- 0:08Speaker 3: On w R.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, let's take some calls. Let's go to uh Patricia
- 0:14Speaker 1: in Brooklyn. Patricia, how you doing?
- 0:17Speaker 4: Oh, dear Mark, listen. I wrote to the President and
- 0:21Speaker 4: I you know, I said that I love him, you know.
- 0:24Speaker 5: Stuff like that.
- 0:25Speaker 3: But I also.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Absolutely mentioned you. You got me through the pandemic. I
- 0:32Speaker 4: mean you got me through the craziest times where I thought,
- 0:35Speaker 4: what dall is going on? I got the most beautiful
- 0:39Speaker 4: letter back from the President. Don't think he doesn't know
- 0:42Speaker 4: what you do for the New Yorkers. God bless you, Mark.
- 0:46Speaker 4: I love you.
- 0:47Speaker 1: What did he say?
- 0:50Speaker 4: Thank you for you? I mean, I'm just powerful. Thank
- 0:53Speaker 4: you for your letter. It was you know, it was.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Kind of powerful. Thank you for your letter. What a response?
- 1:01Speaker 4: Are you making fun of me? That's none nice?
- 1:03Speaker 1: A little hellottle?
- 1:04Speaker 4: Well, you know, it's a letter all keep until the
- 1:09Speaker 4: day I die. Yeah, And I thank you for everything
- 1:12Speaker 4: you have done for us.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Well, I thank you. I thank you for listening. You're
- 1:17Speaker 1: a good friend of ours and thanks for listening.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Thank you, Thank you so much more.
- 1:23Speaker 1: All right, take care thanks. You know, if you write
- 1:25Speaker 1: a letter to the president, to any president, you'll get
- 1:28Speaker 1: a letter back. I don't know if he sees it
- 1:30Speaker 1: or if he writes it, but it's a great thing
- 1:32Speaker 1: to do. Now, if you go over there, two blocks
- 1:36Speaker 1: and around the corner, there's a shirt maker and it's
- 1:39Speaker 1: a smart thing to do. This shirt maker writes to
- 1:41Speaker 1: every president whoever's in office, and sends like four shirts,
- 1:46Speaker 1: and a letter comes back from the president. It's not
- 1:48Speaker 1: really from the President's somebody in the White House. Dear
- 1:51Speaker 1: so and so, thank you for the shirts. I love them.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I'm going to wear them all the time. So then
- 1:55Speaker 1: he puts these up. Now the president has never seen
- 1:57Speaker 1: the letter, never seen the shirts. He puts them up
- 2:00Speaker 1: in his window with a big sign. Shirt maker to
- 2:02Speaker 1: four presidents. So yeah, I just gave a lot of
- 2:05Speaker 1: people a lot of ideas, right, and you'll get a
- 2:07Speaker 1: letter back. Let's go to Bill and Lafayette, New Jersey. Bill,
- 2:09Speaker 1: how you doing.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Okay?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Mark?
- 2:12Speaker 5: You know you were talking about the Oscars last night,
- 2:14Speaker 5: which I did not watch. When talent used to be
- 2:18Speaker 5: real talent, when you used to have Jonathan Winter's Johnny Carson,
- 2:24Speaker 5: like you said, and the good. I don't know if
- 2:26Speaker 5: you remember the first Today Show was Hunted by Dave
- 2:29Speaker 5: Garaway and then Jack Barr. But you had to have
- 2:32Speaker 5: Gun Will Travel, you had Mickey Mouse, Ed Sullivan, Gun Smoke,
- 2:38Speaker 5: Lassie Rin Tintin.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Well, I gotta be honest. You know some of those
- 2:42Speaker 1: shows they weren't. They called it the Golden Age that
- 2:45Speaker 1: Lassie I never understood. I mean there was about this
- 2:49Speaker 1: kid who kept falling down a well. This kid got
- 2:51Speaker 1: stuck under a tree every two seconds. The kid had
- 2:54Speaker 1: to be rescued by Lassie. The dog was smarter than
- 2:57Speaker 1: the kid.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Yeah, but you know what it was about. It was
- 3:01Speaker 3: about innocence and kids today that were my that are
- 3:05Speaker 3: eight nine ten. Back then, I was allowed to keep
- 3:09Speaker 3: my innocence and not be soiled by the crap that you.
- 3:14Speaker 5: Seev on TV today.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point. That's a very good point.
- 3:18Speaker 1: You know, there was an innocence to it. You know,
- 3:20Speaker 1: like Breaking Bad is a brilliant show. It's as good
- 3:23Speaker 1: as anything ever on television. But you're right, it's so dirty, disgusting, horrifying.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I mean, you watch a few episodes of that, you
- 3:30Speaker 1: have nightmares all night. Let's go to Mike in Florida. Mike,
- 3:34Speaker 1: how you doing, Good morning, Mark, that's Mike.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I'm with you on some of those old shows. I
- 3:41Speaker 2: watch them down here, Bailey and Boy, some of them
- 3:44Speaker 2: are really rotten there, so stiff and stilted. But getting
- 3:50Speaker 2: back to the Oscars, by the way, I think Ed
- 3:52Speaker 2: is Ed Harris, who, to your point, nobody remembers as
- 3:55Speaker 2: an actor.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Oh I know who he was.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 1: It was a pretty good actor. Glengarry, Glenn row Us
- 4:00Speaker 1: and all the right stuff I think was right.
- 4:03Speaker 2: The right stuff. I was thinking of Polity Team, the
- 4:05Speaker 2: right stuff. Okay, but you know you're you're an m C,
- 4:09Speaker 2: and you know, you know, when Hope did it and
- 4:12Speaker 2: when Carson did it, they would have quit the essential
- 4:14Speaker 2: mcs to these events. They moved it along, you know.
- 4:17Speaker 2: They know they're playing to like a dumb, needy, vapid audience,
- 4:21Speaker 2: and they kept this stuff simple and it was much
- 4:24Speaker 2: more enjoyable.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Yeah. I think it's just it was different back then.
- 4:28Speaker 1: We all knew who everybody was. Today it's all fragmented.
- 4:31Speaker 1: You don't know who any of these people are.
- 4:33Speaker 2: That's true, a really good point. I don't know who
- 4:36Speaker 2: any of them are.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Well, thanks for calling. That's the problem.
- 4:40Speaker 1: It's so fragmented. You don't know who anybody is anymore,
- 4:43Speaker 1: even when you watch it. If you start watching the
- 4:45Speaker 1: series and you love it, you tell people about it,
- 4:47Speaker 1: I don't know what you're talking about. They'll tell you
- 4:50Speaker 1: about the series they're watching. You never heard of that one.
- 4:53Speaker 1: It's a real problem now. Same thing with the radio.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Look at podcasts. Many podcast there are I think it's
- 5:01Speaker 1: two million now. There are two million podcasts out there
- 5:05Speaker 1: right now. By the way, this show ends up this
- 5:07Speaker 1: week and almost every week in the top fifty out
- 5:10Speaker 1: of those two million. But there's two million podcasts and
- 5:14Speaker 1: nobody can keep track of all of them. You know.
- 5:18Speaker 1: The other thing we're talking about, that golden age of television,
- 5:22Speaker 1: Cause you watch I Love Lucy and The Dick Van
- 5:24Speaker 1: Dyke Show, and you ed saw me. Wow, it was
- 5:27Speaker 1: a golden age till you're forgetting there were hundreds of
- 5:30Speaker 1: shows back on. Back then. You're only seeing like the
- 5:33Speaker 1: top twenty of the hundred. There were plenty of bad
- 5:36Speaker 1: shows back then. There was a million other sitcoms that stunk.
- 5:40Speaker 1: If you watch them today, you can't believe how bad
- 5:42Speaker 1: they are. So you're only saying the absolute cream of
- 5:45Speaker 1: the crop from the fifties and the sixties. In the seventies,
- 5:48Speaker 1: you know, you see some of the seventies shows.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Boy were they great.
- 5:51Speaker 1: But go back to actually the nineteen seventies, ninety percent
- 5:54Speaker 1: of what was on television was so horrifying it could
- 5:56Speaker 1: never be real anywhere. It was just bad, cheesy stuff. Hey,
- 6:00Speaker 1: the greatest columnist in the country, Michael Goodwin, he'll be
- 6:04Speaker 1: with us next, and he'd been in the second hour.
- 6:07Speaker 1: We'll get to Johnny Carson, the side of him. You
- 6:10Speaker 1: may not know there was a dark side there you
- 6:12Speaker 1: We'll get to that coming up in the second hour.
- 6:15Speaker 1: But Michael Goodwy'll be with us next on seven ten
- 6:17Speaker 1: wor
