- 0:03Speaker 1: parents are?
- 0:04Speaker 2: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:06Speaker 2: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 0:10Speaker 2: and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:20Speaker 3: This is not a drill.
- 0:23Speaker 4: Repeat, this is not the drill.
- 0:25Speaker 3: At this time, we are.
- 0:27Speaker 5: Requesting the immediate and orderly evacuation of the vicinity.
- 0:36Speaker 6: The Coast Guard and the Navy have been alerted and
- 0:38Speaker 6: are standing by on the eastern seaboard.
- 0:41Speaker 7: And it continues to burn out of control.
- 0:43Speaker 1: It has been regular. Every five to ten minutes, there
- 0:46Speaker 1: has been another convoy of units, fire companies, paramedics... A
- 0:50Speaker 1: citywide emergency has been declared.
- 0:52Speaker 6: Police officers are still on tactical full alert.
- 0:56Speaker 7: 2,000 National Guardsmen are standing by.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Air defense warning read. It's time for Movie Meltdown's Attack
- 1:06Speaker 4: of the Killers soundtrack.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Live transmission has begun, and we're into the final hour
- 1:12Speaker 1: of hell.
- 1:32Speaker 8: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown's Attack of the
- 1:35Speaker 8: Killer soundtrack. I'm Brian, and this week I'm coming to
- 1:37Speaker 8: you with a wide array of movie-themed music, and in actuality,
- 1:41Speaker 8: the majority of it won't be coming from me. Instead,
- 1:44Speaker 8: I've got two guests to supply you with a double-barrel
- 1:46Speaker 8: blast of The Killer Five. Now, at some point a
- 1:50Speaker 8: while back, I was hanging out with Ben and Dave
- 1:53Speaker 8: from Tower of Technobabble. Now, that's two-thirds of the cast
- 1:56Speaker 8: from Tower of Technobabble. Paul won't ever leave the house,
- 1:58Speaker 8: but I don't know what to tell you about him. Actually,
- 2:01Speaker 8: technically speaking, it's one-half of the cast of Tower of Technobabble,
- 2:05Speaker 8: if you include Towerbot, the robot who.
- 2:08Speaker 9: Is, in fact, my favorite member of the cast.
- 2:11Speaker 8: But that darn restraining bolt that keeps him from coming
- 2:14Speaker 8: out and hanging out with us. Unfortunately, I wish he
- 2:16Speaker 8: would come join us on many occasions. Now that I
- 2:19Speaker 8: think about it, maybe Paul has.
- 2:20Speaker 4: A restraining bolt, too.
- 2:22Speaker 10: That's why we never see it.
- 2:24Speaker 8: Anyway, so I was hanging out with Ben and Dave,
- 2:27Speaker 8: and we had the microphones in front of us, and
- 2:29Speaker 8: I said, hey, while we're here, let's record one of
- 2:31Speaker 8: those awesome Attack of the Killer soundtrack episodes. I don't
- 2:34Speaker 8: know if they bought that crazy pitch, but... Ben thought
- 2:37Speaker 8: it was a cool idea, and actually Dave didn't know
- 2:39Speaker 8: it was coming. He sort of had it thrust upon him,
- 2:41Speaker 8: so you will hear he's winging it a little more
- 2:43Speaker 8: than Ben.
- 2:44Speaker 11: Just what do you think you're doing, Dave?
- 2:46Speaker 8: But anyway, they put together a great collection of songs.
- 2:48Speaker 8: We had a lot of fun doing it, and I
- 2:50Speaker 8: wanted to share it with you guys. Now, I'm pretty
- 2:53Speaker 8: much going to let it play for the majority of
- 2:55Speaker 8: this episode. We run through them pretty good all on
- 2:58Speaker 8: our own. But I am going to have to come
- 3:00Speaker 8: back and interrupt us midway in here to call a technical.
- 3:04Speaker 12: On one of these two.
- 3:05Speaker 8: And sort of make an adjustment. You'll see when we
- 3:08Speaker 8: get there. But for the most part, I'm just going
- 3:10Speaker 8: to let it roll, and we will get into this
- 3:11Speaker 8: week's episode with Ben's Killer Five.
- 3:25Speaker 4: It's time for the Killer Five.
- 3:34Speaker 9: We're here with Ben and Dave from Tower of Technobabble.
- 3:37Speaker 13: Hey, Brian.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Hi.
- 3:39Speaker 8: We're going to go over some of our soundtrack choices. So, yeah,
- 3:43Speaker 8: we'll divide them up.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Have you explained the bit? Have you explained the bit?
- 3:47Speaker 7: Explained the bit.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 8: To you?
- 3:50Speaker 1: To the audience.
- 3:50Speaker 9: They're listening to it, so I'm assuming they'll already know.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Oh, do they know? Okay, all right.
- 3:54Speaker 14: Cool.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Well, explain it again to me just so I get
- 3:57Speaker 1: the right context.
- 3:59Speaker 8: In this segment, we're going to discuss, you know, basically,
- 4:02Speaker 8: since we talked to so many people out there in
- 4:04Speaker 8: the world anyway, of all different varying, you know, movie
- 4:07Speaker 8: geeks to people involved in the industry, I thought we'd
- 4:10Speaker 8: just sort of ask people what they're into music-wise that
- 4:15Speaker 8: is still like movie.
- 4:16Speaker 9: It's sort of much like the show, focuses on.
- 4:19Speaker 8: The movie music thing and how both the songs that
- 4:24Speaker 8: get featured in there and the scores kind of you
- 4:29Speaker 8: get attached to them. Or vice versa. Sometimes it shapes
- 4:32Speaker 8: the movie, the fact that that's in there.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Thank you, because I thought I maybe, I might have
- 4:37Speaker 1: misunderstood what the assignment was.
- 4:39Speaker 9: It's a little of both of those.
- 4:41Speaker 7: This is all crap what I prepared.
- 4:42Speaker 15: Crap!
- 4:43Speaker 9: Well, we were going to think that eventually.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I actually have a list here.
- 4:47Speaker 8: But yeah, basically it's not even like, I won't even
- 4:49Speaker 8: make people pin down favorites, because I can't even pick favorites.
- 4:52Speaker 9: But just pick five that you think are cool or.
- 4:57Speaker 8: Maybe you hate and you want to make other people suffer,
- 4:59Speaker 8: but just stuff that you, you know, pick five that
- 5:01Speaker 8: you think are worth talking about and then why you
- 5:05Speaker 8: like them or don't and.
- 5:07Speaker 9: Got it.
- 5:07Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:08Speaker 9: Just your five that you want to put out there.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Oh, it could be something that you don't like.
- 5:11Speaker 16: It could be.
- 5:13Speaker 7: But I like everything because I'm a positive, sunny person.
- 5:15Speaker 8: Like.
- 5:16Speaker 1: everything musically in those Transformer movies. Got it. I'm ready.
- 5:20Speaker 7: Let's go.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Or even the 80s cartoon.
- 5:23Speaker 16: You got the touch!
- 5:25Speaker 9: That's a classic. Classic.
- 5:31Speaker 8: But yeah, basically just five songs that you would like.
- 5:35Speaker 9: To share with people.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Alrighty. Okay. Number one?
- 5:38Speaker 9: Okay, we'll ask this. Are they in... A specific order
- 5:42Speaker 9: or just random five?
- 5:43Speaker 1: They are in the order that I noticed them as
- 5:46Speaker 1: growing up. The first sort of musical thing... Like, you know,
- 5:50Speaker 1: when I was a kid, you'd watch the movies, and
- 5:52Speaker 1: music never really occurred to me. I never really noticed it.
- 5:57Speaker 1: The first time I ever noticed a song hand to
- 6:01Speaker 1: Oprah was that Lonely Goat heard song in Sound of Music.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Do you know what I'm talking about? Okay, when I
- 6:08Speaker 1: was a kid, it was like... Every year, the Sound
- 6:11Speaker 1: of Music would come on, and it was a big deal.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Because back in those days, it was before cable, before VCR.
- 6:17Speaker 1: People would rearrange their schedules. They would cancel their school
- 6:21Speaker 1: board meetings. Because you had to be home to watch
- 6:23Speaker 1: the four-hour Sound of Music.
- 6:24Speaker 9: We've discussed this. It's very similar with the annual Wizard
- 6:27Speaker 9: of Oz event.
- 6:28Speaker 1: And the annual Star Wars, you know. So, like... When
- 6:32Speaker 1: I was a kid, I just really liked the whole
- 6:35Speaker 1: Lonely Goat Herd song, because it was... Can you hum
- 6:37Speaker 1: some of it for us?
- 6:38Speaker 7: Because I haven't watched it. High on a hill, lonely
- 6:40Speaker 7: goat herd, lady, oh, lady, oh, lady.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And the thing that made it great, Conduit, was as
- 6:46Speaker 1: they were singing it, they were doing this little marionette
- 6:49Speaker 1: puppet show thing to it. And I think that's what
- 6:51Speaker 1: got me into it, because I didn't really like the movie,
- 6:54Speaker 1: because it was like lots of... flowery, over-the-top music, and
- 7:00Speaker 1: it was all about love and stuff.
- 7:02Speaker 7: Love and crap.
- 7:03Speaker 1: So what I would do is I would sit through
- 7:04Speaker 1: the movie for two hours, you know, going.
- 7:07Speaker 7: Through, climb every mountain.
- 7:09Speaker 1: You know, like all this over-the-top old lady singing just
- 7:14Speaker 1: to get to this three-minute moment of them playing with
- 7:18Speaker 1: toys and puppets, talking about little puppets drinking beer and
- 7:22Speaker 1: goats doing it. And it was just... It was my
- 7:25Speaker 1: favorite part.
- 7:26Speaker 7: That's where little birds come from, by the way.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And it was like I had to suffer through this entire,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and then whenever Rolf the Nazi turns on him and
- 7:37Speaker 1: all that. Spoiler. I had to sit through all this
- 7:40Speaker 1: just to get to the one good part with all
- 7:42Speaker 1: the little puppets. And I think that might be why
- 7:44Speaker 1: I kind of like stop motion because marionettes are beautiful.
- 7:49Speaker 1: In essence, kind of the same school, you know.
- 7:51Speaker 9: So really you just wanted to see him play with toys.
- 7:54Speaker 3: I did.
- 7:54Speaker 8: So if you would have watched a two-minute commercial, you
- 7:56Speaker 8: would have been saving like an extra.
- 7:58Speaker 9: Almost two hours worth of time to get that like,
- 8:01Speaker 9: you know, little couple.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Of minutes of toys. As a little kid. And, you know,
- 8:05Speaker 1: the song, it's very hummable. It's very dum-dum-dum-dum. It sort
- 8:09Speaker 1: of spoke to my German roots, you know. Kind of
- 8:12Speaker 1: like an oom-pah feel to it. It's very Teutonic. As
- 8:15Speaker 1: a kid, I just remember thinking, why isn't the whole
- 8:18Speaker 1: movie like this?
- 8:19Speaker 7: Why do I have to sit through, how do you
- 8:22Speaker 7: solve a problem like this?
- 8:24Speaker 9: Not even the right music.
- 8:27Speaker 1: By the way, is this going to cost you money?
- 8:29Speaker 1: Am I getting you into some copyright problems? No, you've
- 8:31Speaker 1: got to sing it for 30 seconds.
- 8:32Speaker 13: Okay, good, good.
- 8:32Speaker 9: And it has to be recognizable.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I had to sit through Julie Andrews analyzing her feelings
- 8:38Speaker 1: just to get to the really kind of fun part.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And my mom actually had the soundtrack on a vinyl record.
- 8:46Speaker 1: And I would always play the Lonely Goat Herd song.
- 8:50Speaker 1: It was just something about it. I loved it.
- 8:51Speaker 7: Until I finally said, Ben, stop playing the Lonely Goat
- 8:54Speaker 7: Herd song.
- 8:55Speaker 3: So, yeah.
- 8:56Speaker 1: If you were to see this record today. pristine, except
- 9:00Speaker 1: for the one little bit where the lonely girl turns.
- 9:02Speaker 9: Right here, just beat the hell.
- 9:04Speaker 1: It looks like the trench on the Death Star. That's
- 9:07Speaker 1: how much I wore it out. So that was number one.
- 9:10Speaker 1: That was the first time I ever noticed a song,
- 9:12Speaker 1: a specific song in a movie.
- 9:17Speaker 5: High on a hill was a lonely goat, heard lay, hoot, lay, hoot, lay, hoo.
- 9:22Speaker 17: Loud was the voice of the lonely goat, heard lay, hoot, lay, hoot, loo.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Folks in a town that was quite remote, heard lay, hoot, lay, hoot, lay, hoo.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Lusty and clear from the goat's throat, heard lay, hoot, lay, hoot, loo.
- 9:53Speaker 16: A prince on the bridge of a castle moat.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Heard lay, o'd lay, o'd lay, o'd lay.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Men on a road with a load to tug heard lay,
- 10:01Speaker 5: o'd lay, o'd lay.
- 10:03Speaker 13: Men in the midst of a troubled dote heard lay,
- 10:05Speaker 13: o'd lay, o'd lay.
- 10:07Speaker 8: Men drinking beer with a foam of float heard lay,
- 10:10Speaker 8: o'd lay, o'd lay.
- 10:22Speaker 5: One little girl in a pale pink coat heard lay-ho-da-lay-ho-da-lay-hoo
- 10:26Speaker 5: She yodeled back to the lonely goat heard lay-ho-da-lay-ho-loo.
- 10:31Speaker 15: Soon her mama with a gleaming gloat heard.
- 10:33Speaker 18: Lay-ho-da-lay-ho-da-lay-hoo What a duet for a girl and goat.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Heard lay-ho-da-lay-ho-loo Music.
- 11:26Speaker 5: One little girl in a pale pink coat.
- 11:28Speaker 16: Lady, oh, lady, oh, lady.
- 11:31Speaker 3: She yodeled back to the lonely goat head. Lady, oh, lady, oh, lady.
- 11:35Speaker 9: Soon her mama with a gleaming gloat heard.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Lady, oh, lady, oh, lady.
- 11:40Speaker 9: What did you ask for a girl.
- 11:42Speaker 16: And goat head? Lady, oh, lady, oh, lady.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Happy a day, lady, oh, lady, oh. Oh, lady, oh, lady, lady, oh.
- 11:50Speaker 16: And you asked for the karma trio.
- 11:52Speaker 1: This says a lot about you, the lonely goat.
- 12:18Speaker 7: Why is it every podcast we wind up psychoanalyzing Ben?
- 12:21Speaker 1: He asks for it?
- 12:22Speaker 19: You all seem to be suffering from a mild form
- 12:26Speaker 19: of hysteria.
- 12:28Speaker 16: You are such a geek.
- 12:32Speaker 14: Way to go, Egghead.
- 12:36Speaker 4: Geek.
- 12:37Speaker 1: What is a geek? My number two. I'm a little
- 12:40Speaker 1: bit older now. Let's see. I really got into the
- 12:45Speaker 1: Star Trek movies. At what point was this? It was
- 12:50Speaker 1: actually the movie that got me into it was The
- 12:54Speaker 1: Voyage Home. I kind of wasn't a Star Trek fan,
- 13:00Speaker 1: but for some reason, my parents actually took me to
- 13:02Speaker 1: see The Voyage Home, and I really got into it,
- 13:04Speaker 1: and so I started going backwards. You're going to.
- 13:08Speaker 7: Say something about the space hippies, aren't you?
- 13:10Speaker 1: No. I don't know how we got it, but somehow
- 13:14Speaker 1: we had a videotape of Star Trek 3 the search
- 13:21Speaker 1: for Spock and I really found that I was something
- 13:28Speaker 1: about the music the really cinematic orchestra music by the
- 13:33Speaker 1: way I'm totally avoiding Star Wars I'm not going to
- 13:35Speaker 1: talk about that but this was this was a movie
- 13:38Speaker 1: where I'm talking specifically about the scene where they steal
- 13:42Speaker 1: the Enterprise that long kind of 15-20 minute scene you
- 13:45Speaker 1: know And I just really liked how the music was
- 13:49Speaker 1: making it more exciting. And essentially, you're watching a very
- 13:53Speaker 1: slow model backing up at two miles an hour. But
- 13:57Speaker 1: the music just made it. Like, what I actually did,
- 14:03Speaker 1: I loved that scene so much. And I began to
- 14:06Speaker 1: realize it was because of the music. I was loving
- 14:09Speaker 1: how the music was punctuating the action, making it really emotional.
- 14:13Speaker 1: I actually got my little tape recorder, put it up
- 14:16Speaker 1: in front of the TV speaker. I recorded onto cassette
- 14:20Speaker 1: that 20, 15 minute stretch from the moment where Lieutenant
- 14:25Speaker 1: Hura turns her phaser on the guy at the transporter, like,
- 14:28Speaker 1: this is fantasy, you want an adventure, whatever, you know,
- 14:30Speaker 1: get in the closet. From that moment up until the
- 14:33Speaker 1: moment where Scotty gives Dr. McCoy the spark plugs from
- 14:37Speaker 1: the Excelsior. And I would play that bit over and over.
- 14:40Speaker 7: Keep in mind, kids, this is when you had to
- 14:42Speaker 7: tape record stuff off the TV. You didn't have your
- 14:44Speaker 7: DVDs and your Netflixes.
- 14:47Speaker 9: I'm glad I'm not the only one that did that,
- 14:49Speaker 9: because I did that with Star Wars.
- 14:50Speaker 1: And several other movies. And, you know, later on in life,
- 14:53Speaker 1: I actually, somehow I got a copy of the Star
- 14:55Speaker 1: Trek III soundtrack, and I didn't like it. Because it
- 14:59Speaker 1: was all, it didn't have any of the dialogue, it
- 15:02Speaker 1: didn't have any of the sound effects. And the music,
- 15:04Speaker 1: it was like the whole piece. So I could kind
- 15:08Speaker 1: of remember, okay, this is when the Starship's backing out.
- 15:10Speaker 1: And it just wasn't as exciting because it was cut
- 15:14Speaker 1: together and edited in a way on my tape. So
- 15:17Speaker 1: this was kind of like a gateway drug to me.
- 15:19Speaker 1: I began to think maybe I like orchestra music. So
- 15:22Speaker 1: I tried to listen to classical music and stuff. It
- 15:25Speaker 1: didn't affect me the same way. And I think it's
- 15:26Speaker 1: because I needed sound effects. I needed like warp stuff
- 15:31Speaker 1: going on. It was just so much exciting with the music.
- 15:34Speaker 1: So I don't know. So that little bit from Star
- 15:36Speaker 1: Trek 3.
- 15:36Speaker 7: Even Starship's backing up to really sell the deal.
- 15:40Speaker 9: So listening to the song just isn't going to do
- 15:42Speaker 9: it for you.
- 15:43Speaker 1: No, no. I kind of needed the whole thing.
- 15:45Speaker 5: Oh, well, that's too bad. Thank you.
- 17:39Speaker 3: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. We'll be right back.
- 21:42Speaker 11: Oh, my God.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 23:30Speaker 1: But then, isn't that kind of what the movie is? Like,
- 23:32Speaker 1: a movie takes music, sound effects, dialogue, drama, mushes them
- 23:36Speaker 1: all together.
- 23:37Speaker 9: Yeah, and it's funny how much, like you said, how
- 23:40Speaker 9: much that changes it, and like, you know, you would
- 23:42Speaker 9: have been.
- 23:42Speaker 8: Bored by just the ship backing up, but just adding
- 23:45Speaker 8: that element to it makes it a whole different experience.
- 23:48Speaker 1: And as I got older, I began to notice that
- 23:51Speaker 1: they were using the same music from Star Trek 2
- 23:55Speaker 1: in Star Trek 3, but They kind of added more
- 23:58Speaker 1: orchestra bits to it. In Star Trek II, it's the
- 24:01Speaker 1: same melodies, but it's a little bit thinner. They didn't
- 24:04Speaker 1: have as full of an orchestra. In Star Trek III,
- 24:09Speaker 1: it was sweeping and emotional. I haven't felt this way
- 24:12Speaker 1: since The Lonely Goat Heard. Oh, my God.
- 24:15Speaker 7: Imagine if The Lonely Goat Heard backed up. Oh, my God.
- 24:19Speaker 8: There's a joke there that I'm not even going to finish.
- 24:22Speaker 16: Times have changed.
- 24:23Speaker 17: In the past 30 years, Tomas, we no longer swill
- 24:26Speaker 17: sherry and screw goats for fun anymore.

- 24:57Speaker 11: Sounds better.
- 25:13Speaker 6: This is Hunter Carson, and you're listening to me have
- 25:16Speaker 6: a meltdown.
- 25:17Speaker 4: On Movie Meltdown.
- 25:25Speaker 1: All right, number three here? Okay, next one would be
- 25:28Speaker 1: Hard Day's Night, the Beatle movie. And at this point,
- 25:33Speaker 1: I was getting into music. I was learning how to
- 25:36Speaker 1: play bass. And the great thing about that movie was
- 25:42Speaker 1: it showed the Beatles playing, and it wasn't like a
- 25:45Speaker 1: video where they would be showing a story or something.
- 25:49Speaker 1: It actually showed them playing their instruments. And I just
- 25:54Speaker 1: spent a lot of time watching their hands, like how
- 25:56Speaker 1: they were moving, and it kind of, as I was
- 26:00Speaker 1: trying to learn bass, it was really kind of an
- 26:03Speaker 1: inspiration because it just seems so simple but complicated at
- 26:07Speaker 1: the same time. And that and the whole movie, the
- 26:12Speaker 1: whole plot of the movie is the Beatles are going
- 26:13Speaker 1: to go, they're going to play a show, and then
- 26:16Speaker 1: they leave.
- 26:18Speaker 9: The Beatles are going to be the Beatles.
- 26:19Speaker 1: That's the plot of the movie. And the music, it
- 26:23Speaker 1: was just a great period for them where the music
- 26:25Speaker 1: was really good. But I spent many happy hours just
- 26:30Speaker 1: watching it and studying it and trying to unlock the key,
- 26:35Speaker 1: the secret to what makes a good band a good band,
- 26:38Speaker 1: what makes a good bass player a good bass player.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Turns out it's talent. You really need that. Well, that's
- 26:44Speaker 1: no good.
- 26:46Speaker 9: Was there a specific song... Was.
- 26:48Speaker 8: There one that highlighted the bass more?
- 26:51Speaker 1: Yes, there was a song called And I Love Her,
- 26:54Speaker 1: and it stood out to me because it was so easy.
- 26:57Speaker 1: And basically, Paul McCartney is singing it, and he's standing there,
- 27:01Speaker 1: and it's just this kind of simple bass line. It
- 27:04Speaker 1: was simple enough for him to sing, for him to
- 27:08Speaker 1: sing lead on, and it looks simple enough to where
- 27:11Speaker 1: I could be like, I bet I could do that.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Because it was just a couple of notes, but the
- 27:15Speaker 1: way that it was played... made it essential to the
- 27:19Speaker 1: whole song.
- 27:29Speaker 20: I give her all my love That's all I do.
- 27:38Speaker 17: And if you saw my love.
- 27:42Speaker 16: You'd love her too.
- 27:45Speaker 3: I love her.
- 27:51Speaker 6: She gives me everything And.
- 27:56Speaker 20: Tenderly The kiss my lover brings She brings to me
- 28:08Speaker 20: And I love her.
- 28:14Speaker 17: A love like ours.
- 28:18Speaker 18: Could never die.
- 28:23Speaker 3: As long as.
- 28:25Speaker 14: I have you near me.
- 28:45Speaker 16: I'll never die And.
- 28:48Speaker 3: I loved her.
- 29:22Speaker 17: I know this love of mine will never die.
- 29:33Speaker 4: And I love her.
- 29:53Speaker 1: There was a lot of slow sweeping camera moves showing
- 29:56Speaker 1: the fingering and all that. It was cool. I watched
- 30:00Speaker 1: that over and over and over. Like, a lot of
- 30:02Speaker 1: people will say, you know, like, I guess in our age,
- 30:08Speaker 1: you know, like more modern bands got them into it.
- 30:10Speaker 1: But seriously, it was Hard Day's Night that made me
- 30:12Speaker 1: want to play bass because it actually looked doable.
- 30:19Speaker 9: These simpletons can do it. They'll never amount to anything.
- 30:22Speaker 7: You will believe a man can play a bass.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Hey, that's in black and white. I'm going to do
- 30:26Speaker 1: it in color.
- 30:27Speaker 9: I'm going to be a real rock star. Those guys,
- 30:29Speaker 9: they'll never amount to anything.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Yeah, it was cool. All right, number four. The only
- 30:37Speaker 1: Japanese animation or anime, as people in the know say,
- 30:41Speaker 1: was an animation called Cowboy Bebop. Have you ever heard that?
- 30:45Speaker 8: I have seen some of it, and it's one of
- 30:49Speaker 8: those I was not big into anime, and I saw
- 30:51Speaker 8: that and went.
- 30:52Speaker 9: Oh, it can be pretty good. I was amazed how
- 30:55Speaker 9: much I liked it.
- 30:56Speaker 1: I sort of see Cowboy Bebop. As the way I
- 30:59Speaker 1: see Tolkien and fantasy. I loved Tolkien. I loved Tolkien.
- 31:05Speaker 1: When I was a kid, I read it. I loved it.
- 31:07Speaker 1: So I was like, ooh, I should try some of
- 31:08Speaker 1: these other books with sorcerers and dragons on the cover.
- 31:11Speaker 1: And they sucked! So I was like, I just like Tolkien.
- 31:16Speaker 1: So the Cowboy Bebop, the anime was so good, I'd
- 31:19Speaker 1: try others. But the thing about the music in Cowboy
- 31:24Speaker 1: Bebop was it was jazz. Up until that point, I
- 31:29Speaker 1: really didn't like jazz. Whenever I would hear jazz, it
- 31:32Speaker 1: always sounded like public radio, slow, kind of boring. But
- 31:38Speaker 1: this was like violent jazz. It was visceral. That's a
- 31:43Speaker 1: good word for it, actually, visceral. The opening theme song,
- 31:48Speaker 1: for the show was actually called Tank. The song was
- 31:52Speaker 1: called Tank. It was really fast paced and you could
- 31:59Speaker 1: hear the guy straining to reach the notes on the
- 32:02Speaker 1: upright bass. It was a way to make something exciting
- 32:07Speaker 1: that was different from what I was used to. I
- 32:10Speaker 1: was used to cinematic John Williams making space exciting. But
- 32:16Speaker 1: this was more I don't know, foreign in a weird way,
- 32:20Speaker 1: which is odd because jazz... Came from here. Came from here,
- 32:23Speaker 1: but it took this Japanese animation to make me really
- 32:27Speaker 1: interested in.
- 32:27Speaker 3: I.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Don't know if you're going to keep it at just movies,
- 32:33Speaker 1: but they actually did a full-length Cowboy Bebop movie, and
- 32:38Speaker 1: they got a lot of this jazz in there too,
- 32:41Speaker 1: but specifically it was their theme song, Tank. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 32:46Speaker 8: Play that stock record scratchy noise.
- 32:49Speaker 9: Yeah, that's what this situation calls for. All right, I'm
- 32:51Speaker 9: going to have to call a technical foul on Ben here. Now,
- 32:55Speaker 9: you hear him.
- 32:56Speaker 8: He goes on about this, and everything else he says
- 32:59Speaker 8: is right, and he is correct that they did make
- 33:03Speaker 8: a Cowboy Bebop movie, but where he was mistaken is
- 33:06Speaker 8: he thought they also played the song Tank in the movie.
- 33:11Speaker 8: And very quickly, I went back and double checked and
- 33:13Speaker 8: I emailed him. I'm like, hey, you're totally wrong.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Way to go.
- 33:17Speaker 8: Now, I knew as soon as I set up a
- 33:18Speaker 8: basic idea of how these episodes would work, people would
- 33:22Speaker 8: start trying to make their own little adjustments or work
- 33:26Speaker 8: something in there that didn't specifically fit. Now, I will
- 33:29Speaker 8: be a stickler for the details and tell people when
- 33:32Speaker 8: something isn't from a soundtrack, like the majority of the
- 33:35Speaker 8: stuff we play is.
- 33:36Speaker 9: But rules are made to be broken. And on this show,
- 33:39Speaker 9: I rule.
- 33:40Speaker 8: So I have decided that I am going to go
- 33:43Speaker 8: ahead and play Tank, even though it's not on the
- 33:45Speaker 8: film soundtrack, but because more importantly.
- 33:48Speaker 4: It's an awesome song.
- 33:51Speaker 9: It kicks so much ass.
- 33:52Speaker 8: So with that, I am going to go ahead and
- 33:55Speaker 8: play Tank. And then just to keep it balanced later,
- 33:58Speaker 8: I'm going to have to come back and make an adjustment.
- 34:00Speaker 8: You know, he's only got four out of five technically
- 34:02Speaker 8: from a film soundtrack, so maybe I'll fix it later.
- 34:06Speaker 8: But for now, we are gonna go ahead and play
- 34:08Speaker 8: Tank from the opening of Cowboy Bebop.
- 34:28Speaker 12: I think it's time to blow this scene, get everybody
- 34:30Speaker 12: and the stuff together.
- 34:32Speaker 11: Okay, three, two, one, let's jam.
- 35:21Speaker 3: Thank you. I'm just it.
- 37:38Speaker 1: It really got me excited just every time I heard it.
- 37:41Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, I want to go beat up people.
- 37:47Speaker 3: In space.
- 37:48Speaker 9: I like that that's your motivation.
- 37:52Speaker 1: And the last movie with music was The Commitments. And
- 37:57Speaker 1: The Commitments, I saw that like if Hard Day's Night
- 38:01Speaker 1: kind of inspired me to learn bass and to play bass,
- 38:04Speaker 1: Commitments is when I kind of knew what what what
- 38:07Speaker 1: i was doing and it it kind of just um
- 38:12Speaker 1: it's just really good music and um it's it's about
- 38:16Speaker 1: a irish soul band basically and there's one particular song
- 38:20Speaker 1: in there called um um why am i going blank.
- 38:26Speaker 9: Which one i think i know most of.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Them oh she make me i can do the bass
- 38:31Speaker 1: line for you Try a little tenderness. Try a little tenderness,
- 38:34Speaker 1: thank you. I don't know why I was blanking on that.
- 38:38Speaker 7: Teaser, pleaser, you got to, you got to, you got to.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you.
- 38:42Speaker 8: Let's just perform it now.
- 38:45Speaker 5: Oh, she may be weary.
- 38:49Speaker 18: And young girls, they do get weary.
- 38:54Speaker 6: Wearing that same old shaggy.
- 38:59Speaker 21: Dress But when she gets weary, try.
- 39:13Speaker 18: A little tenderness.
- 39:27Speaker 6: You know she's waiting. just anticipating the things that she never, never, never,
- 39:41Speaker 6: never possesses yet.
- 39:44Speaker 13: But while she's there waiting without a hope, try a
- 39:54Speaker 13: little tenderness.
- 39:57Speaker 16: That's all you gotta do.
- 39:59Speaker 3: This is for you.
- 40:05Speaker 6: It's not just sentimental.
- 40:11Speaker 3: No, no.
- 40:14Speaker 6: She has her grief and.
- 40:19Speaker 3: Her care.
- 40:23Speaker 18: But soft words They all.
- 40:27Speaker 6: Spoke so gentle It makes.
- 40:32Speaker 22: It easier Easier to bear.
- 40:43Speaker 23: You won't regret it, no, no Young girls, they never
- 40:47Speaker 23: forget it Love is their only.
- 40:54Speaker 22: Happiness But it isn't so easy.
- 41:00Speaker 16: All you gotta.
- 41:04Speaker 22: Do is try to live your time today.
- 41:09Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Squeeze her. Squeeze her. Never leave her.
- 41:20Speaker 3: You got to. You got to.
- 41:23Speaker 5: You got to. You got to. Try to live it.
- 41:41Speaker 5: .
- 41:42Speaker 3: .
- 41:46Speaker 5: .
- 41:52Speaker 3: .
- 41:55Speaker 6: .
- 42:00Speaker 3: Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
- 42:09Speaker 24: Yeah!
- 42:10Speaker 3: Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
- 43:00Speaker 1: It was interesting because, again, kind of like how jazz
- 43:04Speaker 1: music came from this country, but I didn't really notice
- 43:06Speaker 1: it until I saw a Japanese movie. I'm embarrassed to
- 43:10Speaker 1: say that soul music, which kind of came from America,
- 43:12Speaker 1: I didn't really get into it until this movie. Through
- 43:15Speaker 1: the eyes of weird Irish guys. Through the eyes of
- 43:18Speaker 1: a foreign country who appreciate what was born in this country,
- 43:25Speaker 1: but they kind of put this spin on it that
- 43:27Speaker 1: makes me suddenly notice it. I can't put my finger
- 43:30Speaker 1: on what it was, but as a bass player at
- 43:33Speaker 1: that point, I was just really in love with how Again,
- 43:38Speaker 1: it seemed simple, but it really, really wasn't. And that song,
- 43:42Speaker 1: Try a Little Tenderness, it starts out slow, it builds,
- 43:46Speaker 1: it builds, and it just gets to this neat crescendo.
- 43:49Speaker 1: And that's a movie I really paid attention to a lot.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Also because since by that point I was in a band,
- 43:56Speaker 1: I can say hand to heart, that is the most
- 43:59Speaker 1: realistic band movie you will ever see.
- 44:01Speaker 9: Because all they do is fight.
- 44:03Speaker 1: I won't spoil the ending, but... 99.99999% of bands kind
- 44:09Speaker 1: of turn out that way. That's my list.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Hurrah!
- 44:16Speaker 8: That album takes what are already amazing songs and somehow.
- 44:21Speaker 9: It lives up to all of them.
- 44:24Speaker 8: You would think nobody could do that good, especially a
- 44:27Speaker 8: bunch of dorky kids in Ireland, but they find a
- 44:29Speaker 8: way to do these interpretations of them that are really impressive.
- 44:34Speaker 1: And I think something else, too, was by getting the soundtrack,
- 44:40Speaker 1: I had, again, this is before there was the Internet.
- 44:43Speaker 1: You could just download songs here and there. By getting
- 44:45Speaker 1: the soundtrack, I sort of had a best-of sampler of soul.
- 44:51Speaker 9: Intro to blues and R & B.
- 44:53Speaker 1: And because at that time, whenever I would hear the
- 44:56Speaker 1: phrase R & B, it would always be applied to
- 44:58Speaker 1: people like, Mariah Carey, which I didn't really find that interesting, honestly.
- 45:04Speaker 7: It's neither R nor B.
- 45:05Speaker 9: She's a little off.
- 45:07Speaker 1: But whenever you would watch the Grammys, she'd be up
- 45:09Speaker 1: for Best R & B. So I didn't associate R
- 45:13Speaker 1: & B with that. But this was pure old-school soul,
- 45:19Speaker 1: and I just love it. I still love it. And
- 45:22Speaker 1: I'm actually looking for a soul band to join. So
- 45:24Speaker 1: if anyone out there is wanting to start up a
- 45:25Speaker 1: soul band.
- 45:26Speaker 9: I'm up for that.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Let's go.
- 45:27Speaker 23: All right.
- 45:28Speaker 1: On it.
- 45:28Speaker 7: I'll play the washboard.
- 45:29Speaker 16: I'm going to teach you the meaning of commitment.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Dave, I do not get superheroes.
- 45:34Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 45:35Speaker 1: I don't get you. What don't you get?
- 45:37Speaker 10: Towerbot here. Well, the meatbags were going to say that
- 45:42Speaker 10: if you're a geek and like podcasts, then you could
- 45:44Speaker 10: try Tower of Technobabble at www.toweroftechnobabble.com. Then this started.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Well, it's up to you.
- 45:54Speaker 10: I'm gonna get my taser and put a stop to this.
- 45:57Speaker 10: Tower bot out.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Okay, monkeys. It's nap time.
- 46:07Speaker 8: Alright, and now for the other barrel in our double
- 46:09Speaker 8: shot of the killer five, we are going to continue.
- 46:12Speaker 1: On with Dave's picks.
- 46:22Speaker 4: It's time for the kill of five.
- 46:29Speaker 8: What are your important songs that you'd like to share
- 46:32Speaker 8: with the world?
- 46:33Speaker 7: Let me preface this by saying that I didn't get
- 46:35Speaker 7: this assignment until right before the record button hit.
- 46:38Speaker 8: Again, it doesn't have to be favorites of all time.
- 46:41Speaker 8: We don't have to pin it down. Just five songs
- 46:43Speaker 8: that you'd like to share with us.
- 46:44Speaker 7: Well, I'm going to do a lot of that one
- 46:46Speaker 7: song by this guy.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Okay.
- 46:47Speaker 7: So just kind of hang with me here. And I
- 46:50Speaker 7: don't have Ben's well-thought-out reasoning. It's going to be much
- 46:54Speaker 7: more on the fly.
- 46:55Speaker 1: That was a slam.
- 46:56Speaker 9: You might not have known it, but I.
- 46:58Speaker 8: Well, you're crazy.
- 47:02Speaker 7: Okay, in no particular order, number one is the theme
- 47:06Speaker 7: to Superman, the 1978 Donner film.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 47:11Speaker 7: The way it builds, because it doesn't start. It just goes, dump, dump, dump.
- 47:20Speaker 7: It really builds. It gets a motion. It gets a momentum.
- 47:24Speaker 7: And with the title credits going, it just... And then
- 47:30Speaker 7: we've talked about this before. It's like every good Superman theme,
- 47:32Speaker 7: you can sing the word Superman in the theme.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Superman. Superman. Superman.
- 47:41Speaker 6: Superman.
- 47:42Speaker 1: You know, it's funny you say it because usually credits...
- 47:46Speaker 1: are the big the opening credits of the part i
- 47:47Speaker 1: hate the most i want to fast forward through it
- 47:50Speaker 1: but you're right superman is one of the ones where.
- 47:53Speaker 7: It is the start of the movie and we've talked
- 47:56Speaker 7: about this on our own podcast before but for some
- 47:58Speaker 7: reason that movie just seems bigger it's the way it's
- 48:02Speaker 7: shot it's the i don't know what the technology i
- 48:05Speaker 7: don't have the i don't have the words to really
- 48:07Speaker 7: explain what i'm richard donner yeah but for some reason
- 48:10Speaker 7: that movie just looks big even on like a tv
- 48:13Speaker 7: now i mean it doesn't even have to be in
- 48:14Speaker 7: the theater i like it But there's just something big
- 48:17Speaker 7: about that movie, which is perfect for the subject matter.
- 48:19Speaker 7: But that theme gets you in that mood from the
- 48:23Speaker 7: very beginning.
- 48:24Speaker 1: You know, it's funny. You say the way the theme starts,
- 48:27Speaker 1: it grabs your attention immediately, but then it slowly builds
- 48:31Speaker 1: and gets more. That's sort of how a movie should be.
- 48:34Speaker 11: Right.
- 48:34Speaker 1: That theme song is textbook Cliff Notes 101. This is
- 48:38Speaker 1: how you should make a movie. Make it like this
- 48:40Speaker 1: theme song. Grab your attention.
- 48:42Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 48:43Speaker 1: And then get the suspense and keep you on the
- 48:45Speaker 1: edge of your seat. Right.
- 49:18Speaker 3: Oh, no! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
- 53:07Speaker 8: I mean it is amazing it is one of those
- 53:08Speaker 8: that's held up like it's still like you can't name
- 53:12Speaker 8: most of the other theme songs.
- 53:14Speaker 9: What's the Wolverine theme?
- 53:16Speaker 15: Wolverine!
- 53:18Speaker 9: You know Superman. No matter how many bad movies they make.
- 53:22Speaker 16: You're not seeing the big picture here.
- 53:25Speaker 1: Who did the music for Superman? John Williams.
- 53:30Speaker 8: That one is just so recognizable to this day. You
- 53:33Speaker 8: can have whoever you want playing Superman now, but in
- 53:36Speaker 8: my head, that's the Superman music.
- 53:39Speaker 9: You can't Yeah.
- 53:40Speaker 7: Well, the other thing is, I mean, I saw, let's say,
- 53:42Speaker 7: Iron Man 3. I saw that last week. I couldn't
- 53:44Speaker 7: tell you what that thing was.
- 53:45Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 53:45Speaker 7: There's nothing wrong with it. It wasn't anything bad.
- 53:47Speaker 1: It was just not memorable. Not memorable.
- 53:49Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 53:50Speaker 7: But, you know, for 30 years ago, I can still.
- 53:52Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, it's funny. After Star Wars came out,
- 53:57Speaker 1: I think a case could be made that a lot
- 54:00Speaker 1: of the guys in Hollywood, you know, they wanted to
- 54:04Speaker 1: do the special effects like Lucas. They wanted to, you know,
- 54:06Speaker 1: they wanted to do the framework. I think a lot
- 54:09Speaker 1: of the musicians suddenly wanted to be John Williams overnight.
- 54:12Speaker 8: I mean, he was, he was movie music for that,
- 54:16Speaker 8: you know, and still kind of continues to be. At
- 54:20Speaker 8: least now, new people have sort of stepped up, but
- 54:22Speaker 8: at the time, there was nobody, like, recognizable. Like, nobody,
- 54:25Speaker 8: there were no composers in the modern era that were
- 54:28Speaker 8: a household name.
- 54:29Speaker 1: That was it.
- 54:30Speaker 9: Like, John Williams was it.
- 54:30Speaker 1: Right.
- 54:33Speaker 7: Okay, so, number two, we'll go the other direction. The
- 54:36Speaker 7: movie Once, and I can't, Once? Yeah, Once. It's a
- 54:40Speaker 7: story of a band in... Were they in Ireland? Yeah,
- 54:44Speaker 7: they were in Ireland.
- 54:47Speaker 1: I'm not familiar with this.
- 54:48Speaker 7: Look it up, kids. Well, it's Glenn Hansford and.
- 54:51Speaker 3: I.
- 54:53Speaker 7: Can't remember what the girl's name is. See, that one girl?
- 54:57Speaker 1: Do you have your iPhone?
- 54:59Speaker 7: It came out a few years ago. Falling Slowly, that
- 55:02Speaker 7: was the song from it.
- 55:05Speaker 5: I don't know you, but I want you All the
- 55:13Speaker 5: more for that Words fall.
- 55:20Speaker 2: Through me and always fool me And I can't react.
- 55:33Speaker 24: Games that never amount to more than they're meant will
- 55:41Speaker 24: play themselves out.
- 55:50Speaker 5: Take their St. Kimball and point.
- 55:57Speaker 3: It home.
- 55:58Speaker 5: We've still got time. I've had the choice, you've made
- 56:14Speaker 5: it now.
- 56:21Speaker 2: Falling slowly, eyes that know me And I can't go
- 56:31Speaker 2: back Wounds that take me and.
- 56:40Speaker 5: Erase me and I'm painted black.
- 56:49Speaker 24: You have suffered enough and warred with yourself.
- 56:58Speaker 16: It's time that you walk.
- 57:07Speaker 3: Take this St.
- 57:09Speaker 5: Kimball and pour it home. We've still got time. Raise
- 57:22Speaker 5: your hopeful voice. Take their St. Campbell's out Let's slowly
- 58:21Speaker 5: sing your melody out.
- 59:18Speaker 7: These people basically scraped up the money to get a recording.
- 59:22Speaker 7: They were trying to get a recording deal, but they
- 59:24Speaker 7: had to get a demo reel. And so they scraped
- 59:26Speaker 7: up enough money to get in a studio, and basically
- 59:28Speaker 7: they just got in a studio after hours and just
- 59:30Speaker 7: jammed out an album overnight. And at the end of
- 59:33Speaker 7: the night, the engineer says, okay, you sound good on
- 59:38Speaker 7: these $ 50, 000 speakers in the studio. Let's take this CD,
- 59:42Speaker 7: go out to my crap car and listen to it
- 59:44Speaker 7: in my crap speakers.
- 59:46Speaker 20: Nice.
- 59:46Speaker 7: And if it still sounds good, then we know we
- 59:48Speaker 7: got a hit. But it was just the feeling of
- 59:51Speaker 7: getting in a car and listening to something you've done
- 59:53Speaker 7: all night and listening to the fruits of your labor.
- 59:58Speaker 7: It's the way it's shot. It's the way it is.
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: But I can imagine a band doing that. I mean,
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: just getting in the car and driving.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: I will tell you that that is actually still... still
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: done they you basically make the recording you go out
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: and you get in your car and you drive around
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: and you listen to it yeah.
- 1:00:13Speaker 7: So i mean that's spot on but it was just
- 1:00:16Speaker 7: it's not it was it wasn't the song particularly that
- 1:00:18Speaker 7: they were listening to but it was it was the
- 1:00:20Speaker 7: music the feeling of the music i mean that whole
- 1:00:23Speaker 7: movie is it's about musicians so that the music is
- 1:00:27Speaker 7: a character in the story almost um that point of
- 1:00:30Speaker 7: the music sort.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: Of like how the theme to jaws was almost a
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: character in the movie too exactly Hope I didn't take
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: one of yours by saying Jaws. Damn it!
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: No, but that would have been a good one.
- 1:00:42Speaker 9: Again, much like the last John Williams. I mean, he's
- 1:00:46Speaker 9: not a bad composer.
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: No, I think he'll be good. I think he's got
- 1:00:50Speaker 7: good works ahead of him.
- 1:00:51Speaker 9: One of these days, he's going to put out a
- 1:00:53Speaker 9: really memorable tune.
- 1:00:54Speaker 7: He's going places.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: It's funny. There's a Mystery Science Theater movie where he
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: did the music. Was it... It wasn't Tatio, was it?
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: Or was it.
- 1:01:03Speaker 7: Oh, John... Where.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: And it's just, you see his name come up in
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: the credits, and it's just amazing.
- 1:01:17Speaker 7: Number three, it's the movie Crossroads.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait. The Ralph Macchio or the
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Britney Spears?
- 1:01:27Speaker 7: I'll give you a hint. I'm not a girl, but
- 1:01:29Speaker 7: not quite.
- 1:01:31Speaker 9: So you like girls, thus the Britney Spears. All right.
- 1:01:35Speaker 7: No, it's actually the other one.
- 1:01:36Speaker 8: I want to mix the two, and I want to
- 1:01:38Speaker 8: see Britney Spears playing slide guitar. Can we make that happen?
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: I want to see Britney make her deal with the devil.
- 1:01:44Speaker 9: I think she did.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Become a pop star known all over the world. That
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: would never happen unless the devil was there at the crossroads.
- 1:01:55Speaker 9: I think she did, and her time came, and she
- 1:01:57Speaker 9: paid for it.
- 1:02:00Speaker 7: Your golden hair will be shorn by your own hand.
- 1:02:06Speaker 23: Yeah, sure, whatever.
- 1:02:10Speaker 7: Anyway, no, I'm talking about the Ralph Macchio movie. About
- 1:02:13Speaker 7: a young white boy who wants to play the blues
- 1:02:15Speaker 7: and actually kind of does well at it.
- 1:02:17Speaker 9: If you make a.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: Deal with the devil.
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: Anyway, basically he's trying to win his mentor's soul back
- 1:02:24Speaker 7: from the devil by having a... It's called Cutting Heads,
- 1:02:28Speaker 7: a guitar... competition with the devil's advocate, who in this
- 1:02:32Speaker 7: case is Steve Vai.
- 1:02:33Speaker 9: I haven't seen that in forever, but yeah, I was like,
- 1:02:36Speaker 9: isn't that Steve Vai?
- 1:02:37Speaker 7: I'm trying to think, who was the guy who actually
- 1:02:38Speaker 7: played the guitar? It wasn't Ralph Macchio. You mean the
- 1:02:41Speaker 7: older guy? No, he wasn't in the.
- 1:02:43Speaker 9: They went out on the actual soundtrack.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: It actually might have been Steve Vai, honestly.
- 1:02:47Speaker 7: Well, he played his, but.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: No, but I think Steve Vai may have done the
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: Ralph Macchio bits, too.
- 1:02:52Speaker 7: Google! Ry Cooter.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: There we go.
- 1:02:58Speaker 20: Oh, okay.
- 1:02:58Speaker 7: Thank goodness.
- 1:02:59Speaker 9: There we go.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: I thought you meant at the very end when they
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: were doing that.
- 1:03:02Speaker 7: Yeah, but the Rye Cooter is actually playing.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Oh, okay, okay.
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: It's a soundtrack.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: Right, okay.
- 1:03:06Speaker 7: But that's another movie that the music plays such a
- 1:03:09Speaker 7: big part of. And the music is actually the weapon
- 1:03:13Speaker 7: in the end of it. And it's a very interesting
- 1:03:16Speaker 7: use of the music. And they have such two different styles.
- 1:03:19Speaker 7: The Rye Cooter slash Ralph Macchio bit is much more blues-based,
- 1:03:24Speaker 7: much more... you know, slide guitar, even though they, it
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: gets faster and faster. It's still in that genre. Whereas
- 1:03:29Speaker 7: Levi is much more of the heavy metal rock.
- 1:03:33Speaker 8: It was interesting watching those two again, because they're such different,
- 1:03:36Speaker 8: different and distinctive styles, like trying to pit them against
- 1:03:41Speaker 8: each other is weird, but in the way that they
- 1:03:43Speaker 8: do it, where they almost have to play the same thing,
- 1:03:46Speaker 8: but he does it in blues style and he plays
- 1:03:48Speaker 8: it in heavy metal style. And it is interesting to
- 1:03:50Speaker 8: watch that same piece of music, like get, shoved into
- 1:03:53Speaker 8: these two different machines, more or less.
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: Right, and basically the way it rises, each round rises
- 1:03:59Speaker 7: in tempo.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:00Speaker 7: It's an interesting mix of music.
- 1:04:04Speaker 23: This is the mojo hand, the Louisiana voodoo charm.
- 1:04:09Speaker 9: The winning boy's magic.
- 1:04:11Speaker 16: You see, there's only one last true.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: Mojo left in the world.
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: Take it right now. Take it and go up there
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: and do your stuff.
- 1:04:20Speaker 16: I'm giving you.
- 1:04:21Speaker 11: All the magic I've got.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: What shall I do?
- 1:04:26Speaker 6: Then you can call upon your brother.
- 1:04:30Speaker 16: Who's next up there? Who's coming on up?
- 1:04:34Speaker 9: Who's going to get their head cut?
- 1:04:36Speaker 16: How about you, chicken boy?
- 1:04:38Speaker 11: Oh, my Lord, what shall I do?
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: What shall I do? Well, well, well.
- 1:04:55Speaker 9: Who sent you here?
- 1:04:57Speaker 16: Can't talk, little man?
- 1:04:58Speaker 23: That can't play none either.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Oh, huh. Thank you. Oh, my God. We'll be right back.
- 1:08:58Speaker 15: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Thank you.
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: So so Thank you.
- 1:11:35Speaker 9: Again, it's a better movie than I think people realize.
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: And it's... It's very, very quotable, too. I don't know.
- 1:11:42Speaker 18: Plus.
- 1:11:43Speaker 7: Hellhounds on your Twitter, Willie Brown.
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: Plus.
- 1:11:45Speaker 9: Jamie Girtz. I mean, come on.
- 1:11:46Speaker 7: Well, Jamie Girtz.
- 1:11:47Speaker 9: Anything with Jamie Girtz.
- 1:11:48Speaker 7: And it was Jamie Girtz of that era.
- 1:11:51Speaker 9: There ain't nothing wrong with that.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: If you kept your hands on that guitar as much
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: as you keep them on that there girl's ass, maybe
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: you'd be a guitar player by now.
- 1:12:02Speaker 8: But yeah, I think even more than anything, the finale
- 1:12:05Speaker 8: there makes that movie.
- 1:12:07Speaker 9: It really does bring.
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: It all together.
- 1:12:10Speaker 7: Number four, I'm going to go with the soundtrack to
- 1:12:12Speaker 7: Tron Legacy.
- 1:12:14Speaker 9: Really i've heard a lot of good things about that
- 1:12:16Speaker 9: i have not listened to.
- 1:12:17Speaker 7: Much of it is a a it stands alone you
- 1:12:20Speaker 7: can actually listen to it it's a if you're in
- 1:12:23Speaker 7: if you're in a techno kind of mood which you
- 1:12:25Speaker 7: know sometimes i'm a graph designer by trade and when
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: when i you know i can't listen to music all
- 1:12:30Speaker 7: the time but when i can when i'm doing something
- 1:12:32Speaker 7: i can listen to music that's a really good really
- 1:12:35Speaker 7: good background because it makes me feel like i'm typing
- 1:12:36Speaker 7: with purpose and action.
- 1:12:39Speaker 9: And creating my own world.
- 1:12:43Speaker 7: Take this program i am leader of this world but
- 1:12:47Speaker 7: it's a really solid piece of work and it really
- 1:12:51Speaker 7: helped the movie a lot it really worked well with
- 1:12:53Speaker 7: the visuals in that movie so any in particular song
- 1:12:58Speaker 7: wise there's uh one called the fall and it's about
- 1:13:01Speaker 7: halfway through the movie where the action on the screen
- 1:13:04Speaker 7: is they're plunging in an elevator but But the sound
- 1:13:08Speaker 7: on the soundtrack is it's almost like a wordless scream.
- 1:13:11Speaker 7: I mean, it's just the way it's going down. And
- 1:13:15Speaker 7: it's very evocative.
- 1:13:16Speaker 11: I thought.
- 1:13:32Speaker 22: Bye.
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: End of line.
- 1:14:39Speaker 9: Hi, this is Tom Kane, the voice of Yoda.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: And listening to Movie Meltdown, you are good.
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:14:55Speaker 9: Grand finale.
- 1:14:55Speaker 7: And grand finale. I'm going to go for it. I'm
- 1:14:58Speaker 7: going to grab the third rail. The theme from Star Wars.
- 1:15:02Speaker 7: And I say it because of this. I'm old enough.
- 1:15:04Speaker 7: I'm probably the oldest person at this table, as I
- 1:15:06Speaker 7: usually am these days.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Go to bed, old man.
- 1:15:10Speaker 7: As the older generation dies off, I'm the tip of
- 1:15:12Speaker 7: the spear.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: Last man standing.
- 1:15:18Speaker 7: Last man standing for now. I'm the oldest man in
- 1:15:21Speaker 7: the world for now. There's always somebody behind you.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: All right, explain it. You were old enough to see
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: it in the theater.
- 1:15:28Speaker 7: I saw it in the theater. It was 1977. I
- 1:15:30Speaker 7: was eight years old. Yeah, I was eight years old.
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: And the way that movie comes on, it was... You've
- 1:15:37Speaker 7: got to look at it from the historical perspective and
- 1:15:39Speaker 7: not the 30, 40, 50, 60, 80 times you've seen
- 1:15:42Speaker 7: it since. First time you see it, and keep in
- 1:15:45Speaker 7: mind you hadn't seen anything like this. Screen goes black.
- 1:15:49Speaker 7: Long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Screen
- 1:15:51Speaker 7: goes black again. Boom. You see the title. You hear
- 1:15:55Speaker 7: that big trumpet fanfare. grabs your attention, drags you in.
- 1:15:59Speaker 7: It's kind of the opposite of Superman, where it's like
- 1:16:02Speaker 7: it builds.
- 1:16:02Speaker 24: No.
- 1:16:03Speaker 7: It's all lead. There is no lead in.
- 1:16:06Speaker 6: We are here.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: We don't need no stinking credits. You're not here to
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: see credits.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: You're here to see explosions.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: And they deliver.
- 1:16:14Speaker 7: It's a period of civil war in the galaxy, Pitch.
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: Thank you. Thank you.
- 1:19:49Speaker 11: So so.
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: There are any trade negotiations. There's no tax disputes.
- 1:21:33Speaker 13: Boom.
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: War.
- 1:21:34Speaker 7: Awesome. So, I mean, and that, again, it's been repeated
- 1:21:39Speaker 7: and it's almost hackneyed right now. But if you look
- 1:21:41Speaker 7: at it from the historical perspective of actually seeing it
- 1:21:43Speaker 7: for the first time, it grabs your attention and it
- 1:21:46Speaker 7: doesn't let go.
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: So.
- 1:21:48Speaker 7: Yeah. As far as a piece of functional music, movie music.
- 1:21:52Speaker 9: And again, one that completely, like, shaped the movie.
- 1:21:57Speaker 7: Like, that movie.
- 1:21:58Speaker 8: I don't know what it would have been certainly without
- 1:22:00Speaker 8: the entire score, but maybe even just that main title
- 1:22:03Speaker 8: theme is like so important that, yeah, it may have
- 1:22:07Speaker 8: changed the entire final outcome.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: Was there, was there ever any question that it wouldn't
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: be a orchestrated sound soundtrack? Like, because a lot of
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: sci-fi up until that point was all like the synth
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: kind of keyboard and the theremin, you know, was, was
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: the orchestra something that Lucas wanted or fought for? I
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: don't know.
- 1:22:30Speaker 7: I can't imagine it being any other way.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: Because that movie would have been terrible if it had
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: been there.
- 1:22:35Speaker 7: Again, the music really pulls you into the movie. It
- 1:22:37Speaker 7: tells you there's not going to be any subtlety in
- 1:22:39Speaker 7: this movie. There's not a lot of subtlety in Star Wars.
- 1:22:42Speaker 8: No, and it's funny that he was bringing in a
- 1:22:45Speaker 8: pretty big gun there. He was already pretty well established
- 1:22:49Speaker 8: even by then.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: This was after Jaws.
- 1:22:50Speaker 9: Yeah, after Jaws.
- 1:22:51Speaker 8: So it's like they really didn't have a lot. It's
- 1:22:53Speaker 8: like they had his music, and Obi-Wan. Alec is a
- 1:22:57Speaker 8: really well-established actor. But other than that, it's a bunch
- 1:23:01Speaker 8: of nobodies and some special effects that they're not even
- 1:23:03Speaker 8: sure if.
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: They're going to work on screen. They had to develop
- 1:23:05Speaker 7: on the fly. This will probably work.
- 1:23:08Speaker 8: It feels like that was almost legitimizing them. It was like, hey, look,
- 1:23:12Speaker 8: this guy, he's a big name in movies. And it does,
- 1:23:17Speaker 8: because it's a real orchestra. And it really kind of
- 1:23:20Speaker 8: brings back sort of that old Hollywood feel, I guess. That, like, yeah,
- 1:23:23Speaker 8: this is a new kind of sci-fi idea, but we're
- 1:23:26Speaker 8: going to have a little bit of the old world,
- 1:23:27Speaker 8: you know. We'll have the old Hollywood stuff.
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: Kind of makes you, again, the whole prequel thing, you know.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: It's like you need that real world. You need the feeling.
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: You need the weight. Like the orchestra versus a synth,
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:23:43Speaker 8: Which is why the only good part in the prequels
- 1:23:45Speaker 8: is that one song that has, like, human voices in it.
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: Oh.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: Qui-Gon is dead. Yeah, that one, yeah.
- 1:23:52Speaker 8: No, the big battle scene with Darth Maul, which is, again,
- 1:23:55Speaker 8: the best part of that movie.
- 1:23:57Speaker 7: You've got to set through Edelweiss before you get to
- 1:23:59Speaker 7: that part.
- 1:24:01Speaker 8: You finally get to that part at the end, and
- 1:24:02Speaker 8: it's like, oh, see, once again, Duel of the Fates
- 1:24:05Speaker 8: makes this movie.
- 1:24:06Speaker 9: So, yeah.
- 1:24:07Speaker 7: That's mine. What are yours?
- 1:24:08Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:24:10Speaker 9: I'm not playing this game.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: Oh, hey.
- 1:24:12Speaker 9: I have to bring other people in.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: I know what your favorite song of all time is.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: You take me higher than the sky. From the Star
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: Wars Holiday Special. Starship. Come on.
- 1:24:27Speaker 9: It's a great song, and I love that music video.
- 1:24:37Speaker 7: It deserves me that you've seen the holiday special enough
- 1:24:39Speaker 7: to just pull that out of nowhere.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: And yet, I can't do the Diane Carroll song.
- 1:24:45Speaker 9: He watches it on a little box at home.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: I still maintain that the only reason they got that
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: job is because their name was Starship. Because they were
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: trying to do space-themed things. And the guys from Emerson, Lake,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: and Palm were like, Oh, we could have the Star Wars... Job,
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: if only we had named ourselves Galactic Nebula or something.
- 1:25:08Speaker 7: Galactic Emerson Lichen Palmer.
- 1:25:09Speaker 9: In the most popular holiday special ever. Oh, no, wait,
- 1:25:14Speaker 9: never mind then.
- 1:25:15Speaker 15: Scratch that.
- 1:25:15Speaker 9: This is going to make somebody's career. Scratch that.
- 1:25:18Speaker 7: Sorry, Starship.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: What's this yellow crap? We could have been in.
- 1:25:21Speaker 16: The Star Wars.
- 1:25:22Speaker 8: And like Jefferson Starship was so embarrassed, they were like, look,
- 1:25:25Speaker 8: we need to change our name again. Let's drop this
- 1:25:27Speaker 8: Jefferson thing and see if we can skate by on just.
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: Yeah, actually, it was Jefferson who got us the deal
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: to be in the Star Wars.
- 1:25:35Speaker 9: It was all Jefferson's idea, man.
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: So we, like, fired him, and then we had to
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: be Starship because he technically owned the copyright to.
- 1:25:41Speaker 7: Our new band's name is John Smith.
- 1:25:44Speaker 9: We don't like Jefferson. That's our new band.
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: Good stuff.
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: You have failed me for the last time.
- 1:25:53Speaker 8: All right, so no, I am not going to play
- 1:25:55Speaker 8: Jefferson Starship at this point.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: You're welcome.
- 1:25:58Speaker 8: But I am going to play one more to round
- 1:26:01Speaker 8: things out and to fix that problem from earlier. Now,
- 1:26:04Speaker 8: Ben chose a song that wasn't from the Cowboy Bebop
- 1:26:06Speaker 8: movie soundtrack. So now I will play one from that
- 1:26:10Speaker 8: very soundtrack to fix the issue. And thus, all is
- 1:26:13Speaker 8: once again right with the world. So he wanted to
- 1:26:15Speaker 8: play the opening of the show. So now I'll trade
- 1:26:18Speaker 8: up for the opening song of the movie, which is
- 1:26:20Speaker 8: performed by the Seatbelts. Well, something like that. The Seatbelts,
- 1:26:25Speaker 8: it seems, is a whole lot of different people. They've
- 1:26:27Speaker 8: been many members over the years, different variations, depending on
- 1:26:31Speaker 8: what era. I mean, they did the music for the
- 1:26:33Speaker 8: TV series, and then they've done the soundtrack for the
- 1:26:36Speaker 8: video game, and then at least some of them came
- 1:26:38Speaker 8: back to do the soundtrack for the movie. So it's
- 1:26:41Speaker 8: many different people over the years.
- 1:26:42Speaker 9: But to simplify, I'm just going to call them the Seatbelts.
- 1:26:45Speaker 8: So this is The Seatbelts with Ask DNA. So thank
- 1:26:48Speaker 8: you for joining us on this musical journey through cinema.
- 1:26:51Speaker 8: We had a lot of fun assembling it for you,
