- episode 9- raw === Logan Newsom: [00:00:00] wanted to welcome everyone back to the Drenchline. We, , are here to record what we feel like is potentially maybe episode nine. Still at the beautiful Corpus Christi, Texas. Had an opportunity to come down here and spend some time getting some content, get some info and feedback from some ag teachers that are down here at, at ag teachers conference. Logan Newsom: So setting is, is a little different today, for what we've got recording. But we wanted to sit down, and the last few weeks, the last few episodes, however many we've had, , we've had a tremendous amount of questions that have come in on the website, guys that have submitted stuff, folks that have submitted stuff. Logan Newsom: We wanted to take an opportunity just to kinda dig through some of those and maybe kinda answer some of the questions that, that you folks have submitted that you would like to, I guess, have us answer and some insight from maybe some of the mistakes that we made or kinda what we feel like has worked the best within each one of our respected programs. Logan Newsom: So as we kinda continue and work [00:01:00] through that obviously a little bit of housekeeping. Continue and send that stuff in. You guys got questions, feel free to shoot them to us at drenchline.com. That's kinda what we call home base. We also have comments amongst- Yeah ... you know, on social media, so maybe there's a little bit of insight that you can grasp from that. Logan Newsom: And always, we'd love to have you like, subscribe, share, leave a review. Reach out with anything that you feel like you would like to see us potentially work on from an educational standpoint or visit about or hit on. And at the same time, we're just gonna kinda continue working through, you know, what I would call this, this year and this, this feeding program and kinda some things of where, where we're at within, uh, each one of our programs and kinda what we're seeing at the house. Logan Newsom: So we'll get started. looks like we're gonna start off here with some of our first questions. Katie's done a great job of kinda summarizing them, or categorizing them to where we can maybe focus on some specific topics as we kinda work through. So if we don't answer your question- [00:02:00] Rest easy. Logan Newsom: There's no reason to put us on blast. We will get to it. we've probably already had enough to do two full episodes. Sam Silvers: Yeah, for sure. Logan Newsom: so as we get started here, we'll kinda give you guys a, a shout-out to whoever submitted it, and then, uh, kinda each one of us just kinda, kinda work through. there's obviously gonna be some differences- Yeah Logan Newsom: two programs that, you know, have some, have some variation, just in terms of maybe, uh, supplements and, you know, base feeds. So we'll kinda talk through it and, uh, see what we can help you guys out with. So Sam, you wanna- Yeah ... hammer away with Danielle's first question? Sam Silvers: First question from Danielle, "When should beginners start supplements? Sam Silvers: How do protein and fat levels affect your feeding decisions?" I think that is two, two-part question and I think that is a really great question. and I've probably said this before, at Silvers Livestock or at home, the Silvers family I should say, we're, we're not big on supplements. Sam Silvers: We don't feed a lot of [00:03:00] supplements. I mean, it w- we're not the type of people that has a little bit of feed and 47 different supplements. now s- something that we will always start with on top of our base feed from the beginning is y- you know, we always try to have, , Purify in there. I think that's, that's a, that's a great just general health, and I don't think we probably talk about that product enough. Sam Silvers: general health to get them lambs going a- and goats too. just things headed in the right direction. It does so many good things all in one. Um, you know, that's a supplement we'll start with from the beginning. and then we slowly start integrating some other things. You know, maybe, uh, maybe some Stretch or, or Belly Down, something like that to kinda try to get them used to that and start creating some, some lower flank feel. Sam Silvers: I think it's a process. I don't think that's something you can just i- incorporate the last month and expect great results in there. Logan Newsom: Sure. Yeah, I think again, you know, Sam hit on it. Danielle, great point, you know, great question. I think the [00:04:00] biggest thing is, you know, when should beginners start supplements? Logan Newsom: I, I don't, I don't think there's a beginners or there's a, a, experienced level of when you should start supplements. Like Sam said, we're big on building the house before you can play in it. We like to feed feed, uh, and probably limit our supplements. Sam hit on the Purifry product. We love that product. Logan Newsom: We think it does a lot of, a lot of good things. we wanna focus on immunity. We wanna focus on gut health. we wanna focus on those things getting off to a fast, good, healthy start. And then, you know, to kinda hit on that, you know, how do protein and fat levels affect your feeding decisions, I don't think that necessarily affects feeding decisions. Logan Newsom: I'm just gonna say that that's gonna be very individual sheep and goat specific. Maybe some of those ones that are shapely but a little harder bodied and, you know, need a little more fat and finish to be smoother, obviously we wanna take that into consideration. Some of those that, you know, stereotypically speaking, let's say Southdowns, you know, that might be a little easier [00:05:00] fleshing, a little more practical in their makeup, yeah, we wanna try to have our protein maybe a little higher on those and kinda keep those maybe on the tr- trimmer, leaner side. Logan Newsom: Yeah. so I think each one of those, uh, you know, are gonna be very dependent on your sheep. Um, obviously that's where, you know, I feel like Us with our customers, you guys with your customers, um, if you don't have what you feel like is, you know, a local resource there that can help you with some of those feeding decisions and you are, you know, a little newer to this, reach out to where you got that thing. Logan Newsom: You know, find you, you know, your breeder that, that, uh, that you bought that sheep from. Ask them. Most of those guys are, without question ready to help and, you know, wanna make sure that you have success. So that's where we like to step in and, you know, offer some suggestion on- ... you know, what that looks like in terms of that feeding curve. Logan Newsom: Yeah. And, and I think about, I go back to, to my, my career at, at BioZyme and, you know, when we're talking about, uh, as a company developing new [00:06:00] supplements or things like of that nature, it, you know, it, in show animals, uh, specifically sheep and goats, there's always two... To me, if we break it all the way down to its core, there's always two things that we're trying to do. Logan Newsom: We either trying to get 'em fat or we're trying to pull fat off of 'em. So- I would say that's fair. Yep ... that, that's our, that's our main goals- ... if we wanna, if we wanna get down to the core of it. And y- you know, the second part of this question from Danielle was how do protein and fat levels- ... affect your feeding decisions? Logan Newsom: Well, it, it does obviously. You know, if he's too skinny, obviously we're gonna try to up, up our fat levels with some kind of fat supplement. I- if they are too fat, then obviously we're gonna up their protein level to try to help burn more fat. For sure. So I, you know, I, I think it's, it's kind of answers itself a little bit, right? Logan Newsom: Yep. Um, I would guess knowing the amounts is the hard part, right? Um, and to me it's a lot like golf or fishing. It's, it's feel, right? [00:07:00] Yep. You, you g- you've gotta f- not actually feel the texture of the feed, but it, it's a feel for me. Like, eh, I think this guy's getting a little chubby- We got a little chubby Logan Newsom: maybe he needs a quarter pound of, of Skull- Back, yeah ... or, or Starglo- Yep, yep ... or something like that. Yeah. Flip-flop it. Or- Yo-yo it ... or you were talking about our, our, our Southdowns. You know, our Southdowns are still young and, and relatively green, but they're already... All of them are already on Starglo right now. Logan Newsom: Right. We keep protein in their diet from, from day one 'cause I don't want 'em getting that internal fat and getting mushy on me. Yep, yep. So some- you know, kind of a little bit of a, you know, almost preventative, you know- Yeah ... can sometimes kinda be, and just kinda thinking about where you're at in, in terms of that, um, you know, in terms of that feeding curve and also where you're headed. Logan Newsom: You know, if we're sitting here talking about, you know, what that looks like in June, um, and you know that you're trying to get that thing to San Anton, yeah, you know, try to, try to make some of those adjustments early on so that you know that feeding curve and you don't end up in a position where those things are chunky and fat and mature and, you know, you kind [00:08:00] of, you kind of missed your runway. Logan Newsom: Yeah. So, um, next question. Clara asked, "How do I become a better feeder? What supplements actually make a difference?" Oh, man. Y- you know- That's still something that I'm trying to do every day is, you know, how, how do I become a better feeder, right? I, I don't think, uh, I don't think you can ever settle and just say, "I know how to feed sheep and goats. Logan Newsom: I'm done, and I've got it all figured out." we still bounce- We've talked about this in, in earlier episodes. We still bounce ideas off each other and, and try to keep up with, with new things that are coming out. A new product comes out, I'll call Logan, "Hey, what do you think about this? You think this actually works?" Logan Newsom: , So supplements that make a difference, you know, you definitely need to, I, I would say read the ingredients, look the ingredients up and see what they do and see if they make sense. Yeah. Makes sense, and then, uh, yeah, I think that's a, I think that's a good point. And, I think there's probably a lot of folks that can fall into that deal of, "Oh, [00:09:00] I'm feeding X product because so and so said that, um, you know, it was a, it was a good product," or whatever that looks like. Logan Newsom: But, if you'll kinda just think for yourself just a little bit, think about what you wanna do, be a little objective, like you can, you can make drastic s- improvements, um, from your ability as a feeder rather quickly. I do think that there's probably some, um, you know, trial and error- Yeah Logan Newsom: that goes into that, you know, becoming a better feeder. Sam Silvers: Definitely. Logan Newsom: Uh, like, like Sam said, you know, like the screw-ups that we've made are definitely, you know, some of the things that have made us for where we're at, and I can promise you, if you don't think you're still doing those on the daily, then, like Sam said, if you're, uh, if you're one of those that thinks that you're there, sit and watch 'cause somebody's fixing to beat your ass. Sam Silvers: Yeah, exactly. A- and you know what supplements make a difference? There's a million of them out there, and they all probably do something. Uh, but again, you know, I'm gonna kinda relate it back to Danielle's [00:10:00] question earlier is, uh, find a supplement that burns fat good, that you, that you like and you feel comfortable with. Sam Silvers: Find you a supplement that, that puts on fat and, and does well with that. And then, you know, probably some leg wool supplement of some sort. Logan Newsom: Of some kind, yep. Sam Silvers: Um, those three I think are the key, or I would call cornerstones that you need to worry about, um, a- as far as supplements. All the other stuff, um, you know, there's a lot of unicorn dust and foo-foo fluff out there. Sam Silvers: Again, read the ingredients, look up those ingredients and see if they make sense. And if there's a supplement out there that doesn't list the ingredients, A, that, that's illegal, and B, it probably not... You probably don't need to be- Logan Newsom: Probably not what you're after. Yeah. What do we got next? Uh, Amy? Amy. Logan Newsom: Amy. Amy wants to know what your go-to products for fill, flank, and drenching are. Nice. Okay? yeah, so I think, a little bit, we could probably call that a little bit of a [00:11:00] two-part question. Yeah. So if we're talking kinda fill and flank, you know, in my mind, that's something that, that isn't necessarily taken care of at the show. Logan Newsom: That's something we wanna try to probably address if we've got one of those that, you know, we talked about it before. Maybe a little harder doing, maybe a little skinnier belly, uh, maybe one of those, we wanna just kinda see a little punchier through their center body, whatever that looks like. that's obviously something we wanna f- you know, feed on and, and kinda try to have addressed before we leave for the show. Logan Newsom: So if we're just talking, you know, Sam mentioned them before, Belly Down, um, Stretch, uh, some of your fill and fiber products are definitely gonna be conducive to that. we're big believers in hay. Um, we feed a lot of hay at the house. Mm. Um, so you know, I think a lot of that, that you're talking in terms of fill, flank, maybe underline quality, uh, some of that kinda stuff is definitely can be contributed to, you know, the animal and the feeding curve and just kinda all of that. Logan Newsom: if we're talking drenching, you know, and kinda getting [00:12:00] that, that maybe you lost, you felt like whenever you sheared, uh, you were in a really, really good spot, and then you made an eight-hour trip to Houston to go to the stock show, got down there and you're like, "Man, this thing's kinda emptied out on me. Logan Newsom: We don't have near as much as, you know, what we had whenever we left," I think that's probably where, without question, you know, the drenching, uh, you know, kinda comes into play. Mm-hmm. That's what we're trying to do. I've always thought that- Our drenching idea or goal was to get back to where we were the night we sheared. Logan Newsom: The night you shear, you're like, "Man, I think I got one. I feel- Looks good ... good about it. We look good." And then we're kinda always trying to chase back to get back to that point. our drench, our base drench at, at, at stock shows is ShowRite Swell. Yeah. Um, we'll utilize some other products along with it, you know, depending on what we're kinda trying to do, but that's one that we've found from a base standpoint, to do us a really good job from a hydration standpoint, from a fluff and a bloom standpoint, as well as, you [00:13:00] know, kinda achieving that feel and, you know, fullness that, that we wanted to kinda get back to what they looked like that first night whenever we sheared them. Sam Silvers: Yep. I- and I'm, I'm with you on that. y- you know, ShowRite Stretch, Essential Belly Down. and then far as drenching, you know, we're, we're... I s- still think we're, we're big components of water, just good clean water, um, and Swell. Swell's a great product and we use a lot of Swell too. So... A- and I would say don't, don't overthink it. Sam Silvers: I had this conversation with, with a guy from Minnesota last week, um, about drenching. You know, he's asking, "What do you do?" A- and, and I don't think there's any big secret to it. To me, it, it's on a pendulum or a bell curve, right? A- and you said this to me a couple years ago, you know, we're, we're constantly yo-yoing back and forth between y- you know, like Swell and, and water, and it's, it's about hitting that pendulum just right- Yeah Sam Silvers: right at the time that they're about to go to the ring, right? For sure. 'Cause if we, if we hit 'em with too much Swell for [00:14:00] too long, then they're gonna soften up on you, maybe sour a gut, not feel real well, not look real good. Um, so we might pull back and go to some water for a little while and get it back right. Sam Silvers: so y- you know, pendulum swinging there. Yeah, absolutely. But yeah. Yeah, it's a, it's a, um, it's a sh- I'm not gonna say it's a shot in the dark, but you know, it's definitely... I mean, we're kinda... There's no like, "Hey, we're gonna write all this down, and if you'll do this at this time and this at that time- Yeah Sam Silvers: man, when you get to the ring, you're gonna be in business." A- and I would, I would be... I, I would feel awful if I didn't mention this too. I, I would say Gold Dust is another great product. Absolutely, yeah. Um, Gold Dust is something we use m- a lot of and religiously. So you know, f- feeding field flank, I, I would say Stretch, uh, Essential Belly Down. Sam Silvers: Drenching, uh, we're gonna use water, we're gonna use Swell, and we're gonna use Gold Dust. Logan Newsom: Yep, I would agree. obviously kinda, you know, goat customers that are listening, um, without question, you know, Gold Dust would be the one that, you know, kinda takes the cake on majority of the, majority of the drenching that occurs on, on [00:15:00] that, uh, on that forefront. Logan Newsom: So yeah, good question, Amy. That's what, that's what we do. Right, wrong, or indifferent, that is where we are at Uh, let's see what Kenley's got. Kenley wants to know, what do you do when sheep start sorting feed or go off feed? Yeah, I... Sam Silvers: This is a great question too. Don't start chasing different feeds and different rations. Sam Silvers: You've got something going on there. I, I see this time and time again. Somebody's, sheep or goat will start sh- sorting or going off feed a little bit, and the first thing they wanna do is change the feed. I, I don't think that's a good idea. if they're sorting feed, I would say maybe back up on your amount a little bit. Sam Silvers: Um, you're offering too much and they're getting too picky. Uh, uh, that works well for us. Logan Newsom: Absolutely. Sam Silvers: we'll, we'll just back down. So if I'm putting a, a, a pound of feed in there and I, I notice they're sorting the, the mineral pellet off or something like that, I'll back it up for a little bit, three-quarter, and then I'll, I'll, I'll go up slowly, slowly, slowly. Sam Silvers: So I would say- Logan Newsom: Kind of get them hungry and- Sam Silvers: [00:16:00] Yeah, get them hungry ... you know, a little bit. Logan Newsom: Yeah, kind of get them a little more aggressive at the feed trough. Sam Silvers: Yep. Yeah. I, I... That's what we do. Logan Newsom: Yeah. We- we're, we're the same way and, and we're also big on competition, you know? Sure. And so if those things are... If they're in a pen or you're, or you're individually feeding and you notice those things are kind of being a little more picky, um, a lot of times we'll bounce them over to, you know, pen three for us, and that's more of a long trough situation, and let those things kind of bang around and have a little competition and see if they can't, you know, just kind of figure out that, "Hey, if I don't eat, something else is gonna eat." Sam Silvers: Get their mind right. Logan Newsom: Yeah, kind of like the deal of, you know, uh, if you're, you know, grew up in a house full of boys and you don't, you don't hurry up and scarf down everything you can, there's probably not gonna be, uh, any seconds left. So that's always been something that we've kind of tried to, tried to do. Logan Newsom: I mean, we're, we're pretty big on, on group feeding and, you know, not, not necessarily from the standpoint of having six or eight in a pen, but, you know, two or three of those things and kind of let them fight a little bit and, uh, let them know that they need to kind of eat whenever it's time and- Sam Silvers: We... I, I didn't come from a, a family of boys. Sam Silvers: I came from a family of girls. I'm the only boy out of, like, four or five sisters and, uh, y- [00:17:00] you know, so it wasn't food for us, but it was, uh, "You better get your butt in that shower or you're not gonna get any hot water." Logan Newsom: Yeah, same situation, for sure Sam Silvers: Okay, good. Logan Newsom: Uh, Kinley, that's, um, that's kinda what we do. Logan Newsom: Yeah, same, same scenario, same situation. Uh, nothing crazy there. Stay patient with it. I would say that's probably the biggest deal. Stay patient with it. make sure there's not something underlying that could be, you know, the reason for that. But don't, don't, don't scrap your whole plan and your whole model and all of a sudden try to do something different. Sam Silvers: Yeah. Okay, so this kinda g- goes a little off-feeding here, but Jordan asked, "Can you cover monitoring health, giving injections, and building a basic doctoring protocol?" And I think we went over a lot of this in episode maybe two? Two probably. Yep. Three. Three. Two or three. Two or three, something like that. Sam Silvers: Yeah, early on there. Um, checking 'em, hey, checking 'em daily, taking time and going in their... Are their ears down? Is there snot hanging out their nose? If there is, the first thing you need to do, what'd I say? Buy a thermometer. Where's the thermometer go? In the butt. Logan Newsom: Sam definitely [00:18:00] did say that. Sam Silvers: In the butt. Logan Newsom: He wanted to be clear with everybody on where the thermometer goes. Sam Silvers: Check, check the temperature. That's your first indicator. Uh, giving injections, y- you know, uh, you, you need to read your labels. The label is the law, as they say. is it a sub-Q injection? Is it an intramuscular injection? Is it intranasal? Sam Silvers: Uh, there's a bunch of different things there. So, uh, r- read, read that. Consult with your veterinarian. Get a good relationship with a veterinarian. We went over that in episodes two and three. Um, a- and a basic doctoring protocol's hard to put down because I think Sam Silvers: That every situation's different. Logan Newsom: Absolutely, yep. Sam Silvers: There's so many different things that can happen, right? Logan Newsom: Yeah, different situations, different environments, uh, how long maybe that animal's been, you know, dealing with whatever those underlying issues are, you know, whatever those symptoms are. Like, there's not a- You know, I'd say this probably goes a little bit in line with kind of the drenching deal. Logan Newsom: Like, you can't just say, "Hey, if this is what you have, give X amount of this." X amount. You know? Like, it just, it just doesn't work. You just gotta be aware of it and kind of think [00:19:00] about what you've got. And, and again, you know, like Sam said, make sure and make sure you got some sort of relationship with those guys. Logan Newsom: Like, whoever that, whoever that vet is, whether it's a local vet or whether it's somebody that you know is maybe a... you know, has a traveling practice, or somebody that's two or three hours away. Like, a lot of times those guys might be able to diagnose some stuff over the phone. Um, you know, you can kind of say, "Hey, this thing's temperature is at this, this is what his symptoms are," and a lot of those guys can probably, you know, tell you, "Hey, start here and let's kind of see if we improve or what we're doing." Logan Newsom: But you have to have someone in that capacity so that you can, number one, get the antibiotics and the- Mm-hmm ... and the medicines that you need, um, to doctor those things, but also just to, to bounce those ideas off of. Those guys- Sure ... for the most part, are gonna see a lot of the things, you know, on a, on a wide scale and know kind of what the industry's dealing with or what the year looks like, or if it's been cool and a little wetter, then maybe we're fighting this. Logan Newsom: If it's been hot and dry, maybe we're fighting this. But you gotta have some sort of relationship with those guys to make sure that, um, make sure that you, you [00:20:00] can- Yeah ... treat those animals accordingly. Sam Silvers: And, and you know, I could easily sit here a- a- and, and tell you what your basic medicine cabinet needs to be, um, m- but I... Sam Silvers: you know, I'm not a licensed veterinarian. Y- you're gonna need a vet script for anything that I tell you. y- you'll need to sit down and talk with your vet with that. But, you know, some, just some off-the-topic things that I think you need, you know, a, a bottle of LA-200 you're gonna need. Um, just a bottle of penicillin's great to have. Sam Silvers: y- a bottle of Nuflor, probably a bottle of Baytril. you're definitely gonna need a bottle of dexamethasone. Yep. I think that's really great to have. Yep. Um, and, and probably, probably some sort of, you know, pain reliever, uh, uh, Banamine, something like that. Yeah. Um, all those will need a script. You'll need to talk to your veterinarian and go through that protocol, but those are the basics, what I would call the basics you're gonna need. Logan Newsom: Yeah. Yeah, and I think that kind of checks a lot of those off. And, um, yeah, you're gonna have something for, something for pain relief and fever, something that's, you know, can, uh, work as an [00:21:00] anti-inflammatory, and then obviously, you know, a, a passel of some antibiotics that- Sure ... that can help fight some of that stuff, so. Sam Silvers: So Adam wants to know what's the best bedding. Well, Adam, I don't know that I have found the best bedding yet. We've tried just about everything. Um, we've tried the really expensive shavings before. We seem to, uh, where we live in, in, in the Western Hill Country/West Texas, uh, the wind blows shavings out of our barn faster than we can put 'em down. Sam Silvers: I was about to say, I, I feel like those things don't make it, uh, a day and they're on the other side of Junction. Yeah. And, and I think that, uh, I think flies really like shavings for some reason. I feel like they get under 'em and hatch. I don't, I don't know. The... And that, that's a Jurahee... You know, Jurahee seems to think that, and I, you know, I tend to believe her. Sam Silvers: It seems like when we've had those, we've had more flies, even though we have a fly system. Um, at our house, we really like the, the, um, the [00:22:00] good, um, cedar fiber bedding. Yep. Central Cedar Fiber. It still has a lot of oil in it, has a good smell to it. I think it kinda keeps some of that... pests away. Logan Newsom: Uh, yeah, that's always been... Logan Newsom: You know what I mean? That's kinda been... You know, I think you talked to some of the cattle guys. I mean, that's, cedar fiber bedding has always kinda been one of those things that's, you know- Yeah ... appealing and a, you know, maybe from a, you know, fly resistance- Yeah ... pest resistance, whatever you wanna call it. Sam Silvers: I do, I do think, you know, the really high-end shavings do, they, they do help keep the sheep clean and the goats cleaner. I think they stay cleaner and look nicer. Um, but in the, you know, in the wintertime, like I said, our barn's pretty open. Um, in the wintertime w- we'll, we'll use straw. We'll bed down with straw in there to keep 'em warm and have 'em a nice warm place to sit and dry. Sam Silvers: I mean- Yeah ... a dry place to sit, so. Yeah. Logan Newsom: Our, our deal is, um, we do use, you know, the, the, the higher... what we feel like is, you know, the higher quality shavings. Um, our [00:23:00] deal's a little more enclosed. I mean, that's just kinda the way the barn and, and everything is kinda set up. And so, uh, we do that. We try to clean those things out every, uh... Logan Newsom: We do a deep clean every two weeks and we freshen 'em up mid, you know, midweek or whatever, um, the week in between. Um, I'm not saying it's perfect. Um, we've tried the cedar. Uh, we tried it on some of the goats. We've got it down right now in some of the goat pens. So, um, I don't know. I think probably a, you know, similar situation. Logan Newsom: I wouldn't say that we've found the perfect scenario. Uh, felt like those, you know, Suncoast or, you know, the ones that are a little coarser- Hard ... hard. Yeah. Like, we try to avoid those. We try to use, you know, something that's gonna be absorbent, something that's gonna be clean. Sam Silvers: Are those, like, Champion shaving? Sam Silvers: I mean, what do they call those? Logan Newsom: Champions are, Champions are good. Yeah. Thoroughbreds are some ones that some of the... You know, we're probably pretty fortunate where we're at in the Texas Panhandle because- The pig guys up there- The pig guys usually ... all use, and they're, they're shaving snobs, so you're gonna get- Sam Silvers: Plenty full Logan Newsom: yeah, you're gonna get [00:24:00] some of the good ones. But one of the big things that we try with us being predominantly shavings based is whenever we do the deep clean, um, and all we do, I wouldn't necessarily say it's like some super deep clean. We clean everything down to, you know, the hard, fresh dirt or whatever. Logan Newsom: Um, when we put new shavings down, we spray them with a Pine-Sol mix that has Prolate in it also. Sam Silvers: Okay. Logan Newsom: And, you know, I've, I've, I never ran into anything, but we've always done that. But I've always, you know, heard the horror stories that mites and lice and, you know- Mm-hmm ... any of that stuff can kind of live in, in those, uh, in those shavings. Logan Newsom: And so we started doing that, I guess probably whenever Graham started showing, and just kind of always been a part of our routine. And I also think it kind of helps a little bit from the standpoint of those things maybe not wanting to nibble at them or chew on them or eat the shavings or whatever. So that's what we do. Logan Newsom: Uh, you know, Sam and them do something different. We know, I know a lot of guys that, you know, that we have that also feed on, you know, dirt pens. Logan Newsom: Yeah, most of the summer we- Logan Newsom: And, you know, kind of rake [00:25:00] and clean, keep stuff fairly clean and- Sam Silvers: Most of the summer we do that, we do that as well. Um, we got a really good deal on some cedar, cedar, Central Cedar. Sam Silvers: We ordered some totes and split it between me and, uh, Rader. Um, so that's what we're using now. But a lot of times we just, we just rake and clean the dirt out, um, every day, and that's what they're on. . So this is gonna- Logan Newsom: Looks like the, uh- We've got, we've got the, uh, the happy hour crowd coming in here. Logan Newsom: we're, we're filming right here at the Lively Beach Condos, which is where we're staying Sam Silvers: All the fraternity brothers just showed up Logan Newsom: And, uh, yeah, everybody's showing in, so I'm sure at some point Sam's gonna probably have to show them how to do a, you know, the perfect can opener. Sam Silvers: I will not get in that pool. Sam Silvers: There's too many people that urinate in a pool, and that's... Pools are not my thing. Logan Newsom: Like I said, als- obviously at the Lively Beach, there's no lifeguard, no fun to be had. Sam Silvers: You always pick... Like, this is wh- I- I should have known that you would pick the spot where, like, the college kids hang out and party. Logan Newsom: Yeah, I'm, I'm still, I'm still young and thriving [00:26:00] and- Sam Silvers: I don't know about thriving Logan Newsom: growing and learning. Sam Silvers: Learning Logan Newsom: I'm still in that mode, man. Come on. Like, I'm not- Sam Silvers: Not, not me ... Logan Newsom: I'm not, I'm not in that no fun zone, go to bed at 7:45 like you did last night, not even wanting... Poor Jurahee. I mean- Sam Silvers: It was 9:30 Logan Newsom: ... down here on vacation, wanting to go- He- ... went out for a nice dinner, a nightcap. I guess you had a nice- Sam Silvers: We had a nice dinner Logan Newsom: you had a nice dinner. You had a nice dinner. Keith Mock obviously took care of him on the, uh, on the dinner portion, but- Sam Silvers: It was great Logan Newsom: ... I've heard stories of Jurahee singing karaoke in- Sam Silvers: Mm-hmm ... Logan Newsom: downtown Corpus Christi, and that is all I wanna be about. Sam Silvers: I c- I can't let her out very often. I gotta keep her locked up, you know. Logan Newsom: That's true. She'll, she'll, she'll- She'll go off having fun ... Sam Silvers: yeah, we'll have to go get her out of the dog pound. Logan Newsom: We will, uh, we will wrap back up, and we will, um, finish with some of these questions that you guys have submitted. There's a lot of stuff that, uh, kinda goes into, you know, maybe some everyday stuff, showmanship and training, maybe some exercise programs. Logan Newsom: We talked a little bit about some leg wool routines and kinda what we're doing. Um, and again, if we didn't get to your [00:27:00] question on this one, don't worry. We're gonna keep hammering through these things. There has been a ton of them that have been submitted, so we appreciate all those, but we're just gonna kinda, kinda tre- keep trying to knock them out as best we can and, um, and get, you know, maybe some of that information that... Logan Newsom: I think it's funny that sometimes you see some of these questions and, you know, you kinda see the ones that people have submitted, and it's not really something that maybe you would think to ask, but then you like, you read it and you start processing it, and you think and you're like, "Dang, that... Like, we're dealing with a little bit of that at home," or- Yeah Logan Newsom: "Hey, that's a, that's a good idea," or, "Hey, that's a good point," or whatever. So I think that hopefully there'll be some guys that are listening that on this episode might be, uh, might be something that just kinda resonates a little bit and something that maybe you can, you can take back into each one of your own operations and find something that can be beneficial.
