- 0:18Speaker 1: Casey Smith and Tyler Jones.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Welcome to rot Fresh Radio. I'm your host, Casey Smith.
- 0:24Speaker 2: And guess what. The rut is raging around the country.
- 0:28Speaker 2: There are deer doing all kinds of deary things. However,
- 0:31Speaker 2: the weather is not cooperating. Will it affect the rut?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Let's see, this is rough Fresh.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Let's go what has happened in all you woods people.
- 0:48Speaker 2: This is rough Fresh Radio being Beneto's brought to you
- 0:52Speaker 2: my first log gear. And I've been wearing the tar
- 0:54Speaker 2: on a first log gear because it's been cold and
- 0:56Speaker 2: it's been hot.
- 0:56Speaker 3: It's been everything in between.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I've got about seventeen pieces in my backpack right now.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Uh and uh that's good. Makes some backpack nice and full,
- 1:04Speaker 2: and you need that when you're hung on the ground.
- 1:06Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like your seat pad pretty much.
- 1:09Speaker 3: It's seventy six degrees in here and you have on
- 1:11Speaker 3: your first light puffy right now?
- 1:13Speaker 4: Is it really seventies?
- 1:14Speaker 5: I feel like it is.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I don't know, it's it's kind of it's kind of warm.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Whenever you're talking to me on the phone today, Miscle's
- 1:19Speaker 4: in his Marino.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Well, Miscle, that's all he wore.
- 1:22Speaker 2: That's all there. What pieces that furnace furnace hoodie. That
- 1:27Speaker 2: thing was hot, dude, Listen, he was wearing it today.
- 1:30Speaker 2: When I was talking to you on the phone, I
- 1:31Speaker 2: stripped down to nothing but my Marino briefs because it
- 1:34Speaker 2: was so hot.
- 1:35Speaker 4: There were both way Merinos. Look at y'all.
- 1:37Speaker 2: It's right out there, the Marino Boys together, Marino banditdo
- 1:41Speaker 2: is up in here.
- 1:42Speaker 3: That's us.
- 1:45Speaker 2: So, uh, we've got some rough, fresh interviews today. I
- 1:49Speaker 2: don't know if y'all know this, but it's the month
- 1:50Speaker 2: of November and it's a big deal. Yeah, So these
- 1:54Speaker 2: are the big times, the good stuff to listen to.
- 1:57Speaker 3: We've got some crazy stuff talk about here in a bit.
- 2:00Speaker 2: But I believe that there's a good number of you
- 2:04Speaker 2: sitting there sad, quiet alone, just crying in your pillow
- 2:12Speaker 2: because it's after November tenth and the rut's over.
- 2:16Speaker 3: For the rest of your life is that the right tiler.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Is that right? No, Oh, my gosh, it's not.
- 2:20Speaker 6: No. No, listen, y'all. The rutt is raging right now.
- 2:25Speaker 6: It's raging.
- 2:26Speaker 4: You know what. Else, I'm gonna give you a little
- 2:27Speaker 4: bit optimism here.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I need it.
- 2:30Speaker 6: Once, I'm serious. Once I was talking to Greg about
- 2:32Speaker 6: this this morning. Once the doe, once the bucks have
- 2:36Speaker 6: made their rounds to all the family dough groups and
- 2:40Speaker 6: a lot of the does become bred, the bucks get
- 2:45Speaker 6: more active even or at least they're more visible.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:49Speaker 6: So, in other words, this buck is still full of testosterone.
- 2:53Speaker 6: He's still mad at the world. He still thinks he's
- 2:55Speaker 6: got breeding rights to everything that walks right now. And
- 2:59Speaker 6: he also knows that there are a bunch of does
- 3:02Speaker 6: that are not in heat anymore or whatever not. They've
- 3:05Speaker 6: already been bred, and so he has to make these
- 3:08Speaker 6: rounds longer and longer and longer to find the dough
- 3:11Speaker 6: last does that aren't bred. And then eventually, in my opinion,
- 3:14Speaker 6: there's what a lot of people call the second rut,
- 3:16Speaker 6: which happens when a lot of times, when you know,
- 3:19Speaker 6: depending on buckdough ratios, if there wasn't something that was bred,
- 3:25Speaker 6: you know, a month later then it'll come back in
- 3:28Speaker 6: or for the six month old deer that are kind
- 3:31Speaker 6: of just becoming mature enough to do the thing right.
- 3:35Speaker 6: So there's a lot of hope involved right now. In fact,
- 3:38Speaker 6: I think a lot of guys would agree. But for
- 3:42Speaker 6: me in the Midwest, the Thanksgiving area has always been
- 3:48Speaker 6: a really good time for me in my opinion. I
- 3:52Speaker 6: actually one eyed jack. I shot that deer in twenty
- 3:55Speaker 6: fifteen and he was following a big mature dough on
- 3:59Speaker 6: Decemimber second. So there's there's great things that happen. That's
- 4:04Speaker 6: a as a Kansas deer, y'all. I mean, those these
- 4:07Speaker 6: are deer that behave like the quote unquote Midwest deer
- 4:12Speaker 6: that everybody thinks November seventh is the last day they
- 4:14Speaker 6: do anything right. So have hope, have hope that it
- 4:19Speaker 6: will it can happen.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I've talked to many killers, actually not just Tyler, who
- 4:23Speaker 2: say that they like the teens in November the best
- 4:26Speaker 2: for killing and likes this big mature deer.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I'm not.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I don't personally have the experience of that to to
- 4:32Speaker 2: confirm or deny, but I can see where they out there. Yeah,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and you go find them and it works. One of
- 4:40Speaker 2: the things, honestly that at least in our neck of
- 4:43Speaker 2: the woods, that you could have going for you is
- 4:46Speaker 2: that the cover gets more sparse and the deer in
- 4:52Speaker 2: the open because you have frosts. So a lot of
- 4:54Speaker 2: the country gets the first frost between October twenty eighth
- 4:57Speaker 2: and November seventh, and that's going to cause leaves to fall.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It's gonna cause the grass turn brown and die and
- 5:03Speaker 2: fall over and it and like, things can look a
- 5:05Speaker 2: lot different from Halloween to you know, November tenth, and
- 5:09Speaker 2: you can find visible deer ye, So get out there,
- 5:12Speaker 2: get your glass out if you hadn't. You know, there's
- 5:14Speaker 2: a lot of guys that kill big dogs that way. Well,
- 5:16Speaker 2: Chancey Walters, we you know friends the program Chancy Walters.
- 5:19Speaker 2: He kills big deer that way just putting eyes on him,
- 5:22Speaker 2: which element yeah okay, yeah, yeah.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yeah for sure.
- 5:27Speaker 2: By the way, check out the Only podcast if you hadn't,
- 5:29Speaker 2: that's our main show. We talk all about hunting tactics,
- 5:33Speaker 2: stories from our hunts, and we laugh a whole whole lot.
- 5:36Speaker 3: So if you like to be a part of fun things,
- 5:38Speaker 3: check that out.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But today we're gonna have some fun as well, because man,
- 5:43Speaker 2: I was responsible this week. Tyler has held it down. No,
- 5:47Speaker 2: I don't mean I'm responsible. I mean this just this week.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Tyler's held it down all year while I've
- 5:53Speaker 2: been on these hunts, and now we're kind of swapping
- 5:55Speaker 2: rolls a little bit. He has some really cool hunts
- 5:58Speaker 2: that he's been going on. So I was the guy
- 6:01Speaker 2: who gathered guests this week, and it just so happens.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I got a lot of dudes on here that sound
- 6:08Speaker 2: kind of like me. Well, I have a relative, Isaac Smith.
- 6:13Speaker 2: He didn't sound like me, but he we're relatives. So yeah,
- 6:17Speaker 2: he's up there hunting in Michigan, had some success up there.
- 6:21Speaker 2: We have Patrick Paysinger.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Isaac's been successful in Michigan though.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Yeah, right, apparently it's going down in Michigan. Yeah, well,
- 6:29Speaker 3: there you go. That's it.
- 6:30Speaker 4: It's calm in Texas, Kilam, Michigan.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Don't matter where the big numbers this week, guys, by
- 6:35Speaker 2: the way, so just wait some big numbers when it
- 6:37Speaker 2: comes to predictions. Patrick pay Singer from dead En Game
- 6:41Speaker 2: calls he is in Kansas right now hunting a giant.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Brennan Rhodes, my high school best friend, one of my
- 6:50Speaker 2: best friends of my life, has been in Old Mexico
- 6:53Speaker 2: hunting deer down there. Got an interesting report from some
- 6:57Speaker 2: giants that went down in Mexico. And then we've got
- 7:02Speaker 2: the real Pitts, Michael Pitts from Real Tree Road Trips,
- 7:05Speaker 2: the real one. He's the real one, the real deal.
- 7:08Speaker 2: He fakes on Brian Bostik, and Pitts has been hunting
- 7:14Speaker 2: in Georgia. And it's going down in Georgia right now
- 7:18Speaker 2: apparently too. And Pitts's gonna give us a lowdown on
- 7:19Speaker 2: all that country stuff. Apparently it's going down in Georgia
- 7:23Speaker 2: right now as well.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Man. I mean, it's mid November, right, The reports are
- 7:26Speaker 3: gonna be good.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Guys, don't expect anything terrible, right, but there are some
- 7:31Speaker 2: intricate details that just might help you kill the big bucks.
- 7:33Speaker 2: So let's get to these interviews. I have got my buddy,
- 7:37Speaker 2: Isaac Smith. He has been hunting up in Michigan, chasing
- 7:41Speaker 2: the bucks around with some success.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Isaac, what's going on, Hey, how's it going? Man? Oh,
- 7:46Speaker 3: it's going pretty good.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Just trying to get some work done while I'm in
- 7:49Speaker 2: the middle of a hunt and dealing with you know,
- 7:52Speaker 2: hot temps and all that.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Well, how's it looking up there.
- 7:57Speaker 7: It's been pretty pretty good.
- 7:59Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:00Speaker 7: A lot of active bucks in Michigan, that's for sure.
- 8:02Speaker 3: That's cool, man. I heard all the bucks got killed
- 8:04Speaker 3: in Michigan.
- 8:05Speaker 2: That's what people say, Like at one point five is
- 8:08Speaker 2: meture buck there, right.
- 8:11Speaker 8: You know, it seems to be the trend until this
- 8:14Speaker 8: time of year, and then they just start showing.
- 8:16Speaker 7: Up, you know.
- 8:17Speaker 3: So yeah that's cool man.
- 8:19Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I've been I've been fortunate.
- 8:20Speaker 8: I actually just moved to Michigan about two months ago,
- 8:23Speaker 8: so it's my first full season here, so it's all
- 8:27Speaker 8: new to me. But you know, yeah, I was able
- 8:30Speaker 8: to get a nice buck down and then I've seen
- 8:34Speaker 8: multiple other really nice nine to ten point type bucks
- 8:39Speaker 8: with good frames.
- 8:40Speaker 3: And yeah, I don't know.
- 8:43Speaker 8: What the what all the the attitude about Michigan is about, honestly,
- 8:47Speaker 8: because I'm seeing great bucks here.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I mean there's been some big ones killed there,
- 8:52Speaker 2: for sure. I think it's just a lot of hunters,
- 8:55Speaker 2: which translates to a lot of pressure. But there's a
- 8:58Speaker 2: lot of deer, so everybody gets to have fun. Yep,
- 9:01Speaker 2: for sure, what are those deer doing that you're seeing
- 9:05Speaker 2: come again, like the deer that you're that you had
- 9:08Speaker 2: success with, and the other bucks that you've seen around.
- 9:10Speaker 2: What are they doing are they are they doing a
- 9:12Speaker 2: bed to feed things still? Are they scraping or are
- 9:15Speaker 2: they chasing?
- 9:16Speaker 7: Dose?
- 9:16Speaker 8: Yeah, they're scraping. They seem to be cruising.
- 9:20Speaker 7: I have not seen a single buck chasing all all fall,
- 9:24Speaker 7: so that seems a little weird to me.
- 9:27Speaker 8: I feel like, in you know, previous years, primarily being
- 9:33Speaker 8: in my home base of Wisconsin, you know, there'd be.
- 9:36Speaker 7: A lot of chasing by now.
- 9:37Speaker 8: But and I was in Wisconsin last week too, and
- 9:40Speaker 8: I did not see any chasing there either.
- 9:42Speaker 7: But as it was weird.
- 9:44Speaker 8: But yeah, a lot of bucks moving in the morning,
- 9:47Speaker 8: and it's it's kind of been like really warm mid
- 9:51Speaker 8: day around south central Wisconsin and Michigan, So I don't know,
- 10:00Speaker 8: mostly morning activity.
- 10:02Speaker 3: That's directly related to temperature.
- 10:06Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 10:07Speaker 8: I heard that the acorn crop has been just like
- 10:10Speaker 8: off the charts and it's keeping dear more local. I
- 10:14Speaker 8: don't know if that's something you've been hearing as well.
- 10:17Speaker 3: But around the country it seems to be the case.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I mean, it is in East Texas, I just talked
- 10:21Speaker 2: to Michael Pittson in Georgia.
- 10:24Speaker 3: He said the same thing. So it seems as if
- 10:27Speaker 3: that's that's what's going on.
- 10:29Speaker 7: That's pretty interesting.
- 10:30Speaker 8: I would have thought that just it being the rut
- 10:33Speaker 8: would kind of overrule all other factors.
- 10:36Speaker 7: Whether it's warmer, cold, or acorns or not or whatever.
- 10:39Speaker 8: But it's definitely, in my experience, the last couple of
- 10:43Speaker 8: weeks seem to be.
- 10:46Speaker 7: The least ruddy rut like that I've experienced.
- 10:50Speaker 3: That's weird, man.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Well, do you think that the just consistency that's on
- 10:56Speaker 2: the weather charts right now is going to help or
- 10:59Speaker 2: hurt that?
- 11:03Speaker 8: I don't know. I've just I've been wround this whole
- 11:06Speaker 8: season so far, so I'm not sure what.
- 11:08Speaker 3: To expect, you know. Yeah, but yeah.
- 11:11Speaker 8: It's it's on these colder mornings like this morning, my
- 11:14Speaker 8: son and I were out, we had a couple a
- 11:17Speaker 8: couple of good Bucks come through, and then it just
- 11:20Speaker 8: kind of shut off, you know, by ten o'clock or so,
- 11:26Speaker 8: and that's just when the temperatures kind of spikes and
- 11:29Speaker 8: and we just kind of get bored.
- 11:31Speaker 3: So are y'all hunting like deep in cover or are
- 11:34Speaker 3: you doing the field edge thing.
- 11:38Speaker 7: It's a mix of both.
- 11:40Speaker 8: I got this property in Michigan that borders a golf course,
- 11:43Speaker 8: so I can see him out on.
- 11:45Speaker 7: The golf course.
- 11:46Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, but then we're back in the cover,
- 11:49Speaker 8: so they kind of you know, head back in these
- 11:54Speaker 8: cut trails and stuff. So true you can see them
- 11:57Speaker 8: coming before they hit the timber. So that's kind of yeah,
- 12:00Speaker 8: that is cool. Yeah, it's been fun, but no, not
- 12:05Speaker 8: not really doing the field edge thing, not so much.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 2: So if you were to look ahead for the next
- 12:13Speaker 2: week and to rate the next week on a scale
- 12:17Speaker 2: of one to ten for buck movement, what would you call.
- 12:19Speaker 7: It, I'd say in Michigan that'd be like a eight.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Oh that's pretty good. Yeah.
- 12:27Speaker 7: I mean I've had.
- 12:29Speaker 8: Like a good shooters come through every set for the
- 12:35Speaker 8: last week, and it's kind of it kind of seems
- 12:39Speaker 8: to be just.
- 12:41Speaker 7: The frequency is kind of going up.
- 12:45Speaker 8: And I've got I've got one buck tag left here
- 12:49Speaker 8: in Michigan, so I'm I'm kind of saving it for
- 12:52Speaker 8: a special one.
- 12:53Speaker 7: But but the.
- 12:57Speaker 8: Opportunities, for sure, they're like, uh, they seem to be
- 13:01Speaker 8: cruising hard. Yeah, but again just like that, I don't know,
- 13:05Speaker 8: I don't see him dogging does.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Like so, well, who knows that point in time, you know,
- 13:13Speaker 2: like it is November and you gave it an eight.
- 13:16Speaker 3: So they're listening and they're going to cooperate. I think so.
- 13:18Speaker 3: I think that this is your week.
- 13:20Speaker 9: Man.
- 13:20Speaker 3: You're gonna fill that last buck tag on a giant
- 13:23Speaker 3: I hope.
- 13:24Speaker 8: So fire arms open tomorrow, So that's a wild card.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Yeah, yep.
- 13:30Speaker 7: Well I'm gonna just keep it up and try to
- 13:33Speaker 7: make it happen.
- 13:33Speaker 3: That's right.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Ride the roller coaster, man. I appreciate the report. You
- 13:37Speaker 2: bet on the phone. I have got my buddy Patrick
- 13:41Speaker 2: pay Singer from dead End Game Calls. I used to
- 13:43Speaker 2: call him Big Pat, but he's kind of medium Pat
- 13:45Speaker 2: these days. You've been slimming up Patrick.
- 13:47Speaker 10: Yes, I have had to keep over those kiddos.
- 13:50Speaker 3: I guarantee you, man, and keep up chasing them.
- 13:52Speaker 4: Deer.
- 13:52Speaker 2: You're up in Kansas right now. Actually we are sharing
- 13:55Speaker 2: a state at the moment. We're both in Kansas and
- 13:57Speaker 2: trying to find some big whitetail bucks.
- 13:59Speaker 3: You put in eyes on any.
- 14:02Speaker 9: Yes, sir, I am seeing a lot riding around. Been
- 14:07Speaker 9: just doing some road scouting in the mornings and seeing
- 14:10Speaker 9: them on their feet.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I guarantee you man.
- 14:13Speaker 2: It's like, I don't know, different parts of the country
- 14:15Speaker 2: the rut looks different. And in Kansas, this later I
- 14:19Speaker 2: don't know if you call it later, but you know,
- 14:21Speaker 2: at least kind of middle of the rut seems to
- 14:23Speaker 2: really get them deer out running around.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Is that what you're seeing?
- 14:27Speaker 10: Yeah, that's exactly what I say. It seems like.
- 14:30Speaker 9: The week leading into Thanksgiving is always the best in Kansas,
- 14:34Speaker 9: at least a part southeastern Kansas where I'm at, the
- 14:37Speaker 9: bigger boys get up closer, you get the Thanksgiving.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah, man, And that's that's exciting too, because you know
- 14:45Speaker 2: sometimes people look at like once the first ten days
- 14:48Speaker 2: of November is over, it's like over. It's like, no, man,
- 14:50Speaker 2: there's a lot of good stuff going on right now,
- 14:53Speaker 2: that's right. Yeah, yeah, So what are the deer really doing?
- 14:56Speaker 2: Are they targeting dough betting areas? Are they heading the
- 14:58Speaker 2: food or like, what do you say seeing bucks doing
- 15:00Speaker 2: right now?
- 15:02Speaker 9: What I'm seeing is a mixture of I'm seeing some
- 15:06Speaker 9: single mature bucks out with those out in the middle
- 15:09Speaker 9: of the pastures and the stage, and then I'm just
- 15:14Speaker 9: seeing loan cruisers, cruisies, ditches and fence rows looking for those.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Are you seeing big mature bucks doing that?
- 15:24Speaker 9: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, it's just seems like the transition
- 15:29Speaker 9: right now from young immature bucks to mature bucks getting
- 15:34Speaker 9: on their feet this week.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Yeah, so is that you think that's is that weather related?
- 15:40Speaker 2: Is it dates or what makes that happen?
- 15:43Speaker 10: I think it's dates. I think it would be even
- 15:45Speaker 10: better if it was a little bit cooler.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yeah, we're looking at a pretty pretty I wouldn't call
- 15:50Speaker 2: it bleak outlook, but it's just a very monotonous weather
- 15:54Speaker 2: pattern that we're in, you know, for the foreseeable future.
- 15:56Speaker 2: We're looking at similar dates, which I guess be good, right,
- 16:00Speaker 2: I mean, if you got a pattern, they're going to
- 16:02Speaker 2: hold to it.
- 16:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:04Speaker 9: Yeah, it is very stagnant weather. It's actually working really
- 16:08Speaker 9: good because I'm targeting a specific big mature buck and
- 16:13Speaker 9: he is not on a dough. He's going from betting
- 16:16Speaker 9: to feed and uh so it's better for me trying
- 16:20Speaker 9: to hunt one single buck of not having him chasing
- 16:23Speaker 9: and on a dough.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Right now, How are you getting the intel about this buck?
- 16:29Speaker 10: Trail cameras?
- 16:30Speaker 2: Yeah, so you're running cameras running celle cameras and getting
- 16:33Speaker 2: pictures of you having to go check cards or what
- 16:35Speaker 2: do you do with that?
- 16:37Speaker 10: No, I'm running a Browning cell phone camera. Yeah, and
- 16:40Speaker 10: it's it's.
- 16:40Speaker 9: Just outside the betting. They're they're coming from betting, hitting
- 16:45Speaker 9: some grain and then he's actually hitting a pond going
- 16:47Speaker 9: out to the big bean field and and where he's
- 16:50Speaker 9: hitting this, it's been right after shooting, and this this
- 16:54Speaker 9: morning he actually hit it going back into betting right
- 16:58Speaker 9: at shooting time. So I know he's betting close, and
- 17:01Speaker 9: I'm fixing to hit the woods and go after him.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Oh today, you're gonna go kill us deer today? Huh.
- 17:07Speaker 9: I hope the wind is right and I know he's
- 17:09Speaker 9: betty close, So I'm going in this afternoon after.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Him on one of those sets like that.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Are you trying to do pre hung sets or you
- 17:17Speaker 2: do you already have or you got your gear? You're
- 17:19Speaker 2: gonna go in and just kind of do running gunstop
- 17:21Speaker 2: top dealer, what are you doing?
- 17:24Speaker 9: Typically here I do running gun and use the cruiser saddle,
- 17:28Speaker 9: but here with limited trees, we do have a pre
- 17:32Speaker 9: hume set right there.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, man, I mean it's it's being able to
- 17:35Speaker 3: run and guns good.
- 17:36Speaker 2: But having that pre pre hung set is a real quiet,
- 17:39Speaker 2: easy way to get in the tree and be pretty
- 17:40Speaker 2: comfortable too.
- 17:42Speaker 9: Exactly.
- 17:43Speaker 3: So what do you think the deer are going to
- 17:45Speaker 3: be doing?
- 17:45Speaker 2: I mean, I know you're gonna tag out tonight, so
- 17:47Speaker 2: you don't really have to know too much, right, But
- 17:49Speaker 2: if you were going to say, you know, for people
- 17:51Speaker 2: out there who are thinking about mey, you know, hitting
- 17:54Speaker 2: the road and heading over, they're kind of looking at
- 17:56Speaker 2: that weather out looking kind of I don't know, what
- 17:57Speaker 2: do you think that you're gonna be doing over the
- 17:59Speaker 2: next week.
- 18:01Speaker 9: I think starting Friday or Saturday here in the southeast.
- 18:05Speaker 10: It's going to go up. It's going to go up because.
- 18:07Speaker 9: I'm seeing it get down into the fifties is a
- 18:10Speaker 9: high north wind. So I think about Friday or Saturday,
- 18:15Speaker 9: we're going to see it kick even up.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Oo.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Man, that gets me excited to I have a tag
- 18:20Speaker 2: just burning a hole in my pocket because's kind of
- 18:22Speaker 2: like you, you know, I'm itching. So that's exciting stuff, dude.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I can't wait to get out there and get after
- 18:26Speaker 2: him with you. If you had to give it a
- 18:29Speaker 2: rating on a scale of one to ten for the
- 18:32Speaker 2: next week, for Buck movement. What would you call it, I'd.
- 18:35Speaker 9: Say it's going to go from a six to an eight.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Eights are good, dude, I like big eights especially. You know,
- 18:42Speaker 2: I'll take you away. Yeah, awesome, Patricause. That's great info, dude.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I really appreciate it, and I appreciate your friendship.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Man. I hope you kill a giant tonight.
- 18:51Speaker 10: Yes, sir, sounds good, brother, and I hope you do too.
- 19:11Speaker 2: On the throne, I've got East Texas finest Brennan Roads. However,
- 19:15Speaker 2: he has been down hunting Old Mexico. This is one
- 19:18Speaker 2: of my best friends of all time.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Brendan.
- 19:20Speaker 2: What's going on, dude, Oh not much, man, not much.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Who you've been out caping deer?
- 19:27Speaker 3: Yes, sir, I had a friend of mine.
- 19:29Speaker 11: He killed a pretty good buck he's gonna get mounted,
- 19:32Speaker 11: and he asked.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Me to help him cape it out. So I went
- 19:34Speaker 3: and fellowship and skinned of deer.
- 19:38Speaker 5: Go Lee.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Man, you just a good buddy to have around, and
- 19:41Speaker 2: you got some good buddies that have decided to let
- 19:44Speaker 2: you go down to Old Mexico with him.
- 19:45Speaker 3: This is Mexico for our northern friends.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Uh. And you've been doing a little white til hunting
- 19:50Speaker 2: down there, Yes, sir, Yeah, Man, tell me about that.
- 19:54Speaker 3: What's it like down there?
- 19:55Speaker 2: It is amazing, very game rich environment, probably one of
- 20:00Speaker 2: the one of the top, one of the top hunts
- 20:03Speaker 2: that I've ever been on.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Man, that's cool. And you've been doing a lot of hunting.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I was with you and you killed your first elk,
- 20:09Speaker 2: and I mean it kind of hurts my heart a
- 20:10Speaker 2: little bit for you tell me that that's one of
- 20:12Speaker 2: the top hunts you've ever been on. But I would
- 20:14Speaker 2: assumed of the top hunts. Yeah, I've seen that's in
- 20:16Speaker 2: one of the top tiers there. They're sharing it, yeah,
- 20:18Speaker 2: for sure. So you've seen a lot of a lot
- 20:20Speaker 2: of deer down there then, huh.
- 20:22Speaker 11: Yeah, uh a fair amount. I mean, you know, talking
- 20:26Speaker 11: to those guys, it was it was slow movement, but.
- 20:30Speaker 2: To my standard, it was it was pretty good. Yeah,
- 20:33Speaker 2: what's going on down there? Those deer eating agriculture? Are
- 20:35Speaker 2: they just living out in the wild or what do
- 20:37Speaker 2: they do? So where we're hunting there is uh, absolutely
- 20:42Speaker 2: no agriculture. It is uh it is just short brush canyons.
- 20:46Speaker 5: You know.
- 20:47Speaker 11: The terrain, it's got some pretty good terrain to it, Uh,
- 20:50Speaker 11: some canyon type stuff.
- 20:54Speaker 3: You know, I mean it's just it's wild country. What
- 20:58Speaker 3: state is that in Mexico or probably that's where they
- 21:00Speaker 3: call them khila.
- 21:03Speaker 2: All right, that's like that salt hot sauce on the
- 21:06Speaker 2: counter at the cafe, isn't it.
- 21:08Speaker 3: That's it, that's it. That's cool.
- 21:11Speaker 2: And so y'all are targeting these deer uh at water
- 21:15Speaker 2: you're feeding or what?
- 21:17Speaker 3: What's going on down there?
- 21:18Speaker 9: Uh?
- 21:19Speaker 3: We are, we are there. There are troughs you know
- 21:24Speaker 3: for the it is a operating cattle ranch.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Uh they're so you know you can key off there.
- 21:31Speaker 2: There are no there is no natural pond water or
- 21:36Speaker 2: tank water.
- 21:37Speaker 11: Uh it is uh, it's all uh solar pumped and
- 21:44Speaker 11: fed down the water troughs.
- 21:45Speaker 3: I mean there are.
- 21:48Speaker 2: There are opportunities to hunt on the water and uh
- 21:51Speaker 2: also you know, uh this time of year, you know
- 21:55Speaker 2: there's the corner is effective.
- 22:00Speaker 11: But you know, as far as deer movement being slow,
- 22:03Speaker 11: it's they got a lot of rainfall this year and.
- 22:07Speaker 3: For November it was extremely green.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Got you, got you, and so whenever you're down there
- 22:12Speaker 2: in November right now, is it pre rut?
- 22:15Speaker 3: Like bachelor groups?
- 22:16Speaker 2: Are they separated making scrapes and doing the thing or
- 22:19Speaker 2: what's going on.
- 22:21Speaker 11: So we did, We did find scrapes, we did find
- 22:25Speaker 11: some fresh grapes, and uh that we were that.
- 22:28Speaker 3: We were, you know, running gun cameras.
- 22:31Speaker 11: This, that and the other, trying to locate different deer
- 22:33Speaker 11: that they seen in Velvet. And but as far as
- 22:38Speaker 11: right now, you know, pre rut, I mean it is.
- 22:43Speaker 11: I would say that it's probably on the cuff of
- 22:48Speaker 11: becoming pre rut. Like it's you might see you might
- 22:52Speaker 11: see a young deer try to try to bump a
- 22:56Speaker 11: dough around, but it's really not starting to kick there yet.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Got you? Got you?
- 23:03Speaker 2: So you actually shot you nasty down there, man. Congratulations
- 23:06Speaker 2: on that. It's pretty cool and it seemed like y'all
- 23:08Speaker 2: had a real good hunt. Is this kind of like
- 23:12Speaker 2: this cusp of the rut? Is that like the good
- 23:15Speaker 2: time to be there?
- 23:17Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 23:18Speaker 11: I mean, you know, any time to be there is
- 23:21Speaker 11: a good time, you know. But I would say I've
- 23:27Speaker 11: never been there in December?
- 23:28Speaker 3: Yeah I do. I do one of these days.
- 23:31Speaker 11: Hopefully, Lord willing, I'll be able to make a December trip,
- 23:34Speaker 11: because about mid December.
- 23:36Speaker 3: They really are, they really are rutting hard.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Well, what do you think they're gonna do in to
- 23:41Speaker 2: hear in about the next week or so, you think
- 23:43Speaker 2: it's gonna be kind of more of the same, or
- 23:45Speaker 2: what's it gonna look like.
- 23:46Speaker 3: I'm gonna say.
- 23:47Speaker 11: I'm gonna say probably in the next couple of weeks,
- 23:49Speaker 11: you're probably gonna start if I had to guess, you know,
- 23:52Speaker 11: when I'm still a greenhorn from Mexico hunting. I've been
- 23:55Speaker 11: in January, I've been in November. But I really feel
- 23:58Speaker 11: like by the way I've seen some of the younger
- 24:00Speaker 11: deer act, I feel like that you're going to start
- 24:02Speaker 11: seeing more activity, you know, moving towards you know, checking
- 24:05Speaker 11: those and uh, you know what I call cruising. One
- 24:10Speaker 11: thing we did notice, we did see some We did
- 24:14Speaker 11: see some older deer start gaining some ground. As far
- 24:18Speaker 11: as territory, you know, it's a very vast you know,
- 24:22Speaker 11: the ranch that we were hunting is very big, and uh,
- 24:26Speaker 11: you know summertime, you know, they're they're kind of locked
- 24:29Speaker 11: down to their home turf.
- 24:30Speaker 3: We were seeing bucks.
- 24:34Speaker 2: My you know, upwards to two miles from where they were.
- 24:38Speaker 3: You know, getting pictures of them summertime on their feet.
- 24:41Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 24:42Speaker 5: Man.
- 24:42Speaker 2: So if you look forward for like the next week,
- 24:45Speaker 2: what do you expect the deer movement, the buck movement.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Excuse me to be like, on a scale of one
- 24:49Speaker 3: to ten.
- 24:50Speaker 11: I would say probably in the next week, you're probably
- 24:55Speaker 11: I'd say I'd probably rate it at six, all right,
- 25:00Speaker 11: And then as time goes on, of course, I feel
- 25:03Speaker 11: like that's really gonna start taking off.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Yeah, the roller coaster is starting to tick right getting
- 25:08Speaker 2: on up there. Well, that's cool, man, appreciate the report.
- 25:10Speaker 2: It's from a neat area of the country. I'm glad
- 25:11Speaker 2: you got to go down there, man, and it was
- 25:13Speaker 2: a blood really really appreciate you, man, absolutely. Now I've
- 25:19Speaker 2: got Michael Pitts, the real Pits or Pits as most
- 25:21Speaker 2: people just call him. And this dude's a killer from
- 25:25Speaker 2: all over the country from you can see him on
- 25:27Speaker 2: real tree road trips and right now he is in Georgia.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Michael, what's going on? Man?
- 25:32Speaker 5: Man, it's just enough a day in paradise this way
- 25:34Speaker 5: I call it to see it and everything else.
- 25:37Speaker 3: So that's good man.
- 25:38Speaker 5: I was glad to be here.
- 25:39Speaker 3: What's the temperatures running right now in your area?
- 25:41Speaker 5: Georgia temperatures right now, we've been kind of on a
- 25:46Speaker 5: roller coaster here lately a little bit it got real
- 25:49Speaker 5: cold and then it warmed up a little bit to
- 25:51Speaker 5: the mid seventies or so. It's falling back down the
- 25:55Speaker 5: past few days. So we're getting a lot better movement,
- 25:59Speaker 5: you know, right now. The colder weather always helps the
- 26:04Speaker 5: visibility as far as daytime and mature bucks go. So
- 26:08Speaker 5: we're dealing with about sixty five degree tempts right now
- 26:12Speaker 5: on the high and the lows are around forty to forty.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Five right now. Y'all still have leaves on the trees
- 26:18Speaker 3: or is all that cover gone?
- 26:19Speaker 5: Yeah? No, we got leaves on the trees still. Now.
- 26:22Speaker 5: It's going pretty quick right now, but we've still got,
- 26:26Speaker 5: you know, a little bit of concealment left in the trees.
- 26:29Speaker 5: You know, it's not totally naked up there yet, but
- 26:33Speaker 5: it's on its way to being. We're probably at about
- 26:35Speaker 5: fifty percent right now. I would say, got you, got you.
- 26:38Speaker 5: And so you've been hunting Georgia quite a bit. What
- 26:41Speaker 5: are the deer really doing right now?
- 26:43Speaker 3: Are they pre rut or are they they starting to
- 26:45Speaker 3: get after it now?
- 26:46Speaker 5: They're starting to get after it right now. I would
- 26:49Speaker 5: say the past couple of weeks have been a good
- 26:51Speaker 5: pre rut phase to where you see a lot of
- 26:53Speaker 5: the younger deer chasing, but your mature deer not on
- 26:57Speaker 5: their feet yet. The past few days we've been seeing
- 27:01Speaker 5: a lot of mature deer on their feet, which is
- 27:03Speaker 5: a good thing and lets you know that the rut
- 27:05Speaker 5: is actually kind of starting to have. But it's just
- 27:08Speaker 5: not the young ones acting crazy. The temperature has affected
- 27:13Speaker 5: it a little bit. I mean, we were well on
- 27:15Speaker 5: our way to probably having an early rut and then
- 27:17Speaker 5: we had a temperature spike, which the temperature spikes, I
- 27:21Speaker 5: don't think that necessarily stops the rut. I think it
- 27:25Speaker 5: stops us from visually seeing it because they go more
- 27:29Speaker 5: nocturnal and they're.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Breeding at night and.
- 27:33Speaker 5: That sort of thing. But the colder weather lets us
- 27:36Speaker 5: allow visibility of it a little bit more because the
- 27:39Speaker 5: deer just on their feet and feeding more that sort
- 27:42Speaker 5: of thing. So the past couple of days have been
- 27:45Speaker 5: very good. We had an encounter with a mature deer
- 27:49Speaker 5: yesterday evening that was doing a lot of chase and
- 27:53Speaker 5: he came in typical right five minutes after shooting lights,
- 27:57Speaker 5: so we couldn't we couldn't put an air in him.
- 28:00Speaker 5: But he was standing thirty yards from me, you know,
- 28:03Speaker 5: and that's that well, you know that'll make you almost
- 28:06Speaker 5: vomit too. Yeah, that's about as bad as a miss sometimes.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Guarante you for sure. Are you pence points right now?
- 28:17Speaker 2: Are you still hunting food sources or what's it look like?
- 28:20Speaker 5: Oh, we've had a bumper acron crop this year. There's
- 28:23Speaker 5: been more acrons on the ground than I've ever seen,
- 28:26Speaker 5: which has a double edged sword if you ask me.
- 28:29Speaker 5: It's good that they've got the food crop on the ground,
- 28:31Speaker 5: but it's bad for patterning them because they will sit
- 28:35Speaker 5: there and just meander around in an oak bottom with
- 28:38Speaker 5: no potter in the bottom. So you know, it kind
- 28:40Speaker 5: of makes it tough. We we had been in a
- 28:43Speaker 5: drought until this last week, so you know, with what
- 28:46Speaker 5: and mill do, and the acrons are getting rid of
- 28:49Speaker 5: them in any fast fashion, and there's so many on
- 28:52Speaker 5: the ground it's just crazy. So it's kind of been
- 28:56Speaker 5: tough hunting the past few weeks just due to the
- 28:58Speaker 5: fact to the acre that are all over the ground.
- 29:01Speaker 5: I mean, they've got an unlimited food source there and
- 29:04Speaker 5: they just love it. So they're not coming to your
- 29:06Speaker 5: bait piles or your green fills or whatever near as much,
- 29:10Speaker 5: and then you throw the rut activity in there, and
- 29:13Speaker 5: there is surely no pattern in them. So basically it's
- 29:17Speaker 5: just getting in a tree and spending some seat time
- 29:20Speaker 5: and hoping it happens. Is a bowl hunter, I do
- 29:23Speaker 5: not like the full rut, just because of the simple
- 29:26Speaker 5: fact that you know you're limited with distance in these deer.
- 29:30Speaker 5: Just everywhere you almost got a hope of dough runs
- 29:33Speaker 5: up under you or whatever you know to make it happen.
- 29:37Speaker 5: It's a rifle hunter's a little bit easier because you
- 29:40Speaker 5: can reach out there and touch them. But I really
- 29:43Speaker 5: hate the full rut, to be honest with you, just
- 29:46Speaker 5: because of the fact that there's a lot of unpredictable
- 29:49Speaker 5: stuff that goes.
- 29:50Speaker 3: On so.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Hard this next week is being that, then what do
- 29:55Speaker 2: you expect going on this next week?
- 29:57Speaker 5: I think the next this next week is going to
- 29:59Speaker 5: be the full rut. Because I'm starting the past few days,
- 30:04Speaker 5: I've started to really see the mature bucks get on
- 30:06Speaker 5: their feet as far as visually myself and on camera,
- 30:11Speaker 5: you're the bigger deer. More mature deer are making themselves
- 30:15Speaker 5: more visible right now. So typically I look at the
- 30:19Speaker 5: full rut starting. You know, when I start seeing these
- 30:23Speaker 5: mature deer get on their feet and get out and
- 30:25Speaker 5: start showing interest in dose, which I have been seeing
- 30:28Speaker 5: the past few days.
- 30:30Speaker 4: That's good. Man.
- 30:30Speaker 2: So if you had to predict over the next week,
- 30:33Speaker 2: which you kind of expect the buck movement to be
- 30:36Speaker 2: like on be like on a scale of one ten,
- 30:38Speaker 2: what would.
- 30:38Speaker 3: You call it.
- 30:40Speaker 5: I'm gonna call it a I'm gonna call it a
- 30:43Speaker 5: solid nine.
- 30:45Speaker 3: That's high, brother, let's go.
- 30:47Speaker 5: I'm telling you the the big deer on their feet
- 30:50Speaker 5: right now. And as long as we don't get into
- 30:53Speaker 5: that mid seventies temperature, I think it will be good. Uh.
- 30:58Speaker 5: And I don't see the mid seventies temperatures coming back in.
- 31:02Speaker 5: I think it's gonna lay in the sixties a little bit.
- 31:06Speaker 5: And I think deer movement, as far as the rut
- 31:08Speaker 5: goes this next week, it's gonna be what you would
- 31:11Speaker 5: consider the full rut. Man.
- 31:13Speaker 3: That's exciting times, dude. I appreciate that it is.
- 31:15Speaker 2: It's a good time to be in the woods, man,
- 31:17Speaker 2: And I hope you get you big in here this
- 31:19Speaker 2: next week or.
- 31:19Speaker 5: So, you and me both. I hope everybody gets a
- 31:22Speaker 5: bit it's the greatest thing in the world, and it's
- 31:26Speaker 5: the greatest time. Even though it's hard on a bowl
- 31:29Speaker 5: hunter deer in the full rut, it's one of my
- 31:31Speaker 5: favorite times to be in the woods because it's so exciting.
- 31:35Speaker 5: You get to see a lot of action chasing bigger,
- 31:37Speaker 5: mature deer and that sort of thing. So it's a
- 31:40Speaker 5: great time. You's got to put in a lot of
- 31:42Speaker 5: sleeep time to bear with it and swing from fences.
- 31:46Speaker 2: That's it, man, you can't mess it with Michael. Really
- 31:48Speaker 2: appreciate the time, dude, and get after him.
- 31:51Speaker 5: We're gonna do it.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Let me tell you something.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Listening to some Southern voices talking about some giant bucks
- 31:57Speaker 2: gets me pumped. And that's what I need right now
- 31:59Speaker 2: because I've been out on the dumps. But guess what
- 32:01Speaker 2: empty it is misplaced. My feelings are misplaced because it
- 32:08Speaker 2: is my fault. It is not the November's fault. It's
- 32:10Speaker 2: not the deer's fault. They are out there to be had,
- 32:12Speaker 2: so I gotta go. I gotta get them, and if
- 32:14Speaker 2: you like to watch people, go get them. Young misel camera.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Michael Stole just had a video go out where he
- 32:23Speaker 2: is chasing some bucks and making some moves on buck betting,
- 32:26Speaker 2: which I think is because he's from Ohio. We don't
- 32:28Speaker 2: really do that in Texas, but Ohio. Man, he's all
- 32:31Speaker 2: about him some buck bedding.
