- 0:30Speaker 1: of Bounds radio app, Straight Funk Bow Bounds. We are
- 0:35Speaker 1: on Spotify, so today we're not on YouTube because I'm
- 0:39Speaker 1: on the road. So the show, like Tom Lougan Bill
- 0:44Speaker 1: going heavy old Miss Louisville, mixed in with some Gunner
- 0:48Speaker 1: Stockton and Arch Manning and stuff. All of that will
- 0:52Speaker 1: be on Spotify, Spotify search out of Bounds with bow Bounds.
- 0:57Speaker 1: We'd love for you to hit subscribe. Jackson spends a
- 1:01Speaker 1: million hours on the podcast usually, I mean it's on
- 1:04Speaker 1: Spotify and Apple Podcasts, but also on YouTube the YouTube channel.
- 1:11Speaker 1: But we're not on YouTube today, so Spotify Search out
- 1:15Speaker 1: of Bounds with bow Bounds. Logan, Bill and I went
- 1:19Speaker 1: heavy at seven point thirty in the SEC Insider hit.
- 1:24Speaker 1: We talked a lot about Nil and the portal and
- 1:30Speaker 1: not in the typical way. We tied in John Caliperi
- 1:35Speaker 1: and proof that it's about having the right people. Anybody
- 1:39Speaker 1: in the SEC can win in any in football, basketball, baseball,
- 1:44Speaker 1: any team can bo that's not true. Really, what were
- 1:47Speaker 1: you saying four years ago about Vanderbilt? You just said,
- 1:50Speaker 1: what if you and I were having a steak dinner tonight,
- 1:54Speaker 1: a sizzling inch and a half cut, two inch cut
- 2:00Speaker 1: Delmonico Rabbi and an Elijah Craig old fashioned, we were
- 2:11Speaker 1: doing this five years ago, you would have told me,
- 2:17Speaker 1: no way, Vanderbilt goes ten and two. Ever again, you
- 2:23Speaker 1: know what else you would have told me had we
- 2:25Speaker 1: were having dinner either on your back patio or mine,
- 2:30Speaker 1: or at a fabulous steakhouse five years ago. I want
- 2:37Speaker 1: you to think back, Okay, the steaks have just come
- 2:42Speaker 1: off the grill and we've got everything that we need
- 2:48Speaker 1: as far as the sides, we did some shrimp everything.
- 2:55Speaker 1: What else would you have said, Indiana Hoosiers will never
- 2:59Speaker 1: win an national championship in football. So if you don't
- 3:04Speaker 1: think that any SEC team can win in any of
- 3:09Speaker 1: the big three sports, I love you, but you're wrong
- 3:14Speaker 1: because five years ago, at a steak dinner at Coast
- 3:19Speaker 1: Chop House, even though it wasn't there in Harrah's, we
- 3:24Speaker 1: would have both said, well, Vanderbilt will never go ten
- 3:26Speaker 1: and two in football and dominate Alabama. Yeah, they put there,
- 3:34Speaker 1: They put their elbow in Bama's jugular and just slowly
- 3:42Speaker 1: went for the trachea M. Did you ever think that
- 3:46Speaker 1: Vanderbilt would make Bama bleed out on a football field?
- 3:51Speaker 2: That?
- 3:51Speaker 1: Okay, thank you exactly. So five years ago, Jackson Meadows
- 3:57Speaker 1: and I and you are at a steak dinner, perfect
- 4:00Speaker 1: steak sides. Whatever your beverage of choices, whether it's lemonade
- 4:07Speaker 1: or a Tito's Espresso martini, we all say the same thing.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Because guys can't agree on anything when it comes to sports,
- 4:14Speaker 1: we refuse to agree with it on anything. Right, Yeah,
- 4:17Speaker 1: I'm smarter than them. Right this afternoon, when we're throwing
- 4:21Speaker 1: burgers on the grill with our buddies in our neighborhood,
- 4:25Speaker 1: no one's going to be on the same page. Not
- 4:27Speaker 1: that we're not gonna have fun debating it and the banter.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Five years ago, we all say Bannerbilt's never going ten
- 4:36Speaker 1: and two in the Southeastern Conference and the Indiana Hoosiers
- 4:41Speaker 1: will never win a national championship. Definitive statements. We would
- 4:46Speaker 1: have all raised our glasses and toast and said, you
- 4:48Speaker 1: damn right, we got that one right, Yeah, we are
- 4:53Speaker 1: the out of Bound show. We're brought to you by
- 4:55Speaker 1: Juniper Juniper Juniper Jewelry Store, engagement rings, necklaces, bracelet's earrings.
- 5:03Speaker 1: If you want to be a five star rock star.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Juniker Jewelry Store, Highland Colony in Madison. So back to
- 5:11Speaker 1: everything that's going to be on Spotify today. At seven
- 5:13Speaker 1: point thirty this morning, I did twenty four minutes on
- 5:16Speaker 1: basically Portal nil tyn end Calipery. And while Arkansas had
- 5:22Speaker 1: totally whiffed for four years they couldn't get anything going,
- 5:27Speaker 1: they got more money than God, what are we talking about? Tyson, Walmart, JB.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Hunt Stevens, and I'm missing like three more companies. It's weird.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I know it's a rural state. They got billionaires everywhere
- 5:41Speaker 1: and one hundred millionaires coming off those trees everywhere. They
- 5:45Speaker 1: put one hundred million dollars in their football roster right now,
- 5:51Speaker 1: not think twice about it. Shoe box money couldn't get
- 5:56Speaker 1: it going. John Calipari's hired, and in thirty seconds he's
- 6:00Speaker 1: got millions of dollars, like literal seconds, and one thing
- 6:06Speaker 1: else has John Calipari is willing to dial for dollars
- 6:10Speaker 1: he doesn't. After multiple final fours and a national championship
- 6:15Speaker 1: and sending like one hundred and eleven Kentucky players to
- 6:18Speaker 1: the NBA. John Calipari will call it if somebody walks
- 6:25Speaker 1: in his beautiful Fayetteville, Arkansas office this morning as he's
- 6:29Speaker 1: looking at the mountains and the sun shining and his
- 6:34Speaker 1: guys are going to get a workout in down below
- 6:37Speaker 1: on the court, and somebody calls him one of the
- 6:42Speaker 1: other billionaires, one hundred millionaires, John John oh Man, Sarah
- 6:50Speaker 1: and I just got back from vacation and Aspen. Oh,
- 6:52Speaker 1: that's great. Yeah, Well, so I met this guy Van
- 7:00Speaker 1: Arkansas razorback. He just exited a healthcare company. He made
- 7:06Speaker 1: hundreds of millions of dollars. Give me his number. John's
- 7:11Speaker 1: on the phone with him. He didn't even say bye
- 7:14Speaker 1: to the to John Tyson. He hangs up. He's like, John,
- 7:18Speaker 1: I'll call you later. I'll see at the country club.
- 7:20Speaker 1: We can eat those thirty three dollars club sandwiches. Right.
- 7:25Speaker 1: He gets on the phone with Van, who just got
- 7:28Speaker 1: out of making seven hundred million dollars and a healthcare lick.
- 7:35Speaker 1: He's like, I need you on the team. I need
- 7:37Speaker 1: you to be involved with Arkansas razorback football. I'll be
- 7:40Speaker 1: there this afternoon. That's that's the deal. Now we've come
- 7:48Speaker 1: We came up with these sayings starting four and five
- 7:51Speaker 1: years ago. Well you can't, you can't do this, and
- 7:53Speaker 1: you can't do this because some people got in early
- 7:56Speaker 1: in some nonsense. Anybody can win if you have leadership
- 8:01Speaker 1: and you have talented people in place. What happened with
- 8:05Speaker 1: the New York Knicks. Oh, they'll never win. They haven't
- 8:09Speaker 1: won since nineteen seventy three. And then what did Leon
- 8:14Speaker 1: Rose say, hold my tito's martini? And what did world
- 8:21Speaker 1: Wide West say? Who's part of that team? Hold my
- 8:25Speaker 1: Tito's martini? And what did this boy wonder say? Brock Aller,
- 8:35Speaker 1: who is the numbers nerd in professional sports? Now he
- 8:42Speaker 1: is the number one guy. He is the Steve Jobs.
- 8:50Speaker 1: If you look at what he did with the Cleveland
- 8:52Speaker 1: Cavaliers and now what he's done with the New York Knicks.
- 8:56Speaker 1: They assembled a team and then they can to everybody's ass.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So I'm just I think that's something that everybody can get.
- 9:09Speaker 1: It's simple. John Calip Arkansas wasn't going anywhere. Calip Perry
- 9:16Speaker 1: was hired boom. Yeah, it's literally, I mean it transcends
- 9:25Speaker 1: obviously basketball. It was basketball football, but like you mentioned earlier, politics,
- 9:28Speaker 1: he could literally do that. It doesn't matter. John understands
- 9:34Speaker 1: the ability to be a magnet bring people together, make
- 9:37Speaker 1: them believe together, and that what we all want to
- 9:41Speaker 1: we all, I mean, I would think that all of
- 9:43Speaker 1: us want to be a part of something bigger than
- 9:45Speaker 1: we are every day. Isn't that the magic of this
- 9:48Speaker 1: weird life of being a human? I mean, I think
- 9:51Speaker 1: the the what like the number one thing in life
- 9:54Speaker 1: is I want to be a part of something that's
- 9:57Speaker 1: bigger than me. I mean, isn't that, if not, the
- 10:00Speaker 1: coolest thing in life. I want to be a part
- 10:03Speaker 1: of my neighborhood and I want to make sure that
- 10:06Speaker 1: my yard looks good, and I hold myself accountable because
- 10:09Speaker 1: I don't want to be the one that's lagging behind.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I want to be a part of my community. I
- 10:13Speaker 1: want to be a part of the business or whatever sector, industry,
- 10:18Speaker 1: profession I'm in, and I want to be a part
- 10:21Speaker 1: of something bigger than me. And Cal has a gift
- 10:29Speaker 1: to you know, he was doing roster building. Before building
- 10:35Speaker 1: his roster, he did the roster building of what donors
- 10:41Speaker 1: who want to invest in the Arkansas Razorback basketball program.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And Cal had, like many people, Cal has the ability
- 10:49Speaker 1: to say, why don't you come in, Let's be a
- 10:52Speaker 1: part of something that's bigger than all of us. I
- 10:57Speaker 1: don't know if there's something in that what we all
- 11:00Speaker 1: want to do every single day. Oh, I'm a part
- 11:03Speaker 1: of this. My community, my neighborhood, then my community, then
- 11:06Speaker 1: my state, my business. I think that's like gold, that
- 11:11Speaker 1: is the elixir. And Cal people are like, Arkansas can't win.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I thought that was the dumbest thing I've ever heard
- 11:20Speaker 1: in my life. Yeah, there were other fan bases in
- 11:22Speaker 1: the conference that were like, well, Arkansas can't win. I'm
- 11:25Speaker 1: sitting there going what, No, Arkansas didn't have the willpower.
- 11:31Speaker 1: This is it's all willpower. It's not money. In the
- 11:35Speaker 1: SEC it say it with me, it's not money. Anybody
- 11:41Speaker 1: can win. Any of the sixteen schools can win in
- 11:45Speaker 1: any sport. And Cal just he flipped it in. You
- 11:54Speaker 1: know what. His plane, so the Arkansas or the Tyson
- 11:58Speaker 1: plane whatever, whether it was a race Zorbacks or John
- 12:01Speaker 1: Tyson's plane that went to retrieve Cal from Lexington to
- 12:06Speaker 1: fly him to Fayeable. By the time he landed back
- 12:10Speaker 1: in Fayable, half the work was already done by Cal.
- 12:15Speaker 1: He was already working the phone. He had already been
- 12:19Speaker 1: talking to John Tyson about ten people that he needed
- 12:22Speaker 1: to call. Cal also understands that if John Tyson calls
- 12:25Speaker 1: people and says I'm in, then that person is more
- 12:29Speaker 1: inclined to give. It's the same thing in charity. It's
- 12:32Speaker 1: not the person with it's not the VP of fundraising
- 12:36Speaker 1: in the charity. I mean, you do need to be talented,
- 12:38Speaker 1: you do need to cultivate, and you do need to
- 12:40Speaker 1: be a part of the process and at the table.
- 12:43Speaker 1: But it's the ability to have one of your major
- 12:46Speaker 1: donors go to someone else with means and go I'm
- 12:49Speaker 1: in and I'm invested in. Here's why, and I want
- 12:52Speaker 1: you to join the party, get on the bus or
- 12:54Speaker 1: get on the plane and let's do this thing. That's
- 12:58Speaker 1: what Lane did at Ole, Miss Mark Crystabaul did at Miami.
- 13:01Speaker 1: That's what Texas Tech did, and that's what many other SMU.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Would. Would Tommy Tumberville have been like that today?
- 13:11Speaker 1: Yes?
- 13:11Speaker 2: Okay, so there is there are there similarities between him
- 13:14Speaker 2: and cow Uh.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Yes, Oh, Tommy is a is a phenomenal salesman, like
- 13:20Speaker 1: cal like Steve Jobs, like so many others. Warren Buffett,
- 13:25Speaker 1: I mean, you're you do understand that Warren Buffett. When
- 13:27Speaker 1: he when he understood what media could do for his
- 13:30Speaker 1: company and he did media hits, he fully was aware
- 13:33Speaker 1: of what that was doing for Berkshire, right.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 13:37Speaker 1: It's like we talk about Steve Jobs walking up on stage.
- 13:40Speaker 1: He was already being an here. He didn't have to
- 13:43Speaker 1: do it. You see this little thing, this is this
- 13:47Speaker 1: is an iPod? And then what did he do? Oh,
- 13:52Speaker 1: he just showed it to us? No, he didn't. What
- 13:54Speaker 1: did Steve Jobs did that made him, in my opinion,
- 13:58Speaker 1: the most successful business in America and in American history. Yes,
- 14:02Speaker 1: even he's not gonna be worth what Elon was and
- 14:05Speaker 1: so on. But what did he do while he was
- 14:07Speaker 1: on stage while he's got the little iPod in his hand?
- 14:12Speaker 1: I mean, he looked cool, The lighting was cool. It
- 14:15Speaker 1: looks very techy for back then in Bayrea, Silicon Valley.
- 14:20Speaker 1: But what did Jobs do? He wasn't showing you the device.
- 14:26Speaker 1: What was he doing? He was telling you a story?
- 14:30Speaker 1: As Jobs said, nothing beats the power of storytelling and
- 14:34Speaker 1: that's what Caliperi understands. Cal knows how to tell you,
- 14:39Speaker 1: not tell you, share his story so that you'll want
- 14:42Speaker 1: to get on the bus for the plane. And that,
- 14:46Speaker 1: to me is what we all want to do, be
- 14:49Speaker 1: a part of something bigger than who I am or
- 14:52Speaker 1: you are whoever, because to me, that is the magic,
- 14:55Speaker 1: sizzle and elixir in life and was bringing you in
- 15:02Speaker 1: his world of ooh, apple tech, ooh. I may not
- 15:07Speaker 1: be in San Francisco or Silicon Valley, but I'm cool
- 15:11Speaker 1: with this device and so jobs told you a story
- 15:16Speaker 1: on stage along with telling his vendors the story or
- 15:20Speaker 1: sharing his story. And that's why Caliperi is the greatest
- 15:23Speaker 1: example of being a magnet and the ability to build
- 15:30Speaker 1: electricity and connect in literally seconds and minutes of taking
- 15:37Speaker 1: a job and flipping the program financially to where they
- 15:43Speaker 1: couldn't really figure out how to get money to where
- 15:46Speaker 1: it's raining money inside the Arkansas basketball program. This morning
- 15:51Speaker 1: Cal walked in and it's raining money on him. That's
- 15:56Speaker 1: pretty cool, Yeah, because it was not raining prior to that. No,
- 16:03Speaker 1: it should have been sure, but for whatever reason, I
- 16:06Speaker 1: don't know why they got tripped up. They couldn't get,
- 16:09Speaker 1: you know, out of their own way. And that's the deal. Like,
- 16:14Speaker 1: if your athletic department's not out this summer sharing their story,
- 16:20Speaker 1: that's unacceptable they doing. I don't care if you're winning
- 16:24Speaker 1: or losing. You have to share your story every single
- 16:29Speaker 1: day and month to be six whatever entity, private, public,
- 16:35Speaker 1: you have to be sharing your story. You know, it
- 16:41Speaker 1: was funny. I was talking to someone that's tied into
- 16:44Speaker 1: Madison Rigeld Academy that's been a great partner of ours,
- 16:47Speaker 1: both on the academic side and the athletics side. And
- 16:49Speaker 1: as you know, MRA owns Friday night lights on the
- 16:53Speaker 1: number one sports talk radio station in the state of
- 16:55Speaker 1: Mississippi one O five to nine own ESPN. Not a
- 16:58Speaker 1: bad place to have your your games every Friday night,
- 17:01Speaker 1: fifty thousand White FM. You know, got a cool factor
- 17:05Speaker 1: without a doubt, and this person just is not as
- 17:08Speaker 1: tied end And he was like, well, tell me about it.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I said, they get to tell their story every Friday
- 17:14Speaker 1: night for three and a half hours. He went, ah,
- 17:20Speaker 1: yeah that yeah, it's a football game and that's great.
- 17:26Speaker 1: But they're they're telling the MRA story academically and athletically
- 17:30Speaker 1: every Friday Night throughout the season of the whole reason
- 17:34Speaker 1: why when I pitched them to come on. This gives
- 17:38Speaker 1: you forty five hours a year to tell your story
- 17:43Speaker 1: academically and athletically. That's the sizzle and then able to
- 17:49Speaker 1: parlay that into a ninety seven percent retention rate. Now
- 17:52Speaker 1: we've got something going anyway. I well, we're gonna drop
- 18:00Speaker 1: some Spurrier kind of montage audio here in a second.
- 18:05Speaker 1: But the Caliperry thing, all of this is on Spotify.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Tom Lougan Bill did a deep dive into Ole Miss
- 18:11Speaker 1: and Louisville and did a great job. He's he knows
- 18:14Speaker 1: all about the ACC because he was all over the
- 18:16Speaker 1: a SEC network last year and nobody knew more about Miami.
- 18:21Speaker 1: He talked about it before last year. He was on
- 18:23Speaker 1: it and you know, hey, kudos to Christo Baul for
- 18:29Speaker 1: getting to the National Championship Game. But he did a
- 18:32Speaker 1: deep dive into Louisville and Ole Miss. That's on Spotify.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Search out of Bounds with Bo Bounds. Jackson's gonna cut
- 18:38Speaker 1: out the seven thirty Insider hit where we're just gonna
- 18:41Speaker 1: talk Cali Perry and why and what you know, the
- 18:45Speaker 1: Nil story. Anyway, Steve Spurrier was Was he as big
- 18:51Speaker 1: or a bigger trash talker than Lane Kiffen in the
- 18:55Speaker 1: nineteen nineties. This is a montage of several people talking
- 19:00Speaker 1: about Spurrier, including his former players, Chris Storing, Danny warfel Uh,
- 19:06Speaker 1: there's Pat Dooley the journalist. There's his wife, and then
- 19:09Speaker 1: there's some Tennessee players in it that you could tell
- 19:12Speaker 1: did not like hearing every year that you can't spell
- 19:17Speaker 1: let's see citrus without ut. All right, this is all
- 19:22Speaker 1: about Spurrier talking trash in the nineties. We took on
- 19:26Speaker 1: kind of.
- 19:26Speaker 3: His nature, that that swagger, that cockiness that he had.
- 19:30Speaker 2: That we loved every second of it. People they called
- 19:33Speaker 2: him argan kaki. It's this coach man.
- 19:37Speaker 1: It's a confidence, it's a it's a swagger. Before anybody
- 19:40Speaker 1: was really using the word swagger. Now it's it's overused
- 19:43Speaker 1: a little bit, but he was hashtag swagger.
- 19:48Speaker 3: They're playing Oklahoma State, Well they killed and after the game,
- 19:52Speaker 3: Spurrier goes, we knew they weren't very good. Like whoa
- 19:55Speaker 3: honesty from a coach?
- 19:57Speaker 1: At times you say stuff and it's speak of vanity
- 20:02Speaker 1: and it speaks of a lot of humility, ego, paranoid, cocky, arrogant.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Sometimes I dig it guys a little bit.
- 20:10Speaker 1: FSU Freeshoes University. That's a low blow.
- 20:12Speaker 2: What's wrong with that?
- 20:15Speaker 1: DVA DZ. Yeah. I've been accused of saying things right
- 20:21Speaker 1: after games that some people felt like was a knock
- 20:25Speaker 1: to our opponents, and they were interpreted the wrong way.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Never disappointed us.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Freak cattry, isn't it?
- 20:33Speaker 2: Actually?
- 20:34Speaker 3: Anybody can formed their own opinion about everything.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Everybody's got their own opinion. I'm not asking everybody to
- 20:39Speaker 1: take our side. They can take whatever side they feel best.
- 20:44Speaker 3: I remember going to Knoxville in ninety six, went and
- 20:48Speaker 3: talked to a bunch of Tennessee fans about Steve and
- 20:51Speaker 3: it was just nasty. Spur didn't like it. I'd written
- 20:55Speaker 3: that story. He goes, what'd you go find some guys
- 20:57Speaker 3: under a bridge to write that story? And I'm like, no, coach,
- 20:59Speaker 3: people don't like you.
- 21:02Speaker 2: How good you like him? When he making comments like
- 21:04Speaker 2: you can't spell stitchers without ut, like basically saying, yeah,
- 21:08Speaker 2: Tennessee's gonna win eleven games, but they're gonna lose us
- 21:11Speaker 2: and end up in the Sitchers Bowl and we're gonna
- 21:12Speaker 2: be in a national championship and stuff like that. You
- 21:15Speaker 2: can't forget when he'd say something, you know, Freeshoo's university
- 21:19Speaker 2: or something, and people would comment on it, and I
- 21:21Speaker 2: walk behind him and go, well, he really didn't.
- 21:23Speaker 3: He really didn't mean it that way.
- 21:26Speaker 2: And then after a while I realized he did mean
- 21:28Speaker 2: it that way.
- 21:28Speaker 1: He meant it, you know, just the way he said it,
- 21:33Speaker 1: And they loved watching him, if not to like him,
- 21:37Speaker 1: to hate him.
- 21:40Speaker 3: They're playing Arkansas in ninety six.
- 21:43Speaker 1: We're full topic back ask protection join the people, doesn't
- 21:46Speaker 1: feel it's fun. And late in the game.
- 21:50Speaker 3: They let their backup quarterback go a little short touchdown
- 21:53Speaker 3: pass and the spur is running off the field. There's
- 21:58Speaker 3: a there's an Arkansas fan. He's running up. He's screaming
- 22:01Speaker 3: at him.
- 22:01Speaker 1: You running up, thug, you're running up, thug.
- 22:04Speaker 3: We hate you, you spurry. You just looked at him, goes,
