- 0:00Job chapter 2 first, let's pray dear Lord, please be with us as
- 0:05we read through this chapter and let the Holy Spirit give us
- 0:08wisdom and insight and discernment.
- 0:12We ask this in Jesus name Amen. So on another day chapter 2 on
- 0:18another day. So the first chapter was about
- 0:22about a specific day when Satan was talking to God about Job,
- 0:28and God allowed Satan to have access to Job's belongings, his
- 0:35children, and his things that he owned, and Satan kind of
- 0:40destroyed them. And so now another day the
- 0:44angels came back to present themselves before the Lord, and
- 0:48Satan came with them to present himself before him.
- 0:52And the Lord said to Satan, Where have you come from?
- 0:55Satan answered the Lord, From roaming throughout the earth,
- 0:59going back and forth on it. Then the Lord said to Satan,
- 1:03Have you considered my servant Job?
- 1:05There is no one on earth like him.
- 1:07He is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns
- 1:11evil, and he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me
- 1:17against him to ruin him without any reason.
- 1:20So I'm going to well, I'll just keep reading.
- 1:23Skin for skin, Satan replied. A man will give all he has for
- 1:27his own life, but now stretch out your hand and strike his
- 1:31flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.
- 1:36The Lord said to Satan, Very well then, if he is in your
- 1:39hand, very well then he is in your hands, but you must spare
- 1:47his life. So Satan went out from the
- 1:50presence of the Lord, and afflicted Job with painful sores
- 1:54from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.
- 1:58Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with
- 2:02his with it. As he sat among the ashes.
- 2:06His wife said to him, Are you still maintaining your
- 2:10integrity? Curse dot God and die, he
- 2:15replied. You are talking like a foolish
- 2:17woman. Shall we accept good from God
- 2:20and not trouble? In all this?
- 2:22Job did not sin in what he said. When Job's three friends,
- 2:28Elephas the Timonite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the
- 2:35Nemethite, heard about all the troubles that had come upon him,
- 2:39they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to
- 2:44go and sympathize with him and comfort him.
- 2:49When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly
- 2:52recognize him. They began to weep aloud and
- 2:56tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads.
- 3:00Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven
- 3:05nights. No one said a word to him
- 3:09because they saw how great his suffering was.
- 3:13So that's the end of chapter 2. There's a lot in here.
- 3:17I'm going to just go through the things that stood out to me as I
- 3:20read this and then I'll go through the study Bible
- 3:23questions. Lastly, so we see that Satan was
- 3:29in, you know, this is the second time now that Satan's back in
- 3:34front of God with Job. But we see that God is the one
- 3:39who is saying to Satan, you know, he still maintains
- 3:43integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without
- 3:47any reason. So again, this shows about what
- 3:51Satan does. He's the accuser.
- 3:53He's always looking for fault. So when we have things in our
- 3:57minds or thoughts that accuse us that, you know, sometimes it's
- 4:03the holy, not the let's see, the Holy Spirit will convict us.
- 4:09Satan will accuse us. The Holy Spirit.
- 4:13I, I think like guilt is as much as we don't like it, it's
- 4:17probably a good thing. Because if we feel guilt, that
- 4:21means we know we should have done something, but we didn't do
- 4:25it or we know we should not have done something and we did it.
- 4:29And I believe that is probably from the Holy Spirit.
- 4:32And that is a prompting that wants us to reconcile with God.
- 4:37Now the accuser is just shaming and just badgering somebody and
- 4:43not giving any kind of restoration.
- 4:46Like with guilt, there is there is this kind of like you just
- 4:50feel uncomfortable. And I know we hate it when it
- 4:53happens to us, but I think it's a good thing from God if we
- 4:56respond to it. If we feel guilty about
- 4:58something we did, that means we know we did something wrong.
- 5:03And that's God reminding us that we need to reconcile with him.
- 5:07But if we get this accusation of all these like negative things
- 5:12just popping in our head about ourselves, that's from the enemy
- 5:16because God it, you know, throughout the Bible, everything
- 5:20about, you know, I guess believer friends and so forth
- 5:25are supposed to build people up to restore people in their
- 5:30relationship with God, not destroy them.
- 5:36And Satan seeks to destroy them. So and there's a there's a fine
- 5:41line to that. And there's also perception that
- 5:43affects how people react when the objective is restoration
- 5:51with God, because when somebody feels guilty, they're going to
- 5:54lash out. And and that's just human nature
- 5:59because we don't ever we don't like it.
- 6:02We don't like guilt. We don't want to be told we're
- 6:04wrong when we especially when we know we're wrong and then we get
- 6:07confirmation from somebody else that we're wrong.
- 6:09We don't like that. So we'll lash out at another
- 6:11person because of that. And that's just human nature.
- 6:14That's the fleshly nature coming out.
- 6:17If it was a godly, if we were responding by the Holy Spirit
- 6:21and somebody godly said something to us, you know, that
- 6:24was re trying to restore us to Christ, then we our response
- 6:29would be humility. It would be, yes, we know we did
- 6:34something wrong and yes, you are reminding me.
- 6:38And maybe the Holy Spirit in, you know, inspired you to say
- 6:43something to me. And I don't like it because I
- 6:46don't like being at odds with God.
- 6:50And I want to restore that relationship because I love God.
- 6:53And it it hurts to hear somebody else or to have somebody else
- 6:56say something that might hit hard at home.
- 6:59That's just like what the Bible does when we read some of it,
- 7:02there are things in it that will hit us and just make us think,
- 7:06oh, gosh, I do that or that sounds like me.
- 7:09And it's something negative in the Bible.
- 7:11And God's not trying to do that to shame us.
- 7:14He's trying to do that to wake us up.
- 7:17Look at what's happening to you. Get rid of that.
- 7:20Get rid of that sin. In God's Kingdom, there will be
- 7:23no sin. So if we're hanging on to sin
- 7:26right now, we're hanging on to something that's not going to go
- 7:28with us in eternity. So anyway, going back to chapter
- 7:332, God is the one who says something.
- 7:36And this is my theory. This is like, I don't know even
- 7:40know if I should say this, but I'm just going to mention
- 7:45something that I mentioned in chapter 1.
- 7:47Take it or leave it. I don't know if this is right,
- 7:49but I'm just going to say this is like a theory like I thought
- 7:54before, maybe God was actually trying to wake Satan up and say,
- 8:00look at Job, he's a good guy. He's like, he's responding
- 8:04positively to me. Even though you did all these
- 8:08things, like what about you, Satan?
- 8:11Maybe that's what God was doing with us.
- 8:13I don't know, but that's just the way I'm seeing this.
- 8:19And so he's allowing it and, and again, God knows our thoughts.
- 8:24So God probably knows how far, you know, like there how far he
- 8:28can kind of test Job and still keep it good with him, which is
- 8:34interesting because I've, I've heard before, and I don't know
- 8:36where that is in Scripture, but I've heard that, you know, that
- 8:41God only tests us to the limit that we can handle.
- 8:44And God always provides a way out.
- 8:46That's The thing is God does provide a way out whenever we
- 8:50get tested. So anyway, Job is still
- 8:55maintaining his integrity even though Satan's accusing him.
- 9:00And so then Satan, you know, says basically, let's step it up
- 9:05a notch. Let's do something even more.
- 9:07Let's go at him directly. Maybe it didn't affect him as
- 9:11much with his kids or his belongings, but now let's go
- 9:15after him or, you know, can I go after him?
- 9:19That's what Satan's asking God and he says, and Satan is so
- 9:24sure of himself, like as soon as something starts happening to
- 9:27Job, he's going to curse God. He's going to go after you.
- 9:30He's not going to like you anymore.
- 9:32That's like Satan just saying, I know this and God's like, OK,
- 9:36sure. Well, go ahead.
- 9:38And then look at this. God does not do this to Job, but
- 9:42he says very well then he is in your hands.
- 9:47So God has the ultimate authority.
- 9:50He's allowing Satan to do these harmful things to Job, who is
- 9:56righteous and but he says he limits on it.
- 9:59He said, but you must spare his life because we know that the
- 10:03enemy seeks to steal like he stole his belongings, some of
- 10:07his camels and things and he sees to kill like ultimately
- 10:12that's what Satan wants to do. He was to kill Job, but God
- 10:15saying, no, you can't have his life and he wants to destroy.
- 10:19Well, he did destroy all of Job's things.
- 10:23So God says, OK, you can go and do this.
- 10:27So Satan left God's presence and then he afflicted.
- 10:30So Satan afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of
- 10:34his feet to the crown of his head, his whole entire body.
- 10:38So we have to think about like illnesses.
- 10:40This is scriptural proof that the enemy of God will inflict
- 10:46illnesses on people. And this is also proof here that
- 10:50God didn't do this. He allowed it.
- 10:53He allowed it. There was a purpose behind it.
- 10:55And we don't always know God's purpose.
- 10:58So here I think, I mean, this is just my thoughts.
- 11:04It's not biblically stated, but I kind of think that God's, you
- 11:12know, showing Satan this, like this is actually a test for
- 11:16Satan and he doesn't even know this.
- 11:17And this will, you know, it's what you reap, you will sow.
- 11:20And that's probably why Satan gets thrown into this burning
- 11:24lake of sulfur because of all these things that Satan has done
- 11:28to all these people to try to destroy them.
- 11:31It's like what you sow, you will reap.
- 11:34I mean, that's in the Bible and we have to think about that like
- 11:37what we do in life, we are going to get in return.
- 11:41That's a biblical principle and and we need to really reflect on
- 11:47that like that. Are we doing godly things to
- 11:50others or are we doing things that we wouldn't want done to
- 11:54us? I mean, just like, you know,
- 11:56the, the quote, the golden rule that people talk about, like
- 12:00treat others the way you want to be treated.
- 12:02Well, there's a biblical principle behind it because what
- 12:05you sow, you will reap. So Job is in pain and he's got
- 12:10broken pottery that's scraping himself.
- 12:12I don't know, he's trying to get it off.
- 12:14It's painful. I don't know if they're like
- 12:16itching kind of sores or something.
- 12:18But God is, is is certainly testing Joe, but he also knows
- 12:23kind of what Joe will do. Now Job's wife said to him, are
- 12:27you still maintaining his integrity?
- 12:30Curse God and die. Why would she say that?
- 12:33Why would she want her husband to die?
- 12:35Why would she want her husband to curse God?
- 12:39That just it reminds me of other parts in the Bible where I think
- 12:43Satan influenced his wife. And you know, Satan will come
- 12:48after the closest people to you, just like he even did with
- 12:52Jesus, with Peter, with Judas. Satan leapt into Judas and
- 12:59caused Judas to betray Jesus. And then afterwards he, I
- 13:06probably accused Judas. So Judas, eventually, it's
- 13:11thought that he actually took his life, his own life as a
- 13:16result of the guilt and remorse. Now The thing is, I, I, I want
- 13:20to hope that maybe Judas came to repentance because he gave the
- 13:25money back to the temple. And so maybe God saw that and
- 13:29maybe Judas is going to be restored in God's Kingdom.
- 13:32See, God can do whatever he wants to do even though he
- 13:35betrayed Jesus. I don't know if that's the case.
- 13:42We don't know what God's final decision was, but we can have
- 13:46hope for people that if they come to repentance, then they
- 13:50can be restored in Christ. And anyway, here we're, you
- 13:56know, this is talking about, I think Satan is influencing Job's
- 13:59wife, the person closest to him, and she's telling him, curse God
- 14:04and die. That's horrible advice and he
- 14:07saw it too. He had strong faith.
- 14:10He knows God and he had discernment.
- 14:13So he did not listen to his wife, unlike Adam who listened
- 14:17to Eve. Job replied.
- 14:19You are talking like a foolish woman.
- 14:22Shall we accept good from God and not trouble?
- 14:26So in all this, Job did not sin in what he said like he, his,
- 14:31his love of God wasn't going to falter.
- 14:36Then Job's three friends come and these are really interesting
- 14:39guys. And I, you know, this is, I'm
- 14:42reading this with a different perspective this time as opposed
- 14:46to 2019 when I first read this book, but I'm seeing a lot more
- 14:51detail in it, which is what happens in Scripture.
- 14:54The more you're in it, the more detail things you see.
- 14:57So first you have for Joba's perspective, he has his wife
- 15:01who's giving him this really bad information, like she should be
- 15:05supporting him, encouraging him and, you know, turning him to
- 15:10God or being positive, being uplifting, but she's not, she's
- 15:15just making it worse. Then we have OK, now we have 3
- 15:18friends coming along and three again, that number 3 is kind of
- 15:22important. We were let's see, I looked it
- 15:25up. That's kind of like harmony or
- 15:27completeness is 3. There's like the Trinity.
- 15:29That's a significant number. Again, if this is just a
- 15:33parable, it is telling us some truths, spiritual truths, but
- 15:38it's also, you know, there's so many symbolic things in it.
- 15:42If if it is just a parable just to show people a spiritual
- 15:48reality. And again he talks about 7 days
- 15:52and seven nights sitting with him.
- 15:54Sometimes I will not sometimes. But as I read this, I was
- 15:57wondering. So 7 is also completion.
- 16:00And it made me think about Jacob's trouble in the end times
- 16:04where there is a Daniel, there's a final week of years, seven
- 16:09years to where Israel or Jacob will have to go through trouble.
- 16:16And again, this is the whole, the whole point of this is
- 16:19basically discipline so that they can repent and turn to God
- 16:26and call on God. And again, this is kind of
- 16:30interesting that the friends sat with him for seven days and
- 16:35seven nights. And I wonder if it is symbolic
- 16:40and something that God was essentially showing that there's
- 16:43going to be time, there's going to be trouble.
- 16:46This trouble lasts for seven days and seven nights, and
- 16:51you're going to have your friends surrounding you.
- 16:52And they came. Now look at how they came.
- 16:55When they heard about him, they went to him and they decided by
- 16:59agreement. It says they met together by
- 17:03agreement. So they were all in agreement to
- 17:05go and sympathize with him and comfort him.
- 17:10So that's their intention. Now, I recall what happens later
- 17:13on in the book of Job. And what happens is they don't
- 17:17say comforting things. They start accusing him.
- 17:20So by reading this right now and knowing what's happens in future
- 17:26chapters, Satan probably got to the friends too.
- 17:30So. And gosh, I experienced that
- 17:33too. It's like every single aspect of
- 17:36my life, it seemed like was going wrong.
- 17:40A lot of times in life, you'll have one aspect go wrong, but
- 17:43you have something at another aspect of your life that's going
- 17:46well. And so then you focus on what's
- 17:49going well and you stay away from the things that are going
- 17:52bad as much as you can. And, and so again, this is like
- 17:59when I, when I was praying to God, because I was, I was trying
- 18:03to do the things that I knew were in God's will.
- 18:07And, and then these things started happening to me and I
- 18:11was afraid to tell anybody because I thought nobody will
- 18:14want to come to God if they know that this happens.
- 18:16But now I tell people the truth. It's kind of like Jesus says
- 18:20like to, to, you know, like before you decide to follow, you
- 18:29know, you should look at the, at what it means to follow and that
- 18:33we have to pick up our own cross.
- 18:35Like it doesn't mean that our Rd. is going to be blissful and
- 18:39joyful and nothing happens. Like that's what I thought was
- 18:43going to happen. When I turned my life over, I
- 18:45saw that there was bad stuff in my life and I regretted it and I
- 18:50wanted to get rid of it and I wanted my life to be different
- 18:54and I wanted my life. It was kind of, it was selfish,
- 18:57I guess, because I wanted life to be better.
- 19:01And that's how I started seeking God, which isn't the right way,
- 19:04but a lot of people do come that way because they don't really
- 19:07know God. They know of him, but they don't
- 19:10truly know him. And you get to know God through
- 19:13the Bible and through prayers and, and supernaturally if God
- 19:17chooses to reveal himself to you in that way.
- 19:20So anyway, I, I didn't have any of that happening in my life and
- 19:24I hadn't read the Bible and things were going really wrong.
- 19:27But my intentions were good with God in, in restoring that
- 19:31relationship. And, and so this was, I was
- 19:36pleading with God. I was like, why, why, why is
- 19:39this happening? And I saw my book on my night
- 19:43stand and I thought, OK, I'm just going to open it up and see
- 19:46what is here. You know, like kind of praying.
- 19:49I don't even remember exactly what I said to God or, you know,
- 19:53I just know that the book was there, The Bible was there.
- 19:55And I decided to open it randomly and I opened it to the
- 19:59book of Job. And then I started reading and
- 20:03then it kind of, it woke me up. It was like, Oh my gosh, this is
- 20:08what is happening to me at that moment.
- 20:11And this was the very first book of the Bible that I ever read.
- 20:17So anyway, not to get into that, but I'm I'm saying, I guess what
- 20:21I'm trying to say is the stuff that's in here in job I
- 20:25experienced in my own life, not to the degree or the severity
- 20:28that job did, but to some degree something similar to that.
- 20:33And so that I mean, I believe this 100% and I encourage others
- 20:40to believe this. Don't think this is just a
- 20:42made-up story, a fairy tale or anything.
- 20:44This is in the Bible for a reason.
- 20:46It's in here so that we know what's happening in our life
- 20:49when it happens. And when you know you can, you
- 20:52can battle it spiritually with Christ, like with the Holy
- 20:58Spirit, you can overcome this. And that's what the good news
- 21:02is, is that God provides us a way to defeat this.
- 21:08As you see, God is actually in control of this.
- 21:11He could tell Satan enough. Stop it right now.
- 21:16But there is this testing and I, I kind of, I don't know because
- 21:20only God decides these things. But if we know that we are being
- 21:24tested by the enemy of God by something evil and we ask God to
- 21:30remove it or we ask God to show me, what is it in my life that I
- 21:34need to address because these things are happening to me.
- 21:39Like what do I need to get rid of in my life?
- 21:41Or what do I need to change? Or what are you upset with me
- 21:44about? Like what not maybe upset.
- 21:47What is it that I allowed in my life that needs to go?
- 21:52Like God wants sin out of our life.
- 21:54And that's essentially like what what needs to go?
- 21:57And God will reveal it if if we seek him, we will find him.
- 22:02It says that in Scripture. So his friends come and they're
- 22:06sad. They weep aloud.
- 22:08They tore the robes and sprinkled dust on their heads.
- 22:10That's a sign of grief. They're just seeing him.
- 22:12And they're probably looking at this, this very wealthy,
- 22:15successful man and just saying, Oh my goodness, look at what
- 22:19he's become. Everything that he had was taken
- 22:23away from him. Now, physically, he's a mess.
- 22:26And they were just probably shocked to see him this way.
- 22:30And they just sat with him. So they were somewhat being true
- 22:34friends, just sitting with him while he was there.
- 22:38They didn't even know what to say to him because they saw how
- 22:41great his suffering was. So that's the way this chapter
- 22:45ends. And that is I will go through
- 22:50the study, Bibles, questions and answers now and then wrap this
- 22:54one up. Why does Satan mingle with God's
- 22:57angels here? Angels literally mean the sons
- 23:01of God. Though hard to imagine, Satan
- 23:04himself was once a quote Son of God.
- 23:08Created originally to serve the Lord as a spiritual being.
- 23:13He came with the others to talk to God.
- 23:16On the other hand, some note that Satan's purpose in coming
- 23:19was to accuse. They suggest that the phrase
- 23:23with them means Satan came as an intruder.
- 23:28Well, the other thing that I want to mention is that there
- 23:30are fallen angels as well. So it doesn't say if they're
- 23:34like good angels or bad angels or there's maybe a mixture.
- 23:38But obviously if the angels are serving the Lord, they're going
- 23:42to be in front. They're going to be in front of
- 23:43the Lord, and if they're there to serve him, it could be good
- 23:46ones and bad ones and God created them.
- 23:49So there's probably more to that.
- 23:52How did Satan incite God? This is typical Old Testament
- 23:55language explaining supernatural things in human terms.
- 23:59However, this does not imply that God can be urged to do
- 24:02anything against his will. It was God, in fact, who pointed
- 24:06Job out to Satan, not the other way around.
- 24:10As it was, God used Satan's evil intentions as an opportunity for
- 24:15both God and Job to prove their faithfulness to each other.
- 24:20You know, like I said, maybe, maybe God was proving to Satan.
- 24:23Look, this guy had it so much worse than you and he is still
- 24:28faithful to me. And and then Satan, you know, he
- 24:34would have had the opportunity to reflect on himself, but he
- 24:37was full of pride and he would not do that as we see by example
- 24:42throughout Scripture that that was just not in him.
- 24:45He was, he was going to remain prideful and he, you know, not
- 24:48see his own flaws. But look at Job and Job wasn't
- 24:52doing anything wrong. He was just Satan was thinking,
- 24:55well, how can I get to him? How can I destroy him?
- 24:58And that's what it says Satan does.
- 24:59He seeks to steal, to kill, to destroy.
- 25:03And so when we see things in our life that are stealing or
- 25:08destroying or killing, that's the enemy of God.
- 25:11That is not God. So what kind of sores did Job
- 25:16have? We don't know Job's actual
- 25:17ailment, but some of his symptoms described throughout
- 25:20the book suggest a combination of physical problems,
- 25:23disfigurement, parasites, skin infections, hallucinations,
- 25:28emaciation, sharp pains, and fever.
- 25:32Job sores may have been boils, painful bacterial infections of
- 25:37the skin. Does God send trouble as well as
- 25:42good? In a sense, yes.
- 25:44In a different context, the Lord himself said I bring prosperity
- 25:49and create disaster. I, the Lord, do all these
- 25:53things. That's found in Isaiah 45 or 7.
- 25:56Some argue that God only permits or allows trouble.
- 26:01Others say that God is so completely in control that
- 26:04nothing can touch His people without first going through His
- 26:09hand. Because Job trusted in God, he
- 26:12concluded that trouble from God was better than comfort and ease
- 26:16without God. He was confident that God had
- 26:20his best interest at heart, even though he could not understand
- 26:25how that could be true in His present situation.
- 26:28This is really interesting. I actually underlined that in my
- 26:31study Bible. He was confident that God had
- 26:34his best interest at heart restoration, even though he
- 26:39could not understand how that could be true in his present
- 26:42situation. That is thinking the best of
- 26:45God. How often do we think the best
- 26:48of God? How often do we think the best
- 26:51of others? The others don't always deserve
- 26:53being thought of in the best light, but God certainly does.
- 26:57God is good and God does care for His children.
- 27:01He does discipline His children. Now here Job is not being
- 27:04disciplined by God for anything he did.
- 27:07He is being tested and there are many of God's followers who do
- 27:13get tested and it's there's maybe a lesson in it.
- 27:17There's a lesson for somebody. It's not just random.
- 27:21So personally, my opinion is that I think it's a lesson for
- 27:25Satan, but I don't know that for certain.
- 27:29Where did Job's friends come from?
- 27:32Only the homeland of Iliphas can be located with certainty.
- 27:36Teeman was an Edomite city South of the Dead Sea, considered a
- 27:41center of wisdom at that time. Bildad may have descended from
- 27:46the eastern tribe of Shua, Abraham's youngest son.
- 27:50Some think that Zophar, the Namathite, a word that occurs
- 27:54nowhere else in the Bible, came from Arabia.
- 27:57How close were Job and his friends?
- 27:59Job and his friends may have been exceptionally close, but to
- 28:03sit in Silent Morning for a week was also much more typical of
- 28:08their culture than ours. Job lived in a much slower paced
- 28:13society than ours and hospitality was considered one
- 28:17of the highest virtues. So that is the end of chapter 2.
- 28:22If you found this beneficial, please share this with someone
- 28:24else. Please subscribe if you're not
- 28:27and join us for chapter 3 next time.
- 28:32I try to stay in the Bible, at least a chapter a day to really
- 28:35study it and think about what these these books of the Bible
- 28:42say to us today in addition to knowing what it was back then.
- 28:48So anyway, I hope this was beneficial for you and I hope
- 28:51you come back again. Thank you.
