Speaker 2: early voting does get underway today in West Virginia. More

Speaker 2: on that coming up. We're going to be joined in
• 2:13
Speaker 2: studio this morning by Delegate Andy Shamlin, who serves from
• 2:16
Speaker 2: District 59. Also, Patty Hartman, from the Small Business Administration
• 2:20
Speaker 2: is going to stop by. As you know, a lot
• 2:22
Speaker 2: of West Virginia declared a federal disaster area due to flooding.
• 2:26
Speaker 2: The SBA has set up shop here in Charleston, hoping
• 2:28
Speaker 2: to help some folks out, so she'll join us to
• 2:30
Speaker 2: talk about that. Also, Sergeant Travis Bales will be here
• 2:33
Speaker 2: from the Charleston Police Department. We have a first responders
• 2:36
Speaker 2: pickleball tournament coming up. We'll get into all that, plus
• 2:38
Speaker 2: your calls and texts are always welcome. Welcome to the
• 2:42
Speaker 2: show now, the lovely, the talented. You love her. It's
• 2:44
Speaker 2: Millie Snyder. How you doing, my friend?
• 2:46
Speaker 5: I'm fine, and please don't Stop that introduction. That was very,
• 2:50
  Speaker 5: very good.
• 2:50
Speaker 2: I got to start because I said, Emily, I got
• 2:52
Speaker 2: a loaded up show and I have to get this
• 2:54
Speaker 2: in here because I know you're going to want to
• 2:55
Speaker 2: say something about this as well because you're a nice
• 2:57
Speaker 2: person that way. Our very own Chris Lawrence, host of
• 3:01
Speaker 2: the Morning News, West Virginia Outdoors. He's our archivist here
• 3:05
Speaker 2: with Metro News, does everything. Very proud of Chris. He
• 3:10
Speaker 2: picked up the Marconi Award in New York City last
• 3:13
Speaker 2: night for Small Market Personality of the Year. Congratulations to him.
• 3:18
  Speaker 2: The entire nation.
• 3:20
  Speaker 6: Wow.
• 3:20
Speaker 2: And we think of Charleston as being a large market,
• 3:24
Speaker 2: you know, in West Virginia. But by its standards nationwide,
• 3:28
Speaker 2: it is a small market.
• 3:29
  Speaker 7: Mr.
• 3:30
Speaker 2: Lawrence, Mr. I get here every morning between 3.30 and
• 3:33
Speaker 2: 4 a.m. and leave sometime about 12 hours later, six
• 3:36
Speaker 2: days a week. High school football on Friday night, as
• 3:38
Speaker 2: I said, West Virginia Outdoors picked up a Marconi Award
• 3:42
Speaker 2: in New York City, the Edison Ballroom last night.
• 3:44
  Speaker 5: Oh, my.
• 3:46
Speaker 2: As small market radio personality of the year.
• 3:50
Speaker 5: Keep doing what he's doing. That's wonderful. Wow, and such
• 3:53
  Speaker 5: great recognition.
• 3:54
Speaker 2: Yes, it is. It's kind of a big deal. I
• 3:57
Speaker 2: understand that you just celebrated a birthday.
• 3:59
Speaker 5: I did. And you want to keep the number quiet?
• 4:01
Speaker 2: I'm not going to say anything if you don't want
• 4:03
  Speaker 2: to say anything.
• 4:03
  Speaker 5: But I don't look it.
• 4:05
  Speaker 2: It doesn't matter.
• 4:05
  Speaker 6: No.
• 4:06
Speaker 5: But yes, I did. October 19th, Monday. And I'm very
• 4:09
Speaker 5: happy to tell the world, if they get world's at
• 4:12
Speaker 5: all interested. Then I just celebrated number 84.
• 4:15
  Speaker 2: 84.
• 4:16
  Speaker 5: And I don't look and I don't feel it. And
• 4:18
Speaker 5: I don't know what an 84-year-old is supposed to do.
• 4:20
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 4:21
Speaker 5: And I really feel out of place when I'm around
• 4:23
  Speaker 5: old people.
• 4:25
Speaker 2: Your calling, though, in life has been to do what
• 4:29
Speaker 2: you have been doing.
• 4:30
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 4:30
Speaker 2: And that's whether it's. With the Mediterranean lifestyle now or
• 4:34
Speaker 2: what you did before that, your calling is to help people.
• 4:36
Speaker 5: Yes, help people help themselves because really no leader in
• 4:40
Speaker 5: any capacity can lose anybody's weight for them and help
• 4:44
Speaker 5: them become healthy. But there has to be the teaching
• 4:48
Speaker 5: element and hopefully that people want to get on that bandwagon.
• 4:54
Speaker 5: And the Mediterranean mindset, which is I'm now doing it,
• 4:58
Speaker 5: it's hard to believe, for 10 years, we meet at
• 5:00
Speaker 5: the American Job Center on 426 Leon Sullivan Way Thursday morning.
• 5:07
Speaker 5: We're also talking about perhaps getting started with creating a
• 5:11
Speaker 5: Zoom meeting because there are people beyond Charleston that aren't
• 5:16
Speaker 5: going to drive into Charleston to come to our meeting.
• 5:19
Speaker 2: The great thing about if you do it in Zoom
• 5:21
Speaker 2: style is that it can be archived and people could
• 5:25
Speaker 2: go and watch it later. Oh, I didn't know that.
• 5:28
Speaker 2: You can record any time you have a Zoom, and
• 5:31
Speaker 2: that way it'll be there. They can maybe watch it
• 5:33
  Speaker 2: on their schedule.
• 5:34
Speaker 5: And what's unique about Mediterranean is it's old. And old,
• 5:39
Speaker 5: and I mean talking old, and it wasn't brought to
• 5:42
Speaker 5: our shores until approximately 1993, and it is a clean,
• 5:48
Speaker 5: healthy way of eating. You eat better on Mediterranean than
• 5:52
Speaker 5: you've ever eaten in your life, and you just have
• 5:54
Speaker 5: to pay attention to making sure that poisons like additives, chemicals,
• 6:00
Speaker 5: et cetera, are not in the foods.
• 6:03
  Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
• 6:04
Speaker 5: Because your body, my body, everybody's body does not know
• 6:08
Speaker 5: what to do with those ingredients.
• 6:10
Speaker 2: Especially if you can't pronounce it.
• 6:12
  Speaker 8: Yes, that's also.
• 6:13
Speaker 2: If you can't pronounce it.
• 6:14
Speaker 5: Because, you know, your mouth doesn't go in that direction.
• 6:16
Speaker 2: Exactly. I mean, if it's got that many letters and
• 6:19
Speaker 2: you can't pronounce it, you probably shouldn't eat or drink it.
• 6:22
Speaker 5: And your liver stores up things. Other organs in your
• 6:26
Speaker 5: body stores some of these weird ingredients. But if we
• 6:30
Speaker 5: eat fresh... We increase our chances for a healthier life,
• 6:35
Speaker 5: a longer life. That doesn't mean you're not going to
• 6:37
Speaker 5: die because you're on Mediterranean. There was a wonderful story.
• 6:40
Speaker 5: In fact, you brought it to my attention in the
• 6:43
Speaker 5: Wall Street Journal some months ago, six, eight months ago.
• 6:47
Speaker 5: And this woman made it to 117. At the age
• 6:51
Speaker 5: of 99, she went to the doctor for a checkup.
• 6:54
Speaker 5: And he was amazed. He couldn't find anything wrong with her.
• 6:57
Speaker 5: Asked her what she's eating. She says, I eat the
• 6:59
Speaker 5: Mediterranean way. And then she went on to live another
• 7:02
  Speaker 5: 18 years.
• 7:03
Speaker 2: And according to the article, had a good quality of
• 7:06
Speaker 2: life until like the last year. Because eventually the body
• 7:09
Speaker 2: is going to wear out just like a car.
• 7:11
Speaker 5: And that was her cause of death. She just wore out.
• 7:16
Speaker 5: And so I shared that with a number of people
• 7:18
Speaker 5: and their answer was, I.
• 7:19
Speaker 1: Don't want to live that long.
• 7:21
Speaker 5: Okay, so that's your choice. But when you have a
• 7:24
Speaker 5: quality of life and you can go and do and
• 7:26
Speaker 5: be and also enjoy the company of other people, eating healthfully,
• 7:32
Speaker 5: then you've really done something remarkable for yourself.
• 7:35
Speaker 2: Now, you said that you talked about the year, I
• 7:38
Speaker 2: think you said 1993 or whatever, that we don't want
• 7:40
Speaker 2: people to think that that's when suddenly people die. started
• 7:44
Speaker 2: eating that way. That's just when it became popular because
• 7:46
Speaker 2: people have been eating, many people in America have been
• 7:49
Speaker 2: eating that way long before that. That's just when it
• 7:52
Speaker 2: went mainstream. When somebody said, hey, there's something to this.
• 7:56
Speaker 5: And there is a group in Boston called Old Ways
• 7:58
Speaker 5: and they're available on the internet and it's oldways.org and
• 8:04
Speaker 5: they are responsible for highlighting the Mediterranean and putting some
• 8:09
Speaker 5: attention to it so that more and more people would
• 8:12
Speaker 5: hook their And that's exactly what is beginning to happen.
• 8:18
Speaker 5: People who live the Mediterranean lifestyle will tell you they
• 8:22
Speaker 5: feel better than at any other time. I worry about
• 8:27
Speaker 5: all these people and their hundreds of thousands who are
• 8:30
Speaker 5: taking the GLP injections. because it's becoming like a cultural phenomenon.
• 8:35
Speaker 5: But my question is, long term, is it healthy? I
• 8:39
Speaker 5: don't know. I hope for the people that are taking
• 8:43
Speaker 5: it that it's healthy. But my bigger question is, what
• 8:47
Speaker 5: are you learning about food?
• 8:49
Speaker 2: And what are you doing to go along with that? Okay,
• 8:52
Speaker 2: you want to drop the pounds. Here's what I know
• 8:54
Speaker 2: about it. It'll help you drop the pounds. But if
• 8:56
Speaker 2: you're not eating healthy to go along with that, and
• 9:00
Speaker 2: I'm talking about eating healthy on a regular basis, then okay, yeah,
• 9:03
Speaker 2: if your goal was to lose weight, you did it,
• 9:05
Speaker 2: but you're not making yourself any healthier just by losing weight.
• 9:08
Speaker 2: Any doctor will tell you that.
• 9:09
Speaker 5: Dave, over the years of my life, beginning with bringing
• 9:12
Speaker 5: Weight Watchers to West Virginia, I can tell you I've
• 9:15
Speaker 5: seen so many medications come down the pike.
• 9:19
Speaker 2: And there'll be many more to come.
• 9:21
  Speaker 5: I don't doubt that, but there's always a sad story
• 9:25
Speaker 5: attached to, if I had known this, if I had
• 9:28
  Speaker 5: known that, I wish I hadn't done that. But it's
• 9:31
Speaker 5: always an after-the-fact realization. And so I believe people need
• 9:35
Speaker 5: to eat in order to be at their very best.
• 9:39
Speaker 5: And that's the whole premise behind teaching, living, and loving
• 9:44
  Speaker 5: this Mediterranean lifestyle.
• 9:46
Speaker 2: We had a text here that said, for Millie, How
• 9:48
Speaker 2: about putting both Thanksgiving and Christmas menus together and sharing
• 9:51
  Speaker 2: the recipes online?
• 9:52
  Speaker 5: I think that's a great task, and we'll definitely do
• 9:55
Speaker 5: that because Christmas and Thanksgiving can be wonderful. without being deadly.
• 10:02
  Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
• 10:03
Speaker 5: And I remember when I used to teach in Logan,
• 10:05
Speaker 5: I was so proud of my group. Everybody had broccoli casserole.
• 10:10
Speaker 5: I was really impressed. And then I got a copy
• 10:14
Speaker 5: of the recipe and I lost all of my being
• 10:17
Speaker 5: impressed because the green was in it only for affect
• 10:22
Speaker 5: and color. And everything else that you shouldn't eat was
• 10:26
Speaker 5: the basis of the broccoli casserole.
• 10:29
Speaker 2: You have to be careful because just because you see
• 10:31
Speaker 2: The words, if you're shopping and you see the words
• 10:33
Speaker 2: low fat or you see the word this or whatever,
• 10:36
Speaker 2: that's like the kiss of death. Even, you know, and
• 10:38
Speaker 2: we were having a discussion in the office the other day,
• 10:40
Speaker 2: one of my coworkers and I, about sodas. And I said,
• 10:43
Speaker 2: I don't drink sodas. I mean, I gave it up completely.
• 10:46
  Speaker 9: That's great.
• 10:47
Speaker 5: I'm happy to hear that.
• 10:48
Speaker 2: But, well, I mean, I did it years ago. Now,
• 10:49
Speaker 2: I may occasionally break over, but if I do, I'll
• 10:52
Speaker 2: have one. You know, I don't go to the store
• 10:54
Speaker 2: and buy like a 12-pack of Diet Coke. That was
• 10:57
Speaker 2: my drink of choice for many, many years. But- They
• 11:00
Speaker 2: say if you're going to have a diet, if you
• 11:04
Speaker 2: have a taste for a soda, I'm talking like one occasionally,
• 11:07
Speaker 2: get a regular soda because it actually doesn't have all
• 11:11
Speaker 2: the chemicals that diet does.
• 11:12
  Speaker 10: Exactly right.
• 11:12
Speaker 8: I'm talking about drinking one.
• 11:13
Speaker 5: Exactly right. And that is, I'm so glad you said
• 11:16
Speaker 5: that because people think they're really doing themselves a great
• 11:19
Speaker 5: favor by having diet soda. But for it to be
• 11:23
Speaker 5: diet soda- It's got stuff in it that, once again,
• 11:26
Speaker 5: your body has no clue what to do with. Tastes
• 11:29
Speaker 5: good in your mouth with a big question mark after that.
• 11:32
  Speaker 6: All right.
• 11:32
Speaker 2: I got to ask you because Halloween is one week
• 11:35
  Speaker 2: from this Saturday.
• 11:35
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 11:35
Speaker 2: Trick-or-treaters will be out there.
• 11:37
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 11:37
Speaker 2: How do you handle that? I know you're not handing
• 11:39
Speaker 2: out broccoli stalks at your house, are you?
• 11:40
  Speaker 5: For sure.
• 11:41
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 11:42
Speaker 5: I buy a bag of candy, and I am in
• 11:45
Speaker 5: the ready mindset. Kids come. I'm going to put some
• 11:49
Speaker 5: stuff in their bags, and then I'm going to make
• 11:52
Speaker 5: sure I try to get rid of the entire bag.
• 11:54
Speaker 5: I only bought one.
• 11:55
Speaker 2: What do parents need to know? I know it's that
• 12:00
Speaker 2: one night a year, but childhood obesity rates are through
• 12:04
  Speaker 2: the roof. There's a whole lot. It's a lot bigger
• 12:07
Speaker 2: problem than what it was when I was growing up.
• 12:09
Speaker 2: What do parents need to know about trick-or-treat? You don't
• 12:10
Speaker 2: want to take all the fun out of it.
• 12:12
Speaker 5: I think they need to support the whole idea that
• 12:16
Speaker 5: their kids have some And also then maybe take a
• 12:19
Speaker 5: lot of the excess because some kids really get a
• 12:23
Speaker 5: huge quantity. And then put it all together, divide it
• 12:27
Speaker 5: up in some smaller bags, and maybe take them to
• 12:30
Speaker 5: some of the food banks so that perhaps other people
• 12:34
Speaker 5: can partake in some of that. But if you keep
• 12:36
Speaker 5: 35 or 40 pieces of candy in the house and say, well,
• 12:40
Speaker 5: it's your bag, you're only encouraging that bag to get eaten.
• 12:44
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 12:45
Speaker 2: Remind people the time, location.
• 12:47
Speaker 5: Thursday morning, our meeting is at 930. We try to
• 12:52
Speaker 5: start at 10 o'clock. That's when everybody gets in and
• 12:55
Speaker 5: gets weighed. And we get weighed not for any other
• 12:58
Speaker 5: reason than as a barometer to see how we are doing.
• 13:03
Speaker 5: Small fees apply. And there's plenty of parking. American Job Center,
• 13:06
Speaker 5: 426 Leon Sullivan Way. Very easy to find.
• 13:14
Speaker 2: Well, it's always a pleasure. Happy birthday again.
• 13:16
Speaker 1: Thank you very much.
• 13:17
Speaker 2: You get to celebrate throughout the month. It's your birthday month, right?
• 13:19
Speaker 2: You can celebrate throughout the month.
• 13:21
Speaker 1: Well, I'm all for it.
• 13:22
  Speaker 2: She's all.
• 13:23
Speaker 5: Apparently, several of my friends have the same ideas. We're
• 13:25
Speaker 5: going to go out and go to. Several restaurants this week.
• 13:29
  Speaker 9: Nice.
• 13:30
  Speaker 6: Enjoy.
• 13:30
  Speaker 5: Thank you, Dave.

• 16:32
Speaker 2: ER in here because we got nurses running around and
• 16:34
Speaker 2: we got... And here's the thing I think is really,
• 16:36
Speaker 2: really interesting is that our company, God bless, I love
• 16:40
Speaker 2: our company, but they bring in snacks and there's all
• 16:43

• 17:05
Speaker 2: uh you've served how many terms now.
• 17:07
Speaker 9: This is my second term running for my third.
• 17:09
Speaker 2: All right so give us your bio on ad shanley.
• 17:13
  Speaker 13: Yes, Dave.
• 17:14
Speaker 9: I've been privileged to represent the 59th District in the
• 17:17
Speaker 9: House of Delegates, which encompasses most of Nitro, most of Crosslanes,
• 17:23
Speaker 9: and a portion of St. Albans outside the city limits.
• 17:29
Speaker 9: I teach at Nitro High School. It's actually my 12th
• 17:32
Speaker 9: year teaching, and I teach 12th grade civics primarily. As
• 17:36
Speaker 9: I often say, I teach how government is supposed to work.
• 17:40
Speaker 9: And I also like to also state that we do
• 17:44
  Speaker 9: teach civics.
• 17:46
Speaker 2: You and I have talked about that before because we
• 17:48
Speaker 2: get that all the time. They don't teach these kids civics. Yeah,
• 17:50
  Speaker 2: actually they do.
• 17:50
Speaker 9: I spoke at the Farm Bureau a couple, well, last week,
• 17:54
Speaker 9: and they were shocked to find out that we teach
• 17:57
Speaker 9: civics in schools. And it's required, is it not? It
• 18:00
Speaker 9: is required. And what grade level is it?
• 18:02
Speaker 2: 12th grade. See, I think that's much better because when
• 18:05
Speaker 2: I was in school, back in 1833 when West Virginia
• 18:10
Speaker 2: wasn't a state yet. Now, we did in my eighth
• 18:13
Speaker 2: grade year, we did one semester, I guess, two semesters,
• 18:17
Speaker 2: half a year of West Virginia history. And then the
• 18:19
Speaker 2: second part was civics. And I enjoyed it because I
• 18:22
Speaker 2: was a geek that way, still am. But in eighth grade,
• 18:25
Speaker 2: I was thinking, well, for people like that don't really
• 18:28
Speaker 2: get into this, is that really the I mean, I
• 18:30
Speaker 2: guess basics of government is cool, but I think if
• 18:33
Speaker 2: you're trying to teach civic responsibility, I would think older
• 18:36
Speaker 2: is better. Now, you're an educator. What do you think?
• 18:38
Speaker 9: Yeah, I absolutely agree. I think 12th grade is the
• 18:42
Speaker 9: ideal grade because students are getting ready to graduate. They're 17,
• 18:46
Speaker 9: 18 years old. They're starting to think more civically in
• 18:51
Speaker 9: terms of political parties and registering to vote. So all
• 18:56
Speaker 9: of that fits together perfectly. So I think 12th grade
• 18:59
Speaker 9: is the ideal grade. year to teach it.
• 19:01
Speaker 2: So with you being an educator, as you are, why
• 19:06
Speaker 2: did you want to do this to begin with? Why
• 19:08
Speaker 2: did you want to run for House of Delegates?
• 19:09
Speaker 9: Well, in 2022, when I ran for the first time,
• 19:14
Speaker 9: one sort of eye-opening moment a year or two prior
• 19:19
Speaker 9: to that was I was going through my high school yearbook.
• 19:22
Speaker 9: And in my high school yearbook, I noticed that probably
• 19:25
Speaker 9: a third to maybe 40 percent Of those that I
• 19:29
Speaker 9: graduated high school with had left the state and they
• 19:33
Speaker 9: didn't leave the state because they wanted to. They left
• 19:35
Speaker 9: because they saw greater economic opportunities elsewhere. And for me,
• 19:41
Speaker 9: you know, one of my primary purposes, focuses has always
• 19:46
Speaker 9: been making West Virginia a better place to live. work,
• 19:50
Speaker 9: and raise a family. And I think that from a
• 19:54
Speaker 9: legislative perspective, some of our greatest challenges involve economics, improving
• 20:02
Speaker 9: and diversifying our economy and our infrastructure. And as a delegate,
• 20:06
Speaker 9: that's something that I've spent an immense amount of time
• 20:09
Speaker 9: focused on in my local area, is trying to improve
• 20:12
Speaker 9: our roads, our drainage. Crosslanes just has a plethora of
• 20:18
Speaker 9: infrastructure problems. We have the road widening project. All of
• 20:22
Speaker 9: that has been a huge part of my time in
• 20:25
Speaker 9: the legislature. But in terms of why I originally ran,
• 20:27
Speaker 9: to get back to your original question, it was to
• 20:32
Speaker 9: focus on West Virginia as someone who chose to stay here,
• 20:36
Speaker 9: who wants to stay here, who wants to be here,
• 20:39
Speaker 9: who's proud of West Virginia, proud of my local area.
• 20:42
Speaker 9: I'm a lifelong resident of my district, lifelong resident of Nitro.
• 20:47
Speaker 9: We have to continue efforts to diversify our economy.
• 20:51
Speaker 2: Talking to Andy Shamlin again. You're a delegate. You're in
• 20:54
Speaker 2: a unique position since you're not only a delegate, but
• 20:56
Speaker 2: also an educator, as we mentioned earlier. And we know,
• 20:59
Speaker 2: and you've alluded to, and we do have problems in
• 21:00
Speaker 2: our public schools. I mean, headline this morning, wvmetronews.com, West
• 21:04
Speaker 2: Virginia public school enrollment drops by more than 8,000 students.
• 21:08
Speaker 2: All 55 West Virginia counties reported public school enrollment losses.
• 21:15
Speaker 2: What does that make you feel? How do you respond
• 21:17
  Speaker 2: to that?
• 21:19
Speaker 9: It's disheartening because as someone who is a product of
• 21:25
Speaker 9: the public education system, I was the first person in
• 21:28
Speaker 9: my family to graduate college. I was a first-generation college student,
• 21:33
Speaker 9: and I give a lot of credit for that that
• 21:37
Speaker 9: achievement to the public school system that I went through.
• 21:41
Speaker 9: My teachers were such great influences on me. And public
• 21:45
Speaker 9: schools educate all the students, every student from every ability level,
• 21:51
Speaker 9: from the highest to those who are on a different
• 21:55
Speaker 9: part of the spectrum. So, you know, when I hear
• 21:58
Speaker 9: about student enrollment declining like that, and I read about that,
• 22:02
Speaker 9: it says to me that our public schools are in crisis.
• 22:05
Speaker 9: In the legislature, I mean, one thing we've worked on
• 22:07
Speaker 9: last year, and we didn't get it across the finish line,
• 22:10
Speaker 9: is changing the school funding formula. That has to be
• 22:16
Speaker 9: a priority in the upcoming session. The current formula is
• 22:20
Speaker 9: heavily weighted based on enrollment. And the reality is schools
• 22:25
Speaker 9: have a lot of costs that are fixed, regardless of
• 22:28
Speaker 9: the number of students they have. there has to be
• 22:33
Speaker 9: some provision put in that will calculate funding in other
• 22:38
Speaker 9: ways besides just enrollment. So for me, that's going to
• 22:42
Speaker 9: be one of my focuses if I'm fortunate enough to
• 22:45
  Speaker 9: win re-election.
• 22:46
Speaker 2: But what would you say to those, and I don't
• 22:47
Speaker 2: disagree with what you're saying, but what would you say
• 22:49
Speaker 2: to those that say, look, It's not economically feasible to
• 22:53
Speaker 2: keep– I don't know that we have the bigger problem here,
• 22:55
Speaker 2: but maybe we do because Kanawha County has had several
• 22:57
Speaker 2: consolidations and closings, just like the state of West Virginia.
• 23:00
Speaker 2: What do you say to those people that say the
• 23:02
Speaker 2: way we operate schools in West Virginia is simply not
• 23:06
  Speaker 2: economically feasible?
• 23:07
Speaker 9: Well, I think there's some validity to that. I mean,
• 23:10
Speaker 9: I will agree. I think we have too many county
• 23:13
Speaker 9: boards of education, for example. We have too much bureaucracy
• 23:16
Speaker 9: in education. Somehow we've got to find a way to
• 23:19
Speaker 9: strike a balance between local control and what is economically feasible.
• 23:27
Speaker 9: So I do not disagree that there need to be
• 23:31
Speaker 9: changes to how we operate schools in West Virginia, especially
• 23:35
Speaker 9: from a systems perspective.
• 23:38
Speaker 2: Can I read a text here for you?
• 23:39
  Speaker 5: Sure.
• 23:39
  Speaker 7: Okay.
• 23:40
Speaker 2: It says, okay, you're teaching civics. Then how is it
• 23:43
Speaker 2: that these kids are being taught how horrible the United
• 23:45
Speaker 2: States is, how evil, racist, xenophobic, et cetera, and how
• 23:49
Speaker 2: we are a democracy, which is actually mob rule instead
• 23:52
Speaker 2: of a constitutionally elected representative republic? Editor's note here, I
• 23:56
Speaker 2: have in a former life been in Delegate Shamblin's, before
• 23:59
Speaker 2: he was a delegate, classroom. None of those things were
• 24:03
Speaker 2: taught in York. That's not to say every teacher taught
• 24:06
Speaker 2: the way you did. You're a heck of a great teacher,
• 24:09
Speaker 2: and I never heard you once say anything in your class,
• 24:12
Speaker 2: and I don't know, maybe in any class in West Virginia,
• 24:16
Speaker 2: anything remotely close to that. Not saying it doesn't happen.
• 24:19
Speaker 2: I never experienced that, though.
• 24:22
Speaker 9: Actually, one of the first things I teach my civics
• 24:24
Speaker 9: students is one of the one of the most common
• 24:27
Speaker 9: fallacies that is stated, and it's not just stated by
• 24:31
Speaker 9: public school teachers, it's stated by politicians at all levels,
• 24:34
Speaker 9: is we live in a democracy.
• 24:35
  Speaker 2: We do not.
• 24:36
Speaker 9: We live in a representative democracy or in a republic.
• 24:40
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 24:40
Speaker 9: We don't live in a democracy because the.
• 24:42
  Speaker 8: People do not.
• 24:43
Speaker 2: Which is what the texture was saying.
• 24:44
  Speaker 6: Right, right.
• 24:44
Speaker 9: I mean, the people do not make decisions for themselves,
• 24:47
Speaker 9: by and large. They elect people to represent them. So why,
• 24:51
Speaker 9: I mean, to the extent that that's being... taught, I mean,
• 24:55
Speaker 9: I'm not saying it isn't happening somewhere. I'm sure it
• 24:57
Speaker 9: is because, you know, schools are just like any other profession.
• 25:01
  Speaker 2: They're a microcosm of society.
• 25:03
  Speaker 9: That's exactly right. You're a microcosm of society. And I
• 25:06
Speaker 9: think so often, and I'm not saying that there aren't
• 25:10
Speaker 9: things that go on sometimes in public schools that aren't
• 25:13
Speaker 9: concerning because there certainly are. But for the most part,
• 25:18
Speaker 9: I do not think that teachers are deliberately misteaching or
• 25:23
Speaker 9: misrepresenting American values or American civics or anything along those lines.
• 25:30
Speaker 9: I mean, what I see in schools is generally positive.
• 25:33
Speaker 2: What are you most proud of during your tenure in
• 25:35
  Speaker 2: the legislature?
• 25:37
Speaker 9: Working for my local area. Passing bills is important, and
• 25:41
Speaker 9: I've been able to pass some bills. But for me,
• 25:45
Speaker 9: what I'm most proud of is advocating for my community.
• 25:50
Speaker 9: I'll give a couple examples of that. I mean, When
• 25:53
Speaker 9: my constituents had problems with their garbage pickup, I took
• 25:57
Speaker 9: on waste management. I went to the Public Service Commission,
• 25:59
Speaker 9: stood up to special interest groups, and initiated a full investigation,
• 26:04
Speaker 9: over 300 documented complaints regarding that, and it led to
• 26:08
Speaker 9: improved service. You know, the Crosslanes Widening Project, I've remained
• 26:12
Speaker 9: vigilant on that. Just recently at Kroger's, a lot of
• 26:16
Speaker 9: my constituents were having their accounts hacked because of problems
• 26:21
Speaker 9: at the Crosslands Kroger, and I went to the attorney general,
• 26:24
Speaker 9: and we were able to initiate an investigation on that
• 26:27
Speaker 9: and correct some of those problems. So, you know, we
• 26:30
Speaker 9: think so much about government. Well, we think so much
• 26:34
Speaker 9: about politics being divisive and being ugly, and that's a
• 26:37
Speaker 9: side of politics and a side of government. But I
• 26:40
Speaker 9: found that I focus primarily on my local area, my
• 26:45
Speaker 9: local district. I try to return every call, every message,
• 26:49
Speaker 9: and fix every problem that I can.
• 26:51
Speaker 2: You have a website or social media?
• 26:53
Speaker 9: I have Delegate Andy Shamblin on Facebook.
• 26:55
Speaker 2: Okay. Final 30, why should someone vote to reelect Andy
• 26:58
Speaker 2: Shamblin to the House in District 59?
• 27:00
Speaker 9: Someone should vote for Andy Shamblin for House because I
• 27:04
Speaker 9: will continue to work to get things done. I may
• 27:08
Speaker 9: not always get caught up in all the flashy headlines,
• 27:11
Speaker 9: but I will always answer your call. I will always
• 27:14
Speaker 9: return your message, and I will always work for you
• 27:17
Speaker 9: to put your interests first.

• 30:22

• 30:24
Speaker 2: Crosslanes Kroger. We had our bank account as well as
• 30:26
Speaker 2: our Capital One and our Chase Freedom Cards hacked, and
• 30:29
Speaker 2: it's a nightmare to get that taken care of. Is
• 30:31
Speaker 2: there any way to stop this push for a cashless
• 30:33
Speaker 2: society of nothing if you don't have your good name.
• 30:37
Speaker 2: Coming up later today, Metro News Midday, powered by Salango
• 30:39
Speaker 2: Law with Amanda Barron and me. Lead story this morning,
• 30:41
Speaker 2: mentioned earlier, West Virginia public school enrollment is dropped by
• 30:44
Speaker 2: more than 8,000 students. Brad writes about it this morning, wvmetronews.com.

• 31:04
Speaker 2: folks from the New River Gorge Development Authority will stop
• 31:06
Speaker 2: by and more all on Metro News Midday. On this
• 31:09
Speaker 2: show tomorrow, we continue talking to candidates. Ryan Ball, who
• 31:11
Speaker 2: is a candidate for circuit judge in Putnam County, is
• 31:14
Speaker 2: going to stop by. Attorney General J.B. McCuskey, not on
• 31:17
Speaker 2: the ballot, but he's going to stop by tomorrow. Spend
• 31:19
Speaker 2: some time talking about this weekend's West Virginia Book Festival
• 31:22
Speaker 2: at the Vandalia Health Center. Got to get used to
• 31:24
Speaker 2: saying that. And retiring Charleston Police Chief Scott Dempsey all
• 31:27
Speaker 2: coming up on tomorrow's show. I want to welcome to
• 31:33
Speaker 2: the show now Sergeant Travis Bales from the Charleston Police Department.
• 31:37
Speaker 2: Good morning, sir. Welcome to the show.
• 31:38
  Speaker 7: Good morning, Dave.
• 31:38
  Speaker 1: How are you?
• 31:39
Speaker 2: I had a cop on the show yesterday, one today
• 31:43
Speaker 2: and a retiring one tomorrow. Last time I saw this
• 31:45
Speaker 2: many cops in front of me at one place, it
• 31:47
Speaker 2: was at a keg party when I was at Marshall
• 31:49
Speaker 2: in the early 1990s. But this is all good stuff, right?
• 31:51
Speaker 16: It's all good things.
• 31:52
Speaker 2: All good things. So you've got your I Voted sticker on.
• 31:55
Speaker 2: So I'm going to ask you, you went out and
• 31:57
  Speaker 2: early voted today.
• 31:58
  Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
• 31:58
Speaker 2: Process go well? Oh, very smooth.
• 32:00
Speaker 16: I went over to voter registration there on Courier Street.
• 32:03
Speaker 16: I was in an Atlas in 10 minutes.
• 32:04
  Speaker 1: There you go.
• 32:05
Speaker 2: Well, and thank you for your, for your civic duty.
• 32:07
  Speaker 17: Oh yes.
• 32:08
Speaker 1: Always happy to do it.
• 32:08
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 32:09
Speaker 2: So you and the department are doing this first ever
• 32:11
Speaker 2: first responder pickleball classic in nitro at the athletic complex,
• 32:15
Speaker 2: Saturday and Sunday, November 7th. And they tell us about this.
• 32:17
Speaker 16: Oh, well, this is one of the things that our
• 32:19
Speaker 16: citizen police Academy alumni association, they do so many great
• 32:22
Speaker 16: things for the community and, and, and for the police department.
• 32:24
Speaker 16: But this is just one of the ways they raise
• 32:26
Speaker 16: money to provide for things like the, uh, wonderland toy drive.
• 32:30
Speaker 16: We do every year, the junior police Academy, um, and
• 32:34
Speaker 16: just anything that could help support the community. So, um,
• 32:37
Speaker 16: seventh and eighth, there's going to be a tournaments all day.
• 32:39
Speaker 16: You know, I've never been around a pickleball tournament. So
• 32:42
Speaker 16: are you a player yourself? I've never played until yesterday.
• 32:44
Speaker 16: I got to try it out.
• 32:45
Speaker 2: And what'd you think?
• 32:46
  Speaker 16: I picked it up pretty easy. I mean, it's, it's
• 32:49
Speaker 16: something you could, anybody could go in there and learn
• 32:50
  Speaker 16: if they it's.
• 32:51
Speaker 2: Grown so much. I mean, we're, we've talked about it
• 32:53
Speaker 2: with several different people, uh, Mr. Rutherford among them, you know,
• 32:56
  Speaker 2: I mean, it's, it's been, uh, it's been on incredible
• 33:00
Speaker 2: the growth of the sport in america.
• 33:01
Speaker 16: Yeah yeah i can see why it was it was
• 33:03
Speaker 16: like i said easy to pick up and not too
• 33:05
Speaker 16: physically demanding but you definitely get a workout.
• 33:07
Speaker 2: Doing it right yeah it's going to be november the
• 33:09
Speaker 2: 7th and 8th and you were talking about the different
• 33:11
Speaker 2: uh charitable aspects of this that's what it's all about
• 33:13
Speaker 2: it's about the work that you folks do in the
• 33:15
Speaker 2: community to help other folks.
• 33:16
Speaker 16: Oh yes yes uh all everything the proceeds are going
• 33:19
Speaker 16: to benefit the myriad of youth programs we we do
• 33:22
Speaker 16: here in the city.
• 33:22
Speaker 2: So how do people get signed up for well.
• 33:24
Speaker 16: If there's a facebook page dedicated to that um the
• 33:26
Speaker 16: charleston west virginia police uh academy pickleball tournament or if
• 33:31
Speaker 16: you go to the charleston wv police department facebook page
• 33:33
Speaker 16: it'll be linked on there as well uh just simply
• 33:36
Speaker 16: scan the qr code and you can sign up.
• 33:38
Speaker 2: And so how many i mean you want as many
• 33:40
Speaker 2: teams as possible what do you have like a target
• 33:42
Speaker 2: you like to have this many teams or do you
• 33:44
Speaker 2: have like a maximum or.
• 33:45
Speaker 16: What i think if you sign up you're going to
• 33:47
Speaker 16: get to play Um, our goal was a hundred and
• 33:49
Speaker 16: we're not there yet, but we're, we're getting there.
• 33:51
Speaker 2: So forgive me if you said this already, cause I
• 33:53
Speaker 2: said teams, I mean, or can individuals do it too?
• 33:56
Speaker 2: Or is it just, I mean, how does that work?
• 33:57
Speaker 16: If individuals want to sign up, they'll pair you with somebody,
• 33:59
Speaker 16: but yeah, they're going to do gender doubles and mixed doubles.
• 34:02
Speaker 2: Okay. All right. Well, it sounds like a good time.
• 34:04
Speaker 2: And as I said, uh, I know the other pickleball
• 34:06
Speaker 2: events that have gone on have been extremely popular here
• 34:09
Speaker 2: and you have it in a great venue at the
• 34:10
  Speaker 2: nitro sports complex. Cause it's a, it's a, it's a
• 34:13
Speaker 2: very good looking menu. I mean, I'm thinking about food.
• 34:16
Speaker 2: I was talking to me at least venue, not menu, venue,
• 34:19
Speaker 2: menu over there is not bad either. Uh, but, uh,
• 34:22
Speaker 2: but I mean, I can see why this, like you said, I,
• 34:24
Speaker 2: I don't play myself, but in, in, in reading about
• 34:27
Speaker 2: it and, and watching a little bit on television, I
• 34:29
Speaker 2: can see why it's very popular and you certainly enjoyed
• 34:31
Speaker 2: it your first day out.
• 34:32
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 34:32
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 34:32
Speaker 16: We just, you know, got out there and a couple
• 34:35
Speaker 16: of the guys who were there playing showed us the
• 34:37
Speaker 16: ropes and, uh, I don't know.
• 34:39
Speaker 2: I might sign up myself. What did you take away
• 34:41
Speaker 2: from your first time playing that surprised you? You said
• 34:46
Speaker 2: maybe I wouldn't expect in that. What was it?
• 34:49
Speaker 1: Just how easy it is to learn the rules.
• 34:51
Speaker 2: What are the basic rules? I know we're on radio,
• 34:54
Speaker 2: but the basic rules.
• 34:54
Speaker 16: It's kind of like tennis in a way that you
• 34:57
Speaker 16: can only score on your serve and things of that nature.
• 35:00
Speaker 16: But for the most part, as long as you're letting
• 35:02
Speaker 16: it bounce and not hitting it in the kitchen. That's,
• 35:05
Speaker 16: that's what they call the little red zone in the front.
• 35:06
Speaker 2: Hitting it in the kitchen.
• 35:07
Speaker 16: Well, you can hit it, but you can't be standing
• 35:09
Speaker 16: in there and you gotta let it bounce. And there's
• 35:11
Speaker 16: some intricacies to it, but it's easy to pick up.
• 35:13
Speaker 2: Well, and you can, you know, learn before you go.
• 35:15
Speaker 2: Just Google it. There's plenty of YouTube videos, I'm sure,
• 35:18
Speaker 2: out there as well. But again, you'll be right. The
• 35:20
Speaker 2: bottom line is, is whether you're any good at it
• 35:22
Speaker 2: or not, that's not the point. The point is, is
• 35:24
Speaker 2: that you're raising money for these wonderful charitable things that
• 35:28
Speaker 2: you folks, your first responders do. And this is open
• 35:30
Speaker 2: to I mean, this is to raise money for all
• 35:33
  Speaker 2: those folks, right?
• 35:33
  Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah.
• 35:34
Speaker 16: And you're guaranteed one to have fun and guaranteed to
• 35:37
Speaker 16: contribute to a good cause.
• 35:38
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 35:38
Speaker 2: November 7th and 8th, it'll be at the Nitro Athletic Complex.
• 35:42
Speaker 2: Where can people learn more about it?
• 35:44
Speaker 16: On our Facebook pages, which is, if you just go
• 35:47
Speaker 16: to the Charleston, Michigan Police Department Facebook page, you can
• 35:50
  Speaker 16: link it there.
• 35:50
Speaker 2: All right. We'll have you on. maybe one more time
• 35:54
  Speaker 2: heading into it.
• 35:55
  Speaker 7: Absolutely.
• 35:55
  Speaker 1: Sounds good.
• 35:56
Speaker 2: All right. Appreciate you being here, Sergeant Travis Bales with
• 35:59
Speaker 2: the Charleston Police Department. Thanks a lot. Hang out with
• 36:01
Speaker 2: me here just one second. I do want to get
• 36:04
Speaker 2: this in there. Tonight and every Wednesday night, my man

• 36:09
Speaker 2: he hosts the State Coaches Show at The Pitch at

Speaker 2: Shawnee Sports Complex. Lots of great football talk and good
• 36:15
Speaker 2: food and drink as well, so be sure and join
• 36:16
Speaker 2: Daniel at The Pitch tonight. And 107.3 The Beat, of course,
• 36:20
Speaker 2: is your home for West Virginia State Athletics. We'll start
• 36:22
Speaker 2: things off at the pitch tonight starting about 7 o'clock.
• 36:25
Speaker 2: Every Friday morning, 9-0-6 for the Adopt Me. I invite
• 36:27
Speaker 2: you to join me for the Adopt Me Police Pet

• 36:44
Speaker 2: South Charleston. Take a break just a little bit early
• 36:46
Speaker 2: because we've got some valuable information I need to get
• 36:48
Speaker 2: out from the Small Business Administration as flood recovery efforts
• 36:50
Speaker 2: continue in the area. We'll get to that when we
• 36:52
Speaker 2: come back on The Voice of Charleston WCHS.

Speaker 4: I'm Jason Lowe, the lead pastor of Faith Community Church
• 37:41
Speaker 4: in Beckley. If you are looking for a construction company,
• 37:43
Speaker 4: I would strongly recommend Jarrett Construction. John and his team
• 37:46
Speaker 4: walked us through the process of building our church from
• 37:48
Speaker 4: conceptualization to having a finished, fully functional building. When you build,
• 37:52
Speaker 4: there are always challenges, and you need a partner who
• 37:54
Speaker 4: will be present, take responsibility for the finished product, and
• 37:56
Speaker 4: effectively manage time and money. The team at Jarrett Construction
• 37:59
Speaker 4: was a godsend to us, and I'm excited to recommend
• 38:01
Speaker 4: them to other churches, businesses, or anyone needing a construction

• 38:45
Speaker 18: moments as a lung and critical care doctor right here
• 38:48
Speaker 18: at home. In the state Senate, he brings that same approach. Listen,
• 38:53
Speaker 18: diagnose the problem, fix it. Lower costs, better care. Good
• 38:58
Speaker 18: jobs that keep our kids here. Not partisan politics, just results.
• 39:03
  Speaker 12: Dr.
• 39:03
  Speaker 1: Tom Takubo.
• 39:05
Speaker 18: Because West Virginia's people come first.

Speaker 2: Lots of areas in our state still cleaning up following flooding.
• 39:45
Speaker 2: The official presidential proclamation of a disaster happened earlier this month,
• 39:48
Speaker 2: and folks have set up shop all over the state
• 39:50
Speaker 2: of West Virginia, including here in the Charleston area to
• 39:52
Speaker 2: try to help. Patty Hartman has been on site at
• 39:54
Speaker 2: the Charleston Area Alliance Building, which is at 1116 Smith Street.
• 39:58
Speaker 2: Since last week, she joins us this morning in the
• 40:00
Speaker 2: Jera Construction Studios. Patty, good morning. Welcome to the show.
• 40:02
Speaker 17: Good morning, Dave. Thanks so much for having us on.
• 40:04
Speaker 2: I got to say this because during the break there,
• 40:07
Speaker 2: you came in and you talked about our studios here
• 40:09
Speaker 2: and you said that you did a little radio. So
• 40:13
Speaker 2: I got to ask you, because I'm one radio person
• 40:16
Speaker 2: to another, tell me your radio story.
• 40:19
Speaker 17: Oh, what's my radio story? I started out a long
• 40:22
Speaker 17: time ago, but cut my teeth in news radio in Wilmington, Delaware.
• 40:27
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 40:28
Speaker 17: A little radio station, WILM News Radio. We were between
• 40:32
Speaker 17: Baltimore and Philadelphia, but we were an all-news station.
• 40:35
  Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
• 40:36
Speaker 17: Which was kind of unusual.
• 40:38
  Speaker 1: It was.
• 40:39
Speaker 2: It was. I mean, I don't want to say back
• 40:40
Speaker 2: in those days, but I mean, you know, news talk
• 40:43
Speaker 2: has really taken off, you know, news talk and sports.
• 40:46
Speaker 2: There weren't nearly as many. Usually every big city had, like,
• 40:49
Speaker 2: we were the one in Charleston, you know, and every
• 40:52
Speaker 2: big city had that one station, and that was pretty
• 40:54
Speaker 2: much it. And now it's actually a growing format in
• 40:59
Speaker 2: the world of radio.
• 41:00
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 41:00
Speaker 17: Well, podcasts are based on radio, right?
• 41:02
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it. One of the funniest things I ever saw,
• 41:05
Speaker 2: and I promise I'll get to real stuff here, on
• 41:09
Speaker 2: social media one time, somebody made a comment. It was
• 41:11
Speaker 2: a meme, and it just said, you know, if only
• 41:13
Speaker 2: there were a podcast that could offer live, up-to-date information
• 41:17
Speaker 2: for people, and maybe you could interact with people. And
• 41:20
Speaker 2: the bottom of it said, yeah, it's called radio. It's
• 41:24
Speaker 2: been around for a long time. I want to get
• 41:26
Speaker 2: your title in here now. You are public affairs specialist
• 41:29
Speaker 2: for the Office of Disaster Recovery with the U.S. Small
• 41:32
Speaker 2: Business Administration. If you're trying to get all that on
• 41:34
Speaker 2: a business card, you may need poster paper for that.
• 41:36
Speaker 2: I'm just throwing it out there.
• 41:37
Speaker 9: It is a mouthful.
• 41:38
Speaker 2: You set up in Charleston. Tell us what exactly you're
• 41:42
Speaker 2: with the Charleston Area Alliance for. Tell us exactly how
• 41:44
Speaker 2: this whole thing came about and what it is that
• 41:46
Speaker 2: you're doing for people.
• 41:46
Speaker 17: So there's a presidential disaster declaration for West Virginia. There
• 41:50
Speaker 17: are three primary counties that are part of the declaration.
• 41:54
Speaker 17: It's Fayette County, Kanawha County, and Harrison County. And then
• 41:59
Speaker 17: any county that touches a primary county is what we
• 42:03
Speaker 17: call a contiguous county. And they're eligible for a different program.
• 42:06
Speaker 17: In the primary counties, you are eligible for, if you
• 42:11
Speaker 17: had physical damage... and you are a homeowner, a renter,
• 42:14
Speaker 17: a business owner, or a nonprofit, you can get help
• 42:17
Speaker 17: from the SBA loan program to help recover from the disaster.
• 42:23
Speaker 17: We are the largest source of federal funds for the
• 42:26
Speaker 17: government in a disaster. And so the contiguous counties have
• 42:30
Speaker 17: a separate program that is called the Economic Injury Disaster
• 42:37
Speaker 17: Loan Program. That is geared specifically toward businesses. It would be,
• 42:40
Speaker 17: you know, if a business... had trouble getting its supplies
• 42:45
Speaker 17: from a primary county or to a primary county, and
• 42:48
Speaker 17: they suffered economic losses as a result, they could apply
• 42:52
Speaker 17: for the EIDL loan program. They are very low interest loans.
• 42:57
Speaker 17: They start at 3% for homeowners, at 4% for businesses.
• 43:01
Speaker 17: They are interest-free for a year, and you can pay
• 43:06
Speaker 17: them off up to 30 years. So that way it
• 43:08
Speaker 17: becomes sort of a... we're not trying to burden somebody
• 43:12
Speaker 17: that's already been, you know, negatively impacted by a disaster.
• 43:16
Speaker 17: We're trying to help them recover in as feasible a
• 43:20
  Speaker 17: way as possible.
• 43:21
Speaker 2: I want to, I think it's a very good point, Patty,
• 43:23
Speaker 2: that you brought up there. Because when you think of flooding,
• 43:26
Speaker 2: you know, you think of all, you think of the
• 43:28
Speaker 2: muck and you think of, and that's devastating. We all
• 43:30
Speaker 2: know that. But there's a lot more impacts of flooding
• 43:32
Speaker 2: than just what you see, just cleaning up mud out
• 43:35
Speaker 2: of the basement. I mean, there's a whole lot more
• 43:38
Speaker 2: You talked about breaking down that economic chain. That's a
• 43:40
Speaker 2: huge part of it as well.
• 43:41
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 43:42
Speaker 17: Absolutely. And we work alongside FEMA. And you can apply
• 43:46
Speaker 17: for both. If you've been impacted by the disaster, you
• 43:50
Speaker 17: can go to FEMA for help, but you can also
• 43:52
Speaker 17: apply for the disaster loan program at the same time.
• 43:56
Speaker 17: They work together. And so one does not exclude the other.
• 44:01
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 44:04
Speaker 17: We also have a remediation program. So if you had
• 44:08
Speaker 17: a flood come in your basement, waters came in or whatever,
• 44:11
Speaker 17: and you find that a sump pump would have negated
• 44:16
Speaker 17: that or a French drain around your home could have
• 44:19
Speaker 17: prevented it, you can get a loan through us, low-interest loan,
• 44:24
Speaker 17: to help remediate the problem so that it doesn't happen
• 44:26
Speaker 17: again if there's another disaster.
• 44:28
Speaker 2: Talking to Patty Hartman again. It's 9.52. Trick or Beat
• 44:31
Speaker 2: with 107.3 The Beat is back at GoMart Ballpark on Thursday,
• 44:34
Speaker 2: October 29th. Two sessions, one from 6 to 7, the
• 44:37
Speaker 2: other from 7.30 to 8.30, presented by Salango Law. Admission
• 44:40
Speaker 2: is free, but you must have tickets to enter. Tickets
• 44:42
Speaker 2: available at our studios, 1111 Virginia Street, East Charleston, during
• 44:46
Speaker 2: normal business hours. Check out 107.3 The Beat.com if you
• 44:49
Speaker 2: need more information. So if people decide to come over
• 44:52
Speaker 2: on Smith Street, Charleston Area Alliance building, Can they just
• 44:56
Speaker 2: show up? Do they need to make an appointment ahead
• 44:58
Speaker 2: of time? How does that work?
• 44:58
Speaker 17: You can just show up. We actually have four. We're
• 45:01
Speaker 17: actually in four locations right now. We're at the Charles
• 45:04
Speaker 17: Street location. That's our business recovery center. There's also a
• 45:08
Speaker 17: disaster recovery center that FEMA has set up.
• 45:11
Speaker 9: We are there as well.
• 45:12
Speaker 17: That's at GoMart Park.
• 45:14
  Speaker 2: At the ballpark.
• 45:15
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 45:15
  Speaker 6: Exactly.
• 45:16
  Speaker 2: I got you.
• 45:16
  Speaker 5: Yep.
• 45:16
Speaker 17: There's one in Harrison County at Bridgeport City Hall. And
• 45:20
  Speaker 17: there's a pop-up that's opening today through Friday in Fayette
• 45:24
Speaker 17: County at the Armstrong Volunteer Fire Department. And you can
• 45:28
Speaker 17: just show up. Usually it's for people who have questions,
• 45:32
Speaker 17: are not sure about the process, they don't have access
• 45:34
Speaker 17: to the internet, or they're just more comfortable sitting down
• 45:37
Speaker 17: and talking face-to-face with people. But if you want to
• 45:40
Speaker 17: just apply online, you don't have time to make the trip,
• 45:42
Speaker 17: you can go to sba.gov forward slash disaster. The application
• 45:46
Speaker 17: is there. It's a pretty easy process. You submit your application.
• 45:51
Speaker 17: And then, you know, someone will get back to you.
• 45:54
Speaker 17: There will be a customer service rep that reaches out
• 45:55
Speaker 17: to you, takes you through the process, asks you questions,
• 45:59
Speaker 17: and gets things started. And then you'll have an offer,
• 46:03
Speaker 17: which is they'll offer you a certain amount of money
• 46:05
Speaker 17: for the loan or a certain loan amount. And then
• 46:09
Speaker 17: you make the decision. You have time to decide whether
• 46:12
Speaker 17: or not you want to go forward with the loan.
• 46:14
Speaker 2: We did have a question here, and you sort of,
• 46:15
Speaker 2: I think, touched on this earlier, but I'll put it
• 46:17
Speaker 2: out there again. It says, do you have direct funds
• 46:21
Speaker 2: from your agency or do you guarantee bank loans?
• 46:24
Speaker 17: These are direct funds from the federal government. This is SBA,
• 46:28
Speaker 17: Office of Disaster Recovery. Again, we are the largest source
• 46:31
Speaker 17: of federal funds in a disaster.
• 46:34
Speaker 2: So when people, if they decide to visit, and here
• 46:36
Speaker 2: in Charleston, again, you're at GoMart Ballpark and also at
• 46:38
Speaker 2: the Charleston Area Alliance over on Smith Street. what do
• 46:42
Speaker 2: they need to bring with them?
• 46:44
Speaker 17: Good question. You want to bring, if you have insurance,
• 46:47
Speaker 17: because we also provide these assistance for people who are uninsured,
• 46:51
Speaker 17: but if you have insurance, bring your insurance information, bring
• 46:55
Speaker 17: photos of the damage, if you have them, bring ID.
• 46:59
Speaker 17: So you want to have, you know, your driver's license,
• 47:01
Speaker 17: or if you don't have a driver's license, whatever is
• 47:03
Speaker 17: your government ID. And there also, if you If you
• 47:07
Speaker 17: have access to the Internet, you can go online and
• 47:09
Speaker 17: see all of those items that you would want to
• 47:12
Speaker 17: bring with you. If you forget anything, obviously, you can
• 47:16
Speaker 17: come back or we can tell you how to go
• 47:19
Speaker 17: forward with the process.
• 47:20
Speaker 2: One of the things that FEMA, when we have them on,
• 47:22
Speaker 2: when we have these disasters, Patty, and you well know
• 47:24
Speaker 2: in this, one of the things that they always say
• 47:26
Speaker 2: is that once the flood recovery begins, everybody's human nature
• 47:30
Speaker 2: is to go out and start trying to clean up.
• 47:32
Speaker 2: We've got to get this because it's nasty. We've got
• 47:33
Speaker 2: to get it. But you got to get those pictures
• 47:35
Speaker 2: first and pictures as is not clean up. I mean,
• 47:39
Speaker 2: you got to get maybe you can do before and after.
• 47:41
Speaker 2: I don't know. But you need to get those pictures
• 47:43
Speaker 2: the day of the night of it. And I know
• 47:45
Speaker 2: it's after the fact now, but you got to get
• 47:47
Speaker 2: them at that time. But they're so crucial to have
• 47:49
  Speaker 2: those pictures.
• 47:50
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 47:50
Speaker 17: But you're usually going to have if you have damage,
• 47:53
Speaker 17: you're usually going to have it even after you've cleaned up.
• 47:56
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 47:56
Speaker 17: Like you're going to see the water line in the basement.
• 47:58
Speaker 17: You're going to see the siding ripped off. You're going
• 48:00
Speaker 17: to see the hole in the roof, whatever the damage is.
• 48:02
Speaker 17: It might have been your car, you know, under the tree.
• 48:06
Speaker 17: Those are the kinds of things that we're talking about.
• 48:08
Speaker 17: So any photos that you can get are helpful.
• 48:12
Speaker 2: And how long are you going to be at these locations?
• 48:15
Speaker 17: So the locations are set up in Charleston. We are
• 48:19
Speaker 17: here for the duration until December. So that's another thing
• 48:22
Speaker 17: I should mention. The deadline for applying is December 7th.
• 48:26
Speaker 17: So you have some time. But always better to get
• 48:29
Speaker 17: your application in earlier rather than wait right up until
• 48:32
Speaker 17: the deadline. And so we will be set up in
• 48:36
Speaker 17: the disaster relief centers until disaster recovery centers until December 7th.
• 48:40
Speaker 2: Well, you picked a pretty good time to be here
• 48:43
Speaker 2: because I mentioned earlier you got light the night over
• 48:46
Speaker 2: at the ballpark. You're going to be right in the
• 48:47
Speaker 2: middle of the ballpark, man, with all that, with like
• 48:50
Speaker 2: millions and millions of lights. So you're going to have
• 48:52
Speaker 2: a free light show while you're working over there.
• 48:53
  Speaker 6: Nice.
• 48:55
Speaker 2: Give us the information again as far as where people
• 48:56
Speaker 2: can go online. Give us that website and all that
• 48:59
  Speaker 2: stuff again.
• 48:59
Speaker 17: Absolutely. SBA.gov forward slash disaster. You can also call 866-SBA-HELP
• 49:07
Speaker 17: and you'll get in touch with a disaster, a customer
• 49:11
Speaker 17: service representative that way as well. So 866-SBA-HELP or SBA.gov
• 49:14
Speaker 17: forward slash disaster. forward slash disaster. And again, the recovery
• 49:22
Speaker 17: centers are at 1116 Smith Street at the Go-Mart Park
• 49:27
Speaker 17: here in Charleston, at Bridgeport City Hall in Bridgeport for
• 49:31
Speaker 17: Harrison County, and at Armstrong Volunteer Fire Department, 3319 Armstrong
• 49:36
Speaker 17: Creek Road in Fayette County.
• 49:38
Speaker 2: The Dave Allen Show on 580 Live is brought to
• 49:40
Speaker 2: you in part by Pinnacle Consultants, helping to identify environmental
• 49:43
Speaker 2: concerns like asbestos, lead, mold, indoor quality issues in buildings
• 49:46
Speaker 2: all across the state, providing inspections, testing, and accredited lab
• 49:49
Speaker 2: services you can trust. Check out PinnacleCorp.net, helping you understand
• 49:52
Speaker 2: your environment because what you don't know can't hurt you.
• 49:54
Speaker 2: I do want to ask you one other question before
• 49:56
Speaker 2: you leave, if you don't mind. I don't want to
• 49:57
Speaker 2: get too personal here, but we talked about your radio career.
• 50:00
Speaker 2: I'd like for you to talk a little bit about
• 50:02
Speaker 2: some of... some of what you've seen, why you do
• 50:05
Speaker 2: what you do in this SBA. I know you obviously
• 50:08
Speaker 2: you like helping people, but, um, talk about some of
• 50:11
Speaker 2: the work that you've done.
• 50:11
Speaker 17: Well, you know, you're a member of the media. We
• 50:14
Speaker 17: are a public servant, right? I've, I feel very strongly
• 50:18
Speaker 17: that the media provides a public service. And so my
• 50:20
Speaker 17: whole working career has been in public service from being
• 50:23
Speaker 17: a member of the news media and then moving into government. Um,
• 50:27
Speaker 17: I've not been with SBA that long, but I've been
• 50:28
Speaker 17: with the federal government for almost 20 years. I transitioned
• 50:31
Speaker 17: from another agency. So, yeah, it's really important in my
• 50:35
Speaker 17: life to just help people.
• 50:37
Speaker 2: All right. Well, Patty, it's been a pleasure to meet
• 50:38
Speaker 2: you and have you on the show today. I told
• 50:40
Speaker 2: you that some guy was going to come in here
• 50:41
Speaker 2: and sit down. While he and I do a preview
• 50:44
Speaker 2: of the Talk Line show, you just kind of hang
• 50:45
  Speaker 2: out there.
• 50:46
  Speaker 9: Thanks, Dave.
• 50:46
Speaker 17: We appreciate your time.
• 50:47
  Speaker 1: T.J.
• 50:48
Speaker 2: Meadows coming up with Talk Line. This is Patty, by
• 50:51
  Speaker 2: the way.
• 50:51
  Speaker 1: Hi, Patty.
• 50:52
Speaker 2: With the SBA, started her career, though, in radio in Wilmington, Delaware.
• 50:57
  Speaker 1: Nice.
• 50:58
Speaker 2: Great talent. Used to work in Wilmington quite a bit.
• 51:01
  Speaker 5: Oh, good out.
• 51:01
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Small world. No, she said get out.
• 51:05
Speaker 3: What you got on the show today? So coming up,
• 51:07
Speaker 3: Brad McElhenney joins us. Latest on red diesel. Governor taking
• 51:10
Speaker 3: executive action yesterday. What does it mean for the trucking
• 51:12
Speaker 3: industry and others? We'll find out. Michelle Stilato, Rome County
• 51:16
Speaker 3: School Superintendent. They have the distinction of losing the most
• 51:19
Speaker 3: students in the state over the past year. She will
• 51:20
Speaker 3: tell us why, and she's got her numbers together.
• 51:22
  Speaker 2: It's very eye-opening.
• 51:24
Speaker 3: Chris Lawrence, Marconi Award winner, you may have heard, joins
• 51:27
Speaker 3: us on TalkLine. I mean, that's the big one. If
• 51:29
Speaker 3: you're in radio, folks, he joins us at 1045. Georgia Hughes,
• 51:33
Speaker 3: Director of Data Management for the West Virginia Department of Education. Again,
• 51:36
Speaker 3: those numbers coming out yesterday, 8,200-plus students, Dave. We lost
• 51:40
Speaker 3: year over year in state schools. She lays out the
• 51:42
Speaker 3: numbers and tells us why.
• 51:43
Speaker 2: And it's the lead story, as I said this morning,
• 51:45
Speaker 2: from Brad McElhaney at WVMetroNews.com. I'll be back later today,
• 51:48
Speaker 2: Metro News Midday. Again, we're going to talk to Dale
• 51:50
Speaker 2: Lee and Christy Skidmore of Education West Virginia about those
• 51:54
Speaker 2: numbers that just came out yesterday. Back on this show
• 51:56
Speaker 2: tomorrow to do it all again. Have yourself a great day.
• 51:58
Speaker 2: See you later today on Monday. Until then, have fun
• 52:00
  Speaker 2: and love somebody.
• 52:19
Speaker 1: WCHSAL, W243DRFM Charleston, and W283AQ Crosslanes, a WVRC media station.
• 52:27
Speaker 1: We're proud to live here too.
