- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcast on the Brink. Friday,
- 0:22Speaker 1: October tenth. The big weekend for Indiana football coming up.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Hoosiers going to take on number three Oregon out in
- 0:32Speaker 1: Eugene in a matchup that will be televised by CBS
- 0:35Speaker 1: three point thirty Saturday afternoon. All eyes not just in
- 0:39Speaker 1: Bloomington and Eugene, allies nationally and college football and that
- 0:42Speaker 1: matchup College Game Day. We'll be there for that matchup.
- 0:48Speaker 1: We're going to talk about that game later in today's episode.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We're also going to talk about Big Ten Media Day,
- 0:53Speaker 1: which took place in Rosemont, Illinois yesterday with Josh Posea
- 0:58Speaker 1: inside the hall. Who was there before we get to Josh.

- 1:24Speaker 1: for following us. There, and thanks in general just for
- 1:27Speaker 1: following the show listening every week. We really appreciate the support.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Josh joining us from the suburbs of Chicago for the
- 1:34Speaker 1: first time, I think from the Continental fifty. Your other
- 1:38Speaker 1: two appearances on podcasts on the Brink where from San Juan,
- 1:41Speaker 1: Puerto Rico. How's it being back in Chicago? And I
- 1:45Speaker 1: was big to media Day yesterday?
- 1:47Speaker 2: Well, first of all, thanks for having me today.
- 1:49Speaker 3: It's much colder here in Chicago than it was in
- 1:51Speaker 3: San Juan, no palm trees in sight, just leaves changing
- 1:56Speaker 3: and rainy weather in the forecast. But you can't come
- 2:00Speaker 3: playing Big ten Media Day not Chicago. It was in Rosemont.
- 2:03Speaker 3: I like to point that out towards the airport. But
- 2:08Speaker 3: it was a underwhelming time had by all compared to
- 2:12Speaker 3: Football Media Day. I wasn't there, but I've heard so
- 2:14Speaker 3: much about it. It was in First of all, it
- 2:16Speaker 3: was in Vegas, not in a convention center in the
- 2:19Speaker 3: Chicago suburbs. But not a lot going on with Indiana specifically.
- 2:24Speaker 3: We've gotten to see the team twice in practice. We
- 2:26Speaker 3: haven't seen an exhibition game yet. Actually we have, we
- 2:29Speaker 3: saw Puerto Rico, so we know a lot more about
- 2:31Speaker 3: the team than we did when I went last year,
- 2:33Speaker 3: so it was a lot more questions being asked. I
- 2:36Speaker 3: think Devrees went about twenty twenty five minutes. Players about
- 2:39Speaker 3: the same, so we didn't even get the full time.
- 2:41Speaker 3: People were really struggling to just get questions out because
- 2:45Speaker 3: it became the same old thing. We didn't really hear
- 2:48Speaker 3: much new from Darren DeVries. Tucker to Vrees, and Lamar
- 2:52Speaker 3: Wilkerson provided some a little bit deeper thoughts into what
- 2:56Speaker 3: they see out of certain guys, but all in all,
- 3:00Speaker 3: it was a decent time.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it seems like Big ten Media Day has changed
- 3:06Speaker 1: quite a bit over the years. You know, I went
- 3:07Speaker 1: to several media days. I even went to when they
- 3:10Speaker 1: had it in DC one year. That's kind of how
- 3:14Speaker 1: it used to be, like a mandatory thing to attend.
- 3:16Speaker 1: But FYE basketball, they've had the institutional media Day now
- 3:19Speaker 1: several years, and we had an opportunity last week last
- 3:24Speaker 1: Tuesday to talk to pretty much every healthy available player.
- 3:28Speaker 1: We act ualanced to talk to Darren Debrees, so makes
- 3:31Speaker 1: it a little bit less necessary to make the trip. Obviously,
- 3:35Speaker 1: y're from Chicago, it made sense for you just to
- 3:37Speaker 1: head over there. And attend for the day and ask
- 3:42Speaker 1: some questions and get some video and write some stories
- 3:44Speaker 1: for us. But I'm curious some of these West Coast
- 3:47Speaker 1: schools that are now part of the Big ten year
- 3:50Speaker 1: two for them Washington, Oregon, USC, UCLA. I can't imagine
- 3:55Speaker 1: that many websites or newspapers are spending the money to
- 4:00Speaker 1: send their reporters to get forty five minutes of time
- 4:04Speaker 1: in front of these coaches and players in Chicago. I'm
- 4:06Speaker 1: not right about that assumption. Was it pretty lightly attended
- 4:08Speaker 1: from the West Coast media contingent?
- 4:11Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
- 4:13Speaker 3: There was times where I think I looked over and
- 4:16Speaker 3: Eric Musselman was just sitting on his phone for about
- 4:18Speaker 3: ten minutes he was sitting at the podium. People would
- 4:21Speaker 3: come up to him sporadically. At one point I look
- 4:24Speaker 3: over at Dana Altman and there's four EYEU media members
- 4:27Speaker 3: talking to him for about ten minutes about Darren de
- 4:29Speaker 3: Brees and their relationship from Creighton. So it's really funny
- 4:33Speaker 3: how he spent probably half of his time at the
- 4:35Speaker 3: podium talking about Indiana and Darren Fries instead of his team.
- 4:39Speaker 3: And I'm assuming that Danny Sprinkle, Mick cron and Eric
- 4:43Speaker 3: Musselman did the same thing. They didn't really have guys
- 4:47Speaker 3: to talk about it with. They didn't have to talk
- 4:50Speaker 3: about their guys because quite frankly, no Indiana reporters going
- 4:54Speaker 3: to ask about the UCLA Brewins starting five this year
- 4:59Speaker 3: as they enter exit play. So it was kind of
- 5:01Speaker 3: sad to see those coaches and players. The players also
- 5:05Speaker 3: had to leave town, and they did get to have
- 5:09Speaker 3: some fun things they The Big Ten does a good
- 5:12Speaker 3: job with players, giving them the room to hang out
- 5:15Speaker 3: with one another and all those activities that they have
- 5:18Speaker 3: to do. But they also spent thirty minutes sitting on
- 5:21Speaker 3: their phones waiting for people to ask questions. So it
- 5:23Speaker 3: was a weird, weird situation in a just a oversized
- 5:27Speaker 3: room for a small event.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So I'm curious just from the standpoint of what you
- 5:32Speaker 1: learned from an IEU perspective, you know, given the context
- 5:36Speaker 1: that we've had a couple open practices, you've been to
- 5:39Speaker 1: Puerto Rico to watch the three exhibition games, we've had
- 5:42Speaker 1: media Day, we had a scrimmage in Assembly Hall a
- 5:45Speaker 1: week ago today. Was there anything you learned, knew or
- 5:49Speaker 1: took away from what Darren debrees or Lamar Wilkerson or
- 5:52Speaker 1: Tucker Debris said on Thursday.
- 5:55Speaker 3: I think there's a couple things that I wrote about
- 5:58Speaker 3: it yesterday, but I think what I mainly took away
- 6:01Speaker 3: is that Indiana is going to play two bigs with
- 6:06Speaker 3: Red Bailey and Sam Alexis. That was actually a lot
- 6:09Speaker 3: of talk about the two of them and how they
- 6:11Speaker 3: can compliment one another. We saw in Puerto Rico they
- 6:15Speaker 3: had to because of so much foul trouble. Don't get
- 6:18Speaker 3: me started about the officiating in Puerto Rico. They had
- 6:22Speaker 3: to go to that too big lineup and it worked,
- 6:24Speaker 3: not only because they're athletic guys, but they're two different
- 6:29Speaker 3: guys that can compliment Reed Bailey, he's someone that can
- 6:32Speaker 3: be a stretch five and forces force defenses to play
- 6:36Speaker 3: him out on the perimeter. And Sam Alexis, like Darren
- 6:39Speaker 3: Ries said yesterday, he said, he's a back to the
- 6:40Speaker 3: basket type of guy. He's not going to stretch it
- 6:43Speaker 3: out all that often. But they're going to play too big.
- 6:47Speaker 3: But it's different than last year because these are two
- 6:50Speaker 3: athletic bigs. His six eight and six' ten both can
- 6:53Speaker 3: move fairly. Well bailey more Than alexis given his ability
- 6:58Speaker 3: to shoot the. Ball but that's WHAT i took away
- 7:01Speaker 3: AND i really. Enjoyed another thing Is Tucker devrees is.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Healthy he's been cleared all throughout the, summer but this
- 7:08Speaker 3: is his first summer since twenty twenty two that he's
- 7:11Speaker 3: actually been able to participate in the, lifts the, workouts
- 7:15Speaker 3: and he said he's as good as you can be
- 7:18Speaker 3: through six weeks of preseason. Training but it's good to
- 7:23Speaker 3: see that he's healthy off of a pair of shoulder,
- 7:25Speaker 3: surgeries a bunch of things he's dinged. Up Lamar wilkerson
- 7:29Speaker 3: called them, old but it's really good to see That
- 7:34Speaker 3: indiana's best shooter most likely this, year outside Of Lamar,
- 7:38Speaker 3: wilkerson is healthy come exhibition.
- 7:41Speaker 1: PLAY i think one of the biggest question MARKS i
- 7:45Speaker 1: have right now With indiana is just from a health,
- 7:47Speaker 1: perspective given what we witnessed last week at The cream
- 7:51Speaker 1: And crimson scrimmage that had to be cut short After
- 7:54Speaker 1: Josiah miles had a cramp and they basically ran out of.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Players obviously they could have thrown in some Walk ons
- 8:00Speaker 1: or other, guys but you get to a point in
- 8:04Speaker 1: a scrimmage where it's all, right you're in the fourth.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Quarter it was already shortened a little bit based on
- 8:09Speaker 1: just a number of players. Available when you see somebody
- 8:12Speaker 1: go down AND i, think out of abundance of, caution
- 8:14Speaker 1: you just end. It but details have been pretty scarce
- 8:17Speaker 1: in terms of who's actually like what the injuries are
- 8:20Speaker 1: for each, guy WHICH i. UNDERSTAND i, mean there's no
- 8:22Speaker 1: obligation FOR iu to tell us specific on, media but all,
- 8:25Speaker 1: right the media on. Injuries BUT i Know Jason drake
- 8:29Speaker 1: was dealing with the tow injury over the summer forced
- 8:31Speaker 1: him not to go To Puerto. Rico WHEN i saw
- 8:34Speaker 1: him at the scrimmage and the open, practice he was
- 8:38Speaker 1: actually doing a lot of the stretching and things in
- 8:40Speaker 1: the open practice and walking around pretty. Normally he seemed
- 8:45Speaker 1: like he's a little bit further along and coming. Back
- 8:47Speaker 1: Nick dorn sounds like his return to the to full
- 8:49Speaker 1: go is pretty. Eminent the two that the details seem
- 8:53Speaker 1: a little bit scarce on Our Alexa restitch And Josh.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Harris both of those guys were wearing boots last week In,
- 9:02Speaker 1: Bloomington So i'm curious When darren De reese was asked
- 9:04Speaker 1: about this yesterday was It did he offer anything in
- 9:07Speaker 1: addition to what we've what we've heard, previously or was
- 9:10Speaker 1: it kind of just we'll wait and. See it sounded
- 9:13Speaker 1: to me like from reading a little bit of the
- 9:14Speaker 1: comments that it could be a situation Where indiana is
- 9:17Speaker 1: maybe going to start the season with a couple of
- 9:19Speaker 1: these guys.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Sideline, yeah not only are they going to start the,
- 9:21Speaker 3: season but he also said that some of these guys
- 9:24Speaker 3: will be closer To december than the start of the,
- 9:27Speaker 3: season So indiana could be without and he said two
- 9:30Speaker 3: or three that was that was the quote that he
- 9:33Speaker 3: said probably won't be available right at the beginning of the.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Season which does he consider the beginning of the season
- 9:39Speaker 3: next week or does he consider the beginning of the season.
- 9:43Speaker 2: The, yeah so that was.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Unclear But Nick, dorn like you, said he's very, close
- 9:53Speaker 3: but it's one of those things where he can't just
- 9:55Speaker 3: rush into gameplay right. Away his body will not take
- 10:00Speaker 3: kindly to. That so they are going to slowly but
- 10:03Speaker 3: surely bring them back in and get them physically ready for.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Basketball so it's.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Unclear if he will be ready to go for the
- 10:13Speaker 3: opener in a few. Weeks BUT i think that it
- 10:17Speaker 3: is a cause for, concern right now that two or
- 10:19Speaker 3: three guys might not come back Till.
- 10:21Speaker 1: December, yeah especially with just a couple of key. Positions
- 10:25Speaker 1: obviously you talked About bailey And alexis playing. TOGETHER i
- 10:28Speaker 1: think that's probably a little more unlikely If Josh harris
- 10:33Speaker 1: is out and the, FRESHMAN i don't want to butcher his,
- 10:39Speaker 1: name but the young Freshman andre From. Bosnia he was a.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Player you know that we watched play a little bit
- 10:48Speaker 1: in the open, practice in the, scrimmage and you, KNOW
- 10:51Speaker 1: i wrote that he's a probably a year away from
- 10:55Speaker 1: making meaningful contribution on the. Court so you look at
- 10:58Speaker 1: a front court with With bailey And, alexis those are
- 11:02Speaker 1: really your two guys that Can alexis really is the
- 11:05Speaker 1: only rim. Protection but If Josh harris is, out he
- 11:08Speaker 1: was kind of looked at as being a guy that
- 11:09Speaker 1: could maybe give you some spot minutes at the four
- 11:12Speaker 1: of the. Five although he's a little bit. Undersized his
- 11:15Speaker 1: game is more built toward the interior and then the guard. Situation,
- 11:20Speaker 1: obviously they've got a little bit more depth there With
- 11:22Speaker 1: Connor enright Tating, Connorway Lamar, Wilkerson BUT i think they
- 11:26Speaker 1: need Either restitch Or Jason drake to be, available just
- 11:29Speaker 1: to give them a little bit more guard depth on this.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Roster, yeah guard depth seems to be thin right, now
- 11:36Speaker 3: like you, said BUT i think what they want to
- 11:40Speaker 3: see is having that depth so they can play a
- 11:44Speaker 3: tougher brand of. Defense we kind of touched on defense
- 11:47Speaker 3: yesterday With Darren devrees and he said he doesn't want
- 11:52Speaker 3: to pull back guys and he wants to have. Depth
- 11:55Speaker 3: he said That Connor nray is a guy that he
- 11:58Speaker 3: probably has to pull back from having seven foot, files
- 12:00Speaker 3: but that's what makes him.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Great but keeping his.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Guys on the floor and having the depth so they
- 12:07Speaker 3: don't get in that foul trouble like we saw in
- 12:09Speaker 3: those three games In Puerto rico or the two. Games
- 12:12Speaker 3: Really i'll take away that first. Game you gotta have
- 12:18Speaker 3: guard depth because that's what Won indiana those games And
- 12:22Speaker 3: i'm assuming will win them games later on the.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Season how concerning do you think is the lack of depth?
- 12:29Speaker 1: Though as you enter That marquette game that means something
- 12:32Speaker 1: obviously On november, ninth and then looking ahead to The
- 12:35Speaker 1: Big ten schedule starting in Early, december and then you've
- 12:38Speaker 1: got The Kansas state game obviously to close Out november
- 12:42Speaker 1: and you've got The louisland And kentucky. Games do you
- 12:46Speaker 1: think it's maybe a little bit overblown the lack of
- 12:49Speaker 1: depth because it's guys that are MAYBE i don't want
- 12:51Speaker 1: to say friend, rotation but a little lower in the depth,
- 12:53Speaker 1: chart or do you think it's something that could be
- 12:57Speaker 1: a factor when you get into some of these bigger,
- 12:59Speaker 1: games you have less bodies to go. AROUND i think
- 13:03Speaker 1: based on the way you talk about them wanting to,
- 13:05Speaker 1: play it seems like a little bit less depths could
- 13:09Speaker 1: be an issue as the games in the competition stiffen
- 13:14Speaker 1: up later in the month Of november and Into.
- 13:16Speaker 3: December, yeah they want to play a fast brand of,
- 13:19Speaker 3: basketball and if you can't handle that fast, transition always
- 13:25Speaker 3: run shoot early in the shot. Clock like, physically you're
- 13:28Speaker 3: going to have to be deep in, roster AND i
- 13:33Speaker 3: don't think it's as big of an. Issue the only
- 13:35Speaker 3: ISSUE i see is that the starting five isn't a
- 13:41Speaker 3: national championship right, now a national championship starting, five and
- 13:46Speaker 3: so there's more parody on the roster so that it's
- 13:48Speaker 3: not much of a drop. Off so you need to
- 13:50Speaker 3: have guys off the bench who are going to keep
- 13:53Speaker 3: the same, intensity keep the same level of, play and
- 13:56Speaker 3: some of the guys are fringe that we talked, about
- 13:59Speaker 3: but bringing in that six seventh eighth. Man you don't
- 14:02Speaker 3: need to go, ten, eleven twelve deep that early in
- 14:06Speaker 3: the season those big, games but you got to have
- 14:08Speaker 3: some depth if you're going to want to play a
- 14:10Speaker 3: fast style basketball and beat a team Like, Marquette, Kentucky
- 14:13Speaker 3: louisville and so.
- 14:14Speaker 1: On, YEAH i think it's very important That dorn And
- 14:17Speaker 1: miles are available to play BECAUSE i see them as
- 14:19Speaker 1: key contributors off the. Bench Trent, SISLELY i, think is
- 14:22Speaker 1: the guy that's going to get more minutes than maybe
- 14:25Speaker 1: we expected back in the, spring just based on what
- 14:28Speaker 1: we've seen out of him In Puerto rico and just
- 14:30Speaker 1: play this, spring and then obviously trying to think who
- 14:35Speaker 1: the other one. Is it'll be Likely Sam alexis coming
- 14:38Speaker 1: off the bench With Red bailey starting out to. Five
- 14:40Speaker 1: as you, said we could see them at times playing.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Together but ALSO i think just from a depth, perspective
- 14:46Speaker 1: it would make more sense to start one and then
- 14:49Speaker 1: kind of rotate minutes with those. Guys want to shift
- 14:51Speaker 1: gears obviously to football because there's a huge game On
- 14:55Speaker 1: saturday out In. Eugene is this you, know there were
- 15:00Speaker 1: some big games last year and you covered the football
- 15:03Speaker 1: program last. Year there was obviously The Ohio state. Game
- 15:07Speaker 1: there was the college football playoff game Against Notre. Dame
- 15:10Speaker 1: is this as big of a Game friday football that
- 15:15Speaker 1: you've seen in terms of regular season since you've been
- 15:18Speaker 1: covering the, Team and does it maybe exceed what the
- 15:22Speaker 1: what the hype was and what the kind of the
- 15:26Speaker 1: just the whole moment of The Ohio state game last.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Year.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Yeah last, year The Ohio state, game it was still Little.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Indiana it kind of felt like twenty twenty Where indiana
- 15:36Speaker 3: came in as like the fifth ranked team in the
- 15:38Speaker 3: country at the time or whatever they, were and they
- 15:41Speaker 3: didn't seem like a true. Contender indiana was more of
- 15:44Speaker 3: a contender last year than that twenty twenty, season but
- 15:47Speaker 3: it still felt, like all, right indian is probably not
- 15:51Speaker 3: going to get over this. Hurdle it's can they keep
- 15:53Speaker 3: it close in this game Against Ohio. State this, year
- 15:57Speaker 3: after the schilaking Of, ILLINOIS i think The illinois game
- 16:00Speaker 3: was more anticipated than this, one just because it was a.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Home game In.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Indiana, illinois although some say not a rivalry might be a.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Rivalry there's some. Animosity i'll talk all.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Week indiana does what they, do but this week has
- 16:16Speaker 3: been scheduled or circled On Mikyle kamara's just on the.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Schedule he circled it immediately said this is our opportunity to,
- 16:26Speaker 3: win and he's excited about this. Opportunity indiana forty six
- 16:31Speaker 3: tries against the top five opponent on the, road which
- 16:33Speaker 3: is incredible to.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Me no.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Wins this is the, opportunity And oregon is a really
- 16:40Speaker 3: good football, team but this is the opportunity For indiana
- 16:43Speaker 3: to finally get OVER i don't want to say the.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Humph you can say the, hump the.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Hump i'll say the hump because they've gotten over that proverbial.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Pump multi.
- 16:55Speaker 1: YEAH i was listening To tucker To Breeze's big btn
- 16:58Speaker 1: set yesterday With Rafael davis And Andy, katz and he
- 17:02Speaker 1: dropped over the. Hump So i'm sure he doesn't know
- 17:04Speaker 1: the backstory of, that but it's gonna BE i think
- 17:08Speaker 1: it's going to be a running joke for all of
- 17:10Speaker 1: us when we hear an over the. Humph from now
- 17:14Speaker 1: back to, football, though how how good Is oregon because
- 17:18Speaker 1: they went on the road and obviously Played Penn. State
- 17:22Speaker 1: they controlled that game for most of. It obviously it
- 17:24Speaker 1: was closer towards the. END i believe it went to.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Overtime but then we See Penn state go TO ucla and,
- 17:31Speaker 1: Lose so then everyone's wondering how Good Penn state is. Actually,
- 17:35Speaker 1: oregon we know they were in the playoff last. Year
- 17:37Speaker 1: we know they have a ton of, talent we know
- 17:39Speaker 1: they're well. Coached Dan lanning one of the, Best Kurt
- 17:41Speaker 1: signetti said, it one of the best young, coaches rising
- 17:44Speaker 1: stars in college. Football expected to be a playoff team
- 17:48Speaker 1: again this. Year but how good Is oregon and how
- 17:52Speaker 1: big of a challenge is this going to be For
- 17:54Speaker 1: indiana There from based on what you wrote this morning
- 17:57Speaker 1: in your, preview it sounds like you believe that they're
- 17:59Speaker 1: going to have to play their absolute best to go
- 18:02Speaker 1: in and win this.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Game they might have to play better than.
- 18:05Speaker 3: BEST i Think oregon is a really good football. Team
- 18:09Speaker 3: they that win At Penn. State ignore THAT ucla, game
- 18:15Speaker 3: because winning on the road during a white, out going
- 18:19Speaker 3: across the country Against Penn, state who was at the
- 18:22Speaker 3: time a top five, team that is no doubt a fantastic,
- 18:27Speaker 3: win AND i don't care what anybody. SAYS i know
- 18:30Speaker 3: the line moved from for this week's game from like
- 18:32Speaker 3: twelve and a half TO i think it's down to
- 18:34Speaker 3: seven now because Of Penn state's. Loss they Minimize oregon's
- 18:41Speaker 3: victory over. Them But Dan lanning has built something special
- 18:45Speaker 3: there In, eugene And indiana is going to have to
- 18:48Speaker 3: play perfect Because dante more is arguably better Than Fernando
- 18:54Speaker 3: mendoza and it's his first year starting At. Oregon he
- 18:57Speaker 3: was AT, ucla didn't play much last, year but they're
- 19:00Speaker 3: one hundred percent in the red zone this.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Year that's gonna be hard to.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Beat and they're a, tough physical, team and tough is
- 19:08Speaker 3: an understatement About Austin. Stadium twenty two to one Is
- 19:11Speaker 3: dan landing, there AND i think back to back undefeated.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Seasons So indiana is going to have to play perfect Against.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Oregon you wrote earlier in the week something about just
- 19:24Speaker 3: the big moments That indiana kind of experienced last year
- 19:29Speaker 3: and maybe how that can translate to better different outcomes this.
- 19:33Speaker 1: YEAR i don't know what they were going to say
- 19:37Speaker 1: differently about that in terms, of you, know obviously they
- 19:40Speaker 1: want to learn from those moments and they believe that
- 19:42Speaker 1: they can go in this game and. Win but is
- 19:44Speaker 1: there any way that you can see That indiana's better
- 19:47Speaker 1: equipped to go into a situation like this and they
- 19:49Speaker 1: were last year Against Ohio state and There dame because
- 19:53Speaker 1: watching those, games Obviously i'm not covering the team on
- 19:55Speaker 1: a day to day. Basis last, SEASON i was even
- 19:57Speaker 1: less involved BECAUSE i was just watching from home and
- 20:02Speaker 1: had nobody covering the. Team but they really looked overwhelmed
- 20:06Speaker 1: in those moments last, year and they LOOKED i don't
- 20:09Speaker 1: want to say, unprepared because those are really good football.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Teams they played for the national, championship SO i think
- 20:13Speaker 1: that's kind of maybe an unfair way to characterize, it
- 20:18Speaker 1: but they didn't look ready for the. MOMENT i think
- 20:19Speaker 1: it is the best way to. Say is there anything
- 20:21Speaker 1: you can point to with this year's team to make
- 20:24Speaker 1: you think going in that they're going to be better
- 20:27Speaker 1: prepared for what's? Ahead because obviously they played really well Against.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Illinois they survived Against, iowa and don't get me, wrong
- 20:35Speaker 1: a very tough place to. Play a lot of ranked
- 20:38Speaker 1: teams go there and. Lose that was an impressive, win
- 20:40Speaker 1: but it wasn't a dominant, win AND i think they're
- 20:43Speaker 1: going to have to take the level play up a
- 20:44Speaker 1: significant notch from what they played At iowa to win An.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Oregon But i'm just curious if you can point to
- 20:50Speaker 1: anything or think of any reason why the outcome may be.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Different and who. Knows they could go there and play
- 20:55Speaker 1: really well and still come up. Short BUT i think
- 20:57Speaker 1: that would mean a lot more than going and losing
- 21:00Speaker 1: by two or three.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Touchdowns, yeah last year they played, scared and even Against,
- 21:06Speaker 3: Iowa Mike, shanahan the offensive, coordinator called plays scared and
- 21:13Speaker 3: we've seen that in all three big environments that he's
- 21:15Speaker 3: played loud.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Crowd but the.
- 21:17Speaker 3: One Thing i'll go back, to And i've been going
- 21:19Speaker 3: back to with other people in the last two, weeks
- 21:22Speaker 3: is they found a way to win At, iowa just
- 21:27Speaker 3: like it In obviously a lot more fans At Penn
- 21:30Speaker 3: state during a white, out but teams go to die
- 21:34Speaker 3: In Kinnick, stadium And indiana found a way they they
- 21:38Speaker 3: made they Played iowa's game and beat. Them they were
- 21:42Speaker 3: subject To Kirk farren's football and a sister that went
- 21:46Speaker 3: To iowa is the worst thing to ever watch in your,
- 21:48Speaker 3: life and it was the worst thing to. Watch But
- 21:51Speaker 3: indiana found a way to. Win teams in the past
- 21:54Speaker 3: don't do. THAT i don't think last year's team does.
- 21:56Speaker 3: That Michigan state on the road last year wasn't much
- 21:59Speaker 3: of a road, game or it wasn't much of a
- 22:01Speaker 3: game Because Michigan state wasn't very.
- 22:03Speaker 2: GOOD ucla obviously was a.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Just a horrible.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Program at that.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Time and THEN i believe the other one Was northwestern
- 22:12Speaker 3: was basically a home game and they didn't even play that.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Well going on the road and having the experience with
- 22:17Speaker 3: this specific team and winning in a tough environment Like
- 22:21Speaker 3: iowa gives me reason That indiana can play. WELL i
- 22:24Speaker 3: don't necessarily say that they win because that they played
- 22:27Speaker 3: good At iowa and they showed me, that BUT i
- 22:30Speaker 3: think they can play much. Better but that, said the
- 22:35Speaker 3: offensive playbook needs to be opened. UP i seriously would
- 22:39Speaker 3: love to see a first play shot play From Fernando,
- 22:42Speaker 3: mendoza whether it be To Elijah surad Or Omar Cooper.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Junior it has to be opened up early and allow
- 22:49Speaker 3: the creativity to flow and Trust Fernando.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Mendoza do you think there's any chance that they've been
- 22:56Speaker 1: holding back at all for a moment like, this or
- 22:58Speaker 1: do you think there was obviously the last two weeks
- 23:01Speaker 1: there's really wasn't last, week but the two games prior
- 23:05Speaker 1: there was really no reason. To i'm just kind of
- 23:08Speaker 1: curious why you think maybe the play calling has BEEN
- 23:11Speaker 1: i don't know enough about, it but you're covering this
- 23:13Speaker 1: more on a day day. Basis do you think there's
- 23:15Speaker 1: any chance that there's gonna be some new wrinkles that
- 23:18Speaker 1: we see On saturday that we haven't seen.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Before, YEAH i think That indiana will be more. Prepared
- 23:23Speaker 3: i've written about it a couple of times. Now the
- 23:26Speaker 3: crowd noise that they practice two and a half hours
- 23:28Speaker 3: with every single day leading up to these. GAMES i
- 23:31Speaker 3: think they've been doing it for the past two. Weeks,
- 23:33Speaker 3: uh just trying to get acclimated with the. NOISE i
- 23:37Speaker 3: think with that play calling is a lot Of indiana.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Stuff the receivers are, options so they have an option
- 23:43Speaker 3: to go on a fly route or they go on
- 23:45Speaker 3: an en, route and they have to make the. Decision
- 23:49Speaker 3: they want to. Simplify that's what they've been. Doing they've
- 23:52Speaker 3: been simplifying their. PLAYBOOK i, Mean iowa stacked nine in the,
- 23:56Speaker 3: box And indiana still ran right into the right into
- 23:59Speaker 3: the teeth of defense on fourth and one multiple times
- 24:02Speaker 3: in that. Game so there's no check audibles With Kurt,
- 24:06Speaker 3: signetti like you said On.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Monday SO.
- 24:11Speaker 3: I think that they might have been holding back punches
- 24:15Speaker 3: and trying to show thing or trying not to show
- 24:18Speaker 3: their hand too. Much but at some point you got
- 24:20Speaker 3: to go to a place Like iowa and beat the
- 24:23Speaker 3: crap out of them just to show your.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Dominance So.
- 24:29Speaker 3: I'd like to believe that they were holding something back
- 24:32Speaker 3: for this.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Game what's the key in terms of winning this, game
- 24:36Speaker 1: in terms of being able to score enough points is
- 24:38Speaker 1: a balanced. OFFENSE i Know oregon's bigger on the lines
- 24:43Speaker 1: than In. Indiana is do you feel like they're gonna
- 24:45Speaker 1: be able to run the ball? Effectively and Is mendoza
- 24:49Speaker 1: going to get the time to be able to pick
- 24:52Speaker 1: the defense apart with the passing, Game so they've got
- 24:54Speaker 1: plenty of. Receivers if the guys can get, open they
- 24:56Speaker 1: can obviously move the, ball but he's got to have
- 24:59Speaker 1: time to be able to make those. THROWS i think
- 25:01Speaker 1: that's ANOTHER i think something that has to be on
- 25:04Speaker 1: the mind Of indiana going into the, game being able
- 25:06Speaker 1: to get protection on him because he's not really taking
- 25:10Speaker 1: a ton of hits this year. EITHER i mean that
- 25:12Speaker 1: that hit THAT i think we took in The iowa
- 25:14Speaker 1: game where he was kind of running towards the sideline
- 25:16Speaker 1: was kind of a scary. Play you don't want your
- 25:17Speaker 1: quarterback in that situation very. Often but with a team Like,
- 25:21Speaker 1: oregon their, physicality the amount of just four and five
- 25:23Speaker 1: star guys that they have on this, roster you worry
- 25:26Speaker 1: about being able to protect the quarterback, enough and you
- 25:28Speaker 1: also worry about being able to run the ball against you,
- 25:32Speaker 1: know you, know a physical defense that it's quite, frankly
- 25:35Speaker 1: just bigger Than indiana and maybe more athletic and.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Stronger, YEAH i think the numbers that came OUT i,
- 25:42Speaker 3: saw like the weight stuff that doesn't matter. REALLY i
- 25:46Speaker 3: Think Pac coogan said it On, tuesday said Low, man
- 25:48Speaker 3: wins have learned that since third, Grade indiana is up
- 25:52Speaker 3: there With oregon in. PHYSICALITY i think people are over
- 25:58Speaker 3: over exaggerating the difference between these two programs right, now
- 26:02Speaker 3: maybe three years ago out of said, yes even two years,
- 26:05Speaker 3: Ago i'd agreed with you and Said oregon's much, Bigger
- 26:08Speaker 3: they're much. BETTER i think That indiana has an opportunity
- 26:12Speaker 3: to Protect Fernando mendoza and then with a running back
- 26:14Speaker 3: Like Roman, hemby he doesn't need much space and when
- 26:18Speaker 3: he gets the yards after contact that he gets will
- 26:21Speaker 3: push the push the pile, forward so they'll set the run.
- 26:25Speaker 3: There but the passing game needs to set up that.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Run they need to Keep oregon. Honest but as for,
- 26:31Speaker 3: Defensively indiana gets D'Angelo pond's back and that is that
- 26:35Speaker 3: is gigantic because in The iowa, game they played a
- 26:38Speaker 3: bunch of soft zone coverage they're trying to uh. GET
- 26:44Speaker 3: i think it Was Rylan gandhy in his position just
- 26:46Speaker 3: more acclimated and didn't want to put him in too
- 26:49Speaker 3: much stress in man. Coverage so you saw a lot
- 26:52Speaker 3: of dinks and doinks And Mark ronowski getting those first
- 26:55Speaker 3: downs on third down from those zone coverages in the
- 26:58Speaker 3: middle of the.
- 26:58Speaker 2: FIELD i.
- 26:59Speaker 3: THINK i Think indiana needs to get pressure On Dante.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Moore he's taken one sack this. YEAR i think that's
- 27:05Speaker 3: the biggest. Thing Not indiana's offensive, line It's indiana's defensive
- 27:08Speaker 3: line number one and havoc. Rate they need to get
- 27:10Speaker 3: To Dante moore because if he has, time he's gonna
- 27:13Speaker 3: find his. Weapons and they are a big play team
- 27:15Speaker 3: In indiana has has given up some big plays this.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Year so if you had to give me one or
- 27:20Speaker 1: two keys to watch when you sit down and watch
- 27:23Speaker 1: the game this, weekend what would they. Be AND i
- 27:26Speaker 1: know you've asked me before if you could put predictions
- 27:30Speaker 1: in your stories On inside The. HALL i told you
- 27:32Speaker 1: that's not sunce that we. Did but this is a
- 27:34Speaker 1: different this is a different. Medium i'm gonna ask you
- 27:37Speaker 1: for your prediction for the game as.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Well, okay two keys.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Won it's a kind of a tired trope In big ten,
- 27:44Speaker 3: football But indiana needs to win the. Trenches they need
- 27:48Speaker 3: to win up. Front they need to even at least
- 27:50Speaker 3: break even in the front to win this, game whether
- 27:53Speaker 3: it be offense or. Defense that's number. One AND i
- 27:56Speaker 3: think the next key to the game is it has
- 27:59Speaker 3: to be the play. Calling you got to open up your.
- 28:01Speaker 3: Playbook you can't be, robotic you can't be. Predictable and
- 28:09Speaker 3: If Mike shanahan can kind of emerge from the shadows
- 28:13Speaker 3: in and finally start calling plays like he does At
- 28:17Speaker 3: Memorial stadium At austin this, weekend then it could be
- 28:20Speaker 3: a better day For. Indiana that, Said I'M i can't
- 28:26Speaker 3: be An indiana homer. Here i'm gonna go Go oregon
- 28:31Speaker 3: thirty One indiana.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Twenty is that?
- 28:36Speaker 1: Enough if, that if it plays out with a score like,
- 28:39Speaker 1: that is that enough to Keep indiana in the top
- 28:42Speaker 1: what ten or eleven twelve nationally and still in obviously firm.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Contention but that that's gonna put a lot of pressure
- 28:50Speaker 1: on a win At Penn state if it comes to.
- 28:52Speaker 3: That, right, YEAH i think that this is the game
- 28:56Speaker 3: that it's gonna be an a eleven point. Game That
- 29:02Speaker 3: oregon gets that late field goal to push it to
- 29:04Speaker 3: a two score, Game it's not going to Be indiana
- 29:07Speaker 3: scores to cut the deficit from nineteen to eleven with
- 29:10Speaker 3: a two point. Conversion If kurtzignetti did that in both
- 29:14Speaker 3: The Notre dame loss and The Ohio state, loss made
- 29:16Speaker 3: it look a little bit better on. Paper But indiana
- 29:19Speaker 3: needs to show the lights are on college Game DAY,
- 29:22Speaker 3: cbs everybody will be Watching indiana and see they're going
- 29:27Speaker 3: to be looking At.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Indiana more than they Are. Oregon they know Who oregon.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Is they should know Who indiana is already after The illinois,
- 29:34Speaker 3: game but they've already Discredited, illinois who has a big
- 29:37Speaker 3: of their own With.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Ohio state this.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Weekend but everybody's going to be looking critically At indiana
- 29:43Speaker 3: and they need to show out and keep IT i
- 29:46Speaker 3: hate to go back to the old tired trope of
- 29:49Speaker 3: keeping it close with a big, team but they do
- 29:51Speaker 3: need to keep it. Close and if they can keep
- 29:53Speaker 3: it close for long, enough you go in and win
- 29:55Speaker 3: the football.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Game let's say they go out there and. Win what
- 29:59Speaker 1: does that do for their ranking and status? Nationally my.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Guess we've talked about the HYPOTHETICALS uh in the past
- 30:08Speaker 3: couple of. Weeks we were like an SEC uh fan
- 30:11Speaker 3: base in my house back In.
- 30:13Speaker 2: BLOOMINGTON.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Uh we think that they'd be two or three in
- 30:18Speaker 3: the country because that is a hard place to win
- 30:22Speaker 3: against a really good football, team and it would prove
- 30:25Speaker 3: That indiana is a legit contender for the national. Championship
- 30:29Speaker 3: people are still doubting that a win would Put indiana
- 30:33Speaker 3: maybe as they as the favorite at that point to
- 30:36Speaker 3: win the national.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Championship one way or, another it's gonna it's gonna turn.
- 30:41Speaker 1: OUT i Think i'm hoping for a competitive. GAME i
- 30:45Speaker 1: just want to watch a good football game On saturday,
- 30:49Speaker 1: afternoon and that's it's always. Been you know that that
- 30:52Speaker 1: three point thirty slot ON cbs for so many years
- 30:55Speaker 1: was THAT Sec marquee. Game nice to have the big
- 30:58Speaker 1: ten in that. Spot Now i'll be able to turn
- 31:01Speaker 1: it on for the national audience and amazing whatever. Happens
- 31:06Speaker 1: amazing That indiana's even in this position based on where
- 31:09Speaker 1: the program was. Historically Kurt, signety the coaching, staff the,
- 31:12Speaker 1: players the, Administration they've done a tremendous job getting the
- 31:16Speaker 1: program to this. Point for every remaining home game sold
- 31:20Speaker 1: Out Memorial, stadium which is another just sign that football
- 31:25Speaker 1: Has we've known since last, season but football has officially
- 31:29Speaker 1: arrived In. Bloomington everyone's excited looking forward to a fun
- 31:34Speaker 1: game On. Saturday, JOSH i know you're not going to
- 31:36Speaker 1: be out, there but you'll be providing coverage over on
- 31:38Speaker 1: On inside The. Hall thanks as always for joining us
- 31:41Speaker 1: on this week's episode Of podcasts on The.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Brink
