- 2:08Welcome, Welcome, and Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. I am so happy
- 2:15to have you here tonight. I am Black Diamond, and this is Basic
- 2:17Black after Dark with the Crew Network. Now, today is not normally my
- 2:23day that I usually have you come, but I wanted to do a bonus
- 2:25show today, not just because it's Valentine's Day, but it's because it's a
- 2:30very special day for me as well. And I know it's going to be
- 2:34a very special day for you as well as soon as I tell you about
- 2:37my special guest that I'm happy tonight. But what I want to do is
- 2:39I want to ask you how many of you remember when you turn ten?
- 2:46You know, when you were double digits, we were all excited to be
- 2:49ten. What about when you became a teenager, you were thirteen. What
- 2:53about eighteen when we all thought we were grown better? Yet twenty one when
- 2:59we knew we can have our first drink and we were legal. Then we
- 3:02turned twenty five. Wow. I don't know what many were thinking in twenty
- 3:08five, but I know what I was thinking in twenty five. But this
- 3:10is not one of no censer places, so I'm gonna leave that one alone.
- 3:15Then people got into their dirty thirties, and by the time they was
- 3:19forty years of age, they figured they've done it all. Fifties, some
- 3:23people called us over the hell sixties. I believe when we're at our best,
- 3:29so everybody's starting to understand how old I am. Yes, I'm amongst
- 3:32those seventies. I guess it's the seventy five when everybody's starting to feel very,
- 3:38very vibrant. And I'm saying that as we go older most people would
- 3:43say when we were younger, but no, I'm saying that as we go
- 3:45older, then we have those I'm gonna skip eighty. Nothing wrong with being
- 3:50eighty, but I'm gonna rush a little bit when some people turn ninety.
- 3:54So many people lived to that age, and so many people are so blessed
- 4:00to reach ninety Well, my guest tonight reached ninety nine today, and I
- 4:06am here to celebrate her. I am here to celebrate her today and forever.
- 4:12And this special guest that I have here is my mother. We call
- 4:15her Mama Forbes. It is her ninety ninth birthday. So we are here
- 4:21to talk to her about being ninety nine years young, where her plans are
- 4:27for the future, because there is still a future, And how does she
- 4:30feel turn in ninety nine? And what can she tell us about life?
- 4:38Some of those questions that some people have, you can call in. She's
- 4:43not shy and she can talk to anybody. Mam. Yes, how do
- 4:47it feel turn in ninety nine? It's wonderful, really feels great to know
- 4:56that I can get around. Let me tell you she does. She gets
- 5:00around better than me some of the time. My mom back at home,
- 5:03was once known as the woman who was setting the window. And she wasn't
- 5:06one of them nosy neighbors that got into everybody's business, but she was one
- 5:11that sat in the window and she watched the neighborhood by watching the children and
- 5:14make sure we got on the bus and everything well, right now, I
- 5:16can tell you my mother can spring to the window and get to the window.
- 5:19I could do, say so and so is going down the block or
- 5:21something that's happened. She can still get up and move a little faster than
- 5:25me. She might give me one of those elbows and move me out of
- 5:28the way and get up. But my mom is a track store. She
- 5:30can take you over. Mind. You've experienced so much in your life.
- 5:34You've watched, and no disrespect, You've watched the differences in telephones. You
- 5:42watch the differences in televisions. When we used to have those antenna's up,
- 5:46I see. I can remember, though so many of you do too.
- 5:48We had those antenna's out. Sometimes we put a loominum fall on it and
- 5:53or banging them. Those big square floor model TVs when we all thought we
- 5:57were rich because we had a floor model TV. Now we're into these big
- 6:00black screen TV. Do you see much of a difference in the way that
- 6:05we use TV now and the way that you use TV when you were growing
- 6:10up. I don't see any difference at all. Nothing about maybe the screening,
- 6:15maybe even the television shows that's coming on. Shows different. Yeah,
- 6:20What were some of the favorite shows that you used to watch. Oh my
- 6:24god, so many of them I used to watch. Can you think of
- 6:30any one particular one that you use that seems to come to learn? No,
- 6:33not in particular. Well, I knew there was one that you and
- 6:36your sisters used to watch, and you used to talk about, Perry Mason.
- 6:41Y'all used to watch that a lot, and I used to watch that.
- 6:44A lot of the game shows that they used to watch, they'll still
- 6:46come on today. Now. The telephones now, believe it or not,
- 6:49my mom has the cell phone. She can rock one of these. Yep,
- 6:54you know how to use them. So that goes to tell you that
- 6:58even though we had those black and white ones where you were just dialing downing
- 7:00down, those are the ones I remember, these are the ones that we're
- 7:04using now. And she knows how to use it. She has one and
- 7:08every day she knows how to plug it in and charge it out. Sometimes
- 7:12she may turn it upside down, but she still know how to use it.
- 7:15What about the clothing now, do you see a lot of what you
- 7:20wore back in your time some of the things that we're still wearing now at
- 7:26all? What did you think about the styles? Do you think that the
- 7:30styles were better than or better now. It was better than now. One
- 7:35thing I'm going to tell you about my mom. She worked in New York
- 7:40City and she worked at a place where was it the nail head? It
- 7:44was a nailhead factory. Senator button, that's what it was. Tell them
- 7:48who you worked alongside, who's sat next to you while you're working, because
- 7:53a lot of people don't believe it. When I said so, I want
- 7:55you to say, last name was Tyson? And what was that like?
- 8:01Was she quiet? She was quiet? Very quiet. I had to bring
- 8:07up I was little because she was too quiet. She just set on the
- 8:11machines and work, wouldn't say anything. I hadn't talked to her to make
- 8:16a talk, right, wow. But she was a very nice person and
- 8:20I think she still is well. She will. She passed. She did.
- 8:26She passed away, guy, she did? Oh my god, Yeah
- 8:28she did. She passed that day. To go to show you I don't
- 8:31keep up with the news. Yeah, she passed away. I think a
- 8:33little bit more than a year ago. But she she wrote a book which
- 8:37I bought and I had downstairs in the cabinet, And yeah, she did,
- 8:43she did pass. But you were originally born in Asbury Park, New
- 8:48Jersey, February fourteenth, nineteen twenty five, and then you moved to New
- 8:56York night and you had your family. You are the mother of eight children,
- 9:05me being one of them, I am the youngest of eight children,
- 9:09and she has I don't even want to begin to count how many grandchildren and
- 9:13great grandchildren as a matter of fact, from my mom, my oldest sister,
- 9:18she has a daughter who has a daughter who has a daughter. So
- 9:24there's six on that line. So the generations to continuing to go back.
- 9:28I think, if I'm not mistaken, your youngest well I don't know.
- 9:33I can't say your youngest great grand because I don't know how old. But
- 9:37you do go back six generations, and that's pretty awesome to have to say
- 9:41that you can go back six generations, and a lot of people don't realize
- 9:46how fortunate that they are to be able to go back that far. Is
- 9:50there something that you're doing to make your life so fulfilled right now? Is
- 9:58there certain things that you're doing, certain things that you're eating. Because some
- 10:01people want to say, how do you do it? How do you do
- 10:05it? Well? I don't drink, I get good exercise and I go
- 10:13to sleep early. My canvoutul to not drinking part exercise And yeah, like
- 10:20I told you earlier, she moved back and forth, and yeah, she
- 10:26does get her rested in one thing I can actually say. And with the
- 10:28grandkids that he in my home, they definitely keep her busy, especially a
- 10:31little one. And I'm not going to say her name too loud because she
- 10:35might wind up coming up here and taking over the show, because that's the
- 10:37type of little kick she is. But what was it like growing up in
- 10:43your family? Because you are one of sixteen children, and she is the
- 10:52last of sixteen children, and I've met most of my aunts and uncles on
- 10:58my mother's side of the family. What was it like growing up with such
- 11:01a large family. I figured I come from a large family because of the
- 11:05siblings I have, But you have you had fifteen other siblings. What was
- 11:09that like growing up with them? It was really nice, very nice.
- 11:15Most of the time. I was boss because they listened to me. I
- 11:22guess they figured I was so quiet, but they didn't know me yet.
- 11:26Well, I've met some of them sisters, and some of them may say
- 11:31something different. I got a few of them that I can call. I'm
- 11:35gonna I'm gonna call out some names, and I want you to tell me.
- 11:41Some of the younger and some are older. We had an aunt named
- 11:43Aunt dot and I think everybody got an aunt Doted. She was the oldest
- 11:48that I can remember, what the oldest, and I believed there was something
- 11:50that came before, but they passed away before I was born. What was
- 11:54she like growing up? She was very nice, nice, quiet, but
- 12:00work keep myself in the family. So you mostly lived in the Brothers.
- 12:07Most of you lived in the Bronx. Why did you transition to Queens?
- 12:13Well, move out of the Browns, move the Queens. Okay, this
- 12:20is somebody that just came on. There's sixteen children. That's a huge family
- 12:24that's coming from Trevida. Yeah, that that is a huge family Travida.
- 12:28You have your grandson. I see this here. Hey hey, happy birthday,
- 12:35Grandma's joy. Yeah. Hi, hey, now how are you doing?
- 12:41Happy night, ninth birthday? Thank you yourself? You want to you
- 12:46want to put take your phone up? I show him, show him,
- 12:54behave with myself Grandma and somebody else. Make me. I don't want you
- 13:01coming out looking for me. I'm coming to look for you some of that
- 13:05that good luck so I can turn ninety nine? You make? Oh wow,
- 13:11you make? What's up? Man? You know that is that's Richie
- 13:15Gray? Right? How you doing this? Fus? Happy birthday? God
- 13:18bless you, thank you and all that stuff. Hey, Richie? Hey,
- 13:26what's up? What's up? Hey? How are you? I'm all
- 13:28right, yeah, just to wish her happy birthday. May God bless her
- 13:35and keep her in good health and then enjoy her evening. All right,
- 13:39that's what you and your grandson right now was there too? All right,
- 13:48take care of yourself. I'll do that, all right, bye bye?
- 13:54Come on, hey, rightdell, can say something to your grandmother? Who
- 14:01is she? That's right downright on the bottom, Hi, right down.
- 14:09You can't hear you your you're mute. There there you go, his phone
- 14:16job. He's traveling right now. He's driving this truck, so he's traveling,
- 14:20so he's probably trying to pop back in. So, yeah, that
- 14:24was Richard that used to live up the street from us when we've been living
- 14:26in New York. And your grandson, well, one of your grandchildren,
- 14:31so we were talking about your transition from there and then also keeping yourself vibrant
- 14:37and healthy and doing the things that you do. What are some of the
- 14:39things that you do on a daily basis? You know, what do you
- 14:45do? And I know you get up in the morning, you get yourself
- 14:46together there in any particular places that you don't No, go to the center,
- 14:50to the senior center, and enjoying myself with the other people of a
- 14:56young ladies. Now I noticed I came in there a couple of times to
- 14:58pick you up some some people and they were playing pool. Do you be
- 15:01playing? Also? No, I don't play pool, but you guys play
- 15:03bingo a lot bengo? And what's your luck? Like my luck is blood?
- 15:09So you've been winning I went on bengo, but you haven't been sharing
- 15:13it. But it's not money. Yeah, I was gonna ask that question
- 15:18when it ain't sharing any money? Not money, little gifts. Oh okay,
- 15:24okay. So I hear that you're gonna be going to the cherry blossom.
- 15:28Oh yeah, next month. Okay, So you're going to the cherry
- 15:31blossom. That's pretty cool. You're on mute right now. They try to
- 15:37pop back up. He's on mute, So I don't think he hurt me.
- 15:43I hope you're not driving while you're talking to us. If you are,
- 15:48would hope that you can pull over safely. You're unmuted. Now,
- 15:56that's right now you under saying how you got He's going back and forth,
- 16:02so he must be driving. So I'm gonna say he said helloon, because
- 16:06that would rather for him not to be driving. He's driving a truck and
- 16:08that's a little dangerous. So unless he pulled over to the side. Yeah,
- 16:14she said that she'll see you when you get here, but just drive
- 16:17safe. Okay, he probably can see you, but I would prefer for
- 16:21him not too that. Well, that was my son, and of course
- 16:22I'm gonna be the mother type and just tell him to pull over, but
- 16:26I don't know. Hope he does. Are you driving a truck too,
- 16:33h oh Man? Yeah, okay, hoping that he wasn't driving and trying
- 16:42to talk at the same time. Be safe out there, Yeah, I'm

- 16:52So getting back to your birthday girl, what's going on? So what

- 27:45of the month. I's not that, you know, most of the month,
- 27:48almost every day. See, I don't look at television. You have
- 27:52to check out your Facebook page. She does have her own Facebook page.
- 27:56Oh yeah, yeah, she's pretty hip to the cell phone and a Facebook
- 28:00page. So she's keeping up with the times. Rather, the times are
- 28:06keeping up with her to a little slow. Times are little slow, she
- 28:15says. That's okay. My note. Growing up, I would have never
- 28:22be honest, I would have never thought that I would have saw this day.
- 28:26You know, growing up, you don't really think about how old you
- 28:30are. I'm not sure who this is. I'm not sure if you were
- 28:45who. I can't see the face of the dropped door. Well again,
- 28:53you don't you don't you know Tuesday. Yeah, he just blopped off.
- 29:00I know that is. That's my brother. Okay, that's you up there.
- 29:07I bring them back up if they come on. Yeah. So yeah,
- 29:14growing up, you don't usually think about how how old your parents are.
- 29:17Everybody think that their parents are old, you know. Yeah, I
- 29:21know Markue's saying that all the time about me being old. Yeah, no,
- 29:25I don't think you know what I'm saying. Growing up, you know,
- 29:27people think that their parent is old. She checked you, check,
- 29:32Patrice says, Happy birthday, Granny, Patrice. She's another one of my
- 29:37sisters. She's here on the podcast. She's another one of my the Crew
