Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER1: Each day, a team of 11 students works together to produce Panther Vision, our Oregon High School student news update.
- 0:09This team was recently recognized as one of the best in the state by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association.
- 0:15Today, we're going to hear all about it from our student team of producers and their advisor.
- 0:24SPEAKER2: Welcome to this episode of Inside the OSD podcast, where it's all about the kids.
- 0:29Here is your host, lifelong educator, and our superintendent, Doctor Leslie Bergstrom.
- 0:37SPEAKER1: We're going to start our discussion with Panther Vision advisor Eric Rogers.
- 0:41So could you start by introducing yourselves to our listeners and your role in the OSD?
- 0:45SPEAKER2: Yes. Okay. I practiced this -- "multimedia production and technology--technology specialist" is my official title.
- 0:52Okay. Um, which basically means I work with anything that's district production wise.
- 0:58Um, and then also, if students have issues with Chromebooks or teachers need computer fixes, that's part of my job.
- 1:03SPEAKER1: How much? Uh, how is your job divided in that way?
- 1:06Like how much time do you spend on one thing versus the other?
- 1:08That's interesting to me.
- 1:10SPEAKER2: Yeah. So I will get in before school and kind of work on, you know, scripting, setting up, gathering stories for Panther Vision.
- 1:17Right. And during that time is also if there's tickets that came in for things that were need to be fixed around the school, you got to do that, then I'm kind
- 1:24of balancing that. Yeah.
- 1:25So I don't know, like what percentage that splits up to be.
- 1:28But it -- sounds like a busy morning.
- 1:30It mixes all together.
- 1:32Yeah.
- 1:32SPEAKER1: Well what does it take to put on a production of this quality every day?
- 1:36SPEAKER2: Um, well, I think it's, it's mostly about the setup and communication and how like the organization of getting students in.
- 1:44So we have a schedule with our, our news anchors who come in.
- 1:47Um, so they're right now about like lunchtime is kind of when they come in to record it.
- 1:51So we'll get everything set up.
- 1:53Any editing that was from a past story gets done.
- 1:56Um, so that's kind of the organization of how that happens.
- 2:00SPEAKER1: Thank you. So you have about, uh, 11 students, uh, a pretty great team who put on Panther Visions each day.
- 2:06What's special about this group?
- 2:08SPEAKER2: Well, they each -- they each bring something different to the table.
- 2:11So, you know, you have some people who are more behind the scenes and keeping things organized.
- 2:16And that was something that, you know, in the past years, I said it'd be so nice if I had an assistant of some kind.
- 2:21And then, you know, we have, uh, you know, people like Morgan Bohrer who came along to kind of fill that role.
- 2:26And then you have, um, Haylee Vejvoda, who's doing some of that as well, and then managing a website, which is, um, you know, the website that we have was
- 2:34currently available only to staff members on the OHS site.
- 2:37So we're kind of building that up.
- 2:39Um, and so thanks to Haylee and Morgan for that.
- 2:41Um, but each each one of them has a different, a different element to what they do.
- 2:45And some people are learning more about the journalistic skills of getting out in the field and reporting.
- 2:50And some people are going to be more, um, you know, I want to be a news anchor.
- 2:53So we're building those skills up.
- 2:55So each one of them's kind of heading in a little bit of a different direction, but they all have a role within Panther Vision that kind of helps put everything
- 3:03together.
- 3:03SPEAKER1: How fulfilling will it be in five years when you start to see some of your students show up on news shows around the state or around the country?
- 3:12That will be really exciting.
- 3:14It will
- 3:14SPEAKER2: be. And I think -- we're already seeing some of the past members of of our team doing that.
- 3:19And, um, we saw Betsabe Ramos, one of our former hosts, um, in Green Bay, um, for our award ceremony that, um, she was
- 3:28mentioning how she is now basically running the show at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for their news program.
- 3:34So it's it's already like, you know, you see some of the, the skills building here.
- 3:38And then when they take it on to the next level, like it's, it's it's fulfilling to know that.
- 3:42All right. You know, I was -- I was a small piece of you know what they are then taking those skills to develop and it's you know.
- 3:49SPEAKER1: It's a great experience you're providing them though.
- 3:52So what skills and qualities are you hoping the students take away from this experience for their future?
- 3:58SPEAKER2: I think depending on what their what their role is, if they can gather some kind of professional news, um, news judgment and, and
- 4:08writing skills and investigative skills and how to interview, I think the hardest part about interviewing, for me at least, was you have a list of
- 4:16questions that you kind of want to ask going into an interview, but then you have to be able to listen to what they're saying, because you never know where
- 4:23that path is going to take them on that, on that, um, on the interview part.
- 4:26So I think that's kind of a couple different lessons to learn.
- 4:32You have to
- 4:33SPEAKER1: really be able to think on your feet.
- 4:35You can't plan it all out perfectly.
- 4:37Right? Yeah.
- 4:37SPEAKER2: It's you know, thinking on your -- on your feet is definitely one of those, one of those skills.
- 4:41And I'm glad to be a small part of what they're what they're learning.
- 4:45And I think, you know Associated Press Stylebook and, you know, learning all those little journalistic writing elements are, are a huge part of what's going
- 4:53to take them, um, to hopefully a bright future in journalism or something similar.
- 4:58Thank you.
- 5:01SPEAKER1: Now let's turn to some of our students from the team.
- 5:04So could you each start by introducing yourself to our listeners, your year in school and your role in Panther Vision?
- 5:12SPEAKER3: I'm Cole Krueger, I'm a senior here at OHS and I do Panther Vision Sports.
- 5:16SPEAKER4: I am Morgan Bohrer, I'm a junior at OHS and I do Panther Vision's Media Management.
- 5:23SPEAKER1: I'm Haylee Vejvoda, I'm a senior, and I do news roundups and work on the website and other various things.
- 5:32Thank you. All right, so the next question is one I'd like each of you to answer, but I'm going to start with you, Haylee, and go back -- backwards.
- 5:40What is involved in fulfilling your part of Panther Vision every day?
- 5:44So most days right now I'm working on the website.
- 5:48I kind of built and revamped the website so that it'd be an easier access for students and staff and even community members outside of the school
- 5:57district to kind of access and see what we're doing and kind of get updated news.
- 6:02Um, outside of that, usually once a week I'll either host Panther Vision or I will film news roundups, which is kind of world or state news.
- 6:12That must take a lot of time.
- 6:14So how much time does it take you a week as part of your part of your schedule?
- 6:18Part of your life?
- 6:19Um, I'm in here about an hour every day.
- 6:21Are you? Yeah. Wow.
- 6:23All right, Morgan, how about you?
- 6:25SPEAKER4: Um, so I also work with Haylee on the website.
- 6:28Okay. Um, I also do various other calendar things, making sure everyone gets their time in the studio, as well as whatever really needs to be done.
- 6:38Emails, scheduling things.
- 6:41Um, the social media is always up to date from our past trip.
- 6:45And then also, like whoever's recording in here, I might post a little blurb on the Instagram page or
- 6:51SPEAKER1: things like that. And about how much time a week is it taking you?
- 6:55SPEAKER4: I'm in here a couple a couple hours a week.
- 6:57SPEAKER1: Okay. Thank you.
- 6:59All right, Cole, tell me about your your role.
- 7:01SPEAKER3: So with sports, I'm just writing scripts every week.
- 7:04I film two times a week.
- 7:06Um, just keeping up with Panther athletics.
- 7:08Panther athletes.
- 7:09Uh, yeah. Just keeping up with the sports calendar and making sure I know about athletes, individual stories and stuff like that.
- 7:16SPEAKER1: Okay, so that is interesting because it's not only the time filming, but it's the time that it takes to understand people's individual stories.
- 7:24So how much time is that, um, taking in your life to, to do this good work.
- 7:29Well, I'm
- 7:29SPEAKER3: down here in the studio a couple hours a day, but any time I have, I don't know any extra time in study hall or in class.
- 7:37I'm just looking at the sports calendar, looking at, you know, Oregon Observer, seeing what's going on with our Panther athletes because I'm classmates with
- 7:44these guys. So you're talking to them?
- 7:45Yeah. I'm just trying to see what what's up with them.
- 7:47SPEAKER1: Yeah, that is really cool.
- 7:49So what's been your favorite part about this experience?
- 7:52SPEAKER3: Uh, I've -- i'd be lying if I, if I said I didn't enjoy all of it.
- 7:55I love all of it.
- 7:57But just like I said, just getting to know people and being appreciated by students and more importantly, student athletes.
- 8:02I mean, there's people who I don't even know on a personal level, come up to me and thank me for talking about them on Panther Vision, mentioning them, um,
- 8:10talking about their sports teams and stuff.
- 8:12And yeah, it's it makes my day when they say that.
- 8:15SPEAKER1: So the gratitude from other people is a pretty cool part of it.
- 8:17SPEAKER3: Exactly.
- 8:18SPEAKER1: Morgan, what are you thinking is your favorite part?
- 8:20SPEAKER4: Well, I've built really good relationships here in the studio as well as, like with, um, classmates from other grade levels that I wouldn't normally talk to,
- 8:28as well as just kind of getting to, like, fulfill my dream of wanting to like, run things and be a part of media management.
- 8:36Yeah. So it's been a really good step, like for later on in college.
- 8:39SPEAKER1: Absolutely. And how about you, Haylee?
- 8:41Uh, kind of building off what Morgan said.
- 8:43I think, like the team building and the community aspect that we've had here in Panther Vision has been, like, super beneficial.
- 8:49And I've really, like, appreciated that.
- 8:51Um, outside of that, I feel like I've had so much like, real world and like, career experiences to kind of take, take, take with me if I'm going to go into
- 9:00journalism or something like adjacent to that.
- 9:03Right. So, well, you know, what's so impressive for each of you is that it isn't just about the on camera work.
- 9:09You're doing all of the important tasks that are behind the scene to pull this all together.
- 9:14That is super impressive and how you work with one another.
- 9:18Tell me, how do you deal with conflict?
- 9:20Because you're all trying to do interesting things to make something important happen, so conflict is bound to come up.
- 9:27What do you do?
- 9:29SPEAKER5: Um, I actually feel like we haven't had too many conflicts here.
- 9:34I feel like mostly it's just been, like, scheduling conflicts.
- 9:37Like trying to find the time to, like, uh, get in.
- 9:40If there's --when we're doing fully student produced episodes, it can be, like, more stressful trying to, like, pack everything into a limited amount of time.
- 9:48But I think it's it is, again, like relying on each other and then having that communication.
- 9:52SPEAKER4: Communication.
- 9:53SPEAKER1: Okay. Thank you.
- 9:54I was hoping you would bring that up because that's that's what makes us all work is really good communication and collaborative relationships.
- 10:02And when you think about whatever's next for you, whether it's this field or another field, that is an amazing thing to take with you.
- 10:10Amazing. So -- and I'm not at all surprised -- Panther Vision was recently recognized as one of the best in the state.
- 10:18And so what does that mean to you and what is it going to be like to attend the celebration at Lambeau?
- 10:23And any of you can just pop in.
- 10:25SPEAKER3: Uh, it means a lot just to be a part of something as cool and as fun as this.
- 10:29Yeah, but, uh, I want to thank Mr.
- 10:31Rogers, obviously, for giving me the opportunity, because it's been a great environment here at Panther Vision.
- 10:36And it was a great environment at Lambeau, too.
- 10:38Um, I got the opportunity to listen to some Wisconsin sports media members talk about their experience in the work field, kind of seeing how how we compare to
- 10:47their, uh, life and their work field.
- 10:49And that was kind of the highlight of my day at Lambeau, because I want to work in sports media.
- 10:53And it was really cool to see how things kind of run with the professionals.
- 10:56SPEAKER1: I bet you have a leg up on a lot of the people who were professionals.
- 11:00If they think back to what it was like when they were 17 or 18, you're doing things I bet you nobody else was doing.
- 11:05So that's really cool.
- 11:07How about one of you?
- 11:09SPEAKER6: Yeah.
- 11:10SPEAKER5: Um, I feel like kind of specifically with, um, Lambeau Field.
- 11:15It was cool to, like, get the award, but I think it was more so like, I got to interview, um, former host Betsabe Ramos and also the the
- 11:24emcee of the event, Kyle Wallace.
- 11:26And I feel like for, for me, that was kind of like my big takeaways is that was really cool for me to kind of, um, put into action, like skills that I've been
- 11:35working on all throughout the year and last year and kind of like do it in the field.
- 11:40I think that was just a really, really cool experience for me.
- 11:43SPEAKER1: Oh I bet. How about you, Morgan?
- 11:45SPEAKER4: It was super fun.
- 11:46I enjoyed getting to talk to new people and watch Haylee do her thing and, um, get to like, mess around with, like, recording.
- 11:55And then we had, like, headshots, which was really fun.
- 11:58Yeah. And kind of learning how, like, some of the camera stuff worked was really fun.
- 12:02And like, behind the scenes stuff was awesome.
- 12:05SPEAKER1: Did you get to take home headshots that you can use professionally?
- 12:08SPEAKER4: Yes, they we got headshots taken and they're emailing them to us.
- 12:12SPEAKER1: Oh, well, that could be super handy next year.
- 12:14All right. So, um, we talked about this a little bit, but finally, what skills do you think you're building and what do you think you're going to take away
- 12:22from this into your future?
- 12:26SPEAKER4: I can go. Okay. Um.
- 12:28I've learned a lot about communication and building relationships with people not only like us here, but also like in the community and learning how to bring
- 12:36other people from the community in and figuring out how to widespread our media.
- 12:42And it's just been such a fun experience and a really good, like, stepping stone for like, going into college.
- 12:49SPEAKER1: Thanks, Morgan.
- 12:51SPEAKER3: Um, another thing I would say is writing skills.
- 12:54Um, as someone who wants to go into the journalism field, just honing my writing skills and writing the scripts, it's going to mean a lot eventually,
- 13:02down the road, as I continue to improve on this journey, I'm going off to college, you know, as a senior.
- 13:07It's a new step in my life, and I'm looking forward to it.
- 13:11SPEAKER1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:12And Haylee?
- 13:13SPEAKER5: I think it's like a combination of skills that I'm going to take with me to college and potentially my career, but also like a lot of the
- 13:22connections that I've made, um, I feel like I'll take with me for a long time and that's going to be super beneficial in the future.
- 13:31SPEAKER1: I bet it will. Remember that you can find links to all episodes of Inside the OSD and submit topic ideas on our
