12:22It.
- 1:12:24Up there now is Big Cooper.
- 1:12:26Walker.
- 1:12:27Swings at the fly ball the
- 1:12:28center.
- 1:12:29Looks like it's going to be deep
- 1:12:30enough to get this run in there
- 1:12:31started making a terrible.
- 1:12:33Here comes Marshall tugging of
- 1:12:34the plate and he makes it easy.
- 1:12:40Number four.
- 1:12:41Comes over.
- 1:12:43And.
- 1:12:44The.
- 1:12:45Number four.
- 1:12:47Comes over.
- 1:12:50Seven to nothing.
- 1:12:55Bravely the Dodgers here at
- 1:12:57Evans Field.
- 1:13:00Thought to run about it and for
- 1:13:01a big Cooper.
- 1:13:06Brings up.
- 1:13:07Sivy Sisti.
- 1:13:09The second baseman.
- 1:13:11He got a chance to play as you
- 1:13:12have to come up with a base hit
- 1:13:13and a three.
- 1:13:18To.
- 1:13:20Back in with a curve ball up to
- 1:13:22my.
- 1:13:23One.
- 1:13:26I just got a lot of work to do.
- 1:13:29Really.
- 1:13:30Seven to nothing.
- 1:13:34About the fifth inning.
- 1:13:38That kid spins in with a curve
- 1:13:40ball and gets it through for a
- 1:13:41strike.
- 1:13:49Raise him counted four times
- 1:13:50here in the top half of the
- 1:13:51fifth inning.
- 1:13:52And they're still at it.
- 1:13:53Two out.
- 1:13:56A little looper hit out back the
- 1:13:58second race goes over.
- 1:14:01Down goes Peeley.
- 1:14:02And Robinson gets the ball.
- 1:14:04I think it hurts.
- 1:14:06Reese went charging over Jack
- 1:14:08went after the ball.
- 1:14:09The two of.
- 1:14:10The first right back to second
- 1:14:11base and they smacked.
- 1:14:13Robinson got the ball but.
- 1:14:14Reese.
- 1:14:15Had the wind knocked out of the
- 1:14:16bat.
- 1:14:17Printer one.
- 1:14:19Billy Southworth the Braves.
- 1:14:21A few more of them are running
- 1:14:22out there.
- 1:14:24Dodgers of course are all around
- 1:14:26there.
- 1:14:28Little captain.
- 1:14:30And he's got jobs.
- 1:14:31Boy that was a bang bang.
- 1:14:34He's going to like run into a
- 1:14:35brick wall.
- 1:14:36Peeley was not looking and he
- 1:14:38just kept going after the ball
- 1:14:40and Jack came on to both of them
- 1:14:42watching the point of it.
- 1:14:44And.
- 1:14:45Together.
- 1:14:46Now.
- 1:14:47He was up.
- 1:14:48Walking around.
- 1:14:53Everywhere.
- 1:14:54Folks are talking about the new
- 1:14:55cereal sensation called sugar
- 1:14:56crisp.
- 1:14:57Yes sir.
- 1:14:58And sugar crisp is really
- 1:14:59something to talk about.
- 1:15:01And entirely new cereal that's
- 1:15:02more than a cereal.
- 1:15:04As a cereal it's dandy for
- 1:15:05snacks it's handy or eat it like
- 1:15:07candy.
- 1:15:08Sugar crisp you see is wholesome
- 1:15:10puffed wheat with a delicious
- 1:15:11coating of sugar and honey.
- 1:15:14Now for your breakfast.
- 1:15:15Why you just pour milk or cream
- 1:15:17on top and.
- 1:15:18Skip the sugar.
- 1:15:19Eat.
- 1:15:20This.
- 1:15:21And you're going to enjoy sugar
- 1:15:23crisp between meals for a
- 1:15:24special snack.
- 1:15:25I'll take it along wherever you
- 1:15:26go.
- 1:15:27I just eat it out of the bag like
- 1:15:28candy.
- 1:15:30So it's better to keep the
- 1:15:31family.
- 1:15:32The post sugar crisp right away
- 1:15:33mom.
- 1:15:34How about this Saturday
- 1:15:35afternoon.
- 1:15:36I'll take it to the store.
- 1:15:37It's still open.
- 1:15:38Yes sir.
- 1:15:39By several bags.
- 1:15:40And then just watch him
- 1:15:41disappear.
- 1:15:42So look for sugar crisp.
- 1:15:43At your friend the grocers.
- 1:15:44In the big red white and blue
- 1:15:45cellophane bag.
- 1:15:46Well we got the last half of the
- 1:15:47fifth inning coming along.
- 1:15:48It's quite a collision.
- 1:15:49Don't.
- 1:15:50Want.
- 1:15:51To.
- 1:15:52Walk out of the door in the
- 1:15:53middle of the night.
- 1:15:54Wow.
- 1:15:55The peewees are.
- 1:15:56Doc Wendler motioned up to our
- 1:16:07booth here.
- 1:16:08He says that he got up around
- 1:16:09the windpipe knocked his wind
- 1:16:10out of.
- 1:16:11Edwards up there takes the first
- 1:16:12pitch over for a strike.
- 1:16:13To fourth is motioning down to
- 1:16:14the bullpen for us to get tuned
- 1:16:15up.
- 1:16:16Looks like.
- 1:16:17They're going to hit for.
- 1:16:18Mike.
- 1:16:19I need to run.
- 1:16:20Doc.
- 1:16:21I'm going to get.
- 1:16:22Nothing.
- 1:16:26Boston seven.
- 1:16:27Last half of the fifth inning
- 1:16:28Edwards up there trying to get
- 1:16:29them a start five to thirty one
- 1:16:30this is average.
- 1:16:31Swings and lines just one right.
- 1:16:32Third base.
- 1:16:53And bank has now is coming up
- 1:16:55the hit.
- 1:16:56Follow the motion from the
- 1:16:57bullpen.
- 1:16:58Mr.
- 1:16:59Erskine.
- 1:17:00He's got a little bit of a
- 1:17:02head walking up.
- 1:17:03No.
- 1:17:04He's going to love it.
- 1:17:05So Sam Laird is ready to go sit
- 1:17:06down and now they do.
- 1:17:10My kid was pretty good hitter.
- 1:17:12One for seven so far this year
- 1:17:14about one forty three.
- 1:17:15First day in Eversfield at a
- 1:17:16home run.
- 1:17:20Right hand batter.
- 1:17:21Swings on the first pitch.
- 1:17:23High foul back on the plate.
- 1:17:35And.
- 1:17:36We.
- 1:17:37I guess is going to take the
- 1:17:38rest of the afternoon off.
- 1:17:39Eddie McPherson over at the
- 1:17:40bat rack.
- 1:17:41Boy that was quite a bump.
- 1:17:45And.
- 1:17:46Still hasn't found his favorite
- 1:17:47stick yet.
- 1:17:48So.
- 1:17:49He's got a little bit of a
- 1:17:53head.
- 1:17:54Is.
- 1:17:55The.
- 1:17:56Afternoon.
- 1:17:57We got any further word while
- 1:17:58we're passing along to you about
- 1:17:59feeling.
- 1:18:00Wall.
- 1:18:01Of.
- 1:18:02A.
- 1:18:03Mixers.
- 1:18:06He's going to hit for each and
- 1:18:07unknowingly will take over
- 1:18:08shortstop.
- 1:18:11Yet he mixes one of the five
- 1:18:13leather men in the game.
- 1:18:16So.
- 1:18:17Boy you can't let a guy like
- 1:18:19this go.
- 1:18:20Takes the first pitch on the
- 1:18:22corner for a strike to off.
- 1:18:25Nobody on the Dodgers behind
- 1:18:27seven or nothing and Vernon
- 1:18:28Bickford who has beaten them
- 1:18:29three times since he came in the
- 1:18:30league.
- 1:18:31Got himself pretty good day.
- 1:18:33Curves fall out of us and high
- 1:18:34out the left field.
- 1:18:35Other it is Gordon waiting now
- 1:18:37looking up into this tough sky
- 1:18:39and takes it for the out.
- 1:18:40Well as a rainmaker.
- 1:18:44No three up three down.
- 1:18:46The Dodgers take the field now.
- 1:18:48The faces Boston attacked it has
- 1:18:50been rather rough this afternoon.
- 1:18:52What tomorrow.
- 1:18:54The seven runs so far.
- 1:18:58Already do.
- 1:18:59Serve up.
- 1:19:00The all redhead again with our
- 1:19:02post serial scoreboard and it's
- 1:19:04funny on it.
- 1:19:06The end of six innings the fill
- 1:19:08is.
- 1:19:09Leading six to one over the
- 1:19:11Giants system and it's his home
- 1:19:13run.
- 1:19:14And the three innings the
- 1:19:15Dodgers have had to do one.
- 1:19:17Since Saturday St. Louis tonight
- 1:19:19the American League the
- 1:19:20athletics failed to score their
- 1:19:21first to battle with the stadium
- 1:19:23the Yankees are now hitting why
- 1:19:25are you pitching for the A's
- 1:19:26against the Rashi of New York.
- 1:19:29This has been a very significant
- 1:19:31afternoon at the stadium.
- 1:19:32Well this has been the ball game
- 1:19:34in honor of Ed Farrar and the
- 1:19:37Yankees you know won all those
- 1:19:39pennants.
- 1:19:40While Barrow was the fellow
- 1:19:41putting them together.
- 1:19:42And.
- 1:19:44So a player from each of the
- 1:19:45former Yankee pundits winning
- 1:19:47teams under Ed Barrow was there
- 1:19:49today and a player from each of
- 1:19:51the National League teams that
- 1:19:52opposed the Yankee teams in the
- 1:19:53World Series was also there.
- 1:19:55So there's a great deal of
- 1:19:56sentiment there.
- 1:19:57And I don't know of a finer
- 1:19:59tribute to be paid to a more
- 1:20:01deserving person than the
- 1:20:02tribute to have a day in honor
- 1:20:04of Ed Farrar at Yankee Stadium
- 1:20:06be more than any other
- 1:20:07individual built it.
- 1:20:09And five and a half innings the
- 1:20:11Red Sox lead Washington.
- 1:20:13Two to nothing.
- 1:20:14And at the end of four and a
- 1:20:15half innings the White Sox are
- 1:20:16the Indians two to one.
- 1:20:17What's the score here Connie?
- 1:20:19Seven to nothing.
- 1:20:21As unnatural as far as the
- 1:20:22Brooklyn fans are concerned.
- 1:20:24What's the score here Connie?
- 1:20:26Seven to nothing.
- 1:20:28As unnatural as far as the
- 1:20:30Brooklyn fans are concerned.
- 1:20:32The Braves out on top.
- 1:20:34Buddy Kerr leading off against
- 1:20:35the back head here takes the
- 1:20:36first pitch high outside the
- 1:20:37ball one.
- 1:20:43Outfield pretty much straight
- 1:20:44away.
- 1:20:45In field normal.
- 1:20:46Nexus down at third and Cox
- 1:20:48moves over to shortstop.
- 1:20:49Kerr swings a miss.
- 1:20:51Oh a strike one.
- 1:20:54So Eddie's a handy man to have
- 1:20:55around on your bench.
- 1:20:56Reese in the collision with
- 1:20:57Robinson had to take the rest of
- 1:20:59the afternoon off.
- 1:21:02Banged his wing pipe.
- 1:21:05The one one pitch Kerr
- 1:21:07punched out on the third
- 1:21:08baseline.
- 1:21:09Mixers grabbed it close to first
- 1:21:11hit.
- 1:21:16I'll tell you that Mixers can
- 1:21:17handle it.
- 1:21:18Sleuthers.
- 1:21:22All of a lot of ballclubs like
- 1:21:23to have him around on their
- 1:21:24bench.
- 1:21:25Not only on their bench and
- 1:21:27quiz.
- 1:21:31The Braves run Big Bird.
- 1:21:36He said out the Dodgers for five
- 1:21:41innings.
- 1:21:44Mates have gone off and got
- 1:21:45seven runs off half the bank
- 1:21:47head.
- 1:21:48Fastball is high inside ball one.
- 1:21:52Big Bird has a hitter is one for
- 1:21:5413 average of 0 7 7.
- 1:22:00He's got a little bit of a
- 1:22:01split big hole in left center.
- 1:22:03Big Bird takes under the hand
- 1:22:05ball to Schumer is playing a
- 1:22:10normal straightaway left field
- 1:22:12but Snider's played it over a
- 1:22:13bit towards right center.
- 1:22:15There's a big area out there
- 1:22:16between the center guard and the
- 1:22:17left fielder.
- 1:22:19Now the two nothing pitch and
- 1:22:20this one is inside.
- 1:22:23All three.
- 1:22:25We're going to play around on
- 1:22:26the right side of the bank.
- 1:22:31Get in relief of Joe.
- 1:22:40That right deliver the three
- 1:22:41nothing push down she comes to
- 1:22:42high.
- 1:22:44Those are the first base.
- 1:22:47First walk of an up by.
- 1:22:51Struck out one.
- 1:22:55And then the ball to just go.
- 1:22:56Now coming up to hit left
- 1:22:58handed against this right
- 1:23:00hander.
- 1:23:02Then targets and walk Elliott
- 1:23:04single.
- 1:23:08Under bank head.
- 1:23:09Stuck out the first man.
- 1:23:11Big Lumberman said Gordon and
- 1:23:13then Marshall packed in for a
- 1:23:14triple.
- 1:23:17The inning was all over and
- 1:23:18smoke died down and four runs
- 1:23:20in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:23:21Just throw up there.
- 1:23:23And then just a high five all
- 1:23:25deep back in the left center
- 1:23:26field.
- 1:23:27So they started racing way way
- 1:23:28back.
- 1:23:29And it is.
- 1:23:39For a minute and we're going to
- 1:23:40have another one of those.
- 1:23:43There are both converging on
- 1:23:45that baseball was it deep back
- 1:23:47in the left center field and
- 1:23:48that gave the crowd here that
- 1:23:50field.
- 1:23:54Earl Torgerson.
- 1:23:56First baseman is up now batting
- 1:23:58at two ninety five twenty three
- 1:24:00base hits.
- 1:24:03Burned back for it on it first
- 1:24:04base to off top half of the six
- 1:24:06seven and nothing.
- 1:24:07Favor the Braves first of a
- 1:24:08three game series.
- 1:24:13I feel playing big target to
- 1:24:15pull the ball towards right
- 1:24:18curveball don't overhand low
- 1:24:19from all one.
- 1:24:29Torgerson is one for two
- 1:24:30officially this afternoon.
- 1:24:32Granted a second single and
- 1:24:34walk.
- 1:24:36Bickford on our first.
- 1:24:40Which is on the corner for
- 1:24:41strike.
- 1:24:43Thank you.
- 1:24:44Outside corner.
- 1:24:46The other side of the field
- 1:24:49field is not on the back.
- 1:24:52Pulling it against the
- 1:24:53Bickford back in his fielding
- 1:24:55depth with a left hand hitter
- 1:24:57up there.
- 1:24:58Pull that ball.
- 1:24:59And his second.
- 1:25:02And out the last second
- 1:25:03Torgerson gets something in his
- 1:25:04heart steps up.
- 1:25:07All one strike one.
- 1:25:11Guy really takes a toll.
- 1:25:14He keeps it down very slowly
- 1:25:16comes in with a high pitch
- 1:25:17outside.
- 1:25:19Pull the string on it.
- 1:25:20Couldn't get it through and
- 1:25:21ball to strike one.
- 1:25:22Billy Southworth coaching down
- 1:25:24the third.
- 1:25:26Donnie Cooney who finished up
- 1:25:28managing the ballclub last year
- 1:25:30is at first base.
- 1:25:35Back and ready to serve to one
- 1:25:36to Torgerson does and it's over
- 1:25:38for call for two.
- 1:25:41Here is the official attendance
- 1:25:43of the Bickford team.
- 1:25:45Nineteen thousand four
- 1:25:47hundred and eighty eight one
- 1:25:49nine four eight eight.
- 1:25:52Top of the six to out the count
- 1:25:53to two on Torgerson.
- 1:25:57Bickford leads away from
- 1:25:58first base back in.
- 1:26:01Pitches in there and it's over
- 1:26:03for call strike two.
- 1:26:04Well this is a little
- 1:26:05terrible.
- 1:26:06It's not true there.
- 1:26:07And this is Torgerson caught
- 1:26:08with his bat on his shoulder.
- 1:26:09So it is no runs.
- 1:26:12Bickford left on the grid
- 1:26:14walking one away and they left
- 1:26:15the first base.
- 1:26:17Now once again here's Red Barber.
- 1:26:19I bet the folks all over the
- 1:26:20country listening to this
- 1:26:21post-serial broadcast.
- 1:26:22One in a while we're going to
- 1:26:24talk about post-toasters.
- 1:26:25Well now is a good time.
- 1:26:27Never a better time.
- 1:26:29Post-toasters.
- 1:26:30Boy I'm telling you that's a big
- 1:26:32hit in the Breakfast League and
- 1:26:34that's the reliable hit.
- 1:26:36Post-toasters.
- 1:26:37A long record of just making
- 1:26:39happy appetites happy.
- 1:26:41The friends you've tried
- 1:26:42post-toasters and judge for
- 1:26:43yourself and see if they are
- 1:26:45better than any other cornflakes
- 1:26:46you ever ate.
- 1:26:47You'll find there's a world of
- 1:26:48difference in cornflakes and
- 1:26:50it's post-toasting that makes
- 1:26:52the difference.
- 1:26:53Yes ma'am you'll notice a
- 1:26:55delicious grand tasting
- 1:26:56difference in every spoonful of
- 1:26:58post-toasters.
- 1:26:59They're extra good extra tasty
- 1:27:01and extra fresh.
- 1:27:02So next time it's a ghosted
- 1:27:04don't you say cornflakes.
- 1:27:06You just ask the man for
- 1:27:07post-toasters yeah.
- 1:27:08The better cornflakes.
- 1:27:10Another famous post-serial
- 1:27:11guaranteed threat.
- 1:27:14George Schuba leading off and
- 1:27:15he can't get away from the
- 1:27:16curve ball.
- 1:27:17He hits him right on his number
- 1:27:19eight.
- 1:27:20And after the junior ball.
- 1:27:22And he's on the first base the
- 1:27:23hard way.
- 1:27:25Schuba hit by a pitch.
- 1:27:28Bickford broke off a great big
- 1:27:29rainbow.
- 1:27:32Almost broke Schuba off too.
- 1:27:37Well Snyder is up.
- 1:27:38Seven and nothing score.
- 1:27:43The Dodgers have not scored in
- 1:27:44the last 19 innings shut out by
- 1:27:46Raffensperger and didn't score
- 1:27:47in the last five innings at
- 1:27:49Pittsburgh.
- 1:27:51Pitch is over to Snyder for a
- 1:27:52strike.
- 1:27:54Oh that's a long time.
- 1:27:57They are running ground.
- 1:27:5919 innings.

- 1:28:10Goes to first and they get one.
- 1:28:12The ball was not hit too
- 1:28:13sharply.
- 1:28:14So they made sure of the front
- 1:28:16man.
- 1:28:17Cardinal rule in baseball.
- 1:28:18Snyder hitting into a forced
- 1:28:19play.
- 1:28:20Sissy the second baseman to
- 1:28:21buddy curve the shortstop.
- 1:28:23So Schuba is erased at the
- 1:28:24middle stop.
- 1:28:25And it brings up Jackie
- 1:28:27Robinson.
- 1:28:28Jack batting at three twenty
- 1:28:30three.
- 1:28:31Walked in the first inning
- 1:28:32grounded the second base in the
- 1:28:34fourth inning.
- 1:28:35And he'll set up a double play
- 1:28:37position.
- 1:28:38Now the runner on the first base
- 1:28:39and one out Snyder leading away
- 1:28:41towards the hole in the back

- 1:28:45the Robinson ball right down
- 1:28:47below us and red made a big
- 1:28:53souvenir home to the driver.

- 1:29:01having a tea party here.
- 1:29:03Last time with a six seven

- 1:29:10Her wife one hand pick up
- 1:29:12touches like a double play and
- 1:29:14there's a three man collision
- 1:29:16out in second base.
- 1:29:17Sissy and her and then just to
- 1:29:20say hello to Duke.
- 1:29:22And dug up some of our
- 1:29:23ever feel real estate.
- 1:29:25They all went down.
- 1:29:27Quite a day we're having around
- 1:29:28here.

- 1:31:20Negro in the history of the major
- 1:31:22leagues to pitch pitch to at
- 1:31:24Brooklyn if you recall.
- 1:31:28And went down to Montreal back

- 1:31:39Detroit for remains to be seen.
- 1:31:41At any rate he's keeping ready.
- 1:31:44Although as far as the Dodgers
- 1:31:45are concerned bigs have been too
- 1:31:46rough.
- 1:31:49I feel around to a left on Bob
- 1:31:51who pulls the ball.
- 1:31:53It's a hard up that way.
- 1:31:55Fastball is very high.
- 1:31:57It's just a reach up.
- 1:31:59And mid on it.
- 1:32:00Pull it down.
- 1:32:01Good one.
- 1:32:02The strong wind which is not
- 1:32:04let up.
- 1:32:05This is going in the dust.
- 1:32:06It's just constant blows from
- 1:32:08right field into the left field
- 1:32:10corner off the first base to
- 1:32:12third base.
- 1:32:15Thank you.
- 1:32:16Two and one.
- 1:32:24The Braves are running the first
- 1:32:25inning two runs in the third and
- 1:32:27four in the fifth.
- 1:32:30The first run was a gift from
- 1:32:31Tuck Scott.
- 1:32:33The next six have been blasted.
- 1:32:37The Braves had anybody hit in the
- 1:32:38single it sort of puny.
- 1:32:43Thank you.
- 1:32:44The Braves do a curse.
- 1:32:53I just have to go around this
- 1:32:54first game of the long home
- 1:32:56stand.
- 1:33:00Great to tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:33:02A lot of Collins a business
- 1:33:04manager.
- 1:33:05I just sit and wait to go.
- 1:33:07Serial box.
- 1:33:08There are 12,000 seats all
- 1:33:10the time.
- 1:33:15One out and said Gordon got a
- 1:33:16big home run earlier.
- 1:33:17Takes a fastball high inside
- 1:33:18ball.
- 1:33:20Sydney walked in the first
- 1:33:21inning and banged the two run
- 1:33:23home run.
- 1:33:27That was the sugar crisp.
- 1:33:28I did the third.
- 1:33:34The Braves are running the
- 1:33:40second inning two.
- 1:33:44The bank had delivered.
- 1:33:47You talk about some moves.
- 1:33:49Remember you have to see this
- 1:33:50bank.
- 1:33:52He pitches it all he does.
- 1:33:53Hasn't got a ball in his body.
- 1:34:00And Jackson down to an all
- 1:34:01the ball three.
- 1:34:06Eddie the pan who is one of the
- 1:34:07old settlers among the Reuters
- 1:34:09here in Good Fork.
- 1:34:14Down there hollering at Desmond.
- 1:34:19You know the catch fastball
- 1:34:20high inside.
- 1:34:29You folks out around the country
- 1:34:30anytime you come in this make
- 1:34:31of the word.
- 1:34:32You're in the second look up
- 1:34:33and see if the dog is the home
- 1:34:35where he just haven't been to
- 1:34:36New York to call if you haven't
- 1:34:38got to that field.
- 1:34:40You haven't seen a ball game
- 1:34:41in Brooklyn.
- 1:34:42You just haven't seen one.
- 1:34:45You're not the only one like
- 1:34:46the 10.
- 1:34:48You know you're in a place that
- 1:34:49is jumping.
- 1:34:51Never as all day.
- 1:34:54It's going to happen.
- 1:34:55It'll happen here.
- 1:34:58All right.
- 1:35:01It's tripled.
- 1:35:02Not to end.
- 1:35:03I'll thank you.
- 1:35:04You would call it.
- 1:35:05That's that.
- 1:35:06Well, let's get a swing.
- 1:35:08I've already got the right to
- 1:35:09go at the base of the scoreboard.
- 1:35:13Makes the catch.
- 1:35:14Go to the second base.
- 1:35:16The wind held out just enough
- 1:35:19to make it.
- 1:35:21The wind today.
- 1:35:22That ball would have been
- 1:35:23a good one.
- 1:35:28The dimensions down the right
- 1:35:29field wall to 97 right down
- 1:35:31the right field line.
- 1:35:33It is three ninety five in the
- 1:35:34right center field corner.
- 1:35:36It is three ninety three in the
- 1:35:38left center field corner.
- 1:35:39It is three fifty one in back of
- 1:35:41left field and then the straight
- 1:35:42down the left field power line.
- 1:35:44It's three forty eight double
- 1:35:46back stands all the way around
- 1:35:48except for directly behind
- 1:35:49right field.
- 1:35:50That's where the famous ball
- 1:35:51goes.
- 1:35:56Swings and misses.
- 1:35:57He has to hit the three at that
- 1:36:00is where he batted in the run.
- 1:36:03And then that seven.
- 1:36:08Big guys being in the end.
- 1:36:10I feel around.
- 1:36:11Good left.
- 1:36:12They will sit Gordon Cooper
- 1:36:13swing the ball over the
- 1:36:15wall.
- 1:36:27It's a big double ball.
- 1:36:28Good one.
- 1:36:29It's banged it off the left
- 1:36:30field wall three hundred forty
- 1:36:31eight feet away.
- 1:36:32It was a great story.
- 1:36:33Bangs in to makes it now.
- 1:36:40Eight to nothing in favor of
- 1:36:42Boston.
- 1:36:44The first six rounds charged
- 1:36:46as part of Joe.
- 1:36:48The next really good bank
- 1:36:50head to end on the football
- 1:36:53group.
- 1:36:54So fast that one.
- 1:36:58And I think he likes to play
- 1:36:59for South.
- 1:37:03And that second day.
- 1:37:04But he's getting back again.
- 1:37:07There is a system.
- 1:37:17Fielding field.
- 1:37:18Right hand here.
- 1:37:19Pretty good.
- 1:37:28Maybe the shot wants to come to
- 1:37:30work in a new show today.
- 1:37:32We'll see.
- 1:37:34I know that and now they
- 1:37:37continue to try and let you
- 1:37:38talk to the great.
- 1:37:42What's on top.
- 1:37:43Hey, all.
- 1:37:45Looking for their first win
- 1:37:46over the year.
- 1:37:47Brooklyn suffered two games
- 1:37:48series at Boston earlier.
- 1:37:51One oh pitch.
- 1:37:52The ball to.
- 1:38:07Johnny Cooney.
- 1:38:10Sounds like that has my most
- 1:38:12complete admiration.
- 1:38:17So.
- 1:38:22Had to beat himself.
- 1:38:25Twice.
- 1:38:29You know the hardest thing in
- 1:38:30the world is for a man to beat
- 1:38:31himself.
- 1:38:33He went out of the major
- 1:38:34leagues.
- 1:38:35One time, you know, he was
- 1:38:36the manager of the cardinals.
- 1:38:37But all the way down to the
- 1:38:38bottom never start up again.
- 1:38:39Last evil.
- 1:38:43Just won his own fight.
- 1:38:44Came back to be manager of
- 1:38:45the cardinals again and won
- 1:38:46the first time.
- 1:38:47He was in the first place
- 1:38:48championship on the ball.
- 1:38:50Pitch inside.
- 1:38:52And if it was one thing on the
- 1:38:54face of the earth, the South
- 1:38:55was loved.
- 1:38:56Love that son of his.
- 1:38:58And he was a great boy.
- 1:38:59He was worth that devotion.
- 1:39:01And he had a fine wall record.
- 1:39:04And then you would fall.
- 1:39:05What awful one way landing
- 1:39:07the body field his body wasn't
- 1:39:09found for months and saw
- 1:39:11the ball.
- 1:39:16Three one pitch now to 60.
- 1:39:17Low.
- 1:39:22He's a boy based on the
- 1:39:23world.
- 1:39:24That's three walks given up by
- 1:39:25a bank head.
- 1:39:26Should you say it looks
- 1:39:27slightly less than brilliant
- 1:39:28and you believe the son.
- 1:39:31Of course, the testing points
- 1:39:32can you throw the ball at all
- 1:39:33at pulling that muscle.
- 1:39:36I'll let Desmond spell it.
- 1:39:37But you tell me the muscle
- 1:39:38you pulled at Chicago was the
- 1:39:40super spy.
- 1:39:47Don't want run in.
- 1:39:52Eight nothing.
- 1:39:53You are hit.
- 1:39:58But a car has one hit for us.
- 1:40:00We have that.
- 1:40:02One eighty one.
- 1:40:05I feel slightly in the left.
- 1:40:09Thank you.
- 1:40:10It stops.
- 1:40:11You.
- 1:40:12Thank you.
- 1:40:41I just over the mouth walking through the back head
- 1:40:46But you're very big foot
- 1:40:48Well, I want to game this year sort of edging into the catbird seat. I'll thank them June
- 1:40:54He's had it himself and his teammates have gotten in nine runs
- 1:41:01For the Christmas time on the 13th of May
- 1:41:03I said working for the third out men at first and third
- 1:41:08This is my
- 1:41:09Make the list to get back out of the way
- 1:41:16This is a can run leaving Donald third and foul ground when the men who hit the batted ball
- 1:41:21He would not be automatically out
- 1:41:24For our first second base open after you're back in the right
- 1:41:27Make the take time side for ball to
- 1:41:30Make it behind now to and all
- 1:41:37Seven fans come up here in the seventh inning
- 1:41:43Waves out in front nine to nothing
- 1:41:48Six runs out happening three up make it
- 1:41:51That's all over for false front
- 1:41:53Preacher role is going down to the Brooklyn bullpen. I guess to carry some instructions. He's not taking a glove with him
- 1:42:02Going down there's talking to newton
- 1:42:06You can ask him both growing
- 1:42:11Pitch over for striking
- 1:42:16Well still talking with you
- 1:42:18He ran down into the party you got orders
- 1:42:24We got to get a station break here
- 1:42:30Long up a half of the seventh inning, but if you think it's long, what do you how long you think back yet?
- 1:42:38To two pitch
- 1:42:40To two pitch
- 1:43:10I
- 1:43:19Got a little riddle here
- 1:43:24How quick is quick
- 1:43:28Knocking off his first ball of sugar
- 1:43:31Give that man a case
- 1:43:33Sugar crisp yes friends. It's a fact you'll sail right through that first ball of sugar crisp
- 1:43:40Once you discover how doggone good it is now this exciting new co-serial is fun to eat
- 1:43:46It's wholesome top wheat with a delicious sugar and honey coating
- 1:43:50Just pour on the milk or cream skip the sugar and get set for the happiest new breakfast creed in years and years
- 1:44:04Yes, sugar crisp
- 1:44:06Pomp and roll first step last to the center takes a pitch in for a ball strike
- 1:44:10Right hander for the way it pitches the car hits it from foul up by third base first to start a value it's getting over close. He's got it
- 1:44:21One up and one to the center
- 1:44:25That was about as quick as you could say
- 1:44:28Sugar crisp again
- 1:44:31Go on Bickford has been quite efficient
- 1:44:34Find an executioner out here
- 1:44:36Very good
- 1:44:40You know how to do that book with one head which is sort of a scrubber very much as bill will be in the background the first
- 1:44:46Could have been screwed another very easily
- 1:44:48The other
- 1:44:52But the official floor like young guys got to call it now and the other so that's the only hit so far
- 1:44:58In fact that's why you have an official store to rule out something that is adaptive status
- 1:45:05Newcom continues throwing us in the stop down the book and both
- 1:45:09And another one of the most important
- 1:45:12Big the deals
- 1:45:14This is the change of the fastball ball
- 1:45:16What a ball strike
- 1:45:20And a big DC six bring it away
- 1:45:22No way
- 1:45:28It's
- 1:45:36DC six is that the one that the garbage in from Cincinnati
- 1:45:40That's in Harry Clark of American Island up there and it was a great flight
- 1:45:44And then 17 and a half thousand
- 1:45:48Has eaten half on the whole
- 1:45:55To now last the seventh and Billy Cox
- 1:45:59Picks a change up for a fourth ball strike
- 1:46:02Big good start everything working out beautiful beautiful
- 1:46:05Beautiful but good with one out walk three men in the first inning the pennies broke out for a long time to take a third
- 1:46:14Strike and got hard is on the ground book
- 1:46:16Otherwise we had an effect
- 1:46:18talk such a
- 1:46:20Good hit
- 1:46:27And it happened to take the
- 1:46:29Sting away from that little
- 1:46:31In the fourth inning
- 1:46:33Naturally you got along with
- 1:46:35People are going to say well be a shame if the guys
- 1:46:37Really want to
- 1:46:39If you just want to
- 1:46:41But that's the matter is now settled
- 1:46:43That's a clean single for Fox
- 1:46:45Number two off the food
- 1:46:47I don't think over the way is the battle is
- 1:46:50You said
- 1:46:52After I'm good last
- 1:46:54First
- 1:46:56Would take a fastball
- 1:46:58All
- 1:47:00He's asking
- 1:47:02Apparently to hit for back
- 1:47:04Head if Edwards can save him a life
- 1:47:06And you can as the only picture working in the book
- 1:47:08And both hands
- 1:47:10For adding up you're going down to talk to new
- 1:47:13Come this now except for first
- 1:47:15Him stopping his work
- 1:47:17And you can continue
- 1:47:19You feel it manage a shot would like to see
- 1:47:21You can get an ending of so
- 1:47:23Today
- 1:47:32Almost right
- 1:47:34The plate right hand batter
- 1:47:36Strange
- 1:47:40Just had had word from the clubhouse
- 1:47:43And from
- 1:47:45One of the trainer
- 1:47:47The three we raised in his
- 1:47:49Colleges of Jackie Robinson
- 1:47:51Banged his windpipe
- 1:47:53No abrasion
- 1:47:55And nothing serious
- 1:47:57All
- 1:47:59That is in the word to
- 1:48:01Take a step
- 1:48:03On the
- 1:48:05On the
- 1:48:07On the
- 1:48:09On the
- 1:48:11On the
- 1:48:13Of
- 1:48:15The
- 1:48:21For
- 1:48:33And
- 1:48:37And
- 1:48:39Now, getting the sunshine.
- 1:48:42Two on pitch, swung on, followed up.
- 1:48:45Of course, you know that's brand new.
- 1:48:47A lot of grand person.
- 1:48:53Mr. Smith, of course, is known,

- 1:52:52Coming on the hip for the third baseman, Mixers.
- 1:52:56Here we come, and there's the announcer.
- 1:53:07Jorgensen is also one. He's been almost forgotten mad on the ball, so to speak.
- 1:53:12There's John Morgan coming up, and Willie Cox around.
- 1:53:16He's never lost his ability to smile while he's been branding up these tough days.
- 1:53:23That's it, round to the right, two out, three on.
- 1:53:26Pitches low inside, ball one for the spider.
- 1:53:32I don't think he weighs 140 pounds, but he has great timing.
- 1:53:37Open stance, left hand hitter, Cox on third, Edward on second, and that's Jorgensen first.
- 1:53:48Chipp on the left hander gets up, and Annanelli gets out of there.
- 1:53:52Annanelli is clearly just throwing, shooting south.
- 1:53:55Bobby holds the right hander and Chipp on the left hander, both working in the bullpen for the wave.
- 1:53:59And the event that Bickford has lost his touch.
- 1:54:02Rogers trying to penalize him, Boston ahead, nine to nothing.
- 1:54:07The two men out, a single by Cox, and then Bickford adding to his own troubles.
- 1:54:14It walks to Ed Woodson, pinch hitter, Hermanski.
- 1:54:18Now she's down.
- 1:54:21The one on one pitch.
- 1:54:23Cox, that's two.
- 1:54:25The ball is put back and kicks on the decision to get.
- 1:54:32Yes, answers him back in time.
- 1:54:37Annanelli gets in.
- 1:54:40Catcher Cooper down, and he's pout.
- 1:54:43Harry gets working into the crack between the catcher and the left hander.
- 1:54:46He's off to catch his right shoulder.
- 1:54:49Bickford deals a high outside third.
- 1:54:52The ball's two strikes.
- 1:54:54Two-two.
- 1:54:59The drivers trying to do something about this nine to nothing deficit.
- 1:55:03The waves have slapped on him.
- 1:55:05This is the last of his seven-pinning two-out three-on.
- 1:55:09Two-two pitch.
- 1:55:10High outside for guy three.
- 1:55:12That's all.
- 1:55:13Couch all the way.
- 1:55:15Not a matter of playing here.
- 1:55:17Three-two and two men ball.
- 1:55:29Jorgensen.
- 1:55:31The shoulder's at stick now on his left shoulder.
- 1:55:35Now starts to pump it.
- 1:55:38Backs out of there.
- 1:55:40Bickford is taking a little time for him.
- 1:55:42Cape Cod, 19,488.
- 1:55:47They're hooping and hollering here at Brooklyn.
- 1:55:50Boy, this ballpark is always alive.
- 1:55:54One to go, the three-two pitch.
- 1:55:56Ball four, take the one-fourth game.
- 1:55:58Number one, the base of the main goal.
- 1:56:15Billy Southwaite runs after the mound.
- 1:56:17The first time he's gone out there today.
- 1:56:21He is staying with Bickford, leading him in.
- 1:56:24So Bickford runs his shot out and he's hoops for collecting a case of sugarcress for such a feat.
- 1:56:30He's walked three straight men following a single for a run of hoes.
- 1:56:41That is George Scuba.
- 1:56:43It's a nine-to-one ball game, and the first run the guys have scored now in 20 innings.
- 1:56:49They were forced upon.
- 1:56:51I feel quite right on Scuba, left-hand hitter.
- 1:56:54Swings at the ground ball to the right side.
- 1:56:56Sistine has a good lead coming.
- 1:56:58The canela on all hands is safe and a good run in.
- 1:57:00The canela is short.
- 1:57:02The bases are main loaded and run number two is in.
- 1:57:12Well, that was the break the Dodgers were looking for as they strive to have a big inning now.
- 1:57:18A boost by Sistine with a ground ball hit right at him.
- 1:57:20The bases are main loaded.
- 1:57:22It is a nine-to-two ball game.
- 1:57:24And the matter is, Duke Smarter takes a fastball high outside.
- 1:57:28Ball one.
- 1:57:30Only the first run can be earned.
- 1:57:32No additional runs can be earned if the Dodgers get any more.
- 1:57:35The second run is not earned.
- 1:57:42Stader-Barg gets inspecting the ball.
- 1:57:46The bases remain up all day for the Brooklands.
- 1:57:49The Braves nine and the Dodgers two.
- 1:57:52A single with two outs, three bases on balls, another at second base.
- 1:57:57We had two runs in, three on.
- 1:57:59What's the matter up there, I want to know.
- 1:58:04Swings and busts of all out, in, through, right field.
- 1:58:06A line drive right at the little ball.
- 1:58:08He grabs it from the outside.
- 1:58:10There.
- 1:58:12But ends up.
- 1:58:14Two runs.
- 1:58:16One hit.
- 1:58:18And a free throw.
- 1:58:20End of seven innings.
- 1:58:22Nine runs.
- 1:58:23They're all earned on ten hits.
- 1:58:26And one arrow for the Braves.
- 1:58:27Two runs.
- 1:58:28The first one earned.
- 1:58:29Two hits.
- 1:58:32And for Brooklyn, no arrows.
- 1:58:37It is post cereals sending it all to you from here in Brooklyn.
- 1:58:42You know the famous post cereals.
- 1:58:45Post toasters.
- 1:58:46Post grape nuts.
- 1:58:47Post raisin bran.
- 1:58:4940% bran flakes.
- 1:58:51Post pins.
- 1:58:53And the nearest is post sugar crisps.
- 1:58:58Jorgensen who hits the mixers at third, goes to third.
- 1:59:01Don Newcomb comes on to be the pitcher.
- 1:59:03And the pitcher at the top of the order, Jeff Rowe, as he moves to the eighth inning.
- 1:59:07Newcomb, big right-hander.
- 1:59:09Been home with an ailing arm.
- 1:59:11Managed to shot and send him home from Chicago.
- 1:59:13When he found he couldn't pitch, he said, OK, go home and get a complete rest.
- 1:59:16Can't rest around the ball time.
- 1:59:18Newcomb's on the mound.
- 1:59:21The Phillies knock off the Giants, seven to one.
- 1:59:23It's a nightmare hole in first place in the National League.
- 1:59:27It's a 2-2 tie between the Pirates and the Cubs at the end of sixth.

- 1:59:43And the Red Sox are now batting the eighth inning, 4-4 tie.
- 1:59:50Strawberry, Cleveland.
- 1:59:52White Sox, two.
- 1:59:53And the Cleveland Indians, one.
- 1:59:54Cleveland bat in the seventh inning.
- 2:00:02Newcomb's got a couple more pitches to throw.
- 2:00:04So what do you say that we pause briefly for station identification?
- 2:00:31Sam Jethro, who burned up the woods with Montreal in the National League last year.
- 2:00:39Switch hitter batting up handed.
- 2:00:43Sam, of course, is the first Negro player in the history of the Braves.
- 2:00:48Boy, he's been some ball player for them.
- 2:00:50Most hits in the league, 33.
- 2:00:52Five of them, home runs.
- 2:00:55Swings at the high, high ball.
- 2:00:57Three separate catchers coming back, he's under.
- 2:01:01He's got it.
- 2:01:0310-4, batting out.
- 2:01:06One's on, getting to the eighth.
- 2:01:09Brook and Infield is now Hodges at first base, Robinson at second.
- 2:01:15The LeCox is playing short and the third baseman is Johnny Jargison.
- 2:01:18First time Johnny has been able to wear a glove this year in a game.
- 2:01:25Earl Targison, one hit to three at bats.
- 2:01:28Swings and hits a ground ball slowly towards second.
- 2:01:31Robinson's up, close to first.
- 2:01:33Fist in time and Targison is out.
- 2:01:36The fish on College Water giving it the thumb.
- 2:02:01Now, Barbelliott.
- 2:02:07The third baseman has two lines, single, that are four times up.
- 2:02:11They've had the Newcomb kick throws, fastball inside.
- 2:02:15Newcomb is spassed.
- 2:02:17If he's ready to pitch again, some of the Brooklyn pitching problems may be solved.
- 2:02:21Boy, you don't go very far when you ace.
- 2:02:24Not even with you, back home resting is off.
- 2:02:28The Braves are tomorrow, 12,000 seats, all prices.
- 2:02:33Throw, put on a ground ball down to third.
- 2:02:36Jargison up with it.
- 2:02:37Fires over to first base.
- 2:02:39In time, a hit to five and Newcomb puts the start down one, two, three.
- 2:02:44It's in itself as encouraged.
- 2:02:49Nine to two, over the Braves.
- 2:02:51Trying out Brooklyn pitches.

- 2:04:17The short step throw is in time, and Robbie is back last.
- 2:04:20One up, one away.
- 2:04:23Last to the eighth.
- 2:04:26Carl Ferrello was involved in a very pivotal turn of the game.
- 2:04:31But in the first inning, with the Bears leading 1-0, Bickford was 1-0.
- 2:04:36Walked three straight yards.
- 2:04:38Then he induced Ferrello to look at a third strike.
- 2:04:45Carl swings at a high foul ball.
- 2:04:48Bears catch a walker kicker coming back.
- 2:04:50Get it under.
- 2:04:51And takes it.
- 2:04:52Leaks up to these three for out number two.
- 2:04:55Who are gone?
- 2:04:56Nice to be eighth.
- 2:04:58Hodges, who has one hit, an infield scratch single.
- 2:05:03Hodges had only two hits.
- 2:05:08Hodges batting 3-11.
- 2:05:15Then he continues going out toward left.
- 2:05:18Fine crowd.
- 2:05:19That's the sunshine here at Epics Field.
- 2:05:22Fair ball both.
- 2:05:23False strike.
- 2:05:28Willie Lowes, Washington, Queens.
- 2:05:31Back here on Long Island warming up for the Dodgers.
- 2:05:35Pedal ball in under the chin.
- 2:05:37Lowes is a bonus player.
- 2:05:39This could be the book of this year.
- 2:05:40Most of the Dodgers that wish to take their chances are losing in the waivers.
- 2:05:49One pitch, one long foul back.
- 2:05:53One and two.
- 2:05:57Newcomb pitched a very good inning.
- 2:06:01He sure managed to shot in something.
- 2:06:03Needed just a little work, a little tuning up.
- 2:06:09One and two pitch.
- 2:06:10Curves one on and tap foul outside the first base.
- 2:06:14Tomorrow's game on Sunday is two o'clock.
- 2:06:18For those of you out and around the country listening in on our Coast to Coast broadcast,

- 2:06:25there is a New York State Sunday Law that no athletic event,
- 2:06:30any athletic event, cannot start before two o'clock on Sunday afternoon.
- 2:06:37One and two pitch.
- 2:06:38Curves one on and hit high out of the short right center field.
- 2:06:41Second base and assist her back.
- 2:06:42And he's got it.
- 2:06:45The Dodgers go down routinely and out for the Vaseline.
- 2:06:48One, two, three, last three, eight.
- 2:06:51And Bickford regained his mastery.
- 2:06:53At the end of eight, it is nine to two in favor of the Braves.
- 2:07:01In the American League at the end of three innings, it's the Yankees five and the Athletics nothing.
- 2:07:07The Yankees, Bauer and Brown at the home runs.
- 2:07:10The A's, Wise, Scheib, and Fowler.
- 2:07:15Newcomb going out to the mound to pitch the ninth inning.
- 2:07:19At the end of eight innings, the Boston Red Sox are leading Washington five to one.
- 2:07:25And Dobson is pitching in the ninth inning trying to get Washington out of there
- 2:07:28and save the one-run lead.
- 2:07:30She's had her teeth on all the way for Washington.
- 2:07:32Stobb started with Boston, Masterson in the seventh,
- 2:07:35when Washington got four runs to tie it, and Dobson's come on in ninth.
- 2:07:40Ted Williams and Walt Dropo hit home runs for the Red Sox.
- 2:07:44At the end of seven innings, it's a 2-2 tie between the Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Indians.
- 2:07:49Kane pitching to Chicago.
- 2:07:51Fowler went the first seven innings and hit a home run for Cleveland,
- 2:07:55and Forrest is pitching in the eighth.
- 2:07:58For the Browns of Detroit, Garver will go for the Brownies and Trucks for the Tigers.
- 2:08:04Final score in the National League, the Phillies up there in first place.
- 2:08:08Seven runs, seven hits in the air behind Kierg Simmonds,
- 2:08:11his fourth win against one setback.
- 2:08:14The Giants are run only three hits, so Simmons, no errors.
- 2:08:16Carslow, Magley, and Higley from New York and Carslow, the starters, the losers.
- 2:08:21At the end of six and a half innings, it's a 2-2 tie between the Pirates and the Cubs.
- 2:08:26And the Red Sox need to go to the west tonight, and that's that.
- 2:08:29The United 2, Braves leading here at Brooklyn, and Sid Gordon up,
- 2:08:34and Newton pitches in half of all one.
- 2:08:40Gordon has one hit to official that back, two walks.
- 2:08:45Strong stocky right-hand hitter, takes high inside, a 2.
- 2:08:51Simmons, 270.
- 2:09:02Ball, curveball high inside, and then there's ball three.
- 2:09:06You know, Bucum is big, about 6'5", 240 pounds, and he's 35 pounds.
- 2:09:17And he's big at the side of the house.
- 2:09:23Throws, all four, and Gordon picks up his third walk this afternoon.
- 2:09:30Braves now had a half a dozen free passes given to them, and Bigfoot had walked six of the Dodgers.
- 2:09:36The hard thing about Bigfoot is he's been wild in two spurts.
- 2:09:40He walked three straights in his first inning and three straight again in the seventh.
- 2:09:49Will Marshall has had a single and a triple.
- 2:09:53He's a good hitter.
- 2:10:01270 to.
- 2:10:06I feel blood right.
- 2:10:11Pitch is on high, top of the fly, he's got the third, it may be trouble.
- 2:10:16It is in there for a single.
- 2:10:20He's got the ball on the bounce.
- 2:10:23Ball drops about five feet fair, deep back at third base, or out of the short left field.
- 2:10:29Single for Marshall.
- 2:10:31Winning later on in that first pitch, and he's got to end it.
- 2:10:34It isn't as third in it today, number one off Newton.
- 2:10:38Braves are leading nine to two, they're just too soon open the gap.
- 2:10:56Big Cooper, they catch it up, gives a curve inside.
- 2:11:01That's Cooper, bounce at four.
- 2:11:10Got a base hit, line double is last trip.
- 2:11:14That field's right left.
- 2:11:17Cooper swings it over, drives on deep to the right center field.
- 2:11:21It's way out there, and it is in the center field.
- 2:11:25More center field stands for a big ball run for Cooper.
- 2:11:29That's his first home run of the year, and his second straight hit for the Braves,
- 2:11:33and it makes it now cross to a favor of Boston.
- 2:11:37And it's a case of a shooter pitch to the Walker-Cipper household.
- 2:11:40Yes sir.
- 2:11:43So he's tying that one deep in a lower right center field stand,
- 2:11:47right back at the sign where it says 376 feet.
- 2:11:51Three rows of seats in there.
- 2:11:53He hung it in.
- 2:11:56Everybody out, three runs home.
- 2:11:59Braves is widening the gap even more.
- 2:12:01They really have their hitting shoes on.
- 2:12:05And city sister stepping in, had no hit today.
- 2:12:09Cut some fouls this one in the lower first place stand.
- 2:12:17And Newcomb was really jarred.
- 2:12:27Cooper knocked in five runs today in his debut with the Braves.
- 2:12:33First ball over, second strike.
- 2:12:48Well, one run and missed.
- 2:12:50Fair play.
- 2:12:52Lake three, so city has had a rough afternoon.
- 2:12:58He struck out twice, he's gone 0-4, got on once for the walk,
- 2:13:03and he's made an error.
- 2:13:05But he caught his two hits before at bat.
- 2:13:09Lock in a run.
- 2:13:13He's got that average up above 200.
- 2:13:19Comes back one-sixth and he's ball one.
- 2:13:22Well, the Lowes continues throwing on the Brooklyn bullpen.
- 2:13:27Now, big Cooper really putting a big one in the center field stands.
- 2:13:31Twelve, Rogers too.
- 2:13:34Ball strike on the outside, one-and-one.
- 2:13:38Imagine Southworth now, he's very pleased to have this big Cooper with him.
- 2:13:42That ball looks like he's watching.
- 2:13:46They traded him a couple days ago for Ryan.
- 2:13:52Good, one side ball two, two balls, one strike.
- 2:13:57The Newcomb, who went along swimmingly in the eighth inning, got wet.
- 2:14:08Two unfits, one on the line.
- 2:14:14That one would have knocked the horns off Big Don if he'd had any.
- 2:14:19So, the line single, right over the pitcher's head.
- 2:14:26And Brian Bickford, a rich man all afternoon.
- 2:14:32He's hit on the honey side of the stick.
- 2:14:37Yes sir.
- 2:14:42Going after his year's first win.
- 2:14:44He's got a ten-run lead now here in the ninth inning.
- 2:14:48Roger looking for the bunt, he tries, misses.
- 2:14:53Why would you have the pitcher bunt with one out and the man on first in the ninth?
- 2:14:59Well, because he might go out and that moves the man from first, so he might waste it.
- 2:15:03Or he might, if he lines the swing, hit the double play, even worse.
- 2:15:06The bunt in, if he gets him out of the out, there's a bunt.
- 2:15:09Newcomb, off the mound, feels it, throw goes to first base.
- 2:15:12Bickford is out of sacrifice.
- 2:15:14Sacrifices himself, and so giving up the second out, which they figured the pitcher would do.
- 2:15:19Cost him any now, they move Carr into a better scoring position in second base.
- 2:15:23No matter what percentage.

- 2:15:35Sam Jetslow, had one hit, home run.
- 2:15:39That in the fifth inning, switch over to the better left hander.
- 2:15:45In the 3.44, he's a rookie of course, Montreal last year.
- 2:15:49Swings and has a high foul into the third base fan.
- 2:15:53The ball is one strike.
- 2:15:56That throws extremely quick.
- 2:16:00He's a very slender fellow.
- 2:16:04Looks almost bony, but he can run.
- 2:16:09And running, he makes it look easy.
- 2:16:12There's a lot of talk about the leg, about who can outrun the other than a hundred yards.
- 2:16:17Jetslow or Bobby Thompson, the New York Giants.
- 2:16:22Jetslow spins, and it's spinning all the way around.
- 2:16:26The ball's too stressed.
- 2:16:29Two gone, third second.
- 2:16:32Ball to two, paper to Braves.
- 2:16:35A lot of people think that Jetslow is the fastest fellow in spiked shoes.
- 2:16:39New York, the Russians, and the Giants.
- 2:16:42They say that Bobby Thompson cannot outrun anybody in baseball at a hundred yards.
- 2:16:47Someday they may match it. I want to see it.
- 2:16:55Jekyll's pitch, swung on and missed.
- 2:17:02Three runs, big football, following a walk in a single, but a blasting walk.
- 2:17:07Three hits, one man left.
- 2:17:10Last time for the night, coming about.
- 2:17:13We soon have a decision to know what it is.
- 2:17:15It's now four to two in favor of the Braves.
- 2:17:19A three-way wonderful, that's post-sugar crisp.
- 2:17:22A marvelous new cereal that's made from wholesome puffed wheat with a delightful coating of sugar and honey.
- 2:17:28Folks, just let me tell you, it's just fun to eat any one of three ways.
- 2:17:33At breakfast, pour sugar crisp in your cereal bowl and just add milk and cream.

- 2:17:58Yes, there's a cereal, it's dandy for snacks, it's handy, or eat it like candy.
- 2:18:04Look for post-sugar crisp in the red, white, and blue cellophane bag at your gross.
- 2:18:08Ride real soon, yeah?
- 2:18:10And the folks, folks, hope you're enjoying this ball game.
- 2:18:13We'll have another one for you next Saturday.
- 2:18:17Glad we got you down.
- 2:18:19Here's Billy Cox, who singled his last time up.
- 2:18:23It was the first real hit off Bigfoot, the second hit off Bigfoot.
- 2:18:27He's only given up two, and for Cox, this is only his first year out of seven official at bats.
- 2:18:31Swings of the ground ball down the short.
- 2:18:33Buddy Carl charges up for the pass for first, and that's all for Cox.
- 2:18:38One up and one gone, last time of the night.
- 2:18:45Bruce Edwards marching up there with the lumber, and Jim Russell, who came to the Dodgers from the Braves,
- 2:18:50is going over to the bat rack, a fine look to hit for Newford.
- 2:18:55On to the last two innings, all three of the book and pitches, first half in and bank, then Newford.
- 2:18:59All was scored off.
- 2:19:01Edwards fouls his pitch back.
- 2:19:06Bigfoot, he's in a long ride.
- 2:19:09Dan's howling over a scramble for a foul ball.
- 2:19:17Redhander deals. There's a high foul, close to the post base fan.
- 2:19:22Still close, and back in amongst the customers.
- 2:19:31Another loss, two strikes.
- 2:19:47Mars game two o'clock, 12,000 seats, all prices available.
- 2:19:51Pitch is swung on, grounded down to short, caught up with it.
- 2:19:55In time, Edwards out, so far it's the first two.
- 2:20:01And Russell now reports to the umpire, and here's the announcement.
- 2:20:04Russell arrives by the played umpire.
- 2:20:12You know, if you give the umpire the wrong player, you've got to get that player and get him up there.
- 2:20:18Wonder what happened in the World Series of 36.
- 2:20:25Pitch is high outside, ball one, no 37.
- 2:20:29And the Yankees are giants.
- 2:20:31Pitch high outside to pinch hitter Russell, ball one.
- 2:20:35Buster's 7 to 34, hitting 2 or 6.
- 2:20:39Switch hitter batting left handed, takes a foul strike, one and one.
- 2:20:43Two out.

- 2:21:01Another World Series game, 37, Harry Gumbit was given to the umpire,
- 2:21:07and the public defense system said Gumbit.
- 2:21:09A big cop went in and out of the bullpen, if you recall.
- 2:21:12So we got Gumbit off the bench, made him pitch to one hitter.
- 2:21:16As a ball drilled in the right field for a pinch of single.
- 2:21:20Third hit for the Dodgers, so Russell comes up with a clean base hit.
- 2:21:29Number three for Brooklyn.
- 2:21:32Johnny Jorgensen was off the one for the year, who pinch hit in the seventh inning and drilled base on balls.
- 2:21:36Left of the base of the road, of course, in Brooklyn's first run.
- 2:21:41First run the Dodgers scored in 20 innings.
- 2:21:43Jorgensen left hand hitter, swings and bounces down to first.
- 2:21:47Jorgensen can't pound the ball for a minute, then he does, steps on the bat for the outbound ballgame.
- 2:21:52That's all.
- 2:21:54All-on, one hit in the last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:21:58So the Braves win the ballgame.
- 2:22:02The 12 runs, 13 hits in there on the Dodgers, two runs, three hits, and for Brooklyn, no error.
- 2:22:08We'll let some other scores in a second, but you know, when it comes to keeping an A-1 physical shape,
- 2:22:14it just wouldn't hurt any of us to take a tip from a championship ball club, the Dodgers.
- 2:22:20You know, they put a lot of emphasis on the right kind of meals in that training program.
- 2:22:24You'll find a steady performance, I catch a Roy Campanella saying this,
- 2:22:29if you want to do a good job every day, all season long, well, you just have to eat properly.
- 2:22:35And when you remember Roy's remarks, folks, remember this, too.
- 2:22:39You aren't eating properly, and they should eat a good, substantial breakfast.
- 2:22:42One that includes fruit, bread and butter, beverage, and a cereal.
- 2:22:46That's the kind of nourishment you need to keep you going strong right through the morning.
- 2:22:52And for that cereal in that better breakfast lineup, pick your favorite post-cereal.
- 2:22:58All post-cereals are loaded with solid rounds of nourishment.
- 2:23:02Yes, sir. Eat a better breakfast each day with your favorite post-cereal included.

- 2:23:37Bigford wins his first game, he's lost three.
- 2:23:40He's now one and one with Brooklyn.
- 2:23:42And last time, he had two or one with the Dodgers.
- 2:23:46I think those are about the salient statistics.
- 2:23:48State attendance, 19,488.
- 2:23:51And you couldn't have asked for a nicer day than the Weatherman.
- 2:23:5612,000 seats of all prices available for the Mars game at 2 o'clock.
- 2:24:04The Braves have now moved right up on the heels of the Dodgers, only five percentage points behind them.
