- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast from the Volume Podcast Network.
- 0:14Speaker 1: It's Thursday. That means it's time to enter the Thursday Thunderdome.
- 0:24Speaker 1: On today's show, our special guests will compete alongside my
- 0:29Speaker 1: co host Professional Sports Better Mr. Lonely Heart's Simon Hunter
- 0:35Speaker 1: in an epic test of wagers, and with that's quickly
- 0:39Speaker 1: made this show the most celebrated contribution to the sports
- 0:44Speaker 1: betting universe since the three team teaser. What's up, Simon?
- 0:52Speaker 1: What a great couple of days it's been for your boy?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Do you want to share? I'm probably not going to
- 0:59Speaker 1: talk about women and more of their show because it's
- 1:01Speaker 1: come back now and haunted me in a major way,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and I'm getting rid of all my worthy possessions and
- 1:07Speaker 1: I've taken all my cash everything. I have cleared out
- 1:09Speaker 1: all the bank accounts to all the lock boxes, and
- 1:12Speaker 1: I put it all into crypto and the stock market.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yesterday I woke up probably down like a hundred fifty
- 1:18Speaker 1: thou dollars in the crypto market yesterday, and then by
- 1:21Speaker 1: right now recording this and buying back in and crypto
- 1:24Speaker 1: and the stock market stadium, I'm probably like three so
- 1:27Speaker 1: kids when it's red, you buy when it's green, you
- 1:31Speaker 1: buy more. Are you serious that you you did that yesterday? Yeah, dude,
- 1:38Speaker 1: that's the oldest saying in the book is the old
- 1:42Speaker 1: men they sell when it's red, the young man buys
- 1:45Speaker 1: when it's red. I love the stock market. I love crypto, dude,
- 1:47Speaker 1: like literally, I think it was trade in bitcoin got
- 1:51Speaker 1: down to um like thirty five and now it's up
- 1:54Speaker 1: to forty one. So like, I'm still not touching that.
- 1:57Speaker 1: But those coins, all of this other stuff, I mean,
- 1:59Speaker 1: it's all it all moves and waves, but the stock
- 2:02Speaker 1: market is just different where I pretty much went real
- 2:05Speaker 1: heavy and I woke up this morning with a lot
- 2:07Speaker 1: of money. So kids, please don't just gamble by stock
- 2:12Speaker 1: by crypto. Oh Jesus Christ, listen between your financial advice
- 2:17Speaker 1: and your dating advice. I feel like this is the
- 2:22Speaker 1: opposite of what people should be doing if they want
- 2:25Speaker 1: to find love, happiness, and security. Let's see, you know
- 2:30Speaker 1: that's what I'm about. You just drop that right there,
- 2:32Speaker 1: that you just walk away. I like that. I am
- 2:34Speaker 1: about companionship, I am about respect, I am about love.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I'm about fulfillment. I already made my risk. By the way,
- 2:41Speaker 1: the risk. You know what the risk is. The risk
- 2:43Speaker 1: isn't getting married. The risk is in dedication. That's the risk. Simon. Today,
- 2:50Speaker 1: your challengers come to us from the Jenkins and Jones Podcast,
- 2:54Speaker 1: one of the funniest, and this is true, one of
- 2:56Speaker 1: the funniest and most beloved NBA podcasts anywhere, presented by
- 3:00Speaker 1: our friends and colleagues at the Volume podcast Network. In
- 3:03Speaker 1: an unprecedented move, Simon, you will face the entire Jenkins
- 3:09Speaker 1: and Jones crew, which means you will take on three challengers.
- 3:14Speaker 1: The first is a Ted Lasso and Megan the Stallion
- 3:18Speaker 1: Stand if you don't count Bradley Beale and Jayson Tatum.
- 3:22Speaker 1: He's the most influential St. Louis native in the NBA today.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Welcome to the show, le Jet Throw Jenkins a k a.
- 3:32Speaker 1: John Nichols. Have we talked about my St. Louis roots? No,
- 3:38Speaker 1: we haven't. Let let's talk about those. Not only not
- 3:41Speaker 1: only is my mom from St. Louis. Not only is
- 3:45Speaker 1: my half of my family from St. Louis. My grandfather
- 3:48Speaker 1: played in the minor leagues for the St. Louis Browns
- 3:53Speaker 1: back in the way, way way back day and played
- 3:56Speaker 1: football at Washington University. In St. Louis. Your mall was
- 4:00Speaker 1: James Cool Papa Bill. He's a Negro League Hall of Famer.
- 4:03Speaker 1: That is a much bigger accolade than my grandfather playing
- 4:10Speaker 1: in the minor leagues, and I feel a little bit diminished.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Grandmother lives off the street. Name to him always he's
- 4:19Speaker 1: Uncle James. Meat's go on to our next guest. That's fantastic.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I'm super excited for you. Cool Papa Bell sounds a
- 4:28Speaker 1: little bit better than Babe Goldwasser. That's fine, alright, it
- 4:32Speaker 1: was really good at Also, Also, by the way, he
- 4:35Speaker 1: taught Jimmy Connor's mother how to play tennis. And you
- 4:38Speaker 1: know who taught Jimmy Connors how to play tennis, Jimmy
- 4:40Speaker 1: Connor's mother. So by the transitive property, my grandfather taught
- 4:44Speaker 1: Jimmy Connors how to play tennis. I'll give it to you. Simon.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Your second challenger is the latter half of the Jenkins
- 4:52Speaker 1: and Jones title, and a man who has spent over
- 4:54Speaker 1: a decade growing and cultivating one of the most cherished
- 5:00Speaker 1: handles in all of the Twitter Verse. Welcome Dragonfly Jones
- 5:05Speaker 1: a k A. Tyler appreciate Do you have anything that
- 5:09Speaker 1: you'd like to say that would make me feel bad.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Congrats to your grandpa, man. I'm sure he was a
- 5:15Speaker 1: hell of a baseball player. He probably wasn't better than
- 5:18Speaker 1: Coop Papa Bell. But you know, it's just the grandpa man.
- 5:21Speaker 1: It was more about my connections to St. Louis. It's
- 5:23Speaker 1: not like you know what I mean, he just happens
- 5:25Speaker 1: to be a hell. We know whatever. Listen, listen. I
- 5:29Speaker 1: was kind of gonna root for you in the game.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Now probably not so much, all right, So, I mean
- 5:33Speaker 1: your final challenger is the straw that stirs the drink
- 5:36Speaker 1: on the Jenkins and Jones podcast, the president and inventor
- 5:40Speaker 1: of the Weepy Dad Gang, and along with I was
- 5:44Speaker 1: gonna say with me, but really with Matt Mitchell. He's
- 5:48Speaker 1: one of the five best ad read guys in podcast history.
- 5:52Speaker 1: He's the pride of Long Beach, California. Mike Guarda Bacio
- 6:00Speaker 1: going on, guys, thanks for having us well, I was
- 6:02Speaker 1: thrilled to have you guys. Now, it is not a competition, man,
- 6:08Speaker 1: It's exactly a competition. That's the whole point. It's the Thunderdome.
- 6:12Speaker 1: It's a game, and I get to choose who wins. Now,
- 6:16Speaker 1: I got three people I want to win and one
- 6:19Speaker 1: guy I want to send back to St. Louis. I
- 6:21Speaker 1: love your grandpa. Sounds cool, bro, Thank you. He's been
- 6:26Speaker 1: dead for about thirty years, but he would appreciate this conversation.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Here we go. Here's how the game is played today.
- 6:32Speaker 1: You'll answer two kinds of questions. First, traditional trivia questions
- 6:36Speaker 1: about sports, sports betting, and the world at large. Second,
- 6:40Speaker 1: completely subjective, totally assinine, open ended questions or prompts that
- 6:46Speaker 1: I alone will judge and an all likelihood try to
- 6:52Speaker 1: favor my best friend, Simon Hunter accumulate points. You must
- 6:58Speaker 1: answer the trivia questions correctly and also convinced me that
- 7:03Speaker 1: your responses to those open ended prompts are better than
- 7:07Speaker 1: the responses from your opponents, because, just like sports betting,
- 7:11Speaker 1: you can't get them. All right, I can't fucking believe
- 7:13Speaker 1: your uncle is really cool? Pop about. I'm dead serious.
- 7:21Speaker 1: My family lives off the street named after for sure,
- 7:23Speaker 1: they got the street changed his name. Amazing. All right,
- 7:26Speaker 1: let's start. Part one is about the NBA Hall of Fame.
- 7:29Speaker 1: The next induction class of the Basketball Hall of Fame
- 7:33Speaker 1: was just announced, and while folks like Paul Pierce and
- 7:35Speaker 1: Chris Weber, our household names to many fans. Let's talk
- 7:39Speaker 1: about lesser known honorees. John, This question is for you.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Cotton fitz Simmons got his NBA coaching start in this city,
- 7:48Speaker 1: coaching their team on three separate occasions. When he took
- 7:52Speaker 1: the job in nineteen seventy, the city's metro population was
- 7:56Speaker 1: under nine thousand. Today it's five million, the largest in
- 8:01Speaker 1: the Mountain time Zone. Mountain time Zone. That's the worst
- 8:04Speaker 1: part of this game. You're just like, what in the world,
- 8:06Speaker 1: what is even that question, Cotton fitz Simmons. I thought
- 8:09Speaker 1: that was like some Boston Celtics ship. I thought there's
- 8:13Speaker 1: a hint. Here's a hint. The name of the airport
- 8:15Speaker 1: in this city is my favorite name for an airport,
- 8:18Speaker 1: of any airport in the world, Sky Harbor. Is it
- 8:23Speaker 1: the most racist city in the Mountain time Zone? It
- 8:27Speaker 1: might be. It's very possible. Okay, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Arizona.
- 8:34Speaker 1: All right, here we go, Tyler. John totally did not
- 8:39Speaker 1: act cool in that first question at all. My uncle
- 8:44Speaker 1: would not appreciate that. He is not happy, Tyler. The
- 8:49Speaker 1: Chicago Bulls delivered Michael Jordan's his final NBA title. That
- 8:53Speaker 1: championship roster boasted four players born outside the United States
- 8:59Speaker 1: Basketball Hall of Famer. Tony Ku, coach of Croatia, was
- 9:02Speaker 1: one of them. For one point a piece named any
- 9:07Speaker 1: of the other three. Okay, Luke Longly from Australia. Wow,
- 9:11Speaker 1: let's see who else? Bill Winnington, Billing? My god, I
- 9:16Speaker 1: was just gonna give you a hint for that one. Yeah, yeah,
- 9:18Speaker 1: Bill Winnington was Canadian. Look long it was Australian. It's
- 9:23Speaker 1: a Harvard Steve Steve Kurt Steve Kerr was born in Lebanon.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Oh my god, Yeah, there it is. You know, I
- 9:32Speaker 1: kind of view as an American, But yeah, Tyler is
- 9:35Speaker 1: about to mop us. Yeah. I do not gamble, so
- 9:40Speaker 1: it's I'm not going to trivia like I do not
- 9:44Speaker 1: show up for trivia nights and work bro likes. My
- 9:46Speaker 1: wife's like a fifteen time trivia champions. Where is she
- 9:51Speaker 1: yet in work? Right now? We need her. I will
- 9:55Speaker 1: say right now that Tyler just pulled off one of
- 9:58Speaker 1: the most impressive answers we've had in the history of
- 10:01Speaker 1: the Thunderdome. Well he Thunderdome Tyler, that's what we call him.
- 10:05Speaker 1: That was his birth I know a little bit about
- 10:07Speaker 1: a lot of ship man. That's you are officially known
- 10:12Speaker 1: as the Cliff Cleaven of this podcast. Mike ben Wallace
- 10:17Speaker 1: will enter the Hall of Fame thanks to his legendary defense,
- 10:21Speaker 1: which earned him four Defensive Player of the Year awards.
- 10:26Speaker 1: That's tied for the most all time with this famous center,
- 10:29Speaker 1: the NBA's only Congolese Hall of Famer, the Key the
- 10:34Speaker 1: Keim Bay. I remember that he built a school in
- 10:37Speaker 1: the Congo. Okay, so I actually no, I'm great at trivia.
- 10:39Speaker 1: It's just John he built like yeah, yeah, is one
- 10:43Speaker 1: of the greatest philanthropists and like all the sports, like
- 10:46Speaker 1: you build a huge hospital in Congo, like shouts at
- 10:49Speaker 1: the Kim Bay Man. He's a good dude. Simon High
- 10:54Speaker 1: School scout Howard Garfinkel will be inducted into the Basketball
- 10:58Speaker 1: Hall of Fame because of his legendary Five Star basketball camp,
- 11:02Speaker 1: which became the recruiting mecca of summer basketball for over
- 11:06Speaker 1: forty years. Five Star operated camps in Pittsburgh and Virginia,
- 11:10Speaker 1: as well as one in the town of Honesdale, situated
- 11:15Speaker 1: in this Pennsylvania Mountain range, a beloved recreation area for
- 11:21Speaker 1: vacationing Northeasterners. You're ask me about the Appalachian Mountains? Are
- 11:27Speaker 1: you fucking kidding me? Simon, you live in Pennsylvania. I
- 11:31Speaker 1: live in Jersey, and I don't know that that was
- 11:36Speaker 1: a weird question the Poconos. Just so these guys, I'm
- 11:40Speaker 1: awful trivia. I've chad tries to cheat and I've yet
- 11:43Speaker 1: to win this game. So you guys are you? Guys
- 11:44Speaker 1: are in good company right now? You should feet so, Simon,
- 11:48Speaker 1: you're not getting credit for that. Sorry, here's the prompt.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Everyone's got to give me an answer. When giving a
- 11:51Speaker 1: Hall of Fame induction speech, you should thank all the
- 11:53Speaker 1: people who helped you get there, but you should also
- 11:56Speaker 1: intentionally not think the haters, detractors, and distractors who made
- 11:59Speaker 1: it difficult feed even harder. If you were elected to
- 12:02Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame, who was one person you would
- 12:04Speaker 1: definitely not think in your induction speech? John Tyler and
- 12:09Speaker 1: Mike you were going into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Simon,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you were going into the sports betting Hall of Fame. Simon,
- 12:14Speaker 1: you get to go first. I'm new to the whole
- 12:16Speaker 1: Twitter world for the gambling, and I've never experienced anything
- 12:21Speaker 1: like the amount of hate we get so little back story.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Me and Chad went five and oh last year to
- 12:26Speaker 1: start the year, and we ended five and oh and
- 12:29Speaker 1: still people hated me. People are just so brutal on Twitter.
- 12:32Speaker 1: And I've learned my lesson that when people are coming
- 12:35Speaker 1: in real hard on me about one thing that I'm saying,
- 12:38Speaker 1: I need to double down on my bets. So I
- 12:41Speaker 1: put out there the Super Bowl the spread was gonna matter,
- 12:43Speaker 1: and for two weeks people are dragged Chad's good name
- 12:46Speaker 1: through the mud. And what do you know, The spread
- 12:49Speaker 1: was three. The Buccaneers won by about twenty points. The
- 12:52Speaker 1: spread did not matter. So it's one of those So
- 12:54Speaker 1: who are you not thinking? Twitter? Yeah, they're the worst.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I don't know about that. You Chod Tyler. You don't
- 13:01Speaker 1: hate me, Tyler your next um. I don't have a
- 13:04Speaker 1: particular person, but I would just like to like not
- 13:07Speaker 1: think the Utah Jazz for anything they've ever done in
- 13:09Speaker 1: my life as a basketball fan. They're just like the
- 13:12Speaker 1: most annoying franchise, right. There were those franchises who are
- 13:16Speaker 1: who's never good enough to win at all, but they're
- 13:18Speaker 1: good enough to take a playoff spot every year. And
- 13:20Speaker 1: just getting in the way of ship. And they're fucking
- 13:22Speaker 1: fans are irritating and horrible. So I would say, like,
- 13:25Speaker 1: you know, the Utah Jazz, they're just unbearable to me
- 13:28Speaker 1: when you go to Springfield. If you're a Utah Jazz fan,
- 13:30Speaker 1: you're not allowed to stop at Tyler's exhibit. I gotta
- 13:33Speaker 1: say that answer feels a little bit like Mike your
- 13:37Speaker 1: next my dad. Wow, no one here is gonna name
- 13:47Speaker 1: someone who made their life harder than my dad. My dad.
- 13:52Speaker 1: That's supposed to be like, not funny, but it's And
- 13:57Speaker 1: I feel bad for laughing this hard at that answer. Wow.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I feel like we need a part two of the
- 14:05Speaker 1: Thunderdome just to unpack that. But I might have to
- 14:07Speaker 1: put you in the league just for being that honest
- 14:10Speaker 1: and open. On the podcast John Chance of Redemption, I
- 14:14Speaker 1: would say Mrs Wales old big hit as she was
- 14:16Speaker 1: my fifth grade teacher that is forever her dog. She
- 14:19Speaker 1: gave me like a d on a four page paper
- 14:22Speaker 1: I wrote on like the mating rituals of Salmon, and
- 14:25Speaker 1: she said I didn't write it, she just didn't believe it.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Like we had MS dolls back then. You know what,
- 14:30Speaker 1: I mean, how the funk did I not write that?
- 14:32Speaker 1: Kids turned in like one paragraph reports and got a's.
- 14:36Speaker 1: But my mom called her and gave her ward four
- 14:38Speaker 1: and got my grade race. So I do know that
- 14:40Speaker 1: even if you had, even if you had at that
- 14:44Speaker 1: time gone to the library with the typewriter right opened
- 14:47Speaker 1: up an encyclopedia and type up a four page paper,
- 14:50Speaker 1: you should have gotten an eight for that bro Like,
- 14:53Speaker 1: she just didn't funk with me. And there's another reason
- 14:55Speaker 1: she did me too, but that's what we'll talk about
- 14:57Speaker 1: in another episode. All right, Well, guess what. I feel
- 15:00Speaker 1: bad for you, But Mike won that round. There's no
- 15:02Speaker 1: way a guy who decides on a podcast he's going
- 15:05Speaker 1: to announce that he's not thinking his dad, if he's
- 15:07Speaker 1: inducted into a Hall of fame, is not winning that round,
- 15:13Speaker 1: honest to god. Decades two too often, some of Planet
- 15:23Speaker 1: Earth's most talented and driven individuals must toil in obscurity
- 15:27Speaker 1: even as they ascend to the very apex of their profession.
- 15:31Speaker 1: The two best of examples of this, of course, are
- 15:34Speaker 1: NHL players and Nobel Prize winning scientists. So let's play
- 15:39Speaker 1: another lightning fast round of hockey player or famous scientists.
- 15:46Speaker 1: The game is simple. I present each of you with
- 15:48Speaker 1: a name. You will tell me if each person is
- 15:51Speaker 1: an NHL player competing for the Stanley Cup or one
- 15:56Speaker 1: of the giants of the scientific community. John's John's out
- 16:00Speaker 1: here like Lebron James last night after you got poked
- 16:03Speaker 1: in the eye, just trying to find the middle rim,
- 16:05Speaker 1: just punching blind right, That's fine though, I'm not going
- 16:09Speaker 1: to be good at this. This this is one to
- 16:14Speaker 1: me first. You're you're up first, ready? Jean Pierre Savage
- 16:20Speaker 1: scientists or hockey player? That's a scientist. One the two
- 16:24Speaker 1: thousand sixteen Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the Design and
- 16:27Speaker 1: Synthesis of Molecular machines. Very nice. I went to a
- 16:32Speaker 1: Blues game back in two thousand and sixte I know
- 16:34Speaker 1: a little bit about hockey. Guess what my first hockey game. St.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Louis Blues Tyler Gustav Forceling Gusta feels like a scientist name.
- 16:49Speaker 1: But this feels like it could be a trick question.
- 16:52Speaker 1: It feels too easy, man. You know, goose Stop is
- 16:54Speaker 1: a fucking chemist, right, um ship you know are They
- 17:01Speaker 1: say go with first instinct? But I don't want to
- 17:03Speaker 1: go from an okay, doak, I am going to go
- 17:06Speaker 1: Nobel Swedish player for the Florida Panthers. If you didn't
- 17:14Speaker 1: go with your first instinct, you would be pissed if
- 17:17Speaker 1: you were wrong. You know exactly that's you can live
- 17:22Speaker 1: with that one. Mike Jacques de Bouche scientists one the
- 17:28Speaker 1: two thousand seventeen Nobel Prize in Chemistry after developing crypto
- 17:32Speaker 1: electron microscopy. Obviously we all know that. Okay, say that again,
- 17:39Speaker 1: please please say that. What did you do again developing
- 17:43Speaker 1: cry oh electron microscopy for bio molecules? You know what
- 17:49Speaker 1: the fund is that? Do you have any idea? I mean,
- 17:51Speaker 1: he could freeze things to see them at a molecular level.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Who wow, I don't even know if you're make in
- 18:00Speaker 1: that up, but it sounded amazing. Prefix Gang Gang, Well done,
- 18:10Speaker 1: Simon John Gabriel Paget Mm hmm doesn't sound smart enough.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I go hockey Canadian player for the New York Islanders.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Well done. Here we go your prompts. Imagine you have
- 18:24Speaker 1: total authority in the world of sports. Select one big
- 18:29Speaker 1: persistent problem in this sports world. Explain how you'd solve
- 18:34Speaker 1: it and why this is worthy of a Nobel Prize prefix. Mike,
- 18:40Speaker 1: you go first. I this is sort of an obvious one,
- 18:44Speaker 1: but I would say that I would, uh sub I
- 18:47Speaker 1: would subject all of the finances of the n C
- 18:49Speaker 1: Double A and its member schools to the same kind
- 18:52Speaker 1: of oversight that everything else at those schools is subject to.
- 18:56Speaker 1: And I would have a revenue share for n C
- 18:58Speaker 1: Double A athletes from all TV contracts and partnership deals
- 19:03Speaker 1: at the n G Double A signs over and above
- 19:05Speaker 1: their costs of hosting championships. You are a thoughtful man.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Oh god, I love that was as lucid and soderful.
- 19:17Speaker 1: And answer, they don't make any money, they don't have
- 19:19Speaker 1: to pay anyone. But if they signed a two billion
- 19:22Speaker 1: dollar television contracts, the people who are playing the games
- 19:26Speaker 1: they're televising get a cut of the money. I don't
- 19:29Speaker 1: know how we don't just clip that and send that
- 19:31Speaker 1: to the world. So the problem of the n C
- 19:34Speaker 1: Double A can be solved. That was amazing. Tyler, you're
- 19:38Speaker 1: pretty good at this game too. You know, we'll let
- 19:40Speaker 1: John and Simon go last, so Tyler, you go next. Yeah, this, Mike,
- 19:45Speaker 1: Michael's a tough act to follow. My solution, Well, my
- 19:49Speaker 1: proposal is, I think that problem that we have, especially
- 19:52Speaker 1: in the NBA and you know college basketball, in any
- 19:55Speaker 1: courtside sports league is that fans to a lot of
- 20:00Speaker 1: ship man and then and and basketball players are always passed.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Would be in the bigger person, I think there should
- 20:07Speaker 1: be a stipulation where if a fan court side says
- 20:10Speaker 1: some ship, some reckless ship to a basketball player, that
- 20:12Speaker 1: there should be there could be a ruling where they
- 20:15Speaker 1: go to the referee and say, hey, this motherfucker's that
- 20:17Speaker 1: such and such and such, I would like to engage
- 20:19Speaker 1: in a fist fight with this band, and the referee
- 20:21Speaker 1: will make a judgment from there if that is spisifed worthy. Yeah, yeah, see,
- 20:25Speaker 1: mikee is out here to solving financial in eiquity. I
- 20:27Speaker 1: just want to see motherfucker's get punched in their mouth
- 20:29Speaker 1: for talking ship. So I like better. I like your
- 20:32Speaker 1: rust gets to slap a Jazz fan once a game.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I do think that's awesome because I do think the
- 20:39Speaker 1: fans that come on the floor or sitting courtside acting
- 20:43Speaker 1: like they've earned something by being able to pay exorbitant
- 20:47Speaker 1: prices or because they know somebody, and then acting like jackasses.
- 20:53Speaker 1: They do. They do deserve some come up and it
- 20:55Speaker 1: will be a challenge for me to award you. The
- 20:58Speaker 1: point since this is the Noble Prize and you are
- 21:01Speaker 1: advocating violence, so let me let me take that. The
- 21:04Speaker 1: Nobel Prize is named after the guy who invented dynamite
- 21:09Speaker 1: violence and its core, it's rooted in violence. Let's let's
- 21:11Speaker 1: let's consider that. But by the way, you might have
- 21:15Speaker 1: just willing yourself a prize for bringing it back around
- 21:18Speaker 1: to the man who invented dynamite being the namesake of
- 21:21Speaker 1: the Nobel Prize. And that's actually John's other uncle on
- 21:29Speaker 1: my mama's side in the cul de sact name John.
- 21:36Speaker 1: It's your turn. This might make Tyler's idea Nolan Boyd,
- 21:42Speaker 1: but my idea is really just I would take all
- 21:45Speaker 1: sports out of Utah and Indiana. That way, nobody would
- 21:49Speaker 1: ever have to fucking go there, bro, you know what
- 21:51Speaker 1: I mean, or deal with their fans. How much more
- 21:54Speaker 1: peaceful would the world be? This may solve like humanity issues.
- 21:59Speaker 1: That's the humanitarians, not make people go to Utah or
- 22:04Speaker 1: fucking Indiana. Ever, that's humanitarian deal with them, weirdos. That's
- 22:09Speaker 1: a humanitarian answer. That is an interesting answer, Simon, I
- 22:13Speaker 1: need you to answer the question. Yeah, it's pretty simple mine.
- 22:17Speaker 1: I honestly think we're at the point out one we
- 22:20Speaker 1: know all the effects playing football has on your body,
- 22:22Speaker 1: the long term, everything like that. It's crazy they're still
- 22:25Speaker 1: not guaranteed contracts that we were put a point now
- 22:27Speaker 1: where the money should just be guarantee the NFL that
- 22:29Speaker 1: of all the sports we know the damage does this
- 22:31Speaker 1: people's body. That would be my biggest thing. My second
- 22:34Speaker 1: biggest thing would definitely be all these athletes. I would
- 22:38Speaker 1: love I know they meet with people about investing and
- 22:40Speaker 1: doing stuff with their money. I would love if there was,
- 22:43Speaker 1: like I thought, kind of thing that same thing happen
- 22:44Speaker 1: with Ai and Reba where they held this money till
- 22:46Speaker 1: he was fifty. I wish it was a program set
- 22:49Speaker 1: in place where like they invest these dudes money from
- 22:51Speaker 1: twenty to thirty four and then they just give them
- 22:53Speaker 1: a lumps on of money once they're out of the
- 22:55Speaker 1: league and they're just chilling because I just think these
- 22:57Speaker 1: dudes they get that money, it's a fast life. So
- 23:00Speaker 1: that would be my biggest thing. Man, year old, ten
- 23:02Speaker 1: million dollars and you hope it works out. Yeah, I
- 23:07Speaker 1: funk with both those answers. You're a good dude for
- 23:09Speaker 1: those answers, but those are okay. Um, here's what I'm
- 23:14Speaker 1: gonna do. I am going to give a point each
- 23:17Speaker 1: to Tyler and John, and I'm going to combine their
- 23:22Speaker 1: answer into one big answer. Because while Mike's is certainly
- 23:27Speaker 1: sort of a beautiful thought and could bring peace and
- 23:31Speaker 1: harmony and fairness and Simon certainly could make athletes lives better,
- 23:36Speaker 1: Tyler and John that just might be the most entertaining.
- 23:38Speaker 1: So they each get a point. Right now, here's the score.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Tyler has four points, Mike has three points. John has
- 23:49Speaker 1: two points. Simon, how the funk do only have one point?
- 23:53Speaker 1: Like you are normally dominating the game at this point,
- 23:56Speaker 1: it's a lot of moving parts, said I rally in
- 23:58Speaker 1: the third period. Well, guess what we're in the third period?
- 24:02Speaker 1: Part three. This week, in the NFL defensive end, Ryan
- 24:05Speaker 1: Karragan signed with Philadelphia after ten seasons in Washington. Karagan
- 24:12Speaker 1: was the franchise is all time leader in SACS and
- 24:15Speaker 1: his departure to the rival Eagles has some fans furious.
- 24:19Speaker 1: But this isn't the first time a star player has
- 24:22Speaker 1: left town for arrival franchise. Let's talk about a few
- 24:25Speaker 1: famous examples. John In two thousand and twelve, the Celtics
- 24:29Speaker 1: lost this star player when he took a discount price
- 24:32Speaker 1: further south in pursuit of another championship the city of Boston.
- 24:40Speaker 1: That was a right. I didn't even finish the question,
- 24:43Speaker 1: Matt Mitchell wrote. All these nice things, I'm not even
- 24:45Speaker 1: gonna finish reading them because you got the answer so quickly.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Wait to rally by the way they had us in
- 24:50Speaker 1: the first half. This is what people related to Hall
- 24:55Speaker 1: of famers who have streets named after them do. Tyler.
- 25:00Speaker 1: In the year two thousand, one of the most beloved
- 25:02Speaker 1: soccer players in Barcelona history, Luis Figo, left for bitter
- 25:08Speaker 1: rival Real Madrid. When he returned to Barcelona for a match,
- 25:11Speaker 1: furious fans through a bevy of objects at Figo. During
- 25:15Speaker 1: every corner kick, one deranged fan through onto the pitch.
- 25:19Speaker 1: The small severed head of this young animal typically roasted
- 25:26Speaker 1: hole in Spanish cuisine. What is the animal whose head
- 25:31Speaker 1: was thrown under the field? I don't have I don't
- 25:36Speaker 1: I don't know ship about soccer. I don't know ship
- 25:38Speaker 1: about small fully roasted Spanish cuisine, animals, um ship, rabbit, pig,
- 25:46Speaker 1: suckling pig. I think, throw a pig head at him.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Damn soccer fans get emotional. That means until the corner kick.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Was the corner kicking like the seventieth minute. That means
- 25:57Speaker 1: this dude had a pig head like in his jack
- 26:00Speaker 1: a pocket for like an hour. When you think about it,
- 26:02Speaker 1: when you unpacked the question. And I did that. As
- 26:05Speaker 1: I read the script that bat Mitchell sent me, I
- 26:07Speaker 1: thought to myself, how did they get this into the stadium?
- 26:10Speaker 1: Was it in a bag? Was he holding it? Didn't
- 26:13Speaker 1: start to smell? I thought about all those things. You
- 26:15Speaker 1: have one of those camelbacks that people put wine in,
- 26:18Speaker 1: you know what I mean? And he just had a
- 26:19Speaker 1: sucking fer minting Simon. In two thousand and one, this
- 26:27Speaker 1: wide receiver signed with John Gruten's Oakland Raiders, leaving behind
- 26:31Speaker 1: a legendary career with the Raiders regional rival to form
- 26:36Speaker 1: an aging tandem with wide out Tim Brown Jerry Rice.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Jerry Rice is the answer Simon Hunter on the comeback trail.
- 26:48Speaker 1: And if you had asked me that question, I was
- 26:49Speaker 1: gonna take my computer out into the Hall where I
- 26:51Speaker 1: have a picture of Jerry Rice. That's my favorite football
- 26:53Speaker 1: player of all time. Oh yeah, I'm a Well guess
- 26:58Speaker 1: what you're getting this question? Are you ready? In Red Sox,
- 27:04Speaker 1: Star was traded to the rival Yankees for cash, despite
- 27:08Speaker 1: winning eighty nine games for them as a starting pitcher
- 27:12Speaker 1: and leading them to three World Series titles. Babe Ruth,
- 27:15Speaker 1: answer to the question? Or is that part of the
- 27:16Speaker 1: setup that is the answer to the question. Babe Ruth. Well,
- 27:23Speaker 1: it's like you never know, maybe the questions about what
- 27:25Speaker 1: Babe Ruth's favorite food was or something, But it's Babe Ruth.
- 27:28Speaker 1: I know these questions are always a journey. You really
- 27:30Speaker 1: got to be listening. You've gotta be listening for what
- 27:35Speaker 1: the actual question is, because you're getting it wrapped in
- 27:38Speaker 1: a very very special package. Here's the prompts for this section.
- 27:42Speaker 1: During a long career, star athletes often switched teams, but
- 27:46Speaker 1: only rarely do they defect directly to a big rival.
- 27:49Speaker 1: If you could make any star athletes signed with their
- 27:53Speaker 1: biggest rival next season, who would you choose? If the
- 27:58Speaker 1: goal is to create the maximum amount of chaos? All
- 28:03Speaker 1: three of us have the same answer. Answer, John, you
- 28:10Speaker 1: go first, Steph going to the Lakers? Are you fucking
- 28:13Speaker 1: kidding me? Do you know what that would do to
- 28:16Speaker 1: those Silicon Valley nerds? At least eight people would spontaneously
- 28:20Speaker 1: combust at their fucking Apple computer. Bro, you know what
- 28:24Speaker 1: I mean? That would create absolute chaos and do like,
- 28:27Speaker 1: there's nothing more ridiculous than that, Steph and Bron Steph
- 28:31Speaker 1: leaving the Babe for the Lakers, Dog, no doubt, step
- 28:34Speaker 1: to the Lakers? You think would create a y two
- 28:37Speaker 1: k event in the state of California. Humans would explode
- 28:41Speaker 1: on the spot. Twitter would lose a percentage of its
- 28:45Speaker 1: user base from Warriors fans being like, I'm not sticking
- 28:48Speaker 1: around for this, bro, I'm sucking out. Do you know
- 28:51Speaker 1: what we would do, Dog? We would burn them at
- 28:55Speaker 1: the state You feel me? Online? Bro? It would be small,
- 29:01Speaker 1: I would I'm salibating thinking about this right now. Oh
- 29:07Speaker 1: my god. Alright, Simon, I want to hear of Tyler
- 29:10Speaker 1: and Mike agree. But by the way, this is gonna
- 29:13Speaker 1: be where their connection to each other, their camaraderie, their
- 29:17Speaker 1: commitment to their podcast comes to a test, because do
- 29:21Speaker 1: they want to win the Thunderdome or do they all
- 29:23Speaker 1: want to know I forfeit my point. I'm not even
- 29:26Speaker 1: gonna answer. I give my my ability to compete for
- 29:29Speaker 1: the point up to John. John has a perfect answer
- 29:32Speaker 1: that question. Wow, alright, Simon, what's your answer? I don't
- 29:35Speaker 1: know if I want, Simon, there is one answer. There's
- 29:37Speaker 1: one answer I thought of that could be better than this,
- 29:40Speaker 1: that kind of a brand. I went with Ronaldo coming
- 29:42Speaker 1: back to the Spanish Premier League and going to play
- 29:45Speaker 1: with Messi. If he went to Barcelona, Dude, that would
- 29:48Speaker 1: be a world thing. The whole world would explode because
- 29:50Speaker 1: that would literally create pure chaos across the country. All Right,
- 29:54Speaker 1: this is tough because I was thinking about Aaron Rodgers
- 29:58Speaker 1: to the Bears that that was actually my answer. Well,
- 30:01Speaker 1: football is not like that anymore. I mean it's it's
- 30:04Speaker 1: it's really like I don't most football fans wouldn't be like, oh,
- 30:08Speaker 1: to the Bears like you like Bears fans, Bears and
- 30:11Speaker 1: Packers fans are invested in that. But I don't think
- 30:13Speaker 1: like your average Seahawks fan wouldn't be like, how could
- 30:16Speaker 1: he do this in this in the same way that
- 30:19Speaker 1: like every basketball fan would be furious as that, and
- 30:22Speaker 1: not even just basketball fans, your average fucking accountant would
- 30:26Speaker 1: be like, that doesn't already watch basketball? Would say this
- 30:29Speaker 1: is why I don't watch basketball? Like what? Would be mad?
- 30:32Speaker 1: That aren't even fans of the game? Bro? You know
- 30:36Speaker 1: Atho Ronado teaming up with Messy would be the same show.
- 30:39Speaker 1: That's a that's a world would literally break out. Let
- 30:45Speaker 1: me refer to the previous question where a fan through
- 30:49Speaker 1: the head of a pig at a player who had
- 30:52Speaker 1: left his team. They'd be throwing elephant heads on the
- 30:55Speaker 1: field and ship what. Here's how we're gonna answer. Look,
- 31:00Speaker 1: I gotta say, I gotta, I gotta give it to
- 31:02Speaker 1: sign I got all right. So here's the score going
- 31:08Speaker 1: into the final round the Grand Finale. Tyler's at four,
- 31:11Speaker 1: Mike's at four, John's at three, Signmons at three. Uh,
- 31:14Speaker 1: and the topic in the Grand Finale is coaches who
- 31:18Speaker 1: could ball first? Each of you have to decide how
- 31:22Speaker 1: many of your points you would like to risk. So
- 31:25Speaker 1: Tyler and Mike you have four points to risk, John
- 31:28Speaker 1: and Simon you have three points to risk. Please, this
- 31:30Speaker 1: is a very high tech system. Please close your eyes.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Now hold up your fingers with your wager amount. All right,
- 31:38Speaker 1: here we go. Bill Russell will be inducted into the
- 31:41Speaker 1: Basketball Hall of Fame this year as a coach, becoming
- 31:45Speaker 1: only the fifth person ever inducted separately as a player
- 31:50Speaker 1: and a coach. The first to achieve such an honor
- 31:54Speaker 1: was this man, the first player to be named a
- 31:57Speaker 1: college basketball All American three times. He went on to
- 32:01Speaker 1: become one of the greatest coaches in the history of
- 32:03Speaker 1: team sports, with a dominant team throughout the Johnson and
- 32:08Speaker 1: Nixon presidencies. Who was the first person inducted into the
- 32:13Speaker 1: Basketball Hall of Fame as both player and Coach's play
- 32:23Speaker 1: rain all Day, No got jobs, some said the first
- 32:34Speaker 1: person inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as both
- 32:37Speaker 1: a player and a coach. Tyler starting with you, I
- 32:44Speaker 1: wagered four and my answer is John Wooden. Amazingly, Tyler
- 32:48Speaker 1: got the right answer and he wagered four. He now
- 32:51Speaker 1: is eight points Mike Europe. Next, I answered John Wooden,
- 32:57Speaker 1: and I'm also Mr. Double Down. I also wagered four points. Wow,
- 33:03Speaker 1: it's easy to bet invisible money. John. I went against
- 33:09Speaker 1: my normal way of operating and betted at the bet
- 33:12Speaker 1: the farm. You feel me, and I said, would Wow? Alright,
- 33:18Speaker 1: So now now we got Tyler at eight Mike at eight,
- 33:20Speaker 1: John and six. I know Simon bet everything, and I'm
- 33:23Speaker 1: almost positive he didn't know this answer. Yeah. Literally have
- 33:26Speaker 1: not got one of these questions. Right, I think we've
- 33:28Speaker 1: been doing it for three months, I said Jerry West.
- 33:30Speaker 1: I had no idea. I was just like some old
- 33:31Speaker 1: white guy, let me just pick. But it was the
- 33:34Speaker 1: wrong old white guy. You were close. You had the
- 33:36Speaker 1: right age and ethnicity. Also the right first two letters. Amazingly,
- 33:41Speaker 1: not that I wanna, you know, bring it back to
- 33:44Speaker 1: me at the end of my podcast. Uh, just to
- 33:47Speaker 1: win John Wooden also my great great grandfather. That fact.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Oh there's no but come on, you put that big
- 34:00Speaker 1: joke on the table as soon as the cool pop.
- 34:04Speaker 1: I had the script. I had the script. I knew
- 34:06Speaker 1: when I could bring it back. But for a second,
- 34:08Speaker 1: did anybody believe me? Simon did one second? I was shook.
- 34:12Speaker 1: I was just like what Chad's an athlete head would
- 34:16Speaker 1: have filled up more of the screen. Yeah, that's big,
- 34:21Speaker 1: big years all right. Well, right now Tyler and Mike,
- 34:26Speaker 1: you guys both have eight points. So for the second
- 34:30Speaker 1: time ever in the history of the Thunderdome, we have
- 34:33Speaker 1: to institute the Thunderdome playoff. Matt Mitchell, take us away
- 34:40Speaker 1: to successfully complete the Thunderdome Sudden Death Challenge, and in
- 34:44Speaker 1: honor of your two favorite states, please add up these
- 34:50Speaker 1: two numbers. The individual who comes closest will be declared
- 34:54Speaker 1: the winner. The first number is the total number of
- 34:58Speaker 1: Utah Jazz well Stern Conference championships. The second number is
- 35:04Speaker 1: the state of Indiana's rank in joining the Union. In
- 35:08Speaker 1: other words, Indiana was the blank state out of fifty.
- 35:13Speaker 1: That number plus the number of Utah Jazz Western Conference
- 35:17Speaker 1: championships let me know when you guys are ready. I'm
- 35:21Speaker 1: pretty much ready. All right, Tyler, you go first, Okay,
- 35:25Speaker 1: I know for sure that the Jazz have to Western
- 35:28Speaker 1: Conference championships. They're going to two finals. Their whole week
- 35:31Speaker 1: gas um history. Now, Indiana, when they became a state,
- 35:35Speaker 1: I want to I want to say, they look like
- 35:37Speaker 1: a state that probably came aboard around twenty two or so.
- 35:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna go twenty two and two. I'm gonna rollout
- 35:44Speaker 1: from Tyler, Mike. I am going to take the under
- 35:50Speaker 1: and go wow, because because I thought they would be
- 35:55Speaker 1: like I gonna be person on the prices you try,
- 36:03Speaker 1: and I got twenty three and day, hey Man, that's
- 36:06Speaker 1: some Utah Jashhi gotta say, where are you? Jas Man
- 36:10Speaker 1: might have been right, well, but now think about it.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Now think about it because I'm giving Tyler twenty four
- 36:15Speaker 1: through fifty two, right, and I'm taking We know they're
- 36:19Speaker 1: not one of the original nine, so I'm taking ten
- 36:22Speaker 1: to twenty two. What is the answer? Tyler was correct
- 36:27Speaker 1: in that the Jazz have two titles. Indiana was the
- 36:32Speaker 1: nineteenth state. The answer is twenty one. And Mike's disgusting
- 36:36Speaker 1: display of one dollar bob Wow, Wow, he took the
- 36:44Speaker 1: jet ski from me on prices right by putting a
- 36:46Speaker 1: dollar on top of my ship. Crazy, unbelievable. You know what.
- 36:51Speaker 1: I did not see Mike doing that that there's so
- 36:54Speaker 1: much money on the line. I'm just trying to feed
- 36:57Speaker 1: my family, you know, like it's it's all. You got
- 37:00Speaker 1: two kids out here. Tyler was describing his thought process,
- 37:04Speaker 1: and I wanted to go, stop, don't describe your thoughts.
- 37:10Speaker 1: I mean, I was, I was. I said I would
- 37:13Speaker 1: get a guest twenty two, so I don't. I don't
- 37:15Speaker 1: feel too bad about I only move my my answer
- 37:17Speaker 1: by one. Mike doesn't feel bad about it, all, right,
- 37:21Speaker 1: do you know, you know who we can blame for
- 37:24Speaker 1: Mike's dirty, dastardly deeds and the way he plays my
- 37:28Speaker 1: absent father, his father. Yo, what a com back. That's incredible.
- 37:41Speaker 1: It's Chad just sis there nodding his head. That what. Listen, guys,
- 37:50Speaker 1: you have played valiantly and courageously and everyone in the
- 37:55Speaker 1: Thunderdome appreciates it. Before we sign off, here's a word
- 38:00Speaker 1: from our fearless leader, Action Network CEO, Patrick Keene. Shut up,
