- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Norwegian with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. It is good to be here again. Lucas: Today we are going to review some words from last week. Luna: Yes. The words for light and dark. Lucas: Exactly. In Norway, the light changes a lot. Luna: It does. Sometimes it is bright all day. Lucas: And sometimes it is very dark early. Luna: Right. So let us start with the first phrase. Lucas: Okay. The first phrase is "det er lyst ute". Luna: "Det er lyst ute". Lucas: Good. This means "it is bright outside". Luna: Or "it is light outside". Lucas: Yes. When you look out the window and see sun. Luna: So if I open my curtains and it is sunny. Lucas: You say "det er lyst ute". Luna: "Det er lyst ute". Lucas: Very good. Now let us try the opposite. Luna: The opposite? That would be dark. Lucas: Yes. The phrase is "det er mørkt ute". Luna: "Det er mørkt ute". Lucas: Perfect. This means "it is dark outside". Luna: When the sun has gone down. Lucas: Yes. You look out and you cannot see much. Luna: So in winter, I can say "det er mørkt ute" early. Lucas: Exactly. At four o'clock, it might be dark. Luna: "Det er mørkt ute" at four. Lucas: Right. These two phrases are very common. Luna: I use them every morning when I wake up. Lucas: Me too. But there are other ways to use these words. Luna: Oh? Like how? Lucas: Well, "lyst" can mean happy or cheerful too. Luna: Like a bright mood? Lucas: Yes. We often say "lyst og godt". Luna: "Lyst og godt". Lucas: This means "nice and pleasant" or "cheerful and good". Luna: It sounds like a cozy feeling. Lucas: It is. When the weather is nice and people are happy. Luna: We can say "det er lyst og godt" today. Lucas: Yes. If the sun is shining and everyone is smiling. Luna: "Det er lyst og godt". Lucas: Now for the dark side. "Mørkt" can be serious. Luna: Serious? Or sad? Lucas: Sometimes. We say "mørkt og stille". Luna: "Mørkt og stille". Lucas: This means "dark and quiet". Luna: Like a library at night? Lucas: Or a forest in winter. Very peaceful but dark. Luna: I like that. "Mørkt og stille" is calm. Lucas: Yes. It can be comforting. Luna: But it can also be scary? Lucas: Maybe. But usually it just means quiet. Luna: Okay. So "lyst" is bright and happy. Lucas: And "mørkt" is dark and quiet. Luna: Got it. What about inside a room? Lucas: Good question. We can talk about light in a room. Luna: Yes. Like having a lamp on. Lucas: We say "lys i rommet". Luna: "Lys i rommet". Lucas: This means "light in the room". Luna: So if I turn on the ceiling light. Lucas: There is now "lys i rommet". Luna: I need "lys i rommet" to read. Lucas: Yes. Without light, you cannot see your book. Luna: "Lys i rommet" please. Lucas: Perfect. Now the last one is poetic. Luna: Poetic? I like those. Lucas: It is "mørke i hjertet". Luna: "Mørke i hjertet". Lucas: This means "darkness in the heart". Luna: That sounds sad. Lucas: It can be. It means feeling down or gloomy. Luna: On rainy days, maybe? Lucas: Yes. When you feel a bit low inside. Luna: I hope I never have "mørke i hjertet". Lucas: Hopefully not. But it is good to know the word. Luna: Yes. Just in case. Lucas: Let us review the main phrases one more time. Luna: Okay. First: "det er lyst ute". Lucas: It is bright outside. Luna: Second: "det er mørkt ute". Lucas: It is dark outside. Luna: Third: "lyst og godt". Lucas: Nice and pleasant. Luna: Fourth: "mørkt og stille". Lucas: Dark and quiet. Luna: Fifth: "lys i rommet". Lucas: Light in the room. Luna: And sixth: "mørke i hjertet". Lucas: Darkness in the heart. Luna: Those were six phrases. Lucas: Six useful phrases for any time of year. Luna: I will practice them today. Lucas: Good idea. Look out the window and say them. Luna: If it is sunny, I will say "det er lyst ute". Lucas: And if it is cloudy, you can still use them. Luna: Even if it is gray? Lucas: Yes. The words work for any light level. Luna: That is helpful. Lucas: Before we go, I want to say something. Luna: What is it? Luna: Perfect. "Lys i rommet". Lucas: Yes. And "mørke i hjertet". Luna: Understood. I feel ready to describe the weather. Lucas: You do. And the mood inside too.
