Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm at the bar waiting for Christine to show up
- 0:02Speaker 1: because we have a lunch meeting.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Yes.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Christine sends me a text. I'm five minutes away.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 0:09Speaker 3: She ain't five minutes away.
- 0:11Speaker 2: She's 25 minutes away. Yep.
- 0:14Speaker 3: That's what we're talking about. That didn't happen with you.
- 0:16Speaker 2: That's not me.
- 0:17Speaker 3: You're very punctual.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I will not do that. And if I tell you
- 0:19Speaker 2: I'm five minutes away, I'm literally five minutes away.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Sometimes us radio people will be like, I am eight
- 0:24Speaker 1: minutes and 22 seconds away.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yes. 8.22 out. I'll be there on top of the hour. Yes.
- 0:29Speaker 3: But seriously, what annoys you?
- 0:31Speaker 1: This is our conversation. Give us a text at 44363.
- 0:35Speaker 1: What just really gets under your skin when someone says,
- 0:39Speaker 1: like for me, it's the five-minute thing.
- 0:41Speaker 3: They're probably just leaving the house when they're five minutes away.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Right?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yes. And at what point are you waiting for someone
- 0:47Speaker 2: and you're like, okay, it's cool. It's New York. I
- 0:49Speaker 2: get it. People are late. Like 15 minutes. You're like, yeah,
- 0:51Speaker 2: I get it. At what point do you go, okay,
- 0:53Speaker 2: this is just rude.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Downright rude.
- 0:55Speaker 2: So researchers looked at that, Cubby, a survey of 2,000 adults.
- 0:58Speaker 2: 29 minutes, boom, is the cutoff point. That's when we're like, okay,
- 1:03Speaker 2: now I'm mad.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Just under 30, just under a half hour. Then after that,
- 1:06Speaker 3: you're really annoyed.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Then you're annoyed. And get this, people admit to their
- 1:11Speaker 2: biggest white lie in life is telling their friends they're
- 1:14Speaker 2: five minutes away when they're actually like just leaving the house.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Oh, I hate it.
- 1:19Speaker 2: So we get annoyed when we get those five minute
- 1:21Speaker 2: away texts because we know can't be trusted. We have
- 1:26Speaker 2: over a third of adults saying they know who in
- 1:29Speaker 2: their life tends to run late. So I'll tell you,
- 1:32Speaker 2: it could be an event, say you're the person who
- 1:34Speaker 2: runs late, starts at 7 when it really starts at 8.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Because we have to do the little mind games with you.
- 1:39Speaker 3: But only say that to people that you know run late.
- 1:40Speaker 2: That we know run late.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Okay, that's smart.
- 1:43Speaker 2: And it seems like we're running late more often now.
- 1:47Speaker 2: even with the smartphones, and the researchers think it's because
- 1:52Speaker 2: we can go, hey, sorry, running late, like we can
- 1:54Speaker 2: send a text.
- 1:55Speaker 1: You don't have to do a phone call because they
- 1:57Speaker 1: can't hear it in your voice that you're lying.
- 1:58Speaker 3: You can text. Yeah. Like you said, that's a good point.
- 2:01Speaker 2: We're not as timely, although most of us now would
- 2:04Speaker 2: prefer to catch up with a friend in person over
- 2:07Speaker 2: a drink than spend the evening texting. And a lot
- 2:11Speaker 2: of us are complaining that when we do get together,
- 2:13Speaker 2: We find it unacceptable if your friend is like, huh, what?
- 2:16Speaker 2: And they're always looking at their phone. Like, we consider
- 2:18Speaker 2: that to be very rude.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Well, Christine, I went on a first date with somebody
- 2:22Speaker 1: back in 2014.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:25Speaker 3: And they were 53 minutes late.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Oof. And you almost gave up on that somebody, huh? Yep.
- 2:32Speaker 3: And I married that somebody. And I'm still married today.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Her name is Coco. Yes. And our first date was
- 2:38Speaker 3: at Nobu downtown. Fancy.
- 2:41Speaker 2: And I can't.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I think it was 7 o'clock. We were scheduled to meet.
- 2:45Speaker 3: And she was, quote, running late.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Did she text you? Hey, I'm running late. Yes. I'm
- 2:50Speaker 2: five minutes away. Like, was she honest about the time?
- 2:52Speaker 3: Doing the whole boogie. Five, ten minutes. Hang in there.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Hang in there. And, you know, we met on a
- 2:56Speaker 3: dating app. So I'm thinking I'm being, like, played.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Like, blown off? Yeah.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Something's going to happen.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:02Speaker 3: And I eat a whole bowl of edamame by myself.
- 3:05Speaker 2: That's just sad.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I started off like, I'll have one. I'll have two.
- 3:10Speaker 3: She won't notice if I have three. Meanwhile, you can
- 3:14Speaker 3: see the bottom of the plate.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Oh, no. Should have had them clear that away.
- 3:18Speaker 3: But it came down.
- 3:19Speaker 1: She was coming in with a friend who was driving.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And the friend got caught up in traffic. And then
- 3:23Speaker 1: they didn't know where to park. So it was real.
- 3:26Speaker 1: But it was, I think, 52 minutes late.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I would have been getting nervous, too.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I almost bailed.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, because I get it. Like I said, you have
- 3:33Speaker 2: to allow... A lot of leeway, especially in New York
- 3:37Speaker 2: and northern Jersey. We're just so crowded. And you think
- 3:41Speaker 2: you're heading out early and you could legit run very late.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Now, at your home, are you the timekeeper when it
- 3:46Speaker 3: comes to Eric?
- 3:47Speaker 2: Oh, my goodness.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Yes.
- 3:49Speaker 1: If you have to be somewhere at 2 p.m. on
- 3:52Speaker 1: a Saturday, are you giving him a countdown beginning at 1?
- 3:56Speaker 2: I will tell him we need to start tackling this
- 3:59Speaker 2: a couple of days in advance. Like you say, 2 o'clock.
- 4:03Speaker 2: That could be early for Eric in his world if
- 4:05Speaker 2: he's getting home at 1 a.m. So a couple of
- 4:07Speaker 2: days out, I have to say, Eric, you know, we
- 4:09Speaker 2: have a matinee on Saturday at 2. That means a
- 4:11Speaker 2: hard out at noon. And he's like, OK, we can
- 4:16Speaker 2: do that. If I tell him, well, if we leave
- 4:19Speaker 2: between 12 and 1230, which in my head is like
- 4:21Speaker 2: we're OK if we leave at 1230, he will leave
- 4:23Speaker 2: at 1230. So I have to say hard out at
- 4:26Speaker 2: noon and then hope that he gets it together by 1230.
- 4:30Speaker 3: But he always cuts it close.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Oh, my goodness.
- 4:33Speaker 3: And you're stressing out.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I'm stressed because, say, it's like I told him 12.
- 4:38Speaker 2: It's like 11.55, and he's like, I'm just going to
- 4:40Speaker 2: hop in the shower. It's like, what?
- 4:43Speaker 3: Oh, you're already done. You're ready to rock.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. And you know how, like, it's worse when
- 4:47Speaker 2: you're waiting for someone? You've got to try and keep
- 4:49Speaker 2: your cool.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Oh, you're tapping your foot.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I'm dressed. I'm ready to go.
- 4:53Speaker 3: I'm walking around the kitchen.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I'm putting like extra plates up just to keep myself busy.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And everything's Archie's bed. We're good. We can go now.
- 5:00Speaker 2: We can go. And I'm watching like my app and
- 5:03Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, it's backing up at the Lincoln tunnel.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I hate that too.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And then he's all like, chill.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Like, okay, let's go. I don't know how they do it.
- 5:11Speaker 3: The chill people.
- 5:12Speaker 2: They're way more relaxed than us.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Cubby.
- 5:14Speaker 2: It's a, we need it. It's a balance.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:16Speaker 2: But I think with what we do for a living,
- 5:17Speaker 2: we're so super aware of timing.
- 5:19Speaker 1: If you can relate, please text us at 44363. And
- 5:24Speaker 1: if you're looking at the clock, it's 756. You have
- 5:26Speaker 1: four minutes until eight o'clock.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Oh, my goodness.
- 5:28Speaker 2: What?
- 5:28Speaker 3: Someone texted already?
- 5:29Speaker 2: No, you just don't want to panic.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Oh, I know.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I know.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh. I got to be there at eight.
- 5:33Speaker 3: You have four minutes right now.
