• 1:41
Speaker 2: day away from Friday, one day away from the weekend,
• 1:43
Speaker 2: one day away from the long weekend for some, for
• 1:47
Speaker 2: Labor Day. Metro News meteorologist Brian Hughes says the heat's
• 1:49
Speaker 2: going to continue today. Heat advisory remains in effect. Air
• 1:52
Speaker 2: temps in the mid to upper 90s, but will feel
• 1:55
Speaker 2: more like the low 100s with the heat index. Clear
• 1:57
Speaker 2: and muggy tonight, lows in the mid-70s. Tomorrow, storms are
• 2:00
Speaker 2: on the way, hopefully not impacting anybody. High school football
• 2:03
Speaker 2: tomorrow night. Brian says the storms will be widely scattered.
• 2:06
Speaker 2: But if you get them in your neighborhood, they could
• 2:08
Speaker 2: be severe, should be in the mid-90s. Widespread showers and
• 2:11
Speaker 2: thunderstorms on Saturday. Not good news if you're heading to
• 2:15
Speaker 2: Morgantown for WVU's opener. But we are at least going
• 2:18
Speaker 2: to get some relief from the heat ties on Saturday
• 2:21
Speaker 2: in the upper 80s. Sunday and, well, you know, Sunday
• 2:25
Speaker 2: and into Labor Day Monday actually looking pretty good. Cooler temps,
• 2:28
Speaker 2: definitely less humid, lots of sun after we get rid
• 2:30
Speaker 2: of some morning rain on Sunday. Again, much more comfortable
• 2:33
Speaker 2: both days. Highs are going to be in the mid-80s.
• 2:35
Speaker 2: Follow Metro News meteorologist Brian Hughes and the team by
• 2:38
Speaker 2: downloading the Metro News television app and on social media
• 2:41
Speaker 2: as well. Coming up at noon today, Kanawha County will
• 2:44
Speaker 2: be getting a new county commissioner. The swearing-in for Austin
• 2:46
Speaker 2: Gessel is sent for noon today. He'll be completing the
• 2:49
Speaker 2: term of Lance Wheeler, who resigned to take over the
• 2:52
Speaker 2: ambulance service in Kanawha County. Austin Gessel is going to
• 2:54
Speaker 2: join us later in the show. prior to being sworn
• 2:58
Speaker 2: in later today, plus several other things to get to
• 3:00
Speaker 2: in the news. And as always, your calls and texts.
• 3:02
Speaker 2: Guarantee Bank Hotline 304-345-5858. Tony Taylor text 304-935-5008. Want to
• 3:05
Speaker 2: welcome to the show now our good friend from the
• 3:08
Speaker 2: city of Nitro. It's Joe Stevens. Good morning, sir, and
• 3:10
Speaker 2: welcome to the show.
• 3:17
  Speaker 5: Good morning, David.
• 3:18
Speaker 6: I hope Thursday is treating you well so far.
• 3:21
Speaker 2: Well, so far, but we're only a few hours in.
• 3:24
Speaker 2: So get back with me in six, seven hours down
• 3:26
  Speaker 2: the road.
• 3:29
Speaker 6: As always, just put the plow down and keep on pushing.
• 3:32
Speaker 2: That's all you can do. So for the fourth year,
• 3:36
Speaker 2: Nitro in St. Albans are going to team up for
• 3:38
Speaker 2: a joint Labor Day weekend celebration on Sunday night with
• 3:41
Speaker 2: fireworks and whatnot. Joe, talk about how this whole thing
• 3:45
Speaker 2: came about four years ago.
• 3:48
Speaker 6: Well, Dave, I got called one morning. I was just
• 3:50
Speaker 6: sitting in my office, and the phone rang, and where
• 3:54
Speaker 6: I might have gotten a text, it was basically I
• 3:56
Speaker 6: was being called to the principal's office.
• 3:58
  Speaker 7: Of course.
• 3:58
Speaker 6: The other one is Mayor Casebolt's office. And so I
• 4:02
Speaker 6: walked across the street, and as I walked into his office,
• 4:06
Speaker 6: I said, this is going to be different. Because joining
• 4:10
Speaker 6: him in his office was the mayor of St. Albans,
• 4:13
Speaker 6: Scott James. Mm-hmm. And I said, okay, guys, what's up?
• 4:18
Speaker 6: What have I got to plan or what do I
• 4:20
Speaker 6: got to do? He goes, well, you know, we both
• 4:22
Speaker 6: do fireworks. Both cities do fireworks celebration and a show.
• 4:28
Speaker 6: And we'd like to combine our efforts to be one
• 4:32
Speaker 6: big show. I said, well, that sounds like a good idea.
• 4:35
Speaker 1: And you know what?
• 4:36
Speaker 6: I've been thinking about this kind of the same thing.
• 4:39
Speaker 6: And what I want to do is I want to
• 4:41
Speaker 6: close a bridge. and they both looked at me like
• 4:44
Speaker 6: with deer, uh, you know, the headlights and the, uh,
• 4:47
Speaker 6: the deer and the headlights kind of thing. And I,
• 4:49
Speaker 6: they said, what are you talking about? I said, yeah,
• 4:51
Speaker 6: I want to close the Dick Henderson bridge one night
• 4:53
Speaker 6: and let people walk on the bridge and, uh, view
• 4:57
Speaker 6: the fireworks. And they said, well, how are you going
• 5:00
Speaker 6: to close the bridge? I said, I'm going to ask.
• 5:03
Speaker 6: And so, you know, and, and, and to be honest,
• 5:07
Speaker 6: I contacted the, uh, department of highways at the time. And, and,
• 5:12
Speaker 6: And they kind of just said, okay, here's the permit.
• 5:15
Speaker 6: And they worked with me on what we had to
• 5:20
Speaker 6: do for EMS and notifying the public and everything. So
• 5:25
Speaker 6: that was four years ago, and we're going to do
• 5:28
Speaker 6: it again Sunday night.
• 5:29
Speaker 2: I was going to say, how exactly does one plan
• 5:32
Speaker 2: on– you know, closing a major bridge like the Dick
• 5:35
Speaker 2: Henderson Bridge. So you just call the Department of Bridge
• 5:38
Speaker 2: Closures and just said, all right, all right, Bill, this
• 5:42
Speaker 2: is your thing or whatever your name is. We're going
• 5:44
Speaker 2: to close a bridge for one night. I think it's
• 5:46
Speaker 2: a great idea. You know, that's the bridge that connects
• 5:49
Speaker 2: the two communities, Nitro and St.
• 5:50
  Speaker 6: Albans.
• 5:51
Speaker 2: So people actually get to walk out on the bridge, which,
• 5:54
Speaker 2: you know, you don't normally get to do, kind of
• 5:56
Speaker 2: fellowship one with the other, the two communities and anybody
• 5:59
Speaker 2: else that shows up and take in the fireworks. I
• 6:01
Speaker 2: think it's pretty cool.
• 6:02
Speaker 6: Well, everybody's talking right now that the initial fireworks are
• 6:06
Speaker 6: going to be Friday night for the Battle of the
• 6:09
Speaker 6: Bridge football game. But that's another story for another time. But, yeah,
• 6:14
Speaker 6: at 830, the Nitro police on our side, on the
• 6:18
Speaker 6: Nitro side, shut down the bridge. And then the St.
• 6:21
Speaker 6: Albans police and the fire department shut down the bridge
• 6:24
Speaker 6: on the St. Albans side at Route 21. and Route 25,
• 6:29
Speaker 6: and folks come walking out. And I'm going to tell
• 6:31
Speaker 6: you there's a couple thousand folks that come out on
• 6:33
Speaker 6: the bridge because the fireworks are set off at the
• 6:37
Speaker 6: boat ramp. over at Roadside Park over in St. Albans
• 6:42
Speaker 6: right there. That's where the pyro sets up and that's
• 6:46
Speaker 6: where the fireworks are let off. And viewing from the
• 6:50
Speaker 6: top of the bridge is like magnificent. And there is
• 6:53
Speaker 6: a safety shot area that actually includes one of the
• 6:57
Speaker 6: lanes on Route 60 and parts of the river that
• 7:02
Speaker 6: And we handle, you know, the patrolling of the river.
• 7:06
Speaker 6: The St. Albans Fire Department, the South Charleston Fire Department,
• 7:10
Speaker 6: and Charleston Police Department are out there. We've got a
• 7:14
Speaker 6: map and, you know, just kind of coordinating that because
• 7:16
Speaker 6: a lot of folks come out with their boats and
• 7:18
Speaker 6: everything to watch the fireworks. But it's just a cool
• 7:22
Speaker 6: way of two communities together. Getting together for a fun
• 7:25
Speaker 6: time for everybody to have, you know, just on a
• 7:28
Speaker 6: Sunday night. And as you just mentioned a little bit ago,
• 7:32
Speaker 6: Brian Hughes is saying that we're going to have pretty
• 7:34
  Speaker 6: good weather.
• 7:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, there's some rain expected Sunday morning. But after that,
• 7:38
Speaker 2: it looks really good for both Sunday and Monday. So
• 7:40
Speaker 2: it's going to be really, really nice when you go
• 7:42
Speaker 2: to do this on Sunday night. Now, again, you start
• 7:44
Speaker 2: shutting down the bridge there about 830. And then the
• 7:47
Speaker 2: fireworks will start around 930. What time do things generally speak?
• 7:51
Speaker 2: I know you can't get it exact, but what time
• 7:54
Speaker 2: do things generally start to get back to normal? When
• 7:56
Speaker 2: do they reopen the bridges?
• 7:58
Speaker 6: We have the bridges closed from officially from 830 until 1030.
• 8:03
Speaker 6: But usually things are open around 10 o'clock or so.
• 8:07
Speaker 6: But officially 830 to 1030. We also per the permit,
• 8:12
Speaker 6: we have a safety lane, which is on the west
• 8:14
Speaker 6: side of the bridge going over. It's a lane so that.
• 8:18
Speaker 6: If any of the first responders, ambulances, that sort of thing,
• 8:22
Speaker 6: have to go across the bridge one way or the other,
• 8:25
Speaker 6: we have that lane open. So there is a safety
• 8:29
Speaker 6: lane for traffic, for emergency traffic during the 8.30 to 10.30 period.
• 8:35
Speaker 6: But usually it's about 10 o'clock where we go, okay,
• 8:39
Speaker 6: we're done. Let's open it back up kind of thing.
• 8:43
Speaker 6: But officially 8.30 to 10.30, just to kind of have
• 8:44
  Speaker 6: that buffer.
• 8:47
Speaker 2: Talking to Joe Stevens from the city of Nitro. Energy
• 8:50
Speaker 2: demand is rising fast. A meeting that starts right here
• 8:53
Speaker 2: in West Virginia. With more than 75 years of experience,
• 8:55
Speaker 2: TC Energy proudly operates a 2,300-mile Columbia gas transmission system.
• 9:00
Speaker 2: Investing in local communities, supporting jobs, and helping deliver the
• 9:02
Speaker 2: reliable natural gas that powers homes, businesses, and industries across
• 9:06
Speaker 2: the state. Because when West Virginia grows, America grows. TC Energy.
• 9:09
Speaker 2: Energy Connected, learn more at tcenergy.com. I do have to
• 9:13
Speaker 2: ask you, what was that first year like? Because I
• 9:15
Speaker 2: remember I've interviewed you about this just about every year,
• 9:18
Speaker 2: you know, you've done this. And I'm just kind of curious,
• 9:20
Speaker 2: when you got this idea and you sold it to
• 9:23
Speaker 2: the community, we talked about it on the radio, put
• 9:25
Speaker 2: it on social media, so on and so forth. What
• 9:27
Speaker 2: was that first year like?
• 9:30
Speaker 6: The craziest thing was when a driver came up and
• 9:36
Speaker 6: we had blocked the– Nitro side of the bridge on
• 9:43
Speaker 6: Route 25 there. And they said, but I've got to
• 9:46
Speaker 6: get over to get my Chinese food.
• 9:48
Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you know, all bets are off if
• 9:51
Speaker 2: it's Chinese food, man.
• 9:53
Speaker 6: I mean, exactly. And we said, well, you know, you
• 9:56
Speaker 6: got the interstate and you got the Dunbar Bridge. And
• 9:59
Speaker 6: that's what you got to do. But you don't understand.
• 10:01
Speaker 6: I've got to get my Chinese food. And the officer just,
• 10:05
Speaker 6: you know, just said, I'm sorry, but this is the way.
• 10:09
Speaker 6: But that was the biggest challenge the whole year.
• 10:12
Speaker 2: So just know, if you have ordered food from anywhere,
• 10:15
Speaker 2: we're giving you fair warning that the Dick Henderson Bridge
• 10:18
Speaker 2: is going to be closed Sunday night about 830 or so.
• 10:22
Speaker 2: So you need to make arrangements to get your crab rangoon. OK,
• 10:25
Speaker 2: because it is going to be closed from about 830
• 10:28
Speaker 2: till about 1030. So please plan accordingly, Jim.
• 10:33
Speaker 6: Exactly, and believe me when I say at 9.15, there
• 10:37
Speaker 6: will be a warning shot allowing people to know because
• 10:41
Speaker 6: 15 minutes from then, at 9.25, we'll throw the switch
• 10:45
Speaker 6: to turn all the lights off on the bridge, and
• 10:48
  Speaker 6: at 9.30, we'll have about an 18 to 20-minute show
• 10:52
Speaker 6: that will blow you away. It really will. It's a
• 10:55
Speaker 6: fun time, and... And again, it's something that two communities
• 10:59
Speaker 6: get together to make sure everybody enjoys themselves on a
• 11:03
Speaker 6: Sunday night in Kanawha Valley. All right.
• 11:07
Speaker 2: Before we let you go and before we recap this
• 11:09
Speaker 2: whole thing, I do want to mention this to you.
• 11:12
Speaker 2: And we'll probably have you back on to talk about
• 11:14
Speaker 2: it in the next couple of days. And we'll have
• 11:15
Speaker 2: you back again. But Boomtown Days are coming up, right?
• 11:19
Speaker 6: A week from this Saturday, September 12th, Boomtown Days are scheduled.
• 11:24
Speaker 6: One of the highlights is the annual Nitro Antique Car
• 11:27
Speaker 6: Club car show. About 100, 150 cars will be out
• 11:31
Speaker 6: on 2nd Avenue. Plus, we will have kids games. We
• 11:36
Speaker 6: will have professional wrestling on 21st Street. We have bands
• 11:40
Speaker 6: throughout the day, the Barnholler Boys, the Velvet Brothers. and
• 11:43
Speaker 6: also Hair Supply from down in.
• 11:45
  Speaker 2: Your old Neffwood.
• 11:46
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's my boys. They will be performing. Your colleague
• 11:51
Speaker 6: Steve Bishop is the master of ceremonies all day. We've
• 11:55
Speaker 6: got about 35 or 40 vendors, food trucks. It's kind
• 12:00
Speaker 6: of the homecoming for the city of Nitro, for the
• 12:04
Speaker 6: boomtown city of Nitro, and we'll have a parade. At
• 12:08
Speaker 6: 10 o'clock, coming down Route 25 there from Pickens Road,
• 12:13
Speaker 6: the First Avenue. So just a fun time had by all,
• 12:16
Speaker 6: but that is Boomtown Days on 12th of September.
• 12:20
Speaker 2: And I will have you on next week. Remind me
• 12:23
Speaker 2: to remind you to remind me that I'll have you
• 12:25
Speaker 2: on the show next week. By the way, I have
• 12:26
Speaker 2: been voluntold, but I'll be driving a station vehicle during
• 12:29
Speaker 2: that parade, so I will be seeing you then.
• 12:33
Speaker 6: David, it's always a pleasure to be in your company,
• 12:35
Speaker 6: my friend. You're a professional pronunciator at its best. All right.
• 12:38
Speaker 2: So, again, the activities this coming Sunday night, and they're
• 12:42
Speaker 2: going to shut down the Dick Henderson Bridge. that connects
• 12:45
  Speaker 2: Nitro to St.
• 12:47
  Speaker 6: Albans.
• 12:47
Speaker 2: They'll shut down the bridge about 9, well, about 8.30,
• 12:50
Speaker 2: I guess, and then everybody will gather on the bridge,
• 12:52
Speaker 2: a couple thousand people. And it is really, really cool
• 12:56
Speaker 2: to see because you get everybody hanging out on the
• 12:59
Speaker 2: bridge there, and they're shooting the fireworks off of the
• 13:01
Speaker 2: boat ramp there. And with the river and everything, Brian
• 13:05
Speaker 2: Hughes says the weather's going to be great. Make plans
• 13:07
Speaker 2: to be there. Also make plans to get your Chinese
• 13:10
Speaker 2: food needs taken care.
• 13:12
Speaker 6: Of ahead of time. All right. Thank you, David. Thank
• 13:16
  Speaker 6: you very much.
• 13:17
Speaker 2: All right. Joe Stevens, appreciate it, man. We'll talk to
• 13:19
Speaker 2: you next week about Boomtown Days.
• 13:20
  Speaker 1: How's that?
• 13:21
  Speaker 6: See you, buddy.
• 13:22
Speaker 2: All right. Joe Stevens from the city of Nitro. And, again,
• 13:26
Speaker 2: everything happening Sunday nights prior to Labor Day. About 830
• 13:30
Speaker 2: or so, they'll shut down the bridge there that links
• 13:32
Speaker 2: the communities of Nitro and St. Albans to Dick Henderson Bridge.
• 13:36
Speaker 2: So plan accordingly if you are ordering Chinese food or
• 13:40
Speaker 2: any other foods online. Just plan accordingly. About 830, they're
• 13:43
Speaker 2: going to shut it down. About 1030, it'll open back up.
• 13:47
Speaker 2: And the two communities or anybody that wants to come
• 13:49
Speaker 2: out and check out some fireworks to celebrate the Labor Day,
• 13:51
Speaker 2: the Labor Day holiday Sunday night on the Dick Henderson Bridge,
• 13:55
Speaker 2: which the bridge will be shut down to vehicular traffic.
• 13:58
Speaker 2: And a couple thousand people show up for this thing.
• 14:01
Speaker 2: So you. Should be one of them. But Dave Allen's
• 14:04
Speaker 2: show on 580 Live brought to you by Charleston Dirty Birds.
• 14:06
Speaker 2: Birds continue on the road all this week in Lexington.
• 14:11
Speaker 2: Then they go to High Point after that. They'll return
• 14:13
Speaker 2: home to Go-Mart Ballpark on September 11th. Check out DirtyBirdsBaseball.com.
• 14:17
Speaker 2: And on the midday show yesterday, I had Jay Silverman
• 14:20
Speaker 2: from the Dirty Birds on, and I got him out of,
• 14:24
Speaker 2: you know, trying to put out about 3 million lights
• 14:28
Speaker 2: over there because they're already getting ready for the Solango
• 14:31
Speaker 2: Law light the night. And when you put that many
• 14:34
Speaker 2: lights out, You can imagine it takes a little time
• 14:36
Speaker 2: to do that. So anyway, we'll be giving you more
• 14:38
Speaker 2: information about that once the season comes to an end.
• 14:41
  Speaker 1: It is 922.
• 14:42
Speaker 2: Ryan Nicholson is our producer today. Guarantee Bank Hotline 304-345-5858.
• 14:46
Speaker 2: Tony Vitale, text 304-935-500. We'll take a break. When we
• 14:52
Speaker 2: come back, the new county commissioner in Kanawha County. He'll
• 14:55
Speaker 2: be sworn in later today. Austin Gessel will join us

Speaker 2: After a lot of back and forth, it looks like
• 17:19
Speaker 2: we will have a new Kanawha County Commissioner to replace
• 17:22
Speaker 2: Lance Wheeler, who resigned to take over the Kanawha County
• 17:25
Speaker 2: Emergency Ambulance Service. His name is Austin Gessel, and he's
• 17:28
Speaker 2: going to be sworn in at noon today, and he
• 17:30
Speaker 2: joins us this morning in the General Construction Studios. Good morning, sir.
• 17:32
Speaker 2: Welcome to the show, and congratulations.
• 17:34
Speaker 3: Thank you. Thank you, Dave.
• 17:35
Speaker 12: Thank you for having me, and I will say real quick,
• 17:37
Speaker 12: I was going to give you some cane about being
• 17:38
Speaker 12: a Cowboys fan, but I guess one of my commissioners
• 17:41
Speaker 12: around me are also a Cowboys fan, Ben Salenga. So
• 17:43
Speaker 12: I have to be careful now and not give you
• 17:44
Speaker 12: a little too much cane.
• 17:46
Speaker 2: We appreciate that. Now, you're going to be sworn in
• 17:48
Speaker 2: later today. Noon, is that when it is? You're going
• 17:50
Speaker 2: to be sworn in. And I understand that you are
• 17:52
Speaker 2: going to be the youngest county commissioner in the history
• 17:55
  Speaker 2: of the county.
• 17:56
  Speaker 1: Is that right?
• 17:56
  Speaker 6: Yes, yes.
• 17:57
Speaker 12: And actually, there's a conversation trying to see if I'm
• 17:59
Speaker 12: possibly the youngest county commissioner in the state right now.
• 18:01
Speaker 2: And how old are you?
• 18:02
Speaker 12: I'm 27 years old. I'm honored to be in this position.
• 18:05
Speaker 12: I'm happy the executive committee approved. put me in this
• 18:07
Speaker 12: opportunity as well, too. And I'm eager to work for
• 18:10
Speaker 12: Kanawha County. A lot to learn, short endeavor, but man,
• 18:13
Speaker 12: I'm ready for this and I'm ready to support Kanawha County.
• 18:15
Speaker 2: So how are you feeling about this whole thing? Because
• 18:18
Speaker 2: we're going to get into the story. It's kind of
• 18:19
Speaker 2: been an up and down type thing, but today it
• 18:21
Speaker 2: all becomes real, I guess, at 12 o'clock. And if
• 18:23
  Speaker 2: you're sworn in at 12, 1201, you're officially a county
• 18:26
Speaker 2: commissioner and your phone's going to start ringing. You know that, right?
• 18:28
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 18:29
Speaker 2: People, you know, talking about something or another. But how
• 18:32
Speaker 2: are you feeling about the whole thing?
• 18:33
Speaker 3: Well, my phone call, that's not a bad thing. I
• 18:35
Speaker 3: want people to trust me.
• 18:36
Speaker 12: You know, a lot of people bring up the point
• 18:38
Speaker 12: of my age, saying, age, you know, what's this? But
• 18:41
Speaker 12: just let them know I have a lot of experience
• 18:43
Speaker 12: I bring to the table. Like what Commissioner Salengo said
• 18:45
Speaker 12: the other day, I bring a new perspective, new perspective
• 18:48
Speaker 12: of a generation that sometimes may think their voice isn't heard.
• 18:50
Speaker 12: And so I'm honored to represent And also, you know,
• 18:53
Speaker 12: I'm the only Republican on the commission, too. I think
• 18:55
  Speaker 12: that's important that if I did, let's say, wasn't a
• 18:58
Speaker 12: part of this and let's say, you know, I did
• 18:59
Speaker 12: step down or something. Republicans wouldn't have an opportunity to
• 19:02
Speaker 12: have a representative until probably the general election. So I'm
• 19:05
Speaker 12: happy to represent the Republicans. I'm happy to represent Kanawha County.
• 19:08
Speaker 12: And ultimately, too, now, since we have a third commissioner,
• 19:12
Speaker 12: we will have a quorum if something, God forbid, if
• 19:14
Speaker 12: something happens to Ben Slinger or Natalie Tennant. And then
• 19:16
Speaker 12: that means ultimately Kanawha County business goes to a halt
• 19:19
Speaker 12: if something happens. So I'm honored to kind of keep
• 19:22
  Speaker 12: the boat afloat.
• 19:23
Speaker 2: So for those who don't know you, give us the
• 19:24
Speaker 2: bio on Austin Guest.
• 19:26
  Speaker 6: Sure.
• 19:26
Speaker 12: Graduated St. Albans 2017. Graduated Washington State University. Crossed the
• 19:30
Speaker 12: river 2021. Got married in Berry Hills Country Club 22.
• 19:34
Speaker 12: Bought a house in 24. What that means is I'm
• 19:36
Speaker 12: a Kanawha County native.
• 19:38
Speaker 2: Home, born and raised.
• 19:39
Speaker 12: I love Kanawha County. Ultimately, the reason why I even
• 19:41
Speaker 12: got into Kanawha helping the community and supporting communities because
• 19:45
Speaker 12: of what Kanawha County has done for me.
• 19:46
Speaker 3: I love St. Albans. I love Nitro, Crosslanes.
• 19:50
Speaker 12: I love everywhere. And they're all good people here. I'm
• 19:53
Speaker 12: beyond excited to kind of represent them. And for five months,
• 19:57
Speaker 12: short endeavor, but we're going to make the five months
• 19:59
  Speaker 12: very fruitful.
• 19:59
Speaker 2: So I had Austin Gassel again, who will be sworn
• 20:01
Speaker 2: in later today as the new Kanawha County Commissioner of
• 20:04
Speaker 2: a Dave Allen Show and 580 Live brought to you
• 20:06
Speaker 2: in part by Pinnacle Consultants. When environmental questions come up
• 20:08
Speaker 2: at a building, Pinnacle is Provides clear answers specializing in asbestos, lead, mold,
• 20:12
Speaker 2: and indoor air quality issues with accredited lab testing based

• 20:18
Speaker 2: helping you understand your environment because what you don't know
• 20:21
Speaker 2: can't hurt you. So now your name was one of three, Austin,
• 20:23
Speaker 2: that was submitted to the commission to replace Lance Wheeler. you,
• 20:28
Speaker 2: Edward Burgess, and Jared Page. Now, Jared is the Republican
• 20:32
Speaker 2: nominee for the job, having won in the primary. He'll
• 20:35
Speaker 2: now move on to the general. He does have opposition.
• 20:37
Speaker 2: And about an hour before the commission meeting last week,
• 20:40
Speaker 2: both you and Mr. Burgess sent letters to Commission President
• 20:43
Speaker 2: Ben Salango and Commissioner Natalie Tennant saying that you would
• 20:46
Speaker 2: not serve if they chose you. Now, I'm asking you
• 20:48
Speaker 2: to speak for you, not for the other gentleman. Why
• 20:51
Speaker 2: did you do that, and then why did you change
• 20:53
  Speaker 2: your mind?
• 20:53
Speaker 12: So, first of all, Jared did win the election in April,
• 20:56
Speaker 12: and us Republicans voted him to represent us. And so
• 21:00
Speaker 12: when the seat was vacant, we made an election in April.
• 21:03
Speaker 12: So we said he earned that ability to represent us. Now, unfortunately,
• 21:07
Speaker 12: he didn't win and that's okay. But I'm excited for
• 21:11
Speaker 12: it to give him the keys. And January 1st, he's
• 21:13
Speaker 12: going to be a fantastic commissioner for Kanawha County. The
• 21:16
Speaker 12: times I've spoken to him the past couple of days,
• 21:18
Speaker 12: it's impressive and I'm excited. But I was prepared to
• 21:21
Speaker 12: step down day one. Thankfully, a great conversation with Jared Page.
• 21:25
Speaker 12: He was actually the first person to call me and go, hey,
• 21:28
Speaker 12: thank you for your support. Thank you that you're there
• 21:30
Speaker 12: for me, but put politics to the side. I know
• 21:33
Speaker 12: you wanted me to be picked. Kanawha County needs you.
• 21:35
Speaker 12: Because again, remember about a year and a half ago,
• 21:37
Speaker 12: what we saw in Berkeley County, when they had that
• 21:39
Speaker 12: commission issue, payroll wasn't paid and they lost a lot
• 21:43
Speaker 12: of grant money. That was disastrous for Berkeley County. And
• 21:46
Speaker 12: he was like, there is a possibility if you step
• 21:48
Speaker 12: down and God forbid something happened to Salenga or Tenant,
• 21:51
Speaker 12: we no longer have a quorum. And remember, there's 12
• 21:54
Speaker 12: divisions under the commission and there's 400 workers under. So
• 21:58
Speaker 12: The county just goes to complete dead halt. So he said,
• 22:00
Speaker 12: serve these four or five months. Kanawha County needs it.
• 22:03
Speaker 12: Put politics to the side. And I appreciate it. Ben
• 22:05
Speaker 12: Selingo also called me. We had a wonderful conversation. He
• 22:08
Speaker 12: also said the same thing, basically, like, Austin, we need
• 22:11
Speaker 12: a quorum. And there is a chance something happened like
• 22:14
Speaker 12: Berkeley County would happen here as well. So after I
• 22:17
Speaker 12: was kind of painted the picture. Understood the process. I
• 22:20
Speaker 12: was more than happy to serve.
• 22:21
Speaker 2: So now you will, as you mentioned earlier, you'll be
• 22:23
Speaker 2: the only Republican on the county commission. Both Ben Salingo
• 22:26
Speaker 2: and Natalie Tennant are Democrats. How do you feel about that?
• 22:29
Speaker 12: Well, of course, that means I have to work bipartisanly.
• 22:31
Speaker 12: I think that's fine for Kanawha County. A lot of
• 22:34
Speaker 12: stuff to learn. I believe that supporting an economy is bipartisan,
• 22:39
Speaker 12: supporting a county. And there's a lot of great projects happening.
• 22:42
Speaker 12: For example, Shawnee Sports Complex are adding, I think, four
• 22:44
  Speaker 12: new soccer fields.
• 22:45
Speaker 3: That's awesome. new gun range.
• 22:47
Speaker 12: And I don't think the gun range is going to
• 22:49
  Speaker 12: ask who's the Republican, who's the Democrat. I don't think
• 22:51
Speaker 12: the soccer field is going to ask who's Republican, who's Democrat.
• 22:53
Speaker 12: So I'm ready and equal to work for bipartisan Kanawha County.
• 22:56
Speaker 2: Now, you're going to be completing the term of Lance Wheeler, who,
• 23:00
Speaker 2: as we said, resigned to become the new head of
• 23:02
Speaker 2: the Ambulance Service Authority here in Kanawha County. Talk about
• 23:05
Speaker 2: taking over for Lance Wheeler. Talk about, you know.
• 23:07
Speaker 3: Well, it's an honor. Lance was a fantastic.
• 23:09
  Speaker 2: Big shoes.
• 23:10
  Speaker 3: Very big shoes.
• 23:11
Speaker 12: Lance was a fantastic commissioner, did a lot of good
• 23:14
  Speaker 12: for Kanawha County.
• 23:14
Speaker 3: And I'm very eager to see him as a senator. Um,
• 23:18
Speaker 3: Lance taught me a lot.
• 23:19
Speaker 12: Uh, now we haven't had a ton of conversations, but
• 23:22
Speaker 12: we we've called a little bit in the past week
• 23:23
Speaker 12: or two and just to talk, especially, especially after what
• 23:27
Speaker 12: happened and stuff. And he was actually one of the
• 23:29
Speaker 12: other people that called me and said, Austin, listen, you
• 23:31
Speaker 12: need to definitely put Kanawha County first right now. I
• 23:34
Speaker 12: had about probably when I, between the hours of last week, Thursday,
• 23:38
Speaker 12: 4 PM and 10 PM, 150 phone calls.
• 23:40
  Speaker 3: I'm not lying.
• 23:41
Speaker 12: Um, which honor, I mean, people, you know, people trust
• 23:46
Speaker 12: me and talk to me and stuff, but it was
• 23:48
Speaker 12: a responsibility. And I do have heavy shoes to fill
• 23:51
Speaker 12: for Lance. And I'm eager to try to fill those
• 23:53
Speaker 12: shoes for five months.
• 23:54
Speaker 3: And we'll go from there.
• 23:56
Speaker 2: Now, as a county commissioner, As you mentioned, you're only
• 23:59
Speaker 2: going to be serving for a couple of months. You
• 24:01
Speaker 2: talked about the projects that are going on. What do
• 24:03
Speaker 2: you hope to accomplish in your time on the commission?
• 24:06
Speaker 12: Well, let me get my feet wet first. I don't
• 24:08
Speaker 12: want to make any promises because, again, my endeavor is short.
• 24:11
Speaker 12: But all I promise is Kanawha County's objective is, number one,
• 24:14
Speaker 12: to make sure the county kind of keeps going. County
• 24:16
Speaker 12: operations keep going. Payroll happens. That's the big, big thing
• 24:19
Speaker 12: commissioners need to do. Now, there's other projects happening and
• 24:22
Speaker 12: such that I haven't been briefed on yet. But we're
• 24:25
Speaker 12: going to look into those. We're going to do everything
• 24:26
Speaker 12: we can. And these next five months, we're going to
• 24:28
Speaker 12: do some great things.
• 24:29
Speaker 2: Plus, Kanawha County is still cleaning up after those devastating floods.
• 24:33
  Speaker 8: There is.
• 24:33
Speaker 2: We have areas like Campbell's Creek and places like that.
• 24:35
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 24:36
Speaker 12: September 4th, I think, is the last day we're doing
• 24:37
Speaker 12: the flood cleanup. So make sure if you guys have
• 24:40
Speaker 12: any flood damage to put it on the side and
• 24:42
Speaker 12: then we'll come and clean it up for you all.
• 24:43
Speaker 2: And again, it does, as we've talked before with Commissioner
• 24:47
Speaker 2: Solango and others, it does have to be placed to
• 24:49
Speaker 2: the curb. They are not allowed to come onto private
• 24:51
Speaker 2: property to do that.
• 24:53
  Speaker 1: Yes, yes.
• 24:53
  Speaker 6: So.
• 24:54
Speaker 2: I'm going to ask you, do you have political aspirations
• 24:57
Speaker 2: in the future after you wrap up your time in
• 25:00
Speaker 2: the commissioner? Have you thought about that? I mean, I
• 25:02
Speaker 2: know you've been around politics for some time. You're going
• 25:07
Speaker 2: to finish out this term, okay? What's the future look
• 25:11
  Speaker 2: like after that?
• 25:12
  Speaker 3: Well– I will.
• 25:15
Speaker 12: I'll just tell you now, after my endeavor in January,
• 25:18
Speaker 12: I would love, love, love if I can have a
• 25:20
Speaker 12: chance to being in a councilman at St.
• 25:22
  Speaker 5: Albans.
• 25:23
Speaker 12: That would be first priority is being a councilman, maybe
• 25:26
Speaker 12: council at large. We'll see maybe way down the road.
• 25:29
Speaker 12: We can maybe have a better conversation about house or
• 25:31
Speaker 12: house or something in the future. But right now, after
• 25:34
Speaker 12: my endeavor, the objective probably is for St. Albans City
• 25:37
Speaker 12: Council for a term and two. And we'll see what
• 25:39
Speaker 12: happens goes on from there.
• 25:40
  Speaker 1: But yes.
• 25:41
Speaker 2: I just I'm kind of curious about that, because you
• 25:43
Speaker 2: said you are a relatively young guy, youngest county. You'll
• 25:46
Speaker 2: be the youngest county commissioner in definitely Kanawha County, maybe
• 25:49
Speaker 2: the whole state. They're going to try to look in
• 25:52
Speaker 2: to that. And you're a bright young man. And I
• 25:53
Speaker 2: know that you've got a very bright future ahead of you.
• 25:58
Speaker 2: So no matter what that is, I'm sure you'll do it.
• 26:00
  Speaker 2: I'm sure you'll do a great job.
• 26:03
  Speaker 6: Thank you.
• 26:04
Speaker 2: I understand that you are flipping a coin for a
• 26:07
Speaker 2: big high school football.
• 26:08
  Speaker 5: Game, right?
• 26:08
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 26:08
Speaker 12: So actually, it's going to be me and Ben Salengo
• 26:11
Speaker 12: are going to the St. Albans Nitro Game Friday and
• 26:13
Speaker 12: are doing the coin flip. So I guess they're going
• 26:14
Speaker 12: to say, you know, Commissioner Austin Gessel, Commissioner Ben Salengo,
• 26:17
Speaker 12: and we'll be out there for the coin flip. I'll
• 26:19
Speaker 12: probably be on the sidelines with St. Albans and cheering
• 26:22
Speaker 12: the Red Dragons on. Vince Lago might be on the
• 26:24
Speaker 12: Nitro side cheering for the Wildcats. So we'll give each
• 26:27
Speaker 12: other some cane, whoever wins or loses.
• 26:29
Speaker 2: Well, look, I mean, Solango's team got it handed to them. No,
• 26:32
Speaker 2: I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding about that. No, wait
• 26:35
Speaker 2: a minute. No, I was talking about the St. Albans
• 26:37
  Speaker 2: game last week.
• 26:37
  Speaker 10: St.
• 26:37
Speaker 2: Albans played Shady, right? Oh, yeah, that's right.
• 26:39
  Speaker 6: Shady.
• 26:40
  Speaker 2: Shady won, right?
• 26:41
  Speaker 3: Shady won.
• 26:43
  Speaker 2: That's Salango's team. I'm sorry. I got that backwards.
• 26:45
  Speaker 6: Oh, no.
• 26:46
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 26:46
  Speaker 3: Well, never mind.
• 26:47
Speaker 2: I won't be saying anything to him. Well, he's an
• 26:49
Speaker 2: alma mater. That's his alma mater.
• 26:51
  Speaker 1: Hey, St.
• 26:51
Speaker 3: Albans actually played pretty good. We got a couple touchdowns.
• 26:53
  Speaker 6: St.
• 26:53
Speaker 12: Albans actually looks reasonably a pretty well team. I think
• 26:56
Speaker 12: the coach is a great coach and get a couple
• 26:58
Speaker 12: wins this year and build some momentum.
• 26:59
Speaker 2: Well, I'm just glad that they have a team this
• 27:01
Speaker 2: year because I interviewed him a month or two ago.
• 27:04
Speaker 2: there was a very real possibility that St. Albans High
• 27:07
Speaker 2: School was not going to have a football team because
• 27:08
Speaker 2: they didn't have the numbers out.
• 27:09
Speaker 12: I think they ended up having about, what, 31, 32 players,
• 27:12
Speaker 12: if I'm correct. So they have a team and a
• 27:14
Speaker 12: little more. So let's see if they can bear some
• 27:16
  Speaker 12: fruit this season.
• 27:17
  Speaker 8: All right.
• 27:18
Speaker 2: But, yeah, you are going to be flipping the coin,
• 27:20
Speaker 2: I understand, for the Battle of the Bridge.
• 27:21
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I am. It's either going to be
• 27:23
  Speaker 3: me or Ben.
• 27:23
  Speaker 8: Okay.
• 27:24
Speaker 2: Well, you'll be there for it.
• 27:25
Speaker 12: Yeah, if it's me, I'm going to have to practice
• 27:27
  Speaker 12: flipping a coin because I know for a fact I
• 27:29
Speaker 12: would probably mess it up.
• 27:30
Speaker 3: So I definitely need to prepare a little bit.
• 27:32
Speaker 2: I think you got this.
• 27:34
  Speaker 9: All right.
• 27:34
Speaker 2: So I'm going to give you the last couple of minutes, Austin,
• 27:36
Speaker 2: just to thank anyone you wish.
• 27:39
  Speaker 1: It's your time.
• 27:41
Speaker 2: When we do interviews for political campaigns, I always call
• 27:43
Speaker 2: it the last 30, the final 30, but I'm not
• 27:46
Speaker 2: going to time you. But I'll just give you the
• 27:47
Speaker 2: opportunity to thank whoever you want for this appointment.
• 27:49
Speaker 12: Well, first off, I want to thank the commission team.
• 27:51
  Speaker 12: That's important. I come in and I don't have to
• 27:54
Speaker 12: earn respect. They come in, they say, hello, commissioner. And
• 27:57
Speaker 12: they guide me, they advise me, the team around the commission.
• 28:01
  Speaker 12: Like I said, there's 12 divisions, 400 people. that there
• 28:04
  Speaker 12: is everything's dotted to an i across to a t
• 28:07
Speaker 12: and it's impressive and now that i'm in that system
• 28:10
Speaker 12: a little bit they're patient they want to explain things
• 28:12
Speaker 12: there's a standard that commissioner's office wants to put up
• 28:15
Speaker 12: and they're trying to help me get to that standard
• 28:17
Speaker 12: i'm very eager and excited i want to thank a
• 28:19
Speaker 12: lot of friends and family and stuff too that's been
• 28:21
Speaker 12: very supportive a lot of you know my wife my
• 28:24
Speaker 12: wife is man this has been a change for her
• 28:26
Speaker 12: this past week you know she calls me and goes
• 28:28
Speaker 12: wow you're all over the news now and that's that
• 28:30
Speaker 12: was a change for her and I hope she's listening
• 28:32
Speaker 12: right now. She's a very introverted woman. But it's just
• 28:35
Speaker 12: a lot of good support around me.
• 28:36
  Speaker 2: I'm grateful.
• 28:37
Speaker 12: And honestly, with how much support I have, I feel
• 28:40
Speaker 12: like I owe it to Kanawha County to do everything
• 28:42
Speaker 12: I can these next five months.
• 28:43
  Speaker 3: So I'm eager.
• 28:43
Speaker 2: Well, we wish you the best of luck. And I
• 28:45
Speaker 2: have an open-door policy with all three county commissioners going
• 28:48
Speaker 2: back to Wheeler and, of course, Commissioner Salango and Commissioner Tennant.
• 28:52
Speaker 2: They're always welcome on the show. And as I always said,
• 28:54
Speaker 2: don't always wait on me to reach out to you.
• 28:57
Speaker 2: If you've got something that's going on, you reach out
• 28:58
Speaker 2: to me because I like to have you on. And
• 29:00
Speaker 2: I'd like to have you, you know, the commissioners on
• 29:02
Speaker 2: to kind of, you know, talk to people. And I'm
• 29:04
Speaker 2: not going to put you on the spot today, but
• 29:06
Speaker 2: once you are sworn in, have you come in, take
• 29:09
Speaker 2: some phone calls, take some texts and things of that nature.
• 29:11
Speaker 2: So 12 o'clock today. That's what it is at the courthouse.
• 29:14
Speaker 12: Yep, at the courthouse in the special courtroom, if I'm correct.
• 29:17
  Speaker 12: And it's on.
• 29:18
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 29:19
Speaker 12: But hopefully it's open to the public. So if anyone
• 29:21
Speaker 12: wants to come and stuff, they have to go to
• 29:22
Speaker 12: security and stuff. It'll be a good time.
• 29:24
Speaker 2: Well, congratulations again, sir.
• 29:26
  Speaker 3: Thank you, Dave.
• 29:27
Speaker 2: Effective 1201 or 1205, however long it takes, he will
• 29:31
Speaker 2: be the new Kanawha County Commissioner. It's Austin Gessle. Appreciate

• 32:37
Speaker 2: Texas, never underestimate the power of some good Chinese foods. Bridges,
• 32:42
  Speaker 2: be darned. That's a texter.
• 32:45
  Speaker 6: All right.
• 32:45
Speaker 2: So, you know, every now and then we'll have like
• 32:47
Speaker 2: one moment from a broadcast day, either on this show
• 32:51
Speaker 2: or on Metro News Midday, that just kind of sticks
• 32:53
Speaker 2: out as the moment of the day. This one has
• 32:54
Speaker 2: got to be it. I was talking to Joe Stevens,
• 32:55
Speaker 2: in case you missed it. Joe Stevens, City of Nitro,
• 32:58
Speaker 2: earlier in the show, and he was talking about this
• 33:00
Speaker 2: is the fourth year that for the Sunday before Labor Day,
• 33:04
Speaker 2: Sunday night, they shut down the Dick Henderson Bridge there
• 33:08
Speaker 2: that connects Nitro and St.
• 33:09
  Speaker 5: Albans.
• 33:09
Speaker 2: So people can come together, a couple thousand people, be
• 33:12
Speaker 2: out on the bridge to watch the fireworks. And he
• 33:15
Speaker 2: said that in the first couple of years. Somebody complained
• 33:18
Speaker 2: because they couldn't get to their Chinese food, you know,
• 33:20
Speaker 2: that they had ordered. And so, yeah, you're right. Never
• 33:24
Speaker 2: underestimate the power of some good Chinese food. Bridges be darned.
• 33:27
Speaker 2: I enjoy it. I will say this. I would probably,
• 33:32
Speaker 2: you know, kill a guy for some crab ring again.
• 33:34
  Speaker 6: Not literally.
• 33:36
Speaker 2: Not literally. I'm just saying it's good crab rangoon. Yeah,
• 33:39
Speaker 2: I mean, it sounds good right now, but everything sounds
• 33:42
Speaker 2: good because I'm hungry and I'm always hungry. Texas, Dave,
• 33:45
Speaker 2: have you seen the Trump administration trying to get out
• 33:47
Speaker 2: of paying death benefits to the soldiers who have died
• 33:50
Speaker 2: in the Iran war? Yeah, they're trying to reclassify a
• 33:52
Speaker 2: few soldiers deaths to say they weren't due to the
• 33:55
Speaker 2: Iran war. So just a friendly reminder to everyone listening,
• 33:58
Speaker 2: especially those in the military. You're on the decoy plane,
• 34:01
Speaker 2: says a texter. Let me see here. How can we
• 34:10
Speaker 2: expand the county commission? There is a ridiculously small number,
• 34:14
Speaker 2: and he points out what happens if two are absent.
• 34:16
Speaker 2: Five to seven would be better. Well, I mean, that
• 34:20
Speaker 2: would require the county to make that decision. You know,
• 34:25
Speaker 2: Kanawha is the largest county in the state, and we
• 34:27
Speaker 2: have three. There are other counties that have more, as
• 34:30
Speaker 2: texture said, five to seven. You know, I don't know.
• 34:33
Speaker 2: I mean, it would have to be they would have
• 34:34
Speaker 2: to take the pulse of the voters, I think, just
• 34:36
Speaker 2: to see how they.
• 34:38
  Speaker 14: Feel about it.
• 34:40
  Speaker 4: I don't know.
• 34:41
Speaker 2: I mean, I think in my opinion, you know, it
• 34:43
Speaker 2: seems to work pretty well. But it is a good
• 34:45
Speaker 2: point that that if we only have two commissioners and
• 34:51
Speaker 2: not a lot, you know, can get done. And so
• 34:53
Speaker 2: I'm glad that we have. The commissioner in place now,
• 34:56
Speaker 2: Austin Gessel, will be sworn in later today. I don't know.
• 35:00
Speaker 2: That's for something for somebody else much smarter than I
• 35:04
Speaker 2: to come up with. The West Virginia Chamber of Commerce
• 35:07
Speaker 2: Business Summit continues today at the Greenbrier. Now, word is
• 35:11
Speaker 2: there will be some sort of major announcement coming from
• 35:14
Speaker 2: there today. Now, people have speculated a huge data center
• 35:18
Speaker 2: is some sort of a major jobs announcement, maybe a
• 35:22
Speaker 2: major construction project. I'm kind of leaning that way. I mean,
• 35:27
Speaker 2: not saying that a new data center won't be announced,
• 35:29
Speaker 2: but sources there on the ground tell me that, and
• 35:34
Speaker 2: maybe I'm wrong, that there's going to be an announcement.
• 35:36
Speaker 2: And I'm told around 1115, 1130 or so today is
• 35:40
Speaker 2: when it's going to happen. Of course, they'll have it
• 35:41
Speaker 2: for you on talk line. I am going to I'm
• 35:44
Speaker 2: going to go with some of my sources that are
• 35:46
Speaker 2: telling me that there's going to be a major construction
• 35:48
Speaker 2: announcement today. I'll let Wilson and Meadows handle that for
• 35:51
Speaker 2: you during their visit with you coming up at 10.06
• 35:55
Speaker 2: from there. But anyway, Meadows and Wilson will be live
• 35:58
Speaker 2: from TalkLine or with TalkLine from the Greenbrier coming up
• 36:01
Speaker 2: at 10.06. Expected to hear from U.S. Senators Shelley Moore
• 36:04
Speaker 2: Capito and Jim Justice, as well as Marshall President Brad Smith.
• 36:08
Speaker 2: Conrad Bastin of Antero. And there is a small business
• 36:12
Speaker 2: panel that is coming up today as well as part
• 36:15
Speaker 2: of all the fun there. And again, Wilson Meadows are
• 36:18
Speaker 2: live there starting at 10.06. And at least one of them,
• 36:22
Speaker 2: if maybe both, will join me on midday. Amanda and
• 36:26
Speaker 2: I coming up at 12.24 today. to discuss that. But
• 36:30
Speaker 2: Dave Allen's show on 580 Live is brought to you
• 36:32
Speaker 2: in part by Morgan & Morgan. With more than $ 20
• 36:34
Speaker 2: billion recovered, they believe that when you're injured, you deserve more.
• 36:37
Speaker 2: Morgan & Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. Let me see.
• 36:42
Speaker 2: Got some more text. Page put these guys up to
• 36:46
Speaker 2: doing what they'd done. It's dirty politics. Simple. Well, I mean,
• 36:51
Speaker 2: you got to have some sort of proof of that.
• 36:53
Speaker 2: I mean, I do know that Jared Page was one
• 36:55
Speaker 2: of the folks that called Austin Gessel and congratulated him.
• 37:00
Speaker 2: I do know that, but I don't know what goes
• 37:03
Speaker 2: on behind the scenes. I'm not an insider or whatever,
• 37:05
Speaker 2: but I had Jared Page on the show last Friday,
• 37:08
Speaker 2: and if Mr. Page wants back on, I haven't heard
• 37:10
Speaker 2: from Commissioner Natalie Tennant during all this. I know she's
• 37:12
Speaker 2: been traveling a little bit, I think. I talked to
• 37:14
Speaker 2: her last week, so I'll be glad to have her
• 37:16
Speaker 2: on the show tomorrow. I'm just glad, again, I am
• 37:19
Speaker 2: just glad that we got it taken care of officially
• 37:24
Speaker 2: come 12 noon or so today. We will swear in
• 37:27
Speaker 2: a new county commissioner. That part of it does make
• 37:30
Speaker 2: me happy. Text Dave, our military is in the worst
• 37:34
Speaker 2: shape it's ever been in, getting worse every day. Other
• 37:37
Speaker 2: countries no longer see us as a superpower.
• 37:40
  Speaker 1: We were.
• 37:40
Speaker 2: What in the world is going on? Well, to get
• 37:43
Speaker 2: some context there, I would need to know more about that. Text,
• 37:47
Speaker 2: just wanted to let people know Canada is West Virginia's
• 37:50
Speaker 2: number one trading partner. They have a lot of energy
• 37:52
Speaker 2: investments in their state. Now Trump is trying to Destroy that,
• 37:56
Speaker 2: according to a texter. Good show, Dave. Just some positive
• 38:03
Speaker 2: feedback would be good, says the texter. Okay. I mean,
• 38:08
Speaker 2: I guess it's positive feedback toward me, I guess. That's weird.
• 38:13
Speaker 2: I appreciate it, though. Like, I have done this show,
• 38:17
Speaker 2: you know, for six years and a few months, and
• 38:20
Speaker 2: I enjoy this. I do enjoy being in it. It's
• 38:23
  Speaker 2: not a real job. I mean, it's really not. I
• 38:25
Speaker 2: have fun. Text, one request.
• 38:31
  Speaker 10: For Mr.
• 38:32
Speaker 2: Gessel. Please do not allow certain politicians to attempt to
• 38:36
Speaker 2: strong arm or intimidate you into giving in to them,
• 38:39
Speaker 2: according to a texter. Text, expand the commission question mark.
• 38:43
Speaker 2: Name one section of government at any level that has
• 38:46
Speaker 2: ever gotten better by getting bigger.
• 38:49
  Speaker 1: Think, people.
• 38:51
Speaker 2: Later today at noon, Metro News Midday, powered by Salango Law,
• 38:54
Speaker 2: 13 News, and tonight live anchor Amanda Barron and me. Again,
• 38:57
Speaker 2: we'll check in with the Greenbrier with what's going on
• 39:00
Speaker 2: with the Business Summit. Major announcement scheduled around 11.15 or 11.30
• 39:04
Speaker 2: or so. By the time we go on the air,
• 39:05
Speaker 2: we'll know what that announcement is. So we'll talk about it.
• 39:08
Speaker 2: Our friends from the West Virginia Lottery are going to
• 39:10
Speaker 2: stop by. Plus, Jay Phillips from Seed Sower is here.
• 39:12
Speaker 2: Jeff Jenkins with the news. And, of course, Open Line
• 39:14
Speaker 2: West Virginia. Metro News Midday with 13 News. And tonight,
• 39:17
Speaker 2: live anchor Amanda Barron and me coming up at noon today,
• 39:20
Speaker 2: powered by Selene Goldall. Now, on this show tomorrow, it
• 39:23
Speaker 2: is Friday, which means we get a visit from Angie
• 39:24
Speaker 2: Gillenwater from the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association with this week's Adopt Me,
• 39:28
Speaker 2: Please Pet of the Week. Be interested. to see, get
• 39:31
Speaker 2: her take on how everything with kegs for canines went.
• 39:33
Speaker 2: We had that event this past Saturday at the red carpet,
• 39:37
Speaker 2: so got to get a feel on that from Angie. Also,
• 39:40
Speaker 2: we told you yesterday on the show that Tony Hazlett
• 39:42
Speaker 2: has announced his retirement from the Charleston Police Department. That
• 39:46
Speaker 2: retirement is effective tomorrow. He will join us on the
• 39:48
Speaker 2: show tomorrow. And Tony the tailor is going to stop
• 39:51
Speaker 2: by the show tomorrow as well. It's always entertaining when Mr.
• 39:55
Speaker 2: Perenzino is here. That is all coming up on tomorrow's show.
• 39:58
Speaker 2: Hoppy has a new commentary. And you can read it
• 40:02
Speaker 2: at WVMetroNews.com. And he's also going to drop a new
• 40:05
Speaker 2: State of Minds tonight as well. Now, we'd hoped to
• 40:08
Speaker 2: have Hoppy on Midday today, but they will be recording
• 40:12
Speaker 2: a new Three Guys today, so he is unavailable for
• 40:15
Speaker 2: the show. I was texting with Hoppy earlier. I said,
• 40:16
Speaker 2: it's amazing how you old retired guys lose all— You know,
• 40:21
Speaker 2: lose all reality when it comes to time and days,
• 40:24
Speaker 2: because I text him yesterday, said, hey, we want to
• 40:26
Speaker 2: have you on a show. He said, no problem. And
• 40:27
Speaker 2: then this morning he sends me a text that says, oops, forgot.
• 40:31
Speaker 2: And I just had to mess with him a little bit, man,
• 40:33
Speaker 2: and just say, Hoppy, you old guys, you old retired guys, man,
• 40:36
Speaker 2: you you don't know what day it is, you know
• 40:39
Speaker 2: what time it is or anything like that. But so anyway,
• 40:42
Speaker 2: I don't want to tell you about this state of mind.
• 40:44
Speaker 2: So it is a feature on a native of Kingwood.
• 40:48
Speaker 2: in Preston County, who was a major player in the
• 40:51
Speaker 2: world of business. And when I say a major player,
• 40:54
Speaker 2: not just in West Virginia, literally all across the world,
• 40:57
Speaker 2: went to Harvard Business School, came out of the coal
• 41:00
Speaker 2: industry initially, but then went on to do a lot
• 41:03
Speaker 2: of other things. His name was John Boyle. And despite
• 41:06
Speaker 2: his major business success, he was in danger of losing
• 41:10
Speaker 2: everything due to addiction issues. Now, I am familiar with Mr.
• 41:14
Speaker 2: Boyle's story. He wrote a book about it. Definitely looking
• 41:16
Speaker 2: forward to his sit-down. with Hoppy on State of Minds.
• 41:19
Speaker 2: And again, that will drop this evening on the Metro

Speaker 2: ineffective in my job and still make millions. It is

• 44:59
Speaker 2: Page was unaware of the two trying to step out
• 45:01
Speaker 2: to get him in until they did.
• 45:02
  Speaker 1: Again, I.
• 45:10
Speaker 2: I appreciate all that, but I would really probably like
• 45:14
Speaker 2: to talk to them about that. But I do appreciate it.
• 45:17
  Speaker 6: Mr.
• 45:17
Speaker 2: Page was on the show last Friday.
• 45:18
  Speaker 1: Mr.
• 45:18
Speaker 2: Page wants on the show. He's more than welcome to
• 45:21
Speaker 2: come on. He knows how to get here. He's been
• 45:23
Speaker 2: here before. Even if he is a Philadelphia Eagles fan,
• 45:26
Speaker 2: he should be able to find his way here. I
• 45:28
Speaker 2: want to tell you a really quick story. You know,
• 45:30
Speaker 2: we hear these stories all the time about people. And
• 45:34
Speaker 2: their West Virginia connections. And you've heard them and you've
• 45:37
Speaker 2: experienced them. You go somewhere where you think there's no
• 45:40
Speaker 2: way in heck anybody's going to know who I am
• 45:42
Speaker 2: or where I'm from. And you run into somebody with
• 45:45
Speaker 2: West Virginia ties or whatever. I got a text on Sunday.
• 45:50
Speaker 2: My wife and I were actually doing some early morning
• 45:54
Speaker 2: shopping at the grocery store. And I got a text
• 45:57
Speaker 2: from Kelly Steele, who is the president of Putnam County Tourism. Kelly,
• 46:02
Speaker 2: of course, has been on this show numerous times, and
• 46:04
Speaker 2: I served on the board at one point of Putnam
• 46:07
Speaker 2: County Tourism. Kelly and her husband, Jeff, are at Mount Rushmore.
• 46:14
Speaker 2: And she gets a text, and she texts me, and
• 46:16
Speaker 2: she says, you're never going to believe this. Kelly Steele
• 46:20
Speaker 2: of Putnam County Tourism and her husband, Jeff, are in
• 46:23
Speaker 2: Mount Rushmore today. and they run into Steve Bishop, Bishop
• 46:27
Speaker 2: of V100 fame. And the bishop actually called me. He's
• 46:31
Speaker 2: on vacation out there this week. He actually called me
• 46:33
Speaker 2: a couple days ago and said, you're never going to
• 46:35
Speaker 2: guess who I ran into at Mount Rushmore of all places.
• 46:39
Speaker 2: And I said, yeah, I think I already know. It
• 46:41
Speaker 2: was Kelly and her husband. And so the story is
• 46:44
Speaker 2: that they were about to enter the park, and I
• 46:46
Speaker 2: guess her husband had on a West Virginia University baseball cap.
• 46:50
Speaker 2: And Bishop just saw the cap and yells out, hey,
• 46:54
Speaker 2: West Virginia guy. not knowing who he was. And then
• 46:57
Speaker 2: they turn around and they realize that Bishop knew Kelly
• 47:00
Speaker 2: because Kelly's been on V100 as well. And it's like,
• 47:03
Speaker 2: they go all the way to Mount Rushmore and they
• 47:06
Speaker 2: run into somebody, not only from West Virginia, but somebody
• 47:10
Speaker 2: that was a friend of the program as Kelly is
• 47:13
Speaker 2: being president of Putnam County Tourism. I thought that story
• 47:16
Speaker 2: just kind of blew me away. When you hear these
• 47:18
Speaker 2: stories all the time, you go somewhere and you run into...
• 47:20
Speaker 2: Somebody that you weren't expected to see there. Well, apparently
• 47:23
Speaker 2: they all hooked up. Okay, that's a bad story. They
• 47:26
Speaker 2: all gathered there together today or over the weekend at
• 47:29
Speaker 2: Mount Rushmore, of all places.
• 47:31
  Speaker 6: I don't know.
• 47:31
Speaker 2: I just thought that was an interesting story. Text, I
• 47:35
Speaker 2: read a poll on dreaded Facebook. All that answered were
• 47:38
Speaker 2: 100% against trusting Trump. Others were 100% for. Not one
• 47:42
Speaker 2: picked 20 to 50 to 75. Come on, America, says
• 47:44
Speaker 2: the texter. Text Dave, on Tuesday, the House adopted a
• 47:51
Speaker 2: resolution by a vote of 220 to 192 to denounce
• 47:56
Speaker 2: socialism in all forms, with eight Democrats voting with all
• 48:00
Speaker 2: Republicans in favor, two Democrats voted present. Tell me again
• 48:03
Speaker 2: how the Democrats are still moderates. I read that a
• 48:07
Speaker 2: little bit earlier. I read somebody had posted something about
• 48:10
Speaker 2: that vote. And to that, I would say, in theory,
• 48:15
Speaker 2: this is my opinion. Yes, I'm all about denouncing whatever.
• 48:21
Speaker 2: But don't we have other things to worry about other
• 48:24
Speaker 2: than symbolic things? I'm just saying I would I mean,
• 48:28
Speaker 2: I would prefer I appreciate the thought I would prefer
• 48:31
Speaker 2: that our politicos in Washington vote. actually focus on economy
• 48:36
Speaker 2: and jobs and things of that nature. Just saying. Just saying.
• 48:40
Speaker 2: Get ready for high school football Friday night. We hope
• 48:43
Speaker 2: the weather cooperates. As Brian Hughes says, we could be
• 48:45
Speaker 2: looking at some late-day storms tomorrow. Our WCHS Game of
• 48:48
Speaker 2: the Week is in the land of the Redskins as
• 48:50
Speaker 2: Hurricane will host George Washington. Coverage tomorrow night at 7.
• 48:53
Speaker 2: And then over on KWS tomorrow, you're home with the
• 48:55
Speaker 2: Herbert Hoover Huskies. Hoover will be taking on Winfield at home.
• 48:58
Speaker 2: Generals and the Huskies tomorrow night. 96-1 KWS. And college
• 49:02
Speaker 2: is not all about WVU and Marshall. There are other games,
• 49:05
Speaker 2: including MEC games. Saturday afternoon on 107.3 The Beat, we
• 49:10
Speaker 2: will have coverage of West Virginia State traveling to Moon Township,
• 49:13
Speaker 2: Pennsylvania to take on Robert Morris. And that is coming
• 49:18
Speaker 2: up again on Saturday. on your home of West Virginia
• 49:21
Speaker 2: State football they did the coaches show live at the
• 49:23
Speaker 2: pitch last night 107.3 the beat back to football just
• 49:27
Speaker 2: for a moment particularly WVU I was listening to Ask
• 49:31
Speaker 2: the Lawyer with Harvey and Tom Payton which by the
• 49:33
Speaker 2: way I think Tom Payton is celebrating a birthday today
• 49:35
Speaker 2: I think I saw that somewhere so If that is
• 49:38
Speaker 2: the case, Tom Payton, happy birthday. If it's not your birthday,
• 49:41
Speaker 2: then it will be at some point. So Harvey and
• 49:45
Speaker 2: Tom both on the show today. Harvey calling for the
• 49:49
Speaker 2: upset for Coastal Carolina to beat the Mountaineers in Morgantown
• 49:55
Speaker 2: on Saturday. Then I had a phone call yesterday. And
• 50:00
Speaker 2: I missed what Tom said about that. But Harvey Payton,
• 50:03
Speaker 2: and I know nobody's ever going to question Harvey Payton's
• 50:05
Speaker 2: loyalty to WVU. He's just calling it like he sees it.
• 50:07
  Speaker 2: I'm a Cowboy fan. I'm a Marshall fan. And I
• 50:10
Speaker 2: can tell you when I think they're going to lose, okay?
• 50:13
Speaker 2: But he says Coastal Carolina beats WVU. That's what Harvey said.
• 50:16
Speaker 2: I did not have that one. I would not have
• 50:18
Speaker 2: predicted that for Mr.
• 50:19
  Speaker 6: Payton.
• 50:20
  Speaker 2: I'm sure he's hoping he's wrong, though. So I do
• 50:23
Speaker 2: want to remind you that, though, it is a noon
• 50:25
Speaker 2: kickoff Saturday in Morgantown for the Mountaineers and Coastal. And,
• 50:28
Speaker 2: of course, they're going to be retiring Pat White's No. 5.
• 50:32
Speaker 2: And keep in mind that Pat White is a coach
• 50:35
Speaker 2: for WVU. So they're going to do the ceremony at
• 50:40
  Speaker 2: 1145 a.m.
• 50:42
  Speaker 6: Sharp.
• 50:43
Speaker 2: And I say that because I know a lot of
• 50:44
Speaker 2: folks are going to be heading up to Morgantown for
• 50:46
Speaker 2: the season opener for the Mountaineers in Coastal Carolina. It
• 50:49
Speaker 2: is a noon kickoff. This ceremony is going to be
• 50:52
Speaker 2: at 1145. And people have said, to me saying, well,
• 50:56
Speaker 2: why don't they have this at halftime? Well, because Pat
• 50:58
Speaker 2: White is a coach. And coaches tend to be a
• 51:01
Speaker 2: little bit busy at halftime. If you don't believe me,
• 51:04
Speaker 2: watch some of the interviews that reporters try to get
• 51:07
Speaker 2: with them before they head back into the locker room.
• 51:09
Speaker 2: They're a little bit busy at halftime. So I say
• 51:11
Speaker 2: that if you're going to be tailgating up there, getting
• 51:14
Speaker 2: ready for the Mountaineers in Coastal Carolina, this Pat White
• 51:17
Speaker 2: ceremony is going to be at 1145. So put down
• 51:21
Speaker 2: the mimosas and the hot dogs and the beer and
• 51:23
Speaker 2: whatever just for a moment. Get inside the stadium. 1145
• 51:26
Speaker 2: is when they are going to do that. Rightfully so.
• 51:29
Speaker 2: to retire Pat White's number five. Again, it is a
• 51:33
Speaker 2: noon kickoff. And as for my Marshall Thundering Herd, they
• 51:37
Speaker 2: travel to Happy Valley to take on Penn State Saturday afternoon.
• 51:40
Speaker 2: Speaking of predictions, keep in mind that Northern Dave Wilson
• 51:44
Speaker 2: on talk line called for the upset that Marshall will
• 51:47
Speaker 2: beat Penn State in Happy Valley. I'm just saying. Hope
• 51:50
Speaker 2: he's right. That's the only time I ever hope that
• 51:53
Speaker 2: Dave Wilson is right about anything. Wilson Meadows coming up
• 51:55
Speaker 2: live from the Greenbrier for the Business Summit 1006. I'll
• 51:58
Speaker 2: be back later today with Metro News Midday with 13 News.
• 52:01
Speaker 2: And tonight, live anchor Amanda Barron and me, powered by
• 52:03
Speaker 2: Selene Goloff. Ryan Nicholson, thank you so much. I will
• 52:06
Speaker 2: see you once again tomorrow and then later today as well.
• 52:09
Speaker 2: Until then, have fun. I love somebody.
• 52:23
Speaker 1: WCHSAL, W243DRFM Charleston, and W283AQ Crosslanes, a WVRC media station.
