- 0:21Hello and welcome back to another fabulous edition of
- 0:24World Retail Signals. It's Monday.
- 0:27We are pre recording this because if you're not in Berlin
- 0:30at World Retail Congress right now, where are you?
- 0:33And so without further ado, let's start with my fabulous
- 0:36quick introductions. For those of you who may be the
- 0:39first time tuning in Neve, who are you and what do you do?
- 0:41Hi, it's lovely to be here again.
- 0:44I'm the programme director of World Retail Congress, so I won
- 0:48the corner agenda and with all our wonderful speakers.
- 0:51Fantastic, Ian. Hi Alex, I'm Ian Mcgargle.
- 0:54I'm Chair of the World Retail Congress, work obviously very
- 0:57close to you with Neve. We both build the programme,
- 1:00bring all the amazing speakers together, but but also oversee
- 1:04kind of the all the many parts that make up the the World
- 1:08Retail Congress that is about to to take place.
- 1:10Fantastic. So as I said, you're hopefully
- 1:12in Berlin watching this on your phone as as you're walking
- 1:15around. So we're going to this is World
- 1:17Retail Signals where we look at the signals that are shaping
- 1:20retail. And this week, we're going to
- 1:22start with you, Ian. What's top of mind?
- 1:25Umm, first point I was just want to raise was the luxury sector.
- 1:28I mean, umm, just a few days back, we had LVMH reporting
- 1:32their first quarter figures, which everyone was watching and
- 1:35waiting for, and they showed a 6% drop in sales, which is still
- 1:39adding to the general sense that luxury is, you know, had gone
- 1:44from being like 2 years ago, the absolute darling of the retail
- 1:47sector that just kept growing and growing.
- 1:49Caring Group similarly, sort of under real pressure.
- 1:51But equally, what was sort of looking beneath the surface of
- 1:54those numbers, they were highlighting the Middle East,
- 1:58which is the first time now we've started to hear that the
- 2:01impacts because, you know, Asia has been the driver of luxury
- 2:05and still is a big, big part for LVMH.
- 2:07But to see that, you know, it's really having an impact in a
- 2:11short period of time because it was only the first quarter, but
- 2:13it was already showing in, in those numbers.
- 2:16And you know, they were sort of saying if things don't calm down
- 2:19soon, then, you know, the Middle East again, been the real driver
- 2:24for retail and retail growth around the world.
- 2:28There's a real sort of question mark about that.
- 2:30But but go back to luxury more generally.
- 2:32It's interesting the the reporting I I saw the FT had a
- 2:35really in depth piece following on from LVHS figures, just
- 2:40again, questioning how luxury brands really work, looking up
- 2:42to the situation they find themselves in.
- 2:45That's, you know, prices have gone up and up and up and even
- 2:48high net worth people and or new money, whatever.
- 2:51You know, whichever category areas in the luxury sector, you
- 2:54know, they're, they're drawing a limit, as it were, to what
- 2:58they're prepared to pay and how often they will do.
- 3:01And so, so it's going to be interesting to watch.
- 3:03It's certainly something we'll be discussing here in in Berlin.
- 3:06You know what, what luxury brands, as any retailer does in
- 3:10this tough market, need to do. But I think luxury doesn't feel
- 3:13like it's sort of working up to the the reality of the world
- 3:17that they're now into. I I think so I mean I was in
- 3:21shock talk lux earlier this year and I got a bee in my bonnet
- 3:24because it just felt they put their head in the sand and
- 3:27ignored the main problem in luxury, which is for the new
- 3:31generation people, what does luxury actually mean right?
- 3:35Forget high net worth freedom individuals in the past, it
- 3:38meant products that are, that are made to last that, you know,
- 3:43you hold that bag or that handbag or that and, and the,
- 3:46the materials and everything. And because of TikTok and
- 3:49Instagram, most of these inexpensive bags or handbags
- 3:52have been ripped apart. And you're being told that this
- 3:55product actually isn't larger. And I think I'll be, you know,
- 3:58maybe I'll say no one else has to say.
- 3:59People feel they've been ripped off and they've gone.
- 4:03And I think LVMH and caring have been too dependent on AIPAC and
- 4:09Asia's growth, and that's been driving their growth at home
- 4:13where what's happened in APEC, you've got phenomenal luxury
- 4:16brands now increasing real craftsmanship, real workmanship.
- 4:21Yeah. Because in the past.
- 4:22So no, you can only build it in Italy, right?
- 4:24Or in France or in Paris. And, and so I, I don't think, I
- 4:27don't think it's like fatal. I don't think there's not coming
- 4:30back from it. But I just think you need to
- 4:31accept that people are especially like the big middle.
- 4:35They're being squeezed. China's being squeezed.
- 4:37And now as you're saying, S is being true.
- 4:38So where's growth going to come from?
- 4:40Because the Middle East was growth for a lot of retailers.
- 4:44Absolutely. Super interesting point.
- 4:46Did you have another one on that, Ian, as you like.
- 4:48Did you Well, just to add to that, what what was interesting
- 4:51though, when you dig into these LVMH numbers, the, the only the
- 4:54main highlight was Sephora. I know we talked yeah last time,
- 4:57but for growth and that beauty again, that whole sector.
- 5:01But Sephora, you know that that's that format, that formula
- 5:05is really working and it's expanding rapidly and that
- 5:08that's absolutely shown in the numbers.
- 5:10But it's, you know, it's, it's not luxury, but it, it delivers
- 5:13a sort almost luxury customer experience in the store and
- 5:15online. And I think they, they, they
- 5:17really have sort of found that winning formula.
- 5:19And but that whole sector, again, it's extraordinary what's
- 5:22happening in health, Wellness and beauty.
- 5:24I well, I mean, I've got AI mean you're being humble here because
- 5:27you had the CEO of Sephora. Well kick well, we're till
- 5:31Congress in Paris and I remember him getting his award on stage.
- 5:34The thing that struck me, obviously we had that tour of
- 5:37the branch, but it was how humble the guy was on stage.
- 5:41You know, here's the CEO and just side note, his post on
- 5:45LinkedIn for me was one of the most engaged posts by people
- 5:49from Sephora, which tells me a lot.
- 5:51You know, when people sort of get behind their leaders and
- 5:53like or engage or comment and it's like, oh, wow, it was a
- 5:56suit. I've got really cool guys.
- 5:57The first time I've seen him since I've never seen him since
- 6:00I don't know if he's still the CEO, but I did see him a world
- 6:03retail Congress. OK, perfect.
- 6:04Thank you, Nicky, coming on to. You.
- 6:06Yeah. So one of the stories that I
- 6:08wanted to talk about this week, Alex, is the ongoing struggle
- 6:12department stores are facing globally.
- 6:15And we've seen that in a few numbers coming out and in the
- 6:18past couple of weeks. And for decades, they were those
- 6:21anchors of city centres and big shopping destinations.
- 6:25And today, many are still grappling with a model that just
- 6:29simply isn't fitting to how consumers are wanting to shop.
- 6:33I think given that we just were speaking about Sephora really
- 6:37where they're competing with specialist retailers and digital
- 6:41first brands that can really create that customer experience
- 6:44that's so different and so unique.
- 6:47Plus, as we've just spoken about about luxury spending, those
- 6:51shifts in discretionary spends, footfall, pressure on consumer
- 6:55choices, I think, yeah, department stores that are
- 6:59continuing to face an uphill battle.
- 7:01But I think it's interesting that survival isn't impossible.
- 7:06And many of of the surviving department stores are really
- 7:10approaching it with radical changes.
- 7:12We have a few great examples speaking at World Retail
- 7:15Congress this week. So how those resilient,
- 7:19resilient players are rethinking that role of the department
- 7:23store, what the department store really should be and, and their
- 7:26new position to to create, curate brands and curate an
- 7:31experience for shoppers investing in services,
- 7:34hospitality and really sort of expanding that customer
- 7:40experience. So yes, bit of bad news, bit of
- 7:43good news. I think it's a mixed bag for
- 7:45department stores. Yeah, no, I think, I mean, I
- 7:48obviously you were listening to five things Friday last week
- 7:51from the UK because obviously you listen to all the time, but
- 7:54we we actually spoke about department stores and I and I
- 7:57have it here and this is Selfridges 40 Duke at Selfridges
- 8:01London and and you're like, what is this?
- 8:03This is their new membership suite to get an key to access
- 8:08this like you know, like we all fly.
- 8:10Sorry, not we all for those people who fly and go to members
- 8:13lounges in airports, you're very used to this concept of, you
- 8:16know, loyalty and the more you spend so you get access to this
- 8:20lounge, you have to be AVVA very I can't remember it's AVV thing
- 8:26like 25,000 lbs Yeah, it's not just the VIP, it's AVV like a
- 8:31very I can't remember what the other VS for Selfridges person.
- 8:35And so for £25,000 yeah, you get access to this area, which is a
- 8:40whole different thing. And, and again, because I spend
- 8:43my time in the industry and I know that NRF are sending a
- 8:46cohort to because you guys have got a good relationship.
- 8:51So I just want to quickly, and it's, this is just by
- 8:53coincidence. And when you were talking came
- 8:55to me, I'm moderating a session in Singapore later this year and
- 9:00we're talking about Serena. Serena, what?
- 9:02I can't remember if it's Indonesia or Malaysia.
- 9:04And I should know that because I'm moderating the session, but
- 9:06we only have the call yesterday. But one of the, and the reason I
- 9:09mentioned this is how in A and Asian, I remember seeing this in
- 9:13Shanghai, how culture, like tradition culture is coming into
- 9:18departments as in they're trying to fold in some form of deeper
- 9:22meaningful connections. And for me, just following on
- 9:25from what you said, I just find these two examples, one in
- 9:29London, one in Malaysia. Just out curiosity, who who have
- 9:32you got speaking this year? And Andre Major, the group CEO
- 9:36of Selfridges is actually speaking.
- 9:39Hope you will hear all about 40 Duke.
- 9:42Richardson Oh, that's good. I didn't actually know that, so
- 9:44I'm I'm ready, chuckled with. You lined that up perfectly,
- 9:47Alex. Thank you very much.
- 9:50So he'll be talking about that and I really, we have to ask him
- 9:54whoever's interviewing him about VVSPS.
- 9:58OK, final one from me, although I've done a lot of talking
- 10:01already, it's a theme that I mentioned.
- 10:04I think 2 shows ago we spoke about the major themes that are
- 10:08shaping retail in the US. Walmart has gone strength to
- 10:12strength. It feels like Amazon's moving
- 10:14more into physical, Walmart's moving more into digital.
- 10:17So there's this all like they're trying to be a, you know, better
- 10:20in all rounds. But this is something I remember
- 10:22actually, a technology company, sorry, electronics company in
- 10:26the UK, me having a conversation with them and saying, why are
- 10:29all your products desperate? So imagine I want to lose a
- 10:32little bit of weight, which I may do every now in time, and I
- 10:35come in to buy some, you know, fitness tracker.
- 10:38Why do you not have your blenders that help or your other
- 10:41products that help me on my journey as some sort of
- 10:44connected journey? And they were like, well, that's
- 10:46a really good point. We'll have to do that.
- 10:47Well, here you go. Walmart's actually doing that
- 10:50around GOP ones. It's a massive movement.
- 10:52It's only gonna continue to get bigger.
- 10:55And they've created a whole ecosystem from supplying your
- 10:58GOP ones to, you know, taking you on a journey with it, which
- 11:02I find incredibly interesting that yeah, that that they
- 11:06released this week. So that's my little one on that.
- 11:09I mean, building on that, Alex, I mean, certainly conversations
- 11:11I'm having a certain retailers, they are now talking about
- 11:14building a ecosystem as people want to call it.
- 11:16Like, you know, funny thinking out-of-the-box, literally, you
- 11:19know, as you, as you're talking about, you know, building
- 11:21adjacencies in store, but have adjacencies services, you know,
- 11:26that go out beyond the store, you know, whatever that might
- 11:28be, but sort of thinking about who your customs are and, and
- 11:31the services that they want that, you know, really start to
- 11:35open up, you can be really invitive.
- 11:36And we're starting to see that from retailers.
- 11:38You know, that's a great example you've mentioned, but I was
- 11:41talking to the founder of Fresnap, the, the pets retailer
- 11:45in Germany that's now operating from many markets in, in Europe.
- 11:49And he was talking about exactly that, that, you know, they have
- 11:51to they, but also other retailers need to start thinking
- 11:54differently. And how do you build on your
- 11:56brand basically into new, new areas?
- 11:58Because I think, you know, that's where the market is going
- 12:00And, you know, think of your customers not as the some that
- 12:03comes to your website or your, or walk through the door.
- 12:05They, they, you know, they want to interact with you or could
- 12:08interact with you in many, many different ways.
- 12:10I think that's a really, really powerful point.
- 12:11You might. Yeah, I think the the a jade, a
- 12:14decency. I obviously I forget my retail
- 12:17lingo, but it's something that I think it's it's a miss, you
- 12:20know, and I remember actually some it was I think it was
- 12:23PetSmart or someone in the UK or even Petco.
- 12:26They were talking about how, you know, people only come in to
- 12:29buy, for example, dog food and they forget the whole ecosystem.
- 12:33There's dog grooming, there's dog insurance, there's, you
- 12:35know, there's all the other elements.
- 12:37And it feels like that's really what needs to happen for this
- 12:40deeper relationship. OK, it's been fast-paced.
- 12:43We are at time of thank you again.
- 12:46I know you're have you got any nails left?
- 12:49I don't know if you bend them all off because it's like
- 12:51literally D-Day 2 days until we'll fly out to German.
- 12:55Sunday. When are you flying out to South
- 12:57Curiosity? Sunday.
- 12:58Sunday. OK.
- 12:59Well, I look forward to seeing you in.
- 13:01Absolutely. See you in Berlin.
- 13:02Yes. Take care.
- 13:03Thanks, Alex. Bye.
