- 0:02Speaker 1: Czech chech check.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning, Happy Friday, you happy unique Seattle sports Friday,
- 0:10Speaker 2: Greg Bella news to have been, Christopher Kid with you
- 0:12Speaker 2: are alive. But Jimmy's on first across the street from Blomenfield,
- 0:15Speaker 2: two hours before the first World Cup US men's soccer
- 0:19Speaker 2: match ever in the Pacific Northwest ever in Seattle, and
- 0:23Speaker 2: I have next to me Seattle Soccer Royalty Sounders. Yeah right, saundershot,
- 0:31Speaker 2: Brian Smetzer, Seattle's favorite side.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is Seattle's favorite is.
- 0:37Speaker 2: With us as well, and Brian's between the two of
- 0:41Speaker 2: us here. Jimmy's on first, two hours before the biggest
- 0:44Speaker 2: international soccer day in the Pacific Northwest history. I don't
- 0:46Speaker 2: think that's hyperbole to say that. No, Brian, you're a
- 0:49Speaker 2: lifelong seattle Man in soccer, your family. It goes well
- 0:55Speaker 2: beyond the Sounders. What does this day mean for you personally?
- 0:59Speaker 3: Uh, it's the culmination of years of you know, soccer
- 1:05Speaker 3: fans in this area. You know, you start back in
- 1:09Speaker 3: the fifties sixties with the ethnic leagues. My dad used
- 1:13Speaker 3: to take me down to Lower Woodland and the Germanian
- 1:17Speaker 3: Germans would play against the Hungarians and the Italians had
- 1:20Speaker 3: a team, just had a team. That was my first
- 1:23Speaker 3: taste of all of it. Then, obviously as you grow
- 1:26Speaker 3: up little a little bit, a little bit older. My
- 1:30Speaker 3: dad took us to Germany in nineteen seventy four, so
- 1:34Speaker 3: right after the World Cup there, that was my next experience.
- 1:38Speaker 3: That was actually an interesting one because West Germany played
- 1:41Speaker 3: East Germany, you know, and we were playing around in
- 1:45Speaker 3: the square of my dad's hometown and we didn't know,
- 1:49Speaker 3: we're twelve years old. All of a sudden we see
- 1:51Speaker 3: this TV fly out the window because West Germany lost
- 1:55Speaker 3: that game one nothing. So that's another World Cup experience.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Then you fast forward that to you know, the World
- 2:02Speaker 3: Cup in ninety four. We saw a couple of games.
- 2:05Speaker 3: I went down to the Rose Bowl to watch USA Columbia.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I remember that vividly. Then you come to the Sounders
- 2:13Speaker 3: and you know, hosting big exhibitions, Barcelona, Chelsea, everybody.
- 2:17Speaker 1: There was a lot of a.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Lot of things going on, and all along every stop
- 2:22Speaker 3: of that journey, there's been Sounder fans, there's been soccer fans,
- 2:27Speaker 3: there's been fans of just being around here in Seattle,
- 2:31Speaker 3: and so now, yes, it is a culmination of everything
- 2:35Speaker 3: coming together for what is the biggest game I think
- 2:40Speaker 3: that Seattle has ever seen on a soccer stage because
- 2:44Speaker 3: it's the World Cup. I mean, look, I love Conker
- 2:47Speaker 3: CAF twenty twenty two. I love I love MLS Cup
- 2:50Speaker 3: twenty nineteen and twenty. Look, we've had some League's Cup
- 2:55Speaker 3: last year against MESSI I mean those are good memories
- 2:58Speaker 3: for all of us Sounder fans.
- 2:59Speaker 1: But this is the freaking World Cup.
- 3:01Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's it's it's massive.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Brian, how has Seattle in the US put on the
- 3:08Speaker 2: World Cup so far?
- 3:09Speaker 1: Eight days in? As you were awesome?
- 3:12Speaker 3: Look, it's awesome. I mean you walk around the stadium,
- 3:14Speaker 3: everybody's energized. You got activations up in downtown, you got
- 3:19Speaker 3: the you know, the barge. We got a barge. We
- 3:22Speaker 3: actually floated a barge in to you know, have people
- 3:24Speaker 3: watch the waterfront.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Is crazy. Uh, last night.
- 3:29Speaker 3: In Mexico, Mexico playing against South Korea. I was up
- 3:32Speaker 3: in Lake City, my my old stomping ground. It at
- 3:35Speaker 3: least goes up there just and people were crazy there.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I mean we've we've hosted in little parts of the city,
- 3:43Speaker 3: bigger parts of the city. Obviously around the stadium. Seattle's
- 3:46Speaker 3: knocked it out of the park.
- 3:48Speaker 2: How much is this the vision of Paul Allen when
- 3:51Speaker 2: he built this stadium? He built it the international soccer specifications,
- 3:55Speaker 2: hoping to get a World Cup. Have you thought of
- 3:58Speaker 2: that in the nod to Paul Allen away here?
- 4:00Speaker 3: Well, I think of it from time to time. Obviously
- 4:04Speaker 3: we wouldn't be here without him and he wouldn't be
- 4:08Speaker 3: here without the soccer community. So it was a win
- 4:11Speaker 3: win situation.
- 4:12Speaker 2: For Oside for those that aren't weren't here back in
- 4:14Speaker 2: the mid nineties when this stadium got approved by the
- 4:16Speaker 2: soccer community.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Well, there was a touch and go vote where, you know,
- 4:20Speaker 3: the people needed to vote to see how much money.
- 4:22Speaker 3: I look, I don't know all the details, but there
- 4:24Speaker 3: was some tax things and money and all that, and
- 4:29Speaker 3: the voters were going to approve this stadium or not.
- 4:33Speaker 3: And Paul Allen, to his credit, he said, you know what,
- 4:37Speaker 3: we're going to make sure that this stadium can host
- 4:39Speaker 3: big soccer events. And sure as heck, the soccer community
- 4:44Speaker 3: came and put a bunch of votes out there, because
- 4:46Speaker 3: this is what it turned into.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Yes, the World Cup is here today US and Australia.
- 4:51Speaker 2: The broadcast live here starting at eleven thirty pre game
- 4:55Speaker 2: twelve o'clock noon live on ninety three point three Kjar.
- 4:57Speaker 2: But we are the pregame show here, the Greg Best
- 4:59Speaker 2: Show with Christopher Kidd Well from Jimmy's On First with
- 5:02Speaker 2: coach Brian smetz Er the Sounders. Let me ask you
- 5:04Speaker 2: a quick soccer question. How how has coach Ponchettino change.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Pocheccino changed how Christian Rodin is used on the national
- 5:12Speaker 2: team and is it similar to how you employ him?
- 5:15Speaker 3: Well, I would hope that coach Pottoccino uses Christian today.
- 5:19Speaker 3: I mean Obed Vargas got in for Mexico yesterday. We'd
- 5:23Speaker 3: love to have some of our sounders or ex sounder
- 5:26Speaker 3: in Obed's case, and get on the field, touch the field.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Jordan got to play a few minutes down and cutter.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Uh.
- 5:32Speaker 3: But look, Potaccino is all about you know, the team first,
- 5:37Speaker 3: and it's the mentality and you bleed for your country
- 5:41Speaker 3: and the badge. That's how he grew up in Argentina
- 5:43Speaker 3: and you you felt that when you watch that Argentina
- 5:45Speaker 3: game the other day in Kansas City. I mean those fans,
- 5:48Speaker 3: that's what he was brought up with. And so he's
- 5:51Speaker 3: trying to instill some of that within the United States
- 5:56Speaker 3: soccer culture, and Christian is just the prime example of
- 6:01Speaker 3: somebody that has those same values. And so I'm hoping
- 6:05Speaker 3: and I think that's one of the reason why Christian
- 6:07Speaker 3: was on the team. Because Christian, every time you watch
- 6:09Speaker 3: him in a Sounder jersey, he does everything humanly possible
- 6:12Speaker 3: for us to get a good result.
- 6:14Speaker 2: There's the fact that Christian Polistics nursing as a calf
- 6:18Speaker 2: injury perhaps raised Christian rod it might.
- 6:21Speaker 3: I mean, look, he chose Sebastian Burhalter instead of Christian
- 6:25Speaker 3: the other game. But Christian's got a shot at playing
- 6:28Speaker 3: for sure. I mean, let's see how it goes. You know,
- 6:31Speaker 3: lineup's gonna be out here pretty soon. I mean, pull
- 6:33Speaker 3: asitch is the biggest question mark or biggest talking point.
- 6:37Speaker 3: But US has a good squad, a deep squad. So
- 6:41Speaker 3: if somebody gets injured or he wants to make some
- 6:43Speaker 3: changes because maybe we're ahead in the game or that
- 6:46Speaker 3: third game, he's gonna need to use everybody. Because it's
- 6:51Speaker 3: seven games to a final, that's right, it's a one
- 6:54Speaker 3: game more than in previous World Cups.
- 6:56Speaker 2: The US went and a winner. The winner of US
- 6:58Speaker 2: Australia has clinched, well, we'll clinch a spot in a
- 7:01Speaker 2: round to thirty two. A US win and a Paraguay
- 7:04Speaker 2: win over Turkey tonight means the US would clinch the
- 7:08Speaker 2: group and would get a favorable round to thirty two seeds.
- 7:10Speaker 2: If the US wins the group and they went around
- 7:13Speaker 2: to thirty two, they will play back here in Seattle
- 7:15Speaker 2: July sixth, in the knockout stage around the sixteen Most awesome.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Ryan mas Vita Marae.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Is with us from Castadian Sports and that I'm sure
- 7:24Speaker 2: you have soccer questions for coach Brian Smeer.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I do.
- 7:28Speaker 2: First, as I had to jump on. I mean, I
- 7:30Speaker 2: was so giddy with yeah, I just drove from Lake City.
- 7:35Speaker 1: That's right.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I only get a chance to say this because when
- 7:37Speaker 2: I'm covering, you know, I don't get to like, I'm
- 7:40Speaker 2: just in awe right now. But Brian, yesterday we heard
- 7:45Speaker 2: from both coaches. I thought it was interesting because you
- 7:47Speaker 2: do this a little bit. And Chima talked about belief,
- 7:51Speaker 2: you know how coaches. He said, you know, Australia is
- 7:54Speaker 2: all about belief, and I was thinking, you know what
- 7:57Speaker 2: I think he wants us to put that out there
- 7:59Speaker 2: and that's the messaging.
- 8:01Speaker 1: How much of is that important?
- 8:04Speaker 2: And get your players to understand that the duels that
- 8:07Speaker 2: you like to talk about, how important does that play?
- 8:09Speaker 3: I love the duel stat you know, in the first
- 8:12Speaker 3: game against Paraguay, the US, I mean they were on
- 8:17Speaker 3: the front foot from the referees whistle. And he's gonna
- 8:20Speaker 3: want to have that same type of energy, enthusiasm, winning
- 8:23Speaker 3: the duels, counter pressing. You know, he's gonna want all
- 8:26Speaker 3: of that because that's the emotion that he talks about.
- 8:29Speaker 3: That's the emotion that he wants his players to play with.
- 8:32Speaker 3: And so for him, it worked the first game. Let's
- 8:35Speaker 3: hope works the second game.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Tactically it looked like they attacked the US went wide
- 8:41Speaker 2: and Pattachino's got them cutting inside and bringing in more
- 8:45Speaker 2: players inverted wingers. Yeah, there you go. Now Australia plays
- 8:50Speaker 2: you know that five and four? How breaking down? You know,
- 8:55Speaker 2: how do you you get a six to sixth center
- 8:57Speaker 2: back who looks like you can play for the Seahawks.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Absolutely so, So what you try and do is you
- 9:03Speaker 3: try and get players in between those lines to give
- 9:06Speaker 3: them some you know, some problems, some decisions to make,
- 9:10Speaker 3: even though they have five defenders back there. You know,
- 9:12Speaker 3: you gotta figure out where the small spaces are gonna be.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Put yourself in those spaces. Kind of be quiet, precky
- 9:19Speaker 3: like to say, look, just be quiet in there. Move
- 9:21Speaker 3: your body, your body position, turning inside, turning towards a goal,
- 9:26Speaker 3: drawing players out, drawing one of the center backs out
- 9:29Speaker 3: and then having movement in behind is going.
- 9:31Speaker 1: To be critical.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Breaking down a deep block. We've had problems with it
- 9:35Speaker 3: at times. You know, the US is gonna certainly have
- 9:38Speaker 3: his challenges because Australia is a good team.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Ballina's ability, I mean to to drop to Si like
- 9:44Speaker 2: you sit.
- 9:44Speaker 1: In that channel.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Is that a surprise how he actually understands that, uh
- 9:49Speaker 2: flo uh Bologna's ability to like you said, get in
- 9:52Speaker 2: between the center backs and then bring western the tain inside.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it'll be it'll be critical that we attack with number.
- 10:00Speaker 3: You know, guys have to be you know, all engaged.
- 10:03Speaker 3: But you know you got to worry about the counter
- 10:05Speaker 3: attack as well. So I want them to play in
- 10:08Speaker 3: between lines. I want you you need a center forward
- 10:10Speaker 3: to play on either shoulder of this guy that could
- 10:14Speaker 3: be playing for the Seahawks and then and then from there.
- 10:19Speaker 3: The game's fluid and you got to take what the
- 10:21Speaker 3: game gives you.
- 10:23Speaker 2: The coach Papa said for Australia that we also have something.
- 10:26Speaker 1: For them, and he sounds.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Like he's got speed on the outside. I did see
- 10:31Speaker 2: that against Turkey exactly. So they had twenty eight of
- 10:34Speaker 2: the possession against Turkey and beat him too. No on
- 10:37Speaker 2: counter attack, that that that happens in our sport.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Yes forgot, I.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Mean especially if look, first goal has been critical in
- 10:43Speaker 3: this World Cup. Look, there's been some draws, teams have
- 10:46Speaker 3: come back, some of the favorites Belgium Versus Egypt. Egypt
- 10:49Speaker 3: scored first, Belgium had to leave it till the second half.
- 10:52Speaker 1: But if you.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Score first, you really can kind of control tempo, and
- 10:57Speaker 3: sometimes that works against you. If you score first, take
- 11:00Speaker 3: your foot off the gas. Your opponent will have more possession,
- 11:05Speaker 3: but you're actually in the lead and dictating Temple.
- 11:08Speaker 2: We're live across the street from Blomenfield, an hour and
- 11:10Speaker 2: a half or so before the US and Australia live
- 11:12Speaker 2: here on ninety three point three kjfrem in.
- 11:14Speaker 1: The World Cup.
- 11:15Speaker 2: The first men's World Cup match ever in Seattle and
- 11:18Speaker 2: where was Seattle Soccer Royalty Sounders coach Brian Smetzer. If
- 11:21Speaker 2: you want to question the text in four nine four
- 11:24Speaker 2: five one under the comma dodge, that's a text sign.
- 11:26Speaker 2: What you want to ask coach Smetzer, I'll ask him.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I'll ask you, coach, how has Mauricio puceetto tactically? You
- 11:32Speaker 2: mentioned the attitude shift, but how has he tactically changed
- 11:35Speaker 2: the Americans do? How do you notice they played differently
- 11:38Speaker 2: this national team this World Cup cycle?
- 11:40Speaker 3: Well, I don't know if they've changed tactically. They play
- 11:43Speaker 3: in a four to three three, They like to get
- 11:45Speaker 3: their wing backs higher. They sometimes build three to two,
- 11:49Speaker 3: sometimes they build three to one. Uh, there's various tactics
- 11:53Speaker 3: for their opponent. I think what he did well against
- 11:56Speaker 3: Paraguay is he nailed the tactics for that particular opponent.
- 11:59Speaker 3: And then you saw him playing with the back line
- 12:01Speaker 3: of five and some of his preseason you know, tune
- 12:05Speaker 3: up games. So we'll see what he does here.
- 12:08Speaker 2: From what you've seen of Australia, how would you attack Australia.
- 12:11Speaker 3: I'd play four three three, I'd get numbers in between
- 12:14Speaker 3: the lines. I would i wouldn't be afraid and go
- 12:17Speaker 3: back to back line of three. Now some people would say, okay,
- 12:20Speaker 3: you can do a back line of five or three
- 12:23Speaker 3: and then just match Australia up man for man, and
- 12:26Speaker 3: then you have individual duels. Their right wing back against
- 12:29Speaker 3: our left wing back. Our left wing back is pretty
- 12:32Speaker 3: darn good. Uh maybe he goes that way, but I'm
- 12:35Speaker 3: thinking he's gonna go four three three and you know,
- 12:38Speaker 3: come after him myz.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:40Speaker 2: The creativity is that something that he's brought in. Was
- 12:44Speaker 2: it the fact that a lot of these players are
- 12:46Speaker 2: playing in the other league. I mean from a you know,
- 12:48Speaker 2: a team concept. Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 3: I love some of the tricks and some of the
- 12:52Speaker 3: fancy passes, pull a stitch, ob his one v one
- 12:55Speaker 3: nobility in the in the wide channels. I mean, the
- 12:58Speaker 3: US had a complete game, and again it's it's the challenge.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I don't think they're going to rest on their laurels.
- 13:04Speaker 3: I think they're too smart for that. But you know,
- 13:07Speaker 3: they got to perform again in a in a big
- 13:09Speaker 3: match against a tough opponent.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Brian Brian Smetser.
- 13:13Speaker 2: The expectations of even the casual sports fan for the
- 13:16Speaker 2: US team is now through the roof after that four
- 13:18Speaker 2: to one win over Paraguan Friday, what's you as a
- 13:22Speaker 2: realistic expectation for where this team goes Visa VI, France, Spain, Argentina, Germany, England.
- 13:30Speaker 3: Just well, look, I'm a I'm a supporter, I'm a
- 13:34Speaker 3: US fan. Let's get first in the group. Let's get
- 13:39Speaker 3: a good draw in the round of thirty two, round
- 13:41Speaker 3: of sixteen, for sure, they could make it there. And
- 13:44Speaker 3: then after that, you know, then it's depth, it's injuries,
- 13:48Speaker 3: its form. If US goes on a good run of form, hey,
- 13:52Speaker 3: they could, they could do it.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Do it as in the final for sure.
- 13:57Speaker 3: You're putting me on the spot for sure?
- 13:59Speaker 1: Why not?
- 14:00Speaker 3: Why not the US? Yeah, the US could make it
- 14:03Speaker 3: to a final? Why not? You heard a leader believe?
- 14:06Speaker 1: Why not? On ninety three point three K JR.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Coach Brian Spetzer, I appreciate of all the things you
- 14:12Speaker 2: could be doing right now before the biggest match in
- 14:14Speaker 2: Seattle isster you're here.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Well, I'm gonna thank you for saying that. I'm gonna
- 14:18Speaker 3: go get in the stadium now and get my beer
- 14:21Speaker 3: and watch warm up and just be a fan.
- 14:23Speaker 2: You enjoy that you've earned that. Thank you, sir, Good
- 14:25Speaker 2: luck to the Sounders. We'll be watching.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Brian Smetzer, Seattle Socker Royalty live here from across the
- 14:32Speaker 2: street from Womenfield A Jimmy's on first. We're about ninety five,
- 14:35Speaker 2: one hundred minutes away from kickoff of the US and Australia.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Thanks to Brian Smetzer, we'll come back. Go to Jesson
- 14:41Speaker 2: and McIntyre from Peer fifty eight. Oh excuse me, we're
- 14:44Speaker 2: gonna stay here. Thanks Brian, appreciate you, Thank you all.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Jackson Felt saying goodbye. Alex Coptfield appreciate them.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Ma's ma's beating Murray.
- 14:56Speaker 2: He's with us again, Cascadia Sportsnet and now a big
- 14:59Speaker 2: shot Fox team.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Seattle TV soccer analysts.
- 15:02Speaker 2: What must have You've grown born in red, You've played
- 15:06Speaker 2: high school soccer here, you're a Seattle soccer guy. But
- 15:09Speaker 2: can you imagine what it is for Brian Smetzer. His family,
- 15:12Speaker 2: they've owned a soccer shop in Lake City since he
- 15:15Speaker 2: was a teenager.
- 15:17Speaker 1: He played at Nathan Hale. He's a Seattle guy.
- 15:20Speaker 2: When the Sounders in the NASL ninety four World Cup,
- 15:23Speaker 2: he attended. What this day means for Brian Smetzer, coach
- 15:27Speaker 2: of the Sounders.
- 15:27Speaker 1: I can't imagine.
- 15:28Speaker 2: And that's why I mean I honestly right now, sitting
- 15:31Speaker 2: there with Brian on this day for a second, it
- 15:33Speaker 2: I mean, I felt like twelve years old and I
- 15:35Speaker 2: wanted to do that because something that they have done
- 15:39Speaker 2: that is in terms of what people don't understand in
- 15:44Speaker 2: terms of the Smetscher family, right like, and not only
- 15:48Speaker 2: not only culturally, but also soccer. He mentioned his dad
- 15:52Speaker 2: a little baitosy and he talked about how they were pockets. Well,
- 15:56Speaker 2: let me tell you something the Lake when Walter Smetzel
- 15:59Speaker 2: created the Lake City Hawks, right he that was the
- 16:03Speaker 2: beginning of Seattle culture. And we talked about how they was.
- 16:07Speaker 2: You know, Peter Hatchrick will tell you about. There's Capitol
- 16:10Speaker 2: Hill Soccer and LVR Lauris View Ridge all those, but.
- 16:16Speaker 1: The Lake City Hawks.
- 16:17Speaker 2: When mister Schmetcher started that, the rumor was like wow,
- 16:22Speaker 2: they didn't touch the ball for the first three days
- 16:25Speaker 2: of training.
- 16:26Speaker 1: I mean, that was the rumor that was going out Seattle.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Why and so you can imagine, you know, like wow,
- 16:32Speaker 2: and then from there I think the.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Connection the Sounder had, the connection. That's Brian the connection
- 16:38Speaker 1: to the community. So then they opened up a sport house.
- 16:43Speaker 2: On Lake City Way, and and that store was where
- 16:47Speaker 2: he gave away things. And you know, kids, I know
- 16:50Speaker 2: he do massive amounts of gear to the soccer community.
- 16:54Speaker 2: He donated to the Seattle Parks and Recreation late that programming.
- 16:58Speaker 2: I remember he didn't I remember asking Brian he was
- 17:00Speaker 2: behind the counter. I didn't know, Hey, look we got
- 17:02Speaker 2: a late night program will but he's like, look here,
- 17:04Speaker 2: here's a bag of stuff. It helped us to a
- 17:06Speaker 2: late night program and that was replicated in a lot
- 17:11Speaker 2: of places because the love for the community and the
- 17:15Speaker 2: connection that soccer builds is just so now, so what yeah, what.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Does that mean to him giving everything?
- 17:24Speaker 2: You know, he plays those San Diego soccers and all
- 17:27Speaker 2: these types of mats.
- 17:28Speaker 1: But I mean it's like, yeah, I have no idea.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I can't imagine Jackson Felts with us our ninety three
- 17:33Speaker 2: point three KJRFM soccer. And I was pretty in post
- 17:36Speaker 2: game host your gods to Brian smetz are a lot.
- 17:39Speaker 2: How did you saw him there? I mean, what was
- 17:41Speaker 2: your view of Brian smetz Er and what this day means?
- 17:44Speaker 4: I think I think he's feeling the moment, and I
- 17:46Speaker 4: think we all are that this is something special. I
- 17:48Speaker 4: just got out of the stadium and I spent a
- 17:51Speaker 4: good twenty minutes just walking around the North lot and
- 17:54Speaker 4: up the steps and down the steps, and up the
- 17:55Speaker 4: steps and down the steps. This is it's hard not
- 17:58Speaker 4: to get emotional, guys. This is this is beyond anything.
- 18:03Speaker 1: That has ever touched our city.
- 18:05Speaker 4: And what's amazing is we may one up and in
- 18:08Speaker 4: a couple of weeks with a round of sixteen right again.
- 18:10Speaker 4: But I don't know, it's I'm getting chills. A tear
- 18:14Speaker 4: came in my eye as I was as I was
- 18:15Speaker 4: just looking out at the thousands upon thousands what looks
- 18:19Speaker 4: feels like millions of United States men's national team fans
- 18:23Speaker 4: in that North lot right now.
- 18:24Speaker 2: And Brazilian fans and Mexican fans and the soccer who's
- 18:27Speaker 2: just had a marsh on from across the street.
- 18:29Speaker 4: I came down here, I was here at seven thirty
- 18:30Speaker 4: this morning. I got I brought two Sounders jerseys, and
- 18:34Speaker 4: I was able to trade one of them with this
- 18:36Speaker 4: guy named Oscar with a real Madrid jersey.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Wow.
- 18:39Speaker 4: And I'm just like, I've asked a bunch of Australians
- 18:42Speaker 4: like this gentleman here, Hey, we trade trade Jerseys. Trade
- 18:44Speaker 4: scar for Sounders Jersey. None of the Australians will do it.
- 18:47Speaker 4: But the gentleman was running realm in Jersey and I'm
- 18:50Speaker 4: like trade and he's like sure, And that's the beauty
- 18:54Speaker 4: is everybody's here and he said like he said from
- 18:56Speaker 4: Madrid and then he said no camera.
- 18:58Speaker 2: So there were three thousand Australians massed in Victory Hall
- 19:03Speaker 2: across the street from the T Mobile Park and a
- 19:06Speaker 2: party that started at seven thirty more and they were
- 19:08Speaker 2: throwing inflatable kangaroos.
- 19:10Speaker 1: They were ball inside.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Then they marched from the corner First in Royal brom
- 19:15Speaker 2: Down First Avenue into the stadium. My son and my
- 19:18Speaker 2: wife are there and they're now in Victory Hall because
- 19:20Speaker 2: the OSSI's have vacated and some people can actually get.
- 19:23Speaker 1: In there now. It was wild. I posted a video
- 19:25Speaker 1: of a Twitter acts of g Bell Seattle.
- 19:28Speaker 2: There's so much more to tell you about the color
- 19:30Speaker 2: of the greatest International Sports Day in Seattle sports history.
- 19:33Speaker 2: We'll do that more next, including perhaps Jessin McIntyre from
- 19:37Speaker 2: the US March on site of Peer fifty eight or
- 19:39Speaker 2: alive from Jimmy's on First across the street from Limenfield,
- 19:42Speaker 2: an hour and back one hundred minutes or so before
- 19:45Speaker 2: US and Australia's World Cup match.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Vibe on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 19:49Speaker 5: Now back to Greg Bell and Christopher Kidd on your
- 19:52Speaker 5: Home for the Huskies, Krackett and the twelfth Man Sports
- 19:56Speaker 5: Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Welcome back Reggel Show.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Christopher can live because Jimmy's on First across the street
- 20:08Speaker 2: from Loomenfield. We are ninety minutes away from kickoff of
- 20:11Speaker 2: US and Australia Group state match in the World Cup,
- 20:14Speaker 2: the first ever US World Cup match in the Pacific Northwest.
- 20:19Speaker 2: And Man, we just had Brian Smetzer on across the
- 20:21Speaker 2: street from the stadium here at Woomenfield, a Jimmy's, and
- 20:24Speaker 2: he said, I asked him, what's a fair expectation. He said,
- 20:27Speaker 2: if Byking the US can get the win today over
- 20:30Speaker 2: the Australians, which would put him in control of the
- 20:33Speaker 2: group to get a favorable round to thirty two matchup
- 20:35Speaker 2: against a third place team, which would mean if they
- 20:38Speaker 2: win the group, they would be in the round of
- 20:40Speaker 2: sixteen match here in Seattle, then July sixth, then he
- 20:46Speaker 2: says they could go to the final. That's what he said.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Brian Smiths said they'd go to the final. Breaking news
- 20:51Speaker 2: from the pitch. Christian Polissic is out. He will not
- 20:56Speaker 2: play today because of the calf stream. We'll see if
- 20:59Speaker 2: that means guh Raina starts pas Vina Marrer I would
- 21:03Speaker 2: I would think that means Grena, who came on from
- 21:05Speaker 2: Polistic in the second half in Inglewood and the four
- 21:08Speaker 2: to one victory of Paaraguy, scored that really majestic goal
- 21:10Speaker 2: at the end outside of his left foot.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I think Gioorina slides in there.
- 21:15Speaker 2: What do you think they do with Christian Ballistic now
- 21:17Speaker 2: out real quickly before we go to Jessin No, absolutely,
- 21:19Speaker 2: I think so because of you know, similar pace and
- 21:22Speaker 2: kind of the guy and to your point, kind of
- 21:25Speaker 2: he's got that swagger going on and you know energy
- 21:28Speaker 2: for energy is critical, So I think Raina is the
- 21:31Speaker 2: most obvious choice right now. So it won't be easy
- 21:35Speaker 2: to beat the Soccers without their best player.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Christian Polistic who's out today, had not trained all week.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Jessamine McIntyre has been down at Pier fifty eight at
- 21:44Speaker 2: the Late Waterfront Park. That's where the US fans had
- 21:47Speaker 2: their gathering and then march on.
- 21:49Speaker 1: I think Marshaan Lynch was down there.
- 21:51Speaker 2: I was told Jessin McIntyre, how are you, ma'am and
- 21:54Speaker 2: what did you see?
- 21:55Speaker 1: And what are you seeing?
- 21:55Speaker 6: Down there was a marsh On march on, that's for sure,
- 22:01Speaker 6: and oddly enough, Jameis Winston was also a part of
- 22:04Speaker 6: the whole kicking off of this march on.
- 22:07Speaker 7: But we also best to see the men in Blazers
- 22:09Speaker 7: Live podcast. Marsh On was not exactly radio friendly and
- 22:16Speaker 7: he was everything of them wouldn't expected tend to be dumb.
- 22:20Speaker 7: Button hopefully was ready. But I got to tell you,
- 22:22Speaker 7: it's not like one hundred thousand people. I walked about
- 22:25Speaker 7: six blocks with them halfway to lumin from here, I
- 22:29Speaker 7: would say, just judging by by my eyesight, but it
- 22:32Speaker 7: was unbelievably great, great energy. There was no over rowdiness
- 22:39Speaker 7: as we've seen in some cities when it comes to
- 22:41Speaker 7: very exciting games. It was a lot of supporting and
- 22:45Speaker 7: you know, I just spent some time in Australia. I
- 22:48Speaker 7: know that our Australian friends are usually in good humor
- 22:53Speaker 7: and good manner, and there were some of them down
- 22:55Speaker 7: here too. This was very very USA driven obviously, but
- 22:59Speaker 7: they were enjoying everything as well. And I just think
- 23:03Speaker 7: that the atmosphere is exactly what Seattle does right. And
- 23:07Speaker 7: you know, we saw it with the twenty fourteen Super
- 23:09Speaker 7: Bowl parade, where you know, people just do things right.
- 23:14Speaker 7: And I just noticed how great the the energy was
- 23:19Speaker 7: down here. Everybody's in it together, people bumping into each other,
- 23:22Speaker 7: crawling all over each other, and it's just an oops,
- 23:25Speaker 7: I'm sorry, let's go have fun together. I really think
- 23:28Speaker 7: Seattle's going to show out, and those visiting to Seattle
- 23:32Speaker 7: from outside of the area are going to show up
- 23:34Speaker 7: really well. I'm really proud of what I've seen so
- 23:37Speaker 7: far in the six hours I gets out here.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Jessa man I mentioned earlier this week, this is unlike
- 23:42Speaker 2: NFL or a Seahawks crowd, where there's a tribalism and
- 23:45Speaker 2: the secularism of Seattle versus San Francisco forty nine, or
- 23:49Speaker 2: fans getting beer pored on them, or the Rams fans hated,
- 23:52Speaker 2: or the Cowboys fans not welcome here. Here, it's everybody
- 23:56Speaker 2: for them. Okay, I'm okay, you're Okay, as a vibe
- 23:59Speaker 2: down here. Yes, everyone in America's for the US Soccer
- 24:03Speaker 2: Ruse are partying with the US right in this bar,
- 24:06Speaker 2: right across the street of Victory Hall where the Soccer
- 24:08Speaker 2: RHUs party was in their march on into the stadium.
- 24:11Speaker 2: About three thousand people were inside Victory Hall and had
- 24:14Speaker 2: that bar and grill before the Marita has had to
- 24:16Speaker 2: cap it at three thousands of the fire code. But
- 24:21Speaker 2: if you can describe just the vibe of soccer and
- 24:24Speaker 2: international soccer in the World Cup that you as you
- 24:27Speaker 2: see it as opposed to what a normal sporting event
- 24:30Speaker 2: in Seattle, say Major League Baseball, the NFL is.
- 24:35Speaker 7: Yeah, I think you described it really perfectly, because this
- 24:37Speaker 7: is a global event that just happens to be local
- 24:40Speaker 7: for us. You know, it is a global event, and
- 24:42Speaker 7: I think that there is a different side now. I
- 24:46Speaker 7: you know, I played soccer growing up, and you know,
- 24:48Speaker 7: once I got to high school, I had to choose
- 24:50Speaker 7: between not volleyball and then basketball and track and stuff.
- 24:54Speaker 7: So I didn't necessarily grow up in the sport. It
- 24:56Speaker 7: just happened to have played. I don't consider myself and
- 25:00Speaker 7: I mean this out of respect for true soccer fans.
- 25:03Speaker 7: I don't consider myself as super fan, but I have
- 25:07Speaker 7: always gotten excited for the World Cup, and I think
- 25:10Speaker 7: that goes for a lot of people because we have
- 25:13Speaker 7: this embarrassment of riches of sports that we get to
- 25:16Speaker 7: watch and root for year round. And soccer isn't the
- 25:21Speaker 7: primary sport in the United States as a whole, but
- 25:26Speaker 7: it is very, very very well represented here and there
- 25:30Speaker 7: are a ton in Seattle and I love that and
- 25:33Speaker 7: I respect it, and I, like I said, even though
- 25:36Speaker 7: I'm not a huge soccer fan, because that would be
- 25:38Speaker 7: disrespectful to those who are, I love it. When I
- 25:43Speaker 7: go to a Sounders match, I have my stars. I
- 25:47Speaker 7: get very excited for it, and I think it's a
- 25:49Speaker 7: game that in the true atmosphere of the environment, they
- 25:55Speaker 7: do it very very well. And I just think today's
- 25:57Speaker 7: going to be nuts. I ain't a very I think not.
- 26:01Speaker 7: I mean it a very good way.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Jessmond mcadart down a Peer fifty eight with the US
- 26:05Speaker 2: March on Fans March, you mentioned one hundred thousand people
- 26:07Speaker 2: that stadium where we hold six.
- 26:09Speaker 7: Well, that's what it felt like. That is what it
- 26:10Speaker 7: felt like. Okay, Well, I know there's only about seventy
- 26:14Speaker 7: thousand who go in the stadium without march felt like
- 26:17Speaker 7: it went on throughout the entire city.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Are there tickets available down there? This morning?
- 26:22Speaker 2: When I woke up on the secondary ticket sites, the
- 26:24Speaker 2: price was down to twelve hundred dollars to get in.
- 26:27Speaker 1: It's now up to twenty four hundred. For the few
- 26:29Speaker 1: sites that still have availability. Are their tickets available? People
- 26:34Speaker 1: hawking tickets on the street.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Somebody listening might want to come down if they're near Seattle,
- 26:38Speaker 2: to come downtown and see if our ticket's even available
- 26:40Speaker 2: down there.
- 26:42Speaker 7: I don't think so. I didn't see anyone, and usually
- 26:44Speaker 7: you'll see that in the areas that we were at.
- 26:47Speaker 7: I didn't see any scalpers out there whatsoever. I did
- 26:53Speaker 7: not see anyone I had got tickets. I need tickets,
- 26:56Speaker 7: literally nothing. And that's probably the first time at any
- 27:00Speaker 7: event that I've been to that I haven't seen that.
- 27:02Speaker 2: There have been people walking up and down First Avenue
- 27:05Speaker 2: South right outside of here Jimmy's and Royal Brahm and
- 27:08Speaker 2: the Mariners Stadium with I need ticket signs, but they're
- 27:11Speaker 2: all I need tickets. There are nobody that has I
- 27:13Speaker 2: have ticket signs walking up and down the street, Jessamine,
- 27:17Speaker 2: I person. Yeah, you get to come in. Where do
- 27:20Speaker 2: you go from here to watch the match? Oh?
- 27:24Speaker 7: Well, you know what, I am going to head of
- 27:26Speaker 7: the station. Now, what time is a LA ten thirty
- 27:28Speaker 7: in the morning. I've been half here since seven. I
- 27:31Speaker 7: am going to come back to the station and then
- 27:35Speaker 7: we're going to I'm going down to do the Mariner's
- 27:39Speaker 7: street game.
- 27:40Speaker 2: So the Mariners tell me that there are only single
- 27:43Speaker 2: tickets available tonight for what is Fireworks night, and they
- 27:46Speaker 2: expect those to set up very soon.
- 27:48Speaker 1: There're gonna be one hundred Yeah.
- 27:50Speaker 7: I think there's a lot of double dippers like people
- 27:52Speaker 7: are doing bold.
- 27:53Speaker 2: One hundred and ten thousand people in the stadium district
- 27:56Speaker 2: in downtown here today in Seattle for one of the
- 27:59Speaker 2: best sports days.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I appreciated, Jessman, enjoy.
- 28:06Speaker 7: Your day, all right, thanks Dug.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Jessmin McIntyre from Peer fifty eight.
- 28:14Speaker 2: When we come back, Maz Vine and I are going
- 28:16Speaker 2: to talk about the impact of Christian Polistic not playing today.
- 28:19Speaker 1: We'll talk briefly about the Mariners opening their three.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Game series against Boston tonight after Julio Rodriguez sat out
- 28:27Speaker 2: yesterday's series ending win and at eleven thirty we'll go
- 28:30Speaker 2: to the pregame show, a national WES national Fox Sports
- 28:35Speaker 2: broadcast simulcast here on ninety three point three before the match.
- 28:38Speaker 2: You can hear it live. This is the US Australia
- 28:42Speaker 2: pregame show by from Jimmy's on ninety three point three
- 28:45Speaker 2: kJ RFM.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Lo Gregbelt Show.
- 28:53Speaker 2: With Christopher Kid Live from Jimmy's on First across the
- 28:56Speaker 2: street from Loomenfield, where we talked to Brian Smith to
- 29:00Speaker 2: the top of the hour. The Sounders coach and Seattle
- 29:02Speaker 2: Soccer Royalty has been dreaming about this day his whole life,
- 29:06Speaker 2: the world coming to his stadium, his pits from downtown Seattle, Liominfield, US.
- 29:10Speaker 1: In Australia playing a new and kickoff French.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Metzer told us Masna mary A that he thinks the
- 29:17Speaker 2: United States could advance not only to the round of eight,
- 29:21Speaker 2: but maybe the semifinals, maybe the final, and then get
- 29:24Speaker 2: a favorable draft for this round to thirty two, which
- 29:27Speaker 2: a win today would pretty much I'm sure why not
- 29:31Speaker 2: in those ways exact words, right, why not? And he
- 29:33Speaker 2: says it's a tournament because it's deep and injuries can
- 29:38Speaker 2: can take a you know, a role in this thing,
- 29:41Speaker 2: and then fatigue and all those things at each game
- 29:44Speaker 2: as we all know, whether it's you know, if you
- 29:48Speaker 2: look at the NCAA right tournament.
- 29:50Speaker 1: His tactical stuff also plays into that.
- 29:53Speaker 2: So and speaking of injuries, Maz, we got word in
- 29:57Speaker 2: about twenty minutes to the Christian Polisic will not play
- 30:00Speaker 2: Team USA.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Sam. How's that change him?
- 30:03Speaker 7: Uh?
- 30:03Speaker 1: Dramatically. I think he's gonna go one of two ways.
- 30:07Speaker 2: I'm seeing some people are saying Ricardo Pepe will will
- 30:10Speaker 2: step in and then.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Then he'll go to Well, I mean the thing is, you.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Know, we can get online all we want until they
- 30:19Speaker 2: roll out the eleven. But if those with Pepe, I
- 30:22Speaker 2: think that he would change and have two strikers up front, right, So,
- 30:26Speaker 2: I you know, that seems a little far fetched at
- 30:29Speaker 2: that point, but I think to what we talked about,
- 30:32Speaker 2: Giorna seems to would be the obvious choice if he's
- 30:36Speaker 2: going to keep this lineup, because what you get from Ana,
- 30:39Speaker 2: he means the closest technical.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Ability and energy that's there and direct runs. He's got
- 30:45Speaker 1: that guy to take on one b one maybe two
- 30:48Speaker 1: to one. The other one is Brendan.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Aaronson he's more of a workhorse right there with high
- 30:55Speaker 2: pressing a billion direct attacking and and he's more of
- 30:59Speaker 2: a defensive piece. Another option would be Tim tim Ware
- 31:04Speaker 2: and yeah, I mean he offers more. He's a natural
- 31:08Speaker 2: winger because the one thing where they are they don't
- 31:12Speaker 2: have a lot of depth in the United States, natural
- 31:14Speaker 2: depth is that winger position. So it's all really going
- 31:18Speaker 2: to depend on what, you know, which way that he's
- 31:23Speaker 2: gonna go that him being.
- 31:26Speaker 1: You know, I'm uncle sam Usa top had you gotta
- 31:33Speaker 1: love it.
- 31:34Speaker 2: I mean, it's uh, international soccer nationalism and yet with
- 31:38Speaker 2: an understanding that it's all for fun and everything else,
- 31:42Speaker 2: right that not to cross over that line and enjoy
- 31:45Speaker 2: the the experience. So so those are kind of you know,
- 31:49Speaker 2: I don't think uh Sebastian would go in there and uh,
- 31:54Speaker 2: because then you change a whole midfield Sebastian culture. Sebastian
- 31:58Speaker 2: Burkholder had been starting they started last NTCH instead of
- 32:00Speaker 2: Christian roll Don on the outside, and Brian Schmitz was
- 32:03Speaker 2: saying he'd be interested to see if roll Don gets
- 32:05Speaker 2: a bigger role today his sounders are because of Christian
- 32:09Speaker 2: Polistic not being there Revive but Jimmy's on first where
- 32:12Speaker 2: they're a mix of soccer rus and American Outlaws or
- 32:16Speaker 2: US soccer fans, and they're Sasquats, the Sonics old mascot
- 32:20Speaker 2: walking behind us. There's guys wearing Michael Dixon Seahawks jerseys,
- 32:24Speaker 2: the Australian punter for the Seahawks.
- 32:27Speaker 1: This isn't the only thing going on downtown tonight.
- 32:29Speaker 2: At seven ten, the Mariners play the Red Sox in
- 32:32Speaker 2: a fireworks night game. And I had a Mariner's official
- 32:35Speaker 2: tell me over at Victory Hall about an hour ago
- 32:38Speaker 2: that there are only single tickets available. They're expecting that
- 32:40Speaker 2: to be sold out by the afternoons. So we're talking
- 32:43Speaker 2: one hundred and ten thousand sports fans paid attendees, not
- 32:47Speaker 2: counting the ones who aren't getting in the stadiums who
- 32:49Speaker 2: are down here this afternoon for the US and Australia
- 32:52Speaker 2: World Cup and then a Marinas in Red Sox. The
- 32:54Speaker 2: Mariners yesterday got three runs in the first inning. Cold
- 32:59Speaker 2: Emerson's two runs in the first inning a double bike.
- 33:02Speaker 2: It's gonna make double bike. Cole Young in a two
- 33:05Speaker 2: run single by cold Emerson, the two Youngsters middle infeaters.
- 33:08Speaker 2: The three runs in the first inning, and that's all
- 33:11Speaker 2: they needed because Brian Wu was outstanding seven scoreless headings,
- 33:15Speaker 2: three hits, aout, nine strakeouts for a six win. The
- 33:18Speaker 2: Mariners are two games up for five hundred, which in
- 33:21Speaker 2: the America League West is good enough for a one
- 33:22Speaker 2: and a half game lead over the age. I mentioned
- 33:25Speaker 2: tonight Fireworks night for the season over against the Red Sox.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Bryce Miller is starting tonight. They got a night game
- 33:30Speaker 2: tomorrow night the Mariners do against the Red Sox. Emerson
- 33:33Speaker 2: Hancock starts at seven to ten game Tomorrow night Sunday
- 33:36Speaker 2: the home standing series finale. Logan Gilbert is gonna start
- 33:40Speaker 2: a one ten afternoon game on Sunday.
- 33:42Speaker 1: If you didn't see.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Also around sports news, the club Gary Payton got a street.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Named after him in his hometown of Oakland.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Yesterday, OZ the Seattle SuperSonics twitter x page reported quote
- 33:54Speaker 2: drivers are already reporting full court pressure and trash talk
- 33:58Speaker 2: at every intersection of Gary Peyton Way in Oakland. Don't
