- 0:00Speaker 1: But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not
- 0:03Speaker 1: defile himself with a portion of the king's meat, nor
- 0:06Speaker 1: with the wine which he drank. Therefore he requested the
- 0:10Speaker 1: prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Daniel 1.8 Lord, because my purpose means more to me
- 0:20Speaker 1: than my comfort, I will be mindful to treat my
- 0:23Speaker 1: body in a way that will allow me to carry
- 0:26Speaker 1: out my mission while here on earth. Today, like Daniel
- 0:31Speaker 1: and the young men, I am making a conscious decision
- 0:35Speaker 1: to honor my body by not defiling it with food
- 0:39Speaker 1: or substances that would stop me from experiencing the fullness
- 0:43Speaker 1: of all you have in store for me. I thank you, Lord,
- 0:47Speaker 1: for the will and the fortitude to stand strong when
- 0:51Speaker 1: I'm tempted to choose the comfort of laziness and poor
- 0:54Speaker 1: health habits. I declare that health is a top priority.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I declare that through my decision to live a healthy lifestyle,
- 1:05Speaker 1: my mind will be sharper and more creative than ever before.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I praise you and thank you in advance for uncommon
- 1:15Speaker 1: outcomes and alliances that are working on my behalf to
- 1:19Speaker 1: help realize the dreams and destiny you've placed on and
- 1:23Speaker 1: in me. No matter what, I will not be ashamed
- 1:28Speaker 1: of my acceleration because I've made the decision to honor
- 1:31Speaker 1: my body, which is the vehicle needed to take me
- 1:35Speaker 1: to my future. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for
- 1:43Speaker 1: praying with us today. Continue your time with God by
- 1:47Speaker 1: listening to today's Bible story, brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Daniel and the Kingsmen In our last story, we were
- 2:07Speaker 2: taken up in the Spirit of the Lord with Ezekiel
- 2:10Speaker 2: as he scanned a vast valley of dry bones. As
- 2:13Speaker 2: the Spirit of God rushed into the valley, the bones
- 2:16Speaker 2: came to life and were restored. This was an image
- 2:20Speaker 2: of God's plan to restore Israel and pour out His Spirit.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Now we look into the life of Daniel. He, along
- 2:28Speaker 2: with the rest of God's people, was taken captive by
- 2:31Speaker 2: Babylon and Daniel is brought into the fold of King
- 2:34Speaker 2: Nebuchadnezzar to study and serve. Slowly, Daniel begins to influence
- 2:40Speaker 2: the wicked king and his men, inspired by the book
- 2:44Speaker 2: of Daniel.
- 2:48Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:50Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:53Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
- 2:57Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:59Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 3:03Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 3:05Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 3:08Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 3:11Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 3:14Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 3:18Speaker 3: to get a copy of The Jesus Book, simply go
- 3:21Speaker 3: to jackgram.org slash Jesus. That's jackgram.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:28Speaker 3: you for your support. In our previous reading, we heard
- 3:32Speaker 3: how God spoke to Ezekiel, taking him up in the
- 3:35Speaker 3: Spirit and giving him a vision of dry bones that
- 3:38Speaker 3: were brought back to life by the power of God's
- 3:40Speaker 3: Word and His Spirit. It was a message to Israel
- 3:44Speaker 3: that God would restore them to life and make one
- 3:47Speaker 3: nation of the two kingdoms of Israel and Judah. And ultimately,
- 3:51Speaker 3: it is a promise, a greater promise, of one who
- 3:54Speaker 3: would come, the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would not just
- 3:58Speaker 3: give life to Israel, but offer life to the whole world.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Today we'll hear a reading about a young exile named Daniel. He,
- 4:06Speaker 3: along with a few of his faithful Israelite captives, is
- 4:09Speaker 3: chosen to serve the Babylonian king. God is placing this
- 4:13Speaker 3: young man, a godly follower of the Lord, into a
- 4:17Speaker 3: place where he can influence evil men for the glory
- 4:19Speaker 3: of God. So, let's hear God's word today.
- 4:24Speaker 2: The kingdoms of Israel and Judah fell to the mighty
- 4:27Speaker 2: hand of King Nebuchadnezzar. Hooks were sewn into their lips,
- 4:31Speaker 2: and they were carted off to their captivity in Babylon.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Along with the people, King Nebuchadnezzar took the vessels in
- 4:38Speaker 2: the temple and placed them in his own treasury with
- 4:41Speaker 2: his gods. King Nebuchadnezzar was determined to graft Israel into
- 4:46Speaker 2: Babylonian culture. He would do so first by taking their temple.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Then he would take the best of them, the brightest
- 4:53Speaker 2: and most educated, to serve him. Nebuchadnezzar gathered young men, strong, good-looking, skilled,
- 5:01Speaker 2: and wise. He gave them access to his libraries and
- 5:04Speaker 2: the finest tutors Babylon could provide. He taught them foreign
- 5:08Speaker 2: languages and exposed them to different cultures, music, and art.
- 5:13Speaker 2: It was Nebuchadnezzar's intention to indoctrinate these young men to
- 5:16Speaker 2: become leaders over the captives and loyalty to Babylon. The
- 5:20Speaker 2: king provided a daily portion of food and wine for them.
- 5:24Speaker 2: It was his desire to educate them for three years.
- 5:28Speaker 2: And at the end of their time, they would stand
- 5:30Speaker 2: in front of the king. Among these young men were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael,
- 5:36Speaker 2: and Azariah from the tribe of Judah. Their names were
- 5:39Speaker 2: taken from them, and Nebuchadnezzar called them Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach,
- 5:46Speaker 2: and Abednego. Although Nebuchadnezzar took their names, he could not
- 5:51Speaker 2: take their true identities. Daniel watched closely as the king
- 5:55Speaker 2: and some of the young men feasted on the king's food.
- 5:59Speaker 2: It was not only sacrificed to idols, but it was dirty.
- 6:03Speaker 2: The grease dripped from the Babylonians' chin. He saw many
- 6:07Speaker 2: of the Babylonian nobles. They were overweight and bloated. Daniel
- 6:12Speaker 2: purposed in his heart to not defile himself. He would
- 6:15Speaker 2: not eat the king's food. The chief servant was concerned
- 6:19Speaker 2: for Daniel and thought that his health and favor would
- 6:22Speaker 2: decline if he did not eat. But Daniel had a
- 6:25Speaker 2: challenge for him and the king.' Test your servants and I,'
- 6:29Speaker 2: Daniel challenged.' For ten days my friends and I will
- 6:32Speaker 2: consume nothing but vegetables and water.' At the end of
- 6:35Speaker 2: those ten days, measure who is in better health.'' So
- 6:39Speaker 2: for ten days Daniel and his companions ate vegetables and
- 6:42Speaker 2: drank water,' while the other young men ate the food
- 6:45Speaker 2: sacrificed to idols.' When the ten days passed, Daniel and
- 6:49Speaker 2: his friends were far more healthy' and clear in mind
- 6:51Speaker 2: than the others.' So the chief servant ordered for all
- 6:55Speaker 2: the men in the palace to be given vegetables and water.
- 6:59Speaker 2: This was but one example of how Daniel and his
- 7:01Speaker 2: friends began to transform the Babylonian culture. They increased in knowledge, wisdom,
- 7:07Speaker 2: and favor with God. They had visions and dreams and
- 7:11Speaker 2: began to transform the hearts of those around them. Nebuchadnezzar
- 7:15Speaker 2: brought them into his presence as counselors and wise men.
- 7:18Speaker 2: In every matter, he found them ten times more insightful
- 7:22Speaker 2: than the Babylonian scholars, magicians, and enchanters.
- 7:29Speaker 3: In today's reading, we're reminded of the brutality of the Babylonians.
- 7:33Speaker 3: When they conquered Israel and Judah, they didn't just take
- 7:37Speaker 3: captives away in chains. Many of the captives were tortured
- 7:41Speaker 3: with hooks sewn into their lips, and as an act
- 7:43Speaker 3: of humiliation, this was meant to crush the spirit of
- 7:47Speaker 3: their vanquished foes. They also carted off precious items from
- 7:51Speaker 3: the temple, signaling that their gods were superior to those
- 7:54Speaker 3: of their enemies. They did not know or fear the
- 7:58Speaker 3: one true God. But among the captives, there were some
- 8:01Speaker 3: young men who would begin to change that and challenge that,
- 8:05Speaker 3: showing Nebuchadnezzar and his court who Yahweh is. Though they
- 8:10Speaker 3: were cruel and ruthless, the Babylonians were wise in how
- 8:14Speaker 3: they handled the people they conquered. Understanding that the best
- 8:18Speaker 3: and the brightest in Israel could prove to be a
- 8:20Speaker 3: benefit to Babylon, they selected the cream of the crop
- 8:24Speaker 3: and worked to assimilate them into Babylonian culture. Among those
- 8:29Speaker 3: chosen were Daniel and three of his friends. Rather than
- 8:33Speaker 3: suffer as slaves, Nebuchadnezzar gave these best and brightest access
- 8:37Speaker 3: to the riches of his kingdom, both in terms of
- 8:40Speaker 3: education and training and in comfort and the finer foods
- 8:43Speaker 3: and drinks the land had to offer. They were given
- 8:47Speaker 3: new Babylonian names to replace their Jewish ones. This was
- 8:51Speaker 3: meant to wipe away any former identity, to make their
- 8:54Speaker 3: Jewishness disappear as they were seduced by the pagan culture.
- 8:59Speaker 3: The Bible tells us in the New Testament, Romans chapter 12,
- 9:02Speaker 3: that we are not to conform to this world and
- 9:06Speaker 3: the patterns and the activities of this world. Unfortunately, too
- 9:11Speaker 3: many Christians believe often take the path of least resistance.
- 9:15Speaker 3: We don't stand up to the culture that is trying
- 9:17Speaker 3: to conform us. We want to blend into the world,
- 9:21Speaker 3: enjoy the world and what it has to offer. But
- 9:25Speaker 3: we are called to be better than this. We, like
- 9:29Speaker 3: Daniel and his companions, are called to stand apart, even
- 9:33Speaker 3: if we have to stand alone. But as Daniel and
- 9:36Speaker 3: his friends watched others accept the rich foods, including unclean
- 9:40Speaker 3: meat sacrificed to idols, He resolved not to be defiled.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Daniel chose to honor God and refuse what Nebuchadnezzar offered him.
- 9:49Speaker 3: This wasn't just an act of self-denial. It was a
- 9:54Speaker 3: dangerous refusal to abide by the king's commands. This act
- 10:00Speaker 3: could have easily been viewed as rebellion and rejection and
- 10:03Speaker 3: cost Daniel and his friends their lives. But God, as always,
- 10:08Speaker 3: is in control, and he has a purpose and a
- 10:10Speaker 3: plan in all of this. Daniel offered the chief of
- 10:14Speaker 3: servants a challenge. He and his friends would eat only
- 10:17Speaker 3: vegetables and drink water, abstaining from the meat and rich
- 10:20Speaker 3: food and wine for just 10 days. If at the
- 10:24Speaker 3: end of that time they were weaker, slower, less mentally
- 10:27Speaker 3: sharp than the others, they would follow the king's diet.
- 10:31Speaker 3: God honored the faithfulness of Daniel. And we read this
- 10:35Speaker 3: in the first chapter of Daniel, verse 17. To these
- 10:40Speaker 3: four young men, God gave knowledge and understanding of all
- 10:43Speaker 3: kinds of literature and learning. and Daniel could understand visions
- 10:47Speaker 3: and dreams of all kinds. After 10 days, it was
- 10:51Speaker 3: apparent that Daniel and his friends were stronger and brighter
- 10:55Speaker 3: than the others. God had big plans for these young men,
- 10:59Speaker 3: and it all began with a simple yet courageous, confident
- 11:03Speaker 3: step of faith. When we choose to live differently, to
- 11:08Speaker 3: dare to be a Daniel, our witness is powerful and persuasive.
- 11:13Speaker 3: It often opens doors for God's glory to be shown
- 11:16Speaker 3: to the world and often gives us opportunities to influence
- 11:20Speaker 3: those around us. When we stand up and stand apart,
- 11:25Speaker 3: we make a difference. We are not to be like
- 11:27Speaker 3: the world, but we are to be different from the world.
- 11:31Speaker 3: And so with this act of faithful defiance to the
- 11:33Speaker 3: pressures of culture, Daniel and his friends were given access
- 11:37Speaker 3: to an inner circle where God could work through them
- 11:39Speaker 3: to reach the hard-hearted of even King Nebuchadnezzar and many others.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Dear God, we are thankful for the courage of Daniel
- 11:49Speaker 3: and the young men who stood with him. Thank you
- 11:52Speaker 3: for the inspiration of their lives that they purposed in
- 11:55Speaker 3: their hearts not to defile themselves. May we also live
- 11:59Speaker 3: devout lives, lives that are given over to you and
- 12:03Speaker 3: not to the world. May our focus and our faithfulness
- 12:06Speaker 3: be strong and true against all odds. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
