- 0:12really fascinating conversation from a recent Joe Rogan
- 0:15interview with a leading scientist in ancient DNA.
- 0:18Our mission here is to unpack some truly groundbreaking

- 0:24ethics of de extinction and uncover some surprising insights
- 0:28into animal behavior, human history, and, well, our
- 0:32relationship with the natural world.
- 0:33Yeah, it's quite a journey. We're looking at the work of
- 0:36someone who's really a modern day explorer in ancient DNA.
- 0:39She's the chief scientist officer at Colossal, which is,
- 0:41you know, right at the forefront of this de extinction work.
- 0:44What's really striking is how it blends this cutting edge science
- 0:48with these really bold, sometimes frankly controversial
- 0:52projects. And you'll see that blend woven
- 0:54through our discussion today. It raises some big questions.
- 0:57OK, so let's unpack that. The core of this work is ancient
- 1:01DNA, or paleogenomics. Basically, scientists go out,
- 1:04they dig up old stuff, bones, teeth, whatever, from thousands,
- 1:08maybe millions of years ago, and pull DNA out of it.
- 1:12And this field, it just keeps like rewriting what we thought
- 1:16we knew. It's constantly overturning old
- 1:18ideas. It really is.
- 1:19And, you know, one interesting angle is the personal
- 1:21motivation. There's this palpable
- 1:23frustration with academia sometimes the scarcity mindset,
- 1:28the gatekeeping. You can really slow things down,
- 1:30stifle innovation. Yeah, I can imagine.
- 1:32So moving from that world to a private venture like Colossal,
- 1:36it's partly about defending scientific integrity, pushing
- 1:39boundaries even if it challenges the old ways, making sure the
- 1:42science moves forward. And the actual field work sounds
- 1:44absolutely wild, like something out of an adventure story.
- 1:47There's this story about looking for mammoth bones on the ick pic
- 1:50Puck River in northern Alaska. Imagine being out there, the
- 1:53winds howling for days, keeping the mosquitoes away, and you
- 1:56start thinking people exaggerate.
- 1:59Then the wind stops and bam, the air is just thick with them.
- 2:03Super aggressive right? Apparently they saw a moose just
- 2:06plunging into freezing water every few steps to escape.
- 2:09These aren't normal mosquitoes. No, they're adapted.
- 2:12They can reproduce without blood, but they do way better
- 2:15with it so. They're relentless.
- 2:16Makes Texas mosquitoes seem kind of tame.
- 2:18Definitely. And Speaking of harrowing field
- 2:21work, there's another story about a Russian helicopter trip
- 2:24in Siberia and MI 8 from Hatanga.
- 2:27Oh boy. Pictures sitting on the gas
- 2:30tanks, missing windows, and the thing barely gets off the
- 2:33ground. The expedition dog Pasha
- 2:36apparently refused to get in. Smart dog.
- 2:38They called him the smartest person in our expedition.
- 2:41Wow, that's that's intense. It really highlights the risks
- 2:44they take and it makes you think, doesn't it, about past
- 2:47humans in those environments? How did they cope?
- 2:49You hear about reindeer domestication not just for meat
- 2:52but as like a a storage mechanism for nutrition, a
- 2:55walking pantry. A living larger.
- 2:58It's incredible, the ingenuity of the first people figuring out
- 3:01how to herd and milk them in those conditions.
- 3:04Amazing resourcefulness. Absolutely.
- 3:06It completely challenges the idea that these were just
- 3:09desolate lambs. These people had sophisticated
- 3:11ecological knowledge, real engineers of survival.
- 3:15And beyond the field work, ancient DNA is just rewriting
- 3:18huge chunks of human history, like the Amazon we used to
- 3:22think. Untouched rainforest, maybe
- 3:24small tribes. Right.
- 3:25The pristine myth. But now evidence of
- 3:28sophisticated grids, millions of people, huge settlements, all
- 3:32wiped out probably by European diseases, and the jungle just
- 3:36swallowed it all up. Yeah, Lidar imaging combined
- 3:39with the DNA tells an incredible story.
- 3:41You only see faint traces from the air now.
- 3:43You see hints of that even flying over Europe, old field
- 3:45patterns and things. And this connects to that common
- 3:47misconception about Jurassic Park.
- 3:49People think the movie started the field.
- 3:51Right, like science fiction came first.
- 3:53But it's the other way around. Michael Creighton was inspired
- 3:56by real work already happening, like Alan Wilson's group at
- 3:59Berkeley. They got ancient DNA from a
- 4:01quagga, an extinct zebra, back in 84.
- 4:04Wow, OK. The early claims about dinosaur
- 4:06DNA turned out to be contamination.
- 4:09Modern DNA getting in. Which brings us to how careful
- 4:13they have to be. These labs sound intense, like
- 4:15virus labs pushing air out, full suits, constant bleaching.
- 4:19Exactly. It's not the ancient stuff
- 4:21that's dangerous. It's us, our DNA.
- 4:24A single skin cell, a breath can ruin everything.
- 4:27Precisely. And that's where PCR, the
- 4:29plumber's chain reaction, was such a game changer.
- 4:31It lets you amplify tiny, tiny DNA fragments.
- 4:35And the bat, well, the crowning achievement was sequencing whole
- 4:38Neanderthal genomes. My husband was actually involved
- 4:42in that effort with this Fante Paibos team, who won the Nobel
- 4:44for it. I'm incredible getting the whole
- 4:46blueprint. And then Denisovans, a whole new
- 4:48type of ancient human found from just a tiny finger bone,
- 4:51completely redrew the family tree.
- 4:53Just amazing. And now there's Giuliani or the
- 4:55big head people from China. 300,000 to 50,000 years ago
- 4:59suggests even more interbreeding, more complexity.
- 5:01But. Then you still have mysteries
- 5:02like The Hobbit, people on Flores Island, Homo
- 5:05floresiensis. All right, the DNA there is just
- 5:08too degraded. Hot, humid climates are terrible
- 5:11for preservation. It makes you think about island
- 5:13evolution, right? Dwarfism.
- 5:15Gigantism. Like the mini elephants on
- 5:17Flores, but also the giant Komodo Dragons.
- 5:19Terrifying creatures. Yeah, remember that bizarre
- 5:23story about Sharon Stone's ex-husband at the zoo?
- 5:27Vaguely like somebody about shoes.
- 5:29Yeah, they told him to take off his white tennis shoes, worried
- 5:32the Dragons would think they were rats or something.
- 5:34But then his barefoot looked tasty and bam got.
- 5:37Bitten. Oh my goodness.
- 5:39Yeah, that's memorable. Shows you can't predict
- 5:41everything. Exactly.
- 5:42And, it reminds me, we also touched on other animal quirks,
- 5:45like giraffes apparently considered sort of dumb in
- 5:47captivity. Really.
- 5:48Yeah, but in the wild, incredibly ecologically
- 5:51intelligent, perfectly adapted are definitions of smart or just
- 5:55so human centric, you know, that's.
- 5:56A great point which leads us perfectly into Colossal's work.
- 5:59I actually got to see their direwolves, Romulus, Remus and
- 6:02Klezy. Yeah, it was extraordinary.
- 6:05They look different, bigger, more muscular and this unique
- 6:08light coat. Seeing Klezy's birth, it was
- 6:11just genuine wonder, seeing something extinct brought back.
- 6:15It must have been powerful, and it absolutely forces you to
- 6:19confront the ethical side, doesn't it?
- 6:20Like, are we playing God here? Are humans really the ones to
- 6:23decide who lives and dies? There's a potential arrogance
- 6:26there. A huge question, and it ties
- 6:28right into the whole invasive species nightmare.
- 6:31I mean, look at Florida, half a million Burmese pythons wiping
- 6:34out 90% of the mammals in the Everglades total disaster.
- 6:38Or Hawaii introducing rosy wolf snails to eat other invasive
- 6:41snails, but they just ate all the native ones instead.
- 6:44Catastrophe. Right.
- 6:45Good intentions, terrible outcomes.
- 6:47Even had people seriously suggesting bringing honey
- 6:49Badgers to Florida or that crazy early 20th century idea of
- 6:53hippos in the US for lake cow bacon.
- 6:56It's almost comical the mistakes we've made.
- 6:58And that history is exactly why caution is paramount.
- 7:02But it's also why these new technologies are potentially so
- 7:05valuable if used right. Colossal's work isn't just about
- 7:09bringing things back for novelty.
- 7:10It's tied to conservation. Think genetic rescue.
- 7:14OK. I like with the Florida
- 7:16Panthers. Exactly, they were critically
- 7:18inbred down to maybe 30 animals, bringing in a few Texas
- 7:21Panthers. Save them by boosting genetic
- 7:24diversity. Colossal hopes to use similar
- 7:27techniques refined through the direwolf work for things like
- 7:30the Red Wolf Project, using DNA editing to make endangered
- 7:34species more resilient. But it's.
- 7:36Still complicated. Look at the wolf reintroduction
- 7:38in Colorado. Very contentious.
- 7:40Yeah, ballot box biology City folks voting for wolves that
- 7:43ranchers have to live with, and they brought in wolves known to
- 7:46prey on cattle from Oregon. Seems like asking for trouble.
- 7:49It's. A classic conflict.
- 7:51Yellowstone was different, more of a success story for that
- 7:53specific ecosystem. But you can't just copy and
- 7:56paste these things. Absolutely not, which is why
- 7:59Colossal is being so careful with the direwolves.
- 8:02They aren't being released into the wild, they're on a secure,
- 8:05monitored preserve. Cameras everywhere.
- 8:07Hormonal contraception, Constant study.
- 8:10So no rogue direwolves running around.
- 8:13Definitely not. And for the critics saying they
- 8:14aren't real direwolves, well, they're engineered using ancient
- 8:17genomes from 72,000 to 13,000 years ago.
- 8:21The goal is to replicate key traits like that light coat
- 8:25color that came directly from the ancient DNA.
- 8:28Nobody expected that from just bones.
- 8:30It's about creating an ecological proxy based on the
- 8:33best data we have. So what else is on the list
- 8:36besides Dire Wolves? Well, the ones they've announced
- 8:38are the woolly mammoth, the Thylacine, Tasmanian tiger and
- 8:41the dodo. But they have DNA data for lots
- 8:44more. American cheetah, the huge short
- 8:46faced bear, 12 feet tall. Longhorn bison, Irish elk, North
- 8:51American camels, even a giant 5 foot Beaver.
- 8:54Imagine that. A library of lost life.
- 8:56It really messes with your timeline of extinction, doesn't
- 8:59it? Mammoths living just 4000 years
- 9:00ago on an island, right? Much later than we used to
- 9:03think. And maybe horses surviving in
- 9:05North America longer than presumed.
- 9:07Like Native American traditions always said, environmental DNA
- 9:10is finding traces. It really highlights how much we
- 9:13don't know. Requires real humility.
- 9:15The fossil record is so sparse. Think about Gigantopithecus the
- 9:19giant ape, the Bigfoot ancestor mostly known from teeth found in
- 9:23Chinese apothecary shops sold as dragon bones.
- 9:27Or those strange Peruvian alien mummies with three fingers and
- 9:30toes. Ancient DNA might tell us what
- 9:33they really were. So much mystery still.
- 9:36And this all inevitably circles back to the ethics of human gene
- 9:39editing, too. You have the Hijiang Kui case in
- 9:42China. Editing babies for HIV
- 9:43resistance. Huge controversy.
- 9:46Germline editing very different. Right, different from
- 9:48therapeutic somatic editing like baby KJ being cured of a
- 9:51metabolic disease that feels more like medicine, but the
- 9:54lines get blurry. They do and engineering complex
- 9:57traits like smartness. What does that even mean?
- 10:00Intelligence isn't one thing and evolution isn't a straight line.
- 10:03And the playing God argument? Well, humans have been shaping
- 10:07life for millennia through domestication, farming, even
- 10:10conservation choices. Deciding not to use powerful new
- 10:13tools also has ethical weight, especially with extinction rates
- 10:16soaring. What if we can save a species or
- 10:19cure disease and choose not to? Could AI help maybe analyze the
- 10:23consequences of rewilding without our human biases and
- 10:27financial motives getting in the way?
- 10:28That's a fascinating thought. The hope is certainly to use
- 10:31these tools responsibly for real conservation challenges.
- 10:34Making Hawaiian honey creepers resistant to avian malaria or
- 10:37corals resistant to bleaching. Building a future that's
- 10:40biodiverse and includes thriving human populations.
- 10:43Coexistence and repair. So for you listening, it leaves

- 10:48Given how little we know about the past and how powerful these
- 10:51new tools are, what are our responsibilities?
- 10:53And thinking ahead, could genetic interventions become so
- 10:57common that regular children become novel?

- 11:03necessary? Lots to ponder.
