- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Monday.
- 0:15It is the first day of September.
- 0:18That means it's meant to be spring, but I'm literally
- 0:21wrapped up in a blanket with socks and slippers and warm
- 0:25things on because winter is saying goodbye with one last
- 0:29powerful punch of iciness. So if you're here with me in the
- 0:34chilly parts of the world, hello.
- 0:36If you are far away, somewhere much warmer, ohh, that sounds
- 0:39much more comfortable. But wherever you are and no
- 0:41matter how many layers of clothes you got on right now, we
- 0:44are starting a new week and we are continuing along in this
- 0:48journey of hearing all about how Jesus is building his church
- 0:53using these amazing moments where his Spirit is drawing the
- 0:57apostles into these places with these unexpected people, these
- 1:01Gentiles. Who knew that God's church would
- 1:03not just be for the Jews, but for everyone else.
- 1:07That's including me and you. So without further ado, friends,
- 1:11let us dive in and continue reading Acts Chapter 11.
- 1:25Soon the news reached the apostles and other believers in
- 1:29Judea that the Gentiles had received the word of God.
- 1:33But when Peter arrived back in Jerusalem, the Jewish believers
- 1:36criticised him. You entered the home of Gentiles
- 1:40and even ate with them, they said.
- 1:43Then Peter told them exactly what had happened.
- 1:46I was in the town of Joppa, he said.
- 1:49And while I was praying, I went into a trance and saw a vision.
- 1:52Something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners
- 1:56from the sky, and it came right down to me.
- 1:59When I looked inside the sheet, I saw all sorts of tame and wild
- 2:03animals, reptiles and birds, and I heard a voice say, Get up,
- 2:07Peter, kill and eat them. No, Lord, I replied.
- 2:12I've never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared
- 2:15impure or unclean. But the voice from heaven spoke
- 2:19again. Do not call something unclean if
- 2:22God has made it clean. This happened three times before
- 2:27the sheet and all it contained was pulled back up to heaven.
- 2:31Just then, three men who had been sent from Cesarea arrived
- 2:35at the house where we were staying.
- 2:37The Holy Spirit told me to go with them and not worry, that
- 2:40they were Gentiles. These six brothers here
- 2:43accompanied me and we soon entered the home of the man who
- 2:47had sent for us. He told us how an Angel had
- 2:50appeared to him in his home and had told him.
- 2:52Send messengers to Joppa and summon a man named Simon Peter.
- 2:57He will tell you how you and everyone in your household can
- 3:01be saved. As I began to speak, Peter
- 3:04continued. The Holy Spirit fell on them
- 3:07just as He fell on us at the beginning.
- 3:10Then I thought of the Lord's words when he said, John
- 3:12baptised with water, but you will be baptised with the Holy
- 3:16Spirit. And since God gave these
- 3:19Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord
- 3:23Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God's way?
- 3:27When the others heard this, they stopped objecting and began
- 3:31praising God, they said. We can see that God is also
- 3:35given the Gentiles the privilege of repenting of their sins and
- 3:39receiving eternal life. Meanwhile, the believers who had
- 3:44been scattered during the persecution after Stephen's
- 3:46death travelled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch of
- 3:51Syria. They preached the word of God,
- 3:54but only to Jews. However, some of the believers
- 3:58who went to Antioch from Cyprus and Cyrene began preaching to
- 4:01the Gentiles about the Lord Jesus.
- 4:04The power of the Lord was with them, and a large number of the
- 4:07Gentiles believed and turned to the Lord.
- 4:11When the church at Jerusalem heard what had happened, they
- 4:14sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw this
- 4:18evidence of God's blessing, he was filled with joy, and he
- 4:22encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord.
- 4:25Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in
- 4:29faith, and many people were brought to the Lord.
- 4:32Then Barnabas went on to Tarsus to look for Saul.
- 4:36When he found him, he brought him back to Antioch.
- 4:40Both of them stayed there with the church for a full year,
- 4:43teaching large crowds of people. It was at Antioch that the
- 4:47believers were first called Christians.
- 4:50During this time some prophets travelled from Jerusalem to
- 4:54Antioch. One of them, named Agabus, stood
- 4:57up in one of the meetings and predicted by the Spirit that
- 5:01great famine was coming upon the entire Roman world.
- 5:05This was fulfilled during the reign of Claudius.
- 5:08So the believers in Antioch decided to send relief to the
- 5:11brothers and sisters in Judea, everyone giving as much as they
- 5:15could. This they did, entrusting their
- 5:18gifts to Barnabas and Saul to take to the elders of the church
- 5:22in Jerusalem. Our Lord Jesus, we hear of your
- 5:36message and your Spirit going out and convicting people of the
- 5:41truth about you. And as this happened, that these
- 5:45communities became generous and inclusive and looking out for
- 5:50those vulnerable ones among them.
- 5:53Lord, we know that this is your heart.
- 5:55This is your way. And as we look around in our
- 5:58broken world, we see such a need for you and your Spirit and your
- 6:03Kingdom to be fleshed out more fully around us.
- 6:07Holy Spirit, come move in our lands, Move in our cities, move
- 6:14in our towns, move in our families, move in our friendship
- 6:16circles, move in our communities so that your way can become the
- 6:23way that people live and act and treat each other now.
- 6:30We love you Jesus, and you have changed everything for us.
- 6:35I pray that we live as ambassadors in your way, living
- 6:40with your priorities in our heart.
- 6:43Empower us and send us. In your name we pray Jesus,
- 6:47Amen.
