- 2:15I mentioned, it is day two of the State boys basketball tournament at the
- 2:19Kytle Seeming Convention Center. We'll talk about that just a little bit. Plus
- 2:21Republicans strategist Greg Thomas we'll be stopping by as well. Always interesting to get
- 2:27mister Thomas's take on things. Always interested in talking to this person too.
- 2:31It's our good friend from Bridge Valley, doctor Casey Sachs After Sacks. Good
- 2:35morning, Welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave. How are you
- 2:37today? I'm doing fine, Thank you for being here. You're here via
- 2:39the Big Lee Pigly Wiggly Hotline this morning. You guys just did something on
- 2:45Monday, aptly named It's called Meet the Majors Monday. Now, as I
- 2:50understand this, each week you take to your social media and whatnot and you
- 2:54talk about some of the majors that you offer at Bridge Valley. So let's
- 2:58get into some of those different majors that are off for just a few great
- 3:01yes. So we try really hard to help people in the community understand some
- 3:06of the offerings that are available here at Bridge Valley. On Monday, we
- 3:09focused on Highway Engineering Technology. It's actually a really cool program. The Department
- 3:15of Transportation started it with us. So when people are interested in working on
- 3:21highways, bridge maintenance, all kinds of repair, they go through our program.
- 3:25And most of the employees from the Department of Transportation are actually who are
- 3:30in the program, although anyone is welcome, and that's what we focus on.
- 3:35How do we fix highways And there's a lot of that that is going
- 3:38on around the state and a lot of the needs to be done. And
- 3:40you travel a lot around the state as do I. I think you know
- 3:44exactly what I'm talking about. Doctor, That's true. I mean, we
- 3:46all hate those potholes. And this is a really dedicated group who are thinking
- 3:52about the civil engineering that really goes behind road maintenance and construction so that we
- 3:57can have great roads and do those improvement projects well. And it's one of
- 4:00those things that we talk about AI all the time. I don't know that
- 4:04that is going to be replaced by AI. There's always going to be potholes,
- 4:09and there's always going to be drivers that complained about them, like you,
- 4:12like me. So this is something that's always going to be needed.
- 4:15It's almost like a guaranteed jobs. I would think that's a great point.
- 4:18Even if Google is driving your car, it's still a car on a road.
- 4:21Somebody's going to be complaining about it. I don't Yeah, now you
- 4:26have a big Founder's Day gala, come it up, and I understand you
- 4:29were telling me that that's sold out. Now it is. We're so excited.
- 4:32It's the first time we've ever done something like this before, and it's
- 4:35our ten year anniversary. We're so we're having a big celebration at the Clay
- 4:40Center and we're sold out. So we were thrilled. Thank you to the
- 4:44community for all the support and outpouring. It should be a really fun night.
- 4:48Yes, I'm sure it will be. And I've also noticed that you
- 4:53guys been taking the show on the road lately. I saw where you were
- 4:55going to kill last week. Talk about the importance of taking the message and
- 4:59the a bridge value out to the people, so to speak. So my
- 5:02team is incredible. They're really committed to getting out to businesses and to schools
- 5:08as our main way of just getting the message out. So the same way
- 5:12you mentioned we talked about our majors, we want to do that face to
- 5:15face that we found the best way really to get the message out is to
- 5:17talk to potential students and to their families and to really help people understand what
- 5:23are the jobs that could be available if they take advantage of these opportunities.
- 5:27And so you're exactly right. Last week we had a team out at Okhill.
- 5:30Sometimes we take students with us, sometimes we take employers with us.
- 5:35The FAME partnership has been amazing at that the employers from the we've talked about
- 5:40FAME before, the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education, both Toyota and NEWCRE frequently
- 5:46so staff out to schools and two companies to help tell people about advanced manufacturing
- 5:53technology. But we try and do it for all of our programs. You
- 5:56know, you think you might want to be an accountant. Let's get you
- 5:58to talk to somebody who's in account so that we can really help you understand
- 6:01the value of the program. Here at Bridge Valley tat to doctor Casey Sacks
- 6:05of Bridge Valley. This morning, the Dave Island Show in five eighty Live
- 6:08is brought to you apart by Husband's Pizza. Get an eighteen inch Pepperoni pizza
- 6:12and a pizza bowl only twenty two ninety nine. Find your nearest Hussans at
- 6:15Husband's Pizza dot com for delivery, pickup or for dying in. Along those
- 6:18same lines, Doctor Sachson, we'll talk about outreach that you do with high
- 6:23schools. Now. I know frequently you'll host high school students on campus for
- 6:27various activities, giving them an opportunity to get no Bridge Valley a little bit
- 6:31better? How do those generally go? Gosh? So we love having high
- 6:36school students. Anything that we can do to help people really understand what does
- 6:41that outreach? What does it look like on campus? We frequently host groups
- 6:45here on campus. So one of the things that students particularly like is the
- 6:48new nursing wing. They can go in and see the mannequins and some of
- 6:51the simulations. We have one mannequin that can give birth. It really looks
- 6:56like a hospital wing. So bringing in groups of students to see what authentic
- 7:00learning environment this is has been a really great strategy, and high school counselors
- 7:04frequently like to bring groups of students here on field trips because it's a good
- 7:09way to help students think about college and think about their future. And you
- 7:13don't have to travel hours and hours away to be able to do that.
- 7:16Any chance, you could bring that mannequin that can actually give birth into the
- 7:19studio next time you hear because Ryan and I want to see that. Oh,
- 7:21you can come visit Dave. She's really gross. Well, I guess
- 7:26the whole childbirth thing is I guess, But that's beside the point. You
- 7:30recently did a transfer fair. What is that? So we have some really
- 7:35terrific articulation agreements with various four year institutions in the area and across the state,
- 7:43and so we try and bring those groups in to really talk to students.
- 7:46So we set up our main atrium as a fair environment and advertise to
- 7:50students to help them know, you know, if you're thinking you want to
- 7:54transfer to marshal or to WVU or to State, come here and talk to
- 7:59some DeFore one of those institutions and to really get an idea of Gosh,
- 8:03if I'm in the Highway Engineering Technology program right now. And I might want
- 8:07to study to complete a bachelor's degree online? Who has that? How do
- 8:11I get in? What is it that I need to do? And so
- 8:15having those transfer fears provides all those people in the same space at the same
- 8:20time, So it makes it easier for students to talk about their options and
- 8:22think about what they might want to do next. I want to close by
- 8:26talking about the acronym, if you will, that probably puts fear into the
- 8:31hearts of parents and grandparents and students, and that is FASSA. Yeah,
- 8:37what exactly I mean? We hear this term in the news, and I'm
- 8:41not so sure it was such the big thing back when when I was in
- 8:45college one hundred years ago that it is now. But explain what FASA is
- 8:48and what is all what's all the I don't want to say controversy, but
- 8:50what are all the issues with FASA going on right now? And third part
- 8:54is what's Bridge Valley doing to kind of help out? So the FASTPA is
- 8:58the free Application for Federal Student Aid. It's the federal paperwork that students and
- 9:05families fill out to get access to federal funds that help you pay for college.
- 9:09It went through. Interestingly, it went through a simplification process. The
- 9:15federal government tried to make the form easier, and so what you've been hearing
- 9:18about in the news is that the form isn't easier. In changing it,
- 9:24it's changed all of the kind of back side coding, the information that goes
- 9:28from the federal government to schools about how much money students should be getting.
- 9:33And I don't think the federal government appreciated what a big lift changing the form
- 9:39was going to be and the impact that that would have on families. And
- 9:43so the it side of it has broken several times. They've had to do
- 9:46revisions. It's not been a smooth rollout, and so what you're hearing in
- 9:50the news is that families are really frustrated because you'll get on that federal website
- 9:56to try and fill out the form. And it was frustrating from me when
- 10:00I was a student, because my parents didn't go to college and we didn't
- 10:03know how to fill out that form, and so it felt a little scary
- 10:05anyway, because it's about money and it helps you figure out how much you're
- 10:09going to be able to afford to go to college. And so it already
- 10:13is kind of scary, and then to have the website break and to have
- 10:16it not work right, it's just very frustrating. So good hearing about Okay,
- 10:22well, that's what I'm going to say, because I've seen a simple
- 10:24scroll through social media of parents or grandparents saying that they're just, you know,
- 10:30almost literally pulling their hair out over this thing. And I just didn't
- 10:33know exactly what that was all about. But you do offer help in that
- 10:35department, So we offer help, and so I think that part's really important.
- 10:39But we're also your most affordable option for higher education. And so if
- 10:43families are frustrated and thinking, gosh, I don't know what we'll do for
- 10:48the fall, because the fast will lets you gauge how much federal support and
- 10:52how much loan support you'll get to be able to go to school. If
- 10:56you're thinking, gosh, I don't know, please don't give up. Come
- 11:00Bridge Valley for a year and then transfer. We just talked about the transfer
- 11:03there. We're the most We truly are the most affordable option in the area,
- 11:07and it's a great opportunity to come here and then go to Marshall,
- 11:11or come here and go to State or go to WV. We have transfer
- 11:15agreements with all of them, and so rather than continuing to pull your hair
- 11:18out, they take a deep breath and just say, I know, my
- 11:22kid can live at home for a year and they'll go to Bridge Valley and
- 11:24then we'll transfer the credits and it's going to be okay, all right,
- 11:28Doctor Sachs, It's always a pleasure to talk to you. We will talk
- 11:31again soon. Thanks a lot. Great to hear from you, Dave.

- 17:27to cover the mac turnament up in Cleveland for Ohio University. He's the colored
- 17:32guy. He's just all over the university. I like you see. I
- 17:36like him, but I like it because you're calm sometimes most most of the
- 17:41time, all the time, not all the time, all right, So
- 17:45let's get to it, greg The legelative session wrapped up Saturday night. We'll
- 17:49get into some specifics a little bit later on with overall thoughts. If you
- 17:52had to give it a letter grade, Gregory, what would it be?
- 17:55Uh, I'd say a ce. It started out it it was probably less
- 18:02than a sea, and I think they kind of saved it at the end
- 18:04to get a handful of things done. H you know, we talked about
- 18:08this last time. It was just a really tough year. I mean you
- 18:10had a ton you know, you had from the governor to you know,
- 18:15attorney general and treasurer and all the you know, judiciary chairs and everybody was
- 18:18running for something else. And and not that I think that they were.
- 18:22You know, some people were probably doing things to help their campaigns. I
- 18:26think a lot of it. It was just they just weren't as focused on
- 18:30what needed to be done. But it doesn't that normally happened during a campaign
- 18:34years, not to this degree. I mean, you know, I think
- 18:38you I think you must always have it. But look, we've had other
- 18:41campaign years before since the Republicans took over, and they weren't this bad.
- 18:45I think this was just there was a ton of that. You know,
- 18:48we sort of were at the end of the checklist of really big you know,
- 18:52up until this year, you know, we had been the most conservative
- 18:56legislature in the country session here. You know, I think if you probably
- 19:02average them all out, we still are. But this year here was definitely
- 19:07definitely not a very conservative session. Really, I don't think so. I
- 19:15mean they not the things that passed, not the things that passed, I
- 19:22mean government pay raise, what's conservative about that? You know, the the
- 19:27the the conservative things we did get done were really watered down, you know,
- 19:33so I it wasn't look but again that's why I say a C.
- 19:37I mean, I just don't think it's it's not an F where it's like,
- 19:40oh my gosh, we got to go elect all new people. It's
- 19:41not a you know, d's like just really really poor. This was like
- 19:47some stuff we're done. But it's definitely not an A and definitely, you
- 19:49know, to me, it's just kind of like, all right, we
- 19:52didn't do a lot of harm. We didn't. We did a little bit
- 19:55of good. You know, I'm hopeful that, you know, I'm hopeful
- 20:00we don't have sessions like this very often. Were you surprised Greg that some
- 20:04of these and again the sexy stuff is what makes the news. I mean,
- 20:08that's just the way it is. I mean, the majority of things
- 20:11that are passed of a legislature are bipartisan, you know, but that a
- 20:15lot of that doesn't get talked about because it's not it's not click bait,
- 20:18you know, it's not it's not what people want to talk about, budgets
- 20:21and things of that nature. But what got a lot of the attention was
- 20:23Women's Bill of Rights or whatever they called it, the Library Obscenity Bill,
- 20:26and all none of that stuff passed. Well, it goes back to what
- 20:30we talked about last time. We have we really need an organized social conservative
- 20:36organization in West Virginia because I think if you would have gone and grabbed like
- 20:41three of those things and written real bills and found out like what other states
- 20:47did and done that professionally, you would have passed those three bills. The
- 20:51problem was there weren't three of them. There were fifty of them, and
- 20:55they were ham handed. They was not much thought put into them. It
- 20:57was just, you know, every buddy had an idea. You know,
- 21:00somebody had been watching Fox News and came up with an idea and wrote it
- 21:03down on a napkin and took it down to bill drafting, and a bill
- 21:07came up and we debated it, and all those bills made it out of
- 21:10House Judiciary, and then after it got out of there, everybody looked at
- 21:12it and was like, what is this? What is this even supposed to
- 21:15do? What are we doing this? I'm a legislator. I was talking
- 21:18to a legislator who shall remain named us earlier this morning and he told me,
- 21:22he said, look, we know a lot of these things aren't going
- 21:25to pass, but we just like it to be seen that we're working on
- 21:32it. I just I guess, I guess that's just people that aren't used
- 21:37to getting things done in their life. You know, like who would do
- 21:41that? Who would just spin wheels? I mean, you have sixty days,
- 21:44I have an agenda, have something you want to do, go get
- 21:47it done. I mean we had done that, and you know we've done
- 21:49that in previous sessions. I mean why you know, why do that?
- 21:53Now? You think the sessions too long? No? I what I like,
- 21:57I tell you what that you know, there's some states that do it
- 22:00where they do a ninety day session sixty or ninety days one year, and
- 22:04then the next year they only do a thirty day session, just focused on
- 22:07a two year budget. And I would really like that. And really,
- 22:11I mean, as best I understand it, Greg, all they're required to
- 22:15do is get the budget. Yeah, I mean they don't have to do
- 22:17anything else. Well that I would have given that a bee. The budget
- 22:22you mean, I mean no, if we have just done a bud,
- 22:23just done the budget, I'd give them that a bee rather than the sea
- 22:27work that they did. I mean, but look, you know, the
- 22:30unemployment the thing was as good. You know, it's more of a re
- 22:36employment now rather than just unemployment. I mean, we have to decide what
- 22:40we want to be as a state. You know, we're going to be
- 22:41the kind of place where people come and work and we and we're it's an
- 22:45environment where people come and can have careers and have real jobs and be able
- 22:48to provide for their families. Or do we want to go back to yesteryear
- 22:52and be the kind of place that says, hey, we'll take care of
- 22:55you, will give you a very minor subsistence living and you don't have to
- 22:59do anything. And I think that the reemployment bill gets toward that. We
- 23:03had fixes with brim. You know, we passed some legal reform stuff that
- 23:07was good. They eliminated the tax on social security. You know, there
- 23:14was some prescription drug stuff with pei A that was good. You know.
- 23:18So gun parts are no longer taxed. I mean, I don't know if
- 23:22you knew about that or not. Gun parts. Gun parts Apparently we were
- 23:26already not taxing guns. But for the people that assemble their own you know,
- 23:32AR fifteen's and stuff, their parts were taxed. So that's no longer
- 23:34tax you know. There was there were two amendments actually, you know I
- 23:38talked about this before. You know, there were two amendments to put an
- 23:41amendment on the ballot. There were two bills to put an amendment, two
- 23:45resolutions to put an amendment on the ballot. One of them made it through,
- 23:48which was the Youth in Asia one. The one that didn't was the
- 23:52one that I was associated with. That the one about the non citizen voting
- 23:55bill, which was a group that we had worked with and brought in here
- 24:00and it was actually the thing that was being debated at midnight. Then it
- 24:04just sort of run out of time. Clock ran out. Yeah, So
- 24:07hopefully that'll be Uh. I think that's any because you uh, we had
- 24:11we had an especially from the National Organization. The National Organization was in and
- 24:15you know, we had almost overwhelming support for it. Uh. It was
- 24:18just one of those, you know, things that gets caught up. There
- 24:21was sort of a clerical error at the end and caused it to sort of
- 24:25come up last minute. But we're pretty hopeful that that's going to be on
- 24:27the May Special Session call. And look some of these other things that were
- 24:32brought up that ran out of time, you know, given that they're going
- 24:34to have to come back and deal with sort of the supplemental budget. You
- 24:37know, I think I think the May Special Session call could have some could
- 24:41actually be kind of interesting. I think there could be some some important things
- 24:44on there. Twenty one minutes or I'm sorry, twenty nine minutes away from
- 24:48Tampa, Dave alland showing five AYE Live broad to part by General Hardware of
- 24:51Windfield and Milton and General Lumber of Windfield. Whether you're getting ready or for
- 24:55a big project for the warm weather months, or whatever you need, they
- 24:57can help locally own and operate. General Hardware and General Lumber is a general
- 25:02hardware wv dot com. Has greg has too much been made of potential divisions
- 25:07within the Republican Party, Because here's what. I didn't spend a whole lot
- 25:11of time at the Capitol this year, but from what I what I in
- 25:14talking to people that were there and talking to people kind of off the record,
- 25:18I heard a lot of well, the House and the Senate just don't
- 25:22get along, and there was some rumbling about the House Speaker Handshaw spending too
- 25:26much time talking to the to Democrats, which I think that's what you're supposed
- 25:30to do, is you're supposed to kind of work these things out. But
- 25:33we have a lot of people with this mindset that if you're talking with the
- 25:37other side, you're the enemy. Uh So that's something we got to give
- 25:40by. But do you think there's too much made a division within the Republican
- 25:42Party? Uh? There obviously is some division. I just think the people
- 25:47that are being divisive are there's not that many of them. They're just very
- 25:52vocal, right, They're the ones that always run to Facebook. They're the
- 25:55ones that you know, go on the podcasts and talk all the time.
- 25:59So I think it, you know, I definitely think there are there There
- 26:02are divisions as there would be when you have these mega majorities that we have.
- 26:07I just think it's it seems worse than it is because there are so
- 26:11many there are the ones that are being divisive or just very loud. And
- 26:18so look, I think some of those people are going to be will lose
- 26:23their elections, right because some of them, they're not up there to pass
- 26:26bills. Man, They're really just up there to get attention. And I
- 26:29think you know, maybe the other people that sort of are on those Facebook
- 26:34pages like that. But if you're you know, in if you're in Upshur
- 26:40County, how can you possibly want Robert Carnes to be your senator? Right?
- 26:42I mean he's not on it. You know, they's been taken off
- 26:45of the committees. You know, every bill that he would bring up would
- 26:48fail. He's never really passed anything ever. Like, you know, if
- 26:52you're from there, why would you want that to be your senator? And
- 26:56so I think I think there's a couple of people on the House side like
- 26:57that too. I think that Henry Dillon Dude from Wayne County's probably in that
- 27:00situation and in a few others. But you know, so I there is
- 27:07division, it's just you know, you've just got some really vocal people that
- 27:11honestly aren't trying to pass bills. They just you know, everybody does that
- 27:15for a different reason, right. I mean, there's one hundred and thirty
- 27:18four people there, So there's one hundred and thirty four different reasons or why
- 27:21you run for legislature. But you're always going to have a handful that just
- 27:25want to be heard. You know, some people like the sound of their
- 27:27voice more than others. That's that's very true. And so and that's and
- 27:32looking and as you know, I mean I do a lot of candidate recruitment
- 27:36in the state. I probably do more than almost anybody else. And and
- 27:37so you know, I just I'm just sensitive to that. And I know
- 27:42it when I'm sitting there talking to somebody, and I'm always a little hesitant
- 27:45if somebody is just like you can tell too, right, I Mean,
- 27:48it's not like it's there, They're not even really trying to hide it.
- 27:52It's just like I want to say this or I want to do that.
- 27:55I'd rather have somebody say I want to make sure I'm heard, or I'd
- 27:59rather have somebody say I want to make sure this gets done, rather than
- 28:00I want to make sure I've heard, and we have a handful of people
- 28:04now, I just want to be heard. And it says something to where
- 28:07we are as a society. We're not going to play amateur psychologist. But
- 28:11everybody's got social media, and everybody's a star, and everybody's an influencer.
- 28:15And there's certain people that in the legislature, and they're some I'm sure of
- 28:18the few Democrats are there, there's probably a few on that side too,
- 28:22that it's all about them and it's not about the greater good. Tex says
- 28:26the session needed the presence of a governor who's not scared to veto the dumber
- 28:29bills. Instead, we get an absentee governor campaigning for US Senate. Well,
- 28:33look, anytime you're I wouldn't use the word absentee. I mean,
- 28:37it's obviously, you know, you sort of are any lame duck situation though,
- 28:41when you're you're only have so much time left, you're running for something
- 28:45else, that's just sort of you know, we're he's term limited though,
- 28:49right, I Mean, it's not something he could just say I'm going to
- 28:52run again, you know. So it's kind of a decision that was made
- 28:55for him. So I you know, look, I think he wasn't.
- 29:00Uh, I mean, he certainly had an agenda though, right, I
- 29:03mean he had an agent. I mean, you know, the governor is
- 29:04the one that was really pushing the pay raises. The governor was the one
- 29:08pushing that social security tax that got that got taken care of. So I
- 29:12mean, I you know, I think he had a decent session. But
- 29:18you know, I don't there. I do think there's a lot of people
- 29:21he doesn't. You don't really have to be there, you know what I
- 29:22mean, Like he doesn't have you know, his rule. Shouldn't you be
- 29:26greg? I mean, come on, I mean shouldn't. Shouldn't the governor,
- 29:30whoever it is, be there, uh be there walking around? And
- 29:34uh? You know, so I tell you what I tell you. How
- 29:37about this, We're gonna We're gonna have a new governor next time. Yes,
- 29:41And I'll come in like two weeks after the session starts, and we'll
- 29:45talk about whether we think it's a good thing the governor is actually there.
- 29:48About that, I think it depends on who's elected. Well I do too,
- 29:52but that but let's have that discussion for that. Fair enough, speaking
- 29:55to which if somebody sent me an article. Friend of mine sent me an
- 29:56article just before the show this morning from see It in Politics, and I
- 30:00had heard something about this, and this is on the national level, but
- 30:03it kind of goes along with what we're talking about here with division within the
- 30:07party. House Speaker Mike Johnson is in this article, and basically the headline
- 30:11is many Republicans planning to skip the House GOP retreat, which is going to
- 30:15be at the Greenbrier. I understand because they're grumbled about the location and they
- 30:19don't want to spend time with each other. It's like an old married couple.
- 30:23You know, we've been married for fifty years and the last thing I
- 30:26want to do is spend time with you and driving across country. I don't
- 30:29like that part of it, man. I you know, actually I talk
- 30:33about this a lot. When I started out back when Rob Cornelius I first
- 30:37met, you know, twenty two years ago. I knew Democrats right there
- 30:42were people that you could talk. I mean you might not have gone and
- 30:45had lunch together, but if you saw them out, you had conversations.
- 30:48You were taught. Heck, there are people that were really involved in Democrat
- 30:52politics back then that now have other jobs that I'm friendly with, you know
- 30:56what I mean. But the tone is different, though, Man, the
- 30:59tone is different now. I mean even among people, just as you brought
- 31:02out, I mean just among people in their own party. I just don't.
- 31:06I don't know, man, I just I don't understand the like going
- 31:08and just not being able to get along with somebody enough to have a conversation.
- 31:12I mean, heck, man, you know who I'm buddies with,
- 31:15Mike Wolfel, you know when it like probably about to be the only Democrat
- 31:18senator left, and he's a nice guy. Like we you know, we
- 31:22don't agree on a whole lot, but like we get along. That's what
- 31:26I'm saying. I just I don't. I don't like that aspect of it.
- 31:29And I may say things on here that you know, this this is
- 31:32a show. I don't know if you know wrong, but this is like
- 31:33an entertainment This is on the air. Yeah, so it's like it's like
- 31:37a news and entertainment show. So you gotta say some things. And I
- 31:41know you're gonna have collars and it's fun and it's whatever, but like,
- 31:45you know, if somebody's actually here and you're gonna you can have a conversation
- 31:48with somebody. So I don't like that. I don't. I don't like
- 31:51that at all. I don't like the fact that you said earlier, you
- 31:55know, oh gosh, Roger's talking to Democrats. Well whatever, you know
- 31:59what I mean, Like, well, I had a text about that.
- 32:01This is speaker. Hanshaw did far more than talk to the other party.
- 32:05He actively conspired with them. I mean, I wasn't in a conversation,
- 32:07so I can't. I look, I don't have any evidence of that.
- 32:10I mean, I guess i'd have to see what they're talking about. But
- 32:14you know, I think that's Look, I think I think Hanshaw does.
- 32:17That's a hard job. I mean, I think Hanshaw's really Harnshad is a
- 32:21really good guy. He's a really starting to imagine and that's a really really
- 32:23hard job, much harder than being the Cenate president. Let me do the
- 32:30sex will go to break this, says. The Westervirginian workforce participation rate in
- 32:32June of twenty fifteen was fifty four point five. It's fifty four point seven
- 32:37as of January twenty twenty four. Why have Republicans been ineffective in increasing the
- 32:43participation rate, and don't blame the federal government without also hold on, don't
- 32:46blame the federal government without also talking about the Republican president and Republican Congress.
- 32:52It's the federal government. I mean, it's the federal government said don't do
- 32:54that. But they said that though, because they know that's the reason.
- 32:58I mean, it'd be like, you know, having an argument with somebody
- 33:00and like taking out their best argument and saying, well, you're not allowed
- 33:04to say the thing that it actually is. It is that the federal government
- 33:07makes it to where people don't have to go to work. That's why there's
- 33:09a low participation rate. And to be honest with you, in West Virginia
- 33:14it had been you know, super low forever. You know, we'd had
- 33:17the lowest workforce participation rate in the country. They started taking that in February
- 33:23of nineteen seventy six, and we had it every year that the Democrats were
- 33:28in control, every single time. And this again, able bodied people.
- 33:31This is not eighty year old or whatever this is. You know, Look,
- 33:35the federal government has makes it to where people don't have to go to
- 33:38work, and unfortunately for West Virginia, it's a bit of a cultural thing

- 36:30provided by for Pharmacy. Greg Thomas is here. I want to talk about
- 36:34the primary election a little bit. As you and I have talked in the
- 36:36past, a lot of elections in this state, greg will be decided in
- 36:39May rather than in November in the general, just as it was a lot
- 36:45of times when the Democrats ruled for the past eighty years. What are you
- 36:49looking at as far as some of these primary elections go, And we'll get
- 36:52into the let's talk local at this point, we'll talk about governor and senator
- 36:57and everything else. Like, let's talk about local. One that really hasn't
- 37:00gotten too hot yet, but I think it eventually will gonna be this county
- 37:05commission seat here. You actually have a Republican primary and a Democratic primary.
- 37:10Natalie Tenant is up against longtime serving Commissioner Kent Carper. And you know,
- 37:20I I don't talk to a lot of Democrats during the day. I mean,
- 37:23I mean I do. I mean I know Democrats, but it's like
- 37:27I don't talk to a lot. I don't really know sort of what they're
- 37:30up to. I think it's sort of I mean, they're obviously not unified
- 37:34behind Carper. You wouldn't have a big name person running against him, right,
- 37:37So I don't really know, you know, what's going on there.
- 37:39I think it'll be interesting to see who doesn't come out and support Carper,
- 37:45you know what I mean, Like last time, I'm sure he ran,
- 37:46or last time Selango ran or whatever, they all kind of got unified behind
- 37:51one or the other. That didn't happen this time. So I think it'll
- 37:54be it'll be interesting to see who doesn't help Kent. You know, whether
- 38:00they publicly oppose him or not, I doubt, but you know, the
- 38:04fairy fact that they're not helping him will probably be an indicator of where they
- 38:07really were on the race. You know, on the Republican side, you
- 38:10got Dwayne Duncan versus Chris Walters. I know both these guys personally. You
- 38:16know, it looks like Dwayne's kind of come out of the gate early and
- 38:20pretty strong. You know, he's running radio ads. He's you know,
- 38:22I got a mail piece already. You know, I haven't seen as much
- 38:25from Chris. Uh so we'll you know, and Chris had you know,
- 38:30Chris was won some and lost some, and so we'll kind of see,
- 38:34you know, see how that race goes. The prosecutor race, you know,
- 38:37is just on the Republican side, you got Morgan sw Ser versus Debrusnik
- 38:44Switzer's running more of a grassroots campaign. She's the conservative in the race,
- 38:47sort of the Republicans Republican choice. Rusnick is already in the prosecutor's office.
- 38:54Uh, sort of new to politics, at least of the elective politics.
- 38:59Uh. But she's the one getting support from Selango, which a lot of
- 39:02which has turned a lot of Republicans off, you know what I mean.
- 39:06It's kind of like, why is a Democrat, you know, county commissioner
- 39:08getting involved in the Republican primary side and so. But but Selango's raised a
- 39:15bunch of money for so you know, I think she's gonna have more resources.
- 39:17But Switzer a sort of the the you know, the conservative in that
- 39:21race. Uh. Let's see, you got a state Senate race between Eric
- 39:29Nelson and Chris Pritt. You know Chris Pritt, who's in the House of
- 39:30Delegates. Nelson had been a delegate for a long time, he's been in
- 39:34the Senate for a little while now. And Nelson, you know, lookt
- 39:38Print is a very hard working candidate. But Nelson's a good campaigner. You
- 39:43know, Nelson puts pretty good campaigns together. He raises decent money. You
- 39:46know, he's he's got a pretty good voting record in the Senate. I
- 39:50think he's gonna be tough to beat there, but you know, but Print
- 39:52will work hard, no doubt. Uh. And then actually Print's wife,
- 39:55Kelly Pritt. This is probably the only family law one that's gonna be competitive,
- 40:00is his wife, Kelly Pritt is running against the Laura Van Meter and
- 40:06so that's one of those ones. It's just a Republican versus Democrat race,
- 40:09you know what I mean? And not that family family law judge gets all
- 40:13that, you know, a ton of attention, right, but I think
- 40:15that. But it is interesting because whenever I have one of these candidates on
- 40:20and it's nonpartisan, it's non political or whatever, I always get a text.
- 40:23If I don't ask what's their party, everybody wants to know whether it's
- 40:29on the ballot or not. They want to know. I'll use that as
- 40:30a segue into the circuit court race, because you know there's where there's eight
- 40:35circuit court seats now in Kannaw County. Obviously one of them. I'm very
- 40:38involved in the Ashley Dean versus Jennifer Bailey one. You know, we're where
- 40:44Ashley's the you know, young conservative Republican and and Bailey's sort of the older,
- 40:52you know, longtime Democrat, you know, liberal judge. And so
- 40:55that's you know, that's one that's officially non partisan, but obviously it's you
- 41:00know, I think it'll be pretty kind of a clear choice type thing.
- 41:05And and and that's one that you know, look, I well, I
- 41:08don't know how much I'm supposed to get into it because there's all these like
- 41:10rules and stuff. But you know, look at most, nine times out
- 41:16of ten, the best candidate running the best campaign, with the best political
- 41:21environment wins, you know. And and so that that's you know, that
- 41:25that's kind of what you have to look at with races like that. And
- 41:30then the other one is that the open seat is Richard Lindsay, who was
- 41:36a Democrat state senator, so this is an open seat. And then the
- 41:39republic on the well, again that's the non partisan one, but the Republican
- 41:45candidate in that race is a guy named Eric Cantrell who works in the prosecutor's
- 41:47office. He's up from like Elkview. You know, that's one that you
- 41:52know, Look, Lindsay's a liberal guy, but he's a nice guy.
- 41:57He's raised okay money, you know, Cantrell kind of got a late start.
- 42:01You know. Look, I think if Ken Trell can put some money
- 42:04together and let people know that he's sort of the conservative Republican choice in that
- 42:07race, that could be competitive. But you know, it's not like Lindsay's
- 42:12a you know, kind of a repulsive liberal guy, you know what I
- 42:15mean. He's just you know, he's a nice guy. He's just you
- 42:17know, he's just a he's a liberal Democrats, you know. And then
- 42:22you know, a couple of delegate races I think will be competitive too.
- 42:25We got some really good delegate candidates on the Republican side. Jb Acris doesn't
- 42:31have an opponent. But then you've got Tristan Levitt, who I know comes
- 42:35on the show every once in a while. He's a really strong candidate.
- 42:37And then Mark Carter, who is a longtime friend of mine and really really
- 42:42strong candidate that that it's going to become an excellent, excellent delegate. And
- 42:47then the other one, I'll just say because you had her on the show
- 42:52earlier, is Casey Sachs is running for school board here and can a count
- 42:55under Bridge Valley. She's done a great job of separating the two. I
- 42:59mean, he's not she's not talked about her campaign. She's not come on
- 43:01as a candidate. She wants to talk about Bridge Valley when she's we are
- 43:05very Kidnall County is very, very fortunate to have somebody of her caliber running
- 43:10for uh school board, you know, with that kind of background. She
- 43:14was appointed uh, you know, she was appointed on the uh you know,
- 43:19by and she actually worked in the Bush or the the Trump administration and
- 43:22the Department of Education. She's done a great job with Bridge Valley. I
- 43:28think she's an absolute superstar candidate. And so to look at you know,
- 43:32I think that's a you know, that's a lot of that's a lot of
- 43:36stuff for There's a couple of Democrat races in there, but like that's a
- 43:39lot of reasons for Republicans to come out and vote. And so I think
- 43:44you're gonna have huge, I don't want to say huge. You're gonna have
- 43:47better than usual turnout in the Republican than the Republican primary, you know,
- 43:53which is going to help the Republican candidates and those non partisan races. And
- 44:00you know, I wish I mean, obviously I wish Trump would have been
- 44:02you know, I wish we would have got to, you know, had
- 44:05a competitive presidential which you know, I guess Trump got the it's over.
- 44:08It's over now. So but look, there's still just going to be a
- 44:12ton of people that want to come vump for them. Man. I mean,
- 44:14you know, they love them, dude, they love it. And
- 44:16we'll go to break on this. I have the TV on here as I
- 44:19normally do in the control room. And earlier they said that Robert Kennedy Junior
- 44:23that he his possible vice presidential Aaron Rodgers and Jesse the Body of Teroa,
- 44:31former governor of Minnesota. Well, if you're running third party, you got
- 44:35to do something to get attention, I guess. So that's where we are.

- 47:54I think I've seen this episode of South Park. I just I just read
- 48:00them. I just you know, I haven't heard almost anything on that race.
- 48:05And again I'm not a Democrat. I don't vote the Democratic primary,
- 48:07so I don't have a lot of skin in the game on it. But
- 48:09like, I just haven't heard anything on it, you know, which I
- 48:14to me, that's sort of telling, though, because you have this long
- 48:16term incumbent running and you have it like there aren't a lot of people going
- 48:20out there and saying much about it. So so we'll see. I mean,
- 48:24I have no idea. Tex says, is no wonder they can't pass
- 48:28legislation if they all hate each other. According to the text from earlier in
- 48:31the show, Tex says, day we need to thank Biden for all these
- 48:35jobs coming to our states, green jobs Republicans didn't want, you know,
- 48:40that's somewhat's true. I mean, I think it's probably more of a wash
- 48:45given that some of the you know, the harm that they do, the
- 48:49harm that the Biden administration has done to the real energy industry. You know.
- 48:54So they have brought in some green jobs, but it's pales in comparison
- 48:59to the amount of you know, other actual energy jobs we have in West
- 49:01Virginia. But Dave Alan Chow one five EU line Bride You Party by Morgan

- 49:08the People dot com. Let's quickly talk about the governor's race. It's starting
- 49:12to ramp up with the TV ads. I saw the Miller ad. I've
- 49:15seen Morrissey ads, Capito ads. Not so much mac Water yet I'm told
- 49:17that they're coming. You know, it's it's guns, it's flannel, it's
- 49:23Yate, Trump, bou Biden. I mean, look, here's here's what
- 49:27I think. I think that I've heard that it's a very competitive race between
- 49:34between Morrissey, Miller, and Capito, and which wouldn't surprise me. I
- 49:43think the reason that you're hearing all of that stuff first because it is early.
- 49:46I mean, we're sixty days away from the election. You know,
- 49:49the average person, you know, your listeners care about this stuff, or
- 49:52they wouldn't be listening to sort of this kind of show. But the average
- 49:57person isn't sort of ready for that yet. And so you know, your
- 50:00listeners have to remember you're on the front end of sort of the focus of
- 50:05a campaign. But I think what you do early on in the campaign is,
- 50:09you know, you sort of go out there and you talk about the
- 50:12issues that are that are everybody else talks about, right, what you want
- 50:16to do? If I'm Chris Miller, I'm want to go out there and
- 50:19say, here's where I'm at on guns, Here's where i'm at on abortion,
- 50:22Here's where I'm at on that stuff, because those are the issues that
- 50:24most Republicans care about, so they want to know you're at least with them
- 50:28on that level. Once you establish that level, though, right, every
- 50:32you know, are you for Trump? Are you for this? Are you
- 50:36for guns? Are you for babies? Whatever? Then there's sort of the
- 50:38next level of like, all right, you know, what about some of
- 50:42the other issues, and eventually you'll get to what are you going to do
- 50:45as governor? Right? But that that's the last piece to it. So
- 50:49I think that you know, and I do other talk radio shows, as
- 50:52you know, and I think that people like you listeners are ready for part
- 50:57three already, but the average voter watching television is still at part one.
- 51:02Maybe, right, they're all interchangeable, with a due respect to all of
- 51:06them, And I consider myself to be friends with all of them, well,
- 51:09okay, most of them. So so here's the deal. I mean,
- 51:15they are all saying exactly the same thing as you said, but it's
- 51:20different. But they're saying it in different I don't know, maybe it's just
- 51:22because I know them too, but I but you can tell in different ways,
- 51:27right, I mean, like Morrissey's saying the same stuff because he always
- 51:30says the same stuff, right, Like Morrissey goes and kind of talks about
- 51:34the issue of the day, hits two or three highlights, and that's what
- 51:37he does, you know, more kind of more capital goes back to like,
- 51:40hey, here's what I did in the legislature. Here's the kind of
- 51:44things I work on. You know, we all know a you know,
- 51:46mom's a US senator, so we know kind of where her political background is.
- 51:50And I think he's kind of coming from this like hey, you know,
- 51:52we sort of know where he's coming from. And you know, looking
- 51:57Chris Miller, you know, is the new new to politics guy. Obviously
- 52:02he has his own money and he's pushing for it. But I mean his
- 52:05TV ads man have been awesome. Yeah, I mean really really well,
- 52:07he's got a little experience in that round I think he's connecting with voters in
- 52:12a way that the other guys can atablish. He's just got to get that
