- 0:09Speaker 1: Jeff legwad his appearances are always must listen radio. We
- 0:13Speaker 1: learn a lot, brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 0:16Speaker 1: of Electrical Workers. Start with a job and with the
- 0:18Speaker 1: career IBW Local sixty eight. It's Leggy, ye ye ye
- 0:24Speaker 1: on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five Jeff Legwald on
- 0:32Speaker 1: a broad afternoon, brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 0:34Speaker 1: of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start with a
- 0:37Speaker 1: job and with a career. It's the start of the
- 0:41Speaker 1: career for Sheduer Sanders and Travis Hunter and all of
- 0:46Speaker 1: the young stars that are going into the NFL Draft
- 0:49Speaker 1: from the University of Colorado. Jeff Legwald, he was not
- 0:53Speaker 1: hard to find at the showcase. Today he covers the
- 0:57Speaker 1: Broncos in the NFL and the NFL Draft for ESPN,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and he's with us right now. Leggy. How you doing, man?
- 1:03Speaker 2: I'm great? Are you guys?
- 1:04Speaker 1: We're doing great?
- 1:04Speaker 2: Leggy? Uh?
- 1:05Speaker 1: First things first, you you've done the pro day circuit before,
- 1:08Speaker 1: you've you've seen these things a time or two. Uh,
- 1:11Speaker 1: clearly everything is we'll call it unique when you enter
- 1:15Speaker 1: into the coach prime sphere. Uh, where where does today
- 1:19Speaker 1: sort of stack up for you in terms of pro
- 1:22Speaker 1: day spectacles that you've seen in your life?
- 1:26Speaker 2: You know, I probably wasn't quite too uh University of
- 1:30Speaker 2: Miami in the heyday and made a couple of those
- 1:34Speaker 2: back in the day.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Probably saw someome stuff. Huh.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, and uh, Scouts always talk about by
- 1:40Speaker 2: US Pro Day too for kind of you know, pumping
- 1:45Speaker 2: it up and all that.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I remember Zach Wilson's performance at a BYU pro day
- 1:50Speaker 1: was pretty damn good looking.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean they've always had the reputation in
- 1:56Speaker 2: recent years for having one of those pro days, Like
- 1:58Speaker 2: Scouts like going to that is a you know, humdrome
- 2:01Speaker 2: another day on the road. Yeah, but this was very
- 2:05Speaker 2: much you know, they they you could tell that they
- 2:08Speaker 2: were intent. You know, he he's always said, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 2: his quote has always been it's about the NFL, not
- 2:15Speaker 2: the NIL And I think that was the message, you know,
- 2:19Speaker 2: it was it was, hey, come look at us. You
- 2:22Speaker 2: know there was ah, it ran on time. I mean,
- 2:26Speaker 2: they were efficient. You could tell he was very intent
- 2:30Speaker 2: on making that a very structured event for his guys
- 2:36Speaker 2: to show to put on a show. I mean he
- 2:40Speaker 2: he basically was saying, hey, this is a show. Go
- 2:45Speaker 2: go show them what you can do. And I thought, uh,
- 2:49Speaker 2: I thought it was really uh. I think the people
- 2:51Speaker 2: I talked to came away with you know that things
- 2:55Speaker 2: ran on time, it moved along, that it didn't drag along.
- 2:58Speaker 2: They were professional about it. And I think that was
- 3:01Speaker 2: the message he wanted to send. You want to be able,
- 3:04Speaker 2: you know, to all in this nil world. You know,
- 3:08Speaker 2: everything is is an advantage, and I think they I
- 3:14Speaker 2: think Dean Sanders is very much trying to tell young players, Hey,
- 3:18Speaker 2: you want to be where we and learn how to
- 3:21Speaker 2: be an NFL player? Come here, all right?
- 3:24Speaker 3: How do you think how do you think Shador starting
- 3:27Speaker 3: with him did, How do you think everybody else did?
- 3:29Speaker 3: I mean, there's some interesting analysis on NFL network. They
- 3:32Speaker 3: love the deep ball. They had some criticism basically if
- 3:36Speaker 3: some of the shorter passes, they said it tailed a
- 3:38Speaker 3: little bit. What was your thought on how he did
- 3:39Speaker 3: throwing the ball today?
- 3:41Speaker 2: Well, Andy, I thought they were very smart. You could
- 3:45Speaker 2: tell they put together a collection of throws. He was
- 3:49Speaker 2: very good at it. I would guess, Uh not guess,
- 3:53Speaker 2: but I would bet you that he did this exact
- 3:56Speaker 2: workout multiple times leading up to this, right down to
- 4:00Speaker 2: each individual throw in the order that he did them,
- 4:04Speaker 2: so he was very prepared for this day. I think
- 4:07Speaker 2: he was very intent on showing he could come back
- 4:10Speaker 2: from center, that he could do three, five and seven
- 4:14Speaker 2: step drops, because he was really smooth doing those things.
- 4:18Speaker 2: He did some play action out from under center and
- 4:22Speaker 2: out of the gun. I think he wanted to show people, look,
- 4:25Speaker 2: I could run NFL stuff. Here I am doing it.
- 4:29Speaker 2: And I think he wanted to show he could throw
- 4:31Speaker 2: on the move a little bit. And the deep ball
- 4:35Speaker 2: was very pretty, so he covered that, you know, the
- 4:40Speaker 2: shorter stuff. I think he was trying to muscle up
- 4:42Speaker 2: a little bit and throw it and I think that's
- 4:44Speaker 2: why he got a little bit of the tail.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Talking to Jeff Legwald here breaking down the CU Pro
- 4:49Speaker 1: Day in terms of the teams at the top, and
- 4:54Speaker 1: we know that they were well represented today at CU's
- 4:57Speaker 1: Pro Day. But Leggie, in terms of reading leaves, et cetera,
- 5:01Speaker 1: from just kind of looking around and seeing who was
- 5:03Speaker 1: in attendance, what did you take away from who was
- 5:07Speaker 1: there to watch Shador Sanders throw the football and who
- 5:11Speaker 1: was there to see Travis Hunter run routes?
- 5:14Speaker 2: Well, you know, Nate, I think you know, Cleveland made
- 5:18Speaker 2: this a very big.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Weekend for them.
- 5:24Speaker 2: They they took the two guys out for you know,
- 5:27Speaker 2: the formal dinner last last night, and the team owner
- 5:32Speaker 2: was here, Jim Haslam, you know, the top team brass.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So I think they were the most prominent in terms
- 5:40Speaker 2: of executives. Now, the Titans have a private workout with
- 5:44Speaker 2: both of them scheduled next week, so some will make,
- 5:49Speaker 2: you know, some note of who didn't come for the Titans,
- 5:52Speaker 2: but they're getting their own look at both guys, and
- 5:55Speaker 2: I think both guys will you know, do drills and
- 5:59Speaker 2: throw and whatever the Titans want them to do in
- 6:01Speaker 2: a private workout. That's the power of the number one pick.
- 6:06Speaker 2: But I think that the Browns were the most, you know,
- 6:10Speaker 2: flexing the most today. But he has had a good
- 6:12Speaker 2: contingent because it's close. But everybody was here. I saw
- 6:17Speaker 2: so many coaches and scouts I know, and personnel people.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I mean, this was this was one of the most
- 6:27Speaker 2: one of the best attended Pro days I've been to.
- 6:30Speaker 3: What do you make of Dave All not being there.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Watching Get Up this morning on your very network. They
- 6:34Speaker 3: we're talking about how dab All wouldn't be there now,
- 6:38Speaker 3: Mike Tannenbaum said, and that means they're not picking him
- 6:40Speaker 3: because he'd be at the Pro day if you wanted.
- 6:42Speaker 3: And Graziano said that, no, Da b All never attends
- 6:45Speaker 3: a pro day. What do you make of it? And
- 6:49Speaker 3: him being shador by the way, I should probably clarify that.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I've never seen day Ball in the Pro Day,
- 6:54Speaker 2: so I I and Dan Grasiano Graus covered him in
- 7:00Speaker 2: New York, so he knows him. So I again, we
- 7:05Speaker 2: all try to fit the tea leaves this time of year,
- 7:08Speaker 2: and I think sometimes it's very dangerous to make assumptions
- 7:11Speaker 2: about you know what they're gonna do. I mean, the
- 7:14Speaker 2: Broncos drafted Cutler in the first round and never spoke
- 7:18Speaker 2: to him one time leading up to the drafts, so
- 7:21Speaker 2: you know, take your pick what you want to believe.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I think the fact you know it's all on video,
- 7:28Speaker 2: day Ball can see exactly what went on from any
- 7:31Speaker 2: angle he wants it if he wants to. I don't
- 7:34Speaker 2: think that precludes them from picking him.
- 7:38Speaker 1: We're kicking it with Jeff Legwald here on a Friday afternoon.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald's appearance is brought to you by the International
- 7:45Speaker 1: Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. You start
- 7:48Speaker 1: with the job and you end with a career real quick.
- 7:51Speaker 3: I'm sorry to cut you off, but good good eyes
- 7:54Speaker 3: by Mark Springer. Hey, guess what, Jeff picture from the
- 7:57Speaker 3: Giants of Dabo actually in attendance.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Sh Yeah, I didn't. I didn't see again. It was packed.
- 8:06Speaker 2: It was absolutely packed. I you know, I had people
- 8:09Speaker 2: texting me, hey, I'm here, like, you know, let's talk.
- 8:13Speaker 2: And I never found them, you know. So it's just like, uh,
- 8:17Speaker 2: there were as many and they you know, there were
- 8:19Speaker 2: some fans and visitors and family. It was it. You know,
- 8:22Speaker 2: they made it. They did it upright. I think if
- 8:24Speaker 2: you're gonna do a pro day, I think that's how
- 8:26Speaker 2: you should do it. Make it a big deal for
- 8:28Speaker 2: the kids. It's a one cell, a lifetime thing. Just
- 8:31Speaker 2: just making a big deal and let them let them
- 8:34Speaker 2: go out there and do their thing. Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And then and I thought they looked impressive. It was
- 8:38Speaker 1: a good looking event on television. Jeff.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Maybe I'll tell you. Joannas Hunter ran routes. If people
- 8:45Speaker 2: had concerns about the uh, and I you know, I've
- 8:48Speaker 2: been told and I've seen in games his routes were
- 8:51Speaker 2: a little muddy and games, uh, they were precise. Today
- 8:55Speaker 2: they were sharp. He hit the hash marks. See, he
- 8:58Speaker 2: showed footwork. I mean, you know, sure people want a
- 9:02Speaker 2: forty from him, but today they saw a whole lot
- 9:06Speaker 2: of Travis Hunter wide receiver and there will be some
- 9:09Speaker 2: teams who say he is the number one receiver on
- 9:11Speaker 2: the board.
- 9:12Speaker 1: The Schadour conversation Leggie to that point has you know,
- 9:15Speaker 1: it sucks up so much oxygen because it's a quarterback
- 9:17Speaker 1: and because you know, it's a little sexier. Right, he
- 9:19Speaker 1: could be sliding like Travis Hunters going in the top
- 9:22Speaker 1: five at the draft. He's probably going in the top
- 9:24Speaker 1: three of the draft. It's it seems pretty certain. Hard
- 9:28Speaker 1: to believe there's a world where he would fall beyond
- 9:30Speaker 1: New England at number four either way. With Travis Hunter
- 9:34Speaker 1: there today. I mean, Leggy, the words, you know, words
- 9:38Speaker 1: like generational talent get tossed around with him. You know.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Mark Johnson earlier today telling Scott Hastings that, according to
- 9:45Speaker 1: Gary Barnett, who's seen a thing or two. It's the
- 9:47Speaker 1: greatest college football player that he has ever seen in
- 9:50Speaker 1: his life. Travis Hunter is viewed as a sure thing,
- 9:54Speaker 1: can't miss kind of player. For those teams that are
- 9:59Speaker 1: at the top that maybe aren't in love with Shador,
- 10:03Speaker 1: like the Browns, like the New York Giants, they got
- 10:08Speaker 1: to be just falling all over themselves when they see
- 10:10Speaker 1: Travis Hunt, right, Yeah.
- 10:13Speaker 2: I mean the issue for him is you got to
- 10:15Speaker 2: have a plan. He won't be the best he can
- 10:18Speaker 2: be at something unless you have a very definitive plan.
- 10:22Speaker 2: You can't sort of say he's an offensive player sometimes
- 10:28Speaker 2: and a defensive player sometimes, because then he won't be
- 10:31Speaker 2: his best at something. And I think that was when
- 10:34Speaker 2: I've talked to Champ Bailey about it. That was always
- 10:37Speaker 2: Champs point. At some point you have to pick a
- 10:40Speaker 2: side of the ball and dial in if you're going
- 10:43Speaker 2: to be a long term pro. And guess what I had.
- 10:48Speaker 2: You know, I've been a tons of pro days, I
- 10:50Speaker 2: mean tons, and I had some of the most fun
- 10:53Speaker 2: today standing with Champ Bailey just talking about Travis Hunter
- 11:00Speaker 2: and Shador. And then I was next to Champ when
- 11:03Speaker 2: Shador was throwing, and you know, again, I you know,
- 11:09Speaker 2: you do this to write about football and get to
- 11:11Speaker 2: know people and see players and all those things, but
- 11:15Speaker 2: to be there and sort of talking to Champ while
- 11:18Speaker 2: he's watching all this play out in real time, because
- 11:21Speaker 2: before Travis Champ is the is the best two way
- 11:26Speaker 2: football player I've ever seen with my own eyes in
- 11:28Speaker 2: a game in my in my entire career, and Travis
- 11:33Speaker 2: is pretty damn close to that.
- 11:34Speaker 1: And that's look man like that. That's a great guy
- 11:37Speaker 1: to sit there and listen to in that situation. And
- 11:39Speaker 1: exactly to that point, Jeff and you talked to Champ
- 11:42Speaker 1: Bailey about it, like if clearly Tennessee's gonna take cam Ward,
- 11:46Speaker 1: if you're Cleveland and you're the Giants, like those conversations
- 11:50Speaker 1: they have to be happening right now, right like you
- 11:53Speaker 1: have to you have to be going around the room
- 11:55Speaker 1: and saying, Okay, how do we assemble this plan so
- 11:58Speaker 1: that if we're using this this extremely valuable top three
- 12:02Speaker 1: pick on this player, we are putting this guy in
- 12:05Speaker 1: position to be a Hall of Famer, to absolutely reach
- 12:09Speaker 1: his potential. Like it can't be one of those things
- 12:11Speaker 1: of like, well we think we might work him in
- 12:14Speaker 1: on offense, like hopefully those teams, and granted they're not
- 12:17Speaker 1: good teams. They're bad, that's why they're picking in the
- 12:20Speaker 1: top three. But hopefully they're already having those conversations and
- 12:24Speaker 1: putting a roadmap in place for the guy.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, you gotta know what Monday through Saturday is
- 12:31Speaker 2: going to look like. Yeah, exactly what time does he
- 12:34Speaker 2: go to the meetings, houses, recovery, you know all of
- 12:38Speaker 2: these things. And again, even at best, the two way
- 12:42Speaker 2: experiment is probably only a two or a three year
- 12:47Speaker 2: thing until the one side of the ball becomes very
- 12:51Speaker 2: spot duty because a snap count durability concerns. You have
- 12:57Speaker 2: to practice in the NFL. He could not ruxture his
- 13:00Speaker 2: week like he did here when you know he went
- 13:04Speaker 2: very late in the week here before he would sort
- 13:07Speaker 2: of return to full activity. That ain't gonna fly in
- 13:11Speaker 2: the NFL. He's gonna have to practice, and that's always
- 13:14Speaker 2: been Champs point. It's you have to have a practice
- 13:18Speaker 2: plan for him or he will never be as good
- 13:20Speaker 2: as he can be on one side of the ball.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Let alone.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Two, let's talk about Will Sheppard. We talked about him
- 13:27Speaker 3: a little bit with Tyler. I texted you in between
- 13:29Speaker 3: things because again he's a big bodied receiver. How do
- 13:33Speaker 3: you think he looked? And I I'm a fan of
- 13:35Speaker 3: Lejonte Wester. He was always a fun kid to talk
- 13:37Speaker 3: to after games. And I did notice speed at times.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Does he have any shot at all? Is he too slight?
- 13:43Speaker 3: And of course Jimmy Horn break down the other guys
- 13:46Speaker 3: we saw catching the ball out there today.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Well Horn ran great. Horn ran in the four fours,
- 13:51Speaker 2: so that's always gets people attention when you're you drop
- 13:54Speaker 2: a four to four on him, and he ran four
- 13:57Speaker 2: to four flat, so that's almost I think his first
- 14:01Speaker 2: forty was four to four flat on my watch. So
- 14:05Speaker 2: and then, uh, I thought Shepherd had a great day.
- 14:08Speaker 2: You wanna you wanna you know, you know, you guys know.
- 14:13Speaker 2: I always say that the movement after a Pro day
- 14:16Speaker 2: or the combine is exaggerated in the media compared to
- 14:20Speaker 2: the real world of on NFL draft boards. But if
- 14:25Speaker 2: you were gonna make a move on a Pro day,
- 14:27Speaker 2: you have one like Shepherd did. He was spectacular. He
- 14:31Speaker 2: jumped forty and a half, which is that's as good
- 14:34Speaker 2: as anybody. I mean, Calvin Johnson is that's Calvin Johnson's
- 14:39Speaker 2: vertical jump zone.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Wow.
- 14:41Speaker 2: And then dropped. He dropped two four fives back to back.
- 14:45Speaker 2: So that's that's explosiveness and functional speed. So uh, that's
- 14:50Speaker 2: a great workout for a guy with his frame. I
- 14:53Speaker 2: mean that's you're you're talking just over six two. We
- 14:57Speaker 2: measured in at just over six to two and and
- 15:00Speaker 2: one ninety six. So that's a big frame receiver who
- 15:03Speaker 2: showed a lot of explosiveness. And when they were throwing,
- 15:07Speaker 2: he looked very good and drill. So I beyond the
- 15:11Speaker 2: you know, the marquee guys, he I think he was
- 15:14Speaker 2: the guy who had the best gay uh and helped
- 15:16Speaker 2: himself the most. But the receivers all looked very good.
- 15:19Speaker 2: That you know, Chadour is a very accurate quarterback. And
- 15:23Speaker 2: if you want to be a receiver who gets some
- 15:26Speaker 2: love on a pro day, get a quarterback who puts
- 15:29Speaker 2: it in frame as much as Shadoor does on obvious
- 15:33Speaker 2: you know pros that were obviously he was very comfortable
- 15:36Speaker 2: with with players. He was very comfortable with and I
- 15:40Speaker 2: thought Dion Sanders was pretty smart. He it sounded like
- 15:45Speaker 2: he framed it to these guys, Hey, this might be
- 15:48Speaker 2: the last time you're on the field together. Really enjoy
- 15:51Speaker 2: it and show something, and I think that concept helped
- 15:56Speaker 2: all the guys.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Very cool stuff right there. Jeff Lake was up at
- 16:00Speaker 1: the CU Pro Day today, Leggy. We got to ask you, though,
- 16:04Speaker 1: before you roll out of here tomorrow at four o'clock Florida, Auburn,
- 16:07Speaker 1: seven o'clock Houston, Duke, before we chat on Monday, who's
- 16:13Speaker 1: going to be playing for the National Championship.
- 16:16Speaker 2: I'm gonna go Duke Florida. Yeah, my, but Cinderella nowhere
- 16:22Speaker 2: to be found. Nope, Baby, you're looking at four ones.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Chalk all over the place now, and I'm with you. Man.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Here's the biggest thing, Leggy, Duke Florida is the game
- 16:31Speaker 1: I want to watch. That's the biggest thing, you know.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I just, I guess part of me just wants to
- 16:38Speaker 2: see flag in a game for all the marbles, you know.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I just want to see what that looks like because
- 16:44Speaker 2: it'll be the only one he plays in. So you know,
- 16:47Speaker 2: he's moving on. Yeah, let's say I think they all are.
- 16:52Speaker 1: I think my watch is moving on. I think Nipple's
- 16:54Speaker 1: moving on. I think they're all moving on. But guess
- 16:57Speaker 1: what Shire's gonna get Carlos Boozers kids next year. So
- 17:00Speaker 1: he's gonna be just fine. Jeff Legwald. Everybody see you
- 17:03Speaker 1: pro day he was up there to cover it. Read
- 17:05Speaker 1: to stuff at ESPN dot com. Jeff Legwald. Great work
- 17:07Speaker 1: as always, man, Thank you, Thanks Smilas Jeff Legwald. Brought
- 17:11Speaker 1: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW
- 17:14Speaker 1: Local sixty eight. Start with a job and with a career.
