Speaker 1: Chapter three, wrecked on a desert island. After the stop,
0:07
Speaker 1: we made on to the southward continually for ten or
0:10
Speaker 1: twelve days, living very sparingly on our provisions, which began
0:16
Speaker 1: to abate very much, and going no oftener to the
0:20
Speaker 1: shore than we were obliged to for fresh water. My
0:24
Speaker 1: design in this was to make the river Gambia or Senegal,
0:29
Speaker 1: that is to say, anywhere about the Cape de Verde,
0:33
Speaker 1: where I was in hopes to meet with some European ship.
0:37
Speaker 1: And if I did not, I knew not what course
0:40
Speaker 1: I had to take, but to seek for the islands
0:44
Speaker 1: or perish there among the negroes. I knew that all
0:48
Speaker 1: the ships from Europe which sailed either to the coast
0:51
Speaker 1: of Guinea or to Brazil, or to the East Indies,
0:55
Speaker 1: made this cape or those islands. And in a word,
1:00
Speaker 1: I put the whole of my fortune upon this single point,
1:04
Speaker 1: either that I must meet with some ship or must perish.
1:10
Speaker 1: When I had pursued this resolution, about ten days longer,
1:13
Speaker 1: as I have said, I began to see that the
1:15
Speaker 1: land was inhabited, And in two or three places as
1:18
Speaker 1: we sailed by, we saw people stand upon the shore
1:22
Speaker 1: to look at us. We could also perceive that they
1:25
Speaker 1: were quite black and naked. I was once inclined to
1:30
Speaker 1: have gone on shore to them, but Shurey was my
1:34
Speaker 1: better counselor, and said to me, no go, no go. However,
1:39
Speaker 1: I hauled in nearer the shore that I might to
1:42
Speaker 1: talk to them, and I found that they ran along
1:46
Speaker 1: the shore by me a good way. I observed that
1:50
Speaker 1: they had no weapons in their hand, except one which
1:53
Speaker 1: had a long slender stick, which Shurry said was a lance,
1:59
Speaker 1: and that could target them a great way with good aim.
2:04
Speaker 1: So I kept at a distance, but talked with them
2:06
Speaker 1: by signs as well as I could, and particularly made
2:10
Speaker 1: signs for something to eat. They beckoned me stop my
2:15
Speaker 1: boat and they would fetch me some meat. Upon this
2:19
Speaker 1: I lowered the top of my sail and lay by,
2:22
Speaker 1: and two of them ran up into the country, and
2:24
Speaker 1: unless then half an hour came back and brought with
2:28
Speaker 1: them two pieces of dried flesh and some corn, such
2:32
Speaker 1: as is the produce of their country. But we neither
2:36
Speaker 1: knew what the one or the other was. However, we
2:39
Speaker 1: were willing to accept it, but how to come at
2:42
Speaker 1: it was our next dispute, for I would not venture
2:45
Speaker 1: on shore to them and they were as much afraid
2:48
Speaker 1: of us, but they took a safe way for us
2:52
Speaker 1: all for they brought it to the shore and laid
2:55
Speaker 1: it down, and went and stood a great way off
2:58
Speaker 1: till we fetched it on board, and then came close
3:01
Speaker 1: to us again. We made signs of thanks to them,
3:06
Speaker 1: for we had nothing to make them amends, but an
3:09
Speaker 1: opportunity offered that very instant to oblige them wonderfully, For
3:15
Speaker 1: while we were lined by the shore, came two mighty creatures,
3:19
Speaker 1: one pursuing the other as we took it with great
3:22
Speaker 1: fury from the mountains towards the sea. Whether it was
3:27
Speaker 1: the male pursuing the female, or whether they were in
3:30
Speaker 1: sport or in rage, we could not tell any more
3:34
Speaker 1: than we could tell whether it was usual or strange.
3:37
Speaker 1: But I believe it was the latter, because in the
3:41
Speaker 1: first place, those ravenous creatures seldom appeared but in the night.
3:45
Speaker 1: And in the second place we found the people terribly frightened,
3:49
Speaker 1: especially the women. The man that had the lance or
3:53
Speaker 1: dart did not fly from them, but the rest did. However,
3:57
Speaker 1: as the two creatures ran directly into the water, they
4:00
Speaker 1: did not offer to fall upon any of the negroes,
4:03
Speaker 1: but plunged themselves into the sea and swam about as
4:07
Speaker 1: if they had come there for diversion. At last one
4:11
Speaker 1: of them began to come nearer our boat than at
4:14
Speaker 1: first I expected. But I lay ready for him, for
4:17
Speaker 1: I had loaded my gun with all possible expedition, and
4:21
Speaker 1: bade Shui load both the others. As soon as he
4:25
Speaker 1: came fairly within my reach, I fired and shot him
4:29
Speaker 1: directly in the head. Immediately he sank down into the water,
4:33
Speaker 1: but rose instantly and plunged up and down as if
4:36
Speaker 1: he were struggling for life, and so indeed he was.
4:40
Speaker 1: He immediately made to the shore, but between the wound,
4:44
Speaker 1: which was his mortal hurt, and the strangling of the water,
4:48
Speaker 1: he died just before he reached the shore. It is
4:53
Speaker 1: impossible to express the astonishment of these poor creatures at
4:57
Speaker 1: the noise and fire of my gun. Some of them
5:00
Speaker 1: were even ready to die for fear, and fell down
5:02
Speaker 1: as dead with the very terror. And when they saw
5:06
Speaker 1: the creature dead and sunk in the water, and that
5:09
Speaker 1: I made signs to them to come to the shore,
5:12
Speaker 1: they took heart and came and began to search for
5:15
Speaker 1: the creature. I found him by his blood staining the water,
5:21
Speaker 1: and by the help of a rope which I slung
5:24
Speaker 1: round him and gave the negroes to haul. They dragged
5:27
Speaker 1: him on shore and found that it was the most
5:30
Speaker 1: curious leopard, spotted and fine to an admirable degree, and
5:36
Speaker 1: the negroes held up their hands with admiration to think
5:40
Speaker 1: what it was I had killed him with the other
5:43
Speaker 1: creature frighted with the flash of fire and the noise
5:46
Speaker 1: of the gun, swam on shore and ran up directly
5:49
Speaker 1: to the mountains from whence they came. Nor could I,
5:52
Speaker 1: at that distance know what it was. I found quickly
5:57
Speaker 1: the Negroes wished to eat the flesh of this creature,
5:59
Speaker 1: so I was willing to have them take it as
6:02
Speaker 1: a favor from me, which when I made signs to
6:06
Speaker 1: them that they might take them, they were very thankful,
6:08
Speaker 1: for immediately they fell to work with him, and though
6:12
Speaker 1: they had no knife, yet, with a sharpened piece of wood,
6:15
Speaker 1: they took off his skin as readily, and much more
6:18
Speaker 1: readily than we could have done with a knife. They
6:22
Speaker 1: offered me some of the flesh, which I declined, pointing
6:25
Speaker 1: out that I would give it to them, but made
6:28
Speaker 1: signs for the skin, which they gave me very freely,
6:31
Speaker 1: and brought me a great deal more of their provisions,
6:34
Speaker 1: which though I did not understand yet, I accepted. I
6:39
Speaker 1: then made signs to them for some water, and held
6:41
Speaker 1: out one of the jars to them, turning the bottom
6:44
Speaker 1: upward to show that it was empty, and that I
6:46
Speaker 1: wanted to have it filled. They immediately called to some
6:51
Speaker 1: of their friends, and there came two women and brought
6:54
Speaker 1: a great vessel made of earth and burnt as I
6:57
Speaker 1: supposed in the sun. This they said down to me
7:01
Speaker 1: as before, and I sent sury on shore with my
7:04
Speaker 1: jars and filled them all. Three the women were as
7:08
Speaker 1: naked as the men. I was now furnished with roots
7:13
Speaker 1: and corn such as it was in water, and leaving
7:16
Speaker 1: my friendly negroes, I made forward for about eleven days
7:20
Speaker 1: more without offering to go near the shore, till I
7:23
Speaker 1: saw the land run out a great length to the sea,
7:26
Speaker 1: at about the distance of four or five leagues before me,
7:30
Speaker 1: and the sea being very calm, I kept a large
7:33
Speaker 1: offing to make this point at length, doubling the point
7:38
Speaker 1: at about two leagues from the land, I saw plainly
7:41
Speaker 1: land on the other side to seaward then I concluded,
7:46
Speaker 1: as it was most certain indeed, that this was the
7:49
Speaker 1: Cape de Verde, and those the islands called from thence
7:54
Speaker 1: Cape de Verde Islands. However, they were at a great distance,
7:59
Speaker 1: and I could not tell well what I had best
8:02
Speaker 1: to do, for if I should be taken with the
8:05
Speaker 1: fresh of wind, I might neither reach one or other
8:10
Speaker 1: in this dilemma. As I was very pensive, I stepped
8:13
Speaker 1: into the cabin and sat down, surey having the helm,
8:17
Speaker 1: when on a sudden the boy cried out, master Master
8:21
Speaker 1: a ship with a sail. And the foolish boy was
8:24
Speaker 1: frighted out of his wits, thinking it must be some
8:27
Speaker 1: of his master ships sent to pursue us. But I
8:31
Speaker 1: knew we were far enough out of their reach. I
8:34
Speaker 1: jumped out of the cabin and immediately saw not only
8:37
Speaker 1: the ship, but that it was a Portuguese ship, and,
8:40
Speaker 1: as I thought, was bound to the coast of Guinea
8:44
Speaker 1: for negroes. But when I observed the course she steered,
8:48
Speaker 1: I was soon convinced they were bound some other way,
8:51
Speaker 1: and did not design to come any nearer to the
8:53
Speaker 1: shore upon which I stretched out to sea as much
8:57
Speaker 1: as I could, resolving to speak with them if possis.
9:01
Speaker 1: With all the sale I could make, I found I
9:04
Speaker 1: should not be able to come in their way, but
9:06
Speaker 1: that they would be gone by before I could make
9:09
Speaker 1: any signal to them. But after I had crowded to
9:12
Speaker 1: the utmost and began to despair, they it seems, saw
9:16
Speaker 1: by the help of their glasses that it was some
9:18
Speaker 1: European boat, which they supposed must belong to some ship
9:22
Speaker 1: that was lost. So they shortened sailed to let me
9:25
Speaker 1: come up. I was encouraged with this, and as I
9:29
Speaker 1: had my patrons ancient on board, I made a waft
9:32
Speaker 1: of it to them for a signal of distress, and
9:36
Speaker 1: fired a gun, both which they saw, for they told
9:40
Speaker 1: me they saw the smoke, though they did not hear
9:43
Speaker 1: the gun. Upon these signals, they very kindly brought to
9:47
Speaker 1: and lay by for me, and in about three hours
9:51
Speaker 1: time I came up with them. They asked me what
9:55
Speaker 1: I was in Portuguese, and in Spanish and in French,
9:58
Speaker 1: but I understood none of them. But at last a
10:02
Speaker 1: Scotch sailor who was on board called to me, and
10:05
Speaker 1: I answered him and told him I was an Englishman,
10:08
Speaker 1: that I had made my escape out of slavery from
10:12
Speaker 1: the moors at Sali. They then bade me come on board,
10:16
Speaker 1: and very kindly took me in and all my goods.
10:20
Speaker 1: It was an inexpressible joy to me, which anyone will
10:23
Speaker 1: believe that I was thus delivered as I esteemed it,
10:27
Speaker 1: from such a miserable and hopeless condition as I was in.
10:31
Speaker 1: And I immediately offered all I had to the captain
10:34
Speaker 1: of the ship as a return for my deliverance. But
10:38
Speaker 1: he generously told me he would take nothing from me,
10:41
Speaker 1: but that all I had should be delivered safe to
10:44
Speaker 1: me when I came to the Brazils. For says he,
10:48
Speaker 1: I have saved your life on no other terms than
10:51
Speaker 1: I would be glad to be saved myself. And it may,
10:55
Speaker 1: one time or other be my lot to be taken
10:57
Speaker 1: up in the same condition, said he. When I carry
11:02
Speaker 1: you to the Brazils, so great away from your own country,
11:05
Speaker 1: if I should take from you what you have, you
11:08
Speaker 1: will be starved there, And then I only take away
11:12
Speaker 1: that life I have given. No no, says he signor inglese,
11:17
Speaker 1: mister Englishman. I will carry you thither in charity, and
11:22
Speaker 1: those things which help to buy your subsistence there and
11:25
Speaker 1: your passage home again as he was charitable in his proposal,
11:31
Speaker 1: so he was just in the performance to a tittle,
11:35
Speaker 1: for he ordered the Sevan that none should touch anything
11:38
Speaker 1: that I had. Then he took everything into his own
11:42
Speaker 1: possession and gave me back an exact inventory of them,
11:45
Speaker 1: that I might have them, even to my three earthen jars.
11:49
Speaker 1: As to my boat, it was a very good one,
11:52
Speaker 1: and that he saw and told me he would buy
11:56
Speaker 1: it of me for his ship's use, and asked me
11:59
Speaker 1: what I would have for it. I told him he
12:02
Speaker 1: had been so generous to me in everything that I
12:05
Speaker 1: could not offer to make any price of the boat,
12:07
Speaker 1: but left it entirely to him, upon which he told
12:11
Speaker 1: me he would give me a note of hand to
12:13
Speaker 1: pay me eighty pieces of eight for it at Brazil,
12:18
Speaker 1: and when it came there, if any one offered to
12:21
Speaker 1: give more, he would make it up. He offered me
12:24
Speaker 1: also sixty pieces of eight more for my boy Surey,
12:29
Speaker 1: which I was loath to take. Not that I was
12:31
Speaker 1: unwilling to let the captain have him, but I was
12:34
Speaker 1: very loath to sell the poor boy's liberty, who had
12:37
Speaker 1: assisted me so faithfully in procuring my own. However, when
12:42
Speaker 1: I let him know my reason. He owned it to
12:44
Speaker 1: be just and offered me this medium that he would
12:48
Speaker 1: give the boy an obligation to set him free in
12:51
Speaker 1: ten years if he turned Christian upon this, and surely
12:56
Speaker 1: saying he was willing to go with him, I let
12:58
Speaker 1: the captain have him. We had a very good voyage
13:02
Speaker 1: to the Brazils, and I arrived in the Bay de
13:04
Speaker 1: Todos Losantos or All Saints Bay, in about twenty two
13:09
Speaker 1: days after. And now I was once again delivered from
13:14
Speaker 1: the most miserable of all conditions of life. And what
13:18
Speaker 1: to do next with myself? I was to consider the
13:22
Speaker 1: generous treatment the captain gave me. I can never enough remember.
13:27
Speaker 1: He would take nothing of me for my passage. Gave
13:30
Speaker 1: me twenty ducats for the leopard skin and forty for
13:33
Speaker 1: the lion skin which I had in my boat, and
13:36
Speaker 1: caused everything I had in the ship to be punctually
13:40
Speaker 1: delivered to me, and what I was willing to sell
13:43
Speaker 1: he bought of me, such as the case of bottles,
13:46
Speaker 1: two of my guns, and a piece of the lumpum beeswax,
13:50
Speaker 1: for I had made candles. Of the rest. In a word,
13:54
Speaker 1: I made about two hundred and twenty pieces of eight
13:57
Speaker 1: of all my cargo, and with this stock I went
14:01
Speaker 1: on shore in the Brazils. I had not been long
14:05
Speaker 1: here before I was recommended to the house of a good,
14:07
Speaker 1: honest man like himself, who had an Inhano as they
14:12
Speaker 1: call it, that is, a plantation and a sugar house.
14:16
Speaker 1: I lived with him some time and acquainted myself, by
14:20
Speaker 1: that means, with the manner of planting and making of sugar,
14:24
Speaker 1: and seeing how well the planters lived and how they
14:26
Speaker 1: got rich. Suddenly I resolved, if I could get a
14:30
Speaker 1: license to settle there, I would turn planter among them.
14:33
Speaker 1: Resolving in the meantime to find out some way to
14:36
Speaker 1: get my money, which I had left in London remitted
14:39
Speaker 1: to me to this purpose, getting a kind of letter
14:44
Speaker 1: of naturalization. I purchased as much land that was uncured
14:49
Speaker 1: as my money would reach, and formed a plan for
14:52
Speaker 1: my plantation and settlement such a wan as might be
14:56
Speaker 1: suitable to the stock which I proposed to myself to
14:59
Speaker 1: receive from England. I had a neighbor of Portuguese of Lisbon,
15:05
Speaker 1: but born of English parents, whose name was Wells, and
15:10
Speaker 1: in much such circumstances as I was, I called him
15:13
Speaker 1: my neighbor, because his plantation lay next to mine, and
15:17
Speaker 1: as we went on very sociably together, my stock was
15:22
Speaker 1: but low as well as his, and we rather planted
15:26
Speaker 1: for food than anything else. For about two years, however,
15:30
Speaker 1: we began to increase in our land began to come
15:33
Speaker 1: into order, so that the third year we planted some
15:36
Speaker 1: tobacco and made each of us a large piece of
15:39
Speaker 1: ground ready for planting canes in the year to come.
15:43
Speaker 1: But we both wanted help, and now I found more
15:47
Speaker 1: than before. I had done wrong in parting with my boy, surey,
15:52
Speaker 1: But alas for me to do wrong that never did right,
15:58
Speaker 1: was no great wonder. I hailed no remedy, but to
16:02
Speaker 1: go on. I had got into an employment quite remote
16:06
Speaker 1: to my genius, and directly contrary to the life I
16:09
Speaker 1: delighted in, and for which I forsook my father's house
16:13
Speaker 1: and broke through all his good advice. Nay, I was
16:17
Speaker 1: coming into the very middle station, or upper degree of
16:19
Speaker 1: low life, which my father advised me to before, and
16:23
Speaker 1: which if I resolved to go on with, I might
16:26
Speaker 1: as well have stayed at home and never have fatigued
16:29
Speaker 1: myself in the world as I had done. And I
16:33
Speaker 1: used often to say to myself, I could have done
16:37
Speaker 1: this as well in England among my friends, as I
16:41
Speaker 1: have gone five thousand thousand miles off to do it
16:44
Speaker 1: among strangers and savages in a wilderness, and at such
16:47
Speaker 1: a distance as never to hear from any part of
16:50
Speaker 1: the world that had the least knowledge of me. In
16:54
Speaker 1: this manner, I used to look upon my condition with
16:57
Speaker 1: the utmost regret. I had no ready to converse with
17:01
Speaker 1: but now and then this neighbor, no work to be
17:05
Speaker 1: done but by the labor of my hands. And I
17:08
Speaker 1: used to say, I lived just like a man cast
17:11
Speaker 1: away upon some desolate island that had nobody there but himself.
17:18
Speaker 1: But how just has it been? And how should all
17:21
Speaker 1: men reflect that when they compare their present conditions with
17:25
Speaker 1: others that are worse, Heaven may oblige them to make
17:29
Speaker 1: the exchange, and be convinced of their former felicity by
17:34
Speaker 1: their experience. I say, how just has it been that
17:39
Speaker 1: the true solitary life I reflected on in an island
17:43
Speaker 1: of mere desolation should be my lot, who had so
17:49
Speaker 1: often unjustly compared it with the life which I then
17:52
Speaker 1: led in which had I continued, I had in all
17:56
Speaker 1: probability been exceeding prosperous and rich. I was in some
18:03
Speaker 1: degree settled in my measures for carrying on the plantation.
18:07
Speaker 1: Before my kind friend, the captain of the ship that
18:10
Speaker 1: took me up at sea, went back for the ship,
18:13
Speaker 1: remained there in providing his lady and preparing for his
18:16
Speaker 1: voyage nearly three months. When telling him what little stock
18:21
Speaker 1: I had left behind me in London, he gave me
18:24
Speaker 1: this friendly and sincere advice. Signor Inglese says he for
18:30
Speaker 1: so he always called me, if you will give me
18:33
Speaker 1: letters and a procuration informed to me with orders to
18:38
Speaker 1: the person who has your money in London to send
18:40
Speaker 1: your effects to Lisbon, to such persons as I shall direct,
18:45
Speaker 1: and in such goods as are proper for this country,
18:49
Speaker 1: I will bring you the produce of them, God willing
18:51
Speaker 1: at my return. But since human affairs are all subject
18:55
Speaker 1: to changes and disasters, I would have you give orders
18:59
Speaker 1: but for one one hundred pounds sterling, which you say
19:02
Speaker 1: is half your stock, and let the hazard be run
19:05
Speaker 1: for the first, so that if it comes safe, you
19:09
Speaker 1: may order the rest the same way, and if it miscarry,
19:13
Speaker 1: you may have the other half to have recourse to
19:15
Speaker 1: for your supply. This was so wholesome advice and looked
19:21
Speaker 1: so friendly that I could not but be convinced it
19:24
Speaker 1: was the best course I could take. So I accordingly
19:27
Speaker 1: prepared letters to the gentlewoman with whom I had left
19:31
Speaker 1: my money, and a procuration to the Portuguese captain. As
19:34
Speaker 1: he desired. I wrote the English captain's widow, a full
19:39
Speaker 1: account of all my adventures, my slavery escape, and now
19:43
Speaker 1: I had met with the Portuguese captain at sea, and
19:47
Speaker 1: the humanity of his behavior, and what condition I was
19:50
Speaker 1: now in, with all other necessary directions for my supply.
19:55
Speaker 1: And when this honest captain came to Lisbon, he found
19:58
Speaker 1: means by some English merchants there to send over not
20:03
Speaker 1: the order only, but a full account of my story
20:06
Speaker 1: to a merchant in London, who represented it effectually to her.
20:11
Speaker 1: Whereupon she not only delivered the money, but out of
20:14
Speaker 1: her own pocket, sent the Portugal captain a very handsome
20:18
Speaker 1: present for his humanity and charity to me. The merchant
20:23
Speaker 1: in London, vesting this hundred pounds in English goods such
20:27
Speaker 1: as the captain had written for, sent them directly to
20:31
Speaker 1: him at Lisbon, and he brought them all safe to
20:34
Speaker 1: me to the brazils, among which, without my direction, for
20:39
Speaker 1: I was too young in my business to think of them,
20:41
Speaker 1: he had taken care to have all sorts of tools, ironwork,
20:45
Speaker 1: and utensils necessary for my plantation, and which were of
20:50
Speaker 1: great use to me. When this cargo arrived, I thought
20:54
Speaker 1: my fortune made, for I was surprised with the joy
20:59
Speaker 1: of it, and my stood steward. The captain had laid
21:03
Speaker 1: out the five pounds which my friend had sent him
21:06
Speaker 1: for present for himself to purchase and bring me over
21:09
Speaker 1: a servant under bond for six years service, and would
21:14
Speaker 1: not accept of any consideration except a little tobacco, which
21:17
Speaker 1: I would have him accept, being of my own produce.
21:21
Speaker 1: Neither was this all all my goods, being all English manufacturers,
21:26
Speaker 1: such as cloths, stuffs, bays, and things particularly valuable and
21:32
Speaker 1: desirable in the country. I found means to sell them
21:35
Speaker 1: to a very great advantage, so that I might say
21:38
Speaker 1: I had more than four times the value of my
21:41
Speaker 1: first cargo, and was now infinitely beyond my poor neighbor.
21:45
Speaker 1: I mean in the ambatsement of my plantation. For the
21:49
Speaker 1: first thing I did I bought me a Negro slave
21:54
Speaker 1: and an European servant also, I mean another one besides
21:58
Speaker 1: that which the captain brought me from Lisbon. But as abused,
22:03
Speaker 1: prosperity is sometimes made the very means of our greatest adversity.
22:07
Speaker 1: So it was with me. I went on the next
22:11
Speaker 1: year with great success in my plantation. I raised fifty
22:15
Speaker 1: great rolls of tobacco on my own ground, more than
22:18
Speaker 1: I had disposed of for necessaries among my neighbors. And
22:21
Speaker 1: these fifty roles, being each of above a hundredweight, were
22:25
Speaker 1: well cured and laid by against the return of the
22:29
Speaker 1: fleet from Lisbon. And, now increasing in business and wealth,
22:34
Speaker 1: my head began to be full of prospects and undertakings
22:37
Speaker 1: beyond my reach, such as are indeed often the ruin
22:41
Speaker 1: of the best heads in business. Had I continued in
22:45
Speaker 1: the station I was now in, I had room for
22:48
Speaker 1: all the happy things to have yet befallen me, for
22:51
Speaker 1: which my father so earnestly recommended a quiet, retired life,
22:56
Speaker 1: and of which he had so sensibly described the middle
22:59
Speaker 1: station of life to be full of. But other things
23:04
Speaker 1: attended me, and I was still to be the wilful
23:07
Speaker 1: agent of all my own miseries, and particularly to increase
23:13
Speaker 1: my fault and double the reflections upon myself, which in
23:17
Speaker 1: my future sorrows I should have leisure to make. All
23:21
Speaker 1: these miscarriages were procured by my apparent obstinates, adhering to
23:27
Speaker 1: my foolish inclination of wandering about and pursuing that inclination
23:33
Speaker 1: in contradiction to the clearest views of doing myself good
23:37
Speaker 1: in a fair and plain pursuit of those prospects and
23:42
Speaker 1: those measures of life which nature and Providence concurred to
23:46
Speaker 1: present me with, and to make my duty as I
23:52
Speaker 1: had once done thus in my breaking away from my parents.
23:57
Speaker 1: So I could not be content now, But I must
24:00
Speaker 1: go and leave the happy view I had of being
24:03
Speaker 1: a rich and thriving man in my new plantation, only
24:07
Speaker 1: to pursue a rash and immoderate desire of rising faster
24:12
Speaker 1: than the nature of the thing admitted. And thus I
24:15
Speaker 1: cast myself down again into the deepest gulf of human
24:19
Speaker 1: misery that ever man fell into, or perhaps could be
24:24
Speaker 1: consistent with life and a state of health in the
24:28
Speaker 1: world to come. Then, by the just degrees to the
24:32
Speaker 1: particulars of this part of my story, you may suppose that,
24:38
Speaker 1: having now lived almost four years in the Brazils, and
24:41
Speaker 1: beginning to thrive and prosper very well. Upon my plantation.
24:45
Speaker 1: I had not only learned the language, but had contracted
24:48
Speaker 1: acquaintance and friendship among my fellow planters, well as among
24:52
Speaker 1: the merchants of Saint Salvador, which was our port, and
24:56
Speaker 1: that in my discourses among them, I had frequently given
25:00
Speaker 1: them an account of my two voyages to the coast
25:02
Speaker 1: of Guinea, the manner of trading with the Negroes there,
25:06
Speaker 1: and how easy it was to purchase upon the coast
25:09
Speaker 1: for trifles such as beads, toys, knives, scissors, hatchets, bits
25:14
Speaker 1: of glass and the like, not only gold dust, guinea grains,
25:20
Speaker 1: elephant teeth, et cetera, but negroes for the service of
25:25
Speaker 1: the Brazils in great numbers. They listened always very attentively
25:32
Speaker 1: to my discourses on these heads, but especially to that
25:35
Speaker 1: part which related to the buying of negroes, which was
25:39
Speaker 1: a trade at that time not only not far entered into,
25:43
Speaker 1: but as far as it was, had been carried on
25:46
Speaker 1: by ascientos or permission of the kings of Spain and Portugal,
25:52
Speaker 1: and engrossed in the public stock, so that few negroes
25:56
Speaker 1: were bought in these excessively. Dear. It happened being in
26:03
Speaker 1: company with some merchants and planters of my acquaintance, and
26:06
Speaker 1: talking of those things very earnestly. Three of them came
26:09
Speaker 1: to me next morning and told me they had been
26:12
Speaker 1: musing very much upon what I had discoursed with them
26:16
Speaker 1: of the last night, and they came to make a
26:19
Speaker 1: secret proposal to me, And after enjoining me to secrecy,
26:24
Speaker 1: they told me they had a mind to fit out
26:27
Speaker 1: a ship to go to Guinea, that they had all
26:31
Speaker 1: plantations as well as I, and were straightened for nothing
26:34
Speaker 1: so much as servants. That because it was a trade
26:39
Speaker 1: that could not be carried on, because they could not
26:41
Speaker 1: publicly sell the Negroes when they came home, so they
26:46
Speaker 1: desired to make but one voyage to bring the Negroes
26:50
Speaker 1: on shore privately and divide them among their own plantations.
26:55
Speaker 1: And in a word, the question was whether I would
26:59
Speaker 1: go their supercargo in the ship to manage the trading
27:04
Speaker 1: part upon the coast of Guinea. And they offered me
27:07
Speaker 1: that I should have my equal share of the Negroes
27:10
Speaker 1: without providing any part of the stock. This was a
27:16
Speaker 1: fair proposal, it must be confessed, had it been made
27:20
Speaker 1: to any one that had not had a settlement and
27:22
Speaker 1: a plantation of his own to look after, which was
27:25
Speaker 1: in a fair way of coming to be very considerable,
27:28
Speaker 1: and with a good stock upon it. But for me
27:32
Speaker 1: that was thus entered and established, and had nothing to
27:34
Speaker 1: do but to go on as I had begun for
27:37
Speaker 1: three or four more years, and to have sent for
27:39
Speaker 1: the other hundred pounds from England, And who in that time,
27:44
Speaker 1: and with that little addition could scarce have failed of
27:48
Speaker 1: being worth three or four thousand pounds sterling, And that
27:52
Speaker 1: increasing too for me to think of such a voyage
27:56
Speaker 1: was the most preposterous thing that ever man in such
27:59
Speaker 1: circumstances could be guilty of. But I, that was born
28:05
Speaker 1: to be my own destroyer, could no more resist the
28:09
Speaker 1: offer than I could restrain my first rambling designs from
28:12
Speaker 1: my father's good counsel was lost upon me. In a word,
28:17
Speaker 1: I told them I would go with all my heart
28:20
Speaker 1: if they would undertake to look after my plantation in
28:23
Speaker 1: my absence, and would dispose of it such as I
28:26
Speaker 1: should direct. If I miscarried this, they all engaged to do,
28:30
Speaker 1: and entered into writings or covenants to do so, and
28:34
Speaker 1: I made a formal will disposing of my plantation and
28:37
Speaker 1: effects in case of my death, making the captain of
28:40
Speaker 1: the ship that had saved my life as before my
28:43
Speaker 1: universal heir, but obliging him to dispose of my effects
28:48
Speaker 1: as I had directed to my will, one half of
28:51
Speaker 1: the produce being to himself, and the other to be
28:54
Speaker 1: shipped to England. In short, I took all possible caution
28:59
Speaker 1: to preserve my affects and to keep up my plantation.
29:03
Speaker 1: Had I used half as much prudence to have looked
29:06
Speaker 1: into my own interest and have made a judgment of
29:09
Speaker 1: what I ought to have done and not to have done,
29:13
Speaker 1: I had certainly never gone away from so prosperous an undertaking,
29:19
Speaker 1: leaving all the probable views of a thriving circumstance, and
29:23
Speaker 1: gone upon a voyage to sea, attended with all its
29:26
Speaker 1: common hazards, to say nothing of the reasons I had
29:30
Speaker 1: to expect particular misfortunes to myself. But I was hurried
29:37
Speaker 1: on and obeyed blindly the dictates of my fancy rather
29:41
Speaker 1: than my reason. And accordingly, the ship being fitted out
29:45
Speaker 1: and the cargo furnished, and all things done as by
29:48
Speaker 1: agreement by my partners in the voyage. I went on
29:53
Speaker 1: board in an evil hour, the first September sixteen fifty nine,
30:00
Speaker 1: being the same day eight years that I went from
30:03
Speaker 1: my father and mother at Hull, in order to act
30:07
Speaker 1: the rebel to their authority and the fool to my
30:10
Speaker 1: own interests. Our ship was about one hundred and twenty
30:16
Speaker 1: tons burden, carried six guns and fourteen men. Besides the master,
30:22
Speaker 1: his boy and myself. We had on board no large
30:26
Speaker 1: cargo of goods, except to such toys as were fit
30:29
Speaker 1: for trade with the Negroes, such as beads, bits of glass, shells,
30:33
Speaker 1: and other trifles, especially little looking glasses, knives, scissors, hatchets,
30:38
Speaker 1: and the like. The same day I went on board,
30:42
Speaker 1: we set sail, standing away to the northward upon our
30:46
Speaker 1: own coast, with design to stretch over for the African coast.
30:51
Speaker 1: When we came about ten or twelve degrees of northern latitude,
30:55
Speaker 1: which it seems was the manner of course in those days,
30:59
Speaker 1: we had very good weather, only excessively hot all the
31:03
Speaker 1: way upon our own coast, till we came to the
31:06
Speaker 1: height of Cape San Augustino. From wentce keeping further off
31:13
Speaker 1: at sea, we lost sight of land, and steered as
31:17
Speaker 1: if we were bound for the Isle Fernando de Noronha,
31:22
Speaker 1: holding our course northeast by north and leaving those isles
31:26
Speaker 1: on the east. In this course we passed the line
31:31
Speaker 1: in about twelve days time, and were, by our last
31:35
Speaker 1: observation in seven degrees twenty two minutes northern latitude, when
31:41
Speaker 1: a violin tornado or hurricane took us quite out of
31:44
Speaker 1: our knowledge. It began from the southeast, came about to
31:49
Speaker 1: the northwest, and then settled in the northeast. From whence
31:53
Speaker 1: it blew in such a terrible manner that for twelve
31:56
Speaker 1: days together we could do nothing but drive and scudding
32:01
Speaker 1: away before it let it carry us, whether fate and
32:04
Speaker 1: the fury of the winds directed and during these twelve days,
32:08
Speaker 1: I need not say that I expected every day to
32:11
Speaker 1: be swallowed up, nor indeed did any in the ship
32:14
Speaker 1: expect to save their lives in this distress we had.
32:19
Speaker 1: Besides the terror of the storm, one of our men
32:23
Speaker 1: die of the calender, and one man and the boy
32:27
Speaker 1: washed overboard. About the twelfth day, the weather abating a little,
32:33
Speaker 1: the master made an observation as well as he could,
32:35
Speaker 1: and found that he was in about eleven degrees north latitude,
32:40
Speaker 1: but that he was twenty two degrees of longitude difference
32:44
Speaker 1: west from Cape Saint Augustino, so that he found he
32:50
Speaker 1: was upon the coast of Guiana, or the north part
32:53
Speaker 1: of Brazil, beyond the River Amazon, toward that of the
32:58
Speaker 1: River Orinoco, called the Great River, and began to consult
33:03
Speaker 1: with me what course he should take, for the ship
33:05
Speaker 1: was leaky and very much disabled, and he was going
33:09
Speaker 1: directly back to the coast of Brazil. I was positively
33:14
Speaker 1: against that, and looking over the charts of the sea
33:17
Speaker 1: coast of America with him, we concluded there was no
33:20
Speaker 1: inhabited country for us to have recourse to till we
33:23
Speaker 1: came within the circle of the Caribbee Islands, and therefore
33:28
Speaker 1: resolved to stand away for Barbados, which, by keeping off
33:32
Speaker 1: at sea to avoid the draft of the Bay or
33:35
Speaker 1: Gulf of Mexico, we might easily perform, as we hoped
33:39
Speaker 1: in about fifteen days sail, whereas we could not possibly
33:44
Speaker 1: make our voyage to the coast of Africa without some
33:46
Speaker 1: assistance both to our ship and to ourselves. With this design,
33:52
Speaker 1: we changed our course and steered away northwest by west
33:57
Speaker 1: in order to reach some of our English islands, where
34:00
Speaker 1: I hoped for relief, But our voyage was otherwise determined.
34:05
Speaker 1: For being in the latitude of twelve degrees eighteen minutes,
34:09
Speaker 1: a second storm came upon us, which carried us away
34:13
Speaker 1: with the same impetuosity westward, and drove us so out
34:17
Speaker 1: of the way of all human commerce, that had all
34:20
Speaker 1: our lives been saved as to the sea, we were
34:23
Speaker 1: rather in danger of being devoured by savages than ever
34:27
Speaker 1: returning to our own country. In this distress, the wind
34:32
Speaker 1: still blowing very hard, one of our men early in
34:36
Speaker 1: the morning cried out land, and we had no sooner
34:40
Speaker 1: run out of the cabin to look out and in
34:43
Speaker 1: hopes of seeing whereabouts in the world we were. Than
34:47
Speaker 1: the ship struck upon a sand and in a moment,
34:50
Speaker 1: her motion being so stopped, the sea broke over her
34:54
Speaker 1: in such a manner that we expected we should all
34:58
Speaker 1: have perished immediately, And we were immediately driven to our
35:02
Speaker 1: close quarters to shelter us from the very foam and
35:05
Speaker 1: spray of the sea. It is not easy for any
35:09
Speaker 1: one who has not been in the like condition to
35:12
Speaker 1: describe or conceive the consternation of men in such circumstances.
35:17
Speaker 1: We knew nothing where we were, or upon what land
35:20
Speaker 1: it was we were driven, whether an island or the main,
35:25
Speaker 1: whether inhabited or not inhabited. As the rage of the
35:29
Speaker 1: wind was still great, though rather less than at first,
35:32
Speaker 1: we could not so much as hope to have the
35:34
Speaker 1: ship hold many minutes without breaking into pieces, unless the winds,
35:39
Speaker 1: by a kind of miracle, should turn immediately about. In
35:43
Speaker 1: a word, we sat looking upon one another and expecting
35:48
Speaker 1: death every moment, and every man accordingly preparing for another world,
35:54
Speaker 1: For there was little or nothing more for us to
35:57
Speaker 1: do in this That which was our our present comfort,
36:01
Speaker 1: and all the comfort we had was that, contrary to
36:04
Speaker 1: our expectation, the ship did not break yet, and that
36:09
Speaker 1: the Master said the wind began to abate now, though
36:15
Speaker 1: we thought that the wind did a little debate. Yet
36:18
Speaker 1: the ship having thus struck upon the sand and striking
36:22
Speaker 1: too fast and sticking for us to expect her getting off,
36:28
Speaker 1: We were in a dreadful condition, indeed, and had nothing
36:31
Speaker 1: to do but to think of saving our lives as
36:33
Speaker 1: well as we could. We had a boat at our
36:37
Speaker 1: stern just before the storm, but she was first staved
36:40
Speaker 1: by dashing against the ship's rudder, and in the second
36:43
Speaker 1: place she broke away and either sunk or was driven
36:48
Speaker 1: off to sea. So there was no hope from her.
36:51
Speaker 1: We had another boat on board, but how to get
36:53
Speaker 1: her off into the sea was a doubtful thing. However,
36:58
Speaker 1: there was no time to debate, for we fancied that
37:01
Speaker 1: the ship would break in pieces every minute, and some
37:04
Speaker 1: told us she was actually broken already. In this distress,
37:09
Speaker 1: the mate of our vessel laid hold of the boat,
37:12
Speaker 1: and with the help of the rest of the men,
37:14
Speaker 1: got her slung over the ship's side. In getting all
37:17
Speaker 1: in to her, let go and committed ourselves, being eleven
37:20
Speaker 1: in number, to God's mercy and the wild sea. And
37:25
Speaker 1: though the storm was abated considerably, yet the sea ran
37:29
Speaker 1: dreadfully high upon the shore, and might be well called
37:33
Speaker 1: denviled z, as the Dutch called the sea in a storm.
37:39
Speaker 1: And now our case was very dismal, indeed, for we
37:42
Speaker 1: all saw plainly that the sea went so high that
37:45
Speaker 1: the boat could not live, and that we should be
37:48
Speaker 1: inevitably drowned. As to making sail, we had none, nor
37:53
Speaker 1: if we had, could we have done anything with it.
37:56
Speaker 1: So we worked at the oar towards the land, though
38:00
Speaker 1: with heavy hearts like men going to execution, For we
38:03
Speaker 1: all knew that when the boat came near the shore,
38:06
Speaker 1: she would be dashed in a thousand pieces by the
38:08
Speaker 1: breach of the sea. However, we committed our souls to
38:13
Speaker 1: God in the most earnest manner, and the wind driving
38:17
Speaker 1: us towards the shore, we hastened our destruction with our
38:20
Speaker 1: own hands, pulling as well as we could towards land.
38:27
Speaker 1: What the shore was, whether rock or sand, whether steep
38:30
Speaker 1: or shoal, we knew not. The only hope that could
38:35
Speaker 1: rationally give us at least some shadow of expectation was
38:40
Speaker 1: if we might find some bay or gulf, or the
38:43
Speaker 1: mouth of some river, where by great chance we might
38:47
Speaker 1: have run our boat in or got under the lee
38:50
Speaker 1: of the land, and perhaps made smooth water. But there
38:55
Speaker 1: was nothing like this appeared. But as we may nearer
38:58
Speaker 1: and nearer the shore, the land looked more frightful than
39:01
Speaker 1: the sea. After we had rowed, or rather driven about
39:06
Speaker 1: a league and a half, as we reckoned it, a
39:09
Speaker 1: raging wave mountainlike came rolling astern of us, and plainly
39:14
Speaker 1: bade us expect the coupdi gras it took us with
39:19
Speaker 1: such a fury that it overset the boat at once,
39:22
Speaker 1: and separating us as well from the boat as from
39:25
Speaker 1: one another, gave us no time to say, Oh God,
39:29
Speaker 1: for we were all swallowed up in a moment. Nothing
39:34
Speaker 1: can describe the confusion of thought which I felt when
39:37
Speaker 1: I sank into the water, For though I swam very well,
39:41
Speaker 1: yet I could not deliver myself from the waves so
39:43
Speaker 1: as to draw a breath till that wave, having driven me,
39:47
Speaker 1: or rather carried me a vast way on towards the shore,
39:50
Speaker 1: and having spent itself, went back and left me upon
39:54
Speaker 1: the land, almost dry but half dead. With the water
39:57
Speaker 1: I took in, I had so so much presence of
40:00
Speaker 1: mind as well as breath left that seen myself nearer
40:04
Speaker 1: the mainland than I expected, I got upon my feet
40:07
Speaker 1: and endeavored to make on towards the land as fast
40:09
Speaker 1: as I could before another wave should return and take
40:12
Speaker 1: me up again. But I soon found it was impossible
40:16
Speaker 1: to avoid it, for I saw the sea come after
40:18
Speaker 1: me as high as a great hill, and as furious
40:22
Speaker 1: as an enemy, which I had no means or strength
40:25
Speaker 1: to contend with. My business was to hold my breath
40:29
Speaker 1: and raise myself upon the water if I could, and
40:32
Speaker 1: so by swimming to preserve my breathing and pilot myself
40:36
Speaker 1: towards the shore if possible, my greatest concern now being
40:41
Speaker 1: that the sea, as it would carry me a great
40:43
Speaker 1: way towards the shore when it came on, might not
40:47
Speaker 1: carry me back again with it when it gave back
40:50
Speaker 1: towards the sea. The wave that came upon me again
40:54
Speaker 1: buried me at once twenty or thirty feet deep in
40:57
Speaker 1: its own body, and I could feel myself cared, carried
41:00
Speaker 1: with a mighty force and swiftness towards the shore a
41:03
Speaker 1: very great way. But I held my breath and assisted
41:07
Speaker 1: myself to swim still forward with all my might. I
41:12
Speaker 1: was ready to burst with holding my breath, when as
41:16
Speaker 1: I felt myself rising up, so to my immediate relief,
41:20
Speaker 1: I found my head and hands shoot out of the
41:23
Speaker 1: surface of the water. And though it was not two
41:25
Speaker 1: seconds of time that I could keep myself so, yet
41:28
Speaker 1: it relieved me greatly, gave me breath and new courage.
41:32
Speaker 1: I was covered again with water a good while, but
41:35
Speaker 1: not so long, but I held it out, and, finding
41:38
Speaker 1: the water had spent itself and began to return, I
41:41
Speaker 1: struck forward against the return of the waves, and felt
41:45
Speaker 1: ground again with my feet. I stood still a few
41:49
Speaker 1: moments to recover breath till the waters went from me,
41:53
Speaker 1: and then took to my heels and ran with what
41:55
Speaker 1: strength I had further towards the shore. But neither would
41:59
Speaker 1: this deliver me from the fury of the sea, which
42:02
Speaker 1: came pouring in after me. And twice more I was
42:05
Speaker 1: lifted up by the waves and carried forward as before,
42:10
Speaker 1: the shore being very flat. The last time of these
42:16
Speaker 1: two had well nigh been fatal to me, for the sea,
42:19
Speaker 1: having hurried me along as before, landed me, or rather
42:22
Speaker 1: dashed me against a piece of rock, and that was
42:25
Speaker 1: such force that it left me senseless and indeed helpless
42:29
Speaker 1: as to my own deliverance. For the blow taking my
42:33
Speaker 1: side and breast beat the breath as it were quite
42:36
Speaker 1: out of my body, and had it returned again immediately,
42:40
Speaker 1: I must have been strangled in the water. But I
42:43
Speaker 1: recovered a little before the return of the waves, and
42:46
Speaker 1: seeing I should be covered again with the water, I
42:48
Speaker 1: resolved to hold fast by a piece of the rock,
42:51
Speaker 1: and so to hold my breath if possible, till the
42:54
Speaker 1: wave went back. Now as the waves were not so
42:59
Speaker 1: high as I first. Being nearer land, I held my
43:03
Speaker 1: hold till the wave abated, and then fetched another run,
43:06
Speaker 1: which brought me so near the shore that the next wave,
43:10
Speaker 1: though it went over me, yet did not so swallow
43:13
Speaker 1: me up as to carry me away. And the next
43:16
Speaker 1: run I took I got to the mainland, where, to
43:18
Speaker 1: my great comfort, I clambered up the cliffs of the
43:21
Speaker 1: shore and sat me down upon the grass, free from danger.
43:25
Speaker 1: And I was now landed and safe on shore, and
43:29
Speaker 1: began to look up and thank God that my life
43:32
Speaker 1: was saved in a case wherein there was some minutes
43:37
Speaker 1: before scarce any room to hope. I believe it is
43:41
Speaker 1: impossible to express to the life what the ecstasies and
43:46
Speaker 1: transports of the soul are when it is so saved,
43:50
Speaker 1: as might say, out of the very grave. I do
43:54
Speaker 1: not wonder now at the custom when a malefactor who
43:58
Speaker 1: has the halter around his is tied up and just
44:01
Speaker 1: going to be turned off, and has a reprieve brought
44:05
Speaker 1: to him, I say, I do not wonder that they
44:09
Speaker 1: bring a surgeon with it to let him blood. That
44:13
Speaker 1: very moment they tell him of it, that the surprise
44:16
Speaker 1: may not drive the animal spirits from the heart and
44:19
Speaker 1: overwhelm him for sudden joys like griefs confound. At first,
44:28
Speaker 1: I walked about on the shore, lifting up my hands
44:30
Speaker 1: and my whole being, as I may say, wrapped up
44:34
Speaker 1: in a contemplation of my deliverance, making a thousand gestures
44:38
Speaker 1: and motions which I cannot describe, reflecting upon all my
44:42
Speaker 1: comrades that were drowned, and that there should be not
44:46
Speaker 1: one soul saved but myself. For as for them, I
44:52
Speaker 1: never saw them afterwards, or any sign of them, except
44:57
Speaker 1: three of their hats, one cap, and two shoes that
45:02
Speaker 1: were not fellows. I cast my eye to the stranded vessel,
45:08
Speaker 1: when the breach and froth of the sea being so
45:12
Speaker 1: big I could hardly see it it lay so far off,
45:17
Speaker 1: and considered, Lord, how was it possible I could get
45:21
Speaker 1: on shore. After I had solaced my mind with the
45:26
Speaker 1: comfortable part of my condition, I began to look around
45:29
Speaker 1: me to see what kind of place I was in
45:32
Speaker 1: and what was next to be done. And I soon
45:35
Speaker 1: found my comforts a bait, and that, in a word,
45:39
Speaker 1: I had a dreadful deliverance, for I was wet, had
45:43
Speaker 1: no clothes, to shift me, nor anything either to eat
45:46
Speaker 1: or drink to comfort me. Neither did I see any
45:50
Speaker 1: prospect before me but that of perishing with hunger or
45:53
Speaker 1: being devoured by wild beasts. And that which was particularly
45:58
Speaker 1: afflicting to me was that I had no weapon, either
46:02
Speaker 1: to hunt and kill any creature for my sustenance, or
46:06
Speaker 1: to defend myself against any other creature that might desire
46:09
Speaker 1: to kill me for theirs. In a word, I had
46:13
Speaker 1: nothing about me but a knife, a tobacco pipe, and
46:18
Speaker 1: a little tobacco in a box. This was all my provisions.
46:22
Speaker 1: And this threw me into such terrible agonies of mine
46:26
Speaker 1: that for a while I ran about like a madman.
46:31
Speaker 1: Night coming upon me, I began with a heavy heart
46:33
Speaker 1: to consider what would be my lot if there were
46:36
Speaker 1: any ravenous beasts in that country, as at night they
46:40
Speaker 1: always come abroad for their prey. All the remedy that
46:46
Speaker 1: offered to my thoughts at that time was to get
46:49
Speaker 1: up into a thick bushy tree, like a fir but thorny,
46:53
Speaker 1: which grew near me, and where I resolved to sit
46:57
Speaker 1: all night and consider the next day death I should die,
47:02
Speaker 1: for as yet I saw no prospect of life I
47:06
Speaker 1: walked about a furlong from the shore to see if
47:09
Speaker 1: I could find any fresh water to drink, which I
47:12
Speaker 1: did to my great joy, And having drank and put
47:16
Speaker 1: a little tobacco into my mouth to prevent hunger, I
47:19
Speaker 1: went to the tree, and, getting up into it, endeavored
47:23
Speaker 1: to place myself so that if I should sleep, I
47:26
Speaker 1: might not fall. And having cut me a short stick
47:31
Speaker 1: like a trencheon for my defense, I took up my lodging, and,
47:36
Speaker 1: having been excessively fatigued, I fell fast asleep, and slept
47:41
Speaker 1: as comfortably as I believe few could have done in
47:45
Speaker 1: my condition, and found myself more refreshed with it than
47:50
Speaker 1: I think I ever was on such an occasion. End
