- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. And if you are watching the
- 0:18video version of this podcast, you might go Brian, where in the
- 0:22world are you? I'm actually recording my first
- 0:25episode at home since you might not believe this right now, I'm
- 0:30recording in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:32The last episode that I recorded at home of Tabernacle Talk was
- 0:37back in October of 2024. So I can say it's been quote UN
- 0:43quote, 2 years since I have recorded at home.
- 0:47But I just got back from doing some things with my family for
- 0:52New Year's. And so it was a tremendous time.
- 0:55I, I hope that you have had a good start to 2026 and I hope
- 1:00that you will continue to pursue God through his word in 2026.
- 1:07And I am looking forward to finishing up after this episode.
- 1:12We've got two more episodes in Psalm 119.
- 1:15So today is Psalm 119 versus 153 through 160, and then next
- 1:20episode is 161 through 168. Those are all of the verses in
- 1:25Psalm 119 that start with the Hebrew letter sin or shin,
- 1:30depending on it's like where the dot goes above one of those
- 1:35letters determines what that is. And then our very last episode
- 1:40is verses 169 through 176, and those are all the verses that
- 1:45start with the Hebrew letter TA. And so I am looking forward to
- 1:50today's verses, which one more time is 153 to one, 6153 to 160.
- 1:58Let's read through the passage and see what the Lord has for us
- 2:01today. The psalmist says, consider my
- 2:04affliction and rescue me, for I have not forgotten your
- 2:09instruction. Champion my cause and redeem me.
- 2:13Give me life as you promised. Salvation is far from the wicked
- 2:18because they do not study your statutes.
- 2:22Your compassions are many. Yahweh.
- 2:24Give me life according to your judgments.
- 2:28My persecutors and foes are many.
- 2:30I have not turned from your decrees.
- 2:33I've seen the disloyal and feel disgust because they do not keep
- 2:38Your word. Consider how I love your
- 2:41precepts. Yahweh.
- 2:43Give me life according to your faithful love.
- 2:47The entirety of Your word is truth.
- 2:50Each of your righteous judgments endures forever.
- 2:56Man, I love these verses. One thing that I want to focus
- 2:59on today from this passage is that God is our champion like
- 3:04He's our victor. He is the one that gives us the
- 3:09win. I don't know about you.
- 3:12Over the past couple of days, I played some different card games
- 3:16and board games and things with my family.
- 3:19And I'm not an incredibly competitive person.
- 3:22Like I want to do well. And if I feel like perhaps I
- 3:28didn't do my best or if I have teammates that I'm like, man,
- 3:32we, we should have gotten that. We should have won.
- 3:35You know, I, I might be a little sad about that.
- 3:37I've got some friends that are very competitive.
- 3:40I don't think he listens to this, but one of my best friends
- 3:42in the world, Pastor Micah Bosworth, who pastors Ridge
- 3:46Point Church in Wenatchee, WA. Him and his wife Rebecca are
- 3:52some of the most competitive people that I have ever met.
- 3:56And they want to win every single time.
- 4:00And when you think about it, you know, no one really wants to
- 4:03lose in the game of life. They don't want to lose in their
- 4:08relationships. They don't want to lose in their
- 4:10job. They don't want to lose at
- 4:11church. And I see here that the psalmist
- 4:15anchors any hope of victory or certainty or purpose in God,
- 4:23that God is the one that gives the victory.
- 4:26You could think of some old songs.
- 4:28Victory in Jesus, my Savior forever.
- 4:31He sought me and bought me with his redeeming blood.
- 4:34He loved me ere I knew him, and all my love is due Him.
- 4:38He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing blood.
- 4:42There's a lot of other ones. Faith is the victory we know
- 4:45that overcomes the world they're quoting from.
- 4:48I believe it's first John 5, I think, if I remember correctly,
- 4:55because we went over it together on Tabernacle Talk.
- 4:58So how do we see God's victory? How is it accomplished?
- 5:02How do we tap into the victories that God wins?
- 5:06Because we know God's not, if you will, God's not a loser.
- 5:10He always wins. And so how do we tap into the
- 5:14winds of God? Let's find that out as we look
- 5:17through these verses today. Verse 153 consider my affliction
- 5:22and rescue me, for I have not forgotten your instruction.
- 5:27What I find so interesting here is he doesn't say, God, I
- 5:32remember your instruction and so I can win.
- 5:36I think here what the psalmist notes is something that we
- 5:39always need to take care to remember that our victory does
- 5:43not come from us doing all of the right things.
- 5:47Now we might have a better marital relationship as we
- 5:53follow God's instructions for marriage and how we treat other
- 5:57people. We might have a better time at
- 6:01our workplace as we follow what God tells us to do as those that
- 6:07are employed by others to to work.
- 6:09You can think of Ephesians 6 and Colossians 3 are supposed to
- 6:13work our jobs as to the Lord and not to men.
- 6:16We're working for God's as a result of God's approval.
- 6:21We want to hear God say well done.
- 6:24We are not just working for, you know, in my situation, I'm not
- 6:28just working for the elders or for the congregation of
- 6:32Tabernacle. I am working for God and I want
- 6:35God to be happy with me, even if other people aren't as much.
- 6:40But doing things even following God's way does not always mean
- 6:45that we are going to quote UN quote when in life.
- 6:50Because I can do everything that I feel like God would have me
- 6:54to. I can follow the instructions
- 6:56for God's church, but there might still be someone that
- 7:00goes, well, yeah, I know you're doing what God wants you to do,
- 7:03but you're not doing what I want you to do.
- 7:05And so I'm upset with you. And so in those moments, I could
- 7:08feel like, well, God, I'm not winning because a person isn't
- 7:12satisfied with me. And God, I'm doing all the right
- 7:15things, so why aren't I winning? Like you're letting me down.
- 7:19And of course, that's the wrong mindset to have.
- 7:22The right mindset is God. Any victory, any win only comes
- 7:28from you. And so yes, I will not forget
- 7:30your instruction. I will follow your instruction,
- 7:33but I'm not going to base the results of my life off of my
- 7:37works. I am going to say God, anything
- 7:40good only ever comes from you. So here the psalmist says,
- 7:43consider my affliction and rescue me.
- 7:46I'm going through a hard time, but I remember who you are God,
- 7:50not God. Remember all of my goodness.
- 7:53He says, God, I remember who you are.
- 7:56I remember your instruction and your instructions say you are
- 8:01the rescuer, you are the Savior, and so I believe that you can
- 8:04rescue me. Verse 154, He says champion my
- 8:08cause and redeem me. Give me life as you promised.
- 8:14I note here three things that the psalmist says in verse 154
- 8:18that he's dealing with #1 he says champion my 'cause he needs
- 8:23someone to argue for the person. In the New Testament, you might
- 8:29see the word intercessor or advocate, which are ways that
- 8:34the Holy Spirit is described, ways that Jesus is even
- 8:37described. And we need someone to be in the
- 8:42rooms that we can't be in. We need someone to be in the
- 8:46mind and conscience of others that we cannot be in right now.
- 8:51There are some situations even at our church that I'm praying.
- 8:56God, you see these individuals and God, you know what is in
- 9:03their hearts. You know how they love you.
- 9:06You know how they love others. God, you know the sin that
- 9:08they're battling right now. God, would you work in them and
- 9:13would you cause your spirit to just move and transform?
- 9:17Would you? I'm praying here along with the
- 9:20Psalmist champion my cause in their hearts, that they would be
- 9:25able to see your plans for them, that they would experience this
- 9:29new life. So here this psalmist needs an
- 9:32advocate. So he says, Champion my 'cause
- 9:34God would you be the one that, if you will, you're selling this
- 9:38to others. I think far too often we
- 9:41overestimate our ability to sell our cause to others and we
- 9:46undervalue the fact that God can be the advocate and that if it
- 9:50truly is the will of God, that God can move, that other people
- 9:56would go, oh, yeah, that's that's right.
- 9:58That's exactly on the point. I think that's wonderful.
- 10:01I am so glad that there's been times in my life where God
- 10:05championed someone else's 'cause that maybe first time I I heard
- 10:09them say something, I was like, yeah, I don't really think so.
- 10:12But then God used it in an incredible way because I went,
- 10:17I, I just spent time in prayer and I tried to listen to the
- 10:21Lord and I tried to be open to his moving.
- 10:24And when that happened, God championing someone else's cause
- 10:28in my heart allowed me to go, OK, I can operate in love and
- 10:33forgiveness, or I can operate in faith and boldness and, and take
- 10:37a risk and that God used it for, for his glory.
- 10:41So believe that God really can change and work and transform
- 10:45people even when you're not there.
- 10:48And place more confidence in God's ability to change the
- 10:53hearts of others. Then you have confidence even in
- 10:56your ability to change others. If you're like, man, I'm just
- 11:00not getting anywhere with my spouse.
- 11:02They just won't listen to me. Pray and ask for God to champion
- 11:06your 'cause when it's maybe someone at your, at your church,
- 11:11like let's say you know someone that's listening to this, like
- 11:14man, God, I just really wish Brian or the elders or you know,
- 11:20Theresa or someone would change this or this or that about how
- 11:25they do things or about what they're saying in this scenario
- 11:28or whatever it might be. Pray and ask the Lord to
- 11:32champion your cause. I promise you he is more
- 11:34powerful than you. He's more persuasive than you.
- 11:38He can dig in deeper with that conviction, even deeper than you
- 11:43can't rely on the championing of God.
- 11:46So first he says champion my cause.
- 11:48Secondly, he says redeem me that God.
- 11:52We went over this in Leviticus. This would be a phrase someone
- 11:56perhaps had a debt that was too large, they couldn't pay it and
- 12:00so then they had to go into indentured servitude or in
- 12:03perhaps other nations more slavery.
- 12:07Now in Israel that was limited by the fact that you were you
- 12:13could not be held longer, held in indentured servitude, paying
- 12:19off your debt for longer than seven years.
- 12:22So that was, you know, huge praise.
- 12:24That's great. But you could still need to be
- 12:28redeemed, bought back, that your debt would be paid off so that
- 12:33then you could just be free to, you know, till the land or
- 12:38whatever your particular place of work or the way that you
- 12:42worked was. So there's redemption that is
- 12:46needed. And I know I've been in hard
- 12:48times before where I'm like, OK, God, I really need you to like
- 12:52bail me out of this because I've dug myself into a hole and I
- 12:55need you to Get Me Out of the hole.
- 12:57And I'm so thankful that the Lord is faithful to do that,
- 13:01that he's faithful to forgive. He's faithful to transform and
- 13:04to change us. Think of first John 19.
- 13:06If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us
- 13:10our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 13:15And then the end of verse 154, not only does God champion us,
- 13:18champion our 'cause he's our advocate, our intercessor.
- 13:21Not only is He the one that buys us back from disaster and
- 13:26slavery to to sin, but also he says at the end, give me life as
- 13:32you promised. God is the one that gives new
- 13:35life. Now we know God is the one that
- 13:37gives life at the very beginning.
- 13:39That's why we would believe that God is the author and the
- 13:43finisher of life that I don't get the choice to say this is
- 13:49when someone else's life is going to end.
- 13:52I don't even have the right to say this is when my life is
- 13:56going to end. I should allow that to be within
- 14:00the hands of God. Same with the beginning of life.
- 14:04But I think here even of what Jesus tells us in John 10, that
- 14:08Jesus came so that we would have life and that we would have it
- 14:11in abundance. And so here this life that can
- 14:14be given, it can be perhaps a brand new spiritual life.
- 14:18And maybe you have never placed your faith in Christ for
- 14:22salvation. You've never called on Jesus to
- 14:24be your Lord and Savior. And when you call on Jesus to be
- 14:28your Lord and Savior, you ask Him to forgive your sins and
- 14:32that you're turning your life over to Him, that He calls the
- 14:36shots now, that you will experience everlasting life,
- 14:41eternal life, just as we would hear in John 316.
- 14:44God loved the world in this way that He gave His one and only
- 14:46Son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but will
- 14:50have eternal life. So there can be that life.
- 14:55It could be an abundant life in the here and now that perhaps
- 14:59you have been living life and it does not feel like life.
- 15:02It feels like drudgery. It feels like you've been in a
- 15:05living hell and you can call on the Lord to give you new life,
- 15:11abundant life, that joy filled life, that peace filled spirit
- 15:16filled life that you would experience God's presence in
- 15:19each moment as you're walking through.
- 15:21And you can ask God to give you life.
- 15:23You can't bring yourself to spiritual life.
- 15:26That's something that has to come from God.
- 15:28You cannot redeem yourself either from sin ultimately, like
- 15:34your your end destination, you can't redeem yourself from hell
- 15:38and you will also can't redeem yourself from the sin that
- 15:40you're facing now today. You can't rescue yourself from
- 15:46your own sin. You need the Lord to help you
- 15:49that he would pull you out. So I I spent a lot of time on on
- 15:54verse 154, but it's just so rich.
- 15:56I really, really love that As we kind of finish here with these
- 16:00remaining verses, what a joy that God does not leave us to
- 16:06our own devices. Instead, He's the Savior who
- 16:09pursues and advocates for us and buys us back and gives us new
- 16:14life. He's the one that can rescue.
- 16:17The opposite of this verse 155 is salvation is far from the
- 16:20wicked because they don't study your statutes.
- 16:23The wicked have no idea where salvation or help comes from
- 16:27because it comes from the Lord, as we find out in His statutes,
- 16:31in His Word. 156 says your compassions are many.
- 16:36Yahweh, give me life according to your judgments.
- 16:39I'm thankful that God, the rescuer, the Redeemer, the life
- 16:43giver, He is not indifferent to you or me.
- 16:47In fact, He has compassion for us that He is moved in his
- 16:52innermost being to reach out in love and kindness and grace and
- 16:56gifts to us. That is his natural hearts
- 17:01state. And so our sins do not, if you
- 17:05will, they don't alienate us from God in that he says, you've
- 17:09sinned. And so I can have nothing to do
- 17:11with you. In fact, when we sin, God
- 17:15reaches out all the more. His grace, his love, his
- 17:18forgiveness, his mercy is greater.
- 17:20It it is shown to be so much greater in our brokenness and in
- 17:26our fallenness. And so I'm so thankful that
- 17:28that's the kind of God that I serve, one who does not love
- 17:31begrudgingly, but one who eagerly loves me.
- 17:36Verse 157 my persecutors and foes are many.
- 17:40I have not turned from your decrees.
- 17:43He says, God, it doesn't matter how many people are against me.
- 17:45I know where my hope is. I knew where my attention needs
- 17:50to be. My attention needs to be on you
- 17:52and on your word and on the way that you have called me to live.
- 17:56And so it doesn't matter how many people I have against me
- 17:59when I know I'm supposed to be following you and I'm not going
- 18:02to allow others to deter me from following you.
- 18:06Verse 158. I've seen the disloyal and feel
- 18:09disgust because they do not keep your word.
- 18:12I, I feel here, this word disloyal is so vivid.
- 18:17It is one that would perhaps pay lip service to God, say, Oh
- 18:20yeah, I, I'm a Christian. I don't really do the church
- 18:23thing. And and I don't know, I don't
- 18:25really have to like follow what the Bible says.
- 18:28I can just, you know, kind of live my life.
- 18:31I I commiserate here with the psalmist.
- 18:34That's disgusting that like to try and say yes, God is truth
- 18:39and love and savior of my life, and also I'm going to ignore him
- 18:43and I'm going to do whatever I want to do.
- 18:45That is the height of arrogance. And may we as the people of God
- 18:49never stoop that low. May we say, no, God, if you
- 18:54bought me, if you redeemed me, if you saved me, if you gave me
- 18:56everlasting life, then my whole life belongs to you.
- 19:00And so I'm going to act and speak and think today like
- 19:05you're in charge of me. Verse 159 Consider how I love
- 19:08your precepts. Yahweh, give me life according
- 19:12to your faithful love. We can have our love for for
- 19:16God, for his word, for his command, for his way of living,
- 19:19but what is most important is not our love for God.
- 19:23It is God's love for us. I just noticed there.
- 19:26Consider how I love your precepts.
- 19:29He doesn't say y'all would give me life according to my love for
- 19:32your precepts. He says God give me life
- 19:34according to your faithful love. My love is just a little shadow
- 19:39of his immense, beautiful, wonderful love.
- 19:44And then finally in verse 160, the entirety of your word is
- 19:47truth. Each of your righteous judgments
- 19:50endures forever. This is one of the reasons we
- 19:54would believe in the, yeah, certainly the inspiration of
- 19:58Scripture, that Scripture is not strictly from man, but holy men
- 20:03of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
- 20:08And we would believe in verbal plenary and inspiration.
- 20:12That is that God inspired every word of Scripture and that all
- 20:16of Scripture is true, and that there's no point in Scripture
- 20:19where I can go to and I can say, well this is right, but this is
- 20:23incorrect. Now we want to determine divide.
- 20:27Scripture correctly. We're going to read Proverbs
- 20:30differently than we read the epistles.
- 20:32We're going to read the narrative portions of Scripture
- 20:35differently than we read the like prophetic or the
- 20:38apocalyptic portions of Scripture.
- 20:41We read them according to the genres in which they are given.
- 20:44But all the Scripture is given by God as breathed out by God,
- 20:49as Second Timothy 316 says. And it is profitable for
- 20:52doctrine, for proof, for correction, for instruction and
- 20:55righteousness, that the man or woman of God may be complete,
- 21:00thoroughly equipped for every good work.
- 21:03And how do we have this word of God?
- 21:05Because He gave it to us. Because He wants us to know what
- 21:08His will is so that we can follow it.
- 21:12He doesn't want to leave you in the dark as it relates to your
- 21:14walk with Him or about what your life would entail.
- 21:18He wants to give you all of the tools because He is the one that
- 21:22saves, that gives victory, that redeems the Champions, That is
- 21:26our intercessor. He is the compassionate God.
- 21:29He is the one that is loyal to us, the One that loves us.
- 21:33And so pardon me. And so this truth telling, truth
- 21:36giving God is the one that we should give ourselves over
- 21:40entirely to. Thanks for tuning in today.
- 21:42I hope that it was an encouragement to you.
- 21:44Next episode will be in verses 161 through 168.
- 21:48Thanks for tuning in.
