- 0:12Hello friends. It's Sean.
- 0:14Here it is the 17th. It is Wednesday.
- 0:18It is April. It is 2024.
- 0:21It is time for you to put down the business, the hectic,
- 0:25whatever it is that's coming your way or the chilled out day
- 0:29that you may have ahead or that you have enjoyed.
- 0:32And to put that all away and to come before our God and to hear
- 0:36another chapter of His Word as revealed in the book of Second
- 0:40Samuel. And as we read some of these
- 0:44stories, you may be thinking, ohhh, this doesn't seem to have
- 0:47a lot of relevance in my life. All these battles of King David
- 0:50taking on the Ammonites, etcetera, etcetera.
- 0:54And while that may well be true, the thing that each of these
- 0:57stories does have is it is written with its lens.
- 1:01The the, the philtre through which it interprets everything
- 1:04is clearly God centric. And it is a wonderful way that
- 1:09each day as weed engage in these stories, in these chapters of
- 1:12God's word, no matter how irrelevant they may seem, what
- 1:16they are doing is they are attuning the rhythm of our
- 1:20heart. They are shaping the colour that
- 1:23we use to colour the world around us.
- 1:26That it would always be our God who sits at the centre of it.
- 1:30So that as we go through our day and all the different contexts
- 1:33that we face, it's God and His presence in our lives that can
- 1:38continually bubble back up to the centre.
- 1:42So that itself is such a gift, even if even if the story seems
- 1:46to be travelling in a different direction.
- 1:48And we think, oh, what is this all about?
- 1:51So today's chapter is no different.
- 1:54Today's chapter written by this author not as historical
- 1:58document, but to capture God's relationship with his people as
- 2:03they grow as a nation with their new king.
- 2:06So let's read it together, shall we?
- 2:07Let's read together. Second Samuel, chapter 10.
- 2:22Some time after this, King Nahash of the Ammonites died and
- 2:27his son Hainan became king, David said.
- 2:31I am going to show loyalty to Hanan.
- 2:34Just as his father Nahash was always loyal to me, so David
- 2:39sent ambassadors to express sympathy to Hanan about his
- 2:43father's death. But when David's ambassadors
- 2:46arrived in the land of Amon, the Ammonite commanders said to
- 2:50Hainan, their master. Do you really think these men
- 2:53are coming here to honour your father?
- 2:55No. David has sent them to spy out
- 2:58the city so they can come in and conquer it.
- 3:01So Hanan seized David's ambassadors and shaved off half
- 3:05of each man's beard, cut off their robes at the buttocks, and
- 3:09sent them back to David in shame.
- 3:12When David heard what had happened, he sent messages to
- 3:15tell the men stay in Jericho until your beards grow out and
- 3:20then come back, for they felt deep shame because of their
- 3:23appearance. When the people of Amon realised
- 3:26how seriously they had angered David, they sent and hired
- 3:3020,000 Aramian foot soldiers from the lands of Beth, Rehob
- 3:35and Zobah, 1000 from the King of Maka and 12,000 from the land of
- 3:41Tob. When David heard about this, he
- 3:44sent Joab and all his warriors to fight them.
- 3:47The Ammonite troops came out and drew up their battle lines at
- 3:51the entrance of the city gate, while the Arameans from Zoba and
- 3:55Rehab and the men of Tob and Maker positioned themselves to
- 3:59fight in the open fields. When Joab saw that he would have
- 4:03to fight in both the front and the rear, he chose some of
- 4:07Israel's elite troops and placed them under his personal command
- 4:11to fight the Arameans and the fields.
- 4:14He left the rest of the army under the command of his brother
- 4:17Abishai, who was to attack the Ammonites.
- 4:20If the Arameans are too strong for me, then come over and help
- 4:24me, Joab told his brother. And if the Ammonites are too
- 4:28strong for you, I will come and help you.
- 4:30Be courageous. Let us fight bravely for our
- 4:33people and the cities of our God.
- 4:36May the Lords will be done. When Joab and his troops
- 4:40attacked, the Arameans began to run away, and when the Ammonites
- 4:44saw the Arameans running, they ran from Abshire and retreated
- 4:48into the city. After the battle was over, Joe
- 4:52AB returned to Jerusalem. The Arameans now realised that
- 4:56they were no match for Israel, so when they regrouped, they
- 5:00were joined by additional Aramian troops summoned by
- 5:03Hadada Azar from the other side of the Euphrates River.
- 5:07These troops arrived at Hilum under the command of Shobak, the
- 5:11commander of Hadassah's forces. When David heard what was
- 5:15happening, he mobilised all Israel, crossed the Jordan River
- 5:20and led the army to Helium. The Arameans positioned
- 5:24themselves in battle formation and fought against David, but
- 5:27again the Arameans fled from the Israelites.
- 5:31This time, David's forces killed 700 charioteers and 40,000 foot
- 5:36soldiers, including Showback, the commander of the army.
- 5:40When all the kings allied with Hadasa saw that they had been
- 5:44defeated by Israel, they surrendered to Israel and became
- 5:48their subjects. After that the Arameans were
- 5:51afraid to help the Ammonites. Lord, let these troops of Israel
- 6:06armies be an example to us as they go into battle.
- 6:12They don't do it for personal glory.
- 6:14They don't do it for gain. They don't do it for territory.
- 6:18They'd do it for the cities of their God.
- 6:20That your will would be done. Our Lord, as we go into the
- 6:25challenges of our days, let our motivation be that your will
- 6:30would be done, that your Kingdom would become a reality, that
- 6:34your grace would be evident not only in US but in our actions
- 6:40and in the the wake that we leave behind us as we move
- 6:44through the day. Lord, you are the cause worth
- 6:50fighting for. You are the goal of our lives.
- 6:55You are the wind that fills our sails and keeps us going.
- 6:59And you are the prize at the end of it all.
- 7:03And we love you. And we are so grateful that you
- 7:06draw us into your family. You wrap your arms around us and
- 7:11you love us, and so we place you on the highest, the highest
- 7:17throne in our lives. And we pray all these things
- 7:21through the saving name of Jesus, OHP man.
